O'Pari: Inside Golden Yachts' 95m flagship crafted for charter

The 95 metre flagship of Golden Yachts is designed to offer the ultimate charter experience, discovers Sam Fortescue

It may feel trite, but one of the first things I wanted to know about the brand-new 95-metre yacht O’Pari from Greece’s Golden Yachts is how she got her name. She is the eleventh in the O’ franchise and the largest to date, but what does the “O” mean to the Dragnis dynasty whose sprawling business empire built, owns and charters her?

“It heralds back to Ancient Greece,” explains patriarch Paris Dragnis, “where people often greeted each other formally with an “Ω” exclamation (the equivalent of the Roman “Ave”, meaning “hail”). And in truth, our clients love it: it’s a way to make our yachts really stand out. It’s been our trademark since the first O’Pari was built in 1996.”

There is an unusual business model behind the rapid rise of the Greek shipbuilder. The yachts in its O’ range are managed by Atalanta Golden Yachts , and sometimes used in a personal capacity by Dragnis before they are sold, generating income and useful feedback from clients. After the award-winning 39.5-metre O’Pati in 2011 there came 72-metre O’Pari in 2015, 56-metre O’Mathilde and 85-metre O’Ptasia in 2018 and, most recently, O’Pari . “One day we’ll be able to construct 125-metre yachts!” exclaims Dragnis. “But let’s be clear about something: Golden Yachts vessels are not all about size; they are about all-round excellence.”

The building of O’Pari certainly required all-round investment to expand capacity at Golden Yachts’ Halkitis shipyard, near Piraeus. “It was a demanding project,” admits Dragnis. And the business is in the process of equipping a second yard nearby, “so we can better segregate, organise and execute the different stages of construction,” he adds.

For all the challenges posed by growth, there is one element of O’Pari’s build that was relatively plain sailing. As with all Dragnis’s boats, the design work was done by his close friend Giorgio Vafiadis in a collaboration whose simplicity might be the envy of designers everywhere. “First of all, we’re friends,” the Rome-based naval architect tells me in lilting English. “Usually with Dragnis I know what he wants, and he knows what he can expect from me. Our brief is very, very short: such-and-such a boat of such-and-such a length; good for charter but also for private use; capable of this kind of speed – general requirements.

“Then we do a design or two. Usually they like what we present – we never have to present it twice. Dragnis is very quick – two minutes to decide and once he makes a decision, he makes it very easy. There’s no back and forth like other people do. The fact we’ve done lots of boats for the family means we know what they want.”

Dragnis says he likes to imagine how people will use the boats, scouring trade shows around the world for new equipment and design ideas. “It is never easy to please different personalities from different backgrounds. During the first design phase, we were aiming for a contemporary aesthetic all over the yacht, married with diverse details, finishes and amenities in each area so as to satisfy even the most demanding client,” he says of O’Pari . “So far, we’ve been blessed with great clients: the global business and political elite, royalty, you name it. I have no doubt they’ve enjoyed sailing in our yachts immensely.”

As well as a multiplicity of little corners inside and out where guests can relax undisturbed, charter has left its mark on the boat in other ways. There is a cavernous and well-stocked garage for tenders and toys (more on that below) and a surprising 14 cabins in various formats to accommodate the maximum of 12 guests. There are even two master cabins: a full-beam suite with an onyx bath on the main deck, and another with 180-degree views occupying the front of the upper deck. “I could not decide which is the master-master,” says Vafiadis with a smile.

Each cabin has its own range of rare or precious woods and fabrics. In a mostly darker, slightly masculine palette, they include beautifully grained wooden panelling in ebony, ash, lime and walnut burr combined with metallic detailing to beds and night-stands. Every carpet is different but, being neutral, contrast with patterned wood, wallpaper and fabrics, while en suite bathrooms showcase contrasting Greek marbles and mosaics.

“Having many colours or many woods, it takes more time,” says Vafiadis. “Instead of making the selection once, you have to do it five or six times; then match the marbles with five or six different types of wood. The balance of the interior is in the detailing: many different woods with different patterns. They are nice because many of these woods have three-dimensional textures – not just a matter of colours or looks; you can feel the materials if you touch a bulkhead or a drawer. You can feel them with all the five senses.”

