Yacht Market Report: the Only Way is Up

Home > LUXURY/UHNW Trends > Yacht Market Report: the Only Way is Up

Posted by David Breviglieri 11 Oct 2021

Looking at the yacht market report for 2022 and beyond, the industry’s future will be home to an entirely different landscape. The global pandemic has resulted in a shift in attitudes, a host of new travel trends and a spotlight on sustainability like never before. When it comes to yachting, the industry is listening.

Yacht Market Report : the Only Way is Up

The yacht market weathered the uncertainty of the past two years and has come out stronger than ever before. This year has broken all records for yacht sales, with 545 yachts sold in the first three quarters of 2022, according to global superyacht brokerage Fraser. That’s compared to 277 yachts sold for the same period last year and is double the average number of yacht sales at this time of year since 2009.

Interest in yacht charters has also risen from first-time charterers, and we can expect to see the results of the exponential growth in green engineering and technology in the next few years.

Technological innovation is also set to enhance the luxury experience on board, with onboard technology becoming smarter, more sophisticated, and increasingly more implementable.

When it comes to the superyacht experience, various trends all centre around people wanting to travel more, spend quality time with the people they love and explore remote destinations with health and safety at the front of their minds.

It wasn’t just global lockdowns that have stimulated these yacht market trends. Global wealth grew significantly in 2020 and 2021, and according to the SYT iQ 2021 Market Report, new yacht sales also saw substantial growth worldwide. According to Wealth-X, a total of 670 additional billionaires were created in 2020 – a rise of 13%. The worldwide list of High Net Worth Individuals (defined as individuals with more than $5 million net assets) now has over 3 million members.

Here Relevance dives deeper into the biggest yacht market trends expected to emerge in 2022 and beyond.

Yacht Charter: 2022 Trends

When it came to the charter market, top superyacht brokerage houses noted a substantial increase in first-time yacht charter clients in 2020 and 2021. In fact, new charter clients made up around 40% of the luxury charter market this year.

Speaking at the Fraser conference at the Monaco Yacht Show 2021, Mark Duncan, Fraser Director of Marketing & Business Development, hopes that this demand will continue for the foreseeable future.

“Judging by the feedback, especially from those first-time charterers this year, the experience they all enjoyed together seems to have really resonated with them,” Duncan said. “Some of those charterers booked, not for one week or 10-day charters, but three weeks and, on a few occasions, more than a month – they homeschooled on board, they worked on board. They re-positioned lives to being at sea and onboard and loved it. So long may it last.”

The reasons behind these shifts over the past couple of years are clear. The yacht ownership and charter landscape changed in 2020 and 2021, largely due to the global pandemic.

With the worldwide population facing restrictions on movement unprecedented in modern times, several trends in yachting emerged – the majority of which experts agree will continue into 2022 and beyond.

When it comes to cruising behaviour, the world’s top yacht brokers and superyacht charter experts note a rise in multi-generational travel, with a surge of clients looking to spend increased quality time with loved ones.

Charter Destination Trends

In tandem with a heightened priority for family-centred and increasingly extended periods at sea, more and more yacht clients are seeking pristine natural environments to spend their time, with a rise in interest in off-the-beaten-track destinations away from the busy superyacht hotspots.

Again, the reasons behind this yacht market trend are obvious. As the weeks and then the months went by bunkered down in the same location, the advantages of a superyacht became crystal clear. A superyacht offers an isolated environment, a safe place to spend extended periods with family and friends while also allowing a sense of total freedom.

Of course, a luxury yacht has long been the epitome of freedom, but with people stuck to one location like never before, it became more of a serious option for many in the game for a superyacht experience. With the COVID-19 pandemic still very much a global issue, it is a safe bet that the superyacht charter market will continue to grow and attract new clients.

Sustainability: The Future is Green

Sustainability has been a hot topic for the past few years, though it’s clear that the need for sustainable solutions in superyachting is growing.

Environmental awareness spans every level of the superyacht experience, from owner and charter client to shipyard and broker. In response to this growing necessity, the yachting industry is responding.

Some of the most sustainable yachts in the past 10 years include Feadship’s 83-metre M/Y SAVANNAH. Delivered in 2015, M/Y SAVANNAH boasted 30% lower fuel consumption than her competitors and featured Feadship’s innovative Breathe propulsion system. Delivered in the same year was the 76.6-metre M/Y Yersin built by French shipyard Piriou. YERSIN is one of the world’s cleanest vessels, with her long list of sustainable features including emission-reducing filters on her engines to eradicate 99.8% of NOx and SOx emissions. Three years later, the 106-metre sailing yacht BLACK PEARL became the world’s first ‘zero impact’ yacht upon delivery from Oceanco in 2018, while in 2020, Nobiskrug’s 80-metre M/Y ARTEFACT features solar panels, diesel-electric propulsion system with lithium batteries, which reduces emissions by up to 30%.

