The Bering 18 luxury yacht is the fourth collaboration project in the series of 15m-24m (50′-80′) Bering Yachts Steel Oceangoing Motoryachts. The design is based upon Bering Yachts fully engineered semi-custom design.

Images of the new Bering 18 explorer yacht were presented at Trawlerfest 2012 in Florida with the customer feedback being very positive. Also presented was a scale model of the Bering 24 superyacht also styled by Sabdes.

The Bering 18 yacht is one of the most voluminous 18m vessels around. With 5.7m (19′) beam she is unique in the vast accomodation space she can offer for this size vessel.

Sichterman delivers its first yacht: the inveni 18m, launched at the sichterman shipyard in workum, the netherlands..

Sichterman-Inveni-18M-54FT-launch-aluminium-luxury-yacht

Sichterman’s first yacht was launched this weekend at the shipyard in Workum, Friesland. The aluminium Inveni combines elements of the famous Dutch Lemsteraken sailing vessels with innovative luxury motor yacht design. With other vessels soon to hit the water, the release of first Inveni, shows that Sichterman Yachts has really taken off.

The official launch of the first Sichterman took place at the wharf where the yacht was built from A to Z. With over 35 years of experience in building sailing vessels and motor yachts, Workumer Yachtservice is as trustworthy with the complete process of constructing a yacht, as any in the business.

The Inveni is the kind of vessel on which its owners can travel from the Russian to the Mediterranean Sea. The vertical bow gives the Inveni a classic appearance, which is what designer Cor D. Rover aimed for.

The timeless design of the Inveni, is combined with the latest in innovations from the super yachting world. The Hull Vane and the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF), both designed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects and never used in a single vessel of this size, work together to make the yacht generate less waves, have a longer range at cruise speed and a lower fuel consumption.

On top of this, the Seakeeper technology eliminates boat roll significantly.

“Our client mister van Hilst challenged us to push technological limits to a new level and deliver a 5-star luxury experience.”

Sichterman CEO Bart Rehe says, “Our client mister van Hilst challenged us to push technological limits to a new level and deliver a 5-star luxury experience. Being a former sailor, he wanted the yacht to be as quiet as possible, whilst maintaining a high level of comfort and fuel efficiency at the same time. And that we’ve succeeded.

We’re proud to say that the Inveni accomplishes a fuel saving of 20%.”

It were these qualities that owner Ruud van Hilst looked for, when he researched the motor yacht industry. With a long and successful background in competitive sailing, van Hilst wanted the best of both worlds.

“Sichterman turned out to deliver exactly what I envisioned. The team and its partners, consisting of Workumer Yacht Services, Van Oossanen Naval Architects and Cor D. Rover, did a great job translating my wishes into a yacht that is safe, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.

After a few tests, I can say that I’m extremely satisfied with the way the ship handles itself in open water. It really cruises through the waves, almost as if you’re on a train.”

“As a man who always sailed sailing vessels, it was quite a big leap to acquire a luxury yacht, but so far I’m very happy with my decision. ”

“As a man who always sailed sailing vessels, it was quite a big leap to acquire a luxury yacht, but so far I’m very happy with my decision.

Next to this, partly decisive for choosing Sichterman, is their service and boat management program. This total care package assures that I can focus on what I love to do: sailing and exploring the world by water.”

The full interview with Ruud van Hilst about his newly acquired Sichterman can be read here.

Yachting World cover

Two new Owen Clarke explorer yachts for high latitudes cruising

  • Toby Hodges
  • November 23, 2023

The Owen Clarke design studio currently has two bespoke yachts in build, both featuring a host of elements designed to make them proper explorer yachts

yacht 18m

A well established and regarded name in the offshore racing world, the Owen Clarke studio has in recent years been making a reputation for its bespoke explorer yacht creations. The most notable is arguably the 2018-launched 20m Qilak which was the cover model and main feature boat in Yachting World’s May 2019 issue.

It helps that naval architect Merf Owen has plenty of high latitudes cruising experience, and that his wife, Ashley Perrin, is an ice pilot and expedition leader who has been taking yachts to high latitudes for nearly a decade. The couple have just completed a circumnavigation of Newfoundland via Greenland and Labrador.

