Hi Amanda, The boat was great. The staff were too. Marin in particular. He was super knowledgeable and we felt in good hands. I'd say that maybe a very slight comment is that a Croatian crew and cooking etc is always going to be a little more "Eastern European" than, say an Italian crew. This is not to say it was lacking, just a little different and perhaps requires a little more communication. Thanks for everything. Was really a wonderful holiday I'd love to do a boat trip again. France is another top destination for European sailing, and it also hosts one of the most favored mooring spots in the sailing community. The breathtaking French coastline is just part of the story, as you can spend days or weeks exploring the country’s vast network of channels and rivers.

Paris is, of course, a favorite destination for tourists—maritime or otherwise. But there’s much more to see in the area, and there’s sure to be something for everyone.

A notable example is Omaha Beach, where the Allies began one of the most vicious battles of World War Two. The scars of war remain in the form of massive shell craters and busted-up concrete bunkers, which still dot the landscape as if the battle happened yesterday.

But if war isn’t quite your speed, there’s another French coastal destination that might suit you well. It’s the isle of Corsica, and it’s the gorgeous birthplace of famed French leader Napoleon. The isle sports crystal-clear water, beaches, and ancient architecture.

Who can think of a sailing vacation in Europe and not picture Italy? The country, located on the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the most beautiful sailing destinations in Europe. The food, the music—it’s all there and ready for you to immerse yourself into.

Much of Italy hasn’t changed much in centuries. Of course, that also includes Venice. The waterlogged city of Venice is the most famous canal city in the world, and it has remained largely untouched for years.

And though you can’t technically take your boat through the canals, you can hire a local to row you through for an authentic experience. And if Venice isn’t your speed, try the breathtaking Amalfi coast and its picturesque buildings. Monaco is another beautiful city to visit, and it has plentiful modern marina space.

4. St. Petersburg, Russia

A short trip up the Neva River leads you to Russia’s most ‘European’ city. With architecture and geography more on par with Sweden than Moscow, this city is a gem and a great destination for sailing.

Often considered Russia’s most beautiful city, St. Petersburg survived much of the nation’s turbulent history and retained its stunning Czarist Russian architecture. The river, which has modern marina spaces, is the gateway from the EU to Russia.

St. Petersburg is also a highly affordable place to visit, as prices there are often half of what you’d pay in an EU country. The locals are friendly, and the city is extremely safe, even by Western European standards. Additionally, there are numerous tourist attractions, including the historic Russian cruiser Aurora.

St Petersburg is also a short jump away from Finland by sea, so you can tour countries such as Sweden and Norway on the same trip. Just be sure to follow all the declaration and visa rules, as Russia can be tricky due to the currency and language barriers.

If you’re already in the area (for example, headed down the Neva River from St. Petersburg), it’s a great idea to stop in Finland and see the stunning landscape and architecture. This Northern European country is known for its beautiful riverside architecture—which you can pull your sailboat right up to in many places.

Finland is also one of the few destinations where you can see the Northern Lights without taking your boat through, particularly treacherous waters. That said, the Baltic Sea isn’t known to be particularly friendly during the winter.

Upon arrival in Finland, you’ll be greeted by rows of colorful houses and some of the friendliest people in Europe. During the summer, the days are extremely long, and the sun never sets completely. This is an incredible experience, and you can have it from the deck of your boat in one of Finland’s many coastal hideaways.

Germany is one of Europe’s most interesting countries, and it’s home to world-renowned food, drink, and annual festivals. How cool would it be to throw an Oktoberfest party on your sailboat? Just head up the Rhine river to Duisburg or Frankfurt, and you can.

Germany has beautiful landscapes and historic architecture, along with some of the most advanced shipbuilding in the world. The country also hosts ancient ruins, and who can forget the world-class beer and chocolate?

