Average Boat Transport Costs in the UK (Per Mile)

When you plan for boat transportation, it's proper to plan your budget ahead. To successfully transport your boat in the UK, let me give you an overview of the average boat transport costs per mile for different sizes and types of boats in the UK.

In the UK, boat transport costs per mile range from £1.00 to £3.00. However, this can vary depending on the size and type of boat you need to transport. Boats under 20 feet have a transport cost of around £1.50–£2.00 per mile, while those over 40 feet have a cost range of up to £4.00 or more per mile.

The cost of transporting a small motorboat or sailboat can also be significantly lower than that of a larger yacht or boat. Let's find out what other factors can influence the cost of transporting a boat in the UK, so you can adjust your budget accordingly.

  • Long-distance boat transport costs £2.00-£3.00 per mile
  • Short-distance transport is priced around £1.00-£1.50 per mile.
  • Boats over 40 feet require specialized equipment, and so cost more.
  • Transporting a superyacht 500 miles costs around £20,000–£30,000.
  • Transporting a dinghy 500 miles costs around £500–£1,000.

Average Cost Of Boat Transport in the UK Per Mile

The boat transport cost per mile in the UK ranges from £1.00 to £3.00 per mile. The average cost per mile for standard boat transport is around £1.50 per mile, but this can vary depending on the size of the boat. For larger boats, the cost can be higher, while smaller boats may be cheaper to transport.

Below is a table showing the estimated per-mile costs of moving your boat from one location to another within the UK:

Additionally, the cost can be affected by the distance of the transportation, with longer distances generally costing more than shorter trips. The price for longer hauls can range from £2.00 to £3.00 per mile , depending on the distance and the size of the boat. For example, if you're transporting a boat from London to Scotland, you can expect to pay around £2.50 per mile.

If you're transporting your boat over a shorter distance, such as within the same county or neighboring counties, you can expect to pay less. The cost for shorter-distance transport can range from £1.00 to £1.50 per mile , depending on the size of the boat and the distance.

Average cost of boat transport based on boat size

Boat transport costs in the UK are usually calculated on a per-mile basis, with the average cost ranging from £1.00 to £3.00 per mile. The size of your boat, however, can affect the cost of transportation.

Larger boats require more specialized equipment, which can increase the overall cost of transportation. The table below provides an estimate of the average boat transport cost per mile based on boat size:

Note that these are just estimates, and the actual cost of transportation can vary based on several factors, including the weight of your boat, the pickup and drop-off locations, and any additional services you may require.

To get a more accurate estimate of the cost of transporting your boat, you can contact a boat transport company in the UK and provide them with the necessary information about your boat and transportation needs.

Average cost of boat transport based on boat type

Below are some of the most common types of boats and their transport costs in the UK:

The cost of transporting a yacht is around £2 - £4 per mile

The cost of transporting a yacht depends on its size, weight, and distance. On average, you can expect to pay between £2 and £4 per mile to transport a yacht. For example, if you need to transport a 40-foot yacht 100 miles, you can expect to pay between £800 and £1600.

The cost of transporting a sailboat is around £1.50 - £3 per mile

The cost of transporting a sailboat depends on its size and weight. On average, you can expect to pay between £1.50 and £3 per mile to transport a sailboat. For example, if you need to transport a 30-foot sailboat 50 miles, you can expect to pay between £75 and £150.

The cost of transporting a small boat is around £1 - £2 per mile

Small boats, like dinghies and canoes, are typically easier to transport than larger boats. The cost of transporting a small boat depends on its size and weight, but the average is between £1 and £2 per mile . So, if you need to transport a 12-foot dinghy 20 miles, you can expect to pay between £20 and £40.

The cost of transporting a superyacht is around £4 - £6 per mile

A superyacht requires specialized transportation. The cost of transporting a superyacht depends on its size, weight, and distance, but on average, it costs around £4 and £6 per mile to transport a superyacht . Therefore, transporting a 100-foot superyacht 500 miles will cost you between £20,000 and £30,000.

Factors Influencing Boat Transport Costs

The cost of transporting a boat varies greatly depending on several factors, including distance and destination, boat size and weight, and the type of transport.

The distance and destination can impact the cost of boat transport

The cost per mile will vary depending on the distance and location of your move.

  • Longer distances will generally cost more per mile than shorter distances.
  • Moving your boat to a remote location may be more expensive due to the limited availability of transporters and increased travel time.

