Club Náutico Santa Ponsa

Santa Ponsa Yacht Club

yacht club spain

Santa Ponsa Yacht Club is a sports club with a relaxing and family atmosphere, endeavouring to provide quality at all times, integrating into the surrounding environment and only 25 km from Palma Airport.

The port was built in 1975 utilizing the natural cove called “La Caleta”, whose history, as a natural port used for trading with the local town, dates back more than two thousand years, of which today only archaeological ruins of ‘Puig de Sa Morisca’ remain. On the 11th of September, 1229, King James I, the Conqueror, chose this site to disembark his troops and so began the conquest of Mallorca. To commemorate this event a cross was placed at the entrance of the port, which can be seen from all over the bay.

As one enters the port, leaving to starboard the fuel station, you will find a sheltered inlet, surrounded by gardens, which accommodates 522 boats ranging from 7 to 20m in length. The port has been designed to blend in with its natural surroundings, with only the necessary number of buildings to provide all the facilities and maximum security of a modern port that has been granted the “gold” distinctive referring to the technical security of the installations, environmental, sanitary and hygiene requisites and the quality of its services by Lloyd´s Register, the ISO 14001 certificate by Bureau Veritas and the “Q” of Quality by the Ministry of Tourism of the Govern of the Balearic Islands.

Constitution, Statutes and Governance

The Nautical Club Santa Ponsa was founded on April 14th 1971. On November 18th of the same year, the Statutes were approved, being registered in the National Register of Associations, under the name of Club Nautico Santa Ponsa Palma de Mallorca, section 3, number 8,678.

The Statutes of the club, as originally approved, were amended on several occasions in order to adapt to changing circumstances and to conform with legislation in force at the time.

The Governance of the Club, according to the approved Statutes, is entrusted to the General Assembly of members and the Board of Directors. The members, who established this constitution on the 18th November 1971, together formed the Managing Board of the Club under the chairmanship of D. Miguel Nigorra Oliver.

Preparatory works for the marina began in early 1970. The civil engineer, D. Jerónimo Sainz Gomila was responsible for drawing up the project. In February 1971 application was made in the name of IMISA to the Ministry of Public Works for planning permission for the Santa Ponsa Yacht Club project. Subsequent to this application and having founded the ‘Club Náutico Santa Ponsa’, further applications were made to ‘Costas y Puertos de Baleares’ and to the Ministry of Public Works, requesting the transfer of the concession of the yacht club, originally requested in the name of IMISA, to the name of the Club Náutico Santa Ponsa.

On 10th of January, 1975, a Ministerial Order was issued authorizing the construction and operation of the Santa Ponsa Yacht Club, with a number of conditions, including, we would point out, the concession for a period of 50 years and a stipulation that 20% of the moorings must be reserved for general public or transient use.

The construction of the project was awarded to the company ‘Cubiertas y Tejados S.A , these ending on the 10th of October, 1979 and being approved by the Head Office of ‘Costas y Puertos de Baleares’.

In 1997, following the transfer of powers from central Government to the Autonomous Communities, the Club is required to adapt the statutes to a unified model for all sailing clubs originally registered with the Spanish Sailing Federation, under the Decree of the CAIB 147/1997 of the 21st of November. In this way the constitution and operation of private sports clubs is regulated in the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands.

In view of the regulations to which the ‘Sports Associations’ are now subject in Decree 147/97, the possibility is considered to give up the special status of ‘Sports Association’ and to carry out the statutory modifications and necessary administrative procedures in order to register the club in the legal framework of associations of a more general character. As a result, in the Extraordinary General Meeting, held on the 25th September, 2000, it was agreed to amend the Statutes and register the club in the Registry of Associations of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands. On the 18th of July 2002, the club was registered as the “CLUB NAUTICO SANTA PONSA”, under nº 4600 in the first section.

For the Club Náutico Santa Ponsa, the main advantage of this was to conserve the number of its members and each member to be the titleholder of a right of a berth. In this way the interests of the Club and its members always coincide.

