Obsidian Deck

Obsidian Deck

Designed by team rider Kyle Martin to inspire confidence in wheel to wheel racing and deliver massive amounts of grip in the corners, the Obsidian has a bigger platform than the Small Blind for a smoother, more stable ride. It also features our new "Non-cave", a radical design solution that gives you a flat surface at your pressure points to stop you from over leveraging your trucks in hard turns. Get one under your feet today and see what you’ve been missing out on.

One Board One Tree

To give back to the environment we have decided that for every skateboard we sell, we plant a tree. One tree produces at least 60 boards. So with our program, one tree will turn into at least 60 new trees planted.

100% Canadian Maple

Canadian Maple is a strong and proven material used in the world’s best skateboards. We source only the finest veneers found in Eastern Canada.

The ultimate board construction material, carbon is lightweight but extremely strong, allowing your board to perform at its absolute maximum potential.

MULTI WHEELBASE

Precisely dial in your ride with multiple mounting options for your trucks.

Rocker provides a more comfortable foot platform by adjusting the deck angles to a skater’s natural stance. It also adds board control and increases responsiveness under your feet.

Flex Rating

Flex has a big impact on the overall feel of your board and is influenced by a bunch of different factors. The main ones being thickness of the deck, it's wheelbase and rider weight. To put the equation in laymans terms: more flex occurs when you decrease thickness of the deck, increase the wheelbase and increase rider weight. The more flex in your board the more carvy and agile it'll feel, less flex means it's more stable and suited for faster skating. We test every complete with a device we built in house, specifically to standardize flex ratings.

Unique yet super stable platform.

Unique yet very stable platform. More stiff than most boards I’ve ridden. The mellow concave creates very stable center and quick slide initiations with the unique feeling non-cave design for heel and toe on the outer edges of the deck. Great board.

Fantastic board!

Couldn't be more happy with my purchase! Feels and looks amazing. Once I get the bear smokies it'll be a perfect set up!!

“Verrry noicce”

Board is amazing, so glad it’s from the Milky Way galaxy where my home is. Carbon fiber is super sick, like COVID sick, nah mean? Anyways I can’t wait to get that 15% off.

Dopest Board Ever.....

This deck is soooo sick..

This is such a sick board.

I've been riding this board for a year now and I have to saw it has held up beautifully. The noncave is a love/ hate thing for a lot of people but man do I love it. It makes it so you don't over leverage the board and lets you relax the feet. Its counter intuitive the first time you get on, but yeah. I'm 6 ft tall and this thing is perfect. 5/5

So, here’s Landyachtz’ new lineup. See anything you like?

Dinghies. Many Dinghies.

Blunt Dinghy

Dinghy Blunt

The Blunt Dinghy comes with 105mm Polar Bear trucks and 60mm Chubby Hawgs, instead of the larger 63mm Fatty Hawgs. This is due to it being more narrow towards the front and rear of the deck. However, the overall length, width, and wheelbase match that of the standard Dinghy.

Coffin Dinghy

Dinghy Coffin

Turbo King Dinghy

Dinghy Turbo

The new Turbo King Dinghy combines the Turbo Dinghy and the Hollowtech Dinghy with Plow Kings. It’s the same length and width of a standard Dinghy, and in the same shape as well, just with some wheel arches. The wheelbase is still 14.6″. Those Plow Kings now sit under the board with only a 0.25″ riser. It also features 130mm trucks, instead of the standard 105mm trucks. Finally, it’s Canadian maple and fiberglass, for a stiff and long lasting deck. The end result is Landyachtz’ fastest Dinghy.

New Designs

There are, of course, a variety of new designs from a few artists. No one has ever stated that there weren’t enough Dinghy designs. There are graphics for all tastes. Be sure to check them out!

Obsidian top and bottom view

What are these exactly? Well you’ve likely heard me talking about how I like the leverage you can get over the rails of certain narrow decks, like the Dugout, or pintails. You can really dig your foot in to the rails to apply leverage. Now, a way of doing this while still giving you more standing platform is a ‘W’ concave. This puts a bump in the middle of the deck that you can use for that heel-toe leverage. But you’re always going to be resting your foot on the concave back there when it’s perpendicular to your travel. That’s going to get in the way of your leverage, because you’re not going to be able to take advantage of that bump in the middle of a ‘W’ concave as much.

