X-Yachts X-35

One design racing is all the rage in europe and the latest from x-yachts is the x-35 one design. we stepped aboard the first in the country to see what all the fuss was about.

The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea, wrote Isak Dinensen, aka Baroness Karen Blixen, a Danish writer who lived from 1885-1962. So it was for us today. The prospect we faced was this: a new, promising, purpose-built One Design Danish yacht and, damn it, no sunshine or wind. But like Blixen said, once we hit the salt water, once the clouds parted and an albeit fickle sea breeze started building and filling the panel kevlar sails, we found the cure, our sailing fix. Well, actually, I was left wanting - more wind and a race, perhaps - but that's always the sign of a good race yacht... you want to get back out on the track.

"It's not the traditional club racer who is likely to be stirred into buying an X-35," explained X-Yacht's importer Andrew Parkes. "But, say, your Etchells owners who appreciated the virtues of One Design sailing, who perhaps likes the idea of heading overseas to race the big class regattas there." And, boy, there sure are some X-35 regattas planned this year in Germany, Britain, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland this summer.

And who's the local competition? Sydney Yachts, I guess. Though strictly speaking you can't compare the new X-35 (handy IRC TCC rating of 1.055) with a Sydney 36 (IRC TCC of 1.060), because the latter isn't a strict One Design yacht, both their respective agents do. The importers of the X-Yacht have crunched the numbers and reckon the fully-imported X-35 is within $20,000 of the Sydney 36CR when you spec it with things like carbon-fibre spinnaker pole, gas stove and compliance, portholes and everything else that is bundled with the X-35, such as fridge, pressurised hot water, shorepower connection and battery charger, holding tank, anchor and rode... but more of that later.

While both yachts fly a very a similar sail area, the Sydney 36CR has a 2150kg lead keel compared to 1700kg of L-shaped lead/cast iron keel on the X-35. As such, ballast ratios are 46 per cent for the Sydney Yacht and 39.5 per cent for the X-35. Are you still with me? I could go on comparing this and that, which sales people are inclined to do, tweaking things one way or the other but, no, enough of that. The place to sort that out is the racetrack. Let's just take the X-35 for what it is - a well made stiff Danish yacht that would be great around the cans and perfect on, say, a Sydney to Coffs Harbour Category Two race.

Though it would be an added bonus if there were ever enough of the yachts here to stage One Design races, the X-35 is a fun boat in its own right. Even in the fickle winds, the Niels Jeppesen-designed hull gave the impression it was keen, lively and slippery. Did I mention I was left wanting? And though we had perhaps eight knots of wind we hit speed of 6.5kts with the kite up, according to the paddle wheel and trick Tacktick wireless instruments on the mast base.

Zoom out. If not quite the big smoking run I had hoped for, then X-Yachts' new X-35 One Design - replacing the X99 that sold more than 600 units in 15 years - sure has been a tearaway success in Europe. The strict One Design yacht was launched last October, but before a boat had so much as kissed salt water 95 had been sold. At the time of writing, that figure had climbed to 135 yachts, there were growing regattas being held all over Europe, the X-35 was awaiting ISAF status as a recognised class, and the ready-to-race yacht had now arrived Down Under. It was heading to Hobart for a Tassie sailor coming out of a Masrm 920 or some such thing. Chalk and Danish cheese.

THE X-FACTORS From what I've seen of the X-Yachts the Danes do a fine job of boat building. The factory is 27 years young, founded and owned by Niels and Lars Jeppesen and a chap called Birger Hansen. With the Baltic and North seas in their backyard, X-Yachts are built necessarily strong, using galvanized steel girder frames laminated to the hull to distribute the loads from mast, keel and rigging. Marine-ply bulkheads are also bonded to the hull.

The X-35 is built to handle sea conditions with waves to 7m and winds to Beaufort 10, storm conditions, raging up to 55kts. Stability tests hadn't been carried out, yet, but I would expect it to pass the Sydney-Hobart criterion as per other X-Yachts. Though Hobart isn't the race for the X-35. Head north instead.

As with all good race boats, the weight has been kept out of the ends of the yacht, with water (100lt) and fuel (550lt) tanks amidships. Tinned wiring and diagrams are standard, the engine-start battery is the gel type, and the engine installation, that of a three-pot fresh-water cooled Yanmar 20hp with Saildrive and self-feathering two-blade prop, is carried out in such a manner as to be mindful of servicing and silencing requirements.

