Officer ‘motorboated’ subordinate at promotion ceremony, retires after guilty plea

A former Louisiana National Guard officer was allowed to retire after a general court-martial convicted him of charges stemming from “motorboating” a subordinate soldier during an informal promotion ceremony while deployed to Jordan in May 2021, Army Times has confirmed.

Capt. Billy Joe Crosby Jr., a logistics officer who was overseas with the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team during its recent deployment, was initially charged with abusive sexual contact and conduct unbecoming an officer, according to court records obtained by Army Times. Crosby was the officer-in-charge of an outpost in Jordan.

Maj. Jessica Rovero, a spokesperson for the command overseeing the trial, told Army Times in a statement that Crosby’s “behavior is not in line with the Army values.”

Rovero added that “multiple Soldiers immediately reported the behavior, and Crosby pled guilty at trial.”

The guilty plea came with strings attached, though.

The officer struck a deal that erased the abusive sexual contact charge. He pled guilty to assault consummated by battery — a non-sexual offense — and conduct unbecoming, records reveal.

Crosby, a prior enlisted soldier who participated in the 1989 invasion of Panama, was confined for 30 days. The plea deal also prevented the judge from dismissing him from the Army, which would have kept him from collecting his retirement.

A Louisiana National Guard spokesperson, Lt. Col. Noel Collins, confirmed that Crosby retired March 31 after completing his confinement and returning home.

Crosby did not respond to an emailed request for comment.

What did Crosby do?

When he learned that the junior soldier was selected for promotion, Crosby reportedly announced to her twice that he intended to “motorboat” her during her promotion ceremony because the Army Combat Uniform’s chest-placed rank patch was intended for such actions.

An NCO witnessed both statements, according to a motion filed by prosecutors.

Prosecutors described “motorboating” as “when a person places his or her face between a [woman]’s breasts and shakes his or her head back and forth while making sounds resembling a boat motor.”

Weeks before the assault, Crosby also told the NCO that he wanted to bring the junior soldier with him on a driving trip to another base in Jordan. The NCO told investigators that Crosby requested the soldier’s company because “he liked looking at her tits.”

The junior soldier told Crosby the day before the assault that she did not want a promotion ceremony.

But during work the following day, according to a prosecution motion, Crosby “approached [the junior soldier], told her to stand up, placed the rank in front of her chest, leaned in the grab the rank with his teeth...then placed his face between [the junior soldier]’s breasts...[and] vigorously moved his head from side to side between [her] breasts while still holding the rank with his teeth.”

It’s not clear when the crime was reported, nor is it clear who reported it, but court documents indicate that agents from the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division were interviewing witnesses within two weeks of the incident.

Crosby, who initially declared he would plead not guilty, changed his plea after negotiating a deal that reduced the charges and protected his retirement. The removal of the abusive sexual contact charge, which was dismissed as part of the deal, also meant that he did not have to register as a sex offender.

Although the deal took away the possibility of an other-than-honorable discharge and reduced his maximum confinement to 120 days, the judge only sentenced Crosby to 30 days and did not direct a reprimand, fines or forfeitures.

Crosby’s brigade had other disciplinary issues during its 2021 mobilization, which saw most of the unit sent to the Middle East. Some other elements of the brigade went to the federally controlled mission supporting officials at the U.S.-Mexico border.

A Louisiana Guard cavalry troop operating in south Texas was temporarily disbanded after widespread issues with sexual harassment, discipline and command climate. The state returned its troops from the border mission a month ahead of schedule after two soldiers died in alcohol-related incidents, though a state spokesperson said the move was unrelated to the problems the units had faced.

He's a sweetheart of the small screen, but Dec Donnelly's TV presence took a sordid turn after an appearance on Celebrity Juice.

The ITV2 show known for its raunchy antics saw the Geordie host challenged with 'motorboating' a middle-aged woman wearing just a chef's hat and an apron around the waist.

Dec looked mortified when approached by the topless lady, and so did every other guest on the show.

Show host Keith Lemon was parodying Donnelly's own game, Win The Ads, from his and co-presenter Ant McPartlin's award-winning show Ant & Dec Saturday Night Takeaway.

