SWAN 48MKII

The evolution of the myth.

A Swan model is alive even after years of production. Listening to customers, captains, testing and experiencing Swan’s boats continuously, both cruising and racing, the yard evolves and improves their models constantly.

Saying this, after more than 50 units sold of the iconic Swan 48, the team at Nautor collected a number of improvements to be converted into standard and optional items that led to the Swan 48 MKII.

On deck the innovations include a new bowsprit design and new chainplate position, while the coachroof features a new design for the windows. The transom door is now opened by a system of hydraulic pistons to enhance functionality.

The interiors feature an innovative Corian design with rounded corners and a lower galley curved furniture style.  A more comfortable sofa design: enhancing storage volumes and some other optional additions to add a very high comfort level onboard.

Swan 48 MKII

For Nautor Swan, 48 is a magic number. One of the most iconic Swans ever was born in 1971 under this number: the mythical Swan 48. Designed by the best yacht designer of that time, indeed one of the best of all times, Sparkman & Stephens of New York, this iconic yacht won some of the most prestigious offshore races, like the Bermuda Race and Transatlantic Race and achieving selection for the Admiral’s Cup – the “Formula One” race series of that time.

However, racing was not the main purpose of the boat: like any Swan, she was born to be a perfect family cruiser, capable of sailing around the world in total safety and comfort. Quoting from the original brochure: “With many international races behind her – the Swan 48 is keeping up an irresistible challenge as top class ocean racer. With the speed of a bird of prey she combines the luxury and grace which make her the swift, smooth-going Swan of tomorrow. The Swan 48 is equipped to the highest professional standards and the woodwork has the class given it by the Nautor specialists, men who have learnt their crafts around the Gulf of Bothnia, where woodwork and shipbuilding skills are traditional. The unique design and professional skills behind the Swan 48 make her the complete ocean cruising racer.” To prove this, 46 units were sold during five years of production. Following the same principles, in 1995 Germán Frers designed a new Swan 48 with the same level of grace and performance as the original one: another shining success, with 57 yachts built. In 2019, almost forty years after the original one, another mythical Swan 48 has been launched and with more than 50 units sold, and 2023 was the best time to gift our owners with a new release, the Swan 48 MKII.

48 foot sailboat

The architect

Germán frers.

The hull lines are designed by maestro Germán Frers as a combination of performance, comfort at sea and liveability on deck and inside the yacht. The result is a very well-balanced hull, with a new design for the bowsprit, giving great functionality for anchor and tack line.

The hull is optimized to give max performance heeling at 20 degrees, leaving the boat comfortable and fully liveable at sea in any condition. The twin rudder configuration enhances the balance of the boat, preventing the broaching tendency and therefore giving back full sensitivity and pleasure while steering at full heeling angles. At the same time, the reduced draft of the double rudder blades increases the cruising ability, allowing access, together with the highly efficient T shaped contained draft keel, to shallow waters and smaller fishing harbours. On the racing front, the 48 MKII, perfectly in line with Swan tradition, is conceived to be a winner. Waterlines are designed with performance in mind and the full package is set up for getting the best even by a non professional crew.

The leitmotiv of the latest generation of Swans is balance, and this is clearly visible in the sail plan. This goes together with the full naval architecture, to give the best combination between performance, safety and easy sailing. The mast well aft brings several advantages: a good balance between mainsail and jib, the latter being able to give good power sailing downwind, the possibility to set 4 different forestays – furling gennaker, Code 0, jib and staysail, and a well manageable mainsail with the stability of a wide spreader architecture.  In addition, the standard bowsprit helps to bring further forward Code 0 and spinnaker tacks, enhancing performances in light conditions and making it easier to fly and jibe the kites. Jib cars are conveniently positioned on top of the coachroof, with sheets passing under-deck and going straight to winches, making tacking easy and fast and keeping side decks clean and uncluttered. As an option, a self tacking track for staysail or jib is positioned in a dedicated recessed housing.  Safety is always a priority on a Swan. For this, a special solution for the main sheet has been studied, to prevent the sheet crossing the whole cockpit and to reduce the danger resulting from of an accidental jibe.

48 foot sailboat

with options

Like every Swan, the deck plan has been conceived for maximum efficiency, safety, comfort, aesthetics and character.

The coachroof design has been made more contemporary, with the new windows following the same style used for the brand new Swan 55. It keeps a combination of soft curves and faceted surfaces.

The cockpit, well protected by deep coamings for the whole length, maintains the typical Swan hallmark organization: forward area dedicated to guests, fully protected by sprayhood and bimini, central section where all the gear to handle the boat is concentrated, with all winches easily reachable by the helmsman, aft area dedicated to sunbathing and direct access to the sea via a large opening platform, with an innovative opening hydraulic system to enhance functionality to access the tender garage.

48 foot sailboat

The interior designer

With the classic style and elegance from Misa Poggi’s pencil, the Swan 48 MKII boasts an interior arrangement providing a clear feeling of space and volume.

The three cabin layout comprises the owner forward with a private head, a VIP cabin starboard and a guest cabin portside, both aft.

The two heads are a statement of comfort and space, both with a fully separate shower compartments, with tempered glass shower doors.

Located at the centre of the boat, the main saloon is open wide, with a C shape sofa with an optional lowering/sliding/folding table for greater flexibility. The natural light irradiating from three different levels, giving brightness to the whole space.

The chart table on the starboard side, comes in three different layouts: flipper style, forward facing with seat and storage or with table and sofa.

The galley configuration offers freedom of movement at 360° in every condition, with a domestic size fridge and valuable volumes for storage, with new optional galley lockers above galley sink and new top surface design in Corian, with rounded corners, easier to clean.

