After more than 25 years, John Linardos isn’t interested in sending his craft beer all over the world. He knows his skills, he’s honed his craft, and he isn’t into the newest fads in beer — what he refers to as DYI, or “Do-Yourself-In.”

Linardos established the city’s first microbrewery on Canfield Avenue in 1994, well before Cass Corridor became Midtown and before tap rooms started cranking out watermelon seltzers. He started Motor City Brewing Works with a few simple beers and a wood-fired pizza oven. When he first opened, Linardos wanted to preside over a comfortable neighborhood gathering spot, brew some interesting products with his buddies, and boost creative young talent. At the brewing company’s new tap house on Livernois Avenue, which opened on Monday, July 12, Linardos has the opportunity to grow and refine that dream.

The expansion is a long time coming. Linardos began scouting for a second location for MCBW in 2016, finally homing in on the Avenue of Fashion around 2018 . Since then, with the help of friends and a grant from Motor City Match, he’s refurbished the interior of the former Hunter’s Supper Club with meticulous attention to detail. Linardos shored up the exposed wooden roof beams and repaired bricks, windows, and the fieldstone fireplace. The hardwood floors, likely original to the 100-plus-year-old building, have been sanded and polished to a shine.

The exterior of Motor City Brewing Works shows worn brick, restored windows and a courtyard with a garden.

The Livernois taproom’s cavernous space was left open to foster conversation and mingling. Linardos aims for the spot to be a neighborhood anchor, bolstering the retail establishments and restaurants that already line the Avenue of Fashion. “We don’t want to be a destination where you’re counting on people to drive in. We’d rather just be steady and serve the community around us,” Linardos says. To that end, he’s filled the menu with unfussy but fresh and shareable items, like the Banh Mi Oh My sandwich, vegetarian “beef” nachos, and a full line of brick-oven pizzas.

As part of his determination to provide a community benefit, Linardos is also keen to foster new talent in Detroit’s brewing scene. “We’re looking to host younger brewers so they can experiment and we can give them some tutelage,” he says. “And then other brewers can come in and work on some collaborative projects. When you have a system this small you can screw around and even if you mess up the consequences aren’t that huge.”

Taps of beverages

Linardos’s longtime friends and Detroit brewing legends Scott King (founder of King Brewing, Milking It Productions, and Axle Brewing ) and Pat Scanlon (Rochester Mills, Detroit Brew Factory, Royal Oak Brewing) join Linardos in crafting MCBW’s beers. To allow for a roomier kitchen and a focus on fresh, simple food, most of the beer served at the Livernois location will continue to be brewed at the Canfield Avenue microbrewery. In addition to perennial favorites Ghettoblaster Pale Ale and Nut Brown Ale, the Livernois taproom offers a small-run cider, a new summer ale, and a few canned cocktails.

But Linardos and friends aren’t resting entirely on their beer-making laurels. The trio are eager to unveil the new Motor City Mettle Series, a limited-run series of high-gravity India Pale Ales. The artwork for each of the beers was designed by Detroit artist Chris Turner . The Mettle series will consist of four different small-batch IPAs: Dank and Hazy, Notorious, Gigawatt, and Notorious Pineapple Jalapeno. The Notorious, currently on tap at the Livernois location, is a double-dry-hopped, double-riced IPA whose tart crispness and smooth finish belies the substantial 8.7 percent ABV. None of the Mettle Series IPA is a weakling. The Dank & Hazy IPA also packs a punch at 7.8 percent and features double oat and wheat in addition to Amarillo, Cascade, Citra, and Mosaic hops.

After successfully exporting MCBW’s Ghettoblaster to several other states, Linardos is tightening the focus of the brewing company’s operations. Ghettoblaster will now be limited to southeast Michigan, and the Mettle series will be available only through two distributors at a small number of bars and stores. “The whole origin of the craft movement was to make small batches that were fresh to be consumed quickly,” he says. “What’s happening in our industry is that we’re going from micro to macro. The highly successful breweries are distributing beer now outside of the country. So we had to sit and think, ‘Can we do that? Is that us? What are our roots?’”

The goal, he says, is for each ounce of the Mettle Series to be produced, bottled, or kegged, then distributed, sold, and consumed within days of its creation. “Our roots are in this hyper-fresh beer that folks can get right away. We’re a company that’s at 25 years and we’re figuring out what we’re going to do for the next 25. So we’ve throttled back to concentrate on our back yard.”