Owen Clarke currently has two notable alloy explorer projects in construction which have spawned from Qilak in terms of looks, layouts and learnings: a lift keel 15m and a centreboarded 18m.

yacht 18m

15m Explorer Yacht Lynx

This 15m Explorer Yacht Lynx is very much a descendant of Qilak , and is even dubbed ‘little Qilak’, thanks to its similar looks, its hydraulic lifting keel, twin rudders and pilothouse. The latter is expansive enough to incorporate a watchkeeping station and a pilot berth.

A multipurpose and multi-climates yacht, Lynx is both a bluewater cruiser and a high lats explorer, capable of transiting the Northwest Passage. A private yacht designed for a Swiss owner, it complies with the MGN 280 code to allow for commercial/charter voyages in all oceans and polar regions.

“ Lynx represents the latest in small explorer yacht design, aimed specifically at families/small groups for short-handed, fast passages and with the ability to then remain in remote areas without support for prolonged periods,” Allen Clarke explains.

This is a true explorer yacht in that it is ice rated and built accordingly with double frames and an ice belt in the hull. The tank capacities are particularly capacious and help give an extensive cruising range under motor of over 3,000 miles.

Clarke explains how they can use VPP programming based on motorsailing and when the engine goes on to help calculate fuel/tankage: “It’s the same stuff we use on race boats but here we’re using it for a remote cruising boat.”

yacht 18m

The designers’ assumptions were made on having a watermaker, 800Ah batteries and an 80A 24V alternator. Four major passages were analysed, ranging from the 2,000 miles of a Northwest Passage to the 7,500 miles from Europe to Montevideo, Uruguay, as well as spending up to 60 days aboard. Fuel usage from motoring, charging batteries and heating for the Reflex stove were calculated leading to the conclusion that the spec for 1,570lt of diesel with 200lt reserve in the day tank seems more than ample for this design.

18m Explorer Yacht OC188

Designed for extended remote cruising including a circumnavigation, OC188 is six months into its aluminium construction at alloy experts KM Yachtbuilders in Makkum. Its experienced owner wanted an easily handled yacht with good performance together with the volume that could accommodate an owner’s cabin and three double guest cabins.

A low aspect ballasted keel with lifting centreboard helps provide the desired shoal draught of 1.4m while giving sailing performance and pointing abilities when lowered to 3.8m. Meanwhile twin rudders help allow for the yacht to lay up safely.

The decision between this and a full lifting keel such as aboard Lynx – also designed my Owen Clark – comes down to the added performance benefits of a deeper keel and whether you can live with the keel case in the interior, says Clarke. In this case it was not deemed necessary to impact the interior to that extent, especially as the owners plan to spend long periods of time aboard.

The OC 188 is a distinctive, purposeful looking design. Standouts include the amount of covered and protected space and the solar capacity on the pilothouse and fixed bimini. The aft cockpit and transom design also looks innovative as it includes a large lower deck to store a solid tender (the owner did not want a garage such as aboard Qilak). Instead the dinghy is launched via an Atlas heavy lift carbon davit, which can mount in several locations. This then leaves an expansive aft terrace for lounging at anchor.

18m blue water cruiser build commences at KM Yacht

Posted on 1st june 2023.

Owen Clarke’s latest cruising yacht design has commenced construction at KM Yacht builders’ yard in Makkum, Holland. The 18m yacht has been designed as a live aboard blue water cruiser for operation in tropical climates but also for exploring high latitudes. The client is an experienced yachtsman having previously owned a Boreal 45 and intends to circumnavigate with his new sailboat. Project 188 has also been designed such that in the future she can be sold and be commercially coded (MGN280) by any buyer looking to use her for charter.

The project draws on Owen Clarke’s experience as short-handed racing and cruising yacht designers and KM’s background of delivering turn key blue water expedition type yachts. 188 will be easily handled by a crew of two and with the space to comfortably accommodate a further 6 additional guests. As well as ease of handling, sailing performance and feel was a primary requirement of the owner: The boat has a lifting centreboard with a sailing draft of 3.8m and above deck a carbon mast and sailplan also optimised for short-handed sailing with two of the headsails and the downwind reaching sails flying off halyard locks.

