Among the top-selling long range cruisers of her era, SUZY BELLE has been luxuriously updated and meticulously maintained. A large aft deck/cockpit with built in seating leads into a spacious salon through double doors, or allows easy access with built in steps to an integrated swim platform. Covered walk around decks with bulwarks and a Portuguese bridge forward make line handling simple and provide safety at sea. The foredeck has a built in seat ahead of the Portuguese bridge, and easy access to the double capstan windlass with a substantial anchoring system and ground tackle.

The main salon and galley are adjoined with abundant built in seating, dining area, large opening windows, on deck head, granite galley counters, pantry, and with exceptional headroom provide a very spacious feeling. Moving three steps up and forward is the raised pilothouse, with built in seating, hinged table, Stidd helm seat, opening port and starboard doors, chart and additional storage areas and great visibility. From an inside staircase on the starboard side of the Pilothouse there is access to a huge flybridge with a Stidd seat, built in seating, vast storage areas, tender and davit.

A curved staircase from the pilothouse leads to the two guest staterooms, including a large guest stateroom with upper and lower berths to port, large guest head and shower to starboard. The VIP centerline queen berth stateroom in located further forward with ensuite access to guest head.

The Selene 60 is a completely new design from an entirely new mold with the Selene Deep Hull™ structure resulting in a raised sheer and a significantly higher deck which generates increased headroom in the cabins and the engine room. The Selene 60 is a perfect transitional yacht between the successful Selene 53/54 and Selene 62/66 series. She features a full-height engine room, a separate crew’s quarters aft with a transom door. Ocean Alexander 60 Trawler

Alexander Chueh was a Taiwanese hardware manufacturer with no plans to become a boatbuilder until he acquired a boatyard as payment of a debt in the 1970s. However, he threw himself into his new business with the same dedication to detail that had made him a successful entrepreneur.

Over the following decades, Ocean Alexander carved a niche as a builder of fine yachts, and certainly one of those that turned around American attitudes toward boats from the Far East. Chueh quickly signed yacht designer Ed Monk, Jr., who had a reputation for tough and seaworthy yachts in the Pacific Northwest, and their first offering was, no surprise, a sturdy trawler.

Now run by Alex’s son, John Chueh, Ocean Alexander has gone back to its roots with the new 60-foot Trawler Extended Cruiser. If you think that the “extended” means it’s designed for voyaging, well, you’re halfway right. It’s certainly aimed at the offshore cruising market, but it’s also a stretch version of the already popular Ocean Alexander 54 Trawler.

Once again the lines are by Monk, and one glance tells you this yacht is an offshore cruiser, from the no-nonsense flared bow and Portuguese bridge to the absence of the frills and design affectations found on marina queens. Walkaround decks on each side are made secure by high bulwarks capped by stainless steel rails, husky rubbing strakes handle the occasional piling, and the bridgedeck extends full beam to protect the salon and main deck from both sun and rain.

Underwater, the 60 Trawler has come a long way from those early Monk warped-plane hull lines, and sports what Ocean Alexander calls the “S-bow,” with a melon-seed-shape, rather than a round one. We didn’t have enough seas on our test run to challenge the S-bow, but the company says that the shape dampens pitch and lowers resistance up to five percent at both displacement and semi-displacement speeds.

With a fine Florida day, we did all of our on-water testing from the flying bridge, which, when combined with the big boat deck, is an enormous living space. The helm area is forward, cosseted behind a full coaming that’s topped by a venturi for wind and spray protection. Two pedestal chairs are behind the instrument console, a black-finished fiberglass pod capable of handling dual monitors plus ancillary electronics. Behind this working area is an L-settee with a table, and the entire helm is protected by a nicely finished fiberglass hardtop that could easily be fitted with a soft enclosure. The only jarring feature in the area was a rise in the sole by the skipper’s foot, to accommodate the stairs below.

The boat deck is two steps below the bridge level, and it is vast. Fully surrounded by double stainless steel rails that allow you to walk forward along the helm area (a perfect place to stand while docking with a handheld remote), it could easily handle a large RIB plus several water toys, all launched with the Steelhead 1500 davit. There’s also a minigalley with sink, fridge, and Kenyon grill.

Outdoor living is a recurring theme on the Ocean Alexander 60 and the afterdeck benefits from the added length, although some has been donated to the salon as well. Covered by the overhang, it is unusual because it was left open. Most builders feel compelled to create some sort of built-in settee or seating area, which then defeats an owner who wants to have loose chairs and tables…or nothing.

But there’s no absence of outdoor seating, because the OA engineers moved that settee forward and tucked it behind the expanded Portuguese bridge, creating two settees separated by a table. This would, I think, be a very pleasant place to sit while at anchor and enjoying something with an umbrella in it.

Inside, the 60 Trawler salon is very pleasant, but clearly designed for the realities of cruising, from the watertight Diamond Sea-Glaze Dutch door with dogging latches to the teak-and-holly sole (because you’ll probably be tramping through with squishy shoes). There’s an L-settee to port as well as a corner cabinet with pop-up TV, and a pair of loose bucket chairs that can be used with the absolutely gorgeous teak folding table. Big windows surround the area for sit-down visibility, and the overhead sports a pair of sturdy handrails.

