Who owns American Tugs?

American Tugs is owned by Tomco Marine Group which is located today in La Conner, Washington. Tom Nelson was the original brain child of Tomco Marine Group and along with Lynn Senour, a West coast marine architect, sought to create a new company built around high-quality, long-distance cruising vessels. Tom had previously been both President of Nordic Tugs and owner of the Nelson Yacht Corporation which built custom 70 - 90 foot yachts.

Today, Mike Schoppert is the President of Tomco Marine Group and has an extensive background in the boating industry in various aspects. Mike originally began his career in boating at Uniflite Corporation as an expert in fiberglass technology. From there, Mike worked for Chris-Craft, Tolly Craft, Oceanus, and at Nordic Tugs before coming to Tomco. Mike works closely with Tomco Vice President Kurt Dilworth who was also previously at Nordic Tugs. Tom, Mike, and Kurt are a great team that each bring unique backgrounds and ideas on how to elevate American Tugs and the owner experience.

What models does American Tug offer today?

American Tug currently builds five models. The smallest American Tug model is either the 365 or the Waypoint 36, both of which have a LOA of 36' 6". The "middle siblings" include the American Tug 395 and 435, while the largest and flagship model is the 485. 

How many American Tugs are built each year?

Tomco Marine Group produces approximately 6 - 10 boats per year from the Washington-based factory. The team also works hard with existing clients doing major upgrades, re-fits, wood sole upgrades, and other service work.

What makes an American Tug boat special compared to the competition?

American Tugs are semi-custom trawlers designed for extended cruising of coastal waters. The tug-like styling is a carry-over from the original commercial fishing boat hull every American Tug is built on. The forward raked windshield, high freeboard and dramatic sheer are all hints of a heavy-duty workboat, but the Ultra-leather upholstery, Sapele cabinetry, and warm lighting provide an extremely comfortable home for your time on the water. With our semi-displacement hull, we don’t have to wait for the weather to be perfect.  The extra horsepower that comes standard in every boat is designed to allow the captain to tune the boat for the conditions.

What is the American Tug 485 like?

The American Tug 485 was originally designed off of the success of her sister model, the 435. They both are equipped with a hard-chine hull, a popular feature among owners, as well as a full fiberglass hull below the waterline. Above the waterline, the 485 has a foam core that has been vacuum-bagged for extra strength, durability, and insulation.

Powered with a single Cummins QSC8.3 550 HP engine, the American Tug 485 is fuel efficient for long-distance voyages. At a speed of 8 knots, the 485 can cruise 1,440 nautical miles or if there is a need to get to your destination more quickly, she can cruise at 14 knots for a range of 400 nautical miles.

The interior of the American Tug is clasically beautiful with plank-style wood floors and dark granite countertops. Large windows line both port and starboard sides of the salon and the galley is fully equipped with appliances and extra storage to meet all of the demands of the cruising enthusiast.

The pilothouse on the American Tug 485 is just a few steps from the salon and is equipped with a settee and a dedicated helm chair. Electronics can be customized by the owner and is elegantly integated into the cabinetry. Access to both side decks is present through Diamond-Seaglaze doors that also provide great visibility.

There are two staterooms on board the 485, each with their own en suite head. The master cabin is placed amidships and stretches the full beam of the boat. There is a queen-sized, walk-around berth with nightstands on each side as well as additional storage. The guest cabin is placed forward and is equipped with a larger lower bunk and a smaller upper bunk.

American Tugs also offers a 10-year warranty that covers workmanship and blisters. The Tomco factory goes through painstaking quality control efforts and is sea trialed by the team. 

What is the American Tug 435 like?

The American Tug 435 is one of the most popular cruising yacht models offered by the Tomco Marine Group. The 435 is equipped with a hard-chine hull, a popular feature among owners, as well as a full fiberglass hull below the waterline. Above the waterline, the 435 has a foam core that has been vacuum-bagged for extra strength, durability, and insulation.

The interior of the American Tug 435 uses its space intelligently and the result is a 43' 7" boat that feels closer to 50 feet or more. Elegant wood characterizes the 435's interior and extra storage spaces are everywhere. Long-distance cruisers should have no concern when it comes to packing down the 435 with supplies for a multi-day voyage.