Obsidian side and bottom views showing off the cutouts

That’s where gas pedals come in. These are carved out of the concave to create a flatter rail, allowing maximum leverage over the middle of the deck where your ‘W’ concave has its central “peak.” This really maximizes the ‘W’ concave’s potential. Up front, where your steering is done, you can use the gas pedals as a foot stop or reference point. It’s unique, and it’s interesting to see it making a comeback. The Obsidian was designed in conjunction with professional downhiller Kyle Martin.

I really want to get my feet on one of these. Pair it up with some narrow trucks and wide wheels and you’ve got something to really tear up the hills. Plus it looks absolutely stunning. The cutouts in the wood make the layers of Canadian maple really apparent, and the geometric cutouts for the wheel wells look like they were carved out of stone. It’s a really eye-catching geometric effect.

The Obsidian is 30.5″ long, with a 22.75″-23.25″ wheelbase. It’s 8.75″ wide, so it’ll really work well for narrow trucks. Still, that might be a bit too narrow for some riders, but because it has those gas pedal cutouts, you might not need such a wide deck, as you won’t be situating your foot within the concave.

Small Blind

Small Blind downhill deck

This deck also features 7 plies of Canadian maple along with carbon fiber for rigidity. The wheel cutouts are CNC’d, so they’ve also got a unique shape. On the Small Blind, that shape is radial, giving it a very rounded appearance.

The Small Blind might not be as flashy as the Obsidian, but it’s a tried and true downhill deck design. This shows that Landyachtz is finally catching up when it comes to serious downhill. The Evo might have been the “it” board of the early 2010’s, but today’s racers want something that gives them maximum leverage over a set of small trucks for grip and rapid turn in. While the Evo still has its place (it’s great for distance pushing with some downhill mixed in, races like the Broadway Bomb in NYC), the Small Blind and Obsidian better represent what downhill racing is today.

2020 Landyachtz ATV

The new ATV construction has been updated. It uses thinner layers of wood, epoxy, and fiberglass. This makes them stronger and stiffer, but also lighter, so you’ve got a lot of pop. All new ATV series are using this ATV-X construction, as well as the new Ditchlife and Perfecto boards.

Tweaked: Drop Cat

The new designs come from David Hale and feature a hawk flying through the woods against either a golden or red sun, depending on whether or not you go with the 33″ or 38″ model.

The Tony Danza

The Tony Danza, from Landyachtz

It also features rocker, so your trucks will be angled outward a little more. This can make quick pivots easier, but may be trickier for those looking for a flat or less turny platform. It also means you’ll have a little bit more leverage for flip tricks. It comes equipped with 155mm Gen 6 Grizzlies and Easy Hawgs, for lightness and a soft ride.

The Tony Danza is going to be great for all those tiny dancers. Wait, that’s something else. It’s narrow size and shorter length makes it more manageable for shorter riders, and definitely more comfortable for riders with smaller feet. It’s constructed of wood and fiberglass for lightness and durability, with a good amount of flex.

New Designs all Around!

Landyachtz Rallycat

Bear Grizzly Gen 6 Trucks

Gen 6 Bear Grizzly Truck

First, the bushing seat on the hangers is less restrictive. It’s more open to give you that looser turn in feel, but still deep enough to reduce slop. Speaking of reducing slop, Landyachtz is now using insert barrel bushings from Venom boardside. These prevent lateral movement of the hanger with a little extra bushing. Oh, and that boardside bushing? It goes into a washer now. No more strange edge of lean turning dynamics as the bushing creeps around the baseplate! Roadside you’ll find a new cone busing instead of the barrel, for a quicker turn-in and more flowy feel.

The new design is based off of their forged Kodiak trucks. It’s a good look. Simplistic and strong. I love the straig edges with subtle curves. It’s a good look, for however long you’ll be looking at them. Landyachtz even engraved serial numbers on them, which might help if your board is ever stolen. Later this year, Landyachtz plans to carve out the middle of the hanger and use titanium hangers, for weight savings.

