A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams. 

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s. 

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. If you want to keep the weight down and primarily go fast, then you can't have any boat with an innerliner. But in order to sell boats, the builders of course find it necessary to make it look presentable... lol I saw a nice catamaran today, it's a German design called Cabrio II, being sailed by Asia Pajkowska in the Ostar which just started (the Multi 50 Branec is doing that race). Nice looking cruiser, you'd need a very big trimaran to have as much space and privacy.

I'd not heard before but Carbon 3 had a M.O.B. during the Palby Fyn Cup which cost them some time and a headsail problem. We ended up pulling them onboard over the leeward float on the F-25A trimaran we were sailing on. That was a similar situation crewmember holding a spinnaker sheet and it flicked them overboard like a leaf.  
^^^ It's relatively sheltered water around Fyn compared with where you probably sail Corley. They could have let him swim to the nearest pub, and won the race instead. They don't like coming second to SAP's reserve boat (that team has two), so now they have to prove themselves in the Round Sjelland race, 13 June , I suppose?

Marlin 33 is the multihull of the year 2022

The foldable sailing trimaran Marlin 33 has won the prestigious ‘Best Multihull of 2022’ award, the world’s highest accolade for multihull sailing and motor boats. Awarded in recent days at the International Multihull Boat Show in La Grande Motte, France, the prize was consigned into the hands of the Marlin 33’s designer, Dane Jan Andersen , at a special ceremony.

Mr Andersen is the head of Vision Boats , a small Danish team specializing in the design of multihull yachts that has an established working relationship with Marlin Trimarans. Designer, builder and sailor, with the Marlin 33 Mr Andersen has developed a trimaran for both racing and cruising that combines extreme sailing speed, great comfort and attention to aesthetics. It is one of the fastest trimarans in the world, built entirely in carbon with a set of innovations that have distinguished the work of Marlin Trimarans and Vision Boats, in particular its characteristic of being foldable and thus easily trailerable , but also easily assembled by just two people. The Marlin 33 won over the public at La Grande Motte: not only did the boat come top of the “Sailing Multihulls up to 40 feet” classification, it also received the most votes overall (47.36%) to win the first overall prize as the best multihull of the year, beating all the other boats and yachts in the competition .

As well as offering above-average sailing performance in its category, also thanks to its extreme lightness (the boat weighs just 1460 kilograms ), Marlin 33 has ample space on board to comfortably accommodate an entire family even on long distance cruises, with the saloon measuring 1.95 metres in height, cabins to accommodate six people and a table seating eight. The trimaran is also very easy to steer, offering easy handling and excellent visibility, especially in the two-rudder option. It is equipped with a 450W solar panel to power the Torqeedo electric motor, lights and on-board equipment, making it completely energy autonomous.

2024 Boat of the Year: Best Performance Trimaran

For the first time ever in the 29-year history of Boat of the Year , we’re introducing a new class to the proceedings: Performance Trimarans. To make things spicier, the two nominees not only shared the same length overall of 40 feet, but they also came in at the near-identical price point of around $800,000 for the base boat. 

Beyond those two parameters, however, the different approaches from these disparate brands were interesting and exciting. Cruising trimarans, though rare, are nothing new; the well-established Neel line of French-built trimarans has enjoyed plenty of success in previous BOTY contests. With that said, the judging panel was champing at the bit to put these fresh three-hull whizzes through their paces. And once under sail, we were definitely not disappointed. 

Winner: Dragonfly 40

Let’s cut right to the chase: The Dragonfly 40 had judge Tim Murphy swooning straight from hello: “This is an exquisite yacht in every detail. When you step aboard, the new-boat smell was not of styrene but of a wood shop. Built in Denmark by the Quorning family (designer and builder Jens Quorning took us on the test sail), it’s just a beautiful boat to look at from across the water. The wheel steering—no tiller here—was butter-smooth. Thanks to the boat’s extremely fine hulls, on our test sail we hardly felt any jerks or deceleration as we passed through several Severn River boat wakes. There were AGM batteries on this boat, but a lithium-battery system is an option. The kick-up centerboard and rudder are ingenious: Quorning as much as invited us to ground the boat on a shoal. From barber haulers to boom preventers, it’s full of great sailing details.”