The boat size and weight can affect the cost of boat transport

  • Larger boats will require larger trailers , which can increase the cost of transport.
  • Heavier boats may require additional equipment or permits for safe transport, which can also add to the cost.

yacht transport uk cost

The type of transport you choose may also affect the cost of boat transport

  • Open transport is generally less expensive than enclosed transport, but it may not be suitable for all boats.
  • Enclosed transport provides more protection for your boat during transport, but it can be more expensive.
  • During peak season, such as the summer months, demand for boat transport increases, which can drive up the cost.
  • During off-peak seasons, such as the winter months, you may be able to find lower rates due to decreased demand.

UK & Europe Transport Information

Boat moves within the uk.

Modern road transport is governed by so much ‘red-tape’, mainly for safety reasons. We always keep within the law and have a “clean” history. This can be tedious but we have to work around problems the same as any other business.

Membership of the Road Haulage Association means we are kept up to date with all legislation as it happens. We have a good working relationship with all the various forces, and service providers to ensure your transport day goes without a hitch

A good starting point is…How big is your boat?

  • Loads up to 2.9m wide are classed as a normal load.
  • Loads over 2.9m wide are classified as wide-loads.

If your boat is wider than this, then by law, we are required to notify the Police force in each county through which the route will pass. The Police require two clear working days notice together with the exact dimensions of the vehicle and load, the collection and delivery addresses, the date(s) of the move, and the route. The Police may delay the movement times in the interest of road safety or if it may hold up other road users. Providing accurate details to the Police not only ensures that there are no issues during transit but also that adequate Insurance cover is provided.

Sometimes we need to provide an escort vehicle for the load if the police require it, and boats over 3.5m wide require an assistant to travel with the load, either in the cab or in an escort vehicle. We have our own ‘Pilot’ or Escort Vehicle service for Wide loads that require escorting.

Height limits in the UK vary depending on the route taken. There is no legal limit, but the maximum overall ‘Safe’ height is 16’6″ (5M) . Most motorway bridges are at least this height. The maximum height will be measured once the boat is loaded onto the trailer. If any items that can be removed or lowered from the roof this will ensure that your traveling height is as low as possible, making routes easier to plan and keeping distance traveled lower. Depending on the type of boat, the maximum height available will vary.

Boat Moves within Europe (France and Spain)

Moving your boat by road to new cruising areas can be practical and cost effective if you like exploring faraway places but have limited time for protracted deliveries by sea. Our specialist low-loaders for transporting boats are highly sophisticated. The Mediterranean’s reputation and beauty of its scenery make it an attractive destination for international yacht transport. It’s calm waters, extended sailing season and the wealth of things to see and to do ashore make it an attractive proposition. In most parts of the Mediterranean, the sailing season extends from the end of March until November. It is possible to sail even in winter, but a careful eye has to be kept on the weather.

Rules for France

Normal – A ‘normal’ load is up to the standard width of a trailer (2.5mtrs wide and no more than 4mtrs high).

Convoi Exceptionnel – Anything over 2.5mtrs wide and/or more than 4mtrs high is classed as ‘Convoi Exceptionnel’.

Depending on the Category of the load being transported, one or more pilote cars may be required to accompany the vehicle in order to protect the load and warn other road users of an approaching Convoi.

A valid and up to date French pilote qualification is required by all escort drivers and the ability to speak and read French fluently. It is the Hauliers responsibility to arrange the pilote drivers to accompany the load from start to finish of the route.

Depending on the route, the permit may require additional escort assistance by the local police.

Whilst loads in Category 1 do not require a pilote vehicle, Category 2 vehicles require a pilote car if the load is over 3m wide and Category 3 vehicles require a pilote vehicle at the front and rear.

The loads are classified by size.

Cat 1 loads require a special permit and can only use certain roads. Some motorways can be used, but only within certain times and some junctions may be prohibited due to narrow toll booths. A maximum loaded height of 4.5m if autoroutes are used.

Cat 2 loads require escort vehicles to travel with them all the time and are subject to specific routes and times. The vehicle and load cannot travel on any autoroutes, and depending on the height the route can have hundreds of miles added, to bypass bridges that are too low, etc.

For both Cat 1 and Cat 2 loads in France, certain areas will not permit driving at night, whilst there are also a whole host of different ‘bans’, meaning we cannot transit towns and villages during certain hours. This can add considerable time and mileage to journeys.