The finish is flawless, with carefully designed indirect lighting drawing the eye here, or highlighting a feature there. But Vafiadis has clearly eschewed the temptation to include excessive elaborate flourishes. There is an almost northern European purity to some of the design, but the term “minimalism” seems inadequate for such a complex toy. “It is a modern interior but not the kind that is too temporary,” explains Vafiadis. “Where you invest a lot of money, you don’t want things to last for just three or four years. Many types of people can like the boat.”

The large, unfussy windows are more architectural than marine. Providing views of the anchorage from every bed, they give the sense that you are staying in a luxurious hotel by the water, rather than in a boat on the water. This bright, natural lighting effect was a key part of Dragnis’s brief, and is at its most powerful in the communal living areas of O’Pari . In fact, he describes it now as his favourite feature of the boat. “It is unmediated contact with the light and the water. When you sit in O’Pari’s upper saloon, you can see the water; you really feel you’re travelling on the high seas. I like trying to imagine what the people who will be enjoying our yachts might feel and experience on board: what would fascinate them the most?”

Vafiadis’s son and design partner Stefano took the lead on the exterior styling of the yacht. “She has strong and masculine curves but she’s elegant and timeless at the same time,” he says. “Generally, our style is cultural, so instead of making flat shapes, volumes, we try to make something that raises many emotions in the viewer, while respecting function. Balance is our secret.”

Just as the boat’s interior provides different spaces for different people and different moods, so the exterior ecosystem is broken down into lots of smaller habitats. There’s epic dining aft on the upper deck or something more intimate around a smaller, round table on the sundeck; sofas in a U-formation on the main deck, in a D-shape around a sunken firepit above that, or lounging on a large slew of sunpads around the pool on the bridge deck. Or head up another flight of stairs to the open-topped sundeck and percolate in the spa pool; perhaps watch a movie there under the stars. And we haven’t even set foot in the huge beach club with its massage room, dry Finnish sauna and Turkish hammam.

For the more active-inclined guest, there is the whole gamut of on-water entertainment. The four tenders include a 9.75-metre Onda limousine (with its own garage), a 4.4-metre Avon with a 60 horsepower outboard, a 6.2-metre Cobra Patronus and a Chris-Craft Launch 27 for watersports and a beach lander. A never-ending list of toys includes three Sea-Doos, four Seabobs, two Fliteboards, kayaks, tubes, slides, skis and boards and even a brace of four-metre Hobie stand-up pedalboards (yes, apparently that is a thing).

“Whether guests want to explore local bays, enjoy a beach barbecue or perhaps try out some watersports, O’Pari offers some of the best facilities of any charter yacht,” says captain Diamantis Papageorgiou proudly. “The guests have the ability to try something new every day.”

Papageorgiou says the new boat is more agile thanks to better handling characteristics, a turn of speed and seamless mooring operations. “It urges me to approach even the most inaccessible places – I know that, despite her length and overall size, she can follow my commands!” His enthusiasm for the yacht is clear as he describes her “grand presence”. Like the Ancient Greek empire she harks back to, she has been making waves as far east as the Red Sea. “Wherever she was spotted, she stole the show and became the Instagram star!”

What is Advance Provisioning Allowance – APA

When chartering a crewed yacht under MYBA terms or special Europe Yacht Charter terms on the fully crewed yachts, you will be required to make a deposit in advance of the charter, which is separate to the charter or booking fee.

This deposit is called the “advance provisioning allowance” or APA. The APA amount is used to cover expenses incurred during the course of the charter such as fuel, food, beverages, mooring fees, visa fees, harbour fees, park fees, taxes, and other expenses not included in the Charter Fee. In the event of cancellation of the charter the APA is refundable.

The captain of the yacht is responsible for accounting for all APA expenses during the charter, and the breakdown will be presented to you in a clear manner at the end of the charter.

If the costs incurred during the course of the charter are less than the APA deposit, then the difference will be refunded to the Charterer at the end of the charter.

