Fidelis is a classic yacht originally designed by Knud Reimers in the 1930’s. She is triple planked Kauri, built in Auckland by Lidgards, launched in 1964 and famous for taking line honours in the 1966 Sydney Hobart, beating her nearest rival by a near-record margin of 17 hours 27 mins. She was purchased by Nigel Stoke in 1994 and raced in the 50th race with line honours in the Veteran Division. Fidelis was back again for the race to Hobart to celebrate 40 years of racing in 2006 and then most recently in 2016 to celebrate 50 years since the win in 1996, finishing 66th overall.
Now 55 years old she is back for the 75th in her 8th race to Hobart. She has competed and achieved wins in most of the major races around the Tasman and east coast of Australia. Stoke keeps her immaculate and has reassembled many of the crew from previous races.

Congratulations to Nigel Stoke and the crew of Fidelis for winning the Great Veterans Regatta on Sydney Harbor. This is Fidelis’ second Great Veterans in a row, also winning the Windward Trophy in 2022.
We asked Nigel for comment:
It was a great day on the harbour for all. Fidelis was 1 1/2 mins ahead at the finish but the top 3 were all within 2 mins – which delighted the handicapper!
I feel a bit self indulgent with the Windward Trophy – now the 6th or 7th time for Fidelis over nearly 30 years of Great Veterans…

Five decades after claiming line honours, the yacht will return to the blue water classic.
Our Sydney to Hobart race reporter Scott Rollinson caught up with the boat's skipper Nigel Stoke ahead of the long trip on Boxing Day.

Historical:
Australian Square Metre Association Australian Square Metre Association Australian Square Metre Association – Launched in New Zealand, Fidelis is Australia’s only 75sqm vessel. She was built in Auckland by Fred and Jim Lidgard. Inspired by the her visionary and owner Vic Speight. In keeping with traditional New Zealand building techniques of the time she was constructed with a triple skin Kauri. Her design was based on the lines of the 1936 Knud Reimers Square Metre Yacht Bacchant.
Known Racing Record
Nigel Stoke last raced Fidelis to Hobart in 2006, finishing PHS eighth overall. Beforehand, they joined the record entries for the 50th race in 1994, placing ninth in the 30 year division. A classic Kauri pine slimline yacht, she was designed by Knud Reimers and is famous for taking line honours in the 1966 Sydney Hobart when owned by Kiwi Jim Davern, who raced her to Hobart again in 1967, finishing second on line. Race again in 1969 and then under next owner, Peter Williams, in 1982. Took line honours in the 1966 Auckland Suva, 1967 Hobart Auckland the 1968 Wharingarei Noumea, 1979 Auckland Tonga and 1980 Tauranga to Port Vila races. She also cruised over 200,000nm. Nigel Stoke keeps her immaculate and has reassembled some of the crew from 2006.
Restoration:
Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders very first refit, Fidelis was one of the most famous yachts ever launched in New Zealand. Fidelis was extensively refitted by Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders in 1987 to transform her from a stripped out ocean racer to one of the fastest and most luxurious passage-makers of her day. Work included major interior and exterior modifications including new teak decks and a full repaint.

61ft Classic Racer/Cruiser ‘Fidelis’
This is a description for the first slide.
Fidelis is a boat with a stellar and sound provenance.
Her story is well documented through several books and many articles. Her sparkling race record began in New Zealand, and then as the line honours winner of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race in 1966. The race winning performance continues to this day with harbour sailing, another five completed S2H races, many trips to Lord Howe Island, and races to the Solomon Islands, Tasmania, Queensland and NZ. Although her race record is important she is a very stable and safe ocean sailing yacht. She remains a “Greyhound” but is equally at home in cruising mode and is an easily handled vessel!

Fidelis is built with a aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles from her 53,000 litre fuel tanks at cruising speed.
When not cruising Fidelis has onboard an incredible selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to connect with the waters around you. Principle among these are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If you enjoy diving you'll appreciate the diving equipment and the PADI certified professionals on board. In addition there are two SEABOBs providing agile cruising and diving. If that isn't enough Fidelis also features wakeboards, kayaks, kneeboards, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment. Fidelis features two tenders, but leading the pack is a 6.4m/21' Castoldi Tender to transport you in style.