With the weight down low, where you want it, X-Yachts saves weight in the lay-up and uses sandwich construction, with polyester resin and E-glass in high-stress areas, and Divinycell coring, which is a kind of foam that I once made a cricket ball from that withstood years of pounding. Not surprisingly, the outer layer is vinylester resin to ward against osmosis. A nice touch - all the skin fittings or seacocks are flush to the hull.

Hull and deck are bonded and crew will appreciate the rolled edge - and maybe the pad-eyes for lifelines in the cockpit if they're (un)lucky - when they are camped on the windward rail, which is something European skippers reportedly found they needed to do, mustering every ounce of human ballast outboard when the wind hits 20-plus knots. At which point you should spare a thought for those Danes. Their sailing temperatures range from 0.5C in winter to just 17C in the height of summer.

The rudder, very responsive it was, too, is a spade shape, made from composite with a solid-aluminium stock to reduce weight. The wheel is racing-sized, 1500mm diameter, in sporty powder-coated black aluminium, with a good dose of Araldite firmly gluing my mitts to it during our trialling trials.

SAIL AND RACE PLANS The X-35 has a modern sail plan - the full set of class-racing panelled-Kevlar sails were provided by North's: battened mainsail, light-medium jib, medium-heavy jib, ORC heavy-weather jib, Code 1.5S light-running spinnaker (purple, as pictured, and flying best on a close reach) and Code 4S heavy-running spinnaker - with just a 108 per cent headsail for snappy tacking.

The tapered, double-spreader keel-stepped Nordic mast forms part of the high-aspect rig that derives most of its power from the 40.10 square-metre main compared to the 33.9 square-metre genoa. The spinnaker AP is 105.7 square metres, a good head of sail downwind.

The boat has a German mainsheet system, which takes the sheet under the deck where crew can't sit on it and helps with fast trimming by either trimmer or helmsman, with the full-width Ronstan Fredericksen traveller immediately ahead of the wheel. The race cockpit, perfect for three or four crew, puts all the lines within easy reach of the primary Harken two-speed 48 winches and there are big Harken Quattro 40s for fast spinnaker trim.

Speaking of good gear, all the sheets are Spectra, the rigging is continuous rod form, while the backstay is a beautifully fast but load-free system using what X-Yachts calls a Power Magic Wheel. On top of this the walk-through cockpit is easy to get around, with inboard benches, ergonomically moulded and grippy decks, solid rod kicker, and a reefing system that is single line.

A key-opened aft lazarette gives immediate access to the steering quadrant. Down below, meanwhile, the saloon dinette can be removed in a jiffy to make way for sail storage amidships, further ensuring the weight is kept out of the ends. No compromises. But there are comforts.

SMART RACER AND RESALE At the end of the X-35's effective racing life what do you have? Well, given its interior, you have a nice comfortable club racer that you can use for coastal regattas, too. Such are the comforts that there's more than a shell and, with the X-Yachts name and all that's happening in Europe, you should enjoy decent resale value.

Now about that interior. I was pleasantly surprised to find two nice, big (200cm x 130cm) symmetrical double cabins whose mattress rolls up the hull sides, seaberth/lounges flanking the saloon and a double stateroom behind a timber door in the bow. There are opening portlights and hatches, halogen lights, white wipe-clean vinyl liners, and a chipper atmosphere derived from blue and white-dotted upholstery and light satin mahogany joinery. Headroom is, at a guess, about 175cm.

At the entrance to the aft cabin on the starboard side in the navigation station with flip-up timber seat before the hinged chart table and switchboard, the yacht's top-loading 100lt Isotherm fridge with moulded insert is here and ready to load with refreshments. Across the companionway steps, which slide out for terrific engine access, is the portside galley. You get pressurised hot/cold water and a gimballed two-burner gas stove, plus a bit of storage. Reheat and eat or make a cuppa.

Those aforesaid seaberths flank what is a broad saloon bisected by the drop-leaf table with storage locker. As touched on, you can lift the table straight off the fixed stainless bracket to make your amidships sail locker. Yet more sea berths on those sailbags if so inclined. The head to starboard off the saloon has a manual loo, holding tank and gauge (thoughtful), while a door to port leads into the forward cabin.