This is the most exciting part about these new trucks though. For the first time, Bear’s releasing a reverse kingpin truck in 130mm. There will also be a 155mm model. These will be perfect for their new downhill decks. Throw some wide centerset or offset wheels on those, and you’ll be ready to bomb hills. More riders have leaned towards trucks in this size for downhill, as it gives a rider a ton of leverage for rapid turn ins and easy predrift initiation before a turn. They’re definitely more reactive, and therefore take a lot more skill to send down a hill, but that increased grip and turn response makes it worth it.

Landyachtz also has a number of great cruisers. I experimented once with putting RKP trucks on my Dugout, but they were just too wide. I needed something in the 140-150mm range to feel like they were offering me something. Now I have the option to get some 130mm trucks and wider wheels to have some silly freeriding fun on a small platform. Set it up with the 155mm and some Orangatang Skiffs and  you have a recipe for some really fun technical sliding. I’ve felt like Landyachtz’ lack of truck size options was holding some of their boards back. After all, the Ditchlife or Tugboat would be great for a RKP setup, but only with smaller trucks. Now you can get Grizzlies in a variety of sizes, which might make them popular again.

Budget Downhill? Baseplate Options Galore!

A common setup for downhill includes a reduced angle in the back and a larger angle up front. This helps the turn in on the front of the deck come in faster, with the back turning in only for harder turns. It’s like four wheel steering in cars. The back wheels don’t go as sharp, because the sudden change in direction can cause it to lose control against the momentum. But, when you steer up front, you can carry that momentum into speed through a turn.

The new Gen 6 Grizzlies have baseplate options from 50º down to 30º. With hangers between 130mm and 180mm, Bear’s got the market covered. Advanced freeride setup? Go with a 50/40 and 155mm trucks. Just getting started or riding a wide deck? Here’s some 180mm trucks with 50º baseplates. Want to go really fast on a budget? 30/40º split with 130mm trucks and wide wheels. And yes, you can mix and match the baseplates, because the lower angles have a higher pivot point, meaning the change of angle doesn’t change the height. If these hangers can offer the improvements Landyachtz says they’ve baked in, then we could be looking at a truck takeover. Move over, Paris and Arsenal, Landy’s getting serious.

Landyachtz 2020 Smokies

Landyachtz has a new downhill-focused setup. These trucks come as a pair, both with different hangers and baseplates. The front truck has positive rake, a 40º baseplate, and 120mm hanger width. The rear truck has no rake, a 20º baseplate, and the same 120mm width. These are very narrow trucks. Pairing them with wide wheels and you have a fast carving machine.

Kyle Martin in a tuck on the Obsidian longboard with Smokies trucks

The trucks are $399, so I don’t think anyone but the most hardcore downhillers will be using them. That’s expensive, even for precision. Still, the setup is an all-in-one, and many racers may choose it. With a quality downhill deck, some bearings, wide wheels, and hardware, you could be looking at a build that gets close to $1,000! Speed doesn’t always come cheap!

New Wheels!

Lil’ ez.

The Lil’ EZ is simple to describe. This is a 60mm version of the 63mm Easy Hawgs. It’ll come in the same 78A durometer, making a soft, smooth slide. It’ll be great for cruisers and ATV setups, as it’ll give riders a wheel that’s about the size of a standard skate wheel, but a lot softer and a little wider.

70mm Supremes

Hawgs 70mm

This wheel is inspired by downhill wheels. It’s 78A, soft, with a square lip, and stoneground surface. Out of the package, it’s ready to tackle a hill with a lot of grip

Core of the new Cheetah wheels

What Did I Get?

Beyond this, the deck that most caught my eye is the new SwitchBlade 40 Chief Night. It is gorgeous. I love night, I actually used to do astronomy as a hobby, and I just love being out at night, laying underneath the stars. That design by Laura Bifano really captures that feeling. I almost want to get it just to hang up on my wall. Oh, you buy paintings for your apartment? Well, is it really art if it’s not painted on a skateboard? Joking aside, if I don’t get the deck, I’m definitely grabbing a print of that.

Finally, the next item I will be buying is the new Gen 6 Grizzlies. Once they release the multiple baseplate angles (they just have the 180mm/50º setup currently), I’m grabbing a set. I’m thinking 165-180mm, 40/30 split for one of my older freeride setups that could use an upgrade.