What is the American Tug 395 like?

Known as a sturdy cruising boat, the American Tug 395 is perfect for the owner/operator who wants to cruise efficiently and comfortably without the challenges of a much larger vessel. The 395 has a gorgeous, classic trawler-style hull shape built to the same sophisicated levels as all of the Tomco Marine Group models.

Powered with a single Cummins 380 HP diesel engine, the American Tug 395 can cruise in the 15 knot range in shorter trip scenarios. For those travelling longer distances, a fuel efficient 8 knot cruise can give the 395 a range of 1,000 nautical miles. The American Tug 395 consists of a two-stateroom, one head layout with the master suite placed forward. The master features a queen-sized walk-around berth with lots of storage and closet space.The guest stateroom has a larger bunk below and a smaller one above along with additional storage as well. The main head is roomy and has a stall shower.

What is the American Tug 365 like?

Looking at the American Tug 365, the first thought that comes to mind is this looks like a miniature 60-foot trawler-style yacht. This pocket-sized cruiser packs a punch though, both in terms of performance and capabilities. It's easy to see from the dock this boat is made for cruising from the shape and construction of the hull to the large windows that open in the salon for good ventilation.

Designed to run efficiently from the design and choice of engines, the American Tug 365 has some speed to it, but she truly shines in a slower, fuel efficient cruise. The single Cummins 380HP engine can push the 365 to 17 knots at WOT and will burn about 20 gallons per hour. At 9 knots however, the 365 will only burn about 7 gallons per hour. At either speed, one thing owners appreciate is the quiet ride thanks to an abundance of insulation throughout the boat.

At just over 36 feet in length, the interior of the 365 has a surprising amount of room to walk as well as all of the essential appliances, storage, and comfort features needed for cruising. As you walk in front the cockpit, the galley is placed starboard and includes a propane cooktop, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, multiple outlets, four drawers and four storage cabinets. Portside is an Ultra-leather, right-angled couch with a dining table as well as a large window and storage cabinet. The ceiling has stainless steel handle bars for walking around the salon when foul weather has the boat rocking.

For overnight accommodations, the American Tug 365 has a large private stateroom placed forward on the boat. It includes a queen-sized berth with plenty of hanging lockers and storage spaces. There is a large head on the boat with a shower stall, sink, and extra storage. This is a great boat for a owner/operator and partner, but if guests are coming along the settee in the salon can be converted to a bed.

• Fifty Feet of Perfection: American…

Last winter a customer approached me about joining our Waggoner Cruise to Alaska in May. He had a new 485 American Tug under construction and said he expected delivery three weeks before dpearture. Naturally I was skeptical. Could the builder really deliver the boat by the time we departed? Could all the new boat bugs really be worked out before embarking on an ambitious trip?

Later I learned that not only was this a new boat, but an entirely new model. My skepticism increased.

Thankfully American Tug has a reputation for well-built boats with few problems. And their recently expanded staff of fiberglass laminators, woodworkers, and other skilled marine tradespeople was well up to the taks of deliverying the boat with time to spare.

As this articles goes to press, hull #1 of the American Tug 485 is well on her way to Alaska with nothing but glowing reviews from her owners.

Construction and Design The American Tug 485 is based on the proved 435 model. The 485 shares the same hard-chine hull that has made the 435 a top performer and top seller. To create the 485, American Tugs lengthened the 435’s salon and hull by five and a half feet. the 435’s cockpit, pilothouse and two-stateroom, two-head layout below decks remain essentially unchanged.

Approaching hull #1 at the dock, though, I was immediately struck by her size. The 435 is an imposing boat, and the 485 takes it to the next level. Her bow towers over the water and her forward-raked pilothouse windows add a work boat aura. Moving aft, the extra length in the salon is immediately noticeable, thanks to an extra window that’s been added.

A single Cummins QSC8.3 generating 550 hp. is standard on the 485. She can cruise comfortably at 8 knots for a range of 1440 nautical miles, or faster at 14 knots with a reduced range of 400 nautical miles. The 485 makes light work of small chop, and we suspect she’ll tackle larger seas with ease.

Notably, her length overall of 49′ 9″ means she’ll fit in a 50-foot slip with no overhang. This will lower operating costs and allow the 485 access to many older marinas that have limited space for larger boats.

