In  Turkey  & Croatia you also have an additional charter option: the possibility of renting a gulet  with a full crew. Gulets are traditionally Turkish-built wooden motor sailor yachts which are usually much larger in volume than your average sailing yacht, with an abundance of open-plan living spaces.

Turkish gulet yachts are less expensive than other charter vessels of the same size, and can often offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and can provide a lot of valuable expertise.

You can visit Greek Islands on your Turkish gulet charter vacation, but you will need to embark and disembark in a port in Turkey unless it has a Greek Charter Licence - which is very rare. 

Gulets are not available in the West Mediterranean cruising areas.

The average price of a motor yacht or sailing yacht rental in the Mediterranean will depend on several factors, including the vessel's age, type, crew, as well as the duration of the vacation and whether it is high or low season.

One aspect to keep in mind is that there are important distinctions to be made between the average costs for West Mediterranean and East Mediterranean yachting vacations. While exact costs can vary from yacht to yacht, typically, West Mediterranean yacht charters will involve newer, larger vessels and include a high-quality, international workforce, and therefore tend to usually incur higher prices. Meanwhile, East Mediterranean yacht charters will usually use older vessels and feature highly knowledgeable local crews.

When is the Best Time for Mediterranean Yacht Charters?

The best time for a yachting vacation on the Mediterranean is between May and August, although weather is still pleasant in the shoulder months of April and September, with some East Mediterranean locations experiencing high temperatures well into October (Croatia, Turkey, Greece).

We advise booking your Mediterranean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Mediterranean.

One of the wonderful aspects about renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is the exceedingly long season. For example in West Mediterranean locations like France, Spain and Italy, the best time to visit is usually from May until September. This balmy weather extends to well into October in East Mediterranean destinations like Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey.

For your Mediterranean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Mediterranean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests. 

Please consult your yacht charter broker for any other costs you may need to factor in for your yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

Timing & Weather: The Mediterranean Yachting Season

The Mediterranean yachting season generally runs from April to the end of October. During the height of the season, in July and August, the climate is warm and sunny and the winds tend to be light. While this is the high season for all tourism, you can still easily avoid onshore tourists while afloat. The weather can also be good during the shoulder seasons.

Tip: Shoulder Season Means Value & Choice

Another good time to charter your yacht is generally on either of the shoulder seasons from April-May and September-October. These periods fall each side of the main summer season when the temperatures are still comfortable. The Advanced Provisioning Allowance acts as a bank account and is designed to cover expenses that cannot be fixed in advance, such as food and drink, fuel, and berthing fees. The APA is typically around 25 to 35%. of the yacht charter fee and is paid before the charter commences. The captain is responsible for logging all APA expenses, and you can view the expenses at any time during your boat charter. Any funds left in the APA at the end of your charter holiday are immediately refunded to you.

Want to moor up and explore the on-shore wonders of the Mediterranean? Much like the cost of your relaxing sailing holiday, berthing and mooring fees in the Mediterranean will depend on a number of factors:

• Your destination
• The size of your yacht
• The Marina you’re mooring up at
• Time of year

Croatia, Italy, and Greece all have different berthing and mooring fees. In Croatia , catamarans pay a 50-60% supplement on top of the overnight mooring fee. Depending on the size of your yacht, you could pay as little as around EUR 60.00 or as much as EUR 200.00 per night.

If you’re chartering a yacht around Italy , your berthing and mooring fees could be between EUR 40.00 for a smaller yacht to over EUR 400.00 if you’re setting sail on a large yacht during peak sailing season. Again, catamarans may be asked to pay a supplement of 50-60%.

The cheapest mooring fees out of our stunning Mediterranean destinations come from Greece , where you would expect to pay between EUR 23.00 to EUR 70.00. It is less common than in Croatia and Italy, but you may also be expected to pay a 50-60% supplement if you’re sailing on a catamaran.

There are two main regions to book a mediterranean yacht charter.

West Mediterranean

The French Riviera is home to the world's most rich and famous and attracts party goers and the refined elite alike. Southern France provides both the high life and tranquil relaxation. Visiting the French Riviera, you must include Cannes and Monaco. St. Tropez, Antibes, and Nice are very popular also to include on a western mediterranean charter.