Rules for Spain

The only routes we can use are specified on our permits, and we have a whole itinerary of permits that link up allowing us to make various journeys.

The standard width for a Cat 2 permit in Spain is 4.5m wide, still requiring the full use of a pilot vehicle.

General Notes

Generally in France and Spain, the bridge heights are lower. This requires the boat or yacht to sit as low as possible on the trailer, and any item that can be removed may need to be removed to allow a safe trip. (Flybridge screens, rails, etc)

When filling out the inquiry form it is important that we have as much information and as many dimensions as possible, so we can calculate the correct route, and to enable the paperwork to be filed in order that we can operate on the day without any problems.

Buying a new Boat or just wanting new cruising grounds?

There are many good reasons why when buying a new boat not to restrict the search to merely your local area. A wider search area will open up a larger variety of yachts, while fluctuations in foreign currency exchange rates may make prices in some other countries more favourable than those for vessels available locally.

Equally, you may want to move a boat you already own to a different area, either to explore new cruising areas, or sometimes we get requests as the result of a house or job relocation.

Boat transport can be a daunting process, but we can provide a hassle-free solution to moving your yacht by road. In some cases, the departure and end points of the route will point towards a particular solution. For example: a recent request to move a yacht from Spain back to the UK which in normal circumstances would involve a long voyage by sea, resulted in the owners (who felt this was beyond them due to their advancing years) taking the boat out in a port in Spain and then letting us cover the distance back to the UK by road (a weeks trip) on the back of our specialist trailer. A lot easier, and a lot quicker – allowing the owners quality time in Spain ashore at the end of their extended sailing holiday and the boat being back in the water on their return to the UK.

Often, yacht delivery by road can give an efficient alternative where time is limited or where there is not enough holiday time or crew to position the yacht to or from a particular cruising area.

Things to Consider

Cranes / Lifts

We normally leave the arrangement and payment of any cranes or Marina lifts to the owner. This arrangement service can be provided for a small fee, as getting both ends and all of the transport to tie up can sometimes be the most frustrating part of arranging transport! The whole package of lifting and transport will then be arranged and paid for by us, and payment for all services can be made to us, making easy work of arranging the day.

We have a specialist goods in transit policy that covers our service on an ‘all risks’ basis. This is the most comprehensive cover that can be applied. The standard value that we cover is £300,000. If your boat is over this value, a very small additional premium will be required to ensure full cover. It is still advisable to have full comprehensive insurance on your craft whilst in transit.

Boats traveling to Spain will require their policy document to be translated into Spanish. This will be provided by your insurer. The policy will be required to be shown to the ‘capitanerie’ or harbour master before the boat will be launched into the water.

For all boat moves, we will issue a Pro-forma invoice and require payment before the day. Payment should be made by a cheque or internet banking transfer (Funds must be cleared before the day). If arranged, we may accept cash when we arrive at the collection point. Invoices / Receipts will be sent to you if paid prior or on the receipt of cash on the day. We do not have card facilities at the moment.

You are more than welcome to be there on the day but it is not a necessity. We will ensure that your boat is signed for on our delivery note and any keys are collected and again signed for at the destination. We also check over the boat to ensure that it is safe to travel and that all fenders and warps are secured inside.

Note: Due to the fact that some marinas are located down small roads, many of these are lined with trees and bushes. We have had occasions where the hull (especially dark blue hulls) get marked by overhanging bush or tree branches. We would like to note that although this cannot be avoided in some cases, we make every effort to avoid such things. The branch markings do just rub off however and do not damage the hull in any way. We must, however, point out that we cannot accept liability for these marks.

Shrink wrapping will eliminate this if you are worried about it.

Step 2 - Boat Preparation

Before transport, we advise that you prepare to ensure a trouble-free trip. we advise that you carry out the following list below.

