Looking at the yacht market report for 2022 and beyond, the industry’s future will be home to an entirely different landscape. The global pandemic has resulted in a shift in attitudes, a host of new travel trends and a spotlight on sustainability like never before. When it comes to yachting, the industry is listening. 

Yacht Market Report : the Only Way is Up

The yacht market weathered the uncertainty of the past two years and has come out stronger than ever before. This year has broken all records for yacht sales, with 545 yachts sold in the first three quarters of 2022, according to global superyacht brokerage Fraser. That’s compared to 277 yachts sold for the same period last year and is double the average number of yacht sales at this time of year since 2009. 

Interest in yacht charters has also risen from first-time charterers, and we can expect to see the results of the exponential growth in green engineering and technology in the next few years. 

Technological innovation is also set to enhance the luxury experience on board, with onboard technology becoming smarter, more sophisticated, and increasingly more implementable. 

When it comes to the superyacht experience, various trends all centre around people wanting to travel more, spend quality time with the people they love and explore remote destinations with health and safety at the front of their minds. 

It wasn’t just global lockdowns that have stimulated these yacht market trends. Global wealth grew significantly in 2020 and 2021, and according to the SYT iQ 2021 Market Report, new yacht sales also saw substantial growth worldwide. According to Wealth-X, a total of 670 additional billionaires were created in 2020 – a rise of 13%. The worldwide list of High Net Worth Individuals (defined as individuals with more than $5 million net assets) now has over 3 million members.

Yacht Charter: 2022 Trends

When it came to the charter market, top superyacht brokerage houses noted a substantial increase in first-time yacht charter clients in 2020 and 2021. In fact, new charter clients made up around 40% of the luxury charter market this year. 

Speaking at the Fraser conference at the Monaco Yacht Show 2021, Mark Duncan, Fraser Director of Marketing & Business Development, hopes that this demand will continue for the foreseeable future. 

“Judging by the feedback, especially from those first-time charterers this year, the experience they all enjoyed together seems to have really resonated with them,” Duncan said. “Some of those charterers booked, not for one week or 10-day charters, but three weeks and, on a few occasions, more than a month – they homeschooled on board, they worked on board. They re-positioned lives to being at sea and onboard and loved it. So long may it last.” 

The reasons behind these shifts over the past couple of years are clear. The yacht ownership and charter landscape changed in 2020 and 2021, largely due to the global pandemic. 

With the worldwide population facing restrictions on movement unprecedented in modern times, several trends in yachting emerged – the majority of which experts agree will continue into 2022 and beyond. 

When it comes to cruising behaviour, the world’s top yacht brokers and superyacht charter experts note a rise in multi-generational travel, with a surge of clients looking to spend increased quality time with loved ones. 

Charter Destination Trends

In tandem with a heightened priority for family-centred and increasingly extended periods at sea, more and more yacht clients are seeking pristine natural environments to spend their time, with a rise in interest in off-the-beaten-track destinations away from the busy superyacht hotspots. 

Again, the reasons behind this yacht market trend are obvious. As the weeks and then the months went by bunkered down in the same location, the advantages of a superyacht became crystal clear. A superyacht offers an isolated environment, a safe place to spend extended periods with family and friends while also allowing a sense of total freedom. 

Of course, a luxury yacht has long been the epitome of freedom, but with people stuck to one location like never before, it became more of a serious option for many in the game for a superyacht experience. With the COVID-19 pandemic still very much a global issue, it is a safe bet that the superyacht charter market will continue to grow and attract new clients. 

Sustainability: The Future is Green

Sustainability has been a hot topic for the past few years, though it’s clear that the need for sustainable solutions in superyachting is growing. 

Environmental awareness spans every level of the superyacht experience, from owner and charter client to shipyard and broker. In response to this growing necessity, the yachting industry is responding. 

Some of the most sustainable yachts in the past 10 years include Feadship’s 83-metre M/Y SAVANNAH. Delivered in 2015, M/Y SAVANNAH boasted 30% lower fuel consumption than her competitors and featured Feadship’s innovative Breathe propulsion system. Delivered in the same year was the 76.6-metre M/Y Yersin built by French shipyard Piriou. YERSIN is one of the world’s cleanest vessels, with her long list of sustainable features including emission-reducing filters on her engines to eradicate 99.8% of NOx and SOx emissions. Three years later, the 106-metre sailing yacht BLACK PEARL became the world’s first ‘zero impact’ yacht upon delivery from Oceanco in 2018, while in 2020, Nobiskrug’s 80-metre M/Y ARTEFACT features solar panels, diesel-electric propulsion system with lithium batteries, which reduces emissions by up to 30%.