The Italian Riviera is famous for its smaller picturesque villages and towns. From the northern coast near France to the islands off Naples and on toward Sicily, there is no better view than one from the sea. Visit Portofino and Cinque Terra, the Amalfi Coast and Naples including Pompeii. Other hotspots include shopping on Capri and visiting the Blue Grotto.

East Mediterranean

Charter yachts can cruise the waters of Greece, Turkey, and Croatia. East Mediterranean yacht charters combine perfect blue green seas with fabled history and natural splendors. This area tends to be less touristy, and there are many ancient sites to explore. One of the world's most beautiful regions, the Aegean overflows with islands that beckon.

When you book family sailing holidays in the Mediterranean, you can visit any of the islands and see beautiful locations such as Vathi, Sami, Fiskardo, Sivota Bay, Kalamos, and Ormos Vrako.

As part of our general itinerary programme and sailing our private yacht charter in the Mediterranean, you can expect stops at Melissani Cave, the home of Odysseus in Vathi as well as a visit to the Blue Caves.

When you hire a private yacht, you also have the option to choose if you want a full crew on board, to cook and clean and serve you during the seven days. You can also change the services or swap out services as you prefer.

SIR Rod Stewart has jetted off on a luxury holiday to Porto Cervo with his family and model wife, Penny Lancaster.

The legendary rocker, 79, was tagged in a series of snaps with his family as he relaxed in the sunshine on the stunning island of Sardinia .

The singer enjoyed some time in the Mediterranean sunshine with sons Aiden , 13, and Alastair , 18, and daughters Ruby , 37, and Kimberly , 44.

His baby grandson Otis , who is just over a year old, and his two sons-in-law Adam Sumner and Jake Alick were also there.

The family posted a series of adorable snaps from the holiday on Instagram, giving fans an insight into their trip.

In one of the photos, the family can be seen enjoying a luxurious yacht trip out in the Mediterranean Sea.

Penny , 53, was all smiles as she held a very excited Otis up on a white comfy couch with the wind blowing through her hair.

Rod can be seen having a chuckle at his grandson's joy as he lay on a cushion next to Aiden.

In another snap shared by Ruby, Adam was "fed six beers" by the adults as he said at the edge of a speedboat.

And Aiden looked to be having the time of his life as he straddled the edge of a speedboat surrounded by luxury yachts.

Rod also shared a snap of himself on a luxury boat in wearing a crazy black and white striped outfit.

He told fans: "I'm all striped up on me holidays".

Rod is currently enjoying some time with his family before his shows in Las Vegas later this month.

He is set to perform at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace for two weeks as part of his The Hits show.

The rocker will take to the stage in front of a packed crowd from Wednesday, July 24, until Wednesday, August 7.

Fans flocked to the comments of the Instagram post and wished him a nice time on his family holiday.

One person wrote: " Enjoy your holidays".

Another added: "Ever nice holidays, Rod".

While a third posted: "I'd love to join you in the Mediterranean".

And a fourth chimed in: "Just pure absolute love for this man".

But others were distracted by his choice of outfit.

SUPERSTAR'S SUPERCAR

A LAMBORGHINI that was owned by Rod Stewart for 25 years has gone up for auction at an unbelievable price.

The star bought the 1977 classic on a tour of Australia and had it shipped to his  LA pad  when he was done.

The Lamborghini Countach only came out three years before this bright red version was snapped up by the musical legend.

It then went up for auction last week with bids starting at £400,000.

The Hot Legs singer couldn't resist the allure of the stunning supercar and even brought it back to blighty with him when he moved back from the States in the early noughties.

Sir Rod is a renowned petrolhead and collector of luxury cars, owning one of just 400  Ferrari Enzos  ever made.

He parted ways with the  Lambo  after a quarter of a century back in 2002 even after it was specially modified by Albert Madikian Engineering in California.

The motor was subsequently converted to left-hand drive and taken back to America and underwent a full remodel in 2022.

This particular Countach is the exceptionally rare Periscopio version, of which only 150 were made in a limited run from 1974-78.

Inside it is trimmed in stylish Tobacco leather and appears to be in pristine condition.

The calico dashboard doesn't have a mark on it and the retro  Lamborghini Raging Bull logo  is proudly embossed in gold at the centre of the steering wheel.

A fan commented: "Rod Stewart. Love you so much but sort that outfit out. Just no."

And a second said: "Darlin’ I do wonder what goes through your mind sometimes when you look in the wardrobe!"

A third commented: "Beetlejuice!" with a laughing emoji.

How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”