Preparation List
  • Disconnect/Isolate batteries.
  • Check and turn off all water and fuel tank valves.
  • Remove any flammable substances – paints, thinners etc…
  • Close and secure all windows and hatches.
  • Close drawers and cupboards.
  • Store and/or secure all loose items. (Internal/External)
  • Remove and store ropes, fenders, life-rings etc.
  • Remove canopies.
  • Lower or remove any antennas or radar arches.
  • Tilt up outdrive units for loading.
  • Mast rigging and cabling must be removed or securely attached to the mast. Any wind instruments/Nav lights must be removed. Bottle screws should all be removed and stored safely on board

If you require to book our services to carry out this list, please advise us at the time of booking, this will ensure we have the necessary equipment to do so. Failure to carry out this list may mean that boat transport is delayed. Masts and rigging must be fully prepared for transport. This is usually carried out when the mast is removed. We will ensure the mast is secure on the boat or if placed on the trailer, but any ancillary parts, spreaders, and rigging will need to be secured. Removal of Navigation lamps, wind indicators or VHF antennas is also recommended.

Documentation

For boats traveling to or from France/Spain, we will require the original documents for the vessel, which we will also photocopy (for customs purposes). These documents are; Registration papers or SSR certificate. For boats traveling to or from France/Spain, we will require the original documents for the vessel, which we will also photocopy (for customs purposes).

These documents are; Registration papers or SSR certificate. Insurance (also translated into Spanish if the boat is going to Spain, your insurance provider will source this for you). VAT status (i.e. bill of sale or original purchase receipt showing that vat has been paid on the purchase of the boat).

We will also fill out an ‘International consignment note, or CMR note upon collection, this is a legal requirement for all European journeys.

Our driver will check over the boat to ensure safety whilst being transported, and will visually inspect the hull, topsides and drive gear for condition, and produce a report before the boat is loaded, which is to be signed by the customer or customers representative. The same check will be carried out at the arrival point, where again, the report will be signed by the driver and the customer. This ensures maximum safety for both you, the customer and for us, in the unlikely event of any damage occurring. We are fully Insured and are members of the Road Haulage Association, ensuring quality and safety.

Step 3 - UK & European Boat Transportation

You can rest assured that the safe transportation of your boat will be our top priority.

We have designed and built our own trailer that combines state of the art equipment together with a design specific for boat hulls.

This trailer features the latest electronic braking system available and giving the best safety guarantee a new system called RSP – Roll Stability Programming. If the electronic unit senses that the trailer starts to roll, the brakes of the trailer are automatically activated to prevent a trailer rollover. The build of this trailer meets and exceeds all the latest build specifications, ensuring the very best conditions to transport boats.

3 Axles on air suspension and an increase in weight carrying capacity. Larger boat size capacity with extending rear bumper and lit wide load side markers.

Together with our Renault Premium tractor units, this will give the smoothest ride for all boats. The trucks are equipped with 420hp or 440hp engine, a 16-speed gearbox, electronically controlled air suspension, an electronic anti-lock braking system (linked to the trailer) and an extra exhaust braking system, all allowing very smooth control and braking.

We really value your feedback. This will enable us to keep our services tailored to your needs. We would appreciate comments for the website too, so if we carry out transport for you, we would like to hear from you. We can then post photos of your boat or yacht being transported and it will give other people information on the service that we provide. Send us a note by clicking here.

A guide to boat & yacht transport

Naomi

  • March 2, 2022

If you own a boat or yacht, you know that it’s a considerable investment. That’s why it’s essential to make sure that you transport your boat as safely and efficiently as possible. In this blog post, we will discuss boat and yacht transport in detail. We’ll provide information on how boats are transported across the land, both nationally and internationally. We’ll also talk about the process of boat transport for all vessels, from small fishing or sporting boats to large yachts. So if you’re looking for information on boat transport, you’ve come to the right place!

The process of boat transformation

The process of boat transport can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. By understanding the basics of boat transport, you can ensure that your boat is transported safely and efficiently. The first thing to understand is that there are two types of boat transport: land transportation and water transportation. Land transportation is used for boats that are too large to be transported by water or too small to efficiently travel long distances by water. This includes boats that are too big to fit in a boat slip or harbour and boats that are too heavy to be carried by a barge. Land transportation is also used for boats that need to be transported long distances across solid ground, where watercourses may be less reliable, such as from one country’s coast to another. Water transportation is used for boats that are small enough to fit in boat slips or harbours and may include a tugboat or barge. This category of boats includes sailboats and motorboats, as well as other types of vessels such as fishing boats and yachts. Water transportation is also used for boat transport across bodies of water, such as when a boat needs to be transported from one coast of the country to another. The process of boat transport usually starts with the boat being loaded onto a trailer. The trailer is then attached to a truck, and the boat is transported to its destination. When it arrives at its destination, the boat is unloaded from the trailer and placed in the water. There are two ways that boats can be unloaded from trailers: by crane or by the boat ramp. Boats that are too large to fit in boat slips or harbours typically need to be unloaded with a crane; boats that are small enough to fit in boat slips or harbours can usually be unloaded using boat ramps. There are many different types of boat transport companies, including local and national services. Local boat transport companies typically have smaller trucks and trailers, which means that they can only transport boats that are small enough to fit in boat slips or harbours. National boat transport companies like SG Haulage have larger trucks and trailers, which means that they can transport boats that are too large to fit in boat slips or harbours, as well as boats that are too small to make such long journeys efficiently by water.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boat & Yacht Transport

