What Amenities are Included on Superyachts?

Owning a superyacht is a sign of wealth and prestige, and many of the worlds most prominent billionaires have their own vessels.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

yacht w owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

While sailing our Southern Wind in the Caribbean we had the opportunity to look over a Nauta Air 110 and Caroline, my wife, fell in love with that boat. Having decided to sell the large sailing boat we thought a new motor boat would be our cruising choice for the next few years, so the CdM Nauta Air 110 became the one. We signed the contract in February.

How have you modified the design for your purposes? We have had fairly detailed discussions with CdM over the past few months to finally agree a general arrangement for the boat. Caroline wanted two distinct lounge spaces, hence a focus on an upper saloon, and I wanted a comfortable lounge in the wheelhouse for guests. I guess the old adage of “happy wife, happy life” prevailed on the relatively minor changes we made to the basic boat.

Who will do the interior design? The exterior and interior design will be done by Mario Pedol and Massimo Gino at Nauta Design , who also did our last two sailing yachts. We have found them excellent to deal with.

Where will you keep the motor yacht? After a 30-month build programme we plan to spend a few months in Europe on board and then we’ll likely bring the boat to our home in Sydney. We are keen to get back to the South Pacific.

You’ve just taken delivery of a new race boat, too. What can you tell us about that?   I decided that the logistics of keeping a large cruising yacht that I was keen to race in Europe should be replaced with a more serious dedicated racing yacht, hence us commissioning Botin Partners to design Hooligan , a new TP52. The boat was built in New Zealand by SP Technologies with a plan to build the lightest, fastest and strongest TP52 ever built.

So far so good – we won our first regatta at Festival of Sails in Geelong in Australia but the real test will come with the upcoming TP52 Gold Cup Series in New South Wales. I love racing – right now I’m competing in a regatta in Port Lincoln in South Australia and Caroline is cage diving with great white sharks! Just because we’re building an explorer yacht, life is definitely not slowing down.

Length: 30m Year: 2017 Location: the Maldives

Where’s the best fishing you’ve experienced on this latest adventure?  The best fishing was between Bali and Komodo. We fished a rock formation in a heavy current and caught several dogtooth tuna, the largest about 45 kilograms, and a large giant trevally. Since we’ve got to the Maldives, we’ve caught quite a few wahoo with an average size of 10 kilograms. Nothing for the trophy cabinet just yet.

Did you do the passage to the Maldives?  My crew did that one and I flew in to meet the boat. The islands are amazing and even better than I imagined. We have been doing a lot of diving and have made several dives with giant manta rays. It’s very easy to cruise inside the atolls with good weather protection. There are many beautiful remote beaches with lots of coconut palm trees and great snorkelling. There’s no shortage of beautiful resorts, either.

Before the Maldives you were in Thailand and the Andaman Sea. What were the highlights from there?  We spent most of our time in Thailand in the Similan Islands, which are all protected, and you’re forbidden to land and go ashore on most of the islands. There’s no fishing within three nautical miles of them so we went a little further out but had no luck.

Interestingly, there were lots of Taiwanese fishing boats outside the protected area and perhaps that’s why our luck was out. The diving was good – mostly around granite pinnacles that held lots of huge schools of fish. We also visited an elephant sanctuary in Phuket, which was great. It was very interesting to learn about the elephants and their mahouts (caretakers).

Where are you heading after the Maldives?   I will come back at the end of February and go to the most southern part of the Maldives where it is most remote. We will stay around the islands until early May when the crew will depart for the Red Sea. That will be an interesting journey – we will pick up four armed security guards in Oman and they will stay on board as far as Egypt.

I will meet VivieRae in late May in Egypt and do some diving and fishing in the northern part. After that we will go through the Suez Canal and on to Greece, then Italy and Turkey, before heading to Bermuda in late October.

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

yacht w owner

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."