If the costs incurred during the course of the charter that are over and above the APA deposit then this difference will be payable by the Charterer at the end of the charter.

What is the cancellation policy?

If the Client wants to change the charter terms or cancel the reservation, this must be done in writing (via e-mail, fax, or post.)

If the Client cancels the reservation in writing, Charteree reserves the right to apply the following cancellation charges:

• In the event of a cancellation made up to 45 days prior to the start date of the charter period Charteree charges 50% of the Charter Fee.
• In the event of a cancellation made within 45 days prior to the start of the charter period Charteree charges 100% of the Charter Fee.
• In the event of a cancellation made after check-in Charteree retains 100% of the Charter Fee and charges to the Client all expenses incurred as a result of the cancellation.

If the Client is able to find a new rental client for the same period of the charter and under the same terms and conditions, Charteree reserves the right to charge for any administrative and manipulative costs incurred by the change.

In the event that the Client has to cancel the reservation due to objective reasons (death in the family or serious illness), Charteree is not liable to return the paid amount, but if the Client rents the vessel in the same period Charteree will organize charter on other adequate vessel for the next appropriate date or for the next season, i.e. Charteree will issue a credit note that can be used in the agreed period.

The credit note is calculated taking into account the difference between the cancelled reservation and the reservation later confirmed for the same vessel and in the same period. Charteree is not liable for damages in the event of reservation changes or cancellation due to situations such as war, riot, strikes, terrorist activity, exceptional sanitary conditions, natural disasters, interventions of local authorities, etc.)

When can I get in touch with the skipper?

You can get in touch with the skipper as soon as you’ve completed your booking.

Our skippers are highly qualified and knowledgeable about their locality. They all speak English. The skipper is to be payed in the marina at the check in (for crewed charter, the crew is already included in the price)

COVID-19 cancellation

We understand that there is an uncertainty regarding travel plans this year. For that reason we are offering free reschedule of the charter.

In case of travel restrictions or a CDC Travel Health Notice for any country to/from the charter destination will be issued and it won’t be possible for charterers to reach charter destination then:

Constructed by Golden Yachts with the launch date in 2020, superyacht O'PARI measures 94.6m/310.4ft and boasts the interior and exterior styling of the renowned Studio Vafiadis. Disembark from the tender onto the lower deck swim platform, which has plenty of room for sunbathing beside the water as an extension of the beach club or for spreading out with the water toys. Two stairways lead up to the main deck aft, where a C-shaped sofa lines the stern and two tables create a casual place for the group to dine, drink or spend time on hobbies and conversation in the sunshine.

The upper deck is the main alfresco dining area and provides an elegant setting off the skylounge where up to 16 guests can enjoy a meal at the circular table placed in the shade before savouring drinks at the three sofas along the stern. The foredeck can be accessed via side walkways from the main deck and here a helipad and a flush foredeck create a large space for sunbathing or outdoor exercise such as yoga.

The bridge deck boasts an aft swimming pool/Jacuzzi surrounded on three sides by sunbeds, and an armchair is placed to port and starboard beneath the shade of the overhang.

The sundeck is ready to host a part day or night and provides a fantastic sunbathing area forwards where sunbeds surround a raised Jacuzzi. Under the shade of the hardtop a wet bar is placed forward to port, while a circular alfresco dining table to seat 16 is placed amidships. The sun-drenched aft section has a casual lounge consisting of two sofas and loose chairs around a drinks table, and two broad sunbeds are placed along the stern.

The interiors from Studio Vafiadis use a pale colour scheme and a variety of textures using natural materials to create a beach club-like feel that emphasises the abundance of natural light.

On the lower deck the crew accommodation, mess, galley and facilities are placed forward with the tender garage and water toys storage amidships and the engine room behind. The beach club to the aft comes furnished with a central lounging space, around which there is a massage room, sauna, steam room, a changing room and a bathroom.

The main deck features a sizeable VIP stateroom forward followed by several other of the the guest cabins. The amidships area contains the galley and main foyer, both of which lead into the open-plan main salon to the aft. Here, an elongated table to seat 16 is placed forward and guests can savour a meal together in brightly lit surroundings filled with artwork. The main salon to the aft consists of three plush sofas surrounding a large coffee table and four armchairs around a drinks table.