How common is it to transport boats by land.

Boat transport by land is more common than boat transport by water. Smaller boats can usually be transported by boat slips or harbours, while larger boats must be transported on trailers attached to trucks. Boat transportation by truck is the most popular boat transportation method in the UK and Europe, as it’s both safe and cost-effective for boat owners.

How much does boat transport cost?

The cost of boat transport varies depending on the size and type of boat, as well as the distance that it needs to be transported, and the company that you choose to work with. SG Haulage Ltd always provides the best possible rates for our customers, no matter what sort of haulage you need.

How long does it take to transport a boat?

The time it takes to transport a boat naturally depends on the distance that the boat needs to travel. Typically, boat transport will take only a few days, depending on the distance. However, this can vary depending on the type of boat transport company that you choose to work with – some are more efficient than others.

What are the benefits of boat transport?

Boat transport is the safest way to move a boat, as it keeps the boat away from potential hazards such as bad weather or rough seas. Boat transportation can also help boat owners save money on fuel costs and wear-and-tear damage to the engine and other fragile components, especially if they travel long distances (such as when transporting a boat across the country). Hiring a professional and experienced company for your boat transport is also a great way to protect your boat from damage, as it reduces the risk of the boat being dropped or mishandled during transportation.

Is it safe to transport a boat by land?

Yes, boat transport by land is very safe. The majority of boat accidents occur while boats are in transit, and these accidents are typically the result of bad weather or rough seas. When boats are transported by land, they are kept away from these potential hazards, which greatly reduces the risk of an accident occurring. Choosing a proven boat transport company is important to ensure that your boat arrives at its destination safely and without any damage. When choosing a boat transport company, it’s important to make sure that they’re experienced and reliable. It’s also important to choose a boat transport company that has robust insurance and healthy customer service practices in place, in case something goes wrong during the boat transportation process. A reputable boat transport company should be able to provide you with references from previous clients, as well as any type of documentation that proves their experience in boat transport. These are all things that SG Haulage Limited can provide. We have over 25 years of experience in hauling abnormal loads, including precious and delicate boats and yachts, so we’ve got the skills, expertise and protocols in place to move your watercraft safely, quickly, professionally, and without damaging your pocketbook. Transporting a boat: Costs, methods, and considerations

  • Transporting a boat: Costs, methods, and considerations

Boating enthusiasts often find themselves faced with the need to transport their vessels, whether it's relocating for a new adventure, getting repairs done, or buying a new boat altogether. Boat transport is a crucial aspect of boat ownership, and understanding the costs, methods, and considerations involved is essential for a smooth sailing experience. In this article, we'll explore the various aspects of transporting a boat, including the associated costs, transportation methods, and factors to keep in mind.

The cost of transporting a boat

Boat transport costs can vary widely based on several factors. Understanding these factors will help you estimate the expenses involved in moving your boat from one location to another.

1. Boat size and type

The size and type of your boat play a significant role in determining transport costs. Larger vessels generally require more extensive equipment and resources, leading to higher expenses.

2. Distance traveled

The distance your boat needs to be transported is a critical cost factor. Longer journeys involve more time, fuel, and labor, which can significantly impact the overall cost.

3. Transportation method

Several methods are used for boat transport, including road transport, shipping by sea, and even air freight. Each method comes with its associated costs, and your choice will depend on factors like distance and boat size.

4. Boat weight

The weight of your boat affects the cost, as heavier boats require specialized equipment and may incur additional fees.

5. Time sensitivity

Urgent transport needs or specific delivery timelines may lead to higher costs. Planning in advance can often help reduce expenses.

Methods of boat transport

Boat owners can choose from various methods to transport their vessels, depending on their specific requirements.

