VIPCA Charter Yacht Show

Early November 2020

Held on St Thomas in the Virgin Islands the Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association (VIPCA) is returning for another edition. This event is due to take place in the first week of November and is set to welcome over 50 charter yachts. The show is overseen by a body which represents the interests of charter yachts that sail to the US Virgin Islands and is an industry-only event.

Many charter brokers are planning to attend to see a small selection of motor yachts, mono hulls and catamarans. The vessels will all be on display in the IGY Yacht Haven Grande along with friendly captains and crew. With an exciting social programme, daytime viewings, luncheons and competitions, this prestigious event promises to be one of the best. There will also be culinary competitions where chefs can show off their skills to the judges.

The VIPCA has just recently been formed and plans to invite students to learn about the marine industry at a VI Yough Marine Development Day. The Association also plans to contribute to the Virgin Island’s economy as well as stabilising the marine industry. Membership of VIPCA is available to professional crew, marine related businesses, vessels and local businesses. It has an interest in protecting, promoting and making the marine charter industry succeed in the Virgin Islands.

USVI Charter Yacht Show Set for November in St Thomas

Planning has already begun for the 2022 edition of the USVI Charter Yacht Show.

This year’s event will be set at IGY Marinas’ Yacht Haven Grande in St Thomas from Nov. 12-15.

“Build. Learn. Shine. Certify. These are the keywords that spotlight what is new at the 2022 USVI Charter Yacht Show,” says Oriel Blake, VIPCA’s Executive Director. “Charter brokers repeatedly emphasize the importance of not only meeting new crew but building relationships with crew of existing 2023 bookings, so we added several new networking opportunities. We also are hosting breakfast seminars with professionals and government officials for learning the latest news in the industry and a seminar especially for new crew too. The best yacht and best crew in show awards, the cocktail and culinary competitions which this year feature an escalated panel of judges, give opportunities for crews to really shine. And finally, training by Seven Seas Preparatory for Captains and Crews offers valuable tricks of the trade and a new ‘Charter Yacht Professional Excellence’ certification.”

This year’s event will have some new concepts, most notably the mid-show evening “yacht hop,” with a competition between clearinghouses for teamed crew-hosted broker entertainment onboard select yachts.

“Attendance at the VIPCA show is important for brokers that book this segment of the market as it’s a crucial way to stay up to date,” said said German Liubitch, Founder and Sales Director at RitzyCharters, headquartered in Miami, FL. “It’s equally important for yachts to show. Meeting with crews in person, seeing the layout and upkeep, and any changes to a yachts program helps brokers to better book the vessel.”

The Yacht Haven Grande Marina, which is hosting the event, has become one of the hottest yachting spots in the wider Caribbean, with a surge in interest in the US Virgin Islands amid the pandemic.

Much of that growth began with the entry of The Moorings to St Thomas, a move which helped kickstart a broader charter yacht movement in the USVI, particularly when the neighboring British Virgin Islands wasn’t exactly making things easy for boaters.

“We are pleased to support VIPCA’s USVI Charter Yacht Show, the destination, and all events that help to create a robust economy for the territory,” said Bert Fowles, IGY’s Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “The U.S. Virgin Islands is one of the greatest yachting destinations in the world.”

Crewed Yacht Charter Winners in the USVI & BVI

See who won! "A robust charter yacht season is officially underway in the U.S. Virgin Islands". That’s the take-home message from the USVI Charter Yacht Show, held November 7 to 10, at IGY Marina’s Yacht Haven Grande St Thomas, and hosted by the Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association (VIPCA) as a fully vaccinated event with COVID-19 protocols in place.

Over 100 brokers from the Caribbean, U.S., and Europe attended in person, with an additional 40 virtually, a figure that combines to underscore the Show’s must-do nature for this global charter yacht sales force. Nearly 40 yachts were open for the show, a number down from past years yet due to the industry’s success in that many yachts were already out on charter. Solid ongoing sponsor support from local and U.S.-based businesses and the Government of the Virgin Islands provides the firm foundation for the continued growth and success of the charter yacht industry and its economic contribution to the U.S. territory as part of the vibrant marine tourism sector.

The Honorable Albert Bryan Jr., Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, attended the charter brokers welcome event on November 7th, and made opening remarks:

“A year and a half ago we made a conscious decision that we were not going to close our shores to sailors. We were going to honor what is in our Virgin Islands national anthem, the Virgin Islands March, to ‘hold out a welcome for one and all’. That attitude has certainly paid off. I’d like to thank all the charter brokers who made last season one of the most amazing seasons on the water. Including, for the first time, charter boats in Christiansted and Frederiksted on St. Croix. Totally amazing,” says Governor Bryan.

Charter Season Kicks Off at USVI Charter Yacht Show

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The annual showpiece of the industry’s hard work in perfecting its craft paid off with a successful seasonal launch at the USVI Charter Yacht Show, held at IGY Marina’s Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas.