The new designs are all tempting. But that stupid “money” thing says I can’t have much more right now. Soon!

What We Haven’t Seen… Yet

Landyachtz sent out a catalog to vendors. On it was a new category: surf. I have no further details on it currently, but it’s believed to be a surf skate, like those coming out from Penny using the Waterborne Surf Adapter, or Carver trucks. Landyachtz may have their own surf skate trucks, or they may partner with someone else for them. Landyachtz didn’t announce anything about them today, so we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for surprise announcements from them in the near future.

Description

Product details.

The Obsidian is a great deck for racing and free riding. It has unique cut out corners on top of the deck that could be seen as sort of 'gas pedals'. The cut out corners give you great stability and the ability to push deeper into your carves. The wheel wells allow you to place big wheels and will still prevent wheel bite. The board is made out of Canadian maple and has a stiff flex. This board has great leverage because of its well though out design by team rider Kyle Martin.

Landyachtz Surfskate Review (Bought & Tested)

Landyachtz Surfskate review

I never tried a surfskate before but since they are becoming more popular it was time to learn what all the fuss was about. I decided to buy and review the Landyachtz Surfskate and share my experience riding this board.

The Landyachtz Surfskate is a high-quality cruiser suitable for both carving and cruising. While Landyachtz named it a surfskate, it is actually more of a cruiser-surf hybrid board. It’s fast, forgiving, and beginner-friendly. Surfskates are not designed for tricks but for those who love cruising and carving.

Let’s have a close look at this board and see why it is or isn’t for you. This review is mainly about the Landyachtz Butter but I’ll also cover some of the aspects of the Pocket Knife and make a comparison. Let’s go!

Technical Specifications

  • Trucks (Bear Banger & Standard)

Spaceball Bearings

Fatty hawg wheels, landyachtz surfskate butter, landyachtz surfskate pocket knife, when to buy, when not to buy, landyachtz surfskate first impressions.

landyachtz surfskate butter walnut

The first thing I noticed it’s rather heavy but not too heavy, so it’s still easy to carry around. It’s a gorgeous board, I really love the glossy finish and the minimalistic graphic that is both used on the bottom of the deck and on top of the grip tape.

On the subject of grip tape, it’s quite thick and consists of a layer of foam with grip on top. Should feel very comfy on your feet and maybe it helps you to lock your feet a bit more when carving, just a guess.

The front features a high angle RKP truck with tall bushings that should help you turn better. The rear truck is a standard kingpin Polar Bear truck size 155 mm attached to a super high riser. Very interesting design and you will immediately notice the height of the trucks.

Glossy wheels grippy soft wheels comparable to the Landyachtz Dinghy and the deck has a low kicktail with a slight camber which is almost not visible.

  • Length: 31.2″
  • Width: 9″
  • Wheelbase: 15″ or 17.1″
  • Wheels: Soft Glossy Fatty Hawgs at 63 mm and 78A durometer (hardness)
  • 7-ply maple deck with a slight camber and kicktail, hardly any concave
  • Trucks: Bear Banger SurfSkate Truck and Standard Bear trucks at 155 mm
  • Bearings: Spaceball bearings with integrated spacers

The Pocket Knife specs are almost the same except for the wheelbase (13″ to 15″), width (9.1″), and length (29.6″).

I am not a surf skater so this video is not great at showing what it can do, I saved that for another video.

Overall this board feels like a cruiser with extra carvyness and it takes some time to get used to the jittery movement. I really like how it turns compared to my other cruisers and I definitely like riding this board but it took me some time to get used to it.

The foam grip tape is a strange sensation when you’re used to riding regular boards, I like it though but I’m not sure how durable this stuff is.

It can deal with rough surfaces easily as long as you take a more aggressive stance (lean backward!) and has no issues with gravel, rocks, cracks, or pesky twigs.

Hopping curbs is certainly possible but the kicktail takes some time to get used to, it’s just quite flat compared to my other cruisers. I wouldn’t try any tricks on this board.

It was designed for cruising and carving, not for kickflips, ollies, and shuvits. In my opinion, it’s just a waste of this board and I certainly don’t want to damage it on day one.

