VANISH Yacht – Innovative $90 Million Superyacht

VANISH yacht is a luxurious superyacht with an elegant design built by Feadship in the Netherlands at their Kaag shipyard and delivered to her owner in 2021.

Both her exterior and interior designs were penned by British designer Harrison Eidsgaard and her naval architecture was designed by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architect.

VANISH is in the top 5% by LOA and one of 105 motor yachts in the 70-80m size range. She is currently sailing under the Cayman Islands flag, which is considered the 2nd most popular flag state for superyachts with a total of 1249 yachts registered under its flagship.

van5

VANISH yacht interior

The VANISH yacht is the perfect luxury yacht for up to 12 guests and 20 staff.

She cruises with six staterooms on board, including one master suite, a VIP cabin that can be divided into two suites, and four additional guest cabins.

She has a three-deck-high atrium, rising from the main deck to the sundeck and a beach club with a permanent view from the transom.

Her features also include a sauna, beauty salon, and underwater lights as well as an elevator for easier accessibility.

van2

Built by the Dutch shipyard Feadship, the VANISH yacht features a free-standing staircase flanked by a glass wall over three decks, a clever design of an extendable balcony in her owner’s stateroom, and a highly innovative transom shape.

According to the designer, the main theme of this boat is to feel at home and relax. She has a very sharp hull to create detail in an otherwise white boat, and her red boot stripe and the junction lines stretch out for 40-60 meters of her length.

The extra horizontal influence also makes the stainless steel railings stand out against their surroundings.

Specifications

The VANISH yacht has a 5200 nautical mile range, enough to take guests on their dream vacation.

She’s built with steel hulls, aluminum superstructure, a 12.5-meter beam, and teak decks – which means she’ll be able to withstand any weather condition!

Powered by twin diesel MTU (16V 4000 M63L)  2900hp engines each running at 1800rpm, she can reach up to 18 knots maximum but she comfortably cruises at a speed of 12 knots.

She also has at-anchor stabilizers that provide exceptional comfort levels for guests.

Her water tanks store around 41,000 Litres of fresh water and she’s been built to Lloyds Register classification society rules.

Compared to other yachts of the same length, she has a volume that’s 50.44 GT higher than average for her class.

Her price tag is $120 million and the annual running cost comes out to around $10-12 million per year.

Motor Yacht

After joining forces with Eidsgaard Design, Feadship launched the 66 metre Vanish in 2016 with cutting-edge customisation and ‘lifestyle par excellence’. Like all custom Feadship projects, Vanish was created in line with the owner’s exacting requirements, which has led to a superyacht with boundless luxury design elements.

Vanish’s modern, powerful exterior is softened by harmonious lines and the use of varnished teak. Her transom is somewhat unusual, as it was designed to create a closer link with the water when on board and act as a friendlier, less intimidating site when arriving via tender or swimming off the sea terrace.

Vanish is built to create opportunities for enjoyment inside, on the sun deck and in the water with helipads on both the sun deck and bow area to welcome guests in true style. This is a ‘springboard to a world of adventures for the owners and their guests’, and offers exciting interior spaces as well as exterior.

The full-height atrium features a free-standing staircase, a beautifully designed and remarkably different wall of glass, a balcony for the full-beam owner’s suite and a teak-covered platform slides out to welcome those on board to a private space above the water through sliding glass doors. In addition to the owner’s quarters, Vanish also accommodates guests in four suites and a VIP stateroom with a team of 17 crew on hand.

At least six people are presumed dead following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning, officials said.

The bridge fell into the Patapsco River after it was struck by a nearly 1,000-foot-long container ship, sending several people plunging into the frigid waters below.

During a news update Tuesday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard told reporters they are ending an active search and rescue operation for the six people left unaccounted for at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said that based on the length of time since the bridge collapsed and the water temperatures, they don't believe that search teams are going to find any of these individuals still alive.

Gilreath told reporters that the Coast Guard is not leaving, but is going to "transition to a different phase."

The recovery phase will begin at 6 a.m. local time Wednesday when divers will begin searching for remains of all missing victims , Gilreath said.

Col. Roland L. Butler, Jr., Secretary of Maryland State Police, told reporters the conditions have changed and made it dangerous for first responders and divers to be in the water.