Judge Mark Pillsbury was equally impressed: “As we finished up our all-too-brief sea trial aboard the Dragonfly 40, I scribbled ‘Top shelf!!!’ in my notebook. We had the benefit of sailing the boat with its thoroughly detail-oriented builder, who pointed to the seemingly endless features he’d employed to make this maybe the most memorable sailing boat of the year. At one point, I looked down at the GPS speed-over-ground number, which read 6 knots, then glanced at the true wind gauge: 5.2! Faster than the wind! The interior of the Dragonfly was elegant, with the furniture rendered in elm—not a wood we often see. But most impressive was the walk-in aft cabin instead of the crawl-in bunk often found in the narrow confines of a tri’s slender center hull.” 

Judge Herb McCormick was as astonished as his colleagues: “There isn’t a thing on the Dragonfly that Quorning hasn’t thought long and hard about, and then executed to a stellar degree. Take that centerboard arrangement, which is built into the central dining table and is integrated so well into the interior that it’s a functional piece of furniture as well as a foolproof cruising solution. What else can we say? It’s a magnificent freaking boat.”

Runner-up: Rapido Trimarans 40

The design brief for the Rapido 40 is straightforward: fast cruising and racing for a couple or crew; ocean-ready but able to sail and moor in shallow water. Nobody was more psyched to sail the boat than judge Herb McCormick, who was not disappointed. 

“I was first exposed to the brand at a multihull regatta in the Caribbean, where a larger Rapido 50 was in attendance,” he said. “I was on another boat, and we spent a lot of time looking at the Rapido’s transom. Then I stepped aboard the Rapido 40 for our trials and was handed the tiller extension; under the code zero, in about 15 seconds, we were making 14 knots. Whoa!”

Judge Mark Pillsbury said: “From stem to stern, the Rapido 40 came packed with features, including a double-taper carbon rotating mast, a Park Avenue-style boom for easy sail handling, daggerboards for upwind performance, and a very comfy cockpit. There’s an optional all-carbon version of the boat, including the drawers in the galley. The layout, with a comfortable V-berth and raised table in the salon—offering outstanding views of the great outdoors—is cruising-couple friendly.”

Judge Tim Murphy added: “The Rapido 40 is built in Vietnam by Paul Koch, the previous owner of Corsair Marine who started Rapido Trimarans in 2014. Rapido builds three models, all designed by the renowned team of Morrelli & Melvin. Our test boat had the standard infused construction, which is mostly E-glass with vinylester resin and a PVC core. There’s also carbon fiber near the bulkheads where the crossbeams meet. Carbon-fiber C-foils in the amas are intriguing and provide lift in two directions: up (to reduce sailing displacement but not fly) and to windward. Sailing the boat on the raised web seat with the tiller extension is gorgeous. It feels very sporty. Rapido’s latest claim to fame: The YouTube channel Sailing La Vagabonde has taken delivery of a Rapido 60, which will definitely raise the profile of the brand.”

About the construction

The NEEL 52’s construction mirrors that of the other models in the range, using the techniques and materials:  Vacuum-infused composite sandwich with triaxial fibre reinforcements.

It is worth noting that NEEL-TRIMARANS uses PVC and PET foams in the sandwich core – unlike other multihull manufacturers who use Balsa, which, though certainly cheaper, alters the quality of the sandwich core as it is more sensitive to water infiltration.

Resins and gelcoats have also been improved with a view to limiting styrene emissions.

NEEL 52

NEEL-TRIMARANS once again entrusts the design of the NEEL 52 to Lombard , following on from NEEL 47 and the NEEL 43 .

Basing their design on the NEEL 47 and NEEL 43’s sailing experiences, the Lombard firm has consolidated the positive attributes, the hull’s voluminous floats and high freeboard.

The hulls of NEEL trimarans combine a central ‘rockered’ hull, which facilitates tacking and manoeuvring when in port, with streamlined floats that provide stability and prevent pitching.

The design of the hulls for the NEEL 52 also had to consider the load on long distance voyages. The load capacity of the NEEL 52 is 19.5 tons.

Cruising programs, finesse of the helm and rigging

The NEEL 52 is a beautifully-sized, fast, and voluminous trimaran. It therefore offers a vast range of sailing possibilities. Everything’s possible, from peaceful cruising to long-distance travel and rally racing.

The various configurations of the NEEL 52 (4, 5, 6 double cabins), with 0,1,2 crew positions are suited to individual owners or charter companies.

NEEL trimarans are renowned for their unrivalled steering . This stems from the unique rudder design, manoeuvred by textile steering lines on ball bearing blocks. The rudder stock is mounted on self-aligning bearings.