And sustainable solutions are only becoming more prevalent in the future. Looking to the yacht market in 2022 and beyond, Dutch shipyard Oceanco recently commented that of the five 100+ metre superyachts currently under construction, all include trailblazing sustainable solutions, from alternative propulsion solutions and fuel sources to increased electrification and battery usage for reduced carbon emissions. 

Fellow Dutch superyacht shipyard Feadship has noted similar sentiments, while Amels revealed that their latest superyacht under construction – the 120-metre Project Signature designed by Espen Oeino – will be one of the greenest and most ecological vessels out there upon delivery in 2025. 

Sustainable Technology Across the Board

But sustainable futures are not just reserved for the large yacht builders. When it comes to the implementation of even newer sustainable superyacht technology, smaller brands like Hynova in France are also paving the way. 

With the first models set to hit the water in the near future, Hynova aims to launch the very first brand of boats featuring electro-hydrogen propulsion. Sunreef Yachts, the renowned luxury catamaran builder, unveiled the 100 Eco Catamaran in summer 2021, while the Italian yacht builder Fabiani Yachts revealed their new hybrid yacht range at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021. 

The new Fabiana Yachts Hybrid models range from 21 to 30-metres and feature solar panels intelligently integrated into the structure of the boat – the latter a feature seen in more yacht designs and future concepts. From 80+ metre superyachts to 21-metre day boats and everything in between, it’s clear that when it comes to the future of the industry, the yacht market is on the path to going green.

This is because most of the manufacturers start offering discounts around September and October. When demand begins to decline, dealers often provide all kinds of attractive incentives.

You can often find some of the best prices for both new and used models by searching for a boat during the fall. If you buy a boat in the fall, you can use the entire off-season to install equipment and accessories. You can also ensure that there is plenty of time to get the boat ready before starting the next boating season . 

This quieter period might mean getting a good deal on your boat. In many parts of the country, this is the slowest-selling season for dealerships, and they are actively trying to move their current year models off the showroom floor. This creates a buyer’s market where prices can sometimes be discounted a bit, and you may even be able to negotiate certain extra perks like winter storage or including a fall slip with the deal. 

The winter might seem like an odd time to buy a boat, but many people feel that this is the absolute best time because of the many boat shows held across the country. Boat shows bring together a wide selection of the most popular manufactures from all across the world, allowing you to explore various models across all ranges of price, size, and style. Exhibitors show off their new models and display all of the latest features. You can look at a big selection of boats from different companies without having to travel from one location to another. 

If getting the lowest price possible is a priority, schedule your boat buying purchase to match these kinds of dealer and manufacturer incentives. This usually means shopping in the fall and early winter, when dealerships are trying to clear the decks of current inventory to make way for the new model year boats. 

Sometimes this period overlaps with the boat show season, so you may look at buying a boat from a show. One downside to shopping for incentives is that you may have to be satisfied with what a dealer has in stock, rather than having the flexibility to order a model equipped with exactly the features you need. 

The boat show season usually starts around January and lasts through March, and you can often find incredible deals at these events. Even some of the dealers from warmer climates will be trying to sell their year-end inventory, so there is usually a chance for a great deal even if there is no off-season for boating in your area. 

Some companies look at their business monthly, and more deals tend to be closed near the end of the month, but you can sometimes get a good deal early in the month, too. Although prices can be lower toward the end of the month if you are not exactly sure what type of boat you want, avoiding the last week of the month may be a good idea. It might be better to visit the dealership during a quieter period when you might receive more thought and personal attention.

New Models

If you are looking for one of the hottest new models on the market, early spring may be the best time for you to consider buying a boat. Many manufacturers announce their new model-year offerings in late summer, and then they introduce them to the public at the winter boat shows. 

This means that the new model year really begins each summer , and boats for sale in the spring may sell for lower prices as the new boats start coming in. If you wait until late June or July to buy an older model, just be aware that boats can sell out quickly so you might miss out on the exact boat you had in mind. 