The Master suite is placed forward on the upper deck and enjoys 180 degree views out across the bow. The rest of the guest accommodation is placed on this deck and consists of VIP and double staterooms as well as a study amidships to starboard. The lobby and crew spaces are behind the guest accommodation, and an atmospheric skylounge is placed in the aft. Desirable as a relaxing social space day or night, the skylounge has a bar in the forward port corner and a central lounge of two sofas and four armchairs around a square coffee table where guests can converse or watch a film together on the widescreen TV mounted on the forward wall. Both sides of the room have a pair of chairs and a drinks table beside the windows for quiet conversation while watching the world go by.

The bridge deck has a spacious wheelhouse with additional seating for guests to watch the action, and behind is the Captain's cabin to port and the ship office and emergency generator to starboard. A lobby amidships leads to the aft gym, which comes with a range of exercise equipment for guests to maintain their routines. Glass sliding doors open out onto the bridge deck aft for a more alfresco experience while granting direct access to the swimming pool and sunbeds.

Twin CAT 3516C-HD engines producing 2525 kW each produce a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots.

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 12 guests across 14 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 2 VIP staterooms, 6 double cabins, 4 twin cabins with a Pullman berth and 1 single cabin. ~ The Master suite is situated on the upper deck forward and contains a king-sized bed against the wall, a pop-up TV in the cabinetry at the end of the bed, a seating area to port and a daybed to starboard. The en-suite bathroom is to port behind the bedroom and contains two sinks, an enclosed toilet and bidet, a shower and a bathtub. A sizeable dressing room is placed to port, with a guest lobby that can also be used as an office. ~ Two double cabins are placed to port and a VIP cabin to starboard on the upper deck. The VIP stateroom comes furnished with a queen-sized bed, a pop-up TV, an armchair and side table beside the window, and a walk-though wardrobe that leads to the marble en-suite bathroom. The bathroom has two sinks, a toilet, bidet and a shower. ~ The double cabins both have double beds and a pop-up TV, large wardrobes and an e-suite bathroom with two sinks, a toilet, bidet and a shower. ~ On the main deck, there is a spacious forward VIP stateroom that could be considered a second Master suite. Within, there is a king-sized bed on the forward wall with a widescreen TV mounted on the wall opposite, a chaise-lounger beneath the port windows and to starboard a pair of armchairs with a drinks table in the middle. A walk-in wardrobe is placed forward to port while the starboard side contains a marble-finished en-suite bathroom within which are two sinks, a toilet, bidet, shower and a bathtub. The VIP lobby aft also has a study to starboard. ~ The main deck also hosts three double cabins, three twin cabins with Pullman berths and a salon convertible to a single cabin. The double cabins all have a double bed, widescreen TV, a seating area, a wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom fitted with a toilet, bidet, sink and shower. The twin cabins have twin beds and a widescreen TV, a large wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom which has a toilet, bidet, sink and shower. The salon/single cabin contains a desk and chair, a sofa, armchair and coffee table with an en-suite bathroom providing a toilet, bidet, sink and shower. ~ The professional crew of 28 will provide guests with an exceptional experience throughout their time on board.

A truly unique luxury superyacht abounding in impressive and innovative features, 311ft (95m) O’PARI is a brand new vessel from Golden Yachts, and is available for charter for up to 12 guests in the Mediterranean, from Corsica, Croatia and the French Riviera to the Greek Islands, Sardinia and Turkey.

Over five levels, O’PARI is a lavish, floating palace that offers guests the pinnacle of charter experiences that can be completely tailored to your every whim.

On deck, there are several spaces dedicated to leisure and relaxation, including the magnificent sundeck that boasts an inviting jacuzzi with large sunpads, undercover bar and dining table, DJ booth and dance floor and vast lounge area.

The bridge deck features the second pool/jacuzzi surrounded by sunpads. Inside, there is a fully-equipped gym with an impressive selection of machines and weights, as well as the Captain’s cabin and wheelhouse helm.