He emphasized that police will still have surface ships out in the water overnight.

"We're hoping to put those divers in the water and begin a more detailed search to do our very best to recover those six missing people," Butler said.

The collision set off a rapid search-and-rescue operation. Eight people from a construction crew that was working to repair potholes on the bridge are thought to have fallen into the water, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld told reporters.

Authorities did not believe any drivers were submerged in their cars, Wiedefeld said.

The bridge collapsed instantly

The bridge, which is part of Interstate 695, collapsed around 1:30 a.m. when it was struck by a massive cargo vessel named the Dali. Dramatic video of the collision shows the hulking ship–the length of more than three football fields– slamming into one of the bridge's pillars, and then an expanse of the bridge falling into the water instantly.

The Dali, a Singapore-flagged ship, had left Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to Marine Traffic , a maritime data site.

Synergy Marine Group, the company that manages the ship, said in a statement that all 22 crew members are accounted for and that there were no injuries resulting from the crash. The company also said there was no pollution to the water.

In a briefing for the media, Moore said the crew of the container ship had notified authorities about a power outage onboard shortly before the collision. The crew notified authorities of "a power issue," Moore said, confirming earlier reports that they had lost power on the ship.

The ship was traveling at approximately 8 knots when it hit the bridge, Moore said. In the immediate aftermath of the collision, officials feared motorists might be submerged in the river, but Moore said that a mayday signal was issued with enough time for authorities to stop the flow of traffic coming over the bridge.

"I have to say I'm thankful for the folks who once the warning came up, and once notification came up that there was a mayday, who literally by being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives," Moore said.

FBI and state officials said the preliminary investigation points to an accident and that there was no credible evidence of any terrorist attack. Moore said the Francis Scott Key Bridge was fully up to code and there was no structural issue with the bridge.

"In fact, the bridge was actually fully up to code," Moore said.

The ship has had at least one previous accident

Vessel traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest on the East Coast, was suspended "until further notice," port officials announced, as search-and-rescue operations continued and the preliminary investigation into the crash was getting underway.

"This does not mean the Port of Baltimore is closed," port officials said in a statement. "Trucks are being processed within our marine terminals."

Gov. Moore declared a state of emergency and said his office was in close communication with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. The secretary was due to arrive in Baltimore to visit the crash site and receive updates on the investigation.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, left, speaks during a news conference as Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) looks on near the scene where a container ship collided with a support on the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it will investigate what happened, announcing on X (formerly Twitter) that it was launching a "go team" to Baltimore.

Prior to the crash, the ship had completed 27 inspections, according to a database by the maritime safety site Equasis. In one inspection at a port in Chile last year, the ship was determined to have a deficiency related to "propulsion and auxiliary machinery," according to Equasis.

In 2016, an inspection found "hull damage impairing sea worthiness" after the ship hit a dock on its way out of the port of Antwerp. Video of the incident shows the stern of the ship scraping against the quay as it attempted to exit the North Sea container terminal.

The bridge is an important travel route with a deep history

Members of the National Transportation Safety Board listen to NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy speak during a news conference near the scene where a container ship collided with a support on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, in Dundalk, Md., Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

The bridge's collapse leaves Baltimore and travelers along the East Coast without a vital transit corridor for the foreseeable future. The four-lane, 1.6-mile-long bridge carries some 11.3 million vehicles each year, according to state data, and is one of three ways to get through Baltimore on the interstate.

Reconstructing the bridge will be a "long-term build," Moore told reporters.

Speaking from the White House, President Biden said he intends for the federal government to "pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge."

"We're gonna get it up and running again as soon as possible," Biden said. "Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we're gonna do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers."

The bridge isn't just a vital transportation route. It also has a special historical significance.

It opened to the public in March 1977, but its history goes much deeper than that. Scholars believe it stood within 100 yards of the site where its namesake, Francis Scott Key, witnessed the failed British bombardment of Fort McHenry in September 1814.

Key, an American lawyer, watched the battle from the British warship he had boarded to negotiate the release of a detained American civilian. The awe he felt at seeing the flag rise the next morning inspired him to write "Defense of Fort McHenry," which was later renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner" and became the U.S. national anthem in 1931.