For a yacht of this size she has an impressive volume of storage space concentrated in three areas: An aft workshop and storage for a trail bike accessible from both the interior and through a large hatch in the cockpit floor. A storage room to port adjacent and below the main salon which includes a dedicated storage space for stand-up paddle boards and other sporting equipment.   The mandatory large foc’sle is appropriately sized for extended passage making.

Substantial solar arrays have been incorporated into the pilothouse roof and the hard top bimini. Access, serviceability and ease of use of all systems has been a specific requirement with careful thought being given to integrate details such as multi positions for the heavy lift carbon deck davit, topside boarding gates to ensure easier access to the deck when alongside a marina dock and the fine weather foldaway outboard helm seats all combine to create a very special yacht for exploring far-flung cruising grounds.

infiniti 60 foil-assisted catamaran superyacht concept yachts

Infiniti 60: Concept Yachts presents new 18m foil-assisted catamaran

British yachtbuilders Concept Yachts and Infiniti Yachts have teamed up to introduce a new 18.3-metre multihull model to the market. Named Infiniti 60 Powercat, the yacht has sporty coupé styling and foiling technology that aims to reduce fuel consumption by 35 per cent.

The yacht will be built in Southampton and will be the bigger sister of past Infiniti 36 and Infiniti 52 models, building on the successful existing collaboration between Concept Yachts and Infiniti Yachts.

The yacht is designed for use as either a superyacht tender, a fishing vessel or as a compact liveaboard, with plenty of scope for customisation and the option to include two, three or four cabins. There are two main formats available; the standard is the Coupé, while there is also a Grand Tourer Flybridge version.

Design Unlimited has been brought in to style the yacht, and working together with Infiniti Yachts and Concept Yachts, has given the yacht a relatively modest beam of six metres which allows the yacht to berth in conventional slips. The catamaran is also "beachable", meaning it can transition from sea to land with ease.

Efficiency has been a top priority in the yacht's design, and the yacht has been built in resin-infused carbon fibre with multiple propulsion options available, including petrol, diesel and electric.

Infiniti 60: Concept Yachts Presents New 18m Foil-Assisted Catamaran [In the News]

Infiniti 60: Concept Yachts Presents New 18m Foil-Assisted Catamaran [In the News]

August 31, 2023 3:55 pm

This article was featured on boatinternational.com in August 2023 and was written by Katia Damborsky.

British yachtbuilders Concept Yachts and Infiniti Yachts have teamed up to introduce a new 18.3-metre multihull model to the market. Named Infiniti 60 Powercat, the yacht has sporty coupé styling and foiling technology that aims to reduce fuel consumption by 35 per cent.

yacht 18m

The yacht will be built in Southampton and will be the bigger sister of past Infiniti 36 and Infiniti 52 models, building on the successful existing collaboration between Concept Yachts and Infiniti Yachts.

yacht 18m

The yacht is designed for use as either a superyacht tender, a fishing vessel or as a compact liveaboard, with plenty of scope for customisation and the option to include two, three or four cabins. There are two main formats available; the standard is the Coupé, while there is also a Grand Tourer Flybridge version.

Design Unlimited has been brought in to style the yacht, and working together with Infiniti Yachts and Concept Yachts, has given the yacht a relatively modest beam of six metres which allows the yacht to berth in conventional slips. The catamaran is also “beachable”, meaning it can transition from sea to land with ease.

Efficiency has been a top priority in the yacht’s design, and the yacht has been built in resin-infused carbon fibre with multiple propulsion options available, including petrol, diesel and electric.

The retractable DSS foil comes as standard, and Gordon Kay, founder of Infiniti Yachts, was integral to developing the DSS that is fitted on the Baltic 142 foiling yacht CANOVA.

