I'm glad to see that. Obviously Edson couldn't keep it forever at his age. Glad to finally see a US boat company acquired by a boater instead of a venture capitalist.

This will be interesting to watch for a few years. AYC has a huge chunk of property on the St.Lucie river with loads of room to build sheds and larger haul out or syncro lifts. Much easier to get your product to marker via the east coast for sure. Christensen says that the lake Telico plant in Knoxville is a go once again now that the economy for yachting has turned the corner for them and the Vancouver plant is running at full capacity with 3 years of scheduled builds

US superyacht builder Westport Shipyard under new majority ownership

US superyacht builder Westport has been acquired by Westport, LLC, an ownership group that includes members of Louisiana's Chouest family.

The Washington-based builder celebrated its 50-year anniversary in 2014. The builder has three locations in Washington state and a marina and sales office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The builder is renown for its composite built, semi-custom superyachts. Gary Chouest is an owner of one of the larger yachts in Westport's lineup.

'Gary has always been passionate about our industry, and we are honored to count him as a customer, and now our majority owner, as well,' says Westport’s President Daryl Wakefield. He will remain in his post, alongside General Manager Dave Hagiwara and Westport's senior management team and employees. Westport employees more than 400 employees.

The Chouest family primarily has holdings in the oil and gas marine transportation industry. They also own custom sportfish yacht builder American Custom Yachts, based in Stuart, Florida.

The mood at Westport post-acquisition is upbeat, and the investment influx should bring new visions from the shipyard. Ron Nugent in the Florida office confirms this notion and hints at exciting new action coming from Westport, which has its own in-house vessel design and development team. 'We are always tweaking our products,' Nugent adds, in reference to Westport's commitment to updating its popular models. 'You will be hearing a lot more from us.'

Chouest buys Washington yacht builder

Galliano shipbuilder Gary Chouest is a lead investor in a group that has bought one of the largest yacht builders in North America.

Chouest and members of his family are part of Westport LLC, a group that purchased Westport Shipyard, which operates three facilities along the northern Washington state coast and a sales office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Westport employs more than 400 skilled employees and has completed more than 140 luxury yachts since 2000. Its yachts range from 85 feet to 164 feet and sell for prices in the 10s of millions of dollars. The company has been in business 50 years.

“Gary has always been passionate about our industry, and we are honored to count him as a customer, and now our majority owner, as well,” Daryl Wakefield, Westport’s president, said in a news release.

Wakefield will remain in that position, along with General Manager Dave Hagiwara and the rest of Westport’s management team and employees.

The price of the sale was not disclosed.

Edison Chouest, which builds and operates boats for the offshore oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico and worldwide, is Houma-Thibodaux’s largest employer, with about 11,000 employees worldwide, including thousands in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes. Chouest’s companies include American Custom Yachts in Stuart, Florida.

“Similar to the history of the Chouest family business, Westport began five decades ago focused on a commercial fishing fleet and has diversified into other core businesses but maintains an emphasis on customer satisfaction and the pursuit of excellence,” Chouest said in the news release.

“We are pleased to join the Westport family and look forward to pursuing the synergies that exist between the Chouest companies, ACY, and Westport,” he said. “We will continue to pursue the employment of skilled local workers and will remain an active participant in the communities Westport serves.”

New Ownership for Westport Shipyard

There’s an ownership change at Westport. Good luck to involve and keep on building those fine yachts. Here is their press release. –KH

Representatives of Westport Shipyard, Inc. (Westport, WA), the largest yacht builder in North America, announced today that the company’s assets have been acquired by Westport, LLC, an ownership group that includes members of the Louisiana-based Chouest family.

Westport112

Westport 112

Celebrating 50 years of business in 2014, Westport maintains three locations in Washington state, as well as a marina and sales office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Employing over 400 skilled employees, Westport has completed more than 120 yachts since 2000. And one of those customers was Gary Chouest.

“Gary has always been passionate about our industry, and we are honored to count him as a customer, and now our majority owner, as well,” said Daryl Wakefield, Westport’s president, who will remain in that position, along with General Manager Dave Hagiwara, and the rest of Westport’s management team and employees.

The Chouest family of companies includes substantial holdings in its primary business in the oil and gas marine transportation industry worldwide, but also includes the successful Stuart, FL-based American Custom Yachts (ACY). Since 1994, ACY has maintained a 63-acre facility accommodating the design and construction of world-famous custom sportsfishermen, as well as a host of other affiliated companies.

“Similar to the history of the Chouest family business, Westport began five decades ago with a fishing fleet, and has diversified into many other core businesses, focusing on customer satisfaction and the pursuit of excellence,” said Gary Chouest.

“We are pleased to join the Westport family, and look forward to pursuing the synergies that exist between the Chouest companies, ACY, and Westport. We will continue to pursue the employment of skilled local workers, and will remain an active participant in the communities Westport serves,” Chouest added.

Also similar to the Chouest business model, Westport maintains its own in-house vessel design and development team. Their composite-built yachts perform to a known standard, delivering exceptional speed, range and handling characteristics.

“The Westport family is excited about joining forces with the Chouest family, but we also must acknowledge the wonderful contributions of Mr. John Orin Edson, our majority shareholder since 1997,” Wakefield noted.