That master cabin boasts a wardrobe with hanging lockers and storage shelves for the crew and/or club wear, plus further storage under the two-metre long vee double berth. A simple net separates the empty bow area from the berth, as there's no anchor locker. But it's all here for racing and sleeping and racing some more during those Cat 1, especially Cat 2, and Cat 3 offshore races and Category 4 short offshore jaunts. Appropriate safety gear needed, of course.

STARTER'S GUN There was no gun, but as the wind started filling in we cut the motor, which was the cue to start sailing. The X-35 works to windward really well, pointing high and with good speed in light airs. According to reports from the yacht's debut in Italy, figures like seven knots at 37-42 degrees true are typical. And all the while the helm was wonderfully balanced and very responsive. Adjusting for the lifts and knocks required little wheelwork.

Off the breeze, beyond The Heads, we managed to fly the all-purpose spinnaker, and do that while close reaching in sloppy sea conditions. Boat speed climbed to six knots or thereabouts in not much more breeze, said the chic Ticktack wireless instruments on the mast base. But that was about as far as we got before there was no wind at all. Left wanting alright. And there goes the sun. But I got a taste.

While there can be doubting the curative effects of saltwater, I hadn't worked up a sweat on the X-35. As for tears, they are improbable given that the Danish yacht is built tough. Tears of joy, more likely, as the prospect of a win or two in the club races and coastal jaunts is just around the windy corner for its Hobart owner.

I'll end on another quote of Blixen's: "One day at a time - this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful it will be worth remembering." So it was.

  • Plenty of beds, lounges, sail storage and comforts by way of hot water, stove and fridge for a racing yacht
  • No deck filler for water, tank opening is at galley

Share All sharing options for: How Morph went from Marvel cannon fodder to X-Men cartoon canon

Morph, a bald guy with no nose, looks off into the distance while a sentinel comes to life in a junkyard behind him.

If you were a fan of X-Men: The Animated Series , there’s a lot to look forward to with the reboot, X-Men ’97 . Is Charles Xavier truly dead? Will Cyclops ever find out that Cable is his son from the future? Will the show introduce any characters we’ve met over the past couple decades? Oddly enough, one lingering question involves Morph, a character most casual comics or MCU fans might not even know.

Kevin Sydney, aka Morph, is the original X-Men animated team member that time forgot, a minor character seemingly killed in the show’s pilot to kick off inter-team conflict as he was mourned out of proportion to his prominence. As comic stories usually do, Morph was eventually resurrected and had a surprisingly complex arc throughout later seasons. X-Men ’97 is turning the whole thing on its head: A character famous for being disposable is now an indelible part of the X-Men cartoon canon. And the team behind the reboot is treating him that way, with a whole new look and reconsideration as a nonbinary character. But what’s actually going on behind that blank, noseless face? What’s the deal with Morph?

OK, so who is Morph?

Sydney, a mutant shapeshifter, was originally a minor X-Men villain called Changeling. He was part of a lesser-known and short-lived group in the comics called Factor Three (which also featured more famous characters like the Blob) that fought our heroes starting in X-Men #37 . He only lasted a few issues before meeting an untimely death while he was impersonating Xavier. While he showed up a couple times in other series, he finally got his moment thanks to X-Men: The Animated Series.

First, his name was changed to Morph, out of concern that his name would raise the ire of DC Comics, whose character Beast Boy also went by the name Changeling. And then Morph was introduced with the rest of the team in the Animated Series pilot as a good friend of Wolverine (yes, it’s possible for the guy to have friends). When he’s killed by Sentinels, it devastates the team, especially Wolverine, who later kills a Sentinel by shouting “This one’s for you, Morph!” The idea at the time was for the show to have an early casualty that would set some high stakes, but without sacrificing a core X-Men character.

Beau DeMayo, former showrunner for X-Men ’97 , told Empire Magazine that Morph’s death was very impactful for watchers of the original series. “He really set the stakes, and he had a very interesting relationship with the team because of trauma,” he said.

Perhaps ironically, Morph’s role in the cartoon only bolstered his presence in X-Men comics, where he became best known as a member of the Exiles . He would show up in some classic Marvel arcs, including Age of Apocalypse and House of M . He’s not a major character by any stretch, but he’s been through quite a bit, including becoming unhinged from time, witnessing the death of his friends, and becoming unstable goo. It’s also always fun to see a character get a new lease on life after a cartoon or movie appearance.