And sustainable solutions are only becoming more prevalent in the future. Looking to the yacht market in 2022 and beyond, Dutch shipyard Oceanco recently commented that of the five 100+ metre superyachts currently under construction, all include trailblazing sustainable solutions, from alternative propulsion solutions and fuel sources to increased electrification and battery usage for reduced carbon emissions.

Fellow Dutch superyacht shipyard Feadship has noted similar sentiments, while Amels revealed that their latest superyacht under construction – the 120-metre Project Signature designed by Espen Oeino – will be one of the greenest and most ecological vessels out there upon delivery in 2025.

Sustainable Technology Across the Board

But sustainable futures are not just reserved for the large yacht builders. When it comes to the implementation of even newer sustainable superyacht technology, smaller brands like Hynova in France are also paving the way.

With the first models set to hit the water in the near future, Hynova aims to launch the very first brand of boats featuring electro-hydrogen propulsion. Sunreef Yachts, the renowned luxury catamaran builder, unveiled the 100 Eco Catamaran in summer 2021, while the Italian yacht builder Fabiani Yachts revealed their new hybrid yacht range at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021.

The new Fabiana Yachts Hybrid models range from 21 to 30-metres and feature solar panels intelligently integrated into the structure of the boat – the latter a feature seen in more yacht designs and future concepts. From 80+ metre superyachts to 21-metre day boats and everything in between, it’s clear that when it comes to the future of the industry, the yacht market is on the path to going green.

Yacht Market: Luxury Technology

It’s not only engineering and propulsion that is facing significant innovation on board the superyachts of the future. Onboard technology is also being paid more attention than ever before – from an increase in demand for yacht toys and tenders that offer unique experiences, such as personal submarines and hydrofoil tenders, to smart technology products that enhance the everyday experience of life on board. One brand to look out for is YachtCloud, creators of luxury technology catered to the seven-star environments of superyachts. GEST, their service call device, is a fantastic example of the progression of technology, and how that technology enhances the experience onboard. Custom programmed to fit each client’s specific needs and wishes, GEST service call devices also feature a bespoke premium design, meaning that they fit seamlessly into the prestigious environments they are surrounded by.

New Motor Yacht Sales | 2023

By robert steadman.

2022 started with a healthy dollop of enthusiasm. Covid infections were dropping off and the world was opening up for business and travel. This included the UK market which was growing faster than any other country in the G7. It didn’t last long though. The start of the war in Ukraine in early February rocketed global energy prices and it was clear that global inflation was here to stay for a while. The combination of supply chain pressures lingering from the pandemic, raw material shortages and shipping increases meant 2022 was another difficult year for yacht manufacturing and delays became inevitable. Despite the uncertainty, the interest in the yachting sector remained strong with the world now back on the move. The later part of the year saw sterling move close to parity with the dollar however, the euro beat us there! Those holding tech stocks suffered and those holding minerals, fuel and Europeans with high dollar revenues did well. A turbulent year to say the least.

Pearl Yachts continued their upwards sales trajectory with a strong $50m order book. They have been converting owners from the British and Italian higher volume production motor yacht brands, with their unique designs and high level of build quality. Bill Dixon is behind the innovation and superb seakeeping. World-renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen CBE works exclusively with Pearl, and her ever-evolving style offers 3 differing interior choices that are unlike anything else on the market. This brand ensures all yachts come with 5 year warranty as standard and with a current range of 62, 72, 82 and 95 feet, it’s a fantastic time be running the Pearl desk at Berthon! We delivered two new Pearl 62s to clients who are keeping this in the UK and unveiled a new Pearl sales office at Swanwick Marina on the Hamble in 2022. Motor yacht central for large motor yachts in the UK, it’s a great location.

2022 also saw the world premiere of the Pearl 72 in Fort Lauderdale and European premiere at Düsseldorf. This epic 22m flybridge yacht follows the award-winning Pearl 62, which has 24 proud owners and has been successfully delivered all over the world. Expectations were high for the new Pearl 72 and I am delighted to say that she delivers!

The first of her kind, she offers two Master Cabins, one forward with a private entrance, as typically seen on much larger yachts, and the second a full beam amidships. In total there are four beautifully appointed double en-suite cabins as well as accommodation for the crew. She also has an exceptional garage with space for a William 345 tender, Jet Ski and two Sea Bobs. It doesn’t stop there, as two fold down balconies at water level create a beach club. Kelly Hoppen’s new “Indulgence” interior design theme wowed everyone. A sleek modern interior with smooth lines and overlapping textures embodies Kelly’s signature style. The design intent of this yacht was to capture New York City urban living on water, and it is now available across the Pearl range.