History of “Sa Caleta of Santa Ponsa”

The history of the cove ‘La Caleta’, where our port is to be found, has always been linked to that of the hill known as ‘Puig de Sa Morisca’ at an altitude of 92 metres above sea level and situated half a mile southeast of the cove and which today is a protected area considered to be of archaeological interest. This hill and it’s surrounding area was populated in the pre-roman era and it’s inhabitants traded with the ships that came to Santa Ponsa and which were able to anchor in ‘La Caleta’, where numerous roman amphoras have been found, studied and recently classified by Mallorcan researchers.

These inhabitants had another place of contact with the navigators which was, ‘Turò de ses Abelles’, situated at the same distance from ‘Puig de Sa Morisca’, but to the east. This ‘Turò’, or small hill, is to be found today on the left of the 13th green of Golf I, Santa Ponsa, where important archaeological excavations revealed a location dedicated to trade. The inhabitants who traded here returned at night to the safety of the ‘Puig de Sa Morisca’, where they lived for reasons of security, so the ‘Turò’ could be described as a ‘shopping-centre’ which was closed at night. To understand how there could be direct contact with the navigators at this location, one must realise that the area between, what is today, the golf course and the shore line was in those days invaded by the sea and so it remained until the silt and the formation of dunes prevented it’s navigation.

One can imagine that the navigators, in order to trade, could opt for either anchoring in ‘La Caleta’ or by the ‘Turo de Ses Abelles’ and this decision depended largely upon the trust formed between them and the local inhabitants from previous encounters, since ‘La Caleta’ with it’s narrow entrance supposed a greater risk should any incident arise with the local population. Naturally, by the Roman era, security was absolute for both parties.

One of the most important events in the history of Mallorca took place much later in the sheltered waters of ‘La Caleta’, when, on the 11th of September 1229, King James I of Aragón disembarked there in order to put an end to the Muslim occupation of Mallorca which had lasted for the previous three centuries. This disembarkation was commemorated 700 years later, in 1929, by placing the stone cross that today stands at the entrance of the port. The King’s fleet had anchored two days earlier by the islet ‘Pantaleu’, near the island of ‘Dragonera’, but ‘La Caleta’ was chosen to disembark the King with the bulk of his army, not only for it’s sheltered waters but also for the protection provided by the height of the ‘Puig de Sa Morisca’ which, before the disembarkation, had previously been occupied by an advance command of the Christian Army in whose operation the first armed encounter between the Christians and the Muslims took place.

The most important historical references on the Conquest of Mallorca are to be found in the ‘Llibre dels fets’ written in the first person by King Jaime I and in ‘Kitab Tarih Mayurqa’,written by Ibn Amir al Mahzumi at the time of the events, a text that was discovered in Algeria in 2001 and recently published in 2009 by the Mallorcan historian Guillem Rosselló Bordoy.

Wanderlust Wednesday: My SeaDream Yacht Club Experience In Spain

by Alicia | Collaboration , Destinations , Travel , Wanderlust Wednesday

Alicia Wood, Dallas Lifestyle Blogger, Dallas Travel Blogger, Dallas Fashion Blogger, SeaDream Yacht Club, Front Door Fashion

We returned a week ago from our amazing trip with the SeaDream Yacht Club in Spain. This was truly a dream trip and a fabulous way to see so many wonderful destinations.  You can see video of our entire time on the yacht on Instagram Stories Highlights under SeaDream I.  I’ve shared my packing list as well as what I wore so now it’s time for all the details of our time on SeaDream I in this Wanderlust Wednesday post.

About SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream Yacht Club operates two identical, luxury mega yachts, SeaDream I and SeaDream II,  that spend half the year in the Mediterranean and the other half in the Caribbean. These beautiful yachts have a maximum of 112 passengers and have 99 crew. Our sailing had more crew than passengers! SeaDream is known for their incredible, personalized service, exclusive access to special destinations and amazing food.  It is their mission to provide a casual yachting experience and exceed expectations.