The sail plan comprises a mainsail (with 3 reefs) and a staysail on a rolling furler (on a structural wire inside the sail).

The asymmetrical spinnaker makes it easier to comfortably sail downwind.

There are 2 rigging options to choose from:

  • Conventional rigging : the mast and boom are made of aluminium while the standing rigging is made of stainless-steel wires.
  • High-performance rigging: the mast is made of carbon with an aluminium boom and the standing rigging is made of textiles (except for the forestay which remains a wire) (70cm difference in height between the two mast versions).

All manoeuvres lead back to the helmsman who enjoys an unobstructed 360° view at the helm.

Life on board

The NEEL 52 features the renowned Cockloon® , an impressive interior/exterior living space made possible by the wide opening between the cockpit and the saloon. It also incorporates the Full Beam Cockpit®, an extra-wide cockpit with multiple seating configurations that can be rearranged to take full advantage of the different vistas

The helm station is particularly ergonomic and has a triple seat.  Its access, from the cockpit via side steps or from the deck, ensures seamless communication between the skipper and the crew. 

The roof is reached by side steps leading up from the cockpit and on the helm side, rendering the mast, boom, sun-deck, and sun-lounging area easily accessible.  Around this area, a secure handrail has been incorporated for safe movement aboard.  The wide, well-protected stern skirts make it easier to access the sea and manoeuvre the dinghy.

In addition, the system for lifting and handling the dinghy has been greatly simplified.

There are various different versions of the NEEL 52 available, with 4,5,6 cabins, an owner cabin on one level or a huge saloon, 1 or 2 crew positions, so that you can set up your boat according to your preferences and requirements. 

The living space on one level is highly ergonomic and entirely open plan, offering exceptional luminosity. The kitchen and the chart table face forwards. The panoramic view from this huge saloon is breathtaking.

Both elegant and simple, the decoration ( high-end upholstery , top-quality carpentry , solid wood , bolon and corian) lends the NEEL 52 a look of timeless distinction and gives the ample living space a calming atmosphere.  Flow of movement on board is smooth, and the cabins are accessed via private stairs.

When designing his IC36 catamaran, the manager of the Independent Catamarans shipyard did, of course, pay great attention to the rig: So, the mast? Aluminum or carbon? Jaromír Popek shares with us his studies and the feedback gained from his sea trials. And this will give some food for thought when the question of a carbon option is put forward by a builder, but also if you’re undertaking a performance-oriented refit or perhaps following major damage to the original rig.

A carbon mast has many advantages such as weight savings aloft and greater stiffness. But it comes at a price…

The ropes beating against the jungle of aluminum masts often conjure up a fantastic symphony upon arrival at the marina, with the promise of wind and thus freedom of travel. You may have noticed that not every mast makes the same chiming sound. The composite or carbon ones just do not chime. Perhaps, that’s a bit of a shame, from a music-lover’s point of view, but for many other reasons this technology has its proper justification. Multihulls and their owners carrying such rigging are duly proud of this hi-tech equipment and the black color, which is the natural color of carbon-fiber, often draws attention to it. Ambitious ‘aluminum’ sailors sometimes try to mimic this phenomenon too, but only by the use of black paint on the masts and boom surfaces. I should also mention the fact that while black paint on the surfaces of anything on a multihull looks confident and sexy, it is also quite impractical in terms of maintaining a reasonable surface temperature. After all, climbing a mast in a marina that has a surface temperature of well over eighty degrees at midday requires a bit of skill and appropriate clothing and shoes. Anyway, who cares, when you’re then leaving harbor, you’re suddenly king, the center of attention and you enjoy the respect. But the issue is not all that simple. If you opt for a carbon mast, the rest of the rigging needs to match. No stainless-steel vents, but a lightweight carbon or performance fabric. All of this together brings with it a massive increase in performance, increased safety, but also higher costs.

Carbon vs aluminum

In terms of technical properties, the carbon mast has an advantage over the aluminum mast in several respects. It is at least 35 to 45% lighter and has a lower center of gravity, which is a very important feature in terms of dynamics, knock effect and safety. It tends to be considerably stiffer, but at the same time retains some flexibility for handling overloading. It just won’t chip, but if it does and there is damage, it’s easier to repair than aluminum.