Used Models 

When you are looking for a used boat, keep in mind that there is often a scarcity of boats for sale during high-demand times. Recent developments have meant that the demand for boats is very high, so it might be a real challenge to find the type of boat you have been looking for. This is not necessarily the case with unusual older boats like trawlers or custom racing sailboats. 

If you are willing to fix up or repower an older boat, there may be plenty of options available at entry-level prices. But buying an older or project boat depends on you having enough patience to complete the work and turn the boat into something you can use. You should be sure to buy the boat soon enough to finish your project work and be on the water when the weather is right. 

Seasonal Versus Year-round Markets

In seasonal boating areas, spring and early summer are typically the high seasons for boat sales, but that does not always mean these are the best times to buy. If you are buying a new boat in the fall, dealers will sometimes cover winter storage costs. As soon as spring starts, you can launch your boat and enjoy some of the first good boating weekends of the season. This same situation applies to whether you are buying a new boat or a used one. 

Another thing to consider if you live in a place like Florida is the transient population. The market for boats in these areas tends to improve in the late fall and winter when the snowbirds fly south to escape winter. Many of the average boaters from Vermont or Michigan seem to think the boating season is just getting underway when they arrive in November, so the dealer and broker offices tend to stay busy. However, when spring comes, some of those same boaters might decide to sell their boats rather than store them for the next six months. As a result, you can sometimes find great deals in April, especially if you are buying a lightly used boat . 

Try to Keep Calm During the Process

As is the case with all major purchases, most boat-buying decisions can be emotional, so if you rush into things too much, the reasoning part of your brain may get ignored. You need some emotional desire, or you may never end up buying a boat at all, but always give yourself a little time to put your emotions in greater balance. 

First, do some research into the type of boat you might want, spend some time meeting with several potential sellers to learn more about the specific pricing options available. Then you can go about negotiating the final purchase when you believe the time is right. 

Although good new and used boats might sometimes be a little hard to find, your planning will give you the confidence to sign on the dotted line as soon as the right boat shows up. The anticipation of owning the boat and spending time on the water with your family can be an exciting part of the process. A good idea is to plan a big boat party for the day you take delivery so that you can celebrate your purchase in style.

The biggest transformation of boatbuilding in our lifetime is under way, with the drive to eliminate carbon emissions and use composites that can be recycled into a new boat. Rupert Holmes visits those yards spearheading the change

Imagine a future where you could buy a standard production yacht which is built not from virgin fibres, toxic resin, and fitted with teak or plastic decks, nor propelled by a noisy engine fuelled by noxious heavy oil, but instead one crafted from natural products, which runs silently, emission-free and with very little carbon footprint. And where, at the end of the yacht’s life, you could trade it back in with the builders so they could separate the fibres from the resin and recycle it into a new boat.

That future is here and now in 2023. Thanks to years of research and development from some of the largest yards, your yacht of tomorrow is already available today – you maybe just didn’t realise it.

Whether crossing the Atlantic , or enjoying a sunny afternoon in local waters, the sense that sailing is an activity that takes us closer to nature is a strong one. Yet the vessels that provide this experience are the product of a sizeable polluting industry. Fortunately that situation is now changing quickly and two of the world’s largest boatbuilders are already making big steps towards producing more sustainable yachts.

At the same time, some of these changes will make yachts cleaner and quieter, with the potential for longer periods of autonomy when cruising long distances. A step-change was already in evidence at last year’s International Multihull Show, where a number of new catamarans sported solar arrays with outputs of several kilowatts – enough to feed almost all the hotel loads of these power-hungry vessels (enough to run a modest house in fact), with the exception of air conditioning and hot water.

However, this is just a first – and easily achieved – step in a rapidly evolving transformation. During that edition of the show Fountaine-Pajot announced its Odysséa24 strategic plan, which the firm has deployed for all its brands to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The first stage was informed by an independent study that shows the overwhelming majority – 80% – of the yard’s carbon emissions stem not from manufacturing processes, but from the use of its yachts during the first 20 years of their life.

Just a few months later Groupe Beneteau announced its own plan to move to building its entire range from new more sustainable materials by 2030. This includes resins that can be recycled into a new yacht, achieving the holy grail of a circular economy. Electric propulsion – with range extending generators where appropriate – will also increasingly be offered as an option.

