Lürssen’s 90m expedition yacht NORN delivered

Following her launch in February earlier this year, the highly secretive 90m (295 ft) superyacht NORN , formerly known as Project 1601, has been delivered by iconic German builder Lürssen  and has since left the facilities to embark on her maiden voyage. 

The specifications and amenities for superyacht NORN have been kept a closely guarded secret since her construction began in 2018. However, we know her distinct, geometrical exterior was helmed by Norwegian designer and naval architect Espen Oeino whilst her yet-to-be-revealed interiors are the works of Dölker+Voges Design and are expected to mirror the yacht’s exterior design.

The brief required a superyacht that excels in design and engineering whilst also catering to maximum comfort onboard. Described by the shipyard as a project with “striking design" and "extraordinary features”, superyacht NORN has a utilitarian character, with an oblique reverse bow, narrow rectangular windows, planar surfaces and angular corners. 

Built for a repeat owner, superyacht NORN is a replacement vessel for the iconic 70m (232ft) yacht SKAT , which was delivered in 2002. 

Sharing similar design cues, we can expect that brand new superyacht NORN may follow an alike minimalist interior approach with a variety of light, bright and airy social spaces onboard. There is also expected to be a signature panoramic sky lounge, an additional area onboard where guests can soak up the superyacht lifestyle.

The brief required a superyacht that excels in design and engineering to provide seagoing comfort for the family.

As a custom-built 3,600 GT explorer yacht , NORN is guaranteed to have a helipad, closing the bridge between land and sea for guests onboard. She also features zero-speed stabilizers, an exterior cinema and a liftable pool floor with dancefloor illumination to allow a unique and memorable cruising experience for her guests. Electronic anchoring in sensitive and remote areas is made easy thanks to the use of a dynamic positioning system, ensuring that the seabed is protected regardless of water depth.

Norn was one of two yachts launched by the German shipyard in February following the grand reveal of the 145m (475ft) Project Luminance , which is the eighth largest yacht to be built by Lürssen and has just successfully finished her sea trials  last week. 

With over 10 projects in-build currently, Lürssen is expected to deliver the 122m (400ft) superyacht PROJECT JAG later this year whilst the 114 (378ft) superyacht PROJECT COSMOS will be completed in 2024.

Oceanco has recently announced the huge success of its 90m/295ft mega yacht DAR at various awards shows, winning the  World Yacht Trophies Awards for Yacht of the Year  following the Cannes Yachting Festival 2018, and two more awards at the Monaco Yacht Show 2018 . Now, the team behind the exceptional motor yacht has provided insight into the design and technical aspects that have placed her in such a prestigious position.

Launched in September this year, superyacht DAR has also been known as Y717 and PROJECT SHARK during her construction owing to the contoured wings which from the air create an appearance reminiscent of a hammerhead shark. Extensive dark-tinted glazing gives the appearance of two-tier floors in some sections, and the colour matches the gloss black of the hull while silvery-white elements in the superstructure curve gracefully for a modern appearance that conceals staircases and side terraces.

The naval architecture from Oceanco and exterior styling by  Luiz DeBasto Designs won M/Y DAR Best Exterior Design and the Finest New Superyacht Award at the Monaco Yacht Show 2018 , with the five-decks providing extensive alfresco lounging, dining and sunbathing areas. Amenities on board include a sundeck forward Jacuzzi, a plunge pool with a waterfall on the main deck aft and room for a helipad. Pale furnishings and light-coloured teak decks set the tone for laid-back sunbathing and socialising with an abundance of sun umbrellas and canvas shades for all-day outdoor use.

The Owner chose Valentina Zannier from Nuvolari Lenard for the interior styling, which uses ivory and cream tones as well as fine detailing in contrast to the predominantly plain and dark steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The light and graceful contemporary styling are achieved using a range of natural materials, with sycamore fiddleback and maple bleached grey becoming the predominant wood types while Brazilian Carballo wood was used for detailing.

Metallic effects are used on walls and ceilings to manipulate the light, such as around the bar which has a blossom bas-relief wallpaper in-keeping with the theme of nature on board. The foyer staircase is one distinguishing space, where each step is back-lit and schools of 3D fish swim beside the recessed bannister up to the next level.

