Kajun Diva | Lagoon 380 38.08ft

Us $219,000.

S/v Kajun Diva is now on the market! The Lagoon 380 is one of the best-selling catamarans on the market. The Lagoon is built by Construction Navale Bordeaux (CNB) in Bordeaux, France. There were 1000 of the Lagoon 380s built from 2000 to 2019. Not only are these classy cats built for coastal cruising and chartering, but they are also proven circumnavigators. The Lagoon 380s are well built with both safety and comfort in mind.

The current owners have enjoyed sailing s/v Kajun Diva for 2 years and have kept her in great condition with many upgrades. This vessel already comes with much of the equipment you need to go cruising with 400 watts of solar, 125-amp inverter/charger and a battery bank consisting of 12 deep cycle batteries (10 for the house bank installed 2022, 2 for the engines start installed 2023). The Lagoon 380 has a 90-gallon water tank and a Spectra water maker capable of making 30-40 gallons per hour. She carries 2 30-gallon fuel tanks plus an extra 90 gallons for the Norpro 7kw generator.

S/v Kajun Diva is equipped with 2 reliable 27 Hp Yanmar 3GM30FC diesel engines. Between having two engines and the compact size of this vessel, docking is made easy and she is highly maneuverable. The main sail is fully battened and in very good condition, the head sail is a furling jib in good condition and the spinnaker with sock is in excellent condition. There is one electric NEC winch installed Dec. 2022 at the helm for the main sail. For navigation there is a Garmin GPS 1204 Model new in 2022, and an Auto Raymarine ST60 + Hydrolectric auto pilot. To get you to shore there is a 10.6ft ridged fiberglass dinghy with a 2022 15hp Hidea outboard.

The Lagoon 380 is comfortable with her beamy hulls, and 6’7” headroom. The unique vertical salon windows are more shaded from the mid-day sun, lessening the “greenhouse effect” from the slanted window designs, and also allows for amazing visibility with a 360-degree viewing from inside the salon. The dual sliding doors give the salon a very open, airy environment. The galley is equipped with a Mediterranean Dickinson 3 burner stove with oven, a Frigoboat fridge/freezer, and a foot pump for the galley water with a 110v 10-gallon hot water tank. There is also a water filtration system installed under the sink for particles. There are 3 sleeping cabins with large comfortable berths and ample storage. The 2 heads each have a shower and a Tacma electric marine toilet.

On the exterior the Lagoon 380 has plenty of unobstructed space to easily walk around. The bridge deck clearance is high in comparison to other cats; this greatly reduces slamming and improves hull longevity. The U-shaped cockpit seating and table is spacious and creates a very secure and enclosed cockpit area. S/v Kajun Diva has a canvas dodger with a partial hard bimini top, and the cockpit table is in beautiful condition. The owners are leaving extras with this vessel which includes: 2 10lb propane tanks new in 2022, a Magma BBQ with a 20 lbs. fiberglass tank, lifejackets, new flare kit 2023, and spare parts plus electric tools.

S/v Kajun Diva is a must see if you are looking for a proven sea worthy vessel without sacrificing comfort and luxury at sea. Your next adventure awaits!

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Lagoon-380-3

Description

vente catamaran lagoon 380

Production Numbers in 4 Figures Lagoon delivered over 1000 boats over the production lifetime. Line her up against the Lagoon 46 catamaran or the 42 and she still comes out as the top seller although production has now ceased. The 42 might overtake her at some point. The entry level boat at Lagoon is now the Lagoon 40, although sister company Excess has a 37 footer on its books: the Excess 11.

Circumnavigator The Lagoon 380 is a proven ocean crosser. She’s a sturdy, safe little boat that saw off the Lagoon 39 (also no longer in production) and continues to attract fans. She holds her value pretty well on the 2nd hand market too – quite a feat when you think of how many 380s are out there.

A Classic Catamaran This is an economical boat that is comfortable and has an acceptable level of performance. She’s no Ferrari (read our Gunboat 68 review if that´s more your budget). I would say she’s more of a Renault Espace. A reliable, solidly built catamaran that’s roomy for her size. How many other boats have this many hull numbers under their belt to feed back into the design process?

I can only think of the Prout Snowgoose. The L450 comes close.