These are grand plans and the marine industry has a long history of grandiose ideas that are quickly sidelined or evolve only painstakingly slowly.

However, despite their huge sizes (annual turnover of €1.5 billion for Groupe Beneteau and €230 million for Fountaine-Pajot) these are still family-owned companies with a passion for change that comes right from the top and planning horizons that are far longer than those of some publicly listed or private equity-owned firms.

From talk to action

At the International Multihull Show, Claire Fountaine, president of the Fountaine Pajot and Dufour group, told us it was time for action: “In order for future generations to sail while preserving the planet, we have the ambition of becoming the leader of the ecological transition in our industry. This is the aim of our Odysséa24 plan.”

Scroll forward 12 months and we’re already seeing the fruits of this mission leaving the La Rochelle yard – more on that later. Equally, Groupe Beneteau already has yachts in series production using a modified version of Arkema’s Elium thermoplastic resin that can be recovered at the end of a yacht’s life and used to build another vessel.

Its Cheviré factory, opposite one of Airbus’s Nantes facilities and a stone’s throw from the river Loire, has an illustrious history. It was originally Jeanneau’s Advanced Technologies division, where the top three finishers in the 1990 Route du Rhum , including Florence Arthaud’s Pierre 1er and Philippe Poupon’s Fleury Michon, were built. More recently, the new Figaro 3 fleet was produced here.

Beneteau Oceanis 30

Today, Beneteau describes it as a laboratory for developing sustainable boatbuilding solutions. But in reality it’s more than that – a production boatbuilding plant capable of churning out 50-plus boats a year, while simultaneously running several side projects.

When I visited in May, three Mini 650s built using 6% flax fibre were in production. They’d also just popped the first Elium-built Sun Fast 30 out of the mould and were preparing to infuse the second. This boat is the outcome of a design competition organised by RORC, the UNCL in France and Storm Trysail Club in the USA. It was won by a collaboration between naval architects VPLP and advanced composites specialist Multiplast. So how did Jeanneau end up building the boat?

“We already had a partnership with Multiplast, who built the foils for the Figaro 3,” says Groupe Beneteau sailboat product director Damien Jacob. “They usually only do one-off projects, but we had an existing relationship that fitted this boat perfectly.”

However, the original concept for the boat envisaged using conventional resins, so VPLP had to revisit the structural engineering to integrate Elium into the design. A key advantage of this material for boatbuilding is that it has very similar mechanical properties to conventional polyester resins. Nevertheless, it was important to validate the figures – a process that’s central to Beneteau’s vision for the changes it plans to implement across the board over the next few years. Instead of the risk of a sudden wholesale change, the yard is taking many small steps and learning from each one.

The building of one of the two Beneteau First 44 prototypes – a boat that also has twin electric motors, plus a diesel range extender generator – last year marked the first stage of the Elium project. The idea was it would enable a better understanding of the material, right down to the details of how to drill it efficiently, glue it and so on, to enable it to be integrated seamlessly into a production line.

Recyclable production yacht

Beneteau has a long-standing group of production experts with huge experience working with different materials, laminating techniques and problem solving. “These are really talented people who built the First 44e, and are already able to teach others how to use Elium,” says Groupe Beneteau research and innovation director Erwan Faoucher, who is also president of APER, the national boat dismantling scheme in France.

Unlike conventional resins, whether epoxy or polyester, Elium is a three-part resin system in which all the elements must be combined in precise quantities. Developed by Arkema, a multinational manufacturer of specialty materials headquartered near Paris, it’s the world’s first liquid thermoplastic resin that will cure at room temperature.

These properties make it feasible for use in boatbuilding, yet, as it’s a thermoplastic, at the end of a boat’s life it can be melted and recovered for use in a new boat, with the alcohol content providing much of the fuel needed to power the process. That’s hugely different to conventional polyester and epoxy resins, which are a thermoset type in which cross-bonding of the polymers makes it impossible to melt and recover for reuse.

Groupe Beneteau has an exclusive five year license on a formulation developed in a three-year collaboration with Arkema to optimise a version of the resin for production boatbuilding.

The three elements are automatically mixed by machine, ready for infusion, making it relatively simple to integrate into the production line. Equally, cure times are comparable to conventional polyester resins, so production schedules don’t need major adaptation.