Lighter, stiffer, more dynamic

So the aluminum mast is heavier, but that’s not the only thing going on here. The thickness of the aluminum mast profile is uniform along its entire length. At the time of sizing the mast, the yard selects from predefined profiles available in the market, taking into account the «righting moment», or the multihull’s heeling effect, with a precise determination of the load on the burdened parts of the boat and the mast itself. The carbon mast is subject to many calculations, one of which is the identification of structural areas to be fitted with additional layers of fabric with the appropriate fiber direction exactly where such reinforcement is needed. On the other hand, the profile wall is made thinner where possible, so that the overall weight balance achieves greater savings, and the center of gravity shifts significantly lower towards the waterline. Frankly, we can find two advantages in an aluminum mast compared to a carbon mast: - it is undoubtedly easier to sleeve in the event of breakage (and lack of budget to buy a new one - we remain on the same subject). - In the event of rough conditions leading to a capsize, the aluminum mast can break, unlike the carbon one, which will have to rely on the guying to eventually fuse. Description

The BLUE COAST 160` has extendable side hulls. At sea, the overall width of 23 m then offers very stable sailing even in rougher seas. With the side hulls retracted, the yacht, which is only 11 m wide, finds suitable berths in marinas and harbours. The shallow draft allows anchoring close to the most beautiful beaches.

The energy concept is also revolutionary: all the energy required on board comes from renewable sources. Of course, the latest battery management system (BMS) technology with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries is part of the overall concept. This means that exclusive ports can be entered with renewable energy. Additional requested energy can be generated by an optional hybrid propulsion system.

The customised luxurious interior design is also by Jean-Jacques Coste. Of course, a garage for the owner's car "matching" the yacht has also been thought of; it can get on and off the yacht via the retractable platform.

With a twinkle in the eye, here is a note on the term "yacht" : At the christening of the new "Brittania" by Queen Elizabeth II, a journalist asked why a vessel of 126 m length with a crew of 236 and 5.769 GRT could be be called a "yacht"? A member of the Royal Family gave him a convincing answer: "The use of the term yacht does not depend on the type, length, weight or size of the crew of a vessel, but on the status of the owner!"

World acclaimed designers and engineers,  Morrelli & Melvin  have ensured that the DNA of the Rapido 60 has been incorporated into the all carbon and folding Rapido 40. It is a state of the art trimaran designed and built for:

The Rapido 40 is a high tech, all-carbon, performance cruiser with a s elf-tacking jib, c arbon spreaderless mast and an o ption for a roller furling boom.

The interiors have super lightweight, strong, custom made furniture; even the countertops and drawers are carbon! The flooring is made from cork.

While others are compelled to motor away from weather systems best avoided, the Rapido can be powered up to simply sail away with the skipper maintaining complete control.

Safety is a big factor in our design and construction. As well as carbon-foam construction, there are multiple watertight bulkheads. The engine compartment is contained within watertight bulkheads.

We build our own epoxy prepreg autoclave-cured mast and boom (designed by Morrelli & Melvin , specifically for the Rapido 40), as well as dagger C foils, rudders, beams, chainplate bulkheads, folding struts, pulpits, seats, table, benchtop and drawers (in galley).

Essentially, if you have a passion for sailing, this is the boat for you!

The Rapido 40 is built by Rapido Trimarans’ exclusive builder,  Triac Composites .

The asymmetric twin “C” foils give the Rapido 40 more lift than usual resulting in a significant increase in performance, both upwind and downwind. Also, the C foils eliminate the need for a central daggerboard which increases the amount of interior space. It also creates 360 degree visibility. (In the diagram above, note the “T" rudder foil in the “down" position.)

For normal day sailing or cruising, both C foils can be in the “down" position or one raised without adding material drag.

Pennsylvania authorizes regulations for carbon capture wells

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania legislation aimed at helping the nation’s No. 2 natural gas-producing state attract carbon capture projects and enable federally funded hydrogen hubs was approved by lawmakers Thursday night despite criticism that the technology is unproven.

The Republican-penned bill authorizes the Department of Environmental Protection to write regulations to oversee underground wells that store carbon dioxide, a critical component of carbon capture and removal technology that supporters envision as a way to slow climate change.

The bill passed both the House and Senate and was sent to Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro’s desk.