Shippers are scrambling to re-route their cargo

Roughly $80 billion worth of cargo passes through the Port of Baltimore each year. But with the port's shipping channels now closed indefinitely due to the accident, shippers have been left scrambling to find alternate routes to transport their goods to and from the East Coast.

Some vessels have already been diverted to Norfolk, Va., Margie Shapiro, who runs a freight handling business in Baltimore, told NPR . Other traffic could be re-routed through New York or Philadelphia.

The Dali was being chartered by Maersk and carrying cargo for Maersk customers, the shipping giant said in a statement . The company said it would be omitting Baltimore from its services "until it is deemed safe for passage through this area."

Cargo already at the Port of Baltimore will have to travel overland, but truck traffic will also be snarled by the loss of the bridge.

"The whole ecosystem is going to be a little bit off," Shapiro said. "When the ecosystem gets messy, things get messy. Freight rates go up. The world gets a little bit chaotic."

A major search and rescue operation has now transitioned to a recovery mission at the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after it was struck by a cargo ship and collapsed early Tuesday , sending vehicles and people plunging into the water below. The U.S. Coast Guard said the ship had reported losing propulsion and control as it was leaving Baltimore harbor, before the collision occurred at around 1:30 a.m. ET.

Two survivors were pulled from the water soon after the collapse, officials said — one unhurt and one with serious injuries, who was treated at a hospital and later released, CBS Baltimore reported .

Six were missing and presumed dead. Officials said the bodies of two victims were recovered Wednesday.

Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said all six were construction workers who were filling potholes on the bridge at the time.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency, with city, state and federal teams converging at the scene.

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping. CBS News Baltimore reports that the four-lane, 1.6-mile span was used by some 31,000 people a day.

The Maryland Transportation Authority  said  all lanes were closed in both directions on I-695, which crosses the Key Bridge. The agency said traffic was being detoured to I-95 and I-895.

The portion of the bridge that collapsed was on a stretch connecting Hawkins Point, on the south side of the waterway, and Dundalk, on the north.

Officials said in a news conference that the ship had reported losing power and a mayday had been issued before the collision, which allowed officials to stop traffic onto the bridge. Officials did not clarify how many vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

Moore said he "can confirm that the crew notified authorities of a power issue," and he said that the decision to stop traffic onto the bridge "saved lives last night."

Earlier Tuesday morning, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the collapse "an unthinkable tragedy."

"We have to first and foremost pray for all of those who are impacted, those families, pray for our first responders and thank them," he said. "We have to be thinking about the families and people impacted. We have to try to find them safe."

What was the ship's route?

The Singapore-flagged Dali, operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group, was chartered by and carrying cargo for Maersk. It had left the Port of Baltimore, just north and west of the bridge, before turning to head south and east along the Patapsco River.

The ship had been in the port for two days, according to ship tracking website  VesselFinder , and was expected to spend nearly a month at sea before it reached Colombo, Sri Lanka.

CBS News analyzed the path of every cargo ship taking this route over the past month and found Dali had veered more than 100 yards off the usual route when it struck the bridge support.

Before-and-after photos of the Francis Scott Key Bridge

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge opened to traffic on March 23, 1977, and was a crucial thoroughfare for the region, carrying some 11.3 million vehicles per year.

The photos below show how it looked following the collapse Tuesday morning, and how it looked intact just a few days earlier.

A witness who lives near the bridge  told CBS Baltimore  the collapse felt like an earthquake and sounded like "a big bash of thunder."

"The whole house vibrated, like my house was falling down," he said. "I've been in this neighborhood 57 years, I remembered when they built this bridge. Can't believe it's gone."

Another resident reflected on being on the bridge just yesterday. "To see the bridge gone knowing I was on that bridge not even 10 hours ago — it's devastating."

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Vessels Belonging to Owner of Baltimore Ship Had Been Cited for Labor Violations

The vessels had underpaid crews and kept workers onboard for months beyond their contracts, according to an Australian regulator.