The galley is up two steps, forward, and open to the salon above the sink. A full-sized Sub-Zero fridge with two freezer drawers is camouflaged behind burled panels and our test boat was upgraded from the Force 10 propane cooktop to a four-burner Gaggenau cooktop with oven. Under the counter is a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher and, at eye level, a microwave. Counter space, with Silestone tops, is at a premium, although there is a food-prep area just outside the galley to starboard.

Three steps above the galley is the pilothouse, with the usual settee and table overlooking the helm and instrument panel, which is once again a black fascia large enough for a full array of goodies. A Stidd pedestal chair is behind a teak steering wheel that qualifies as a work of art.

I found an interesting contradiction at the helm because, after the dogging doors and offshore sensibilities elsewhere, all the horizontal space around the helm is padded and upholstered. Though there’s plenty of space to lay out a chart, I’d be wary of sticking dividers into this supple material or trying to draw a penciled course on a pillowy surface. Ocean Alexander provided two chart drawers to port, so I guess the skipper is expected to use the settee table for any chart work. Or maybe OA trusts electronic chart plotters more than I.

A nice touch, on the other hand, is that, because the pilothouse helm is far enough forward, it allows a big screened hatch directly over the skipper’s chair, which would be great in balmy climes. And there are two handrails overhead for moving around in a seaway.

Stairs to port lead below, past a nicely labeled electrical panel protected by a Lucite cover for easy access. The VIP cabin is forward from the small foyer, with a queen-sized berth between twin burled pillars and raised to provide drawers below. The cabin has a private head with a surprisingly large shower stall.

Down three steps aft of the foyer is the master stateroom, which spans the full beam and has a queen-sized berth, again centered under a padded headboard with burled pillars. A bureau is to port, while the head is along the starboard side with a space-saving pocket door and a man-sized shower with a seat.

Just aft and down a couple of steps is a compartment that can be finished in several ways-for instance, as a crew compartment with a pair of bunks, accessed by stairs from the salon. In the case of our test boat, it was turned into a dressing-area-cum-laundry, with large cedar-lined hanging lockers, drawers, stacked Maytag washer and dryer, and even a U-Line fridge and mini-sink.

Once inside the engineroom, you’ll find more than ample room to walk around the twin 455-horsepower Cat C7s, a worthwhile upgrade from the standard single 300-horsepower John Deere. There’s a wide alley between the mains and you can get around behind them, although the single 12 kW Northern Lights generator outside the starboard engine is a bit tight. The compressors for the 76,000 Btu Cruisair a/c are outboard of the port engine, and a Delta-T blower system keeps the area well ventilated. Our test boat had been thoughtfully outfitted, including Keypower bow and stern thrusters, a 3,000-watt Prosine inverter and a Glendinning Cablemaster.

Underway, the 60 was pleasantly predictable and without surprises. The steering was light but positive, sight lines from the bridge and lower helm were above average, and, though we didn’t have any breaking seas to challenge us, she had a solid feel that I’m comfortable would translate into a nice sea boat. In close-quarters maneuvering, I made good use of the bow and stern thrusters because she has a fair amount of windage and we had crosswinds and an awkward slip.

Ocean Alexander engineers suggest that our top speed should have been around 14 knots at wideopen throttle, but we fell below that for reasons that should be mentioned. Every sailboat racer knows how much speed a freshly scrubbed bottom can add, and the 60 had some visible marine growth. We also ran in Florida’s St. Lucie River, which at times was only a few feet deeper than our draft, and this probably dragged our speed down by a knot as well.

In the end, however, the Ocean Alexander 60 Trawler Extended Cruiser proved to be a thoroughly likable addition to the world of cruising yachts. She’ll be an easy boat to shorthand with a husband-and-wife crew and, depending on her configuration, could provide space for kids or a captain. The new Krogen 60 Open continues to build on the success of the 50 Open and will feature the same open living concept first shown on the 50, which seamlessly joins the salon and galley area with the pilothouse. As a result of the volume and use of space of the 60 Open, a day head can be easily added in the pilothouse to enhance livability while on passage or on the hook. Belowdecks, the en suite master is placed amidships and features a king-size berth to take full advantage of the 60 Open’s 19-foot, 6-inch beam. Additional highlights include twin John Deere 200-hp 4045 diesels, transoceanic range yet an island-friendly draft of less than 6 feet, and several interior layout options including a three-stateroom, three-head layout with a convertible office area. Provisions for crew accommodations are also offered abaft the engine room.

Krogen 60 Open Design & Engineering

A walk-in, stand-up engine room houses twin John Deer diesels and the industry’s finest systems and equipment. When experienced cruisers explore a Kadey-Krogen engine room, it’s often what they don’t see that makes as significant of an impression as what they do see. For one, we do not overload our designs with untried and unreliable equipment. To us, reliability and safety far outweigh experimenting with some new unproven piece of technology. Then everything is laid out for accessibility and ease of maintenance. 

The Krogen 60 Open benefits from the same attention to weight distribution and utilization on reducing weight while maximizing strength. Hull construction includes use of American-made, Cook gelcoat. Hand-laid Knytex fiberglass construction with Corecell closed-cell PVC sandwich core is utilized in the topsides. Below the waterline you’ll find solid fiberglass with blister-resistant vinylester resin utilized on the first two laminates, with aramid fiber/FRP reinforcements.

The 10 Most-Exciting Yacht Debuts at the Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show. 

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.  

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north. 

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests. 

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million. 

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.