'Get the motorboating prize,' Lemon shouted, before the blonde woman emerged in all her naked glory, with 'motorboat' and an arrow pointing down towards her chest.

It finally looked as though Dec was going to take one for the team and perform the rude task.

Ant's experience seemed to be far less traumatic, as he only had a life time's supply of fish fingers dropped on his head.

A U.K. man sent unwanted nudes. He’s going to prison under a new law.

The first person to be sentenced for sharing unsolicited explicit photos of his genitals in England and Wales is a 39-year-old man from Essex, England.

Nicholas Hawkes was sentenced to 66 weeks in prison, the Crown Prosecution Service said Tuesday, after sending photos of his erect penis to a 15-year-old girl and an adult woman through messaging service WhatsApp on Feb. 9.

The woman took screenshots of the image on WhatsApp and reported Hawkes to local police in Essex on the same day.

Hawkes, who was already a convicted sex offender, was charged within days of the complaint, and on Feb. 12, he pleaded guilty to two counts of sending a photograph or film of genitals to cause alarm, distress or humiliation, the CPS said.

Sending unsolicited explicit photos, or “cyberflashing,” became a criminal offense in England and Wales on Jan. 31, with the passage of the Online Safety Act.

“Cyberflashing is a serious crime which leaves a lasting impact on victims, but all too often it can be dismissed as thoughtless ‘banter’ or a harmless joke,” said Hannah von Dadelzsen, a spokesperson for CPS East of England. “Just as those who commit indecent exposure in the physical world can expect to face the consequences, so too should offenders who commit their crimes online; hiding behind a screen does not hide you from the law.”

Hawkes was already on the sex offender register until November 2033 after a conviction last year on charges of sexual activity with a child under 16 and exposure.

He was sentenced to 52 weeks for cyberflashing and an additional 14 weeks for breaching a previous court order, the CPS said. Hawkes was also given a restraining order to prevent him from contacting or approaching the woman and the girl for 10 years, and a sexual harm prevention order, which could prevent him from taking up certain jobs or visiting specified public places for 15 years.

Under the recently passed online safety law, which aims to combat online sexual harassment, cyberflashing offenses on dating apps and other platforms such as WhatsApp can result in up to two years in prison.

Some U.S. states, including California and Texas, have also passed laws to encourage those impacted by cyberflashing to bring lawsuits or file civil complaints against the perpetrators.

California’s 2022 Forbid Lewd Activity and Sexual Harassment Act, or FLASH Act, would allow users who receive “unsolicited” and “obscene” material electronically to seek up to $30,000 in civil damages from the sender, The Washington Post previously reported .

Unlike the law signed in Texas in 2019, which classifies cyberflashing as a Class C misdemeanor with fines of $500, the California measure stops short of labeling cyberflashing a crime. It simply creates a legal mechanism for those receiving unwanted lewd images to seek compensation.

There are no federal laws in the United States prohibiting cyberflashing, and so far none of the states pushing bills to prevent the behavior are encouraging jailing the offenders.

Von Dadelzsen of the Crown Prosecution Service said that Hawke’s sentencing was just the start of convicting those guilty of cyberflashing, and she encouraged other victims to come forward, reminding people that the law grants them lifelong anonymity, from the point they report the offense.

Hawkes borrowed his father’s phone under false pretenses to send the photos, the AP reported , and the 15-year-old girl began crying upon receiving the unsolicited images.

The AP also reported that Hawkes’s lawyer, Barry Gilbert, said his client did not receive sexual gratification from his offenses, which he said arose out of the post-traumatic stress he suffered after being kidnapped, stabbed and held for ransom eight years ago.

Judge Samantha Leigh rejected that argument, telling Hawkes that “you clearly are deeply disturbed and have a warped view of yourself and your sexual desires.”

American Man Sentenced to Life After Killing Woman at German Castle

The U.S. citizen attacked two women, also Americans, near Germany’s iconic Neuschwanstein Castle, and attempted to push both of them to their deaths, a court found. One was killed, the other survived.

A German court on Monday convicted an American man of raping and murdering a woman and attempting to murder her companion near the Neuschwanstein Castle , one of the country’s most famous tourist destinations.

