Boat check-in: examining a yacht down to the last screw

Boat check-in: examining a yacht down to the last screw

  • Boat check-in: examining a yacht down to the last screw

The boat is already waiting in the harbour and you're fishing around in your mind for what to check before setting sail. We've put together a list of the most important things to look for when taking over your boat. Take it step by step. The main thing is to have the charter company show you all the important things and check their condition and function. Let's explore a yacht's equipment together!

3 reasons to inspect the boat thoroughly

  • Enjoy the voyage right from the word go. You’ll set sail reassured that everything works and is in its place. When taking over you will refresh your skills and knowledge.
  • Avoid any unpleasant surprises when returning the boat or paying any unnecessary fines. All faults will be recorded and detected in advance.
  • Sort out any crisis at sea quickly, efficiently and with a clear head. All your energy can be devoted to sorting out the problem and not searching for life jackets, harnesses, pumps or tools.

What gear to check on board?

Check everything thoroughly and always make sure that the piece of equipment is actually on board, in sufficient numbers and in good condition. Check the functionality of all the important equipment yourself. Find all defects or missing items and record them on the checklist . And now to the boat inspection itself!

YACHTING.COM TIP: Share the equipment list with crew members, they will get a basic overview and when you train them on the boat they will have an idea of what you are talking about. Remember to also  tell them the 7 key things to remember before setting sail . And it doesn't hurt to mention  the rules of sailing etiquette .

Dive below deck

Electrical equipment.

  • Switches and circuit breakers (on the main panel on the wall next to the navigation table).
  • Battery and water status indicator (on the main panel).
  • Anchor windlass, its controls and circuit breaker (usually hidden somewhere).
  • Navigation lights, including replacement bulbs.
  • Navigation devices and autopilot, echosounder.

What to focus on:  View the main panel, which will show you how the switches and circuit breakers are functioning. Turn on the radio, the lights, check the battery recharging and GPS. Try pulling anchor to check the condition of the windlass.

TIP YACHTING.COM: The battery drains quickly, especially draining are the refrigerator and anchor windlass. If you are sailing without a motor, which recharges the battery, or intend on harbouring at places without a connection to the grid, it is best to warn the crew of the limited resources. Show the crew the beauty of wild matted hair! Hairdryers and straighteners should be left at home.

Navigation aids and documents (on the navigation table in the saloon)

  • Paper maps, their condition and if they cover the entire route.
  • Navigation aids (dividers, pencil, rulers, compass).
  • Binoculars (although the ability to  Estimate Distance at Sea by Eye will also come in handy)
  • Yachting documents (voyage permits - in Croatia the so-called Prijava, liability insurance, the concession permit required in Croatia, crew list).

Navigation map

Engine and fuel

  • Engine and transmission oil.
  • V-belt tension, fuel filter.
  • Coolant level and check the coolant water inlet valve.
  • Check the fuel level in the tank, the fuel tank is usually located under the double bed in the cabin.

What to focus on:  Perform a visual inspection of the engine. Can you see anything leaking?  You should ask to be shown access to the engine. Start the motor, shift into forward and reverse to determine the condition of the propeller.

Safety equipment.

  • Life jackets.
  • Life belts (harnesses).
  • Fire extinguishers.

What to focus on:  Inspect everything thoroughly   and always make sure that each piece of equipment is actually on board, in sufficient numbers and in good condition.

Life buoy

Water, toilet and bathroom

  • Water tanks (usually two and under the double bed in the cabin).
  • WC (valves), holding tank switching and draining.
  • Draining water properly from the shower.
  • Shower at the stern.

What to focus on:  Check the water status in the tanks (the status indicator is not reliable). Check where their switch is. Typically, only one tank is connected at a time and when the water runs out you need to switch over to the other full tank.

YACHTING.COM TIP: A clogged toilet has already made vacation unpleasant for many a seasoned sailor and you've probably heard some funny stories yourself. Be sure to  explain the workings of the toilet  to the crew as soon as possible. After all, a clogged faecal tank is a very common reason for forfeiture of the bail. If you plan to avoid marinas, also warn the crew about the limited capacity of the water tanks.
  • Refrigerator (in summer the refrigerator is the second most important thing on the boat, after the engine).
  • Stove (leans to keep pots as level as possible).
  • 2 gas cylinders (check how full they are and the reserve).
  • Bedding (included).
  • Storage space.

And on deck

Sails and controls.

Try packing and rolling up the sails, rope tension

  • Stoppers, winches, condition of the ropes.
  • Rudder (test the play of the steering wheel to the left and right).
  • Sails (condition, damage, controls).