Motor City Brewing Works , 19350 Livernois, initially opens with limited hours: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Our Company History

Brewing in Cincinnati started with the English but was expanded by its humble beginnings by the arrival of German immigrants, by the 1840's 13,000 resided in Cincinnati and brought their love of beer with them. At that time Ales and Lagers were prominent brews throughout our city. Consumption increased and the German beer influence met with English styles brought a wide range of beer production that would soon place Cincinnati on the map as one of the largest beer producing cities in the world. Born in Over The Rhine in the heart of The Historical Cincinnati Brewing District in 2018. Founder Keith Spurling set out to bring back the 1800's prominent style of beer Cincinnati was known for. We are a  family owned company and love our brewing heritage. The recipe revival of our Motors American Ale reflects the partnerships and developments created Pre - Prohibition and will take you back in time with a taste of Cincinnati Beer History using modern day ingredients during a time when quantity never compromised quality. Our Motors American is brewed in small batches and contains a balance of a hard working two row grain with a German - American Hop Twist. We feel this Hop combo represents the German and American Settlers that came together and literally built our city on beer. We hope this close to period correct pint filled with history and packed with flavor will quench your Cincinnati beer thirst and leave you yelling for another. The Bitter Truth? Some Craft Brewers Just Aren’t Built for This Market

The Bitter Truth? Some Craft Brewers Just Aren’t Built for This Market

words: Dave Infante

illustration: Danielle Grinberg

Published: May 24, 2024

Sometimes, I worry I’m too hard on the craft brewing industry. With infrequent exception, the folks who own and run the nation’s ~10,000 small and independent breweries are doing their best to make high-quality beer for their customers and contribute positively to their communities. Unfortunately, operating in good faith isn’t the same as operating a good business, and as the American thirst for craft beer has plateaued in recent years, that distinction has become painfully clear.

Squaring that circle means facing hard truths about the brewing business writ large, and individual breweries’ businesses writ small. That’s no mean feat. If “D2: The Mighty Ducks” taught us anything , it’s that people don’t tend to respond well when you tell them their best isn’t good enough anymore. The industry has heard plenty of that from yours truly. But last month in Las Vegas, Scott Metzger of Craft ‘Ohana (the parent company of Maui Brewing Co. and Modern Times Beer, and the 26th-largest craft brewer by volume last year, per the Brewers Association’s data and segment definition, skated along that line about as well as anybody I’ve yet seen.

The occasion was the BA’s 2024 Craft Brewers Conference, which took place in late April in Sin City. Your humble Hop Take columnist was on location for VinePair, and the mood was mostly buoyant. The presentation from Craft ‘Ohana’s president and chief operating officer was a refreshing deviation from that at-times-surprising norm, but slotted as it unfortunately was for the final afternoon of the four-day conference, the crowd in attendance was far less than the Venetian Expo ballroom’s capacity.

More brewers ought to have heard Metzger’s gimlet-eyed takes on the myriad challenges facing craft brewers. “Our whole category can be replaced,” he said that day. “We don’t have to have a pity party about this, but every single day and every single moment, we have to continue to earn our place in this industry, earn our place in the minds of our customers.”

Even now, with brewery closures roughly matching the pace of openings, flatlining sales, and more competition than ever for America’s beer money, the craft brewing industry still hasn’t reached full consensus on this wisdom. There’s still plenty of “Field of Dreams”-style wishcasting underpinning the business — if you brew it, they will come. It’s a hopeful sentiment, and it might work for some breweries. But this is not a particularly hopeful moment for the U.S. beer business, and besides, hope is not a strategy. So I called up Metzger a couple weeks after CBC 2024 to discuss his tough-love talk in more detail, in hopes of amplifying his take to more of his colleagues (and selfishly, to let somebody else be hard on the craft brewing industry for a change).

“As I approach 18 years in the industry, I’ve seen kind of a common thread, and that is the ‘cool factor’ or appeal of our industry tends to attract people to it that do not have a business background,” he told Hop Take by phone earlier this month. “That’s not to cast aspersions … but maybe they got a little false bravado or confidence from the ‘rising tide lifting all boats’ atmosphere we saw for so long.” Metzger first remembers noticing this lackadaisical attitude among peers around 2019, when he was still working at Massachusetts’ Wormtown Brewery. “I just found myself talking about our business in the jargon and vernacular that is appropriate [for a manufacturing discipline like brewing] and seeing blank stares,” he recalls. “That, to me, was that canary” — in the coal mine, that is.