Luxury yacht DAR is capable of hosting up to 14 guests across 7 lavishly-appointed en-suite cabins, which include the Master stateroom, 2 VIP staterooms and 4 further guest cabins. To run efficiently, she has a crew of 31 to take care of all onboard systems and provide exceptional service.

In terms of her technical specifications, DAR is the first luxury yacht from the Netherlands to receive official Lloyd’s Register Integrated Bridge System (IBS) notation and designation. For power, a pair of MTU 20V4000 M73L engines providing 4,828 HP allow her to reach a maximum speed of 20 knots.

Following her recent appearances at the Mediterranean ‘s most prestigious yacht shows, M/Y DAR has joined other superyachts in the Palma harbour in the Balearic Islands for the last of the summer sunshine and to celebrate her victories.

Lürssen's 90m Superyacht ICE Listed for Sale

The 90m custom superyacht launched by Lürssen in 2005 has now been listed for sale by Greg Gheraia of Blackorange Yachts.

Originally launched as 'Air', and also known at the time as Project Rainbow, she was renamed ' Ice ' at her christening in 2005. Having had several owners, she was most recently sold in 2015 for €130,000,000

Built in  Lürssen 's shipyard in Bremen, Germany, Ice was one of the first vessels to be fitted with electrically-powered Azipod propellers, providing a far more comfortable ride for everyone on board, as well as reducing emissions and environmental impact during longer journeys.

She measures 90.1 metres in length, with a maximum draft of 5 metres and a beam of 15 metres. She has a deck material of teak and a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure. Her exterior design is by Tim Heywood Design, with her interior penned by  Terence Disdale . 

Ice has a top speed of around 18 knots, a cruising speed of 16 knots and a fuel capacity of 400,000 litres. She also boasts a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

In terms of accommodation, she can host up to 14 guests in 7 cabins. She also houses room for up to 27 crew members. She has a large swimming pool on the main deck (stern) in addition to the jacuzzi on the sun deck. Guests can also enjoy an array of entertainment spaces, a private cinema and a sauna.

On the third deck, she features a helipad; carrying an AgustaWestland AW169 helicopter with the call sign P4-ICE, which can transport up to ten passengers. 

She is currently asking for €120,000,000 with Blackorange Yachts.

Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

One person died and six people were missing after a luxury yacht sank Monday in Italy off the coast of Palermo, the capital of Sicily, after a sudden storm hit the area, according to Italy's coast guard.

The Bayesian, a 184-feet-long, British-registered sailboat, went down just before sunrise, capsizing its 22 passengers and killing one man, the ship's cook, t he coast guard said in a statement. On Monday, rescue teams identified the body as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

Of the 15 passengers rescued, eight were taken to a local hospital for treatment and were in stable condition, local news reported. A 1-year-old was among those rescued.

"We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Sicily and are in contact with the local authorities," the U.K Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY.

The people missing were American, British, and Canadian nationals.

What caused the Bayesian to sink?

The ship sank after unexpectedly strong storms recently dumped heavy rainfall, causing flooding and landslides, in parts of the country. Among those missing are British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and his daughter, a person familiar with the rescue operation told Reuters.

Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance who represented Lynch in a  U.S. trial , were among the missing. The wives of both men were also unaccounted for, said Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily.

"The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel," he told Reuters.

The yacht was owned by Lynch's family and had 22 people on board when it sank just before sunrise. The captain of a nearby ship told Reuters his crew rescued some survivors from a life raft, including three seriously injured.

"We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner said. The other boat "went flat on the water, and then down," he said.

"A little baby and the wife of the owner" were rescued, while the ship's owner and a child were missing, he said.

The boat was located 160 feet under the water and divers were deployed to inspect the wreck, according to the coast guard.

The search-and-rescue operation continued on Monday morning, a Reuters live feed showed . A helicopter and four coast guard ships were at the scene on Monday morning, according to the coast guard.

Bayesian had set sail off Amalfi Coast in July

Prosecutors in a nearby town have opened an investigation into the events leading up to the ship sinking.

The Bayesian set off for Palermo from Positano, a village on Italy's southern Amalfi Coast, on July 30, according to marinetraffic.com . It last docked in the town of Milazzo, in Messina, on Wednesday, according to VesselFinder.