Jaguars owner Shad Khan holding steady: Here's his net worth according to Forbes

Khan's net worth is up $100 million from forbes' 2023 list of the world' billionaires, but remains the same as its 400 list of american billionaires last october.

yacht w owner

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan’s net worth stayed the same since last October, according to Forbes.

He’ll get by.

The financial magazine’s annual survey of the world’s billionaires lists Khan as the 162 nd richest person in the world with a net worth of $12.2 billion, a combination of revenue from owning the Jaguars, the Fulham soccer team in England, co-owning AEW Wrestling with his son Tony and the original source of his wealth, Flex-n-Gate, an auto parts supplier he purchased in 1980 and the developed the world’s first one-piece bumper.

Flex-n-Gate has added five plants and more than 1,000 employees worldwide, according to Forbes, for a total of 76 facilities and more than 27,000 workers.

Khan's publicist at FleishmanHilliard, Jim Woodcock, said via a text message to the Times-Union that Khan doesn't comment on his personal finances.

Did Jaguars owner Shad Khan get richer in one year?

Khan’s net worth is a bump of $100 million from Forbes’ survey in April, 2023, but remained the same as its October, 2023 Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. With an influx of new billionaires (141, according to Forbes, which includes singer Taylor Swift and former NBA star Magic Johnson), Khan’s rank dropped from the 144 th -richest person in 2023.

Khan’s net worth shot up more than 50 percent last year from 2022 ($7.6 billion). His net worth in 2014, two years after he purchased the Jaguars for $770 million from Wayne Weaver, was $4.1 billion.

Since Khan purchased the team, the Jaguars valuation has increased to $4 billion last year.

How does Shad Khan rank among the wealthiest NFL owners?

Khan is the fifth-richest NFL owner on the 2024 Forbes list, trailing Rob Walton (Denver Broncos, $77.4 billion), David Tepper (Carlina Panthers, $20.6 billion), Stan Kroenke (L.A. Rams, $16.2 billion) and Jerry Jones (Dallas Cowboys, 13.8 billion). Khan is the second-richest owner of an AFC team and leads the AFC South.

The wealthiest professional sports owner in America is Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer ($121 billion), who owns the L.A. Clippers in the NBA.

Shad Khan sold his yacht Kismet last fall

Khan’s bottom line also apparently got no bump for his bottom line by selling his 312-foot yacht Kismet to former Google executive Eric Schmidt for a reported $160 million, a discount of $60 million from Khan’s initial asking price.

Khan is in negotiations with the city of Jacksonville on a stadium deal and lease extension estimated to cost $1.4 billion. City officials hope to present a framework agreement for a deal in May and negotiations in part on how the city and the team would split the cost.

Who is the world's richest person?

According to Forbes, it's the Bernard Arnault family, which has 75 cosmetic and fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Sephora, Tiffany and Christian Dior. The family is worth $233 billion, easily topping Elon Musk ($195 billion).

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ($194 billion) is close behind in third and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ($177 billion) is fourth. Oracol co-founder Larry Ellison ($141 billion) is fifth.

World's richest tennis player Jessica Pegula will one day inherit incredible $75M yacht

W hen Jessica Pegula, the world's richest tennis player, decides to retire from professional tennis, she will have the luxury of traveling in style. Despite being ranked No. 5 globally and yet to secure a Grand Slam title, her net worth stands at an impressive £9.45 million.

This figure is set to skyrocket due to the inheritance she is expected to receive from her parents. Her father, Terry, a petroleum engineer, has amassed a staggering fortune of $6.83 billion.

In addition to his business empire, 73-year-old Terry owns the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL and, along with his wife Kim, the famous NFL team, the Buffalo Bills. He also possesses a $75 million super yacht, named Top Five II, which he plans to pass down to his five children.

His previous yacht, valued at around $17 million featured six cabins and could accommodate 12 people. However, it was replaced by a Dutch-built vessel from Hakvoort Shipyard, boasting luxurious features and eye-catching design, following the plans laid out by Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design, and Diana Yacht Design.