Ships belonging to the company whose container vessel crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday have been cited in recent years for labor violations, which include underpaying ship crews and holding crew members onboard for months past their contracts, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

In 2021, the authority detained the Western Callao, another ship formerly owned by the company, the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., after it found that the management was in arrears paying 13 crew members and had kept them on the ship for more than 12 months, well beyond their nine-month contracts. In 2020, an inspection of the same ship in Australia found that eight sailors had been aboard it for more than 11 months.

Another ship owned by Grace Ocean, the Furness Southern Cross, had 10 seafarers aboard for more than 14 months. The infractions were “serious and shameful” violations of an international convention on maritime labor, Michael Drake, the executive director of operations for the authority, said at the time, in October 2021.

“This type of behavior is unethical and in complete contravention to the Maritime Labor Convention,” Mr. Drake said. “The international conventions that protect seafarers’ rights are very clear.”

Any factors about the crew of the Dali, the Grace-owned container ship that crashed into the Key Bridge, including fatigue, will likely be among the many items the National Transportation Safety Board examines as it looks for the cause or causes of the crash.

Grace Ocean owns 55 ships, according to Equasis , a public database of ship information. While global companies such as Maersk charter the vessels, the owners and the ship managers are generally responsible for managing the crew and maintaining the ships. The management company for the Dali, Synergy Marine, was not the company managing the two vessels cited by Australia.

The extremely opaque nature of global ship-owning makes finding the ultimate owners and holding them accountable for any violations difficult. According to Singapore company records, Grace Ocean is owned by the British Virgin Islands-based Grace Ocean Investment Limited. Lloyds List, which first reported Grace Ocean’s infractions in 2021, reported that Grace Ocean Investment is based in Hong Kong. But the company matching the name and address in Lloyd’s database dissolved in 2015, according to Hong Kong company records.

The Singapore company has four directors — two Filipino citizens, a Singaporean and a Japanese person — with all listing addresses in Singapore, records show.

Alexandra Wrage, the president and founder of Trace, a group focused on anti-bribery, compliance and good governance, said that ship ownership structures were designed to maximize opacity and minimize accountability.

“There are some good actors in this space, but shipping is the Wild West from a compliance and accountability perspective,” Ms. Wrage said. “And when compliance and accountability aren’t priorities, issues like environmental standards, labor practices and health and safety often aren’t either.”

The Dali had 22 crew members from India onboard, according to a statement from Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine. None were injured.

An inspection of the Dali last year at a port in Chile found that the vessel had a deficiency related to “propulsion and auxiliary machinery.” The inspection, conducted on June 27 at the port of San Antonio, specified that the problem concerned gauges and thermometers.

The Dali has had 27 inspections since 2015, according to Equasis. The only other deficiency, a damaged hull “impairing seaworthiness,” was found in 2016, at the port of Antwerp, in Belgium. The vessel hit a berth at the port that year. A spokesman representing Grace Ocean and Synergy did not immediately have a comment on the labor violations or on the deficiency reported last year.

The last hours of Baltimore’s Key Bridge: Dark. Quiet. Then chaos and tragedy.

The trouble began at 1:24 a.m. Tuesday as a cargo ship almost the size of the Eiffel Tower steered southeast on the Patapsco River out of Baltimore. Just ahead, spanning more than a mile across the darkened water, stood the Francis Scott Key Bridge, 185 feet high, with a crew of overnight construction workers on the road deck, patching cracks and filling potholes.

Hundreds of times a year, gargantuan vessels like this one, laden with containers of freight, had eased beneath the Key, bound for open ocean and ports around the globe. But as the Dali reached eight knots and drew closer to the bridge, what should have been a routine passage suddenly wasn’t.

First, the giant ship’s lights blinked out. About a minute later, electricity returned, then the lights went off again.

The ensuing catastrophe will long reverberate — in coming months of economic disruption , vast rebuilding costs and incessant commuting headaches — but most profoundly in the lasting anguish of families , in their grief for lost loved ones.

Unable to maneuver with its power gone, the Dali plowed forward, borne by its momentum, and slammed into one of the bridge’s support piers, collapsing the towering metal structure into the river. Down with it into the frigid Patapsco went eight workers . Many of the workers were immigrants from Latin America, six of whom are confirmed or presumed to be dead.

If not for two police officers on either end of the span who each halted 25 to 30 vehicles after a radioed distress call from the unnavigable ship, probably more would have perished.

