How Lil Yachty’s Incredible “1 Night” Music Video Came Together

Josh goldenberg and rahil ashruff of goldrush dish on their cold day on a boat with lil boat, making a video full of memes, and the puppy that didn’t make the cut..

golden one yachty

The new video for Lil Yachty 's "1 Night" didn't necessarily break the internet, but it did perfectly distill it. Featuring an impressive number of memes, enumerable GIF-able moments, cute animals, and a cast of familiar faces plucked of Vine and Instagram, it seemingly arrived ready to go viral.

The video the brainchild of Josh " Glassface " Goldenberg and Rahil Ashruff , who together make up the production company Goldrush . Friends since high school, they've made similarly out-there videos for OG Maco, Rome Fortune, Tunji Ige, and Ab-Soul, with Ashruff acting as producer and Goldenberg handling the editing and FX.

Reached by phone on Tuesday, Goldenberg told The FADER that this project began with a tweet. "Yachty got in touch with us," he recalled. "He sent us a tweet saying he wanted to do a video with us, and then I think a month went by. After a month of not talking about it, I reached out to Coach and was like, 'We have to shoot this video ASAP.' Then I think it happened a week or two later. The whole process was pretty fast."

In all, it took one day of shooting—half spent on a boat, on a chilly early spring day; and the other half spent in front of a green screen with a wardrobe rack of nautical attire and accessories to play with—two weeks of editing, some heavy Google Image searching, and minimal back and forth with Yachty and co.

Below, Goldenberg and Ashruff describe their valiant attempts to make the most viral-ready video ever, explain how many memes is too many, and reveal that there was a puppy cast but cut from the final product.

How did you come up with the idea for the video?

Josh Goldenberg: We initially had a slightly different idea—basically, Rahil heard the song and he felt the video needed to have a karaoke vibe to it—and then saw how viral Yachty was, so I suggested we make very meme-able, GIF-able material. It seemed like shooting in front of a green screen, just getting shots of Yachty having fun, would be very shareable content for people to see.

Rahil Ashruff: The karaoke element is there—it's kind of ambiguous, but it's supposed to be kind of like a karaoke screen, but a futuristic one—but it's more about being a piece of digital media for people to share than being a full, fleshed out concept.

What did Yachty think?

Josh: He loved it. He had seen a few other videos we had done—OG Maco[’s “U Guessed It” ], Rome Fortune's "Four Seasons," that's one of his favorite videos. So once he saw the treatment, he was really into it. I don't think he had any changes, really.

[The video for Jay Z’s] “Big Pimpin’” was one reference I sent to them. We were initially going to have Yachty drinking champagne and pouring champagne for the girls on the boat, but Coach was like, “He's 18 years old.”

Where did you get the boat?

Rahil: It's hard to rent a boat in New York! What I learned is that boats don't really go out until April 1, and we shot the video before April, so that was tough.

Josh: The boat captain called us when we were on the way to shooting and was like, “Is there anyway we can shoot tomorrow? The water is super choppy, we might tip over.” But Rahil had a flight the next day, so we only had one day and we had to shoot it.

Rahil: That was the first time we met Yachty face to face. He was freezing—oh my god, it was so cold.

Josh: My actual very first interaction, when I met him on the shoot, he was like, "Yo, I remember when I reached out to you guys when I was in high school." And I was like, "Wasn't that like two months ago."

There are a lot of familiar faces in this video—

Rahil: Shabazz is the person who put us in touch with all these girls, so she should get the credit for helping us out with the talent.

Josh: There's Vine people, like Lean and Cuisine , but then there's also SoHo fashion kids and there's definitely a lot of internet people in it. Yachty is friends with a lot of those people, but I think it was also definitely expressed that we were trying to make something that would kind of go viral and that people would want to share. Incorporating a lot of cameos, you are going to get a lot of people in the video who are going to share clips of the video, so it definitely made sense.

Staring down the green screen, how do you decide where to start? What to add?

Josh: It was pretty daunting, because there were so many moments. But once I got into it, it took me two weeks to edit and add all the visual stuff. I did it in layers: I did a cut in just pure green screen with no background, then I created some different layers to put into the backgrounds, then I did an additional overlay—I kept adding layers to it as I went, and it just kind of came together.

Rahil: [We did] a lot of Google image searching to find the right images.

Josh: Honestly, I'm not super tuned into memes so I asked a lot of people about what they thought would be funny in this video. The only thing Yachty specifically asked me to add was—there's a shot of this guy doing like a super fast dab. He's a bigger guy, he has red sunglasses on and a polo shirt, and he does a hyper fast dab. He texted me specifically to add that shot: "Just make sure to include him doing that super fast dab." And I was like, "Alright, I got you." But aside from that, they basically just let us do whatever.