The yacht features an entire deck dedicated to the owner, equipped with a private al-fresco dining area, a state-of-the-art suite, a jacuzzi, and five spacious cabins. Comfort is also ensured for staff members, with private cabins provided for the captain, chief engineer, and first officer, along with a large dining area for the crew.

The upper deck is designed for warm weather enjoyment. Pegula , a four-time tour winner, can stay fit in a large swimming pool, and the area also includes barbecue facilities, sun pads, and a sauna.

This floor also houses two lounges, one indoor and one outdoor, and is crowned by a massive fire pit area for family and guests to relish late into the night. However, the yacht isn't solely for relaxation; it's also built for speed.

The Top Five II is powered by twin Caterpillar engines, enabling it to reach speeds over 15 knots (17 mph/28kph) with an autonomous range of 4,200 nautical miles (4,800 miles/7,770 km) at cruising speed. The vessel also boasts a premium dynamic positioning system, zero-speed stabilisers, a chart system, and a sonar.

Pegula, who has ventured into her own business projects and launched her own skincare line, Ready 24, in 2017, hasn't expressed any retirement plans yet. But considering the gift that awaits her and her siblings, it's understandable if she's already looking forward to her post-WTA Tour days.

Solaris Yachts continues to evolve and reinvent itself: we are excited to introduce our new Solaris 50’.

Following the success of the Solaris 48’ and 50’ over the years, we started designing new waterlines. This project led to the creation of a new Solaris 50’ with an LOA of 15,50m and beam of 4,78m.

The result of the innovative waterlines is the extension of the aft sections. This solution allows the use of the twin rudder blades. Also, we succeeded in designing a tender garage with longitudinal access, a unique solution on yachts of this size. This improvement simplifies the use of the dinghy, that is secured in its own watertight garage.

On deck, a broad cockpit, already tested on the Solaris 40’ and Solaris 60’, guarantees freedom of movement.

The wider cockpit of the new Solaris 50’ can accommodate one or two cockpit tables.

Among the exceptional advantages of this boat, it’s worth noting the full width steering wheels that improve visibility, even while using the sprayhood. Thanks to the steps forward the steering area, the water slips away from the side decks, creating a safe environment and allowing very comfortable navigation. The original steps also simplify movement on the deck.

Special attention has also been given to the interior details, in particular to the finishing of the saloon and the owners cabin: the collaboration with Poltrona FRAU, the prestigious leather manufacturers since 1912, enable you to customise the interior of your Solaris according on your needs and personal taste.

The all new Solaris 50 was on display at Cannes Yachting Festival and proves to be an incredibly stylish performance Med cruiser

yachting world solaris 50

We got the chance to see both the Solaris 40 and the Solaris 50 at Cannes – keep an eye on the Yachting Monthly Youtube channel for a tour of the 40 coming soon.

Stepping onboard the Solaris 40 does not feel like stepping onto a 40ft yacht, with such intense focus on keeping the decks uncluttered, a decent amount of beam and providing luxury and space below. Frankly it feels huge.

Stepping onboard the 50 is something else altogether. This new version of the Solaris 50 – the previous version was pretty universally loved by all who sailed her – continues the long relationship between Argentine designer Soto Acebel and Solaris Yachts.

It is hardly surprising, then, that the Solaris 50 features a lot of the same design traits as both the Solaris 40 and Solaris 60.

There’s no doubt that this is something of a med sailing specialist and sitting at the fold down helming seat the view towards the bow is open and uncluttered, perfect for a day out in moderate breeze without a significant seaway. Of course this is a 50 footer so ocean crossings are more than possible and there’s nothing here to stop that, but probably not the target market.

There’s a clever step up to the side decks that also features on the 40, which helps to keep plenty of space around the helm pedestals, allowing for a full width traveller, which is recessed below the deck to prevent a trip hazard or just a painful stubbed toe.