What brought these people all to one place in Baltimore Harbor — the Dali’s crew, the bridge laborers and the officers now hailed as heroes — were weeks and days and hours of routine. They were out there after midnight doing their jobs: fixing pavement, safeguarding the public and conveying goods to the world by the thousands of tons; it was just another shift on the time clock before the lights on that freighter turned dark.

This account of the Key Bridge calamity, and of the preceding hours and lives of those caught up in it, is based on numerous interviews, statements by police and government officials, publicly available records, video tracking images and other sources.

The Dali, 984 feet long and 157 feet wide, had docked at the Port of Baltimore three days earlier.

Its 21 crew members , 20 from India and one from Sri Lanka, had traversed an enormous distance to get there. They departed Busan, South Korea, on Feb. 21, passed through the Panama Canal, then journeyed to New York and Norfolk before arriving in Baltimore. Next would be another month-long voyage, to Sri Lanka, with a new load of cargo. In the meantime, the shipmates waited in a city far from their homes.

Baltimore-area members of a Catholic group called the Apostleship of the Sea of the United States reached out to the crew to ask how they could help make the stay more comfortable. The organization’s mission, its website says, is to assist and minister to “mariners, fishermen, their families, and all who work or travel on the waterways of the world.”

The Dali mariners’ urgent request: Could someone take them shopping?

That was how Shawn Day, an Apostleship volunteer, found himself acting as a chauffeur Sunday afternoon for the Dali’s captain, the first officer, the first engineer and a ship’s electrician. They stopped at a Walmart and a Target, stocking up on personal supplies. Then it was on to a Best Buy, where several of the men bought laptops to give to their families.

As they drove, Day and the seafarers chatted about the differences between American and Indian foods. Day, who lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, told the captain about a goose his neighbor had killed and served to him for dinner. When they arrived back at the Dali, the seamen invited him aboard for a meal of vegetables and rice. But Day, exhausted by then, gazed up at the steep ladder leading to the ship’s deck and said he’d take a rain check.

On Monday, hours before the Dali was scheduled to shove off in the night, the captain texted the Apostleship, asking for another shopping trip, saying he needed a few more things. Andrew Middleton, the group’s local director, drove the skipper and a crew member back to Walmart, and along the way he listened as the captain described the Dali’s next crossing.

He had been plying the oceans for 30 years, this captain, and had a 15-year-old daughter waiting for him at home. The voyage from Baltimore to the Sri Lankan port city of Colombo would last 27 days, more time-consuming than usual, he told Middleton. Instead of crossing the Mediterranean and transiting the Suez Canal to the Red Sea, where Yemen’s Houthi rebels had been attacking ships, the Dali would be forced to follow a longer route, around the southern tip of Africa.

“They were going out of their way to ensure their own safety,” said Middleton, who later prayed that the crew would arrive in good health.

He knew the hardships facing such crews. Modern-day pirates. Loneliness and strenuous labor. Days of boredom and moments of danger.

“Have a safe voyage,” Middleton said to the men as they parted company, and he implored the Almighty, “God bless these gentlemen.”

On the bridge

About 150 longshoremen were at work on the dock beside the Dali shortly before the ship’s departure, using heavy machinery to hoist the last freight containers aboard around midnight as the crew prepared to get underway, according to union officials.

When they were finished, many of the stevedores drove home along Interstate 695, crossing the Patapsco River on the Key Bridge and skirting past another crew of workingmen — this one laboring on the road with shovels in the glare of floodlights.

Below them, tugboats nudged and pulled the Dali until it cleared the dock and was out on the river. Then the ship was on its own. Local harbor pilots said the rest should have been relatively easy: It’s a straight course along the Patapsco to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic, with ample room for passage under a gently arching bridge that had spanned the waterway for 47 years.

At 1:24 a.m., the Dali’s voyage data recorder, a ship’s equivalent of a jetliner’s black box, stopped logging sensor data, possibly because of the power failure, federal investigators said. They said that the recorder’s audio component, using a redundant source of electricity, kept operating, and that it captured a cacophony of alarms blaring on the vessel’s command bridge.