Like all American Tugs, the 485 is built with solid fiber-glass below the waterline. Above the waterline, the hull is vacuum bagged and foam cored to add strength and insulation.

American Tug goes to great lengths to minimize engine noise and vibration. Several inches of high-quality sound deadening material line the engine room, ensuring that machinery noises stay in the engine room.

Interior and Layout ​The 485 has a wide swim step, complete with “staple” style handholds for extra security. Entering the salon through a wide Diamond-Seaglaze door, my first impressions were “This is bigger than I expected,” and, “This is the most highly customized American Tug I’ve ever been on.”

The East-coast buyers of hull #1 worked closely with the team at American Tugs to craft a liveaboard cruiser worthy of calling home. Their immediate cruising plans call for a summer shakedown cruise to South-east Alaska, followed by shipping the boat to the East Coast and beginning an open ended tour of the Great Loop.

The interior styling of hull #1 is a departure from most American Tugs. Rich, wide, plank-style wood floors cover the sole throughout and lend a contemporary air to the cabin. Dark granite countertops, black leather surfaces, horizontal-themed tile back splashes, and colorful accents complete the contemporary theme.

Inside the salon, the large settee to port and two loose chairs to starboard create a delightful lounging area. Just forward of the settee is the U-shaped galley complete with three burner gas cooktop, Isotherm refrigerator with two freezer drawers, and Sharp microwave/convection oven. A double basin sink and copious storage space round out the galley.

American Tug includes a second settee, ideal for four person dining, opposite the galley as standard, but the owners of hull #1 opted instead for a bar setup. The tasteful black granite countertop from the galley continues around the smaller, U-shaped bar. A stainless steel U-line icemaker and separate wine cooler are on the forward edge of the bar, and drawers and cubbies wrap around the rest of the area.

The pilothouse is a few steps up from the salon and galley. It’s equipped with a settee and separate, dedicated helm chair (very comfortable, I might add). The helm station itself has ample room for the latest electronics. Hull #1 is equipped with a full Garmin system with two 15-inch displays, and they’re nicely integrated into the cabinetry. Diamond-Seaglaze doors, both port and starboard, provide easy access to wide side decks. Large windows surround the pilothouse, offering excellent visibility.

Staterooms and heads are accessed from a staircase in the pilothouse. The master stateroom with en suite head is amidships, taking advantage of the full beam of the boat. A walkaround queen bed, with nightstands on each side lies athwart ship. Several hanging lockers and drawers provide copious storage space. The head is to starboard and features an electric toilet, huge stall shower, and plenty of space to store toiletries and towels.

The guest stateroom, also with en suite head, is forward. It has a large sideberth, hanging locker, and several large cubbies and drawers. The head, to starboard, has an electric toilet and stall shower.

​Systems ​American Tugs is committed to systems excellence. The 485 is equipped with premium equipment through-out, all installed expertly by craftsmen in La Conner, Washington.

The engine room in the 485 is large, but without standing headroom. Nevertheless, systems access is generally excellent.

Standard 485’s come with nearly 1000 amp hours of battery capacity, ideal for spending silent time on the hook. The standard Northern Lights 9kW generator will keep the batteries topped off when away from civilization, and a 2000 watt Magnum inverter will run many AC loads without the need to turn on the generator.

Either a hydronic diesel furnace or an air conditioning/reverse cycle heat system is standard, depending on where the boat is destined to cruise.

Sidepower’s new, highly regarded SEP series of variable speed DC bow and stern thrusters are standard, providing precise control of the 485 around the clock.

​Conclusions ​American Tug’s new 485 is an ideal couples cruiser- easy enough for two (or even one) person to handle around the docks, yet it has sufficient interior space for a couple to liveaboard for extended periods. And that’s just wheat the owners of hull #1 are doing, first to Alaska, then around the eastern coast of the U.S..

The American Tug 435 is a highly capable yacht. Take her anywhere: explore the Inside Passage to Alaska, the California coast south to Mexico; cruise the Great Lakes, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Bahamas, or complete America's Great Loop.