  • The Lagoon 380 is one of the best selling catamarans ever (with the Lagoon 42), so it is tried and tested. And some! 380s are well built and safe.
  • She is comfortable for her size with those beamy hulls.
  • She is great value for money.
  • That compact size means it is easy to dock this boat -they are highly manoeuvrable with the twin engines. This boat turns on a sixpence.
  • Those vertical windows keep the sun out at midday and give you more living and head space.
  • She is a proven ocean crosser, even a circumnavigator.
  • The aft cockpit fits 6 people comfortably and feels secure.
  • You can’t leave the helm in both directions.
  • It isn’t the quickest catamaran, she’s slow to get going in light airs.
  • She is not great going to windward with those fat hulls and fixed keels. 55-60 degrees to true is probably optimal, with leeway. At 45 degrees, the speed drops off and the leeway picks up.
  • The quality of the interior finish is acceptable but it doesn’t wear that well.
  • Many of the older boats still have the soft top bimini.
  • Lagoon 380s do suffer from hobby horsing . Remember, this is a 37′ 11″ boat! On longer passages, you might want to move the anchor back off the front. Try and centralise the weight.
  • It´s not that easy to clamber up that high coach-roof

Lagoon’s signature vertical windows mean that you get the maximum space possible inside the boat for her length. Open up the double sliding doors and you have a decent sized area up top and the forward windows open right up to let the breeze flow through the boat at anchor.

Charter a Lagoon 380

Are you looking to charter a Lagoon 380? Browse our extensive list of Lagoon 380’s for rent below ⇓

Find a well maintained Lagoon 380 for charter.

Acceptable Performance You can expect to sail at 6 to 9 knots in a decent breeze – perfectly acceptable for cruising. She won’t sail to windward like a dagger-board cat, but what were you expecting? You’ll probably be pointing at 55-60 degrees to true and doing 6 knots or so. Stick the leeward engine to get the speed up and head 10-15° or so higher.

Bear Away Off the wind, she’s a great little mover! You will see the low teens in decent conditions from time to time.

She does have a reputation for being a bit of a hobby horse when the waves get up, but we are talking a 38 foot boat, right? You might need to focus on getting weight off the nose and away from the stern for longer passages: try to centralise the weight as much as you can. All in all though, she’s a compact, cosy boat.

Construction

The 380 is not the lightest boat for her size- it is a production boat after all, but it does pack a decent sail plan with an SA/D ratio of 22 (square top mainsail option) which is higher than many of Lagoon’s current models.

The hull is solid fiberglass below the waterline and is cored with a mix of foam and balsa above the waterline. Lagoon use a vinlyester resin in the outer layers of the laminate to protect against blistering. The deck is balsa-cored with solid laminate under the areas that need more strength.

Interior bulkheads are bonded to the outer sides of the hulls.

lagoon 380 salon

Cosy with Guests The saloon table and seating area is really cosy- great for entertaining, and you have a nav station, fridge and galley all in here. Pretty impressive!

The cabins are spacious for a 38 footer and the heads are functional.

The finish is not the highest quality, but it is acceptable at this price point and easy to fix. They are known to look tired quickly as the veneer damages easily, so you will need to look after her. The other big downside is the soft top bimini on older versions: you´ll just have to live with it at this price point, or dust off your wallet and add a hard top bimini and dodger.

The Hard Top Bimini Came Later Later versions have the hard top bimini as standard, with a neat sliding sunroof to poke your head out of. The mainsheet traveller remained on the aft beam.

Lagoon 380 S2

This being a yacht with such a long production run (1999 to 2019), the Lagoon 380 molds went through a few modifications. For example, Hull #35 (Serenity Now) was built in 2000, still almost 1000 hulls off the final production run tally. Barit is hull number 509, launched 2008.

The main upgrade (although owners of the original design would probably say it was a downgrade) was with the launch of the Lagoon 380 S2 in 2003.