Get a regular skateboard with soft wheels instead if you want to get gnarly but still cruise around, this board is just too heavy for that kind of stuff.

I tried a few mellow slopes and did actually experience speed wobbles when you’re going fast, this is clearly visible in the video. It works when you ride in a straigt line, but minor corrections cause the rear truck to wobble.

This is not a downhill board after all, and I suspect his board will get even more twitchy once you push the speed to its limits. The trucks feel very loose depending on your weight so a heavier person might want to swap out the bushings.

Pumping is possible but it’s really hard to maintain speed, I don’t feel like this board was designed for that. Adjusting the wheelbase makes it a bit easier but even then it won’t pump like a long-distance board.

I managed to pull off a few slides but the area was a bit wet which makes it easier, nevertheless sliding is possible! I haven’t experienced wheelbite yet but I’ll try harder next time. Update: still no wheelbite!

Breaking Down The Parts

Let’s take a look at all the components, most of the parts consist of standard Landyachtz stuff so you can get an up-close view of what this board is made off. Not many surprises but the trucks are certainly the most interesting part of this setup.

Trucks ( Bear Banger & Standard)

Bear Banger truck reverse kingpin

Let’s start with the part that is supposed to make this board a surfskate, the RKP Bear Banger truck. One of the first things I noticed is the reverse kingpin on the front truck which allows for more aggressive turning. is.

The front truck angles at a total of 70 degrees (65° truck + 5° wedges riser pad), and comes with large cone-shaped bushings. When looking at similar setups you often see one inverted kingpin truck at the front and a standard at the rear.

Other surfskates often have springs or adapters for extra carvyness that might not last very long depending on the brand. The lack of spring or other adapters is compensated by this new design but who knows how they will hold up in the future, it’s too early to tell.

I’d say this is more of a cruiser/surfskate hybrid (a cruirfer?) but that doesn’t mean it won’t give you that surfy feeling. It does actually, but probably less so than the more expensive surfskates. I personally don’t mind at all.

Landyachtz surfskate rear truck

The rear truck is less interesting, just a standard Bear truck at 155mm. The huge riser is something you’ll notice immediately and provides a more aggressive angle.

Landyachtz surfskate deck

As I noted in my first impression, the top consists of a layer of soft foam with grip tape on top. Maybe it’s for riders who like to cruise barefooted (on grip tape?) or maybe it provides extra stability when carving. I’m still not sure but it’s rather unique and an interesting design choice.

After riding it I must admit that I’m not a fan. Unless you’re able to replace the foam griptape you should avoid riding after a rainy day. I had a hard time cleaning the grip tape and don’t think it’s very durable.

It feels a bit heavier compared to my other boards but it’s also bigger and wider so that would explain the extra weight. The glossy finish and graphic is beautiful and immediately gets you excited to ride the board. Note that there are a couple of versions available, and I picked the Butter Walnut version which is a bit longer.

The nose is pointy but flat and it has a kicktail which is slightly elevated but way less compared to other cruisers. Still enough to take a more aggressive stance when you encounter pebbles or cracks.

The board consists of 7-ply maple and it hardly has any concave, just a slight camber which makes it also a great surfskate for beginners. It’s a nonflexible board so people that are really into deep carving probably will enjoy this board less.

It’s wide enough for riders with larger feet and really feels stable when cruising around. After all, this what meant to be a stable cruiser and Landyachtz pulled it off.

The front comes with six mount holes so if you aren’t happy about the standard 15″ wheelbase you can move it and try the 17.1″ which will make pumping less difficult and increases stability.

Note that the wheelbase depends on the version you pick, more about that later.

This is the first board that doesn’t have flat screws, this might have something to do with the foamy grip tape. Flat screws probably start tearing, but it’s just a guess. Other than that there’s nothing remarkable to note.  Obviously the screws on the back truck are taller because of the bigger riser pad.

I still am not convinced by the Spaceball bearings. I usually replace these immediately after I tested the board. Right now I have a couple of people riding Spaceballs on regular skateboards to see how they hold up. In my opinion, Bronson Raws or Bones Swiss 6 bearings perform better but to be fair, they are way more expensive.

Overall the bearings are fine but if you want to get more out of your board upgrading the bearings is recommended. Don’t be fooled by the ABEC rating though, it really doesn’t make a difference.