Germany also has a tumultuous past—the scars of which, such as the Berlin Wall, remain and are a must-see for any history buff. Germany usually isn’t a top destination on sailing vacation lists, but it should be because modern Germany has a whole lot to offer to sailors and plenty of sights to see.

7. The Netherlands

Specifically, we’re referring to Amsterdam. This beautiful city in Holland is the most picturesque and interesting coastal city in Europe. You can access it directly from the water, with no complex rivers to navigate. Additionally, Amsterdam is home to modern marinas and amazing accommodations.

Amsterdam is divided by an intricate series of rivers and canals. It’s a very boat-friendly city, but you can’t bring your full-size cursing sailboat everywhere. Nonetheless, it’s a popular destination for sailors from all over the world.

During the summer, the weather is perfect for exploring the city’s endless streets and historic buildings. After enjoying dutch food, drink, and entertainment, you can walk all the way back to your boat for the night or simply hop on the city’s fantastic public transportation system.

And while you’re in Holland, you can see the world-famous windmills and rolling fields of wildflowers. It truly is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and also one of the most modern.

Are you looking for southerly warmth and endless history? Greece is the country to see, and there’s no shortage of either in the area. Greece is the cradle of western civilization, and the nation’s stunning ruins and beautiful scenery are unsurpassed anywhere else in the world.

The majority of Greece borders the water, which is great news for sailors. There are dozens of marinas and yacht clubs located around the country, including many ancient cities that are well worth exploring. The islands that surround the country are also the perfect Mediterranean vacation spots—out of the way and teeming with authentic Greek food and culture.

And while you’re in the region, don’t forget to check out the tiny island nation of Cyprus. This storied country is located in the eastern Mediterranean and home to some of the most beautiful sailing in the world.

The rocky shoreline of Portugal is famous for its unique rock formations and long, sandy beaches. The unique architectural style in the country resembles that of Spain, though it has a Portuguese touch that’s easy to distinguish.

1. The French Riviera  

Perhaps the most glamorous seaside destination in Europe, the French Riviera , or Côte d’Azur, draws the sailor and sunseeker alike. Picture-postcard villages and chic beach resorts line the coast from the cosmopolitan glitz of Saint-Tropez and Cannes to the unspoiled beauty of Port-Cros.  

The winter resort city of Nice, with its ample sunshine, white sand beaches, and special events such as the Cannes Film Festival attract a who’s who of international glitterati. West along the coastline, past the jet-set destination of Saint-Tropez, the island of Porquerolles awaits, with a peaceful escape from the bustle of the mainland.  

2. Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy  

Sardinia’s Emerald Coast is a playground for the jet set, and its dramatic, unspoiled coastline and luxury marinas draw yacht folk from all over. The marine grottoes of Cala Gonone and the rock formations of Capo Testa, shaped by centuries of sea winds, are favorite attractions.  

While the quaint towns of Carloforte and Castelsardo provide local color, the exclusive Yacht Club Costa Smeralda offers dining, a clubhouse, and spa services. Sailors can explore the tiny islands of the Maddalena archipelago or the white sandy beaches and rocky cliffs along the Gallura coast. Tranquil sunset viewing turns to fine dining and sizzling nightlife in the exclusive restaurants, clubs, and discos of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo.  

3. The Greek Islands

Surrounded by its “wine-dark” seas and thousands of islands, ancient Greece prospered with a maritime culture that became the cradle of Western civilization.  

There is plenty left to explore, from the natural beauty of its uninhabited isles to the beaches and cosmopolitan nightlife that have made islands such as Mykonos into global destinations. Yachters can stop for an archaeological exploration on Rhodes or Delos, a night on the tiles in the tavernas of Athens, to the nightclub scene of Mykonos, Corfu, and Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.  

The adventure starts in the ancient seaport of Piraeus, in southwestern Athens. Zea Marina is one of the finest, full-service marinas in the Mediterranean, offering 670 berths for vessels up to 492 feet.  