Nearly 70 yachts, both power and sail, with uniquely qualified professional crews, were on show to over 160 brokers from over 100 charter businesses in the Caribbean, U.S., and Europe, which market the territory’s customized boutique marine vacations.

Synergizing the destination of the U.S. Virgin Islands with its charter industry professionals, show organizers, the Virgin Islands Professional Charter Yacht Association (VIPCA), work year-round with several territorial departments and federal agencies.

Key aspects of this work were the subjects of event seminars that updated attendees on government regulations and information on natural resources. A taste of local culture and history was also offered in the opening ceremony with Caribbean Ritual Dancers and with a panel presentation by historians and national park tour experts on the second day.

“VIPCA has gone above and beyond to meet its mission of promoting the USVI as a destination of choice for the yachting community and protecting the interests of our marine community and businesses,” Governor Albert Bryan said.

Alani Henneman Todman, assistant commissioner, Marketing and Communications at the USVI’s Department of Tourism, was at the show’s awards ceremony on Monday.

“We have been an avid supporter of this event, and because of Oriel’s (Oriel Blake, VIPCA Executive Director) passion and support, we have continued to contribute more sponsorship and engage with the marine industry more,” Henneman Todman said. “Today, the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands announced an agreement to reciprocate charter regulations between the USVI and British Virgin Islands. The pandemic allowed us to focus on the charter yacht industry, which took off and kept us afloat before cruise ships came back. I’d also like to announce that we are running a new campaign, Naturally in Rhythm. This focuses heavily on the five senses, and it is heavy marine. So, it’s a privilege to support and sponsor the charter yacht industry and wish you a strong season ahead.”

Charter Season Kicks Off at USVI Charter Yacht Show

A ‘Must-Do’ Show – Mark Your Calendar Now

This year’s USVI Charter Yacht Show’s format featured several ways for brokers and crews to meet. This included the traditional four days of dockside yacht viewings, evening parties with pop-up bars featuring local breweries, participation in the prestigious mixology and culinary competitions, catered seminars, training sessions, and formal dinners.

“This is one of the most important shows for brokers to attend,” says German Liubitch, the Miami, Florida-based founder and sales director at Ritzy Charters, who attends two to three shows annually in the Caribbean and Europe. “It’s one of the bigger shows, and therefore provides a good opportunity to see many crews and vessels at once. The fleet has grown, with a lot of rotation with crews and new boats, so this makes it even more important to attend to best market the yachts in the coming year. The opening ceremony, seminars, awards, friendly atmosphere, and superb organization of the show make this show a must-do.”

The 2023 USVI Charter Yacht Show will take place from November 11-15. Registration information for boats and brokers will be announced at  www.usviyachtshow.org

A Boutique Fleet

The boutique fleet of yachts on show ranged from 40’-105’ in length and included monohulls and catamarans, power and sail. Each yacht and its crew combine to provide a customized rather than cookie-cutter vacation experience.

“It’s having a good boat that’s well prepared, including all the latest water toys, and, of course, a huge focus on offering a truly great charter experience – that’s what I think contributed to our award,” says Captain Richard Vincent, who, with Chef Dominique Vincent, on the 50’ Lagoon, Ether, won Best Yacht in Show in the Up to 50’ category. The couple has 19 weeks of charters already booked for the season.

In the Best Yacht in Show 51’-60’ category, the winner was the 56’ Lagoon, Altesse. “We want guests to come on board, know they will be well taken care of and catered to, and have a trip of a lifetime, whether it’s seeing a new beach every day or enjoying a meal of their favorite or new favorite foods,” says Chef Stephanie Johnson, who charters with Captain Kennon Jones.

Teamwork creates dream charters on Seaclusion, a Sunreef 80, which won Best Yacht in Show for the 61’ & Over category. “Attention to detail and exceeding expectations is one of our strengths. For example, one guest listed a preference for decaf coffee on her preference list. So, in the evening, we used decaf when making expresso martinis as part of a 6-course tasting menu,” says Chef Jessica Muller.

The Best Crew in Show award went to Captain Robbie Sargeant, Chef Sofia Ribeiro, and First Mate Dean Cumberbach, on the 67’ Lagoon, C’est La Vie. “I think the way all of us work together as a team, and how our personalities, strengths, and talents gel together, makes guests feel welcome and comfortable on what is a special vacation,” says Sargeant.