Was there anything you added, and then decided it was too much?

Josh: We went through certain memes that didn't make it into the final cut. We had a Barack Obama one that I thought was hilarious, for when he says, Baby, I got shit to do , and it was [set to a picture of] Obama on the phone. They weren't into it. I made a Jesus meme, for when he says, You'll be calling out to Christ, but that didn't seem right. I'm not even going to talk about the Cosby one.

Rahil: There was some slight hesitation with the Jay Z one, but I think we all loved it. And then when Yachty saw it, he loved it too.

Josh: And it's all in good fun. Yachty is a positive artist, so even including stuff like that, I think people perceive it in the right way. He's not trying to say anything negative towards anybody, he's just kind of including Jay Z in the video, not calling him out or anything.

Where did you find that Kitten?

Rahil: The kitten, that's Craigslist; you can find anything on Craigslist. It was adorable, we gave it to Yachty.

Josh: The idea was, obviously kitten videos are the most watched thing on YouTube, so by incorporating an adorable kitten—we also had a puppy that didn't really get much play in this video—but just incorporating cute animals, we wanted to hit every possible aspect. Fire on all cylinders.

So the goal was to make the most shareable video maybe ever.

Josh: I don't know if we want to expressly state that, but it pretty much was. Entertaining and re-playable video is probably a better way to put it, because saying you want to make a "shareable" video doesn't sound very organic.

Rahil: We definitely put a lot of thought into this, but the goal was just entertainment overall.

Moscow's High Rise Bohemia: The International Business District With No Business

golden one yachty

  • Written by Dario Goodwin
  • Published on March 17, 2015

The Moscow International Business Center (Also known as Moskva-City ) was meant to be Russia ’s ticket into the Western world. First conceived in 1992, the district at the edge of Moscow’s city center is intended to contain up to 300,000 inhabitants, employees and visitors at any given moment and, when completed, will house over 4 million square meters of prime retail, hotel and office space to create what the Russian government desired most from this project: an enormous financial district that could dwarf London’s Canary Wharf and challenge Manhattan . Twenty three years later though, Moscow-based real estate company Blackwood estimates that as much as 45% of this new space is entirely vacant and rents have plummeted far below the average for the rest of Moscow. The only press Moskva-City is attracting is for tenants like the High Level Hostel , a hostel catering to backpackers and other asset-poor tourists on the 43rd floor of the Imperia Tower , with prices starting at $25.50 for a bed in a six-person room. This is not the glittering world of western high finance that was envisioned back in the post-Soviet 90s; but what has it become instead?

golden one yachty

As one might expect from a project of this sheer ambition, Moskva-City has a troubled past. The economic crash in 2008 hit Russia hard enough to evict the previous Mayor of Moscow , Yuri Luzhkov, who had been a cheerleader for the district, and replace him with the considerably more austere Sergei Sobyanin, who famously declared that the whole idea was an “urban planning mistake.” But as recently as 2013, the Wall Street Journal was triumphantly claiming that Moskva-City had risen from the dead, citing 80% occupancy rates and glowing quotes from industry insiders claiming that Moskva-City was the "place to be." Driven by record highs in oil prices, Moscow looked poised to become the next Dubai .

Instead, Moscow is now in the grip of an economic winter prompted by western sanctions and drops in the price of oil. The large financial groupings that Moskva-City was meant to shelter have been warned off by their inability to issue credit to international markets, for example - but Moskva-City isn’t just an Empire State Building left empty by the Great Depression.

A fundamental problem that is holding Moskva back compared to the rest of Moscow is the simple fact that currently, getting to Moskva-City is nigh-on impossible at peak hours. Moscow has long been plagued with transport problems, ever since the government failed to match the dramatic expansion of the city with a dramatic expansion of the transport system after the Second World War. Despite being only 2.5 miles from the Kremlin , Moskva-City is only just inside the ring road that bounds the city center and which acts as the only real transport link to it (and as a result, is clogged by construction vehicles.) A railway and metro hub has been finished, but so far only runs a one-stop shuttle service to the closest Metro station that is actually integrated with the rest of Moscow Metro. The isolation of the outer districts is a large, negative part of the Moscow psyche, and it’s not surprising that this is driving away the globetrotting financial elite this project was meant to attract.

golden one yachty

The project is managed by architectural practice No.6, which is a constituent part of the large Moscow based practice Mosproject-2 , which is itself a public corporation headed up by Mikhail Vasilyevich Posokhin, who is apparently the “People’s Architect of Russia.” Despite all this state involvement, the project has still managed to become bogged down in bureaucratic infighting - each lot is managed and developed individually, which has led to developers competing for occupants by slashing rates.