The main changes they made were:

  • New shelves over the engine compartments
  • They moved the bulkhead of the shower forward in the Starboard Hull (more space inside, less in the forward locker).
  • Larger windows in the hulls
  • Sliding door for privacy in the owner’s hull (on the owner’s version of course)
  • Improved galley, sink and countertop
  • Improved helm dash (on later S2s)
  • Double helm seat (a good addition this)
  • Additional winch on the port side.

vente catamaran lagoon 380

Good Clearance Bridgedeck clearance is good and the sail plan will happily cover you from anything from 9 knots of wind to 35. You should be averaging 7 knots SOG most of the time giving you 150 nm a day- perfectly acceptable for safe long distance cruising.

The other thing is that it is difficult to see and trim the mainsail on a starboard tack given that the helm is on the port bulkhead. But this is not an issue that is unique to the 380.

Well Organised The running rigging is well thought out for short handed sailing. With an electric winch for the main halyard, she’s easy to handle on your own and Lagoon have over spec’d the standing rigging on this boat. She´s a safe little mover.

vente catamaran lagoon 380

You Won’t Overtake a Gunboat Upwind At 55 to true, she will sail. At 45-50 degrees, the speed drops off and you will be pushed sideways.

In light to moderate winds when close hauled, set the traveler to windward a couple of feet from centre & ease the main sheet a bit. Keep the momentum up before a tack and move the boat through the wind cleanly and steadily and she won´t stall.

At the end of the day, you´ll need dagger-boards to sail well to windward and that means less space and comfort. An older Catana would probably do it. The speed will drop off if you are sitting at 50 degrees or less to apparent, and in anything under 10 knots of wind you will need the engines on unless you have a bowsprit fitted and a Code 0 or gennaker to fly.

Put the first reef in at around 18 knots depending on your angle of sail & second reef when it blows over 25.

The 380 does hobby horse, so make sure that you move the weight back on longer passages (including the main anchor, for example). In a moderate to rough sea you may notice some slamming, especially going into the weather, but no more than comparable sized cats.

Under Power

The Twin Volvos 30s (well 29s) are more than enough to power you through the chop. Cruising speed with one engine is around 5 and a half knots, using around 2.5 litres per hour. Stick the other engine on and you will hit 7 knots comfortably, with 8 knots at Full Steam Ahead.

Very Manoeuvrable And with twin engines manoeuvering a relatively small cat, you’ll start to feel like you are an old hand in the marina in no time.

The engine rooms are well deigned as well, and easy to access.

Lagoon 380 Blogs

vente catamaran lagoon 380

Because the 380 is such a popular boat, there are quite a few good sailing blogs out there which are useful if you want to get a better feel for the catamaran.

From the Horse’s Mouth A good one is Sailing on the Sunnyside which all about a couple living the minimalist life on their 380: Sunnyside. She´s hull number 322, made in 2005.

You should also check out the blog archive of Seth from the Sailing Family. They circumnavigated on a Lagoon 380 called Honeymoon : that is worth a read.

They have now upgraded to an Outremer 51 (well, you would if you could, wouldn’t you?)

SV Straycat is another 380 blog on a 2000 Lagoon (hull # 24). There’s a great description of the boat on the blog.

Then there’s the Phase 2 Catamaran vlog. These guys are really out there enjoying themselves.

Lagoon 380 Plan

vente catamaran lagoon 380

Lagoon 380 Brochure

The stand out fact about the Lagoon 380 is that they have sold so many. You get what you pay for, of course, and with the 380 you get a lot for your money. Lagoon deliver exactly what they promise. These catamarans are great value for money and are easily able to stand up to regular private use, but make sure you keep on top of that ‘job list’. But that´s the same for any boat, right?

It’s a Clever Design The Lagoon 380 is a  clever compromise on volume versus performance, and she has a very good load-carrying capacity for a boat that is less than 40 feet.

She’s a classic catamaran.

Is the Lagoon 380 still in Production? No, Lagoon stopped making the 380 in 2019. Originally, it was going to be replaced by the 39, but they stopped production on that boat as well. The smallest Lagoon cat is now the 40. You might want to check out the Excess 11 which is part of the same Group – it’s a similar sized boat, but has aft helms.

How many 380s did Lagoon produce? They made around 1000. It is one of their top selling models behind the 42.

How much does a Lagoon 380 cost? There are plenty on the second hand market, but good examples hold their price and they remain popular. You can pick one up from €120,000 to €200,000 on the second hand market, we´d say you need to spend from 150-180k for a decent, well looked after boat. There are a lot of ex charter boats out there on the market – that’s fine, but they might need some money spent on them.