A Flax 27 in build

These factors, along with its similar mechanical properties, make its use a relatively easy transition from polyester. However there is a 15% cost penalty on the price of a new boat, one that is expected to reduce to 10% as volumes increase (we understand Groupe Beneteau want to make these materials standard rather than a costly option). Also, the optimum method of how to separate the resin from the fibre at end of life, be it through using heat or solvents, is still being researched.

In addition to being a circular economy material – one that can be recovered when a boat is scrapped and then used to build another yacht – the Elium used by Beneteau already includes 18% recycled methacrylate – a core ingredient – and therefore has a carbon footprint around 15% lower than conventional polyester resins. Looking ahead, once fully recycled Elium can be used, carbon emissions are expected to be two or three times lower than polyester, a figure Faoucher says “will be very hard for any other material to beat.” It’s worth noting that epoxies tend to have a carbon footprint two or three times larger than that of conventional polyester resin.

Nevertheless, Beneteau is not betting its future solely on Elium. The small fibreglass parts such as locker lids, bathing platforms and so on for its nine brands are made in a single facility that produces a colossal 30,000 items a year. These now all include some flax fibres and are currently made using polyester resin with around 15% bio resin content.

This figure represents the amount of alcohol in conventional polyester resin and was therefore a fairly easy substitution as a first step. The next stage is to replace other components to reach 34% bio content. Faoucher says the maximum figure technically achievable is 40% as the styrene that makes up a large proportion of polyester resin can’t be replaced with bio sourced materials.

Flax fibres used by Greenboat

He also points out that determining the optimal amount of flax fibre to use is not as simple as it might appear, hence the 6% flax content in the Mini 650s. The problem, he says, is that natural fibres absorb more resin than artificial ones, which results in a heavier boat that may consume more CO2 for propulsion and so on over its lifespan.

Recyclable Dufour

Following Fountaine Pajot’s extensive development of electric and hydrogen power, the Dufour side of the group is turning to materials development. The project, dubbed ‘Licorne’ (unicorn) is due to be unveiled later this year. The plan is to use recycled materials to build a Dufour 41 prototype, fast-track sail it for around three years, before disassembling it to build another yacht and so prove its circular concept.

Deputy CEO Romain Motteau is enthused by the project, and says the unique element is the Arkema resin they want to use is already formed of recycled material. His vision is to build a fleet of boats which are rented from Dufour and, at the end of their lifetime, come back to be recycled into new boats, rather than the current model of building hundreds of yachts a year and selling them to new owners: ‘that is the future’.

Ongoing R&D

Groupe Beneteau and FP/Dufour are not the only outfits seeking to create sustainable boat production and there are many smaller scale operators who have quietly been churning out low carbon or recyclable yachts in timber epoxy or aluminium for many years – but these solutions can’t yet be scaled up to industrial proportions.

Nevertheless one notable young company is focussed on developing new boatbuilding methods that can be scaled – Germany’s Greenboats. Founders Friedrich Deimann and Paul Schirmer gained much attention with the exquisite Flax 27 daysailer, which is a fantastic showcase of what can be achieved with natural fibres and bio-sourced resins.

This was not initially intended as a series production vessel, but from the outset the founders’ vision extended much further. The company has put significant energy into developing sustainable boatbuilding materials, including consulting for more established yards, and has firmly been at the forefront of this revolution.

Examples include work with 11th Hour Racing to produce parts such as hatches for its IMOCA 60 Malama that have the same strength, structural characteristics and weight as the previous carbon hatches that were more or less a standard IMOCA item.

It has taken more than a decade, plus a lot of research and experimentation, for Greenboats to reach this level of expertise.

“Most production with flax fibres today is quite crude and they don’t play to the magic of the composite,” Deimann explains.

With detailed structural engineering, even for small parts, plus optimal fibre orientation and location, it’s possible to achieve the same weight, and in some cases less, than using conventional materials. Their latest project, for instance, a 30ft short-handed racer/cruiser built for Matthias Bröker, a naval architect at Judel/Vrolijk who worked on the Dehler 30 , will be lighter than the Dehler.

What happens at the end of life for the boats they build? “There are two possible approaches,” says Deimann. “You can use low-impact, low carbon biological based materials like flax and bio resins, or recyclable resin systems.” Greenboats has tried both and at the moment believes the former is currently the best option, especially as the infrastructure that would be needed for recycling is a long way off.