Senior Centers in Cape Coral

What happened? A few years back we had two very vibrant well functioning Senior Centers. Now we are clustered together in the Kennedy Senior Center because the Yacht Club was closed for remodeling even before Ian. And after Ian we lost the Kennedy Center as it was used for FEMA.Seniors lost almost a year, scrambling around looking for places to play games and socialize. Now that we have only one Senior Center, not as many gaming choices are available. How will the remodeled Yacht Club meet our expectations? It is yet to be seen. You can't experience it until you can walk the campus and see what it takes to get to where you want to go. Parking garages for an aging population may be difficult for many seniors to navigate. Can we ask the City of Cape Coral to give seniors their own dedicated building with ample parking around it, so they will not have to fight for parking spaces with visitors to the beach and the popular restaurant? A Senior Center doesn't have to be in the Yacht Club area, seniors aren't interested in running their toes through the sand and eating at the restaurant, they want to play games, learn new skills, and socialize with friends.Well, we can ASK, but will we get it? What do you THINK?

Vietnam vets statue

First let me state that the U.S. Vietnam Armed Services have been maligned while on active duty by the hippies and especially Hanoi Jane and even after the war was over. It was not their choice to go to war; they were following the orders of the political administration in office at that time.

American Legion Post 404 had the Vietnam Memorial Wall here on Marco Island three times that was viewed by thousands of people on the island and off the island with no problem with the city administration at that time.

Having stated that I would like to address what the American Legion Post 404 has been working on a Vietnam statue to be placed on the veterans portion of Veterans' Park for the past couple of years. Based on the information I received I am having difficulty understanding as to why the city had several hurdles for them to jump over to get this Vietnam statue made and placed in the veterans portion of the park. This statue is to honor those Vietnam veterans and will be an attraction for those who live here and visit here.

Hence, I am encouraging city management and City Council to approve this project based on the final hurdle that has been met for all to see.

Is growth in Florida sustainable versus preserving its natural resources?Balancing growth and preserving natural resources is a challenge not unique to Florida but one that resonates strongly due to its diverse ecosystems and rapid population growth.Sustainable growth involves planning and development that minimizes environmental impact, conserves resources, and enhances quality of life for current and future generations. In Florida, this balance is often contentious. On one hand, the state relies heavily on tourism and development for economic prosperity. On the other, the unique ecosystems such as the Everglades, coral reefs, and wetlands are crucial for biodiversity, water filtration, and storm protection.Efforts to manage growth sustainably include smart urban planning, land use regulations, conservation easements, and investment in renewable energy and efficient infrastructure. However, the challenge lies in enforcing these measures effectively amidst competing interests and pressures from population growth and economic development.Community engagement, political will, and innovative approaches are essential for Florida to navigate this delicate balance between growth and conservation effectively. Collaboration between government, businesses, environmental organizations, and citizens is crucial to ensure a sustainable future for the state.Visit FloridaRightToCleanWater.org and participate in steering the State of Florida in the right direction. Heat law unconscionable

On April 11, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law the extremist HB 433 that will endanger the health and lives of thousands of outdoor workers in Florida. The summer months in Florida bring scorching temperatures and high humidity levels, posing serious health risks for outdoor workers. Furthermore, the absence of mandated water breaks exacerbates the situation, as dehydration can set in rapidly under intense heat, leading to serious health complications and even fatalities.Despite these hazardous conditions, this law would keep local government from enacting legislation to ensure that employers implement adequate measures to protect their employees from heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. It is unconscionable that in a state like Florida, where extreme heat is a common occurrence, there can be no laws in place to safeguard the well-being of workers who are exposed to these conditions. Every worker has the right to a safe and healthy work environment, and it’s disheartening that the Florida legislators would pass such a bill. It’s even more distressing that the governor would approve it.Farm and construction workers are not disposable or collateral damage. No one should have to risk their health and safety in order to earn a living. It is the responsibility of our lawmakers to enact policies that prioritize the well-being of all workers. Jane Schlechtweg, chair, Collier County Democratic Party

The wrong dictator

I’m an American, and worked in Asia for more than 20 years. There is a joke about dictators in the region and it may be worth considering in our upcoming election.

South Korea was led by a dictator from 1961-1979. He oversaw the modernization of the country and was followed by another dictator before pro-democracy groups forced fair elections. Using 2023 rankings, South Korea’s Nominal GDP per Capita ranking is 35 th  in the world and on the Corruption Perception Index it is ranked 32 nd .

Singapore was led by a dictator from 1959-1990. His rule created a modern and hugely successful country. Using 2023 rankings, Singapore’s Nominal GDP per Capita ranking is 5 th  and on the Corruption Perception Index it is also ranked 5 th .