1. Road transport

Transporting a boat by road is a common method for shorter distances. It involves using a trailer and may require permits for oversized loads.

2. Sea shipping

For longer journeys or international transport, sea shipping is a reliable choice. Specialized yacht transport ships are equipped to carry boats safely across oceans.

3. Air freight

In some cases, particularly for smaller boats or urgent deliveries, air freight can be an option. However, it tends to be more expensive than other methods.

Yacht shipping versus yacht delivery under sail – which method really costs more and why?

Will Bruton

  • Will Bruton
  • June 11, 2017

Depending on the size of your yacht and the distance between ports, the difference in price between yacht delivery and yacht shipping may be smaller than you think.

yacht transport uk cost

A transocean passage can be a cruising delight, but it can also represent a logistical challenge. Owners who are constrained by time through work and family commitments, or who need to have their boat in a certain place at a set time, be it for a regatta or a charter, may not be able to sail their own yacht to its next destination.

Over the past ten years the business of moving yachts has seen significant developments. Several delivery companies now offer the services of qualified crew, 24-hour engineering support and satellite tracking as standard. In parallel, global yacht shipping has expanded vastly, resulting in faster deliveries and more destinations covered.

What is the difference in price between yacht delivery by sail and yacht shipping? We requested a quote to move a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44DS with a value of £250,000 from Antigua to Palma following the 2017 ARC. By ship: we were quoted £12,900 , including insurance and cradle rental. However, the shipment offered was later than the departure date we initially requested. By sail: quoted £8,500, not including fuel (estimated at £1,400), marina fees (est. £250), and return flights for three crew to UK (est. £1,800) giving a total of £11,950 .

Jeremy Wyatt, director of World Cruising Club, sees many yachts moved by both methods following events like the ARC.

“In general there are two types of cruisers, the ‘traditional’ liveaboards who will cruise the Caribbean then sail home to Europe or the US. More recently, though, we have seen more time-poor sailors, usually because they have not retired or are not able to spend extended periods sailing,” he comments.

“These are the owners who would be expected to ship back home. The convenience to them is not needing to spend six weeks preparing and sailing a boat back via the Azores and [that convenience] outweighs the cost of shipping.

“There is also the argument that shipping saves wear and tear, which is a hidden cost of sailing it back. Some boats, particularly catamarans, are also not really suited to the North Atlantic route back to Europe.”

ARC Europe: Crossing the Atlantic west to east is a very different experience

Trusted hands

Engaging a delivery company involves putting a valuable asset in the hands of a skipper and crew you have probably never met. So how do you decide if they are up to the job?

yacht transport uk cost

Simon Weeks is a freelance delivery skipper, based in Hamble, UK, who sails worldwide. “As a minimum, I would always ask for a skipper’s CV, verifiable references, and some contact well in advance of the trip,” he recommends.

Pete Green, owner of Halcyon Yacht Delivery, has developed clear criteria for both skippers and crew. “We run with a minimum of three crew on short and medium trips and four crew on transocean deliveries,” he comments.

“Our minimum skipper qualification is RYA Yachtmaster Ocean with lots of previous experience. In terms of crew, on medium to long trips we insist that one of the two crew must be a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and, on shorter trips, a Yachtmaster Coastal. The third crew member must have RYA Day Skipper or equivalent experience.

“Anyone going on a Halcyon delivery has to supply two referees who are followed up, plus either a face to face or telephone interview during which a short theory exam is undertaken to assess the extent of the crew’s knowledge.”

It is perhaps not surprising that, in a market where margins have been squeezed in recent years, not all yacht deliveries go to plan. “There are certainly some cowboys out there,” comments Weeks. “We pick up numerous deliveries every year from owners that have been let down.”

“There was one yacht we delivered from Spain to the UK that had been left by another skipper who decided he didn’t want to finish the trip. We were given a list of defects that the previous skipper had identified.”

“We were prepared for some maintenance before setting off but were surprised to discover that the yacht was absolutely fine. It turned out the list had been created so that the skipper could justify going home early.”

How yacht delivery companies operate has also been publicly called into question on several occasions. Many operations rely on unpaid volunteer crew keen to build their experience, a practice that not everyone in the industry supports.

There have also been reports of skippers pressured to sail into unsuitable conditions. In 2012, Farnborough-based Reliance Yacht Management was successfully sued for negligence after the deaths of a delivery skipper and two crew.