Instead they have successfully trialled making granules from a laminate made using natural materials. These were then used to help power the furnace of a steel making plant in a way that’s not possible with conventional materials.

The power struggle

Given Fountaine Pajot’s realisation that the overwhelming bulk of carbon emissions occur not in manufacture, but when the boat is in use (especially under engine power), the materials used for building boats are by no means the only changes the industry needs to make.

Electric propulsion has been established as the default for new daysailer designs for most of the last decade and is now rapidly making inroads in the market for larger craft. Many of these will initially also be fitted with ultra-efficient diesel range extender generators, though the hope among many is that green hydrogen will become available sufficiently widely to replace the generator with a hydrogen fuel cell in the not too distant future.

Fountaine Pajot has already launched a prototype version of its Samana 59 that’s entirely powered by non-fossil fuels, including a 6kW solar array and a powerful 70kW REXH2 hydrogen powered fuel cell. This boat was developed in conjunction with EODev, an industrial extension of the Energy Observer project – a 90ft racing catamaran that enjoyed an illustrious career before being converted to run on hydrogen power and has since completed 50,000 hours of use.

In France enthusiasm for hydrogen power is growing rapidly, including a massive 34 hectare hydrogen farm in development at St Nazaire at the mouth of the Loire, rapidly growing numbers of hydrogen fuelling stations for public transport (the two largest towns in the Vendée – La Roche sur Yon and Les Sables d’Olonne – for instance both have them) and double the number for private cars as the UK.

Nevertheless, Fountaine-Pajot remains cautious about the realities of how quickly this technology can be rolled out in the marine industry. It’s not about the intrinsic reliability of the system, as Phil Sharp, another hydrogen advocate who’s also based in La Rochelle, is seeking to demonstrate in the next Vendée Globe race . The problem for long-distance cruising yachts is one of availability within a sensible time frame: “European funding is needed to make it happen,” according to communications director Hélène de Fontainieu.

Instead, Fountaine Pajot’s immediate focus is on what it calls Smart Electric – electric propulsion backed up by a diesel generator, plus efficient regeneration from the electric motors while sailing, large solar arrays and wind power. An intelligent onboard energy management system is also a key element and ensures optimal use of power and charging.

“Many boats have two or three internal combustion motors,” deputy CEO and Smart Electric/hydrogen project manager Matthieu Fountaine told me. “In a well engineered system if they are replaced with electric propulsion motors, plus a diesel generator, we can reduce the fuel needed for propulsion by 15-20%.”

Smart Electric is available for all FP brands, including Dufour monohulls. Several examples are already afloat and a further 50 are scheduled for build next year.

Early buyers have come from across the globe and are often people who see themselves as pioneers. Yet this concept has potential to become mainstream very quickly – last year hybrid and fully electric cars accounted for almost 50% of the UK market, so many boat buyers have already experienced electric propulsion.

Pioneering work by yards such as Arcona, Salona and Outremer, as well as cruisers such as YouTubers Dan Deckert and Kika Mevs ( @SailingUma ), who took their electric powered 50-year-old Pearson 36 to Svalbard and Iceland last summer, has also helped to showcase what’s possible and refine the new products that are needed.

The charter market is also important to Fountaine Pajot, so how well has the concept been received in the more hard-headed business world? Two large operators – Tradewinds and Dream Yacht Charter – have already embraced the Smart Electric concept, with the latter ordering 40 boats for delivery over the next two years.

Electric motor range

Using electric propulsion opens a door to a completely different way of thinking to the diesel engines we’re accustomed to using. However, a challenge for many boatbuilders is they have to convey very different messages for different types of boat. Many diesel powered yachts carry so much fuel that consumption is never a worry. However, the further you voyage the greater the chances that you’ll opt to throttle back to extend range.

It’s incredibly easy to underestimate the dramatic benefit this has on energy use. Wave making resistance increases exponentially above 1x the square root of the effective waterline length (in feet). Therefore it takes three times more energy to push a boat with a 36ft (10.9m) waterline at 8 knots than at 6 knots.

Further efficiencies can be gained by throttling back further. Most of the time only a small proportion of the potential power is being used, but more is on tap for manoeuvring and for punching head seas for short periods, such as leaving harbour or rounding choppy headlands.