What are the Main Differences Between a Lagoon 380 and a Lagoon 380 S2? The shower bulkhead was moved forward in the S2 to create a bigger shower/head. Larger windows were used in the hulls and a sliding privacy door was installed in the owner’s hull. They improved the galley and remolded the helm station. These were all minor changes, more of a marketing update if anything, and many prospective buyers prefer the older boats which have more storage, better quality interior finishes and easier access to the engines. The first 380 S2 launched in 2003.

Lagoon 380 catamaran.

The Lagoon 380 is the smallest catamaran built by Lagoon at 38 feet and is known as the most successful cruising catamaran model. Introduced in 2000,  it was built to be a workhouse for the charter industry and an entry level-cruiser. It is a great entry level cruising catamaran that sails better than many other cats and provides lots of living space for the money.

Despite the small size the Lagoon 380 combines spacious accommodations normally reserved for much larger catamarans while still retaining decent performance. Charter versions of the Lagoon 380 have four staterooms and two heads. Owner versions have a master suite in the starboard hull that has a spacious bathroom with shower and head, in addition to a small office space.

The Lagoon 380 has above average performance and can reach speeds up to 10 knots in strong winds. With the wider hulls, weight and low aspect keels, the Lagoon 380 performance significantly decreases as you get closer to apparent wind. It is also slow in lighter winds due and most sailors will prefer to motor.

The main salon is spacious and provides 360 degree views of the world outside. It is fitted with the vertical windows that Lagoon is known for and a sliding  panel that opens up to connect the saloon and the cockpit. The saloon has able seating for a family or entertaining guests. However, it suffers from limited shelf space and a small navigation station that doesn’t have much room for charts or additional electronics.

The Lagoon 380 has a single station helm on the port side with a raised platform that gives good visibility. Most of the sail controls including the main halyard, main sheet and port jib sheet are accessible at the helm.   The hulls are built of solid fiberglass below the waterline and a mix of foam and balsa core above the waterline. The hulls are rather wide to accommodate double births and the bridge deck has 2.65 feet of clearance.

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

vente catamaran lagoon 380

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

vente catamaran lagoon 380

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

vente catamaran lagoon 380

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

vente catamaran lagoon 380

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

vente catamaran lagoon 380

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

  • Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation, Moscow
  • Guide to Russia

What is the history of Gorky Park?

  • In the pre-revolutionary period, Gorky Park was a city dump and wasteland, which was cleared in 1923 to host the All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition
  • In 1928, a huge park was planned on the former site of the exhibition. It would not just be a place of leisure, but a place to proudly display Soviet culture and daily life
  • Gorky Park has remained a cultural hub ever since, and has been renovated and added to over the years to make it one of Moscow’s top attractions today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park is the most famous park of Moscow, created during the Soviet period as a hub for relaxation and cultural activities. The park is beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, who visit in all seasons to stroll, enjoy sports, admire the park’s attractions, and attend cultural events. Gorky Park is the central part of an ensemble of four green spaces – Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve – which curve around the southern bank of the Moskva River to the south-west of Moscow city centre. Here you may spend some time and enjoy nature and contemprary art during your vacation in Moscow .

History of Gorky Park

Imperial russia.

In the 17th century, the eastern bank of the Moskva River beyond Moscow’s city limits was home to floodplain meadows, where palace horses grazed. From the mid-1850s, events such as cockfights, fistfights, and races were held here, and by the 20th century this area had become a city dump where the unemployed and homeless people of Moscow lived, which remained this way until the Soviet period. This wasteland lay in stark contrast to the adjoining Neskuchny Sad – ‘merry garden’ – which lay to its south, an area of aristocratic country estates and elaborate gardens.