Like all Spaceball bearings they come with built-in spacers, that’s a pretty neat feature and it keeps them in place. If you ever decide to replace the bearings, make sure to get some spacers.

Landyachtz surfskate Fatty Hawk Wheels

Fatty Hawgs are great wheels and I know what they’re capable of because I like to ride the Dinghy and Tugboat occasionally. There are better wheels out there but if you want the absolute best, you better pick your own parts and assemble it yourself.

The difference here is that the wheels are glossy and more grippy, unlike the stoneground Fatty Hawgs. I still need some time to see if there’s any improvement here.

Anyway, on topic. The Landyachtz Surfskate comes with 78A 63mm radial Fatty Hawgs wheels with a contact patch of 43mm (riding surface). You’ll be able to do (power) slides to some extent but this will take some practice.

What’s important here is that they are grippy and small objects won’t block the wheels. Fatties have no issues riding over smaller rocks, surfaces like gravel, or rough roads. They don’t make a lot of noise and you can even plow through a patch of grass if you happen to run into one, just make sure you lean back.

The standard Fatties perform less in wet conditions. When the street are still a bit wet from rain they tend to have less grip compared to other cruiser wheels. No biggie, you shouldn’t ride in these conditions anyway unless you really want to.

Your bearings typically don’t last very long when they get wet often. Again, I still need to test more to see if the glossy fatties perform better.

The wheels stick out a bit, especially at the back truck because of the wide trucks. Regular skateboarders like me aren’t used to wheels sticking out and sometimes I hit the wheels with my push foot. Nowadays less often, but it’s something to keep in mind when you aren’t used to this type of setup.

Landyachts Surfskate Butter VS Pocket Knife

I bet some of you are in doubt between choosing the Butter or the Pocket Knife so I thought I might do a short comparison. The main difference between the Landyachts Butter and Pocket knife are the dimensions, wheelbase, and snappyness.

Currently, Landyachts offers just these two variations but announced to introduce more surfskates in the near future. Depending on your preferences you can go for the Butter or the Pocket Knife.

The Landyachtz Butter is the one featured here. Ik picked this board mainly because of its design and its size, and the fact that it’s probably a bit easier to ride than the smaller version. It isn’t that much bigger though so once I get the Pocket Knife I’ll be able to explain the real difference, for now, I’m just guessing.

I’d say the Butter is better at plowing through cracks and rough surfaces but less snappy than the Pocket.  The Butter is a bit longer (31.2″ vs 29.6″) and offers more real estate at the front which makes it more stable and forgiving when you find yourself slightly off-balance.

This makes the Butter a better choice for beginners that want to carve and cruise, or taller riders and heavier riders that need some extra room and support. The Landyachtz Butter weighs slightly more compared to the Pocket Knife, exactly 3218 grams in science points, and 7.09 LBS in freedom units.

If you’re in doubt and new to riding boards, this is the one to pick.

The Pocket Knife is the shortest of the two and comes in two different designs. It has a shorter deck and wheelbase compared to the Butter. This makes it more nimble and snappy but less stable compared to the Butter.

It has a pointier nose though I think this has more to do with aesthetics than improving its performance. The total length of the Pocket Knife is 29.6″ and 9.1″ wide and has a standard wheelbase of 13″ but you can adjust this up to 15″ by moving the front truck .

Since the Pocket Knife is smaller, you’d expect it to weigh less and it does. At 6.5 LBS (about 2950 grams) it’s lighter than the Butter but the difference isn’t huge.

If you’re in doubt and have experience riding boards, this is the one to pick.

If you’re into cruising (or new) and want to get a cruiser that offers more aggressive carving compared to standard board the Landyachtz Surfskate is a great choice.

It feels surprisingly stable for a surfskate and the size of the board is beginner-friendly, you will have some trouble balancing at first because of the front RKP truck.

It will take some time to get used to and you need to break-in the bushings before you feel comfortable. Good thing is that there’s lots of room to place your feet and move around, even if they are a bit bigger than average.

If you’re not into technical trucks or transition skateboarding and just want a fun ride, this is board is a good choice. It’s not too big nor too small and easy to carry around when you have to take the bus or a short walk.