In X-Men: The Animated Series , Morph would also return for a major arc of the show’s second season, when Mister Sinister resurrects him and brainwashes him into hating the X-Men. Morph is able to break through that hold at the end of the season, and while he rejoins the team briefly in season 4, he once again leaves due to the mental damage from his previous Sentinel confrontation. It’s a pretty sensitive portrayal of trauma, especially for a 1990s kids’ cartoon.

His only other appearance is in the series finale, where he teams up with the X-Men to fight against Magneto, who’s enacting his plan for mutant domination as Xavier slowly dies. Morph doesn’t do much here, but you can see him standing with the rest of the team at Xavier’s deathbed, which is where the new series will pick up.

What role will Morph play in X-Men ’97?

We don’t know much yet about what storylines the series will tackle, so it’s unclear if Morph will be a primary member of the team. What we do know is that the show creators made some changes, the biggest being a whole new look with a bald head, light gray skin, completely white eyes, and no nose, along with a nonbinary identity (it’s unclear what pronouns Morph uses, but the creators use he/him in recent interviews).

Morph from X-Men ‘97 on a 90s-styled trading card. He’s running at the camera in his X-Men uniform. The poster says “Marvel Animation. X-Men ‘97. Two-episode premiere March 20.”

People online did not take kindly to this revelation, with many saying that it was another forced change by Disney to make the series more woke or that the creators would be pushing a relationship between him and Wolverine.

However, the change makes a lot of sense. Shapeshifters can take on multiple genders, so there are many instances where these kinds of characters identify as nonbinary, or at the very least present androgynous, from Double Trouble in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power to Envy in Fullmetal Alchemist to versions of Loki in Marvel comics. Shapeshifters might even go so far as to mess with the man/woman biological paradigm. Just last year, after decades of retconning and uncertainty, Marvel confirmed that Nightcrawler’s father is actually Mystique, who transformed into a man and produced a baby with her longtime girlfriend/wife, Destiny.

This trope doesn’t speak to the experiences of all nonbinary people, but the idea of a character who isn’t confined to a binary gender spectrum — or a human spectrum, for that matter — fits right in with this idea. Why stick to one gender when you can change your physical form to look like anything ? Plus, Morph has played around with gender before, so to the team working on X-Men ’97 , the change just felt right.

“He attacks Wolverine, his closest friend, in the most dramatic way by turning into Jean Grey and putting his hand on Wolverine’s neck and leaning in for a kiss. That’s as nonbinary as you can get. It’s Morph turning into a woman and coming onto Wolverine to freak him out,” original cartoon creator Eric Lewald said in a Variety interview . “Now it’s become such a social thing that I think people will be more sensitive to how it’s used. That’s the only difference.”

X-Men ’97 will debut on March 20 on Disney Plus.

Sydney sweeney explains why 'madame web' flop was smart career move, sydney sweeney 'madame web' flop ... actually a smart career move, 198 3/20/2024 10:57 am pt.

Sydney Sweeney 's a hall of fame spin doctor, or she's got showbiz all figured out ... because she's explaining why the epic flop of "Madame Web" is actually good for her career.

The actress basically has a strategic business perspective on the film crashing and burning at the box office ... telling GQ UK she's seeing it as a smart move in the grand scheme of things 'cause her involvement in the film has strengthened her ties to the big wigs at Sony.

Sydney says starring in the flick opened doors she wouldn't have access to, otherwise.

Case in point, thanks to her connection with Sony, she managed to get her other movie "Anyone But You" made and even snagged the lead role in the new "Barbarella" movie -- all under the Sony umbrella.

As for directly addressing the "Madame Web" backlash ... Sydney's saying she was just hired as an actor, and was stoked to breathe life into the character.

But when it comes to the fallout from it flopping, she's cool with riding the wave wherever it takes her, especially since she's not in the producer's seat.

IYDK, back in 2020, Sydney actually launched her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, which helped the success of her other film, "Anyone But You," costarring Glen Powell .

"Madame Web" didn't quite hit the same mark -- barely scraping together $25.8 million domestically in its opening weekend.

But as far as Sydney's concerned, a movie's plot ain't a deal breaker when it comes to choosing scripts ... she's just focused on building professional relationships.

Translation: Syd's playing the long game!