  Designed for cruisers who want to stay out longer, the 435 features a two stateroom/two head configuration. The primary stateroom has a beam-to-beam layout with generous storage and an ensuite head. The guest stateroom has a Pullman queen and an additional ensuite head. The pilothouse offers excellent sight lines, generous spaces, helm chair and passenger seating with access doors to port and starboard. The salon features a large U-shaped galley, entertainment center, L-shaped settee and room for a floating lounge chair. 

 Standard equipment on this boat has been designed with the comfort and safety of a cruising couple in mind, including bow and stern thrusters, and an upper deck crane with hydraulic lift and rotation.

DORADO is in FANTASTIC Condition and has seen nothing but the best of care from her original owners. She is their 3rd American Tug and they ordered her new from the factory with all of the best options.

Upon entry in to the Saloon, you notice the Beautiful Sapele and Maple Flooring, Corian counter tops, stainless steel lights and fixtures.  The Spotless Galley is is forward to port in the salon.  The television is starboard, strategically located for easy viewing by everyone in the saloon with a sound system capable of supplying the pilot house and the saloon with a nice audio experience. The silhouette blinds provide different levels of privacy yet allowing a soft light in to the saloon from the large framed windows.

Three steps up, you enter the pilot house with an ice maker at the top of the stairs to port and an additional freezer to starboard. The helm console is spacious, yet leaves plenty of windshield view for comfortable operation. A very comfortable LeBroc Helm Chair is center of the Pilothouse. The Pilothouse sole is Beautiful Sapele and Maple and cabinetry matches the saloon.  A beautiful overhead recessed light fixture with an oval teak panel, highlighted with a compass rose, provides an impressive nighttime ambiance.  The pilot house settee and table is a great place for guests to ride and have a nice all around view of the scenery. There are tight sealed doors on both sides of the pilot house.

DORADO is a Pleasure to drive from the big comfortable pilot seat,  the pilot house is air conditioned  for your comfort and visibility is great out of the large windshield. 

 Off to starboard, down stairs are the two staterooms.  The guest stateroom and ensuite private head is forward, with full shower, and Electric Head,  There is a double bed with a high end mattress for your guests comfort.  A  Washer/ Dryer Combination is tucked away in the forward closet. A hatch leads to below deck storage and offers access to the bow thruster and other mechanical items.

Aft, Around, and down a few more steps is the master suite.  It has a full walk around queen bed with night stands on both sides, hanging lockers, and abundant drawers. The en-suite Master head features an Electric Flush Head, Beautiful vanity, and large shower.

Both staterooms have plenty of natural light and storage, plus their own dedicated air conditioning system.

Beginning with the American Tug 365, you may think you’re at the wrong bay as she has the appearance of a mini 60-foot trawler type vessel. This baby cruiser lacks nothing in the way of efficiency and practicality. If you’re looking for a true cruiser, you’ll quickly come to see that she is built for just that. From the way she was built, to her outside design, to her large windows that are perfect for bringing the fresh sea air in.

Her performance is a true plus as great care was taken when it came to the design and decision of what engines would fit best. The American Tug 365 definitely can get you where you’re looking to go in a speedy fashion, however, keep in mind that she handles herself equally as well in a non-rushed, fuel efficient outing. Having chosen single Cummins 380HP engine, the 365 can move along at 17 knots, burning 20 gallons per hour or so. Puling her back a bit, she can slow things done to 9 knots and only burn 7 gallons or so per hour. Padded up well with good insulation, you’ll look forward to a quiet journey. .

For a 36 footer, you will be in awe as the how well equipped she is. Her forward starboard galley will be an exciting spot for the chef in the group with her amenities including a great propane cooktop, nice big window and ample storage cabinets. You’ll be able to hang onto her ceiling stainless steel handle bars for those rides that are a bit bumpier then you can handle.

"Sleep-aboards" are perfect aboard this sweetie with her spacious forward private stateroom decked out with a nice queen-sized berth, lots of hanging lockers and perfect storage. You’ll appreciate the large head onboard with a shower stall, and good storage. Suited very fine for an owner/operator and partner, however, the settee in the salon can be converted to a bed enabling you to invite a couple of friends to join you.