Pearl’s shipyard in Xiamen is building up to 15 yachts a year, taking the time to build fewer yachts to ensure the highest standards. All parts are sourced from the team in the UK and are ordered based on their quality credentials

Each build is extremely well managed and overseen by Pearl’s experienced Operations Director, Paul Hannah, who has a very skilful team of 300. Every Pearl yacht goes through a wide ranging programme of testing, both ashore and on the water, before the commissioning process managed by Berthon for the UK and in France.

Boat shows were back in a big way in 2022 and it was clear from attendance levels and from speaking to others in our industry that they had been sorely missed. From the clients’ point of view, it’s the best opportunity to see all the competition on display, before making what is a considered family decision. In the UK we exhibited at London Luxury Afloat in the heart of the City of London and at the Swanwick Motor Yacht Show on the River Hamble with great success.

The Yachting industry is an innovative space and we are seeing some radical technology coming online, including superfast satellite high bandwidth connectivity, Hybrid propulsion systems and artificial intelligence for navigation to name just a few. We all know docking can be stressful! Swedish Volvo Penta, with its long history of collaborating with the US tech giant Garmin, launched the VP Assisted Docking for IPS and the Garmin Surround View Camera System. Assisted Docking has been designed with the Integrated Propulsion System, cleverly calculating how your yacht is being affected by the wind and tide state and counteracting that, all within your desired movement of the Joystick. Additionally, there is a feature (often referred to as the sky hook) to hold the yacht onto the dock, whilst the lines are put ashore. The Garmin Surround View Camera System compliments this and is a live monitoring system that provides a bird’s eye view from the helm, using 6 cameras for a 360-degrees in real time. Together they deliver a greater peace of mind and improve control and spatial awareness when in tight spaces or if weather conditions are challenging.

The longstanding agreement between Windy Scandinavia AB (formerly Windy Boats AS) and Berthon International came to an end in 2022, after 27 successful years and with the two businesses moving in different directions it was a joint decision. We continue to support our Windy clients with aftersales. We are still heavily involved in the Windy brokerage market and our brokerage team have a lot of knowledge to offer. We wish our Scandinavian friends well for the future.

Looking forward, maybe the UK will make it through 2023 with the same Prime Minister? Geopolitics make it clear that no one can predict what is going to happen, but we are prepared for a short slowdown in the world economy and the challenges as well as opportunities that this will bring. Berthon’s debt free status, as ever, will help ease the minds of clients during uncertain financial times. I’m personally very excited to be representing Pearl Yachts who continue to push the boundaries of yacht design and I want to thank all our clients and wish them a fantastic 2023 summer season, enjoying being out on the water with their Pearls.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

motor yacht marken

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

motor yacht marken

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

motor yacht marken

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

motor yacht marken

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

motor yacht marken

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

motor yacht marken

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

motor yacht marken

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

book ends heesen motor yacht for sale

50m Heesen motor yacht Book Ends changes agent

The 49.9-metre motor yacht Book Ends is now listed for sale with Thom Conboy and Chris Collins of Ocean Independence.

Delivered by Heesen in 2022, Book Ends follows Aquamarine as the second unit in the Dutch shipyard's 5000 Aluminium series. She was built by an experienced yachtsman and is in as-new condition with low hours and light owners use. The yacht's sporty exterior is owed to Frank Laupman and the team at Omega Architects , who have given her a sharply tapered bow, distinctive bootstripe, and arching aft decks.

Accommodation is for 12 guests in five cabins, including a full-beam (nine metre) owner's cabin forward on the main deck with marble bathroom, separate study and walk-in wardrobe. There is further accommodation for a complement of nine crew.

Book Ends ' polished, contemporary interiors are designed by Cristiano Gatto , while the walls are hung with a selection of acclaimed modern artists. Interior highlights include oversized windows for ample natural light, an "innovative" saloon design that sees curved bulkheads separating the lounge and dining areas and a main stairwell with atriums on all three levels.

The yacht offers plenty of alfresco space for her owners to make the most out of life on the water. Arranged with lounge seating forward, Jacuzzi and sunpads aft and a bar and dining area amidships, the hardtop sun deck is Book Ends ' main on-deck communal space. The walkaround upper deck benefits from ample guest seating on the foredeck with a large Bimini shade while the main deck aft has a spread of sunpads.

Book Ends ' flex-use beach club is also worth noting – the broker envisions the space converted to a sea-level gym for morning workouts, a lounge area during the day and an entertainment space by night.

Powered by 7,000hp MTU engines, Book Ends can reach a maximum speed of 23 knots and a range of 4,200 nautical miles when pared back to 11 knots. The Tier 3 engines are also "green oceanic", reducing NOx emissions during operations.

A draft of 2.2 metres also allows this yacht for sale to access shallow bays and shoal water regions with ease.

Book Ends is asking €42,000,000 and lying in Fort Lauderdale, USA.