BMW Neue Klasse

Bmw neue klasse x, bmw unveils the vision neue klasse x as the conduit to its future range of electric suvs.

Avatar for Scooter Doll

One week after teasing camouflaged images of the next chapter in its “Neue Klasse” EV design strategy, BMW has publicly unveiled the Sport Activity Vehicle to the public. The Vision Neue Klasse X is BMW’s latest entry into the SAV segment and represents the all-electric DNA of a new model that will begin production next year.

“Neue Klasse” (new class) is the designation German automaker BMW has given to its latest electrification strategy. Sure, BMW already makes several BEV models, but the Neue Klasse will be a new era of branded vehicles offering 30% more range, 30% faster charging, and a 25% improvement in efficiency.

BMW’s true vision for the Neue Klasse came to light publicly last year at IAA Mobility when the automaker unveiled the Vision Neue Klasse sedan , based on the i Vision Dee Concept seen at CES a couple of years ago.

At the time, we learned the Neue Klasse of vehicles will feature the  next generation of BMW iDrive , enhancing the driver’s digital experience while offering new personalized drive sounds. Frank Weber of BMW’s Board of Management, responsible for Development, elaborated on the improvements in Neue Klasse EVs:

Neue Klasse means BMW driving at an even higher level. The BMW of the future will have four totally new super-brains: high-performance computers working smartly together on what, up until now, was processed separately. We developed the first super-brain completely in-house. It integrates the entire powertrain and driving dynamics with up to ten times more computing power. The second super-brain will enable the next quantum leap in automated driving,” Weber continues. “Going forward, we will combine four key control units in a single high-performance computer. The result will be more dynamic performance, more precision, more efficiency, and even more fun to drive.

The next all-electric chapter to follow the Vision sedan will be the Neue Klasse X – a sports activity vehicle (SAV) teased by BMW last week . Today, BMW has shared a complete look at the new BEV, which features some design elements that are pretty out of character for the traditional German automaker. Have a look.

x yachts sydney

The message behind the debut of the X SAV today is one of vision (no pun intended) and rebirth, but also a focus on the design language that makes a BMW a BMW. BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse elaborated:

Together with the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X showcases the breadth of our future BMW model line-up. The Neue Klasse reflects the variety of all the models that customers want today and in the future – from sport sedan, with all its derivatives, to modern SAV family. In this way, we are underlining that the Neue Klasse is much more than just a car or a specific concept; it is redefining the BMW brand – and, at the same time, will be more BMW than ever.

While the Vision Neue Klasse represented the automaker’s plans for the future of all-electric sedans, the Vision X is a glimpse into its plans for its “X” range of SAVs and SUVs. BMW says the new BEV concept represents a new breed of vehicle with “active lifestyle, efficient dynamics, and a confident stance.”

The exterior features taller ground clearance, while the flat 800V Neue Klasse architecture allows for more interior space and a cabin decorated with warm textiles that are sustainably sourced and manufactured.

The future BEV models that will spawn from today’s X reveal will be designed based on three core principles, according to BMW: electric, digital, and circular. BMW points out a fourth dimension in this new SAV – driving pleasure.

There are no specs on this one, as it remains a design exercise. Still, there is plenty to look at inside and out if you’re a fan of BMW vehicles because the automaker intends to bring a lot of these elements with it to its third chapter in electrification. See more below:

Sydney Sweeney Just Found A Genuinely Novel Way Not To Wear Clothes On The Red Carpet

By Hayley Maitland

Back in 2002, Destiny’s Child released the three-minute-and-34-second song that is “Nasty Girl” , a single whose refrain has been regularly leaping into my head while looking at red-carpet images on Getty lately. You know the lyrics: “Nasty, put some clothes on, I told ya / Don’t walk out your house without your clothes on, I told ya.” You see, while I’m defiantly pro the “sleazy” and “freaky” in this world and adamantly anti-slut-shaming, I’m afraid that—from a fashion perspective—I’ve reached my threshold for any and all looks that the Mail Online might describe as “setting pulses RACING” or The Sun would accompany with a pointedly zoomed-in crop (“[Genetically blessed individual] narrowly avoids a wardrobe malfunction”).