Much has been written about the way modern financial districts and towers that inhabit them can be unwelcoming, forbidding or even hostile by design, but the skyscrapers of Moskva-City seem even less friendly than usual. The site - a former stone quarry, chosen out of necessity as the only place in the city center where a new district could be plausibly constructed - is isolated both physically and visually, leaving the cluster a stark anomaly on the city skyline. Even the names seem more imposing than optimistic now: Imperia, City of Capitals , Steel Peak.

golden one yachty

The Mercury City Tower , so far the tallest completed building on the site, is officially “a strong reference to Russian constructivism, [which] gives the tower a strong vertical thrust similar to the one found in New York's Chrysler building .” It would be easy to criticize the Mercury City Tower for picking ‘inspirations’ that are so totally opposed to each other - The Chrysler building the defining emblem of American pre-crash confidence and Constructivism created with the express purpose (especially architecturally) of extending the Bolshevik revolution into a social revolution - but the way they smash those two inspirations together is almost beautifully ironic.

golden one yachty

Even though the High Level Hostel is less an asset to a financial district than it is a PR problem, it’s been a huge success since opening in September, already ranked 27th out of 766 hostels in Moscow by TripAdvisor. According to the management agency for Moskva-City , 58% of the new occupant signings this year have been non-financial, including a number of small to medium size businesses. Other areas of office space have been occupied by a restaurant and a culinary school, while another space has been redeveloped into a 6,000 seat theater.

While Moskva-City is failing to be a financial district that could take on the world, it’s inadvertently becoming a humanized space catering to the very groups that the Russian economic miracle left behind. Taking advantage of rents lower than the rest of Moscow , the world class facilities and the sheer desperation of the developers, the humanization of Moskva-City could well create the world’s first high-rise bohemia.

golden one yachty

Of course, these are not spaces designed for a community, or even for people: these are spaces designed for money, and there’s little scope for changing something that seems so baked into the design of Moskva-City . The High Level Hostel is trading off of the irony of being a hostel in a banking tower, but it’s perfectly possible that at some point people will no longer find this joke funny (especially in a building that seems hostile to the very idea of humor). The isolation of Moskva, even though it allowed this community to spring up in the first place, is just as detrimental to a humanized district as it is to a financial one: even bohemians need to move around the city, or the district risks becoming a black-spot instead of a hot-spot.

Moskva-City’s isolation won’t last forever. The end of construction will open the roads up to traffic, and plans to properly integrate the spur lines of the Metro in this area into the wider system are well under way. The integration of the district will inevitably push up rents, and the Russian economy will eventually boom once again. When that happens, Moskva-City is prime territory to be reconquered by the giants of international finance, and it seems unlikely that the municipal or national governments would want to step in to protect this accidental district. For now, though, the towers capture perfectly this moment of Russia ’s schizophrenic understanding of its place in the world.

March Madness: Florida Tabbed No. 7 Seed in 2024 NCAA Tournament

Photo: Todd Golden and the Florida Gators; Credit: Zach Goodall

Following its run to the 2024 SEC Championship, which ended in a devastating loss to Auburn on Sunday, Florida's spot in the annual NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has been finalized.

The Gators' 21-10 regular season record, including Quad-1 victories over Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Auburn and Alabama, and a three-victory surge in the SEC Tournament over the past week, which included two more Quad-1 wins, was enough to lock Florida in as a No. 7 seed in March Madness.

Officially, the Gators (24-11, 11-7 SEC) are going dancing for the first time since the 2020-21 season, when Florida fell to Oral Roberts in the second round.

Earning a spot in the South Region, UF will travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for the first weekend of tournament play. Florida's first matchup will be against either Boise State or Colorado, programs that will fight for the No. 10 seed in the First Four Round, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday.

Time and television information for the NCAA Tournament will be announced by CBS/TBS later on Sunday.

Florida's 2024 March Madness appearance marks its first under Todd Golden, accomplishing a primary goal of the second-year head coach as he stated in an exclusive interview with All Gators before the season.

"We can take that next step, which to me, is making the NCAA Tournament," Golden said. "I would say that would be a good season."

Following Golden's offseason roster overhaul, in which Florida welcomed four transfers and two high school prospects who would go on to play significantly in 2023-24, the Gators did exactly that.

Transfer guards Zyon Pullin and Walter Clayton Jr . spearheaded UF's aggressive, up-tempo offense throughout the season, a unit that averaged 85.1 points and 15 assists per game.

Pullin and Clayton's backcourt efforts were supplemented by multi-year UF wing Will Richard , who started in all but one game on the year as Florida' tended to deploy three guards and two bigs at a time. Pullin, Clayton and Richard each eclipsed a 40% field goal percentage on the year and averaged 11+ points per game.