The Pocket Knife is available at Amazon, the bigger Butter version is also available on Amazon (affiliate link).

Since this is the first surfskate I tested I had to do some research to find out what others say about this board. Overall people are really content with its performance but if you are looking for a dedicated surfskate there are better boards available.

The negative comments come from people that are used to long-distance boards with a lot of flex. They have a hard time pumping this board and adjusting to its smaller size. Also, if you are looking to ride longer distances without too much effort perhaps this is not your board.

The Landyachtz Surfskate is a cruiser/surfskate hybrid if you want the ultimate surfing experience on land you better look at other brands like Hamboards or Waterborne (there are many more brands, just do your research).

The Landyachtz Surfskate is neither a cruiser nor a surfer but more of a hybrid that works really well out of the box.

It’s aesthetically pleasing and really gets you pumped to ride by just holding it, it’s a fun ride but I really had to get used to the jittery movements and carvyness at first.

The Butter surfskate is more beginner-friendly because of the extra deck real estate and the Pocket Knife is a bit shorter and snappier.

Want to cruise at speed while still able to make sharp deep carves? This board delivers. I do have a problem with the price tag, it’s almost 200 bucks and I think it’s hard to justify. There are better boards out there for just a bit more.

Keep in mind that I will do more testing and my initial conclusions might change a bit over time. After all, it takes time to really get to know a cruiser or surfskate so I will update this post. I’ll also lend it to a few people I know to further test its capabilities and share their findings.

After that, it’s time to replace some of the standard parts and see how to get the most out of this board. Make sure to read about all the other boards I tested, check out my list of best cruiser skateboards .

Okay By Me in America

Vladimir Ivanoff (Robin Williams), the Soviet musician who defects to America in Paul Mazursky's sentimentally satisfying new comedy, Moscow on the Hudson , walks around his new home in wonder, a man who hasn't yet learned what he should be afraid of. To be precise, Vlad doesn't defect to America, he defects to New York, that many-towered Babel where, as this movie has it, virtually no one speaks more than a few words of English. Understanding only fragments of what he sees and hears, Vlad isn't wary the way a native New Yorker would be, so he doesn't think it unusual that his best friend is a black from Alabama, a sort of internal émigré; his girlfriend an Italian; and his lawyer a Cuban who floated to Miami some years ago. In this democratic polyglot community, where foreigners confront ex-foreigners, and accents bounce off one another like bumper cars, even the Immigration Service is run by immigrants. ("Who's your boss?" demands an irate Hispanic gentleman who has been kept waiting. "His name is Ronald Ray -gone," says the lady official, in thickest Jamaican. "Now sit de f--k down!") Vlad fits right in.

In Moscow on the Hudson , all these people surprise us with their kindheartedness. They not only like Vlad, who is easy to like -- a solitary saxophone player in love with American jazz -- they also like one another. Moscow on the Hudson is Paul Mazursky's benevolent neo-melting-pot myth; it's about how Babel's towers reach to heaven. Though some of the movie may strike us as naïve or false, we're pulled along by the sweet dreams of a director with so broad and instinctive a sense of human solidarity.

Halfway through The World According to Garp , I began to think Robin Williams might need weights in his shoes to keep from floating in the air -- he was that insubstantial. But this time Williams is securely grounded; he has a real character to play, and he's extraordinarily touching. Bearded, and hairy as a Russian bear, he's a small, nearly innocuous figure in the Moscow scenes, clutching himself against the cold, grimacing at the sight of a three-hour waiting line for toilet paper. Like many citizens of Eastern Europe, Vlad has developed certain defensive strategies. When Jewish protestors are hauled off in black cars, he looks the other way; at the one-ring circus where he plays in the orchestra, he ritually bribes the K.G.B. agent assigned to keep an eye on the performers. His best friend, Anatoly (Elya Baskin), the circus's star clown, is a maudlin fellow with a woebegone rubber face and flapping arms, a noisy complainer whose indiscreet miseries could get them both in trouble. Vlad hates the Soviet Union, too, but he keeps quiet about it. Williams gives him a small, enigmatic smile -- almost a memory of a smile; he makes him a man in a deep freeze, passively accepting despair.