Image may contain Ajuma Nasenyana Clothing Glove Person Formal Wear Adult and Wedding

It’s not that I don’t want people to express themselves however they choose; I’m fully with Madonna on that front. It’s just that I like looking at honest-to-God clothes more than gazing upon several acres of very toned, very tanned skin at any given premiere. Over the course of the 2020s—a decade which, I think we can all agree, has been absolute nonstop laughs–fashion journalists have spent untold hours thinking of ways to describe the designs that stars aren’t actually wearing. We’ve seen the emergence of the “nether navel” as an erogenous zone, an inexplicable penchant for “midriff flossing,” the evolution of “ bra-first ” outfits as a concept, and the revival of “ the naked dress ,” an oxymoron if ever there was one. That’s before mentioning the flagrant disregard for all forms of trousers that seems to have taken hold in Hollywood; going pantless might be tenable in balmy California right now, but, alas, not where I live—in London, where temperatures generally hover around True-Detective -corpsicle levels until at least April.

Image may contain Flower Flower Arrangement Flower Bouquet Plant Clothing Dress Fashion Formal Wear and Gown

Congratulations to Sydney Sweeney, then, for actually managing to source a “risqué” yet interesting look that no one in my office could quite find the words to describe (although I did enjoy a last-minute WhatsApp suggestion of “bosom bouquet”). While attending the premiere of her film Immaculate in LA on Friday, the 26-year-old sported a sculptural Balmain bustier adorned with motifs central to Olivier Rousteing’s fall 2024 collection for the maison, including sprays of roses and bunches of grapes–conceived by the designer as a tribute to the fragrant gardens and grand crus of Bordeaux, where he spent his childhood. It’s the second double-take-inducing look from the Euphoria star in as many days; she also posed for paps at the GLAAD Media Awards in a bespoke Miu Miu recreation of Julia Roberts’s maid-of-honour dress from My Best Friend’s Wedding on Thursday night. Two fashion coups in one week? Impressive.

Breaking Down How X-Men '97's Nostalgic Titles Compare to the Originals

Breaking down how x-men '97 's nostalgic titles compare to the originals, we go side-by-side with the iconic x-men: the animated series ' opening credits to see just how faithful x-men '97 's title sequence is..

Image for article titled Breaking Down How X-Men '97's Nostalgic Titles Compare to the Originals

X-Men ‘97 's release on Disney+ this week brings us practically right back to where the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series left off. The nostalgia is strong with the show right out of the gate, with its lovingly updated riff on the legendary theme song and the original show’s opening sequence. Let’s take a look at just how faithful it is.

x yachts sydney

The opening showing the Blackbird, Rogue, Storm, and the giant-sized X-font is practically identical, although of course ‘97 Storm now has her mohawk look in contrast to the original.

... My X-Men!

x yachts sydney

Similarly evocative is the panning shot into the Blackbird’s cockpit—although this time we get to see more team members in there, like newcomer Bishop, and Jean is, in true Jean style, allowed to be a bit more psychically dramatic next to Scott at the controls.

x yachts sydney

The power of a modern animated budget: when you need the letter X to detonate into a thermonuclear blast, you can afford to make the waves crash a little harder.

x yachts sydney

X-Men ‘97 plays some of these character card intros out of the order the original series did, but for the most part they are almost spot-on remakes. Never knock Scott’s glasses off.

x yachts sydney

Wolverine’s card is, for the most part, the same—including him starting out almost stark naked before his costume fades on, except in ‘97 's opening he’s not in a random jungle while that happens.

x yachts sydney

Rogue’s is almost beat-for-beat identical. Flyin’ high, sugah!

x yachts sydney

Once again, the major difference with Storm’s presence in these titles is that in ‘97 she has her mohawk. The elements she commands are still much the same.

x yachts sydney

It’s always very funny that The Animated Series gave Hank an almost creature-feature intro, considering he’s much more of the jovial sort in the show (unlike his dark turn in the comics). ‘97 keeps it faithful, but makes the background Beast stalks a bit more dynamic.

x yachts sydney

Similarly for Gambit, the action is the same, but his backdrop gets a little more flair.

x yachts sydney

Jubilee’s energy blasts are a little more fanciful in ‘97 , but you also really get to see how much the show has done redesigning her to better fit her Asian American background.

x yachts sydney

Jean, like Storm, gets a hairstyle change here—in the classic show she’s wearing a ponytail in this costume, but in ‘97 's her hair is down. Plus, her powers have a much more vibrant, dark undertone, perhaps hinting at something fiery to come for Marvel’s premiere swooner.