While attention to detail on the deck is impressive, it is down below that the Solaris 50 announces itself as a luxury cruiser. In particular the owner’s cabin is huge with a similarly impressive owner’s heads.

Arcona 50 review: Luxury performance cruiser

  • Toby Hodges
  • December 13, 2023

A watershed design for the traditional Swedish brand, but does Arcona’s flagship have the X-factor to stand out in a crowd? Toby Hodges tests the new Arcona 50 to find out

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

Arcona – a Swedish yard with a sound reputation for producing traditional style cruiser-racers, designed by a little known Swede who had a gift of ensuring slippery hulls. If that sounds familiar, then be prepared for a redefinition, as pretty much all of that has changed with the launch of this new flagship Arcona 50.

Gone is the sweet, simple, stick-to-what-works idea. This is a big, contemporary new Arcona, one that sees the brand transition from its cruiser-racer heritage and classic interiors to a luxury performance sector. And it’s a stunner – inside and out, the Arcona 50 is a true showstopper.

It’s a bold move, but an understandable one. Long term designer Stefan Qviberg passed away in 2018, the same year when Arcona was bought by Najad and Orust Quality Yachts. Their owner then brought in former Olympic sailor Urban Lagnéus as CEO, a veteran manager who spent 18 years at Hallberg-Rassy. This new flagship is the first brand new design in that five year period and sees Arcona move much closer to the market trend.

However, that decision brings seriously stiff competition. Over the last decade or so I have often written about how many similar options there are for those looking for a quality fast cruiser in the 50ft sector. Arguably, the launchpad for this trend was the Solaris 50 in 2015, for which the Italian yard brought out a replacement last year.

yachting world solaris 50

The new Arcona 50 marks a change from the Swedish manufacturer. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

Cantiere del Pardo has its equally sleek looking Grand Soleil 48P , then came the First 53 , which aimed to offer such performance rewards and style for less cost. Nautor Swan has since renewed its thoroughbred Swan 48 design, launched a new Swan 55 and announced a new Swan 51 for 2025. And then there’s X-Yachts, perhaps Arcona’s closest rival, with its X4.9 , for which it now has a MkII version.

All these models are, essentially, high end, aft cockpit, three-cabin performance cruisers.

Which brings us on to the elephant in the room. By moving to this market sector Arcona has pitched the Arcona 50 against these high profile fast cruiser brands, and one in particular. Some will say this Arcona 50 looks very similar to an X-Yacht – and deliberately so even, with the choice of its big name designer: X-Yachts co-founder and designer for 40 years, Niels Jeppesen.

Beneteau First 53 review: This French cruiser backs up its bold first impressions

There is big talk and bold talk, but often it is no talk that speaks loudest when it comes to…

So for the would-be buyer, has Arcona just made that selection all the more difficult? Unless it comes down to brand loyalty, it will be a decision based on the increasingly small margins of aesthetics, performance, layout and build quality. Or perhaps, in reality, cost could be the deciding factor – the Arcona 50 starts at nearly €200,000 more than the Solaris or X.

My mind was swimming with such stats as I caught the train to La Rochelle to sail the first hull Dancing Queen . But I was to discover that one thing that hasn’t changed about Arcona – the enjoyment of sailing one. I had two good trials on the boat in largely Force 3 and 4 winds, using a mix of jib, Code 0 and gennaker on various angles and in some swell, and can confirm this is a design that backs up its looks and price tag with performance.

How the Arcona 50 looks

To stand out in this crowded marketplace then, first impressions of the Arcona 50 are critical, an aspect Arcona has seemingly nailed. And it includes many other firsts for Arcona: its first 50-footer; its first model with twin rudders, a tender garage, L-shaped cockpit benches and twin tables. It’s also the first to use cored woodwork/ furniture. And it’s the first Arcona designed by Jeppesen.