Using Soviet-émigré actors here and in Munich (which doubled for Moscow), Mazursky creates an intensely Russian atmosphere of silent paranoia and strangled exuberance. Vlad's family, with whom he lives in a standard, cramped Moscow high rise, are all professional entertainers, including Vlad's grandfather (Alexander Beniaminov), an enraged, disappointed old man whose half-cracked tirades against the state are always causing a scandal. Williams speaks Russian along with the others, and he's convincing enough, though the native Russians have a guttural sound he can't match. In a great moment, Vlad sings a forbidden Duke Ellington song he calls "Take A Train," and the whole family joins in with shouts and cries but completely off the beat. I don't know if Paul Mazursky could dramatize a scientist's or writer's hunger for intellectual liberty, but his understanding of an entertainer's need for freedom is instinctive -- the need is inseparable from the expressivity.

Mazursky's touch in these Russian scenes is astringent and rueful; the American stuff is much broader. The circus troupe, in New York on a tour, stops at Bloomingdale's, and the Russians become hysterical at the sight of the ground-floor glitz -- designer jeans, lingerie, and sunglasses -- a joke that turns a little sour, I think, on reflection. Anatoly chickens out, but Vlad, taking advantage of the pandemonium, swallows down his nausea and fear, and defects. It turns out he's abandoned a one-ring circus for a three-ring circus. Capitalism offers Vlad a riot of superfluity. In a hotel, he sniffs at the scented toilet paper like an ecstatic bloodhound; later, faced with innumerable brands of coffee to choose from in a supermarket, he faints from indecision.

Mazursky and his collaborator on the screenplay, Leon Capetanos, prepared for the movie by interviewing émigrés, and long sections of the screenplay have the feeling of strung-together anecdotes. Many of the jokey anecdotes are very good, but I wish the filmmakers had sent Vlad reeling through American society in the course of a story and had then folded their satirical observations into it. The way it is now, the movie feels randomly inclusive and jerry-rigged. Vlad is made to race from one job to another; the black security guard (Cleavant Derricks) who protected him from the K.G.B. when he defected at Bloomingdale's becomes his best friend, a friendship that's made the occasion for some liberalizing (pleasant to hear, but not really to the point) about the condition of blacks in America; he falls in love with Lucia (Maria Conchita Alonso), a Bloomingdale's salesgirl, and though Miss Alonso, a pop-singing star in Venezuela, is a lovely performer, her role is conceived as something of an object lesson. Along with dozens of weeping émigrés of every color and nationality, Lucia takes the oath of citizenship; the sequence raised a lump in my throat, but it also smacks of American self-congratulation.

In a word, Moscow on the Hudson should have been tougher. Scenes of affection and reconciliation come almost too easily to Mazursky, who is so eager to find the humanity in everyone that he sometimes flattens people out. (Evil and malice, after all, are human qualities too.) I find it hard to believe, for instance, that Vlad and his friends, each from a different immigrant group, would go dancing and hang out together. Isn't it more likely that each of the new arrivals would stick with his own tribe? Alas, the movie's family-of-man spirit feels like a crock. To achieve it, Mazursky willfully ignores some of the obvious divisions, such as the tribalization of commerce. It might have been funny, for instance, if Vlad had tried to open a produce stand or a coffee shop and had run into some indignant Koreans or Greeks. If Mazursky had confronted some of this, the movie's "I love America" sentiments would have earned our respect as well as our affection.

Yet Robin Williams's performance holds up. His Vlad comes alive in New York; the city's buzzing disorder makes him gregarious, hopeful, and ready to connect. And though Williams gives a performance of immense sweetness, he's not pulled down by the movie's sentimental tone. When Vlad gets the chance to play the sax with one of his favorite black jazz players, he doesn't make out too well. He's not good enough, and maybe he'll never be good enough. America the bountiful can't solve all his problems. What it can do is give him the opportunity to enjoy life. For a man who has always embraced misery, it's an immeasurable gift.

This is a new dancer that comes in at 39.9″ long, and 8.5″ wide. The wheelbase isn't quite right on Landyachtz' website, but it's redesign of the Stratus 40, so my guess is between 22.3″ and 24.5″, adjustable, maybe a little less, as it is slightly smaller, and features large kicktails.