The wear and tear inflicted on a yacht on a delivery passage is a major consideration. With brand new yachts, the job becomes particularly involved, explains Green.

“It’s always a challenge to deliver a brand new yacht thousands of miles in perfect condition. We spend time bubble-wrapping every inch of the interior to protect it. Also, we don’t use certain items, including the oven, and we put foil on the top of the hob to make sure it is protected.”

“On the exterior, we check all fixtures and fittings before setting off to make sure blocks are secure, winches have been tightened to the deck sufficiently, and sails have been bent on correctly. Lifejackets and harnesses stay on deck to avoid scratching the interior.”

At the other end of the scale, some yachts being delivered haven’t been sailed in years. “It can be a tricky issue,” comments Green.

“Nearly all delivery companies and skippers specify minimum levels of equipment as part of the contract, but boat condition can be more problematic. Contact will be made with the owner beforehand to establish the yacht’s age and whether there has been a recent survey, but this only gives half the picture. My checklist includes all the seacocks, the rig, engine and much more.”

Shipping routes

Shipping yachts has become an increasingly popular option for many owners in recent years. It’s an appealing prospect, largely due to the inherent predictability of an operation that relies on big ships that can handle all but the worst weather with ease.

yacht transport uk cost

Credit: William Bruton

Shipping companies increasingly charter purpose-built vessels that speed up the operation further.

“It’s possible to ship with the mast left up, the shore power connected and crane the boat straight into the water at the other end,” explains Josh Flavell, a former delivery skipper who now works for Peters & May.

The list of destinations covered has also grown. “Whilst routes used to be dictated by the traditional yachting seasons and its major events, such as the ARC, today we are delivering to some of the world’s remote cruising grounds as well. Alaska and Tahiti are two of the more far-flung places we sailed last year,” reports Sander Shuurman from Sevenstar Yacht Transport.

The Oyster Yachts team in Palma manages many yacht handovers to and from shipping companies on behalf of owners. “It’s a very popular option,” explains Mark Durham, Oyster Palma’s operations manager.

“Although the shipping fees appear higher than the professional delivery companies, higher wear and tear heading east across the Atlantic means many are choosing what is a much more predictable option.

“There are some downsides. One is [to do with] the vagaries of loading dates. It can lead to multiple rescheduling, both of the loading and offloading team’s plans, and of course the planned program after arrival.

“Although the passage time will almost always be shorter than the own-hull sailing time, the additional costs incurred at each end due to delays can add substantially to the basic charges, so they should always be budgeted for as well.”

Whilst yachts won’t incur sail or motor maintenance issues, Hamish Burgess-Simpson, project manager from Oyster, warns that shipped yachts can arrive “truly filthy”, depending on their loaded position on deck.

“The dirt washes off the topsides with a bit of effort, but it can be permanently ingrained in the canvas work,” he adds. This dirt, generated largely by the ship’s stacks, can be mostly avoided by ensuring your yacht is placed forward of the exhaust system, but it’s still advisable to stow all canvas.

The price of moving a boat, whether by ship or delivery crew, can be hard to estimate. “In recent years the bottom line for owners has become increasingly price driven, so we try to provide quotes that include all of the major expenses, including cradle hire and insurance whilst the boat is in our hands,” says Josh Flavell from Peters & May.

“Our costs vary quite significantly. If we are utilising a scheduled ‘liner’ service, then the cost can be higher as the ship sails whether it is full or not.

“However, where we are using a chartered service ship, [which accounts for] about 70 per cent of our shipping, we can often offer a much lower price.”

Despite an ever-increasing choice of routes, some destinations will always require a delivery crew, or a combination of shipping and delivery. “We recently delivered a yacht to her owner’s private island in the Western Isles,” says Pete Green of Halcyon Yacht Delivery.

Hidden costs of yacht delivery and yacht shipping

Both shipping and sailing a yacht can potentially incur hidden costs:

  • Cradle hire: yachts being shipped are secured to the deck in cradles. Whilst you may own one, it may not be suitable for shipping. If it is, there will also be an additional cost of shipping the cradle itself or storing it ashore.
  • Insurance: many shipping companies include insurance from when the yacht goes into the ship’s crane to when it comes out, but not all – check with your insurer in advance.
  • Berthing: ships are delayed sometimes, particularly due to loading and unloading.
  • Satellite communications: one owner we spoke to reported a satellite phone bill in excess of £15,000 following a transatlantic delivery. The data connection had been left open by accident by the delivery skipper. If allowing use of your own satellite communication equipment, agree terms in advance in writing.
  • Wear and tear: on long passages, particularly heading into prevailing weather systems, some wear and tear on equipment should be expected. Consider timing of cosmetic work to the yacht carefully and ensure running gear works freely before handing over to a delivery company.
  • Insurance: again, check your policy. Your insurer may specify requirements for the delivery which may go beyond the skipper’s qualifications. Crew may also need to meet certain requirements.