It retains the galvanised steel frame to help ensure a stiff structure, and mahogany is the standard trim, but that’s where the similarities to previous Arconas trail off. The Arcona 50 has a much higher freeboard and a wider stern for more stability. The stemhead is also noticeably fuller, in line with modern trends. “It’s a win-win situation in my opinion to have these fuller ends,” thinks Jeppesen. “It gives better sailing qualities for the way our clients use their boats these days.”

So this is a big 50-footer, but one Arcona has set up to be push-button controlled and easy to sail short-handed. As soon as we had clear water, the sails were unfurled and trimmed from the pedestals and we were straight into some rewarding sailing.

yachting world solaris 50

Winches and traveller are within reach or controlled from the helms, while twin cockpit tables work well and keep clear central access. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

The test boat had a few optional extras to help make this process extra smooth. The first is the Mainfurl in-boom furling system, a GRP shell with a carbon mandrel, which is controlled remotely from the helm. The optional recessed traveller is another neat feature as it gives good control and trim options for the mainsail, yet it’s contained below deck to avoid it being a trip hazard. It’s led via a flatwinder winch which is again controlled from the pedestal. The ability to dump the traveller at a higher speed would be useful though, as it’s a powerful mainsail (Arcona prefer large mains with jibs to overlapping genoas), and line tails need to be kept clear of the well.

Twin aft winches are used each side to trim sheets. The forward one is a two-speed powered model, again remotely controlled. With the sheets and running rigging led here, there are a lot of lines in a large, wide cockpit, but good, deep bins are designed in below the coamings to help deal with this. You still need to be organised with this though, as you never know when a quick halyard drop might be needed.

Into the groove

Sailing upwind in 10-12 knots, the Arcona 50 clocked speeds in the late 7s and early 8 knots, and tacked through 80°. In the lighter breeze of my second sail, this equated to 7 knots in 9 at 28-30° to the apparent wind.

The Arcona 50 is fast to find its groove and boasts plenty of grip, albeit for a very neutral feel on the helm (which Arcona is working to address). You really can leave the wheel and it keeps tracking along. Even when fully powered up, you can just keep a finger on the wheel, so it will certainly be easy on power consumption when under autopilot. However, without any traditional weatherhelm sensations, you need to be careful not to overload a yacht which carries a generous amount of sail.

Once the Arcona 50 heels onto its soft aft chine it stops leaning further and the power translates to acceleration at a consistent angle. The curved reverse stem and optional bowsprit look sexy at the pointy end, but studying our camera footage leads me to wonder if the balance on the test boat is a little bow down, with the wide stem pushing water and creating a bow wave.

yachting world solaris 50

Broad aft sections and a garage that can house a RIB up to 2.8m. Photo: Transform Media/Arcona Yachts

However, it maintained high average speeds and once you fetch off or set an offwind sail, double figures are easily achievable. Under Code 0, for example, in 14 knots true wind, we averaged 10 knots, making up to 11 in 1.5m waves.

A glance at the beamy stern sections will tell you it’s a design that should suit reaching, and with the big blue gennaker set we were treated to some gorgeous sailing in 13-17 knots during an unusually warm autumnal afternoon. The Arcona 50 then maintained over 10 knots at 70-80° to the apparent and, with a swell off our quarter, we hit 11.7 knots.

The ability of the boat to harness light- to mid-strength winds also stood out. During our second sail, as we relaxed into some mile munching, with Abba booming out of the cockpit speakers and the foot of that big blue gennaker skirting the water, we almost matched the 10 knot true wind.

When I finally relinquished the wheel and ventured below decks, it was noticeably quiet at heel. The keel is attached directly to a galvanised steel frame, which is bolted to solid GRP stringers, a longstanding backbone technique to Arcona builds.