A nearby bridge known for its panoramic views of the fairy-tale castle became a crime scene in June when the 31-year-old man attacked two young American women, who had been on a trip to Europe after their college graduation.

In imposing a life sentence, the court established the “particular gravity of the guilt,” a spokesman for the court said, adding that the man was charged with murder and rape resulting in the death in relation to the first victim, and attempted murder and grievous bodily harm in relation to the second. This means that the defendant will not be eligible for parole after the customary 15 years, though possibly at a later date.

(In Germany, a life sentence is not for a specific time period. A convicted person is usually allowed to apply for parole after 15 years and then, if rejected, to reapply every two years.)

Following privacy laws, German authorities did not name the defendant or the women, but family and friends identified the victims as 21-year-old Eva Liu, who died, and Kelsey Chang, 22. The two friends had recently graduated from the University of Illinois.

According to the police, the two friends did not know the attacker, but had met him that day by the Pöllat Bridge, which looks out onto Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany’s southern state of Bavaria, near the Austrian border. The man persuaded the women to join him on a little-used trail leading into the forest, toward picturesque cliffs surrounding the castle.

He then attacked Ms. Liu and started to choke her. Ms. Chang attempted to fend off the attacker, but was quickly overcome by the man and pushed into the Pöllat Gorge below, falling some 165 feet, according to the German news agency, DPA, which was present at the trial.

The man then strangled Ms. Liu with a belt and raped her. He filmed and photographed the assault, which the judge overseeing the trial said was probably intended as a “trophy” but became important incriminating evidence in the case.

The assailant then pushed the woman down the gorge after her friend. “He disposed of her like a bag of garbage,” DPA quoted the judge as saying in court.

A helicopter rescue mission later retrieved both women and took them to the hospital, but only Ms. Chang survived.

The judge also told the court that the women may have specifically been targeted because of their Asian heritage, according to DPA. He said the defendant apparently had a preference for Asian women, referring to pornographic films police found in his possession.

A spokesman for the court said that the defendant would have one week to appeal the decision.

Only if the judgment is made final, he said, would it be decided whether the defendant should be extradited to the United States to serve his sentence or remain in Germany.

Mother, 37-year-old man arrested after getting involved in elementary school fight: Reports

A mother and an adult man were arrested after police say they got involved in a Florida elementary school fight Friday, multiple outlets reported.

Germikia Denise Freeman, 32, was picking up her sons at Poinciana Park Elementary School in Miami with Charles Nathaniel Webb, 37 when she saw one of her boys in a fight, Local 10 reported .

The Miami-Dade Schools Police arrest report obtained by 7 News Miami said the two ran over to the fight together. Freeman grabbed one of the kids and “violently thrust him back and forth causing the victim to fall to the ground,” and Webb punched a kid in the nose, the report stated, according to 7 News.

School urges parents to 'act responsibly'

Court records show the two made their first court appearance Tuesday on charges of child abuse without great bodily harm, trespassing on school grounds after a warning and interfering with an educational institution.

According to 7 News, the parents said they have reported bullying to school in the past and plan to relocate their kids.

Freeman and Webb have pleaded not guilty, and their lawyers as listed in court records did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools told USA TODAY it is aware of the incident.

"The students involved were disciplined according to the Code of Student Conduct and the other individuals have been arrested. M-DCPS works diligently to promote core values such as respect and integrity among students," the district said in an emailed statement. "We urge parents to do their part by acting responsibly and serving as good role models for their children. Students are also reminded that negative behaviors may result in life-altering consequences.”

Michigan cemetery buried man atop unrelated woman’s grave, then moved body, state says

DETROIT – A Detroit cemetery is facing a cease-and-desist order and fines from state regulators after allegedly burying a man atop an unrelated woman’s grave and then moving him, WDIV Local 4 reports .

The man was buried during 2022 in the wrong plot at Trinity Cemetery, the report said. His body was later moved without the required state permit.

Cemetery owner Sam Tocco is expected to face a $5,000 fine, the report said.

Tocco is also facing a lawsuit related to his time as manager of Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit, the report said. Plaintiff’s claim that their loved ones’ bodies or headstones were moved or went missing at the city-owned cemetery.