The aft upper deck is the ideal place for meals alfresco, casual dining and entertaining, and enjoying the views from the lounge and banquette seating. On the foredeck is the touch-and-go helipad for arriving with discretion and taking off to explore the coastline.

There is yet another social space on the Main deck which would be perfect for pre-dinner aperitifs ahead of moving into the main saloon for forming dining. On the lower deck is the extensive ‘beach house’ for making the most of your time close to the watersedge, with extended swim platform, sun lounges, umbrellas and garage housing all O’PARI’S watertoys and tenders.

A lift services each level, there is wi-fi and air-conditioning throughout the vessel and O’PARI is wheelchair accessible.

A certified “green yacht”, O’PARI is equipped with DPF systems to reduce pollutants and other hazardous substances in the air and water.

Decorated in a sophisticated palette of neutrals, O’PARI’S décor is 5-star elegance, with quality custom furnishing, exotic marble and various timbers, plus high-tech LED lighting and floor to ceiling windows for panoramic views.

Adjacent to the Beach House on the lower deck, is the dedicated massage room, with warm Turkish hammam and dry Finnish sauna, guaranteed to pamper and relax guests after days enjoying the sunshine and island hopping.

The upper saloon and main saloon are tranquil lounges for relaxation, socialising and enjoying the state of the art AV entertainment system, including audio distribution system with independent Airplay, Bluetooth, Internet radio, Spotify, tune in radio, Pandora, Sirus Xm, Deezer, Napster in each area of the yacht; wired and wireless CRESTRON touch screens for music and TV control, or guests can connect their own iPhone/iPad/Android device.

O’PARI has a phenomenal 21 TVs installed throughout the yacht each with independent movie players, satellite receiver, media player, Apple TV, blue ray players, local TV channels and local inputs for gaming consoles and video cameras.

There is a fantastic outdoor cinema on the sun deck and the movie server is equipped with 450+ movies. Guests have individual control of all lights, climate, blinds and shades from analog classic switches, mounted touch panels or wireless touch screens with Smart Graphics user interface for easier control.

The main saloon is adjacent to a formal dining room for up to 14 guests, complete with custom-crafted glass table and contemporary chandelier.

ACCOMMODATION

O’PARI comprises a total of 14 luxurious cabins: On the upper deck are the owner’s suite, VIP suite and two Double cabins. On the main deck is one VIP suite, one salon/double cabin, three double cabins, three twin cabins with a Pullman berth in each, then on the lower deck are the twin/staff cabin with a Pullman berth, and one single/hospital cabin. All guest cabins have private ensuites and the impeccable styling with original artworks and custom-designed furnishings.

The lavish owner’s suite on the upper deck that is a private haven, with wraparound windows, walk-in robes, dressing room, lounge area, office, expansive ensuite with bath and shower, and his ‘n hers basins.

The VIP suite on the main deck is just as sumptuous, comprising full-beam cabin, large ensuite with bath and shower, and walk-in robe and dressing room.

Luxury charter yacht O’PARI has been kitted out with the latest equipment for guests’ total delight, whether you prefer just to dip a toe in or flat-out, high-octane fun.

There is a sleek, 9.75m Onda limousine tender, a Chris Craft Launch 27, 6.2m Cobra Patronus RIB tender, 4.4m Avon Seasport deluxe for island hopping, arriving to shore in style, and skiing or towing inflatables.

The particularly spectacular staircase from Lower deck to the bridge deck with the 3D custom made piece of art of full metal effect emphasizes the light to the main central entrance. The owner’s suite is located on the upper deck with totally different decorative schemes. The suite gives a sense of panoramic sea view, with the king-size bed, a walking closet and a luxury jacuzzi.

The Captain

The Greek Captain Alexandros Skaris has been in the charter business for almost 20 years, with many of his guests being repeat visitors to his yachts. Showing off an elegant interior flooded with natural light, the first photos inside 94m (312’) superyacht O’PARI , illustrate just why she has been described as the epitome of modern luxury.