Such power outages are called “full blackouts.” Sea captains who have experienced them recall being enveloped in eerie silence as the ship’s illuminated instruments and screens abruptly go dark and its humming ventilation system shuts down. In video recordings made from a distance, the Dali seems to vanish on the river, becoming one with the night.

Investigators are now exploring what happened, examining everything from possible “dirty fuel” that might have caused the power outage to questions about the bridge design and its ability to withstand such a blow.

Chartered by a Danish shipping giant, flagged in Singapore and operated by a Singaporean company, the Dali can carry nearly 10,000 containers — though it had only about 4,700 at the time — and more than 100,000 metric tons. Now all of it, the mammoth freighter and its staggering weight of cargo, was adrift and unstoppable as it bore down on the bridge, headed for one of the immense concrete support piers rising from the water and holding up the span.

And a call went out from the ship: Mayday.

High above on the bridge span, the laborers were hours into their shift.

On a typical night, they would meet around 9 p.m., at a fenced-in equipment lot owned by their employer, Brawner Builders, about five miles north of the harbor, where the company keeps its heavy vehicles, its cranes and dump trucks. After loading gear for the evening’s work, they’d get on the road in Brawner’s red pickup trucks, bound for the job site.

They were immigrants — men from Guatemala and El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico, trying to make their way in America, land of the paycheck.

“The kind of work he did is what people born in the U.S. won’t do,” said Hector Guardado, a nephew of one of the half-dozen laborers who would not survive the night.

Up on the bridge, rule No. 1 was safety, according to Brawner Builders. Clad in red hard hats and yellow vests, the men would close a traffic lane with orange cones and work behind the protection of an “attenuator truck,” a sturdy vehicle rigged with a shield to absorb the impact of an oncoming car, always a looming threat.

Motorists would whiz past, and sometimes the bridge, by design, would ever so slightly sway.

Usually by 10:30 p.m. at the latest, other Brawner employees said, the crew would be hard at work on the pavement, trimming potholes with bulky power saws, until the edges were straight and sharply cornered. While the saws screeched, men would mix cement in five-gallon buckets to be poured into the neatly squared divots in the road. Then, in the waterfront wind and chill, would come the tedium of waiting for the concrete to set.

Some brought home-cooked food. Others would be dispatched to buy snacks at a gas station or a Dunkin’ doughnut shop just off the bridge.

They were husbands, parents and sons, many in their 20s and 30s: Miguel Luna, a Salvadoran father of three, an avid soccer fan, had worked for Brawner for more than 10 years; Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes was a Mexican immigrant; Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera was Guatemalan; Maynor Suazo Sandoval had come from Honduras. They were here partly for the sake of relatives they had left behind. The money they earned on the bridge would go a long way back home.

Now those four and two others are dead or unaccounted for.

Suazo Sandoval was Hector Guardado’s uncle. Even on the coldest nights, Suazo Sandoval would tell his nephew, the work helped to support not only his 5-year-old daughter and teenage son in Maryland but also loved ones in Honduras, a country he greatly missed. When there were baptisms or weddings in the family in Central America, Guardado said, Suazo Sandoval would dial in remotely, often crying as he listened.

He ordered cakes to be delivered for birthdays and medicines for the sick.

“Everyone else always came first,” said Guardado.

On the ship

On the ship, a desperate effort was underway to avoid a crash.

Foreign-flagged vessels such as the Dali are required to have local pilots on the command bridge as they enter and leave U.S. ports. In Tuesday’s pre-dawn darkness, two Maryland pilots were aboard the Dali as it gathered speed on the river.

The main pilot had more than a decade of experience and intimate knowledge of Baltimore’s ship channels, according to Clay Diamond, executive director of the American Pilots’ Association, who has been briefed on their actions. He said the other pilot was an apprentice who began training last month.

The pilots and crew faced compounding crises, Diamond said. The Dali had lost both engine and electrical power, crippling its controls and communications system. A backup diesel generator restored electricity, Diamond said, but not the ship’s engines. The pilot quickly reached a dispatcher at the pilots’ association, urgently warning that the Dali was out of control and that the Key Bridge needed to be cleared of people immediately.

“Have them shut down the bridge,” Diamond quoted the pilot as saying.