What could have been a smooth move turned into a dating debacle for one man.

A Hooters employee exposed one of her creepy customers on TikTok after he attempted to slip her his phone number — while apparently on a date with another woman.

In the clip, Hooters server Jody Tavares vented to her followers, revealing that he wrote his number on a packet of wet wipes and snuck it in with the tip.

Tavares’ testimony, which has been viewed over 1.4 million times on the app, included an appeal to the unnamed woman he was with.

“If you and your boyfriend went to the Stars game in downtown Dallas and came to the Hooters in downtown Dallas afterwards, and I was your waitress,” she says in the video, “I don’t know how the f–k your boyfriend pulled this off, but I’m going to expose him.”

“I’m tired of these men acting shitty as f–k, especially when you’re right there,” she continued, referring to the woman he was sitting with. “Because I don’t think you’re his mom.”

In the comments, however, Tavares updated followers to let them know the man was actually there with his sister — although not all her followers were convinced.

“Girl text him and then get his socials and tell that poor girl,” one user responded.

“But if it was his sister, why did he try to hide it? Why didn’t he just write it on a napkin or the receipt?” questioned another.

“That’s his sister. That’s my guy. He’s single,” one man wrote, claiming he knows the man in question.

Others admitted they’ve tried to hit on people when they’re out with a sibling.

“Did this at dinner with my sister one time and it never crossed my mind it was sus looking,” a user wrote.

Man dead, woman rescued after falling down 80-foot cliff in UTV at Kentucky adventure park

A man has died and a woman was injured after a UTV accident in a Stanton, Kentucky adventure park.

In a statement on social media, Powell County Search & Rescue said reports came in around 8:40 p.m. Sunday March 17 of two people who were making their way to the parking lot at Hollerwood Off-Road Adventure Park in a UTV, or an off-road vehicle, when they lost control and fell off an 80-foot multi-pitch cliff.

Powell County, Kentucky is about 49 miles east of Lexington. The county is also home to Red River Gorge , a federally-designated National Geological Area, National Natural Landmark, National Archaeological District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Red River Gorge is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, camping and rock climbing.

Woman in UTV accident was saved by rescue crews and bystanders

The female victim survived the fall and was able to call 911 herself, telling dispatchers she was trapped inside the vehicle and that the male victim had been ejected.

Numerous emergency and rescue crews, as well a civilian bystanders went to search the different trails via UTV. One team was able to locate the woman, and a paramedic was able to set up an improvised rope system to get down to her. Eventually, with the help of multiple rope systems, rescuers were able to take her out of the vehicle, where she was moved into an air ambulance.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, Powell County Search & Rescue said in a statement. No further update was given on the woman's status, and the identities of the man and woman have not yet been publicly released.

Quaker City man faces two counts of murder in death of Madison Township woman

CAMBRIDGE ‒ A Quaker City area man is facing two counts of murder with firearms specifications in the death of a Madison Township woman.

Dalton John Leach, 32, is currently being held in the Guernsey County Jail awaiting a bond hearing later this week in Cambridge Municipal Court, according to Sheriff Jeffrey D. Paden.

The charges follow a homicide investigation that began last Friday.

Well-being check

Deputies had responded to a Madison Township residence to conduct a well-being check on a 55-year-old woman, after her family members reported they had not been able to make contact with her for several hours. The woman was found dead inside the residence with suspicious circumstances, Paden said. At that time, detectives were summoned to the scene as well as the Guernsey County coroner and the investigation was initiated.

The crime scene unit from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office was requested as well to process the scene for evidence. Paden said that Leach was identified as a person of interest and all other law enforcement agencies were alerted to be on the lookout for him and the victim’s vehicle shortly before 1 p.m. Friday.

Leach was found in the Indianapolis, Indiana, area and was taken into custody on initial charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle, the sheriff said. Leach waived extradition and was transported back to the Guernsey County Jail on Monday night.

Following further investigation, detectives met with the Guernsey County prosecutor and reviewed the case and charges of murder were then prepared and filed through the Cambridge Municipal Court on Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing.