Professor X

x yachts sydney

Charles might be off recuperating in Shi’ar space by the time X-Men ‘97 opens, but he still gets a spot in the title cards, and now his vast telepathic power completely wraps around his floating chair. The combined power of psychic mastery and animation budget.

A World That Hates and Fears Them

x yachts sydney

The ‘97 titles do cut some brief action moments from the original opening, in order to accomodate new character titles for Morph and Bishop (and a sequence of Morph being haunted by the laughing spectre of Mr. Sinister, who brainwashed him into villainy after his seeming “death” in X-Men: The Animated Series ’ pilot episodes). But the scenes it does keep here, like Beast being targeted by swirling helicopters, are very faithful, give or take some shading techiques.

Night of the Sentinels

x yachts sydney

Likewise, another faithful shot, although in ‘97 we get to see it a bit more dynamically, Rogue still handily turns the tables on this encroaching Sentinel.

Charging Into Battle

x yachts sydney

The only difference with this side-on sequence is that we get a few more characters added to it to reflect the growing squad, as Bishop and the newly redesigned Morph join their allies.

Enter the Danger Room

x yachts sydney

Another faithful recreation is this brief moment of Scott and Storm battling robots in the Danger Room, the X-Men’s holographic training simulator.

Fancy Footwork, Ma Chère

x yachts sydney

And another great remake sees Gambit surrounded by helicopters as he spins through the air, staff in hand.

Magneto’s Brotherhood

x yachts sydney

Although we know Magneto joins the X-Men in ‘97 , having inherited Charles’ will, the opening titles still depict him as an antagonistic force alongside the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The line up for ‘97 is mostly the same, though it has some interesting swaps, bringing in Emma Frost and Lady Deathstrike instead of the bizarrely randomly placed Thunderbird and the small man in green with a big pink head—characters brought in from background appearances in the first season of the original show to balance out the “sides.” Speaking of...

Children of Xavier

x yachts sydney

The X-Men are almost identical here, but now they have Jean running alongside them too. Back to imbalanced!

Battle of the Atom

x yachts sydney

The two teams running head-on is exactly the same as it was, save for the aforementioned swaps and additions to either side.

x yachts sydney

And then of course, the titles are very similar, except for ‘97 adds, well... a ‘97.

Neolithic boats excavated in the Mediterranean reveal advanced nautical technology

by Public Library of Science

The first Neolithic boats in the Mediterranean

More than 7,000 years ago, people navigated the Mediterranean Sea using technologically sophisticated boats, according to a study published March 20, 2024, in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Juan F. Gibaja of the Spanish National Research Council, Barcelona and colleagues.

Many of the most important civilizations in Europe originated on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. During the Neolithic, communities clearly traveled and traded across the water, as evidenced by watercraft in the archaeological record and the presence of settlements on coasts and islands. In this study, Gibaja and colleagues provide new insights into the history of seafaring technology through analysis of canoes at the Neolithic lakeshore village of La Marmotta, near Rome, Italy.

Excavation at this site has recovered five canoes built from hollowed-out trees (dugout canoes) dating between 5700 and 5100 BC. Analysis of these boats reveals that they are built from four different types of wood, unusual among similar sites, and that they include advanced construction techniques such as transverse reinforcements.

One canoe is also associated with three T-shaped wooden objects, each with a series of holes that were likely used to fasten ropes tied to sails or other nautical elements. These features, along with previous reconstruction experiments, indicate these were seaworthy vessels, a conclusion supported by the presence at the site of stone tools linked to nearby islands.

The first Neolithic boats in the Mediterranean

The authors describe these canoes as exceptional examples of prehistoric boats whose construction required a detailed understanding of structural design and wood properties in addition to well-organized specialized labor.

Similarities between these canoes and more recent nautical technologies support the idea that many major advances in sailing were made during the early Neolithic. The authors suggest there may be more boats preserved near La Marmotta, a potential avenue for future research.

The authors add, "Direct dating of Neolithic canoes from La Marmotta reveals them to be the oldest in the Mediterranean, offering invaluable insights into Neolithic navigation. This study reveals the amazing technological sophistication of early agricultural and pastoral communities, highlighting their woodworking skills and the construction of complex vessels."