yacht club spain

We sailed on the SeaDream I, a 344 ft luxury yacht designed for a luxury yachting experience. Their motto is “It’s Yachting, Not Cruising.” On our sailing we had 97 guests to 99 crew. The SeaDream I is a classic yacht with beautiful public spaces and luxurious staterooms. Deck 3 is home to the swimming pool and a sundeck, Main Lobby with concierge, SeaDream Boutique, and the Main Salon where we gathered in the evenings to hear about the next day’s destination and enjoy live music and cocktails. Deck 4, where our state room was located, is also home to the Spa, Gym, Piano Bar, Casino and beautiful Library with computers for passenger use.   Deck 5 was the main deck for outdoor dining with stairs leading to Deck 6 and the Top of the Yacht Bar as well as the Balinese Dream Beds, which are a SeaDream signature. This was my favorite spot on the yacht and where I spent a lot of time each afternoon after exploring our current port. These beds are also available to reserve for stargazing or sleeping under the stars.   There is also an elegant Dining Room on Deck 2. We only ate here a few times as the weather was so nice it was great to be outside and enjoy the beautiful sunsets each evening.

The Staterooms

There are a few larger suites about 55 Deluxe Staterooms total on each SeaDream Yacht. Our Stateroom had a living area with custom sofa in Robert Allen fabrics.  Across from this was a built-in desk and entertainment area. Our luxurious queen size bed was through an archway and could be closed off by black out curtains. The bed was amazingly comfortable; made up with high quality bedding and lots of down pillows.   It’s one of the only beds that I have slept in and not been very ready to get back to my own bed stat!    When we boarded the yacht, our Steward, Charissa, was there to meet us and answer any questions. Once we had unpacked, she took our bags to storage.   Almost every night, she had a special surprise waiting for us. The first night was champagne and strawberries, the second,   it was monogrammed pajamas, the next a SeaDream silk sleep mask, and another night lavender sachets on our pillows. One night, Scott asked her if he could have some dark chocolate and she made sure it was in our room each night for the rest of our trip. That is fantastic service and attention to detail!

Chef Alastair and his staff are truly masters in the kitchen. The variety of offerings was truly outstanding. From haute cuisine to raw and everything in between.  Nothing was too much to ask.  If you liked to something one night and wanted it again, Not a problem! Feeling like a fresh green juice with your latte in the morning? Not a problem! Spent a little extra time in town and missed lunch? Not a problem! Simply ask Mikee, Frank, Doramus or Juan and they’ll happily bring you a menu. Francisco and Vladan were always ready at the Top of the Yacht Bar to serve fresh Sangria or mix a Margarita to your specifications. You know I’m picky about my Margaritas and they got it perfect each time.  One evening we were having dinner on the late side so Scott ordered a cheese platter and wine to be delivered to the room. Truly, any request is happily granted.

Something to note about all of these dining options and special requests is that everything is included. Special juices   in the morning, cocktails in the afternoon, room service menu and wine and cocktails with dinner.   Each evening, the sommelier had chosen several wines for the evening that paired with the menu and typically showcased a European or regional Spanish wine. Each one was wonderful.   They do have a very large wine cellar with additional wines for purchase, if you’re so inclined.

Breakfast and lunch were available several hours each on Deck 5 and 6 with Deck 6 being my favorite spot any time of day. There is a little secret deck off the back of 5 that accommodates about six tables. Be sure to ask for a table there at least one night!

Onboard activities

There are many activities on the yacht as well.  Each SeaDream yacht features a Thai-certified spa with massage, facials, nail and hair services; golf simulator, pool, several sundecks, a casino, a piano bar, the Top of the Yacht Bar, and water activities including jet skis, waterskiing, wakeboards, Hobie cats, paddle boards, water banana and a water trampoline.

Our Itinerary and Excursions

Our sailing was along Spain’s Costa Del Sol.   We began in Malaga and made stops in, Puerto Banus, Gibraltar, Cartagena, Motril/Granada, Denia, Ibiza and Barcelona.

yacht club spain

We flew from DFW to Madrid and then took the high-speed train on to Malaga. After checking into the Hotel Gran Miramar, We spent the afternoon wondering this darling town. We had lunch at Cafe de L’Abuela near the Picasso Museum and toured the Malaga Cathedral and Roman theater.   We had dinner at the Chill Out Bar at the top of the Gran Miramar overlooking the beach and actually met two couples boarding the SeaDream I the next morning there!