Search resumes for British tech magnate and 5 others after yacht sinks off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Rescue teams and divers were returning to the site of a storm-sunken superyacht off Sicily on Tuesday to search for six people, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who are believed to be still trapped in the hull, 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

Divers were loading a rescue dinghy at the port of Porticello, near Palermo, after a first search Monday ended unsuccessfully. Fire rescue crews reported that divers were unable to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by debris that had shifted during the violent storm that toppled the luxury sailboat early Monday.

Fifteen people survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. One body has been recovered, officials said.

“Access was limited to the bridge, due to the difficulty represented by the presence of furnishings obstructing the divers’ passage,” the fire crews said in a statement.

The search was made particularly difficult because the ship was resting on the seabed at a depth of 50 meters, which limits the amount of time divers can be underwater, said fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari. As a result, the search is expected to take time, he told The Associated Press early Tuesday.

The 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian luxury yacht had been moored about a half-mile off Ponticello when a storm rolled in around 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, which had passed over the area.

Fifteen of the Bayesian’s 22 passengers and crew managed to escape, first onto a lifeboat and then by a nearby sailboat, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, that had also been moored offshore to ride out the storm, Karsten Borner, the captain of the Baden Powell, told reporters at the scene.

One body, belonging to the Bayesian’s chef, was recovered nearby.

Among those missing was Lynch , who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology. He was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp. His wife, Angela Bacares, survived.

The vacation appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal. Among those unaccounted for, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife. Also among the missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified at Lynch’s trial, and his wife.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast: 

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.  

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

In 15 erano già state portate in salvo, un corpo è stato ritrovato senza vita, gli altri sei ieri erano considerati dispersi.

Cosa avete visto? «L’imbarcazione è apparentemente integra. È appoggiata su un fianco, nel lato di dritta. Non presenta squarci, segni di urti. Abbiamo fatto una ispezione sia a prua sia a poppa. Ora tocca al gruppo di speleo sub di Roma e Sassari entrare proprio all’interno dello yacht. Noi possiamo immergersi fino a 50 metri, ma per legge possiamo entrare fino a quando l’uscita è visibile. Poi, tocca ai colleghi speleo sub che hanno una specializzazione specifica e attrezzature differenti, alcuni di loro hanno operato proprio nel caso della Costa Concordia».

Ma è vero che dagli oblò si riuscivano a vedere i cadaveri? «No, è una falsa notizia che è circolata. Dagli oblò siamo riusciti a vedere solo la condensa, detriti, bottiglie, residui».

Come è possibile che sia intatta l’imbarcazione? «Si stanno vagliando tutte le ipotesi, ma è difficile dare una risposta. Forse non hanno avuto il tempo di gestire la tromba d’aria, che è stata estremamente intensa, improvvisa e molto localizzata. Con vento fortissimo. Viene da pensare che uno yacht così grande possa comunque essere stato ribaltato. Ma hanno davvero avuto la sfortuna di trovarsi nel posto sbagliato al momento sbagliato».

Qualcuno potrebbe essere stato sbalzato fuori, lontano? «Stiamo svolgendo ricerche anche sulla costa con gli elicotteri e in mare con le moto d’acqua. Poiché però tutto è avvenuto di notte e la tromba d’aria è stata improvvisa presupponiamo che diverse persone stessero all’interno».

Il corpo del cuoco come lo avete recuperato? «Il nostro intervento è arrivato a una profondità di 48,4 metri. Una prima squadra (formata da tre uomini più uno che fa assistenza ai soccorritori) identifica il corpo e lo fissa per metterlo in sicurezza, poi però deve risalire, e interviene una seconda squadra per il recupero vero e proprio. Questo avviene perché ci sono i tempi da gestire: abbiamo 11 minuti a disposizione, considerando però anche i 4 minuti di discesa. Quindi una volta localizzato e agganciato il “target” poi devi risalire e interviene la seconda squadra. Così abbiamo fatto anche in questo caso, il corpo era sul lato di poppa, all’aperto».

Continuano senza sosta, fin dalle prime ore di questa mattina, le operazioni di ricerca dei dispersi a seguito del naufragio dello yacht britannico a vela Bayesian, affondato poco prima dell’alba del 19 agosto per via di una violenta tromba d’aria che ha creato danni lungo la fascia costiera di Porticello (Palermo).