Motorsailing with electric power is also very different to doing so with a diesel engine and is an absolute revelation. Unlike a diesel, electric motors can give just a small extra push – if this simultaneously helps increase apparent wind, the speed boost might be obtained using only 10% of the motor’s output, giving a silent motor sailing range hugely greater than a quick scan of system specifications might suggest.

Drop in the ocean?

Yet this is all a far cry from what visitors to the massive space devoted to motoryachts at this year’s Düsseldorf boat show will have seen. Among the many craft on display, a large number of fast, yet heavy, boats powered by colossal engines – including multiple units of recently developed 10-cylinder 350hp and 450hp outboard motors – showed not even the slightest nod towards addressing the impending climate crisis or over use of plastics.

Groupe Beneteau – larger than the next half dozen yards combined – clearly believes this old approach isn’t viable in the long term. It has firmly staked its future in a sustainable direction, to the point of selling its three-decade-old €300 million mobile home business to help fund the transition towards sustainable boatbuilding. Many others are surely set to follow them and Fountaine Pajot, along with the many smaller yards that did much of the early pioneering work in moving towards more sustainable practices.

Deimann cautions there is still a long way to go and is concerned the industry as a whole is still generally operating on an old linear economy model, not a circular one. That’s a change that requires a whole new way of thinking, but a change that – as of now – is at least under way.

America in the Yachting Calendar Year: The Must-See Boat Shows of the USA

With life slowly returning to a new normal, several boat shows across America are reopening their doors throughout 2022, set to present impressive displays to welcome back the crowds. Renowned for its strong yachting culture, which sees thousands of yachts in its waters each year, America has become a hot-spot for many yacht owners; enticed by the offerings from American shipyards as well as the adventurous yachting lifestyle that the USA presents. As one of the largest markets for superyacht sales, the USA’s leading boat shows are often attended by numerous renowned shipyards, designers, and brokers, providing desirable events for any prospective superyacht owner or yachting enthusiast.

Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show - 16th - 20th February

Last week welcomed the first boat show of the American yachting calendar. This year, the Miami International Boat Show (MIBS) and the Miami Yacht Show were united to become the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show (DBMIBS): creating one of the largest boat shows in the world. Attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, the event's organisers estimate the show to have generated a combined annual impact of $1.34 billion on South Florida’s economy. 

This year, several large superyachts were exhibited during the four-day show. Most notably, Damen Yachting showcased the 55m Amels 180, Gene Machine, and 55m Yacht Support YS 5009, Gene Chaser, for the first time as a complete fleet. Owned by accomplished DNA sequencing scientist Dr Jonathon Rothberg, the scientific duo was presented stern-to-stern at the exclusive location of the Island Gardens. Lurssen’s 61m Marguerite and Benettis’ 44.2m Il’ Barbetta were also on display, as well as Oceanfast’s 49.9m Thunder, who is currently listed for sale with IYC. With even more planned for 2023, DBMIBS is certainly one to keep in your calendar for next year, already planned to take place from 15th to 19th February 2023.

Palm Beach International Boat Show - 24th - 27th March 

2022 welcomes the 40th anniversary of the second Florida-based boat show, Palm Beach International Boat Show (PBIBS). According to the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, the 2019 PBIBS recorded over 53,000 attendees. With the 2020 show held virtually, and the 2021 show allowing only a limited number of guests, this year is set to be back, and better than ever. 

Showcasing more than $1.2 billion worth of yachts and accessories each year, PBIBS' Safe Harbour Rybovich is due to reveal yachts up to 100 metres in length. Not only a haven for superyacht enthusiasts and potential clients, the show additionally displays a range of sailing boats, fishing boats and lavish pleasure cruisers. With this year's exhibiting superyachts yet to be released, expect to be wowed when the time soon comes.

Newport International Boat Show - 15th - 18th September

Another of America's large boat shows is held on the East Coast in the New England state of Rhode Island. Newport International Boat Show (NIBS) welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, spanning over an impressive 13 acres of docks and marina. Debuting some of the newest sailboats and powerboats on the US market, NIBS is a must-visit for yachting enthusiasts. 