After breakfast in their blue and white pool-side restaurant, we visited the Picasso Museum.  Picasso was born and raised in Malaga and his family has created this museum with many never before seen works.  Pro Tip:  Buy your tickets online even a few minutes before you want to go and walk past the very long line!

Boarding SeaDeam I

The photo above might be one of my favorite from the trip. Do you notice the fun crew in the lower left corner? Everyone was warm and friendly from the very beginning!

After watching our departure from Malaga into the deep blue Mediterranean Sea, we got settled in our room.  Before dinner we met for cocktails in the grand salon to hear about the next day’s destination.  Then we went to the Top of the Yacht Bar to watch the sunset, my favorite daily activity!

yacht club spain

Puerto Banus

SeaDream is the only commercial sailing yacht allowed access to this private, luxury marina to the west of Marbella founded by Jose Banus in the early 70s.   We arrived early this first evening after leaving Malaga and after dinner went into town to see the amazing private yachts lit up and check out the nightlife.

The next morning, we slept in a bit and then went back into town to do some shopping and more luxury yacht viewing. Every luxury brand you could think of was in this tiny, glittery port.

We went back to the SeaDream Yacht for lunch and then I read on the top deck as Scott jet skied.   Anytime the yacht is moored outside of a port, all of the water activities are available.  They coordinate times for those that want to swim as well.

That night we enjoyed dinner at the Captains table with new friends from Canada as the yacht pulled out of port.

yacht club spain

The next morning we woke up in the UK territory of Gibraltar. The photo above shows you a great perspective of the SeaDream yachts in comparison to a large cruise ship with about 3500 passengers.   We spent the morning touring the Rock of Gibraltar and the Great Siege Tunnels.   This was one of the two excursions that we did during our trip. We went with about 10 others on this tour.  We rode the cable car to the top of Gibraltar where we heard the history and importance of this small territory (only 6 square miles) and saw the famous Rock of Gibraltar as well as the monkeys. It was foggy but still had beautiful views of Spain, Africa and Gibraltar.  After returning to the yacht for lunch, Scott and another guy took two of the mountain bikes that are provided by SeaDream back up the trail to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar.

yacht club spain

Motril/Granada

The second excursion we did was here in Granada. With about 15 others we boarded a luxury bus for the 45 minute drive to ancient Moorish city of Granada in the Sierra Nevada mountains. We had lunch at Restaurante Ruta Del Veleta, which is King Juan Carlos‘ favorite restaurant in the area. Our guide then took us to the incredible palaces of La Alhambra. She was a native of Granada whose father is also a guide at La Alhambra so she really knew the history and details. After doing so much traveling this summer and arranging it all myself, I cannot tell you how fabulous it was for someone else to find the best guide, restaurant and itinerary. All we had to do is board the bus!  I heard the same comments from others who did the excursions in the other ports as well.

yacht club spain

This beautiful, quaint city has been a major naval port for centuries. The SeaDream docks in the center of town making it easy to stroll the marble paved streets and experience it’s diverse cultural heritage. We visited the Mill Hill for a stunning view over the city as well as the Teatro Romano, the Roman theater, for a look inside the history of this town. There are several archaeological sites to visit here as well. We chose a cute restaurant on a side street called Nuestra Tradition for sangria and tapas for lunch.   I was clearly on a quest for the best Sangria in Spain.   We spent the afternoon relaxing and reading at the top of the yacht and my favorite spot, the Balinese dream beds.  Then enjoyed the Chef’s Tasting menu in my favorite dining spot for watching the sunset.

yacht club spain

After leisurely breakfast on the yacht, we walked the tree-lined streets of Denia. Larger than the other ports we had visited, this town is also rich in Greek, Roman and Islamic history. We hiked to the highest point to the iconic castle overlooking the city.

We returned to the yacht for our Thai massage appointments in the Spa.   I had a 90-minute back massage with custom facial. Scott opted for the 90 minute Thai massage. On both SeaDream yachts the Spa is staffed with certified Thai massage therapists.