“Le operazioni di ricerca, condotte incessantemente per tutta la giornata di ieri e di oggi, proseguono - si legge in una nota della Guardia Costiera - con l’impiego di cinque motovedette della Capitaneria di Palermo, Termini Imerese e Porticello, un elicottero della Base Aeromobili Guardia Costiera di Catania, i sommozzatori dei Nuclei Subacquei Guardia Costiera di Napoli e Messina oltre a personale, unità navali e speleo sub dei Vigili del Fuoco, di un elicottero dell’Aeronautica Militare e dei Carabinieri. I sommozzatori stanno valutando la fattibilità per entrare in sicurezza nel relitto, operazione resa complicata dalla profondità e dalla posizione dello scafo adagiato sul fondale a circa 50 metri, a mezzo miglio dal porto di Porticello. “Al momento - conclude la nota - non risultano tracce di inquinamento da idrocarburi”.

I dispersi sono l’imprenditore inglese, Mike Lynch, e la figlia Hannah, il presidente della Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, e la moglie, il legale di Lynch, Chris Morvillo, e sua moglie, Nada Morvillo.

Quindici le persone tratte in salvo subito dopo il naufragio dello yacht, mentre ieri è stato recuperato il corpo di una vittima: si tratta di un membro dell’equipaggio del Bayesian, il cuoco nato in Canada ma con passaporto di Antigua e Barbuda. Secondo quanto accertato dalla Capitaneria di Porto che sta conducendo le indagini coordinate dalla procura di Termini Imerese, a bordo della nave a vela Bayesian c’erano 10 membri dell’equipaggio e 12 passeggeri.

Lo scafo del veliero Bayesian è integro e l’albero maestro non ha lesioni, almeno per i primi 50 metri. Sono i primi dettagli che emergono dall’ispezione dei sommozzatori dei vigili del fuoco, impegnati a Porticello, nel Palermitano, provenienti da Cagliari, Sassari e Roma. I sub sono al lavoro da questa mattina e lavorano a una profondità di 49 metri: dalla prima ispezione inoltre emerge che l’albero maestro è perfettamente attaccato allo scafo, non ci sono segni di collisione con scogli o altre barche e il veliero è inclinato di 90 gradi a destra.

Le cabine si trovano nel ponte inferiore del veliero. Sono sei più la suite armatoriale che è a poppa. La ricerca dei 6 dispersi è molto difficile per i mobili e il materiale che ha invaso gli ambienti e impedisce di accedere alle cabine.

Per escludere squarci o cedimenti strutturali dello scafo i sommozzatori dovranno entrare per ispezionare dall’interno il lato appoggiato sul fondale sabbioso, ma già ora prende corpo l’ipotesi che, durante la tempesta sia entrata da poppa o da prua un’enorme quantità d’acqua in pochissimo tempo, provocando l’impennata dello scafo che, come raccontano più sopravvissuti, «in pochi secondi si è impennato ed è affondato». La barca è affondata in un minuto, lo conferma il video dell’impianto di sorveglianza di una villa che inquadrava il golfo.

Esperto di “rescue”, il naufragio del Bayesian è senza precedenti

L’affondamento di una imbarcazione con la stazza del megayacht Bayesian avvenuto al largo delle coste siciliane in una situazione di maltempo è da considerarsi «senza precedenti». Lo ha detto ai media del Regno Unito l’esperto di salvataggi in mare Matthew Schanck, presidente del Maritime Search and Rescue Council. “È una sorta di fatto senza precedenti per una imbarcazione di quelle dimensioni, certificata e utilizzata a fini commerciali, subire un evento così significativo in condizioni meteorologiche che erano piuttosto severe a detta di tutti, ma che avrebbero dovuto essere entro i limiti della nave stessa”, ha detto Schanck.

Sub dei Vigili del fuoco: il «veliero appare integro e senza squarci»

«Il veliero è adagiato sul fondo su un fianco, appare integro e senza squarci». Così l’ispettore del Nucleo sommozzatori dei Vigili del fuoco di Palermo Marco Tilotta parlando delle ricerche dei dispersi. «Il nostro obiettivo primario è riuscire a penetrare nella imbarcazione, ma non sarà semplice vista la profondità a 50 metri».