For the next two minutes, the pilot took the only available steps to slow the vessel and alter its course, federal investigators said. The pilot asked by radio for tugboats to help, ordered the Dali’s rudder turned hard and called for its anchor to be dropped. Meanwhile, the dispatcher alerted the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, and word of the emergency reached the officers on traffic-control duty at either end of the bridge.

The duty officer, 19-year veteran Cpl. Jeremy Herbert, was at a police station when the mayday call was relayed to him. He quickly contacted the two officers at the bridge, who were out in the cold for the overtime pay, slowing traffic to protect the construction crew.

“I need one of you guys on the south side,” Herbert suddenly ordered at 1:27 a.m. in a radio call that was recorded online. “One of you guys on the north side. Hold all traffic on the Key Bridge. There’s a ship approaching that just lost their steering. So until you get that under control, we got to stop all traffic.”

A “10-4” reply for Officer Garry Kirts came instantly: “I’m en route to the south side,” he said. “I’m holding traffic now. … I’ll have all outerly traffic stopped.” Kirts, who joined the force six years ago, and the other officer, Sgt. Paul Pastorek, a 13-year veteran, halted dozens of vehicles from driving onto the span, the president of their labor union said.

At 1:28 a.m., Herbert radioed the officers again: “Is there a crew working on the bridge right now?” The worry in his voice was mounting. “Just make sure no one is on the bridge right now. … There’s a crew up there, you might want to notify whoever the foreman is. See if we can get them off the bridge temporarily.”

Pastorek, on the opposite side of the bridge from Kirts, wanted to drive onto the span to alert the construction workers. But he radioed that before he could leave, he first needed a backup officer at his location to keep traffic stopped while he hurried onto the bridge.

At 1:29 a.m., waiting for the backup to arrive, he said on the radio: “Once you get here, I’ll go grab the workers on the Key Bridge.”

But it was too late. Only 10 seconds went by before Kirts was back on the radio, seeming to grope for words to describe what he had just witnessed.

He told the dispatcher to send help. “Start, start, whoever, everybody,” he said.

“The whole bridge just collapsed.”

Teo Armus, Sarah Cahlan, Erin Cox, Tim Craig, Scott Dance, Ian Duncan, Razzan Nakhlawi, Danny Nguyen, Imogen Piper, Jon Swaine and Rachel Weiner contributed to this report.

A cargo ship rammed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge , causing the span to collapse and presumably killing six construction workers. On Wednesday, a day after the early-morning crash, officials with the National Transportation Safety Board boarded the ship and planned to recover information from its electronics and paperwork while divers searched for the bodies of workers who were still missing.

Here’s what we know so far about the collapse:

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED?

The operators of the Dali cargo ship issued a mayday call moments before the crash early Tuesday saying the vessel had lost power. But the 985-foot-long (300-meter-long) ship still struck one of the 1.6-mile (2.6-kilometer) bridge’s supports at 8 knots, which is roughly 9 mph (15 kph). That caused the span to break and fall into the water within seconds.

Eight construction workers were filling potholes on the bridge when the crash happened. Two were rescued soon after the collapse. Divers recovered the bodies of two others and the other four are presumed dead. Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said they were working in the middle of the span when it collapsed.

In this photo provided by the U.S. Coast Guard, demolition crews begin cutting the top portion of the north side of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge into smaller sections for safe removal by crane in the Patapsco River, in Baltimore, Saturday, March 30, 2024. Salvage teams used an exothermic cutting torch to systematically separate sections of the steel bridge, which will be taken to a disposal site. The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday that the ship underwent “routine engine maintenance” in the port before it lost power.

An inspection of the Dali last June at a port in Chile identified a problem with the ship’s “propulsion and auxiliary machinery,” according to Equasis, a shipping information system. The deficiency involved gauges and thermometers, but the website’s online records didn’t elaborate.

A “standard examination” conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York in September didn’t identify any deficiencies, according to the Equasis data.

Given the vessel’s massive weight, it struck the bridge support with significant force, said Roberto Leon, a Virginia Tech engineering professor. The post can resist the impact by bending, Leon said, but cannot absorb the energy brought by such a “humongous ship.”