Tensioning the rope of the main sail

  • Boat’s deck and the space under the floors (scratches, presence of water, condition around the screws).
  • Sides of the hull (can be damaged or scraped if fenders haven’t been used enough).
  • Bow (damage might be primarily caused by the anchor).
  • Stern (damage from the harbour mooring when manoeuvring).
  • Below the waterline (check preferable outside the marina - scrapes, wrapped rope around prop).

Anchor

What’s in the lockers (storage areas, especially under the benches on deck and in the saloon)?

  • Emergency tiller (here it is a good idea to put it on and use it).
  • Mooring ropes.
  • Reserve anchor.
  • Bucket and scrubbing brush.
  • Lever for manual bilge pump.
  • Paddles, pump for the dinghy (check to make sure it fits in) and paddle hooks for the dinghy.
  • Power extension cable, etc.
  • Cable cutter.
  • Rescue buoy with light.
TIP YACHTING.COM: There is usually enough free space in the batiste - for example, for storing water bottles, beer, snorkeling gear. If you want to know what to bring on the boat, our article  What not to forget to bring on the boat  will help you.

What is often overlooked when checking the boat?

  • Bosun’s chair  for climbing the mast.
  • Spare parts (spare belts for the main engine and rubber impeller for the salt water feed pump for engine cooling).
  • Small dinghy  and its condition .
TIP YACHTING.COM:   Download a sample   inventory list in several languages.

So are you in the mood yet? In our search engine you’ll find the latest offers. Each boat is described in detail, so you can see your dream equipment before booking.

How to Buy or Sell Used Boat Gear & Equipment

Boaters tend to collect a lot of old gear over the years… lots and lots of gear! What may no longer be useful to you may be invaluable to another boater in need of specific gear or parts.

Almost every boater you talk to has something lying around they don’t use anymore. When you look into how to sell the items, the options are not very good. There are many places to sell used boats (the typical used market for boating), but until recently nothing really specific for equipment.

Some people use eBay – a well known and successful platform for selling stuff… but it doesn’t work as well for people looking for boat equipment. For example, when you try searching by keywords for boating equipment you get all kinds of unrelated stuff.  The problem is boating equipment is not a primary category – so if you search for “anchor” you may get nautical anchor charm bracelets, search for “rigging” and you’ll get stuff for trucks, sound stages, etc.

Buying and Selling for Boat Equipment

UsedBoatEquipment.com is a website for selling used equipment like a Craig’s list or eBay if you like, but specifically built for the boating market.

They built a category structure like you would find on an online retail boat store. This makes it easy to find stuff and not worry about figuring out the right keywords.

By encouraging boaters with equipment lying around in basements, garages and boatyards to list them on the site, UsedBoatEquipment.com makes it possible for someone who needs it to buy it.

Masts are one of our their biggest selling items. This represents the power of what they do… lots of riggers have old masts lying around and there is a market for them. By listing them with on UsedBoatEquipment.com, someone with a broken mast can find a replacement and get sailing again.

Users of the site include recreational boaters and industry partners. In addition to private listings, there are many retailers that use the site to list clearance items, producing some great deals for boaters.

Here are some success stories…

One site member recounted that he put his old Autohelm autopilot from the mid 1980’s on the site. He ended up selling parts to two separate people extending the life of their Autohelm units. This made him some money and he helped a couple of fellow boaters which made him happy. “I used the site for the first time to sell a brand new boarding ladder that I had never installed. I got hits on the item almost immediately and ended up selling it to a boater in Arizona!!” “I have used this site to get some great deals on parts – very happy with what I have found saved me a lot of money” “Great experience with this web site! After listing my 16′ pocket boom, I had 3 people interested in the first few days!”

The basic fee for a listing is only $4 for 60 days, or free if the value of your item is under $100. You can also sign up for a membership package if you have a lot of items to sell. There is no commission due for a sale of an item, and there is no charge to the buyer to use the site.

How it Works

For a full tutorial on how the site works, check out this video by site owner Mike Hobson:

You could also donate parts of your boat. For example, like if you have a boat that is virtually in pieces, but the engine still works great you could always donate the engine to a place like Charity Boats. They accept boat donations of all sorts, even parts. They only ask that you submit the online donation form on their web site. When you make a donation you not only receive a tax deduction, but you also help Charity Boats continue to be able to help people. If you have any questions you can give them a call, contact them through live chat, or by submitting a contact form.

I didn’t realize that mast are the thing most bought for a boat. It does seem like a good thing to be aware of when you are considering buying a sail boat. If I was getting a boat I would wan to know what the potential things that need to be replaced are.