Soviet Russia

Following the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin travelled around Moscow to find a suitable site for the first All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition, which would reveal opportunities for socialist development of agriculture and industry. Lenin decided on the wasteland alongside the Moskva River, which was cleared with a programme of community work. In 1923, the exhibition began. It encompassed 250 pavilions dedicated to different themes of agriculture and industry, and was divided into thematic zones, such as villages, livestock, crops, engineering, railways, republics of the USSR, and foreign countries. The organisation of the exhibition demarcated the future layout and size of Gorky Park, and the paths, ‘zones’, and main square of the exhibition have been preserved until the present day. In March 1928, Moscow City Council decided to establish a park of culture and recreation on the site of the former exhibition, which would also encompass the Neskuchny Garden. Moscow’s residents were instrumental in the construction of the park – they voiced their desires for events spaces, physical education and leisure facilities, and gave up their weekends to build the park. The park’s main architect was Konstantin Melnikov.

Did you know? Konstantin Melnikov also helped to construct Lenin’s Mausoleum and the Rusakov Worker’s Club, one of Moscow’s Constructivist masterpieces .

Over 100,000 Muscovites flocked to the opening of the park on 12th August 1928. The brand-new park was equipped with two theatres, a cinema, nursery, reading room, restaurant and café, music stages, sports arenas, rowing boats, and even a giant helter-skelter slide. Unfortunately, because of the vast size of the crowd and the general excitement, the park was damaged and closed until September.

Did you know? The park was not named after Maxim Gorky, writer and founder of Socialist Realism, until 1933.

In 1929, Betty Glan – at the mere age of 26 – became director of the park. She decided to reconceptualise it, uniting leisure, design, and ideology with the help of Moscow’s most eminent architects, designers and artists. Over the next decade, more cultural venues were established in the park, the Pushkinskaya Embankment along the Moskva River was developed, and the landscaping of the park was carefully cultivated. Architect Alexander Vlasov was particularly influential, and won the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris for his design of Gorky Park. This period under Glan’s directorship until 1937 was known as the ‘golden age’ of Gorky Park, which became not just a place for recreation, but a public space where Soviet culture and everyday life could be proudly displayed.

Did you know? During the Second World War topical events were held in Gorky Park, such as the championship in bayonet combat, grenade-throwing competitions, and air defence training. What’s more, an exhibition of captured enemy weapons – tanks, artillery, aeroplanes, and more – was organised in Gorky Park and continually updated throughout the war.

In the post-war decades new attractions were continually added to Gorky Park. These included the majestic 24-metre triumphal arch at the entrance to the park, an astronomical observatory (which remains open today), the famous Ferris wheel (unfortunately dismantled in 2008), and a fountain with lights and music.

Russia today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

The Gorky Park ensemble continued to flourish as a centre of culture and recreation in post-Soviet Russia. The adjoining Muzeon Park of Arts was founded in 1992, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Gorky Park in 2008. The ensemble underwent serious reconstruction in 2011. Many new sports facilities were added, including centres for beach sports and extreme sports, bicycle paths and sports equipment rental hubs, and much effort was devoted to reviving original buildings, sculptures, and landscape compositions. Two years later, the embankment of the Moskva River from the southern tip of Zamoskvorechye Island all the way to Sparrow Hills was redeveloped and pedestrianised, making it possible to peacefully walk or cycle along the Moskva for many kilometres.

What can you do at Gorky Park today?

  • Explore the park and see architectural attractions, fountains, and beautiful gardens
  • Visit Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gorky Park Museum
  • Go boating on the lakes and stroll down the Pushkinskaya Embankment
  • Rent bicycles or scooters, skateboard, and visit the sports centres

What can you do at Gorky Park?

Park attractions.

While exploring the treelined paths of Gorky Park, you’ll come across a number of attractions. To the west of the main entrance, near the river, is a beautiful geometric bandstand used for music and literary evenings in the Soviet period. As you head down the central alley of Gorky Park from the main entrance, you’ll see a statue of Maxim Gorky on your right, and discover the light and music fountain with its dancing jets of water – find the schedule of its performances here .

Did you know? Don’t be afraid to feed the red squirrels and birds you encounter on your walk around Gorky Park – there are even vending machines which sell special food for the animals!

The southern section of Gorky Park is occupied by the Golitsynsky Garden. In 1802, the Golitsyn Hospital was founded here as a hospital for the poor; it still adjoins Gorky Park today. Gardens were created as a relaxation place for patients, extending from the hospital building to the riverbank, and included landscaped gardens, a Chinese Bridge, and two ponds. On the riverbank is the Rotunda of the Golitsyn Hospital, which has been preserved since the 19th century. There is also a rose garden and fountain by the Bolshoi Golitsynsky Pond.