4. The Bahamas  

The 700 islands of The Bahamas begin at Bimini, just 45 miles off the coast of Miami, and stretch 500 miles southwest to the islands of Great Inagua and Little Inagua, neighboring the Turks and Caicos Islands.  

The Bahamas were made famous by Ian Fleming (the islands featured in the James Bond spy thrillers Casino Royale , Thunderball , The Spy Who Loved Me , Never Say Never Again , and License to Kill ). But they’ve been a haven for sailors and swashbucklers since the 18th century.  

They’re a paradise below the waterline, too, for sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Palm-lined beaches, nature preserves, world-class golf courses, and colorful Colonial-style villas welcome seafarers ashore.  

5. The Florida Keys  

The Florida Keys arc southwest from Virginia Key in the Atlantic Ocean (just south of Miami Beach) to Loggerhead Key in Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote seven-island archipelago in the Gulf of Mexico, 70 miles off Key West. The islands are easy to navigate. Cruising in the Keys can mean a leisurely and scenic sail through the shallow interconnected basins of Florida Bay or a more adventurous trip out on the open waters of the Atlantic.    

But it’s not all plain sailing. Mariners can drop anchor in a coral cove to swim, snorkel, or fish, or drop anchor in Islamorada, the “Sportfishing Capital of the World.”  Of course, a trip to the Keys is not complete without a visit to continental America’s southernmost city, Key West, otherwise known as the Conch Republic—a place described as “close to perfect and far from normal,” where flip-flops are the official footwear and every day the sunset is applauded.  

6. The British Virgin Islands  

One of the world’s great sailing destinations, the BVI comprises four main islands—Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda. There are 50 more islands and cays, including Necker Island (Sir Richard Branson’s private paradise) and Salt Island, home of the wreck of the RMS Rhone, and hundreds of tiny palm-lined islets, sandbars, and rocky outcroppings to navigate, bounded by the beautiful Sir Francis Drake Channel, named after the Elizabethan admiral.   

There are countless draws for mariners: calm currents, steady trade winds, and protected bays. I had an amazing time on the Croatia tour! It’s such a chilled laid back tour compared to some others but still had plenty of opportunities to party if you wanted too! There’s so much to see and do in Croatia and the tour covers a good variety to begin with!! Kayaking in Dubrovnik and partying in Hvar have got to be some of my favourite highlights! But the captains dinner and wine tasting in Trstenik was so much fun with the incredible group I was with! We certainly know how to throw a party!! Only thing I would have loved more to make this trip more amazing would be to have slightly longer on some of the islands, just because there’s so much to explore and so much to see! Becca is an incredible tour guide, so fun and so knowledgeable!! She interacted with every single person in the group (there was a total of 23!!) and she made sure everyone was comfortable and happy though out the tour!! Most importantly she was always there the next morning after a heavy night with the vitamins and information on the swim stop!!!

Overall a great experience, went to many lovely places, awesome crew and the cooked meals were incredible. But the ship was not the one that was advertised and many people weren't happy about that. I had a downstairs cabin which was pretty small and basic (and bathroom had a bad smell), the ones upstairs were much nicer yet they paid the same price.

5-day Dubrovnik to Split one-way cruise - Classic Plus above-deck, 20-35s

Sailing is the best way to do Croatia as it’s too hot to spend all day on land. The tour felt cut short with the very early arrival into port in Split (before 12pm on Friday) and it would have been nice to have a few more hours to swim before docking. Essentially the tour was done a full day early. Breakfast was basic, lunch was pleasant, the bar costs seemed low but the tracking system was questionable. The port stops were lovely, though it would have been nice to have a little more guidance. The biggest letdown was how passengers were disbursed as we were placed with 6 couples who previously knew each other and had already spent several days on the ship prior - making it difficult to infiltrate socially. It would be nice if there was some more thoughtfulness put into how groups were placed as it did change the experience. All that’s said, Nichola was a hoot and being on the roof deck and stopping for swims was exceptional.