Impossibile vedere i dispersi attraverso oblò

I team dei sommozzatori dei vigili del fuoco sono al lavoro alla ricerca dei 6 dispersi dopo l’inabissamento di ieri dell’imbarcazione al largo di Porticello a Palermo. Le squadre sono composte da due operatori specializzati speleo che hanno un tempo di permanenza in profondità di 12 minuti prima della risalita e il cambio continuo con un successivo team.

Si stanno pianificando le operazioni per l’apertura sul relitto di accessi più agevoli per la penetrazione all’interno, mentre si procede con difficoltà all’accesso verso le cabine dove è possibile ipotizzare, vista l’ora del naufragio, la presenza dei dispersi.

È impossibile verificare la loro presenza all’interno attraverso gli oblò. Continuano parallelamente le ricerche in superficie nell’area del naufragio anche con elicottero e imbarcazione dei vigili del fuoco.

Il racconto dei superstiti all’ambasciatore

Lo sguardo fisso nel buio verso la zona di mare dove si è inabissato il veliero Bayesian, portando con sé sette persone, tra cui il marito Mike Lynch e la figlia diciottenne Hannah ancora dispersi, in quindici sono riusciti a salvarsi mentre il corpo del cuoco è stato recuperato dai sommozzatori. È la toccante immagine di Angela Bacares, la donna, adagiata su una sedia a rotelle, ieri sera è rimasta per diverso tempo immobile sulla terrazza del Domina-Zagarella resort, la struttura che sta ospitando i sopravvissuti al naufragio, a osservare quel tratto di mare. In una zona riservata, i sopravvissuti poi hanno raccontato all’ambasciatore britannico Hon Lord Llewellyn e al console Richard Brown, che li hanno raggiunti in hotel, i momenti drammatici vissuti col mare in tempesta mentre lo yacht affondava. A loro è stato riservato un lungo applauso dai turisti che stanno soggiornando nella struttura, a Santa Flavia (Palermo), quando il personale ha comunicato che qualsiasi iniziativa di intrattenimento sarebbe stata annullata come segno di solidarietà. Avendo perso tutto quel che avevano portato a bordo, il personale del Domina ha procurato abiti e indumenti ai superstiti, che vengono assistiti nel massimo riserbo. L’imbarcazione, affondata proprio di fronte al resort, risulta intestata alla società Revtom, registrata sull’isola di Man, la cui amministratrice sarebbe proprio la moglie del tycoon ancora disperso, Angela Bacares.

Ambasciatore britannico: «Invio ispettori normale»

«È una tragedia, sono venuto dall’ambasciata con i miei colleghi per sostenere e cercare di aiutare i cittadini britannici coinvolti in questo incidente. Vorrei esprimere loro la mia solidarietà. Stamattina ho incontrato il prefetto, la Guardia Costiera e i Vigili del Fuoco, ieri ho incontrato anche il viceprefetto, per offrire il mio supporto nello svolgimento delle indagini e per ringraziarli per quanto stanno facendo». Così l’ambasciatore del Regno Unito in Italia, Edward Llewellyn, parlando con i giornalisti all’uscita dell’Hotel Zagarella di Santa Flavia, dopo avere incontrato i superstiti del naufragio dello yacht Bayesian, avvenuto ieri a Porticello. “Ho parlato con i sopravvissuti - prosegue l’ambasciatore - le indagini sono condotte dalle autorità italiane, noi abbiamo mandato i nostri ufficiali da parte del Regno Unito. L’invio di ispettori per le verifiche è qualcosa che facciamo normalmente quando una nave britannica viene coinvolta in un incidente: fanno il loro lavoro al pari dei colleghi italiani. Ci sono diverse persone sotto shock, la situazione è particolarmente toccante”, conclude l’ambasciatore.