On this Arcona 50, the bulkheads are in Divinycell foam sandwich, with honeycomb or foam also used to core some joiner work (doors/floors/lockers), a weight saving measure employed more on race boats. Arcona argues that the weight saved is put into lead in the keel, which helps translate to high stability and pointing, and a taller rig for more performance. “The aim is always to have a faster boat than our opponents, and we think we are,” Lagnéus commented.

That said, the drawbacks a standard draught of 2.95m bring were patently evident as we headed back to port. Granted, the spring tides were particularly large that week, however the Arcona was the only yacht of the group we were testing for European Yacht of the Year trials not to be able to moor overnight in Port de Plaisance/Minimes, one of the world’s largest marinas with over 4,500 berths.

Instead it had to move into the town’s locked-in marina with the IMOCA 60s and other large craft. The 2.5m option will likely be the more popular choice, while a 2.2m shallow L-shape option is also offered.

An 80hp Yanmar saildrive is fitted as standard. The test boat had the 100hp upgrade, which is perhaps overkill for a performance cruiser such as this, but adds plenty of torque, which could be useful for motorsailing. It allowed us to record 7.5 knots at just 2,000rpm or hit 10.5 knots flat out. For those concerned with manoeuvrability, bow and stern thrusters are offered.

Arcona 50 styling

The deck design helps indicate the primary purpose for the Arcona 50. It’s very much on trend for this style of yacht, and will more suit warm weather sailing than offshore cruising.

Lagnéus stressed how important the tender garage is, for instance. When you go to the effort of design styling that they have, davits would spoil the lines, he thinks. This decision helps define the shape, the broad aft sections and twin rudders. He predicts that owners will want to use a large dinghy frequently on this size of yacht while at anchor in Med and Baltic waters, and therefore a garage makes most sense (housing a RIB up to 2.8m).

Reaching hull speed. The test boat has a painted aluminium John Mast. The stepped sprit helps create a lower aesthetic and increases the Code’s luff length. Photo: Transform Media/Arcona Yachts

Other deck features point towards warm weather coastal sailing and are in line with the competition. The coamings are shallow and the coachroof is flat for example, so there is very little cockpit protection unless you raise the sprayhood from its recessed well. There is also currently no option to close off the transom, while the gas locker and tankage is on the moderate size for a 50-footer.

Practical features include the deep sail locker and dedicated liferaft locker. The rudders are on separate quadrants and independent Jefa steering connections, so if you lose one you can still steer using the other. And the vacuum infused composite watertight bulkheads both forward and aft will aid peace of mind.

Light and light

In a similar vein to the exterior styling, the interior is very much on trend, especially in the light oak finish of the test boat. The bright, spacious and welcoming design features plenty of natural light thanks to the long coachroof and hull ports and tasteful down and indirect lighting.

And it’s been finished to a high standard, especially when you consider what you can’t see. The foam cored bulkheads, doors and lockers save 60kg (over typical plywood), says Lagnéus, while the plywood honeycomb structure used in the companionway steps save another 30kg.

Galley is thoughtfully laid out for ergonomic use and is well equipped. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

A second galley layout is offered, one which closes off the access from the companionway and links the galley to saloon. Other than that, layout choices are minimal – a larger wardrobe in the forward cabin and double or twin berth options for the aft cabins.

Arcona offers the space saving Gastronorm system from galley experts GN Espace, an ergonomic solution designed to use the sink, workspace and oven most efficiently and one I’m always surprised more new yachts don’t employ. It uses cooking trays that are designed to maximise the oven size and to stow neatly in or on the sink, for example.

yachting world solaris 50

Airy owners’ cabin. The aft section of the berth lifts on struts. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

The galley has more smart solutions in a coffee area, and a large bin section which can open out hands-free. A large locker below the sink can be used for stowage or a dishwasher. Extra refrigeration space is offered on top of the standard 120lt top opener, while there’s also an option to fit a washing machine instead of the practical wet locker in the aft heads shower compartment.