O’PARI is Greek shipyard Golden Yachts flagship yacht, as well as being the largest yacht it has ever built. There has been a buzz of anticipation to see inside the eco-conscious motor yacht since her delivery in July and these exclusive images certainly don’t disappoint.

With vast outdoor living spaces, a beach club wellness center, a sauna and steam room, and a bridge deck swimming pool and sundeck based Jacuzzi, O’PARI is certain to be one of the most impressive yachts for charter over the winter months.

The lightly upholstered decor, married with dark wood accents, is combined with full-length windows to let in swathes of light and allow for a permanent ocean backdrop.

A large open-plan main salon to the aft of the main deck offers an uncluttered area for socialising and catching up with friends and family. It features an elongated table to seat 16 and three comfortable sofas nearby surround a large coffee table, with a further four armchairs surrounding a drinks table.

On the upper deck, gorgeous panoramic views and warm sea breezes are the order of the day with the area being home to a vast skylounge, complete with bar and full entertainment system. It opens onto a vast aft terrace with an outdoor dining area for 16 for al-fresco dining whilst the sun sets. From here walkways also take you to O’PARI’s touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck.

Across the upper and main decks are 12 sumptuous staterooms that can accommodate up to 22 guests. The piece de resistance being a magnificent full-beam master suite, accessed from a private lobby area and offering 180 degree views out across the bow.

This palatial space is finished in a calming soft-cream color palette and has its own private sitting area, a huge walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite befitting the grandiose stature of O’PARI with a huge bath and shower.

Guest accommodation includes two VIP staterooms, six double cabins and three twin cabins, each of which has an additional Pullman berth. All cabins are finished in light natural shades and equipped with entertainment systems and en-suites.

Exterior styling also comes from Studio Vafiadis, with a streamlined hull and superstructure giving a sleek and elegant look, and a hint of what is to come when you step inside.

Guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where to take in the sights on offer when on a luxury yacht charter with O’PARI. A large Jacuzzi pool is surrounded by oversized sunpads on the bridge deck aft, or head up to the sundeck and slip into the raised spa pool, right next to the outdoor lounge and dining area and full wet bar.

At sea level O’PARI’s beach club opens up onto a huge bathing platform, with plenty of room for sunbathing or making the most of her extensive collection of water toys.

A wellness centre with spa massage facilities and a sauna and steam room, perfect for relaxing after a work-out in the state-of-the-art gym on the bridge deck, complete the impressive beach club.

Alex holds a Captain Class A’ Diploma from the Merchant Marine Academy of Aspropyrgos and certificates in Lifesaving Equipment and Drills, First-Aid, Fire-Fighting & Prevention as well as a Dive Master certificate. He commenced a career in 2002 following his passion for the sea and served on cruise ships, but his love for yachts brought him to the yachting industry a year later. Alex has since served on motor yachts both as a Chief Officer and as a Captain with top references and 80% repeat clientele. He is really talented and has expert knowledge of the Greek Sea. What excites him the most about being a captain on a charter yacht is that he is given the chance to share unique experiences.

Styled by Studio Vafiadis, O’PARI’s beautiful interior is both inspiring and spacious. Featuring a contemporary and elegant design, luxury goes hand-in-hand with style and comfort throughout all the guest areas. She is finished to the highest standard, utilizing a natural color palette filled with shades of earthy tones. Daylight floods through the floor to ceiling windows, bringing the outside in and increasing the sense of space throughout her guest areas. Her main salon is the heart of the yacht. Open-plan and set up for socializing, it features a formal dining area forward and comfortable lounge area to the aft. Alternatively, her excellently equipped sky lounge has a bar and lounging area where guests can enjoy an aperitif following a sumptuous dinner on the adjacent upper deck terrace.  

O’PARI’s spacious deck areas have been designed for outdoor living at its best. Guests can start the day enjoying the yachts large inventory of water toys, with easy access from the sea-level beach club that opens out onto a large bathing platform. Following a morning of activities, the main deck aft provides a welcome retreat with a partially shaded aft deck with lounge area. A further lounge and dining area are located on the upper deck aft, while forward the helipad can be used for various activities including outdoor gym sessions. The bridge deck, with its large Jacuzzi pool and oversized sun pads, offers ample opportunity for relaxation, as does the sundeck with its raised spa pool and dining area with full wet bar. Wherever guests choose to roam, there are plentiful spaces for socializing and relaxing. 