Zero to zillions: How much does it cost to reach your airport?

Plane talk: many transport operators take the view that if you can afford a flight you’ll pay dearly to reach the terminal, article bookmarked.

Fancy free? Burlington bus 11 to the city’s airport has no fare

Get simon calder’s travel email, thanks for signing up to the simon calder’s travel email.

This column is coming to you from a sunny Tuesday afternoon in the impeccably pretty lakeside town of Burlington, Vermont. Despite the clear blue sky and sunshine dappling Lake Champlain right now, and the allure of churches and cafés in this good-natured New England city, people are leaving town.

Twenty-four hours ago the Great American Eclipse cast Burlington briefly into mid-afternoon darkness, much to everyone’s delight. But now the cosmic circus has moved on, with the next performance scheduled for northwest Europe in 2026.

At Burlington’s ambitiously named “international” airport, the small jets to the big cities are lining up: Philadelphia, Chicago O’Hare, New York La Guardia…

As is common with minor regional airports in the US , fares are painfully high. On Friday, for example, the cheapest fare for the 90-minute hop to New York is $349 (£275). But at least reaching the airport will not trouble your bank balance. Throughout the state of Vermont, no fares are currently charged on any public transport. Green Mountain Transit’s bus 11 will take you out to the airport for free.

New England has another example of benevolence towards the airline passenger: the handy Silver Line bus from Logan airport will whisk you into central Boston for nothing – and even provide a free transfer to the Red Line for the north or south of the Massachusetts capital.

In Europe, the six miles from Luxembourg airport into the city are covered eight times an hour by free buses, and thanks to the remarkable national policy of zero fares everywhere , you can of course transfer anywhere you wish in the Grand Duchy.

Other countries are not so kind to airline passengers: many transport operators take the view that if you can afford a flight you’ll pay dearly to reach the airport. In my new survey of the UK’s 10 worst-value rail trips , half the journeys priced at £1 per mile or higher are airport links:

  • Hayes & Harlington to Heathrow Central – £2.10 per mile
  • Stansted airport to Stansted Mountfitchet – £1.31 per mile
  • Three Bridges to Gatwick airport – £1.15 per mile
  • Stansted airport to Bishop’s Stortford – £1.11 per mile
  • Stansted airport to Elsenham – £1 per mile

You will spot that these are all short journeys (typically three or four miles), which tend to be proportionately more expensive. But the Heathrow , Gatwick and Stansted expresses linking London with those three big airports all have premium prices. Even the Elizabeth Line , part of the capital’s public transport system, costs disproportionately more to Heathrow. A trip from the central area to Slough is cheaper than a journey to the airport, even though it is four rail miles further.

To Luton, passengers might get a reasonable fare to Luton Airport Parkway station – but what awaits them is the demand for £4.90 for a three-minute, 1.2-mile journey on the Dart monorail link to the terminal. To be fair, East Midlands Railway rewards early bookers from London St Pancras with cheaper Luton Airport Express tickets that include the shuttle. But usually I stubbornly choose to walk up the hill, which takes around 20 minutes.

I am also occasionally to be seen striding purposefully from the tram stop at Ingliston Park & Ride to Edinburgh airport. All tram journeys elsewhere in the Scottish capital are £2 – but this suddenly rises to £7.50 for the last half-mile to the airport.

Financially stressed local authorities and transport operators can hardly be blamed for extracting whatever they can from airport passengers; typically half of them are from overseas, and perhaps seen as fair game.

But there is a downside: the higher the cost of public transport to airports, the more travellers will switch to cars and taxis. Certainly, drop-off charges for private vehicles comprise a deterrent. But airline passengers need a carrot as well – and here in sunny Burlington, they get one.

Yet the canniest travellers to New York City will actually be aboard the daily train, costing just $105 (£83) for a glorious all-day trip along the Hudson Valley.