Shelving on the main bulkhead and tasteful lighting helps make for an attractive saloon. It’s comfortable too. The starboard sofa berth suits relaxation, with its thick, lower cushioning, and the saloon’s bench seat slides out to starboard so you can use it as a footrest. This berth remains separate to the navstation, which has its own swing out stool for working facing outboard.

yachting world solaris 50

Aft cabins can be twin, doubles, or twins with a fill-in. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud

There were still a few modifications needed on the test boat. While the integral rail above the navstation and starboard sofa is a standard fit, some more handholds would be useful at heel or in a seaway. A handrail can be specified on the headlining and Arcona is considering adding a rail to the galley countertop. The yard will also likely change the aft heads door to open outwards as it’s currently quite tight to close the door once you enter.

The cabins are all of generous size, again with plenty of natural light and dimmable LED lighting. The owner’s ensuite cabin includes a neat forward facing coachroof window, plus there are double hatches above the berth.

While the double locker in its entrance is not wardrobe depth, it does have a removable panel to access a deeper section for hanging longer clothes, and the bed lifts easily on struts to give access to the large stowage space below.

In general, stowage is practical, especially in the raised lockers which run through the boat. The tanks are fitted below the sole, leaving largely stowage space below the saloon berths. Between the aft cabins is a narrow but valuable service locker. Aboard Dancing Queen this contained the optional 10kW generator, which Lagnéus considers the best choice for those who want to run aircon or a watermaker. The battery bank meanwhile is below the navstation and starboard saloon berth, with the upgraded three lithium batteries providing 640Ah at 24V.

This is a sparkly new addition to the luxury performance cruiser market, and one that’s been executed very well. Its looks are backed up by high build and finish quality and performance on the water. While I doubt it’ll be raced (like the smaller Arconas often are), or will suit typical bluewater use, it offers a purity of performance push-button sailing. Where the Arcona is a handsome prospect upwind in a light breeze, it transforms into a powerful reaching machine with stacks of control. The €1m+ question is whether there’s room for yet another premium cruiser brand at this size? Time will tell. Arcona obviously feels there’s space to play here – and by pricing this above its direct competitors yet below Swan, it’s suggesting exactly where this model sits. Having sailed No1 Dancing Queen, I’d have little hesitation in recommending this model. Yet I’m equally excited about Arcona’s revival and to see how this flagship helps propel its mainstay 35-45ft models in the years to come.

Contemporary-looking Solaris 50 designed for short-handed global cruising

  • March 13, 2015

Just as cool, but half the price of her sister, the Solaris 58

yachting world solaris 50

A cool-looking 50-footer

This new 50-footer follows the fiendishly cool Solaris 58, which launched in early 2014 – including the pièce-de-resistance dreadnought bow and subtle aft chines. But, at nearly half the price of her larger sister, the Solaris 50 should prove a popular choice.

As the latest Acebal-designed range of Solaris yachts become increasingly sleeker, one thing hasn’t changed: their build quality remains top-drawer.

Javier Soto Acebal has drawn a hull that promises strong performance with a soft motion. It will have an integrated bowsprit for flying Code 0s and gennakers, and a self-tacking jib as standard for easy short-handed sailing.

Stowage has been well-considered throughout. The large sail locker can be converted to a crew cabin and a longitudinal garage will facilitate the launch and recovery of a tender. There is dedicated liferaft stowage and a wet-hanging locker inside, with drip tray and drainage.

Solaris is also finishing a custom-built 55. Although this is still a contemporary design, it will be much more a bluewater-orientated yacht with a sleek deck saloon, designed for short-handed global cruising.

Three Solaris 50s have already sold off plan, pre-launch and the 40-year-old yard in Aquileia already has five of the new 58s under construction.

Price ex VAT €480,000 (£387,000).

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

  • By Yachting Staff
  • January 9, 2024

Lürssen Lady Lara

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

Lürssen Lady Lara

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

Lürssen Lady Lara

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

Lürssen Lady Lara

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.