If you enjoy bargain hunting, you’ll love picking over parts at a boat salvage yard. A marine salvage yard is a place where wrecked and salvage boats go to be taken apart and recycled. Often these companies also specialize in boat removal and offer boat disposal services.

Photo of boat salvage yards with outboard motors and shelves of boating equipment

How it works

Boat junk yards buy boats that are damaged beyond repair (or no longer wanted) from boat owners and insurance companies for rock-bottom prices. Sometimes these boat scrap yards will specialize in a certain type of boat (e.g. yachts or power).

The boat junkyard then dismantles and sells the boat salvage parts to customers.

At “pick and pull” yards” you’re set loose in the yard with a screwdriver, free to climb all over the boats and pull off the pieces that strike your fancy. The deals can be outstanding.

For example, I once spent a pleasant afternoon stripping 30 lbs of Harken blocks and cleats off a grounded race boat and paid only 25 dollars for my bag of booty. That hardware could have easily cost me 10-20x at a chandlery.

Very often the boat junk yard staff can help you find the right part. If you’re looking for a specific part, call ahead to inquire about availability.

What you’ll find

If it’s attached to a boat, you’ll likely find it at a salvage yard! Engines, water pumps, winches, blocks, doors, hatches, booms, masts, etc.

Sometimes you’ll find items like used sails , lines, and electronics but many owners will strip out items that can be resold before delivering the boat to the salvage yard.

boat being lifted by a crane on railway tracks

  • Boat salvage yards are the place to go for the best price. Their cheap parts can make your boat repairs and projects a lot more affordable. Plus, there’s no shipping cost.
  • You can physically inspect the part before buying it
  • Boat junk yard staff will know the history of the boat and how this will affect the quality of the parts. For example, boat parts from freshwater boats tend to be in better shape than parts from saltwater boats. How the boat was damaged may also affect your decision to buy a part. For example, you might not want to buy rigging hardware from a boat that lost its mast. However, buying a boom from a boat with fire damage might be fine.
  • You get to be on the boat recycling front lines and pull everything apart yourself! It’s great weekend entertainment.
  • You often have to remove the boat parts you want from the boat (bring tools)
  • Parts are still attached to the boat and therefore not organized like they are in a chandlery. This makes it difficult to find and compare parts
  • Unlike new parts, used marine parts may be less durable, faulty, and there is no warranty
  • Boat salvage yards often have very few staff so don’t expect to get advice on your boat project

Boat shopping tip! If you’re looking for a good deal on a whole boat (not just parts), be sure to check out how to find cheap boats on Craigslist.

Good things come to those who rummage! If you’re lucky enough to have a marine consignment store in your area (see map below) you can save money on boat parts.

Minney’s Yacht Surplus is a MUST-visit for any sailor traveling through Southern California

Marine consignment stores buy or consign boat parts from boat owners and liquidation facilities and then resell them with a small markup. Sometimes stores will let you trade in your old boat parts.

For example, we once walked into a boat consignment store with three old sails we didn’t want and came out with a captain’s chair, a spinnaker pole , and $100 in cash. It’s a great way to turn your boat clutter into useful gear.

Anything you’d expect to find in a chandlery including great deals on electronics, sails, rigging, and hardware.

  • Marine consignment stores have affordable prices and no shipping cost.
  • Staff only accept consignment items of a certain quality so you won’t have to wade through junk for hours
  • Items are organized throughout the store making them easier to browse
  • You have the opportunity to trade in your old boat parts
  • You can physically inspect the parts before purchase
  • Knowledgeable staff offer fast service and can advise you on boat parts and your projects
  • Though inexpensive, parts cost more than they would at a salvage yard
  • Occasionally consigned items have prices that are set too high by the owner of the item
  • There are no warranties or returns

Online stores for used boat parts

While most of the marine consignment stores above, also sell items online, there are a few organizations that specialize in online only.

a screenshot of craigslist search results showing used boat parts for sale

Search online to find a wide selection of parts and have them shipped right to your door.

Be sure to read the fine print and understand who the seller is. Sometimes it’s a company selling parts, in which case the parts have usually been inspected and tested. In other cases, the parts are being sold by an individual, in which case there are really no quality standards.

You can buy anything online that you’d find at a chandlery but keep in mind it will be a lot more expensive to ship heavy parts like anchors, chain, or propellers.

