Three Chattanoogans among America’s billionaires

April 10, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.

by Dave Flessner

Three Chattanooga-area business leaders are among a dozen billionaires in Tennessee on Forbes magazine's new list of the wealthiest people on the planet.

The richest residents in Southeast Tennessee have each built up businesses in key industries for the regional economy — carpets, soft drink bottling and senior housing. But Forbes estimates two of the three local billionaires are worth only about half as much as they were in the past.

Among the 2,640 billionaires around the world identified by Forbes, the 90-year-old founder of Life Care Centers of America in Cleveland, Tennessee, is the wealthiest in the Chattanooga area with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion. Forbes said Forrest Preston's wealth has dropped from his peak estimated net worth of $2 billion in 2015 after the company agreed in 2016 to pay $145 million to settle a government lawsuit alleging the firm had over-billed federal healthcare programs.

Preston remains the sole owner and CEO of the nation's biggest privately owned nursing home and assisted living business he founded in 1970. He has acquired major office buildings in Chattanooga , including the Tallan and Krystal buildings.

Jeffrey Lorberbaum, the 68-year-old who lives in North Chattanooga and has helped grow the Calhoun, Georgia-based Mohawk Industries into the biggest floor covering manufacturer in the world with nearly $12 billion in annual sales, is estimated to be worth $1.1 billion by Forbes.

Lorberbaum's wealth swelled to $2.5 billion in 2018, primarily due to his nearly 15% stake in the company his father founded as Aladdin Mills in 1957. But the company's stock has since declined due to global slowdown, pricing pressures in the floor covering industry, and complaints that the company improperly inflated sales and profits . Summerfield Johnston Jr., the 90-year-old retired Coca-Cola executive whose family owns one of the biggest Coke bottling businesses, rounds out the local billionaires' club with an estimated worth of $1 billion.

photo

Johnston's grandfather got the first Coca-Cola bottling license back in 1899, and the world's largest beverage company is still making the Johnstons rich today after the third generation Coke bottler turned the business into the largest independent Coke bottler in the world.

By 1991, when Coke's own bottler Coca-Cola Enterprises was struggling and looking for new leadership, the company bought Johnston's Chattanooga-based bottling business and named him as its CEO. He stepped down as CEO in 2001 and retired his chairmanship in 2007, but he still holds a 7% stake in Coca-Cola Enterprises.

Tennessee's political wealth

Across all of Tennessee, Forbes counts 12 billionaires, led by the founding family of the world's biggest hospital chain, HCA Healthcare. The financial magazine estimates Thomas Frist Jr., who founded Hospital Corporation of America in 1968 with his father, is worth $20.2 billion, down slightly from his estimated wealth of $21.8 billion the previous year.

HCA owns and operates 187 hospitals, including Parkridge Health System in Chattanooga.

Frist's brother, heart surgeon Bill Frist, served as a U.S. Senator for Tennessee from 1995 to 2007, including four years as the Senate Majority Leader.

Another Tennessee political family on the Forbes list is the Haslams in Knoxville, who started the Pilot Flying J chain of truck stops in 1958 and built the business into more than 800 locations across North America. Bill Haslam, who served as mayor of Knoxville from 2003 to 2010 and was Tennessee governor from 2010 to 2018, is worth $2.5 billion. His older brother Jimmy, who also owns majority control of the Cleveland Browns, is worth $4.8 billion, according to Forbes.

Georgia has 16 billionaires, all living in either Atlanta or Hampton, Georgia, according to Forbes. Gary Rollins, who made a fortune in pest control and contributed $25 million to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, is worth $5.5 billion, ranking as the 358th wealthiest person in the world.

Fewer billionaires

Despite a jump in inflation last year, Forbes said the total number of billionaires in the world fell for the second consecutive year in 2022 to 2,668, or 28 fewer than the previous year. Forbes reported nearly half of the world's richest people are poorer than they were a year ago.

Those falling off the Forbes list include crypto wunderkind-turned-fraud defendant Sam Bankman Fried, his co-founder and possible courtroom opponent Gary Wang, and musician Kanye West, among others.

One person dropped out of the billionaires club by choice. Yvon Chouinard, the founder of the outdoor clothing and gear maker Patagonia in 1973, donated the company to a trust and a nonprofit fighting environmental crises in September 2022.

"No one had a better year than Bernard Arnault, who is No. 1 on the World's Billionaires list for the first time," Forbes reporter Chase Peterson-Withorn reported in the magazine. "Record sales and profits have driven shares of his luxury goods leviathan LVMH, which owns brands such Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Tiffany, to new heights."

Arnault is worth an estimated $211 billion, up $53 billion from a year earlier.

The United States continues to have the most billionaires with 735 American citizens on the Forbes ranking, worth a total of $4.5 trillion. China (including Hong Kong and Macau) was second with 562 billionaires, followed by India (169), Germany (126) and Russia (105).

This type of phobia can range from mild to severe, and can cause shortness of breath, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, and other signs of anxiety, such as shaking or a sense of impending doom.