Opponents say it is experimental and expensive compared to other ways of fighting climate change, such as boosting energy conservation and renewable energies. They also say carbon capture has been oversold as a climate change solution and merely will spawn pipelines and extend the life of a fossil fuel industry that burns oil, coal and natural gas.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is otherwise responsible for permitting carbon storage wells in all but three states. Proponents of states taking over permitting say it will speed up approvals of new projects that are critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Backers say attracting carbon capture projects to Pennsylvania will be an integral part of building out two hydrogen hubs recently awarded by the Biden administration.

The two hydrogen hubs are part of a $7 billion federal program designed to kickstart development and production of hydrogen fuel , a key component of President Joe Biden’s agenda to slow climate change by replacing fossil fuels with a cleaner fuel.

The Biden administration has increased tax breaks for developers of carbon capture projects and provided large grants. Developers have responded, flooding the EPA with permit applications for new wells, but only a handful of carbon capture projects are currently operating, and few wells have been approved so far.

Today, Patch published an open letter calling on the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to provide swift and decisive guidance for companies to use high-integrity carbon credits for Scope 3 abatement.

From the frontlines of supporting companies in the implementation of their climate strategies, Patch has seen first hand the adverse impacts this lack of guidance is creating, sidelining critical funding for climate solutions across the globe. The risk to our planet is too great to stay silent.

The open letter is pasted below and my corresponding comment linked here.

Dear Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi),

I’m writing on behalf of Patch, a leading carbon credit platform at the forefront of the voluntary carbon market (VCM), whose mission is to channel capital into critical climate solutions.

Patch helps companies develop and implement effective carbon credit strategies as part of their broader climate action plans. This gives us a clear view of the opportunities and challenges of deploying corporate climate finance to carbon removal and avoidance projects. Our interactions with over 500 corporate customers across the globe has made it clear that the uncertainty surrounding whether carbon credits can be used to address Scope 3 emissions as part of SBTi-validated targets is preventing companies from channeling finance to these essential climate solutions.

We understand that SBTi plans to release a discussion paper on this topic in July 2024. However, SBTi has also indicated that the final revised corporate net-zero standard, which will provide companies with clear guidance on how carbon credits can be used to help address emissions a company indirectly affects within its value chain (known as Scope 3 emissions), will not be completed until Q4 of 2025 . This timeline is too long.  

The planet cannot wait. We are deeply concerned about the negative climate impact of waiting another 18 months for decisive guidance on the use of high-integrity carbon credits for Scope 3 abatement.  
Patch is therefore calling for accelerated guidance from SBTi on using high-integrity carbon credits for Scope 3 emissions abatement by Q4 of 2024 at the latest.

Since 2015, SBTi has played a leading role in bringing scientific rigor and scrutiny to corporate climate action, helping the private sector develop robust strategies for reducing their emissions. Just as the urgency with which we need to tackle the climate crisis has increased over the last decade, so too has the role the voluntary carbon market can play in these efforts. Now, by leveraging the work already done by the broader community, SBTi has every tool required to act rapidly on updating its guidance, while still maintaining the scientific rigor of the initiative.

Scores of academic experts and third-party standards organizations have united around defining and implementing high-integrity carbon credit markets, including The Oxford Offsetting Principles , The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Markets’ Core Carbon Principles , and VCMI Claims Code of Practice . The G7 and the U.S. federal government have also shown clear support for corporate use of high-integrity carbon credits and the U.S. has called for immediate resolution to questions around the use of credits to address Scope 3 emissions.

Independent studies conducted in the last 12 months also demonstrate that corporate use of high-integrity carbon credits are consistently correlated with greater climate ambition and action overall. A recent report found carbon credit buyers spend three times more on emissions reductions and are 1.3 times more likely to have supplier engagement strategies than companies who are not participating in the voluntary carbon market. Another report found that 71% of corporate leaders agreed that participation in the voluntary carbon market allows their company to take additional climate action, which otherwise wouldn’t happen without purchasing carbon credits.

Having co-founded and led a rapidly scaling company over the last four years, I can empathize with the challenges organizations face in building and delivering new products while managing complex stakeholder relationships and external pressure. But climate action is a team sport. Patch is ready and willing to support SBTi in accelerating their work with frontline evidence on corporate behavior and barriers to action, while leveraging rigorous and technology-driven tracking of carbon credit purchases to facilitate market transparency.  

Again, SBTi must act swiftly and release clear guidance defining how corporations should leverage high-integrity carbon credits to deploy rapid climate finance, or risk a legacy of delaying climate action for the planet.