The Philippines was led by a dictator from 1965-1986. His rule was infamous for its corruption and brutality. Using 2023 rankings, the Philippine’s Nominal GDP per Capita ranking is 129 th  and on the Corruption Perception Index it is ranked 115 th , well into the bottom half of countries.

The punchline of the joke is that the Philippines got the wrong dictator!

So, for all those individuals who are convinced America needs a dictator, with a free hand to do whatever they please, at the very least consider the quality of the person you’re trying to elevate into that role. For America’s sake, consider the long-term consequences of your actions and choose well. For those who want to protect our democracy, vote for Joe Biden.

Trump detractors get it wrong

A couple of articles about Trump appeared in Your Turn in Sunday's paper.  Both writers are military veterans. Each has a strong academic background and they have another common trait: Each dislikes Trump.  But Trump does not deserve the incomplete quotes or other less than true statements about him.  For instance, the bloodbath quote, partially written by writer one says: “It's going to be a bloodbath for the country. That'll be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country."

Here is more of the quote: " …..Now, we're going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you're not going to be able to sell those guys if I get elected. Now, if I don't get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole – that's going to be the least of it.

Bloodbath has more than one definition, look it up.  His reference comparing Trump to Hitler is absurd and suggesting Trump’s supporters are miscreants, is far out of line.

The second writer calls Trump a dictator (remarkable given Biden's work to turn the country into a Marxist nation). Trump never acted as a dictator when in office and this is what he said about being a dictator: "Except for day one. I want to close the border, and I want to drill, drill, drill." Great!

Also, the second writer should know that Trump was not charged with insurrection.  He did not lead anything! The second writer also takes a shot at the “free” state of Florida.  As of 2022, 22.4 million people (and growing) seem to love living in this “free” state.

Finally, the second writer thinks our pols need a reason for supporting Trump.  Just look at his accomplishments as president vs. the mess that has been created by Biden. That is reason enough!

Nick Blauwiekel, Naples

Republicans will blame Biden

All caring citizens of the U.S. should be alarmed and ashamed at the inaction of primarily the Republican disarray at the moment in view of the vital military aid now long overdue to a struggling Ukraine who have bravely held off the Russian onslaught and destruction of their country. Despite long odds, their bravery and superior performance in military strategy has humiliated Russia; their losses are staggering and internal opposition is starting to have results. It is the influence of soon to be criminally convicted Donald Trump pressuring weak kneed Congress who fail to see not only the value in having Ukraine succeed militarily, but ensure that a belligerent Russia does not succeed in just marching into anybody's country, destroying its government, and dominating a heretofore free people. History shows It has happened before in Eastern Europe and it will happen again no doubt without key American aid in munitions and military hardware vital to their efforts. Wake up Congress, we, the West, will ultimately take the blame if Ukraine's efforts fail and the blame Republicans will say: yes, that happened because of Biden.

Vincent C. McCarthy, Cape Coral

Abortion policy

Trump’s abortion policy should have been three sentences: As a Christian, I am against abortion. As an American, I do not force my religious beliefs on others. As a politician, I will implement what the people want.

Tom Tess, Estero

Diversity, equity and inclusion

It is now being reported that two-thirds of universities now require diversity, equity and inclusion classes to graduate. Forcing DEI on students and businesses is turning out to be an idea almost as bad as defunding the police. While diversity is fine we already live and work in the most diverse country on earth. Inclusion is too broad based. Too often well qualified candidates for jobs are now excluded just to satisfy this deeply flawed concept. The biggest problem is the equity provision. Equity in all forms must be earned. Even the caveman knew if you didn’t go out and hunt you didn’t eat. We live in a merit based society and up until the last few years that idea was well entrenched and respected. Someone recently said DEI stands for didn’t earn it. I say it’s like communism. It sounds good. It doesn’t work. John McWilliams, Fort Myers

Demise of women’s rights

In 1920, American women were given the right to vote after a hard fought suffrage battle for a constitutional amendment.  In 1965, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized that American women had the right of birth control.  In 1973, the Supreme Court recognized a woman’s right to an abortion during the first two trimesters of a pregnancy.