As a superyacht hotspot, Newport has become the Eastern hub for American yachting fans, with its range of marinas and harbours providing a wealth of yacht facilities and services, as well as extensive waterside entertainment. Nestled between New York and Boston, it is the perfect summer location for yachting, and the NIBS has undoubtedly grown year on year to reflect this. Yet to announce their yachting display line-up, Newport International Boat Show will be taking place from 15th to 18th September 2022.

Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 26th - 30th October 

Following record-breaking success for Florida’s economy last year, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) will be taking place this autumn from 26th to 30th October 2022. With a $1.79 billion contribution to Florida’s economy in 2021, the Fort Lauderdale show is deservedly recognised as the largest in-water boat show in the world.  

Stretching across 90 acres, including 300 million square feet of exhibiting space, FLIBS has become one of the most prominent international yacht shows. In 2019, the five-day show saw hundreds of thousands of visitors and over 1,300 boats on display, and is only set to grow further in 2022. With the 2021 FLIBS having taken place only months ago, more details of this year’s show are yet to be announced, but we are certain that the line-up will be an impressive one. 

After a turbulent few years, this year’s American Yachting Calendar once again welcomes some of the largest yacht shows in the world, and we cant wait to see what they will bring to 2022.

Based on historical sales data provided by the boating industry MLS service, May through August is the best time to sell your boat. On average there is a 15% increase in sales going from April to May, as well as a 10-15% decrease from August to September.

"But the other thing we've seen is that there are still plenty of buyers out there looking for the right boat for them. We are seeing clients hold on to their boats a little longer than we expected, but the ones that have listed with us have sold it quickly. If it's priced right, and it's still a decent seller's market, and in good condition, it will sell fast."

New data from BOATPro 's Global Fleet Tracker shows that the 10 most travelled yachts during the first six months of 2024 (H1) travelled a cumulative 228,129 nautical miles – eclipsing previous figures from H1 2023 (151,955 nautical miles) and H1 2022 (165,000 nautical miles).

The latest Kismet will make its public debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in late September. For now, it’s chartering in the Med, either with owner Shahid Khan or with guests willing to pay about $3.25 million per week.

The current 400-foot Kismet is a supersized, more refined version of the last vessel, with the same features and even more extravagance, including an underwater Nemo lounge (a bubble in the bottom of the hull for seeing marine life) beneath the cinema, a duplex owner’s suite, a Balinese-inspired spa, and a retro, neon dance floor. Oh, and the jaguar on the bow is permanent this time.

The boat, which accommodates up to 12 guests in 8 staterooms, has a crew of 37. But for social events, it can hold dozens of people, including dining options for 24 on the upper deck, 18 on the main deck and 14 on both the top and pool decks.

It’s the third boat for Khan by Lürssen, which builds the world’s largest superyachts. “The yacht has exceeded all expectations of the client,” noted Peter Lürssen, the firm’s managing partner.

Beyond the amenities, including a DJ station, a custom Boganyi grand piano, a teppanyaki cooking station, and many others, it has a hybrid diesel-electric power train. That hybrid system makes it one of the world’s largest vessels that can go into full-electric mode in eco-sensitive areas, while also having features like a heat-recovery system for heating the pools.

Last year, Khan was supposed to meet with journalists at Monaco to discuss Kismet and his career as a yacht owner, but the then- Kismet (renamed Whisper ) sold just before the show, so that never happened.

UNDER THE CLOUDS

Wednesday and Thursday will see unsettled weather AT TIMES. Neither day will be a washout. In fact, most of the time it will be dry under mainly cloudy skies. The best shot for a little rain today will be in the morning, especially along and south of the MA Pike. Thunderstorms will pop up in NY and western New England this afternoon, but I’m not expecting much locally. Keep your outdoor plans and be ready for elevated humidity and highs in the low to mid 70s.

An abundance of clouds Thursday will help limit thunderstorms coverage as a cold from passes through in the afternoon. Just isolated coverage is expected with more mostly dry and muggy weather. Tomorrow will be hotter too! Get set for highs in the lower 80s.

FRIDAY & THE WEEKEND

We have another marvelous Friday and weekend stretch on the way. Highs will land in the 80s, but humidity will stay relatively low for this time of the year. You’ll need lots and lots of sunscreen for bright weather that will last for days! The weather will again be perfect for the Friday morning Zip Trip, this time to Holliston!