Per capire le ragioni della tragedia della Bayesian “sarà fondamentale verificare la posizione della chiglia retrattile, controllare se fosse stata sollevata oppure no” perché la differenza in termini di stabilità è sostanziosa. Senza dimenticare che “la proporzione fra l’altezza dell’albero, oltre 72 metri dalla linea di galleggiamento, e la lunghezza della barca, di 56 metri, era un po’ troppo elevata per una barca da crociera seppur pesante (ca 550 tonnellate) ma con un basso potere di raddrizzamento trasversale relativo e di conseguenza era una barca con un piano velico molto spinto, estremizzato in altezza, con criticità in certe situazioni estreme come questa”. Lo sottolinea all’Adnkronos Paolo Cori , uno dei maggiori esperti al mondo di barche a vela e da regata e progettista di superyacht “con una grandissima attenzione alla sicurezza”. “La Bayesian - ricorda - aveva una deriva mobile, che cambia il pescaggio da circa 4 a oltre 9 metri e mezzo”, in questa seconda posizione “si ha più stabilità trasversale, necessaria per reggere una velatura da quasi 3 mila metri quadri” ma anche utile in situazioni come quelle registrate all’alba di ieri al largo di Porticello. “Con una chiglia di 9 metri forse la Bayesan si sarebbe inclinata ma senza ribaltarsi” sottolinea il progettista aggiungendo che sarà cruciale verificare “magari se c’erano anche oblo’ aperti sullo scafo o vetrate del salone che si sono rotte”. “In ogni caso scuffiando presumibilmente a 90 gradi la barca è andata velocemente a fondo imbarcando acqua anche dagli accessi al sottocoperta e chi era nelle cabine purtroppo poco ha potuto fare per salvarsi. Penso che sia difficile per un comandante prevedere una cosa del genere” osserva ponendo l’accento anche sul fatto che “purtroppo i regolamenti a volte omologano le barche a deriva abbassata” e quindi in situazione di maggiore stabilità.

I genitori della bimba superstite lasciano l’ospedale

I genitori della piccola Sophie, la bimba di un anno sopravvissuta al naufragio del veliero britannico a Porticello (Palermo) hanno appena lasciato l’ospedale dei Bambini di Palermo. Ad accompagnarli fuori dall’ospedale un giovane funzionario dell’Ambasciata britannica in Italia. Charlotte Golunski, 35 anni e James Emslie, 36 anni, sono stati portati fuori coperti da una giacca per non essere ripresi dalle telecamere e i giornalisti. Il van che li ha prelevati dall’ospedale è entrato da una entrata secondaria. La coppia sta raggiungendo l’hotel Domina Zagarella di Santa Flavia dove sono ospitati gli altri superstiti del naufragio.

L’imbarcazione è affondata tra le 4 e le 5 della mattina di lunedì 19 agosto, durante un violento temporale. Sono state salvate 15 persone. I dispersi al momento sono sei, tutti passeggeri che stavano trascorrendo la vacanza in Sicilia.

Otto delle 15 persone salvate sono state portate in ospedale. Nelle ricerche sono impegnate quattro mezzi navali della guardia costiera, un elicottero della guardia costiera e uno dei vigili del fuoco, i sommozzatori dei vigili del fuoco e il nucleo subacquei della guardia costiera di Messina.

L’imbarcazione, che batte bandiera inglese, si trova a 49 metri di profondità.

«Per due secondi ho perso la bimba in mare, poi l’ho subito riabbracciata tra la furia delle onde. L’ho tenuta forte, stretta a me, mentre il mare era in tempesta. In tanti urlavano. Per fortuna si è gonfiata la scialuppa di salvataggio e in 11 siamo riusciti a salirci sopra», ha raccontato all’Ansa Charlotte, la mamma di 35 anni rimasta in balia delle onde insieme alla figlia Sofia di un anno. La donna era a bordo della Bayesan, la barca naufragata al largo di Porticello, insieme al marito e ai colleghi di una società di Londra e di alcuni parenti. Adesso si trova all’ospedale dei Bambini nella stanza della figlia.

Il Bayesan , l’imbarcazione affondata a largo di Porticello nel palermitano battente bandiera del Regno Unito, era una elegante barca a vela di 56 metri con stazza lorda di 473 tonnellate, costruita dal cantiere Perini navi Viareggio nel febbraio 2008, ristrutturata nel 2020, e progettata per viaggi di lusso.

L’area dei ponti era di 436 metri quadrati e le sei cabine occupavano un’area di 143 metri quadrati. A bordo, dice il costruttore, potevano essere ospitati il proprietario e 11 ospiti oltre ai 10 membri dell’equipaggio.

Bayesan è costruita con uno scafo e una sovrastruttura in alluminio, con ponti in teak. Alimentato da due motori diesel Mtu a 8 cilindri da 965 CV navigava a 12 nodi e raggiungeva una velocità massima di 15 nodi. La barca aveva il secondo albero più alto al mondo e il più grande albero in alluminio di 75 metri.