  • Buying online is cheaper than buying at a chandlery
  • Accessible and convenient
  • Easy to browse and compare parts in well-organized categories
  • Sometimes parts are inspected and tested before the sale
  • It’s possible to find highly specialized and discontinued boat parts
  • More expensive than marine consignment stores and boat salvage yards and there’ll be shipping costs.
  • There’s no way to personally inspect parts before the purchase
  • No in-person staff to provide advice, though often staff are available by email or phone

Buy second-hand boat parts online from these websites:

In the last couple of years, many of the online boat part vendors have shut down their websites.

Shipwreck Salvage seems to be one of the few sites left standing. The company is run by a semi-retired mechanic and sells freshwater parts worldwide.

If you know of anyone who is selling boat parts online and has a large inventory, let us know in the comments and we’ll add them to our list.

Of course, you can always find boat parts in your local area (and beyond) by searching buy and sell sites like eBay, Kijiji, and Craigslist.

Salvage boats for sale at auction

There is one last place you can buy cheap boat parts – at auction! If you’re planning a big project (like outfitting a boat to sail around the world or restoring a classic boat) you may want to find a salvage boat for sale, buy it, and part it out yourself.

wooden auctioneers gavel

Look for police and other auctions in your area or search an online auction site like AutoBidMaster, YachtSalvage.com, Copart , and SCA.

Find out when an auction is taking place in your area or use one of the online auction sites listed above. Place your bid and watch carefully as the bidding closes.

From storm-damaged sailboats to outboard motors to police-seized sport boats, you can find anything at auction, often at a more than reasonable price.

  • Buying a whole boat and parting it out will be very cost-effective because you’re buying in bulk
  • In the case of a live auction, you may be able to physically view the boat
  • You can sell any parts of the boat that you don’t need and recoup some of the purchase price
  • Buying at auction can be exciting!
  • It’s hard to know the quality of individual parts as you won’t be able to inspect them in detail
  • You’ll need somewhere to store the boat while you’re parting it out
  • Parting out a boat is time-consuming
  • Once you’ve finished parting out the boat there will be disposal costs

Tips for buying used boat parts

  • Be precise . Before purchasing, make sure it’s the right part and compatible with your specific boat’s make and model. Before calling a parts department, see if you can find a serial number for the part you’re replacing. Also, take careful measurements of all the key dimensions and check them against the listing.
  • Inspect thoroughly . When buying used boat parts, it’s essential to inspect them thoroughly. Request detailed photos from different angles and ask the seller about the condition, history, and any known issues with the part. If possible, arrange to see the part in person before finalizing the purchase.
  • Buy from reputable sources . Your best bet is to purchase used boat parts from reputable sources such as established marine salvage yards or dealers. Professional sellers are more likely to accurately describe the condition of the part as well as provide great service and fast shipping.
  • Check for warranty or return policy. Ask about any warranties or return policies offered by the seller. A limited warranty or return option can provide you with some peace of mind in case the part turns out to be faulty or incompatible with your boat.
  • Ask about service history . Inquire about the service history, especially if it’s a complex part or system like an outboard motor or stern drive unit. Knowing how the part was maintained, and if it received proper care, can give you insight into its overall condition and potential longevity.

Remember, while buying used parts can save you money, it’s important to balance cost savings with the quality and condition of the parts. Take your time to make an informed decision.

Happy used boat part shopping!

What makes outdoor furniture marine-grade?

Our collections shown here feature material components that are resistant to moisture, rust, salt damage, as well as wind and cold, conditions common in marine environments such as boats, marinas, and beachfront properties.

What materials are best suited for boat or yacht furniture?

Synthetic waterproof materials like yacht-grade fiberglass bring a modern look and uncompromising durability to marine furniture. Popular synthetic options include 316 marine grade stainless steel, which provides enhanced protection against corrosion caused by salt water, and Textilene mesh sling, both of which are used in  Barlow Tyrie's critically lauded Equinox  line.

While modern material science has produced an array of weather-resistant technologies, nature still holds an important place on the water. Not long ago, teak was the material of choice among shipbuilders. Although few teak vessels sail the ocean these days, plenty of the finest yacht furniture still incorporates teak. This durable tropical hardwood develops a lustrous silver-grey patina over time and possesses excellent durability against dry rot, which is why teak furniture can last a lifetime with minimal maintenance. Teak boat tables, like  Arbor by Gloster , add natural beauty to the interior or deck of any boat.

What are the best seating options for my boat?

The captain's chair may be the most important seat on board, but all hands on deck deserve a spectacular seat to soak in the ocean views. While we do not offer custom-made boat seating, we do have a number of stand-alone seating choices fit for the finest superyacht.

If you are looking for vintage charm and unbeatable relaxation,  Barlow Tyrie's Commodore Steamer  takes inspiration from the teak deck chairs popularized with turn-of-the-century Transatlantic cruise liners like the infamous  Titanic . With an adjustable backrest and removable footrest, the Commodore exemplifies old-world leisure that feels right at home on today's boat decks.