Last June, federal inspectors rated the 47-year-old bridge in fair condition. But the structure did not appear to have pier protection to withstand the crash, experts said.

“If a bridge pier without adequate protection is hit by a ship of this size, there is very little that the bridge could do,” Leon said.

Federal and state investigators have said the crash appears to have been an accident.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE MISSING?

Two of the construction workers who were on the bridge were rescued. The bodies of four of the six others were still missing Thursday. Searchers recovered the bodies of 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera on Wednesday. They were in a pickup truck submerged in about 25 feet (7.6 meters) of water.

The workers came to the Maryland area from Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, according to diplomats from those countries.

One worker, 38-year-old Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, came to the U.S. from Honduras nearly two decades ago. His brother described him as an entrepreneurial and hard-working husband and father of two. And El Salvador’s foreign minister, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, posted Wednesday on X that one Salvadoran citizen, Miguel Luna, was among the missing workers.

The ship is owned by Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd., which said all crew members, including the two pilots, were accounted for and there were no reports of injuries.

The ship’s warning enabled authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span. Plus, the accident occurred at 1:30 a.m., long before the busy morning rush. The bridge carried an estimated 30,800 vehicles per day on average in 2019.

WHAT IMPACT COULD THIS HAVE?

The collapse will almost surely create a logistical nightmare, shutting down ship traffic at the Port of Baltimore and snarling cargo and commuter traffic.

The port is a major East Coast hub for shipping. The bridge spans the Patapsco River, which massive cargo ships use to reach the Chesapeake Bay and then the Atlantic Ocean.

The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic.

President Joe Biden said he expects the federal government to pick up the entire rebuilding cost. His administration approved $60 million in emergency federal aid to pay for debris removal and other initial costs.

“This work is not going to take hours. This work is not going to take days. This work is not going to take weeks. We have a very long road ahead of us,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said Thursday.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a commercial salvage company have been surveying the site as they plan the salvage operation, according to U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Cynthia Oldham.

Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said Friday that the first goals are to reopen the shipping channel and remove the ship. The Maryland Department of Transportation and U.S. Coast Guard surveyed the damage Friday morning. Teams worked through high winds while determining how to safely cut the trusses — which weigh between 3,000 to 4,000 tons — into lighter sections that can be removed by four heavy lift cranes supplied by the U.S. Navy, according to Moore.

In the coming weeks, the governor hopes to have 10 tugboats, seven floating cranes, nine barges, eight salvage vessels and five Coast Guard boats in the water.

The collapse is not likely to have a big effect on worldwide trade because Baltimore is not a major port for container vessels, and proves more important when it comes to goods such as farm equipment and autos, said Judah Levine, head of research for global freight booking platform Freightos.

But jobs for roughly 2,400 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 333 could dry up until shipping traffic resumes, according to Scott Cowan, the union’s president. Cowan said union leaders are working with elected officials to fund compensation for longshoremen in the meantime.

Authorities must also now handle a sheen in the water after some of the 56 containers onboard that were carrying hazardous materials were breached. Among the hazardous materials were corrosives, flammables and lithium ion batteries, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. But the Key Bridge Joint Information Center said Thursday that there’s no immediate environmental threat and that air monitoring has shown no volatile organic compounds. Adam Ortiz, the EPA’s regional administrator in the Mid-Atlantic states, said Friday that ongoing monitoring has not given any indication that the water contains materials hazardous to humans.

HOW OFTEN DOES THIS HAPPEN?

From 1960 to 2015, there were 35 major bridge collapses worldwide due to ship or barge collisions, with a total of 342 people killed, according to a 2018 report from the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure.

Eighteen of those collapses happened in the United States.

Among them were a 2002 incident in which a barge struck the Interstate 40 bridge over the Arkansas River at Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, sending vehicles plunging into the water. Fourteen people died and 11 were injured.

And in 2001, a tugboat and barge struck the Queen Isabella Causeway in Port Isabel, Texas, causing a section of the bridge to tumble 80 feet (24 meters) into the bay below. Eight people were killed.

This story has been updated to correct that there were more than 56 containers on the ship, but that 56 contained hazardous materials, and to correct that crews were working to cut up trusses of the collapsed bridge, not the vessel that ran into it.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