Boat and crew awards and prizes included stunning Virgin Islands-styled timepieces donated by Cardow Jewelers, a flagship jeweler headquartered on Main Street in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

“Cardow is excited to sponsor the USVI Charter Yacht Show by providing winners with the Frederiksted watch, which was designed exclusively by Cardow Jewelers and represents the west end of our sister Island of St Croix. It is a unique, high-quality memento that represents a part of the Virgin Islands. Each watch has a cut-out profile of the three U.S. Virgin Islands—cosmopolitan St. Thomas, historic St. Croix, and pristine St. John. Cardow thrives on giving back to its community, and one of the many ways this is expressed is through sponsorship,” says Finia Gooding, sales director.

Also donated as prizes were Veuve Clicquot champagne, ZUP water toys, customized crew uniforms from Maho Crew, vouchers for classes at the Seven Seas Preparatory Academy and Ashburton Cookery School, as well as many more gifts by Northern Lights, Offshore Marine, Lovango Resort & Beach Club, Reefco Services, Spa to Go, Budget Marine, Economic Development Authority, Box Bar, St. John Brewers, and Stream2Sea.

Strong Season Ahead

In the last six years, the U.S. Virgin Islands’ charter yacht industry has proved resilient in the face of challenges such as hurricanes and a global pandemic, grown as an economic force, and put the U.S. territory back on the global map for boutique-style, exquisitely customized crewed yacht charter vacations.

“The USVI Charter Yacht Show is a remarkable representation of our luxury crewed charter industry in the Caribbean. The gathering and display of our vessels and crews, which service this market, alongside the businesses that facilitate and bring these opportunities to charter clientele, all in one beautiful venue. Beyond this, I’ve always been impressed by the format and structure of our industry. The relationships that so many different small businesses have forged together to offer a customized experience for our guests on board is truly a beautiful thing,” says Dare Blankenhorn, owner/director of St. Thomas-based Charter Caribe.

Valued  Sponsor Support

Sponsors of the USVI Charter Yacht show include the USVI Department of Tourism; Yacht Haven Grande; IGY Marinas; the Gowrie Group representing Trawick and Cigna; Parts & Power Ltd., distributor of Northern Lights; Mango Media; Cardow Jewelers; Offshore Marine; Catamaran Central; Grey Goose, distributed by West Indies Company; Veuve Clicquot and Captain Morgan, distributed by Bellows International; Maho Crew; Moe’s Fresh Market; VIYA Business Solutions; ZUP; Harbor Shoppers; Seachange; and, the Charter Yacht Broker Association.

2022 BVI & USVI Fall Charter Yacht Shows: Winners Wow the Judges!

by Florencia Falotico on Dec 06, 2022

2022 BVI & USVI Fall Charter Yacht Shows: Winners Wow the Judges!

Several of our Ritzy Charters brokers recently attended the annual charter yacht shows in the Virgin Islands and reported that the shows were a huge success. The BVI show was held November 8-11 at Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, Tortola and the USVI Show followed November 12-15 at IGY Marina’s Yacht Haven Grande, St. Thomas.

The shows were the largest the industry has seen in recent years, and this year’s attendees were excited to see such a strong turnout. The BVI show featured nearly 30 yachts and in St. Thomas 70 participating yachts showed off their latest décor, new water toys, and other features.

Some of the most recent additions to the charter fleet featured in the show included:

Seaclusion , 80 ft 2020 Sunreef Catamaran. Also won Best in Show in the large yacht category!

Mariah Princess , 77 ft 2020 Lagoon Catamaran

Relentless II , 80 ft 2022 Sunreef Catamaran

usvi yacht charter show

An important aspect of these charter yacht shows is the opportunity for brokers to see firsthand these yachts that are available for charter here, interact with the crew, and sample the chef’s skills in the galley via a special invite lunch or dinner during the show.

Our charter brokers attend several annual yacht shows to learn more about the yachts and crews that are available in specific destinations, as well as to build connections with industry partners as described in the Ritzy Charters: Your Best Choice Yacht Charter Broker  blog post.

In addition to the prestigious culinary competition, crews also compete for Best Cocktail, Best Crew, and the top award, Best in Show which considers the overall presentation and special details of the yacht along with the attitude and energy of the crew.

This year's schedule allowed time for a trip to Jost Van Dyke or for a lucky few, a sail to Anegada aboard Perfect Landing , two popular spots on a BVI itinerary. These were excellent trips for our brokers to familiarize themselves with the areas and gather useful information for clients.

VIPCA Charter Yacht Show, St Thomas, USVI, 11-14 November 2023

USVI Yacht Charter Show 2021

VIPCA Charter Yacht Show comes straight after the neighbouring BVI Charter Show. These days, this is a much bigger show, hosted in St Thomas, at the IGY Marina.

Catamaran Mahasattva at St Thomas - High Point Yachting

During the show, crewed yachts, mostly catamarans, open doors to the brokers and other industry members. We all spend few days visiting the yachts, talking to the crews, tasting chefs’ specialities, finding out how and why they might be the best charter option for our clients. We listen and learn about their experiences, we give suggestions, we take advices.