Everyone on the yacht was so friendly and we met so many interesting people. This night we invited new friends from Germany to join us and the couple from Canada we met the first night for dinner at one of the tables at the Top of the Yacht Bar deck.

yacht club spain

It was fun to see this iconic port in person. It is as beautiful as you would imagine. Scott and the same adventurous friend from the Gibraltar bike/hike took the mountain bikes once again but this time were led by a professional triathlete and a professional mountain biker. They biked down the coast line and up to the fort at the top of Ibiza. When he returned, we walked the famous boardwalk and admired again so many incredible private yachts.  We found the most darling restaurant called Ristorante Jardin La Brasa where we enjoyed wonderful paella, tapas and more sangria!  I then returned to my favorite spot on the yacht to finish my friend’s book and start a new one . This night we were invited by the mountain biking buddy to celebrate his birthday with other friends on the lower after dining deck.  The best place for dinner in my opinion!

The next morning, we very reluctantly disembarked in Barcelona.  After an amazing week on SeaDream I and being pampered at every turn by the incredible crew it was definitely bittersweet!

Sailing on a SeaDream Yacht is definitely one of the best travel experiences I have ever had. I can certainly understand why more than 90% of their guests return.  One couple we met has spent more than 195 night aboard the SeaDream yachts.  This is like visiting your favorite hotel where the staff knows and cares about you but it is in a different location each time you return.  We cannot wait to return and are looking at a sailing next fall. I also think I’m going to check into taking the girls on a family trip to the Caribbean soon!  I’ll be sharing more about these ideas soon but you can read more here .

Thank you to SeaDream Yacht Club for having us as their guests and to Kelly Gruber of Sherry Lane Travel for arranging all of our travel. Kelly is a travel contributor to The Lush List and a luxury travel agent based in Dallas.  If you have questions about sailing on a SeaDream Yacht, please contact Kelly as she has wonderful gifts to offer anyone who books on SeaDream.  All opinions, Itinerary, and activities selections were my own.

Long Holes Look Intimidating, but It’s the Short Ones That Often Befuddle Golfers

At the British Open at Royal Troon, a short hole called the Postage Stamp has ended many title runs.

Justin Thomas prepare to putt with Tiger Woods and another man standing behind him.

By Paul Sullivan

The British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland this week might help answer a question vexing professional golf. Is the antidote to golfers hitting increasingly long drives creating holes that are even longer? Or is it the opposite: incredible shortness?

Troon, which is hosting its 10th Open this week, is famous for the Postage Stamp , the name given to its par-3 eighth hole, which is 123 yards on the card but may play under 100 yards this week if the tees are moved up and the pin is put in the front of the green. A tiny green surrounded by five bunkers, the hole has been a feature of the course since 1909.

It’s also a hole length that any golfer can hit. But under pressure, with the wind blowing and a tricky pin position, it’s a length that tests the skill of the most elite golfers.

This year, Troon will also have its opposite. It will have the longest hole in Open history , the par-5 sixth hole that will measure 623 yards. It beats by three yards the 15th hole at Royal Liverpool in last year’s Open.

In some ways, lengthening holes for top pros is akin to billionaires competing to have the longest yacht: It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. Pros hit the ball so far that length alone doesn’t deter them.

What does is the strategy inherent in the design of the hole. This is where these two opposites at Troon open up a robust debate among top architects as to which matters more today: extreme length or extreme shortness?

“Short holes just fascinate me,” said Ben Crenshaw , a two-time major champion turned golf course architect with his partner Bill Coore. “Some of the great short holes in the world provide a test of accuracy and bravery in a way that a lot of other holes don’t. The Postage Stamp at Troon has been the scene of a lot of carnage and bravery.”

“The long holes are always a test over there because of the conditions,” Crenshaw added. “You only hope that you don’t reach a long hole that’s into the wind. Then it becomes a very difficult proposition. It’s a test that you will see over there.”

There was a time not so long ago when some par-5s were considered unreachable in two shots. (Hitting a par-5 in two, instead of three, is an advantage for players looking to make up ground on the rest of the field, with a birdie or maybe an eagle.)