Causes of dental phobia and how to help your patients

Up to eight percent of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear. Although not all of those cases would be classified as dental phobia, a fear of the dentist is a very common issue that can lead to some very serious oral health problems. Let’s examine some of the causes of dental phobia, and what you can do to help your patients address it.

Mark allan lorberbaum.

Lorberbaum, Mark Allan Mark Lorberbaum of Cincinnati, OH, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2020 at age 71. Mark was born to Jerome and Anne Lorberbaum in Minneapolis, MN on November 15, 1949. After attending Southwest High School, he attended the University of Minnesota and graduated as a Chemical Engineer. After graduation, he married Sally, and they moved out to California. While there, he worked for Alza and then attended Stanford. Upon graduation with his MBA, they returned to Minnesota to be near family as they started their own family. In Minnesota, he worked at 3M where he had a long and successful career. Toward the end of his 3M career, he moved to Cincinnati where he met and married Amy. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, photography, and time with family. In his last weeks, many people shared stories of his incredible generosity and the kindnesses he shared with many throughout his life. We are grateful that Mark beat the odds and survived longer than his prognosis. Mark was preceded in death by his parents Jerome & Anne Lorberbaum and brother Stuart Lorberbaum. Mark is loved and survived by his wife Amy Gerowitz; son Michael Lorberbaum (Melissa Cohen); daughter Mollie Lorberbaum; sister-in-law Jane Shriver; step-son Mat Gerowitz (Susannah Plunkett); and grandchildren Spencer, Rachel, Lucinda, and Tessa as well as many cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Second Harvest Heartland (MN) or the Freestore Foodbank (OH). Due to COVID-19, a virtual memorial service and shiva are planned for Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Contact the family for details.

The Palm Beach brand takes its name not from Florida but from the idyllic peninsular of Sydney’s Northern Beaches where our founder and CEO, Mark Richards, grew up and discovered an all-consuming passion for the sea.

EVOLUTION OF A CLASSIC

Mark started sailing at the age of six, racing with the Manly juniors, and then went on to spend his teenage years at the Royal Motor Yacht Club where he completed his apprenticeship as a shipwright.

By the age of twenty he was competing in the Admiral’s cup as a professional yachtsman and then spent ten exciting and challenging years travelling the world on the match racing Grand Prix circuit.

This experience gave Mark a grounding in every aspect of designing and building boats. From sweeping the floors to helping John McConachy develop cutting edge innovations for America’s Cup yachts, he learned the trade and craft from top to bottom and inside out.

A BREAK WITH TRADITION

And then in 1995, he saw an opportunity.

Inspired by the lines of the lobster boats he’d seen while racing in the US, he decided to design and build what he called a ‘sailor’s power boat’ – a highly efficient, high speed cruising motor yacht.

He studied the competitors and found them to be heavy, unstable and wildly inefficient. So, drawing from his racing experience, he set out to build a lighter boat, one whose hull gave a fine entry into the water, a softer ride and consumed only half the fuel.

Working with basic 2D drawings, he created the concept of the first PB38 and immediately sold four of them off the plan.

mark lorberbaum yacht

This was the launch of our company and it created the mold for our way of working, our standards, our values and ambitions.

mark lorberbaum yacht

CONSTANT EVOLUTION

Since those early days, the PB38 has spawned the nine models in our range, every one of them an evolution of its predecessor.

Twenty-five years on, Mark is still involved in every aspect of the design and manufacture of our boats. They’re born in his imagination. (Seventeen have started their lives in the notebook beside his bed!)

The designs are then rendered under his scrupulous eye before construction is approved. Once in the factory, every boat is subject to his fanatical attention to detail.

It’s fair to say that if you have a problem on board a Palm Beach Motor Yacht, Mark is the only CEO in the world who can pick up a tool kit and come and fix it!

THE WILD OATS YEARS

Wild oats xi and skipper mark richards are an extraordinary success story – winners of the rolex sydney to hobart yacht race an unimaginable nine times.

mark lorberbaum yacht

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP

Back in the late 90s, Mark first collaborated with Bob Oatley to develop a series of 60ft racing yachts. This teamwork culminated in the sloop ‘Another Duchess’ which proved to be the star performer in the 2003 Race Week at Hamilton Island. With Mark at the helm, she was described by competitors and pundits alike as ‘Unstoppable!’

However, it was the arrival of Wild Oats IX in the same year that cemented Australia’s most successful racing partnership. Named after one of Bob’s vineyards in Mudgee, she was the first yacht equipped with a hydraulic canting keel and took Mark to victory in the Admiral’s Cup in England.

Her successor, the 66ft Wild Oats X, also enjoyed great success and won line honours in both the 2005 and 2007 Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race.

IMPOSSIBLE BUT TRUE!

But it is Wild Oats XI that will go down in history. This 100ft maxi yacht was completed only two weeks before the 2005 Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race and yet went on to win the ‘treble’ – line honours, handicap and race record.

And that was just the start of her story. Since then, Mark has skippered Wild Oats XI to victory a further eight times, winning the Treble a second time and repeatedly breaking all records in this most gruelling of races.

It’s the stuff of legend.

Luxury rules at the moscow yacht show.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