For a more lightweight selection that still possesses a classic look, we recommend folding boat deck chairs like those in the  Safari  and Beacher collections. Combining canvas and teak, these portable seats are easy to adjust on deck and can be brought ashore to lounge on the beach.

Those in search of a more modern look will appreciate the powder-coated aluminum and sling loungers in Mamagreen's Stripe and Allux collections. Boat sofas, made with water-resistant fabric and marine-grade frames, offer group seating to share special moments out at sea. Many of our modular  deep seating  collections provide robust protection against the elements and would fit right in on larger boats. Contact our  customer service team  to see if an item in our collection is suitable for your boat or yacht.

What is the best carpet for yachts and boats?

Once you have your sea legs, you'll want a beautiful surface to stand on. We offer a stellar selection of  carpet for boats and yachts  curated with performance and beauty in mind. Deck rugs should feature tight, slip-resistant weaves made from synthetic materials like woven vinyl or polypropylene that are UV-stabilized and easy to clean. In the most prestigious of superyachts, a fine wool yacht carpet complements the refined craftsmanship that defines staterooms and interior suites.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four U.S. Army boats, loaded with tons of equipment and steel pier segments, left Virginia on Tuesday, heading to Gaza as part of the U.S. effort to expand the delivery of food and other supplies to starving Palestinians as Israel’s war against Hamas drags on.

The ships pulled out of docks at Joint Base Langley-Eustis and headed down the James River toward the Atlantic Ocean for what could be a month-long voyage to the Mediterranean Sea. There, at a yet-to-be-announced location along the Gaza shore, they will build and begin to operate a floating dock to receive the aid.

Since Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, Israel’s military has battered the territory, killing more than 30,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and creating a humanitarian catastrophe . The U.N. says virtually all of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are struggling to find food. But getting humanitarian aid to the area has been difficult, due to the ongoing hostilities and struggles to coordinate with the Israeli military, which has blocked routes and slowed deliveries due to inspections.

The latest Pentagon plan calls for the U.S. military to build what is called a modular causeway system. Off shore, the Army will build a large floating platform where ships can unload large containers of aid. Then the aid will be transferred by the Army to a motorized string of steel causeway sections that have been pushed to the shore.

That pier is expected to be as much as 1,800 feet (550 meters) long, with two lanes, and the Pentagon has said it could accommodate the delivery of more than 2 million meals a day for Gaza residents. Officials have not said who will be unloading the containers and taking the aid ashore. President Joe Biden has said there will be no U.S. troops on the ground in Gaza.

On Tuesday, as family members and senior Army commanders watched, about 70 soldiers with the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) pulled away from the docks in four U.S. Army vessels: the USAV Wilson Wharf, USAV Matamoros and USAV Monterrey, all Army landing crafts, and the larger USAV SP4 James A. Loux, a logistics support watercraft.

The brigade’s commander, Army Col. Sam Miller, said about 500 of his soldiers will participate in the mission. All together, Pentagon officials have said about 1,000 U.S. troops will be involved.

Calling it a complicated mission, Miller said the transit will take about a month, but it will depend on weather and any possible high seas. The actual construction, he said, will take about a week, but that also could be hampered by weather. Then it will take additional time to get the delivery process coordinated with those providing the aid and the system up and running. Defense officials have said it will take about two months to get the deliveries started.

The Army’s vessels and maritime capabilities are unique and not as well known as the Navy’s. The last time the 7th Transportation Brigade did a similar mission to construct a large pier was in Haiti in 2010. But it has participated in a number of major military exercises.

“The soldiers here are energized, they’re motivated, they’re excited,” Miller said, adding that the new humanitarian mission “gives them purpose and meaning” and highlights the Army’s watercraft. He noted that just 36 hours after Biden ordered the operation, the first Army vessel — the USAV General Frank S. Besson logistics ship — left Joint Base Langley-Eustis on Saturday.

Miller said a larger Maritime Sealift Command ship will also be leaving Virginia in the coming days, and will be carrying some of the bigger equipment and more of the steel pier segments.

National origin:- Soviet Union Role:- Fighter Interceptor Manufacturer:- Mikoyan-Gurevich Designer:- First flight:- 29th October 1940 Introduction:- 1941 Status:- Retired 1945 Produced:- 1940-1941 Number built:- 3,422 Primary users:- Soviet Air Forces (VVS); Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO); Soviet Naval Aviation Developed from:- Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1 Variants:- Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211 Operational history MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