Notably, Pullin's 3.9-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked No. 2 among all qualified players in the NCAA in 2023-24. His 47.7% three-point percentage was good for second-best among Florida's shooters.

Down low, transfers Tyrese Samuel and Micah Handlogten  proved to be dependable two-way players. Samuel finished as Florida's top rebounder with 7.5 per game on average, including nearly three per game offensively, to go with 14 points per contest.  Handlogten produced 6.9 rebounds per game and UF's best shooting percentage among qualifying contributors, a 62.2% clip.

Freshmen, Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh , offered valuable frontcourt depth, as each player averaged double-digit minutes and provided meaningful presences on the glass. Condon's 6.3 rebounds per game ranked No. 3 on the team; Haugh's 3.7 ranked No. 6.

Additionally, Condon's 43 blocked shots were the most of any Gator during the 2023-24 campaign.

Despite their youth and lack of significant starting experience, Florida will lean on the freshmen duo in the NCAA Tournament after Handlogten fractured his lower left leg in Sunday's SEC Championship. Handlogten is expected to undergo surgery  for the injury later Sunday.

Find the schedule for the 2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament below.

  • First Four: March 19-20
  • First round: March 21-22
  • Second round: March 23-24
  • Sweet 16: March 28-29
  • Elite Eight: March 30-31
  • Final Four: April 6 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona
  • NCAA championship game: April 8 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

13. Moscow Metro

Moscow Metro

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

Using the metro is the quickest and easiest way to get around Moscow and braving the crowds of commuters is well worth it for the beauty all around you.

12. Arbat Street

Arbat Street

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Alyssa Raghu denies hijacking friend's 'American Idol' audition, slams show's 'harmful' edit

golden one yachty

" American Idol " contestant Alyssa Raghu is speaking out against the way her latest appearance on the show was edited, alleging the episode helped to perpetuate a sexist and "harmful" narrative.

In a TikTok posted after Sunday's episode of "American Idol," Raghu denied hijacking her best friend's audition and said it was "really disappointing" that the singing competition show portrayed a "false narrative of betrayal" and pitted "two female friends against each other, seemingly for the sake of ratings and drama." She alleged the edit was rooted in sexism and argued that the situation would not have happened "had I been a male artist."

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for "American Idol" for comment.

Sunday's episode of "American Idol" featured the audition of Julia Davo, a 20-year-old waitress from Brooklyn. She said she was encouraged to try out by her best friend and roommate, Raghu, who previously competed on the show in 2018 and 2019. "She's so supportive, and she told me she thinks I would be great for the show," Davo said.

Davo ultimately earned two "no" votes from judges Katy Perry and Luke Bryan , although Lionel Richie voted "yes" and compared her to a young Lady Gaga . Raghu, who was waiting outside, subsequently came into the room. In a surprising twist, Raghu then auditioned herself and impressed the judges, earning two "yes" votes and a ticket to Hollywood just minutes after her friend was rejected.

But in her TikTok video, Raghu argued the way the episode was edited was misleading. She said "American Idol" producers invited her to the set as a guest after Davo mentioned her name during the pre-audition process, and Davo encouraged her to have a song ready in case the judges asked her to perform.

"However, the episode was edited to make it seem like I went into the room with the intention of hijacking Julia's audition and took her golden ticket, when there was, in fact, enough tickets to go around and for her to absolutely have one," she said.

During the episode, Bryan suggested that Davo could shadow her if she proceeded with the show. Because of this, Raghu, who said she was "absolutely devastated" her friend didn't make it to the next round, alleged she was "baited" into believing her "audition was not only for myself, but rather to find a way for Julia to continue" and be part of the show's "Hollywood Week." Raghu also said footage was cut of her and Davo pleading with the judges to let her sing more songs. Additionally, Raghu said she performed a second song, which was actually her "real audition" but was not shown on TV.

At the end of the scene, Raghu could be heard talking to Davo and offering to throw away her golden ticket. Although this dialogue appeared in the episode, Raghu argued the show "diminished" the significance of this moment, which was "important because we felt misled in the situation."

The episode drew backlash toward Raghu online, with fans arguing she had betrayed her friend by using her to get back on the show. "She just used her 'friend' to shove her way into an audition," one fan commented on a YouTube clip of the episode. "Calculated." The title of the official YouTube clip of Raghu's appearance also stated that she "sneaks in on Julia Davo's audition."

Raghu ended her TikTok video by apologizing to viewers "for any confusion or misunderstandings caused by the way the show was edited," and she urged "American Idol" producers to invite Davo on the show. During her previous appearances on "American Idol," Raghu made it as far as the top eight.

"American Idol" airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