Her trawler-style classic hull shape and stylish design found on all of the Tomco Marine Group models will quickly grab your heart. Ready to cruise, then get her single Cummins 380 HP diesel engine revved up for a short trip doing 15 knots and for those longer trips, you’ll greatly appreciate her fuel-saving 8 knot cruise providing her owner with a 1,000 nautical mile range!

Send the invites out to your favorite friends as she has a two-stateroom, one head layout. Her queen-sized master with walk-around berth offers you good storage and closet space. Her guest stateroom features a larger bunk below with a smaller one above —also with ample storage. Her one main head is comfortable in size and features a stall shower.

One of the most popular cruising models Tomco Marine Group offers is The American Tug 435 due to her awesome features including the super popular, hard-chine hull, yet also a full fiberglass hull below the waterline.

Boasting a foam core which Tomco decided to vacuum-bag to give each owner the benefit of extra strength, durability, along with proper insulation on each American Tug 435.

Her single Cummins 500 HP engine, makes her most fuel efficient so those long voyages aren’t a drain to the fuel budget.

An extremely space conscious model, she can appear as if she’s a 50 footer —and even larger even though she measures in at 43' 7”. A styling wood interior and storage spaces everywhere, calls out for a multi-day trip of a lifetime aboard.

Looking for a show stopper, The American Tug 485 offers the ever-popular hard-chine hull along with the full fiberglass hull below sea level. The 485 has a foam core above the waterline which - like the 435, which she’s built after, also possesses.

Cruising at 14 knots with a range of 400 nautical miles with her Cummins QSC8.3 550 HP engine, this model credits itself for excellent fuel efficiency making those long-distance voyages a joy. At 8 knots, you can expect 1,440 nautical miles and enjoy the ride at a slower pace.

Her classic plank-style wood floors look sharp with her dark granite countertops. The highlight is her large windows for those spectacular views while cruising or hanging at the marina. A fully equipped galley will be a focal point for those wonderful meals that will be served to her guests.

A dedicated helm chair and settee will be your seats of choice in her nearby pilothouse —with customized built-in electronics. Diamond-Seaglaze doors open to both side decks to offer those aboard great views of the ever changing scenery.

Her two staterooms each with their own en suite head will make any guest and you and your partner, comfy. The midship full-beam master is most complete with a queen-sized, walk-around berth with two side tables and super storage. Your friends will feel great in its forward guest cabin where they can choose from a larger lower bunk or a smaller upper bunk.

Having started The American Tug story was the creation of Tomco Marine Group by founder and director Tom Nelson who collaborated with Lynn Senour, an accredited West Coast Marine architect. Tom and Lynn built wooden boats in Seattle. Tom, a young apprentice, continued proving himself in the shop and at one point, was made president of a boat yard. His company was founded a couple years later—named Nelson Yacht Corporation, he was building 70–90 foot custom yachts. Next on the timeline, was when Tom became President of Nordic Tugs which then turned into his developing Tomco Marine Group!

Alaskan born and President of Tomco Marie Group, Mike Schoppert, headed to the Pacific Northwest and attended Western Washington University. Uniflite Corporation was where he learned the necessary skills he would go on to using. Chris-Craft and Tolly Craft were also put on his resume but then he ended up at Oceanus, the spot where his tooling process was born and it’s facility with the ability to produce the fiberglass components for Zodiac. Mike went from the lamination department to general manager of Nordic Tugs prior to joining Tomco Marine Group.

The vice-president of Tomco Marine Group, Kurt Dilworth, also has a heart for boating starting out with Chambers Craft in the late 80’s and in the early 90’s, the remodeling of the company as Premier Boats. What’s under his belt? Well, several years of engineering at the local community college and the University of Washington along with a two-year apprenticeship on a conversion of a steel tug turned private yacht, he took a position with Nordic Tugs as a mechanic where his tasks spanned from installing engines, electrical systems to plumbing. He excelled to come to take on the head positions and, as they grew, held the position of Head Engineer as well as a newly developed warranty/customer service position.

So, the brains beyond these sturdy yet sweet in style Tugboats—Tom, Mike, and Kurt, seem to compliment each other’s leadership skills. With the formation of Tomco Marine Group, their expertise and steadfastness was poured into each of these pleasure tugs you are sure to appreciate for their true seaworthy design and superb craftsmanship.