That timing is conspicuous in hindsight. The sales tide was still rising toward the end of last decade, albeit slowly. Macrobrewers were still buying craft outfits; interest rates were still low; 10-year commercial leases signed during the salad days still hadn’t turned over. Now, all those tailwinds have turned to headwinds, and we’re watching sales ebb: the BA has tracked volume declines in the overall U.S. beer business for four of the past five years (and a scant 1 percent increase in 2021), and after scrapping its way through the pandemic years with some single-digit positive percentages, the craft brewing segment’s volumes were slightly down in 2023 as well. As the tide has gone out, it’s revealed some industry rot lurking beneath the waterline.

“A lot of the struggles that I hear people asking questions about… they almost catch me off guard. Why do we have to think about our supply chain?’ Oh, what a travesty,” Metzger scoffs, pantomiming indignant gripes about the legitimate headaches that dogged the U.S. brewing industry (among so many others) during the first couple years of the pandemic as an example of the exceptionalism he’s encountered among some brewers. Challenges around black-swan-event logistics, or basic product-market fit, or anything in between, are not “unique, woe-is-us kind of things,” he argues, correctly. Craft brewers that grapple with them on that footing are wasting time and resources reinventing the wheel at a pivotal juncture for their businesses.

To emphasize this point, in Vegas, Metzger presented a reading list of management books that contain frameworks and systems that he and the Craft ‘Ohana team have found helpful, including “ The Great Game of Business ,” “ The 12 Principles of Manufacturing Excellence ,” and “ The Toyota Way .” If craft brewing’s cool factor was a ZIRP-induced indulgence (it was, at least partially), those breweries that make it through this downturn will need to get a little more studious — and flexible.

As someone who often hectors craft breweries to expand their own narrow imaginations about their portfolios , their taproom experiences , and their labor relations , I get occasional guff from industry types who got into craft beer to focus tightly on, y’know, making beer . I think it’s an understandable frustration! On the phone, I asked Metzger whether he could appreciate the dismay of brewers who entered the industry during the boom out of genuine passion for its artisanal, anti-corporate, and community-oriented aspects rather than professional vanity or money-grabbing impulse, only to be told after years of honing that craft that they needed to get schooled on Six Sigma just to survive.

“I think there’s room for both things to exist simultaneously,” he responds, arguing that breweries that marry objective and subjective forms of excellence (i.e., logistical precision in the fulfillment department, and creative inspiration on the brewhouse floor) are not forsaking the latter for the former. The American drinking public has long since tired of merely exploring the sheer variety of beers on offer at a taproom or supermarket; consistent execution on coherent value propositions and experiences has superseded rote novelty as the industry’s new table stakes. Those are problems that manufacturing, managing, and marketing can solve, but only if brewers embrace those disciplines rather than lamenting the “cultural shift” that has made them necessary.

“The customer is always right,” says Metzger, but “they are completely unpredictable.” The Other Halfs and Treehouses of the world can abide by the “Field of Dreams” dogma: If they brew it, they will come, and in not insignificant numbers, too. The thousands of small, independent breweries that compose the industry’s “long tail” may be able to count on their owned-and-operated sales at low volumes, but if growth is the goal, the hype-brewery model is hope, not a strategy. Breweries like Craft ‘Ohana that rely in part on a distribution model that exposes them to intra- and inter-category competition at third-party retailers can still win growth in tough conditions (Maui’s hard seltzer is bucking that segment’s slump and posting terrific year-over-year sales growth), but not if they expect SKUs and strategies that worked in the past to work in the future. Those that do are practically daring drinkers to lose interest in their brands — and maybe in craft beer generally, too.

That’s something everyone in the industry should be worried about.

🤯 Hop-ocalypse Now

Less than a year after Sapporo USA unceremoniously shuttered its first American craft-brewing acquisition, Anchor Brewing Co. , it now claims to be “fully integrated” with Stone Brewing Co. , its second purchase in the segment. That integration includes a new name for the entity (Sapporo-Stone Brewing Co., naturally) as well as a $60 million expansion plan to nearly double the barrelage coming out of the firm’s plants in San Diego County and Richmond, Va . The upgrades, $20 million of which the company says are already done, are in service of a targeted 700,000 barrels annually, and a place among the top 10 brewers by volume nationally. This, at a time when something like half the collective brewing capacity in the U.S. is slack. The boom times are… back?