Did you know? In the Golitsynsky Garden is also located an unusual architectural monument – a public toilet designed by Alexander Vlasov in the 1930s, which is recognised as an ‘object of cultural heritage’!

Outdoor activities

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park’s extensive and varied grounds aren’t only good for walks! You can relax on the water by renting boats to sail on the Pionersky and Bolshoi Golitsynsky Ponds, or visiting the Olivkovy Beach on the Pushkinskaya Embankment to sunbathe. As well as this, you can hire bicycles, electric scooters, longboards or even roller skates to explore the park and embankments, play table tennis, visit the sports complex to play football, basketball, handball, badminton or volleyball, or visit the Vans skatepark or Nike sports centre for workouts and classes such as rooftop yoga.

Gorky Park Museum

Visit the Gorky Park Museum, located in the left pier of the entrance arch. The current exhibition is dedicated to Gorky Park in the ‘golden age’ of the 1930s, and shows the development of Moscow’s central park through the eyes of Betty Glan. There is an observation deck on top of the arch, which offers a lovely view over the park and Moscow’s skyline.

Did you know? In the entrance arch there is also a gift shop where you can purchase balls, frisbees, blankets, and other items to enjoy your visit to Gorky Park.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

Garage Museum

Photo from  https://muzeolog.com/

In Gorky Park you will find Garage Museum, Russia’s first philanthropic institution dedicated to contemporary art, founded in 2008 by Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova. 10 major exhibitions are hosted each year to showcase the work of established and up-and-coming artists. Also organised are a rich programme of events including curator-led excursions, workshops, masterclasses, lectures, concerts, performances, festivals, and film screenings at Garage’s outdoor cinema. Read our article about Garage Museum of Contemporary Art to learn more.

Food and drink

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants dotted around Gorky Park, where you can stop for a quick coffee or enjoy a long meal with a view. They include the stylish lakeside café Ostrovok (Little Island) and upmarket restaurant Vremena Goda (Seasons) which serve European and Russian food, colourful lakeside Thai restaurant Lebedinoe Ozero (Swan Lake), trattoria Merkato with its huge summer terrace, restaurant Syrovarnya (Cheese Factory) with a menu focused on its homemade cheese, food-truck court Restoparking which is stylised as a drive-in café, and ice-cream and tea shop Chaynaya Vysota.

What’s nearby?

Gorky Park is bordered by Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve. This huge ensemble curves for eight kilometres along the bank of the Moskva River, providing a beautiful oasis of green in Europe’s biggest city.

Muzeon Park of Arts

Muzeon Park

Photo from  https://new-magazine.ru/

Muzeon Park of Arts is the largest open-air sculpture museum in Russia, home to 1,000 sculptures by Soviet and Russian sculptors, including those by famous artists. A large part of Muzeon is occupied by the New Tretyakov Gallery , which houses Russia’s most complete exhibition of national art from the 20th century to the present day. The pedestrianised Krymskaya Embankment which extends alongside Muzeon has recently undergone redevelopment, and is one of Moscow’s most popular spots to relax.

Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is the oldest park in Moscow, founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who threw fantastic festivities in his manor house and gardens – neskuchny means ‘merry’ in Russian. Many other noble families also built their country estates in this area, which became a public park and garden after being acquired by the royal family. Today, the Neskuchny Garden is home to historical buildings, fountains, and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries, sports facilities, an open-air theatre, and a huge greenhouse which supplies flowers to Gorky Park.

Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve is a huge forest park lining the steep bank of the Moskva River and the only specially protected nature area near the city centre. It is home to ecological trails, ponds, natural springs, rare species of plants and animals, many spots for picnicking, cafes, and a mini zoo. At the bottom of the park lie the Vorobyovskaya and Andreevskaya Embankments, with promenades along the Moskva River, a beach, and piers offering boat trips. As with Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills is hugely popular for sports and outdoor activities in all seasons. A new winter sports complex with snowboarding, ice skating, and ski tracks and jumps is currently under construction. When the weather is pleasant, you can rent a bicycle to ride the 8 kilometres along the river from Muzeon to Sparrow Hills.