O’PARI accommodates 12 guests in 12 staterooms spread across her upper and main deck areas. Located on the upper deck, the full-beam master stateroom features a private lounge area and stunningly designed master cabin. Two VIP staterooms, six double cabins and three twin cabins, accommodate the remaining 10 guests. She also has a staff cabin and hospital cabin on the lower deck, along with accommodation for 28 crewmembers. 

Powered by twin Caterpillar 3516C-HD engines, O’PARI has a cruising speed of 16 knots and is capable of maximum speeds of up to 18 knots. She offers a sustainable cruising experience thanks to the use of the latest engineering systems.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Get to know more about the iconic wave that has been chosen as the surfing competition venue for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Iconic, heavy, and extreme. As far as surfing waves go, Teahupo'o is as spectacular as you can get.

Teahupoʻo is a village on the southwestern coast of Tahiti , an Island in French Polynesia, located in the South Pacific Ocean.

The wave, pronounced 'Chopoo' and with the nickname 'Chopes' is approximately 400 metres offshore and known as the most famous reef break in the world. It's reputation precedes it with the glassy, mesmerizing tube.

But it's not a wave for the faint-hearted.

Between April and October each year, the worlds best surfers monitor the swell maps and forecast to try predict when the dreamy, left-hand barrel will be at it's best.

The wave is often two to three metres high and can sometimes even reach seven metres. But it's not the height of the wave that makes it unique, it's the combination of big barrels, heavy drops the riders need to make to get inside the wave, and the very shallow reef below. This wave is the ultimate test of a surfers commitment and barrel-riding ability.

With Tahiti set to host the Paris 2024 Olympic surfing competition, fans can expect a mesmerizing and thrilling spectacle.

Surfing Tahiti 

The teahupo’o wave explained.

For many, the Teahupo’o wave is a natural wonder of the world.

Along with the crystal clear tropical water, the barrel is hollow, meaning the tube cylinder is very open. This makes for stunning images and incredible surfing, but makes for a tricky beast to tame as the big and powerful wave lands on a shallow reef.

In many parts there is only 50 centimetres between the reef and the surface of the water.

The heavy and thick liquid gem is created because of a change in depth on the sea floor.

Approximately 50 metres beyond the shallow reef, the sea drops to more than 50 feet (15 metres). This means swells coming towards the shore change from very deep water to extremely shallow waters over a short distance and space of time. This is why the waves rise up over the reef before crashing down with an immense amount of force and power.

With so much water surging, the wave has a very thick lip. This is the section of the wave that you see when the wave begins to curl over. Lots of water means a heavier and weightier wave which can make it difficult to get inside the wave. With such a shallow reef below, a large amount of bravery, fear and risk is required for every ride.

Barrel riding (also known as tube riding) is arguably the holy grail of surfing. It involves a surfer getting inside the most critical part of the wave and riding through the tube, with the goal of being spit out the other side. This glassy image of a circular blue ocean wall is what comes to mind when most surfers think of Teahupo’o.

Who does the wave suit?

Because Teahupo'o is a left-hand break, the wave peels to the surfers left.

This means when a surfer is paddling to catch the wave, they must turn to the left to ride along the wave. It also means goofy footers are better suited here because usually they prefer to go left.

A goofy footer is a surfer to doesn't have a regular stance and plants their right foot forward, left foot back.

So when we think about Paris 2024, we know this wave is well suited to goofy footers like Olympic Champion Italo Ferreira , three-time world champion Gabriel Medina , and fellow Olympians, USA's Caroline Marks , and Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb.

It would be remiss to not mention surfing legend, 11-time world champion Kelly Slater.

The 50-year-old is one of very few who is considered to have tamed the monstrous Teahupo'o wave on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. American Slater is the only person to score three perfect 20 heats, in 2005, 2013, and 2016.