Pabst Brewing Co. is bringing back Not Your Father’s Hard Soda Pop for another shot, sure why not… The Teamsters are claiming victory after a three-month strike against Molson Coors in Fort Worth , though details are scarce on the just-ratified contract … Buffalo Wild Wings , one of the biggest sellers of draft beer in the country, grew overall sales 5.9 percent in 2022, just outpacing the industry… Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito sold Anheuser-Busch InBev stock and bought Molson Coors stock at a key moment in last year’s Bud Light fiasco (woof), but at least he probably took a loss on that trade (lol)…

📉 …and downs

Heineken USA is closing Lagunitas’ taproom and production brewery in Chicago … A new study outta Carnegie Mellon University suggests cannabis users consume the drug more frequently than drinkers drink… In its suit against the $24.6 billion Kroger-Albertsons deal, the Federal Trade Commission now alleges that execs at the latter firm illegally deleted text messages … Rumors about Boston Beer Co. selling to a macrobrewer have swirled for virtually as long as I can remember, and are once again swirling…

Things To Do

Restaurants food and drink, restaurants food and drink | avon brewing co. prepares to open madison brewing co., former cornerstone brewing co. will be converted into new establishment.

Avon Brewing Co. recently purchased the Cornerstone Brewing Co. on West Main Street in Madison Village. The company will rebrand and reopen the establishment as Madison Brewing Co. A soft opening for Madison Brewing Co. could take place as soon as Memorial Day weekend, co-owner Mathias Hauck said on May 22. (Bill DeBus - The News-Herald)

“We’re excited about bringing our brand to Madison and being in a historic downtown area,” said Mathias Hauck, a co-owner of the new Madison Brewing Co. and Avon Brewing Co.

Hauck owns these brewing enterprises, and Medina Brewing Co. , along with Brian Weaver, his brother-in-law; and Ken Weaver, his father-in-law.

Cornerstone Brewing Co. in Madison Village opened nearly 15 years ago. Owner Roy Blalock launched the Madison brewpub five years after starting the first Cornerstone Brewing Co. in Berea.

Blalock said he had “a wonderful time” owning and operating the Madison pub.

“Being from Madison, it was enjoyable to bring something nice to the community, and I’m leaving it in good hands with the folks from Madison Brewing Co.,” said Blalock, who now lives in North Perry Village.

During its stretch in Madison, Cornerstone became known as a brewpub that served a variety of its own hand-crafted beers, and featured a menu with items ranging from appetizers and salads to sandwiches and full meals.

The Cornerstone location in Berea is still owned by Blalock and was not acquired by Avon Brewing Co.

The last day of operation for Cornerstone was May 19. Since then, the new owners have been working on converting the interior of the building into Madison Brewing Co.

“We’re hoping to have a soft opening sometime this weekend,” Hauck said in a May 22 telephone interview.

Hauck said Madison Brewing Co. will retain all Cornerstone employees who wanted to stay with the new business.

“We interviewed everybody months ago,” he said. “They’ve been eagerly awaiting this as well.”

Full-scale operations at Madison Brewing Co. could begin as early as May 28, he added.

Hauck has become familiar with the Madison area, thanks to his role as brewmaster at Avon Brewing Co. For the past eight years, Avon has been brewing its beer on a contractual basis at Hop View Brewing Co. in Madison Township.

“We enjoy the (Madison) area and the people,” Hauck said. “We also love the opportunity to expand into a different region.”

Avon Brewing Co., which opened in 2016, has been achieving success at growth and expansion over the past four years.

In July of 2020, the company opened Medina Brewing Co., a brewery and tap room, in the city of Medina. During that same month and year, Avon Brewing Co. purchased and reopened the former ZZ’s Big Top bar on Detroit Road in Avon.

Avon Brewing Co. also is based on Detroit Road in Avon, but that location is slated to change in the near future.

In early March, the company announced it would be purchasing and moving to The Shipyards building at 500 Shipyards Way in Lorain.