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the Constitution does not confer such an abortion right and that states are free to regulate abortions.

This past week, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that an 1864 law banning nearly all abortions is enforceable. On Wednesday, Republicans in the Arizona Legislature blocked efforts by Democrats to repeal the 160-year-old law.

Florida’s six-week abortion ban is set to go into effect next month.  To date, 14 states have a total abortion ban, seven states ban abortion at or before 18 weeks’ gestation and  20 states ban abortion at some point after 18 weeks.

During the past month, 145 congressional Republicans signed a brief to the Supreme Court, urging the Court to revive enforcement of the national Comstock Act of 1873 which not only prohibits abortions but also denies the right to birth control.

We are witnessing the demise of women’s rights.  The frailty of those rights has never been more apparent.  Unless Americans elect liberal senators and congressmen,  women’s reproductive rights will disappear before their very eyes.

Sally Lam, Naples

Voting for Trump

I read with interest the article in Sunday’s paper about younger voters not wanting to vote for Biden or Trump, so may opt to not vote at all in the upcoming election. As a senior citizen, I share the same opinion. However, what will take me to the polls to vote is the concern that Kamala Harris may become president should something happen to Biden. To me, that would be harming America to its fullest. She has never demonstrated her ability to lead this country. And for that reason, I’m going to vote for Trump.

Cynthia Emmerich, Cape Coral

Comparing Trump, OJ trials

It was a case of jury nullification.  The consensus among commentators is that OJ’s Dream Team outlawyered the prosecutors, and this is probably true, but the case was decided even before the trial started.  There was no way an LA jury, with mostly African Americans on the panel, was going to convict OJ of anything.  The facts of case didn’t matter; the jury was going to stick it to the racist LAPD, the horrific beating of Rodney King still fresh in their memories.

But look how far we’ve come, you say: Derek Chauvin was convicted in the death of George Floyd.  Really?  Does anyone believe that if the girl at the scene had not recorded Floyd’s murder, the case would even have come to trial?

Strange how Donald Trump’s coming trials mirror the OJ case.  For the MAGA cult, facts don’t matter; we could have video of Trump having sex with Stormy Daniels and afterwards writing a check to keep her quiet.  Wouldn’t matter; one MAGA juror on the panel and we’ve got a mistrial.  Facts are how we arrive at the truth, but if you don’t trust the institutions providing the facts, you won’t trust the facts.  This is why Trump world continually insists the FBI is corrupt; the judiciary can’t be trusted; the media is the enemy of the people.  The only source for truth is Donald Trump, but he’s a pathological liar.

Ray Clasen, North Fort Myers

Interest in golf wanes

Quite a bit of sports coverage (including The News-Press) has focused on why viewer interest in golf has been declining. The most attributed reason of the speculation has  been the controversary over the PGA/World DP tour and the upstart LIV tour. Now the media can add the TGL (Interactive Golf League).

Perhaps the real reason for viewer drop off is much more simple: Golf was a sport that was about integrity and now has shown it is just about the money.

Steve Wiener, Fort Myers

It’s a no-brainer

With the Middle East a tinderbox like the Balkans precipitating the outbreak of World War I, voters in this country have a clear choice of whom they want at the helm between the two major presidential candidates:  the incumbent, an elderly sagacious moderate man with years of experience on the international stage and good relationships with America’s allies who respects the national security experts; or the challenger, a nearly as old   tempestuous egomaniac who boasts of not reading briefing data, denigrates national security personnel, and whose chief attributes seem to be firing aides and staffers, threatening allies, and insulting people.

Or, they could opt for a third choice, a man with a famous surname and well-regarded lineage who is pre-occupied with opposing vaccinations and flirting with fringe conspiracy theories.

The choice couldn’t be easier; like the challenger, it’s a no-brainer.

Marshall H. Tanick, Naples

MOREMAN Restaurant at Avrora Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

There is varied menu: raw bar with good sea-urchins, hot and cold starters, main dishes and desserts. Good cocktails and wine card. There is a big terrace. This club is located near the water (it’s obvious:) ), but the view is a partly industrial -... there is construction on the opposite bank and this ruins the view. This restaurant is spacious and it suits for different events. More