In 1991, John Daly captivated the golfing world with how far he hit the ball in winning the P.G.A. Championship as a rookie. Two years later, when the U.S. Open was played at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course, Daly electrified the crowd when he reached the 630-yard 17th in two shots, then the only person to have done that in a tournament.

Some clubs have gone to extreme lengths to protect their holes. The 12th hole at Oakmont Country Club is one. Oakmont, which has hosted nine United States Opens and three P.G.A. Championships, is considered among the toughest golf courses in the United States. And the par-5 12th, always over 600 yards, was considered unreachable in two shots — until it wasn’t. So the last time the club hosted the U.S. Open in 2016, that hole was stretched to 684 yards, making it the longest U.S. Open hole ever.

Not everyone is a fan of that strategy.

“It’s almost impossible now to build a hole that’s unreachable in two, short of making it 700 yards, and I wouldn’t want to do that anyway,” said Tom Doak, who designed the Renaissance Club where the Scottish Open was played last week. “It’s better when the long hitter thinks he can get there, so he will risk getting in trouble to do it.”

Michael Hurdzan, a designer of Erin Hills, the longest course to ever host a U.S. Open at 7,845 yards, said being uncertain or uncomfortable is a better way to challenge elite players.

“If one were silly enough to play the maximum yardage on every hole, Erin Hills would total over 8,500 yards,” he said. “Legend has it that Patrick Reed did that on a practice day and shot 73. Length is not a strong deterrent to scoring among the elite players of today, but making them think is, and that is what a short hole can do.”

The ninth at Erin Hills is just 135 yards with bunkers surrounding it; it made many players at the 2017 U.S. Open unsure.

“The thing about Troon that I love is the capriciousness of the fairways,” Hurdzan said. “That ball can land and scoot one way or the other. They’re trying to hit it hard but now they have to hit it hard and true.”

While holes that are too long can open up a player to shooting many shots over par, they can also have the opposite effect in: removing the temptation to make a heroic shot.

So what needs to be done to keep these championship courses challenging?

Doak had several suggestions. One was a tee-shot hazard so challenging — say a deep, high-walled bunker — that it almost certainly costs players a stroke. Another is to penalize pros with a shot even they don’t like.

“My preference is to have the green bunkered more loosely on a par-5, so the player trying to hit driver off the deck might leave himself a 40-yard bunker shot,” he said. “Even pros hate those. That same bunker shouldn’t bother the guy playing three careful shots.”

A common feature is to put water near the green to claim any errant shots, but Hurdzan criticized that idea as uncreative.

“You want to reduce the margin of error as much as you can at the green, and you can do it with slopes,” he said. “We saw it at Pinehurst for the U.S. Open with all those roll offs. We’re going to see some of that at Troon because those greens have a lot of roll off. You want to design the Saturday and Sunday pin placements with small margins for error.”

Crenshaw, who restored Pinehurst No. 2 in 2011, said those sloping greens were what Donald Ross, the original designer who came from the links of Dornoch in Scotland, intended for championship golf even 100 years ago.

“Those greens defend it so well in so many different ways,” Crenshaw said. “An honest shot has to pull into that green with the proper strength. There are so many [curved] false fronts, if you don’t get the ball up into the green it will roll back on you. You have to play a conservative shot and not go for as many flagsticks. And when you do miss the greens, you’re faced with many delicate shots.”

This is where Crenshaw, a two-time winner of the Masters Tournament, said short befuddled great players more than long.

“Think of the 12th hole at Augusta.,” he said. “That will test you no matter what. It’s the shortest hole on that golf course. And it gets all the attention.”

Of course, at a championship venue like Troon, sometimes both short and long, can be problematic.

In 1982, Bobby Clampett playing in his first Open Championship at age 22 led by five after two rounds. He was off to a solid start with a few more birdies in the third round.

Then at the sixth, the longest hole back then at 577 yards, he carded a triple-bogey 8 that sent him reeling.

In 1997, Tiger Woods, who had turned professional the year before, was in contention at Troon until he took a 6 on the par-3 Postage Stamp hole. “That eighth hole at Troon tests you in all conditions,” Crenshaw said, “because the target is so small.”

And that may make it the better defense to today’s length debate.