The Shipyards already includes an event center, multiple outdoor patios and a coffee shop.

Once Avon Brewing Co. relocates to building, it will change its name to Lorain Brewing Co. The entire building then will become known as Lorain Brewing Co. and Events Center.

A precise date for the move has not yet been announced.

At the new site, the company will be able to brew nearly all of the craft beers for its affiliated breweries. However, Hauck said a small brewing system in basement of the Madison location will be kept and used occasionally to brew small batches of specialty beers.

Hauck also was able to provide some other details about what customers can expect when they visit the new Madison Brewing Co.

In regard to food, he said Madison Brewing will feature “a brewery-centric menu.”

Examples of some items include:

• Sloppy tots — A combination of tater tots and sloppy joe meat, along with scallions and other ingredients

• Truffle fries

• Wings in 23 different flavors

• A fried jumbo walleye sandwich

• Smashburgers.

Hauck said Madison Brewing Co. will provide the atmosphere of a family-operated brewery and an array of high-quality beer and foods.

“The focus is really just a place where you can come and meet people, or celebrate all of life’s wonderful opportunities,” he said. “You can come for the beer and stay for the food, or come for the food and stay for the beer.”

Tuapse Refinery in Krasnodar Krai has formed a part of the vertically integrated structure of Rosneft since its inception. This is the only Russian refinery located on the Black Sea coast, and it is also one of the oldest: it was put into operation in 1929.

The program of modernization of the Tuapse Refinery is being implemented in three phases:

  • 1 st construction phase — within the processing unit (section) ELOU-AVT-12 (with the capacity of 12 million tons/year for oil) and off-site facilities;
  • 2 nd construction phase — within the processing units (sections) for vacuum gas oil hydrocracking, diesel hydrofining, sulfur production, hydrogen production, gasoline hydrotreatment, reforming, isomerization and off-site facilities;
  • 3 d construction phase — within the processing unit (section) for Flexicoking and off-site facilities.

After the completion of the modernization program, the oil refining depth will increase from 54% to 98.7%.

In Q4 2013, within the framework of implementation of the project for construction of the new refinery, a crude oil distillation unit ELOU-AVT-12 and other facilities of the 1st start-up complex were commissioned in the territory of the Tuapse refinery).

  • For 2 nd phase facilities — development of working documentation was completed, the construction and assembly works were under way.
  • For 3 d phase facilities — development of working documentation was under way. Modernization of the Tuapse refinery all allow to satisfy the growing needs for high-quality motor fuels of the Russian South. Furthermore, considering the unique geographic position and transshipment capacities of the Company in Tuapse, the potential for alternative export of crude oil will be expanded.

In 2014, the summary Investorsments into the Tuapse Refinery totaled 57 billion rubles net of VAT.

On tap and on the market: New brewery opens in Southport

motorboat brewing company

Yes, the Carolina Crab Brewing Company is still for sale , along with the expansive wooded property behind the brand-new facility in Southport.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not in business.

In fact, there was a soft opening at the brewery at 4810 Long Beach Road on May 22. Look for beer, wine and live music going forward with indoor and outdoor seating that includes a shady patio overlooking the aforementioned woods.

“We want it to be a comfortable space for the community,” said Frank Marchetti, who was one of the people behind the bar for the opening.

He's also one of the original partners for the project, which was announced in 2021. Construction was completed in 2023 for beer production facility and taproom with space for food trucks and parking. In fact, there are some T-shirts at Carolina Crab printed with a 2023 opening date.

Previous reporting: This Brunswick County brewery never opened. And now it's for sale.

But Marchetti said some of the partners and the brewmaster left the business almost a year ago.

“But, you just have to keep rolling,” he said.

So, they are continuing as planned for Carolina Crab. They are even continuing to search for a new brewmaster so they can brew onsite. Until then, the beer list includes selections from Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing Company, Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, Charlotte’s NoDa Brewing Company and Mother Earth Brewing in Kinston. There are also wines, hard seltzers, mass-market beers and snacks available.

While it’s difficult to say what will happen going forward, the plan is for the brewery to remain open. Marchetti also said the original permits included adding a pavilion and another taproom behind the brewery. There are no immediate plans to start construction, but it’s a possibility, he said.

And potential buyers have the option of buying the new brewery, which is listed at $2.25 million, and the choice of adding the 13 or so acres of land nearby.