The soundproofed engine room guarantees good accessibility and includes a dedicated space for an optional genset

For styling and finishing, the Swan 48 MKII maintains the four different moods proposed by our interior designer Misa Poggi: Swan Soul, which embodies the typical Swan style, Scandi Vision inspired by Scandinavian design, and Velvet Vibe Red and Velvet Vibe Blue, which reflect a warm atmosphere and a more intense taste.

These styles make a degree of customization possible, making every Swan 48 MKII unique and close to the owner’s lifestyle.

Boat Review: Hylas 48

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: June 12, 2019

Cruising, racing, daysailing, chartering: Every sailboat is built to meet a need. But in the course of inspecting and sailing some 20-odd vessels during and after the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, each fall, CW’s Boat of the Year judges sometimes have to rely on the builder to make that intent clear.

Not so with the new Hylas 48. From its solid stainless-steel stem fitting and double anchor rollers to a versatile cutter rig, hip-high life lines and robust emergency- steering system, not one of the judges doubted that this was intended to be a long-legged, bluewater voyager.

They were so certain, in fact, they named the Hylas 48 the Best Full-Size Cruiser Under 48 Feet. In being so recognized, the newest yacht from Taiwan’s Queen Long Marine joins a number of its siblings that have received similar accolades over the three generations the family-owned yard has been in operation.

“I’ve always been amazed at how well this boatyard does,” said veteran BOTY technical judge Ed Sherman. “This is a situation where we’ve got an experienced Taiwanese workforce, and they’re artisans. They take what they do seriously, and they do a very good job.”

Sherman’s colleague, judge Alvah Simon, ticked off the reasons he thought the 48 rose to the top of the fleet: “The flow on deck was good, the nonskid was good, the pushpit and pulpit were just excellent. The stanchions were outboard of the toe rail. The vents and hatches were just incredible. I can’t imagine the cost in the stainless-steel work. Lots of good ventilation. Cleats were good. Lifelines were very good.” Simon even praised the size and location of the manual bilge pumps, in close proximity to the helm.

Though the Bill Dixon-designed H48 is somewhat a departure from the builder’s longtime collaboration with Germán Frers, the boat still has the look and feel of a Hylas, with its center-cockpit deck layout and sugar-scoop transom with steps for boarding from the dinghy.

There is a long traveler just aft of the cockpit, mounted on the aft cabin’s roof. And forward, the cutter rig provides a self-tacking jib for upwind work and a genoa that’s mounted forward of it for light-air conditions or when off the wind. Headsail furlers and the in-mast furler for the main are all electric and operated by switches at the wheel.

Underway on Chesapeake Bay, the Hylas definitely had the feel of a heavier displacement cruiser. In 8 or so knots of breeze, we tacked upwind at a not-too-shabby 5.7 knots — I should mention that the Mamba rod steering delighted the fingertips. Bearing off, the speed dipped slightly with just the jib set but bounced back when we rolled out the genny.

It was the boat’s motion, though, that really caught everyone’s attention. “It felt very stiff — in a good way,” noted judge Tim Murphy. “When we were coming down the Severn River, there were powerboats loading in for the next boat show, doing testing and whatnot, and this was kind of an old-school cruising boat feeling when you’d come through those wakes. She just really powered through.”

The H48’s hull is hand-laid, solid fiberglass, with vinylester resin and Isophthalic gelcoat. Below the water line, there are two layers of epoxy barrier coat to prevent blisters. The deck, also hand-laid, is balsa cored. Watertight bulkheads are located at both the bow and stern to enclose the interior in case of a collision.

The boat’s deck-saloon interior is stunning. Wraparound windows in the coachroof provide lots of daylight and a panoramic view. The white composite cabin top and ceiling sits atop rich teak cabinetry, bulkheads and furniture, and the teak-and-holly sole radiates warmth. Deep fiddles line the counters, and all edges and corners are rounded — as they should be.

The boat’s layout is fairly traditional for a center cockpit. A large dining table dominates the saloon, with U-shaped seating to port and a cushioned bench on the centerline. A curved settee is opposite, flanked by a cabinet forward and the nav station and electrical panel aft, near the foot of the companionway. The sole is raised, which both helps the view when seated and allows for tankage and machinery down low in the hull, where it belongs.

To port of the steps, the galley takes up both sides of the passageway leading to the aft cabin. Counter space abounds, as does storage, both under and outboard. The fridge and freezer are top and front opening, and they are located adjacent to the three-burner propane stove and oven.

To port, a walk-through head and shower also leads to the aft cabin, a cozy compartment that any owner should be pleased to call home. An island queen berth sits on a slightly raised sole. In the daytime, light pours in through overhead opening hatches and ports located to either side and behind the bed.

There are two more cabins forward of the saloon, plus a second generously sized head and shower to starboard. To port, there are double bunks for kids or crew; forward, the guest cabin also has an island queen berth.

On deck, the step in and out of the cockpit is a big one, but the Bimini top’s robust frame provides a good handhold, and once inside, there’s not a pressing need to leave.

Sail controls all lead to electric Antal winches adjacent to the wheel, and as mentioned earlier, reefing of sails is a push-button affair, as is operation of the bow thruster. Thick seat and back cushions line the seating area, and the tall coamings provide plenty of support for any crew intent on sitting back and enjoying the ride.

All the comfort and convenience has a cost, of course. The price tag for the H48 starts at right around $730,000; the boat we sailed runs closer to $850,000. Still, I’ll let Simon put that into perspective: “I see real value in this boat because it’s solidly put together. It’s a very elegant-looking boat, and for a couple that wants that kind of bluewater cruiser, I think they’re in for a sweet ride.”

Mark Pillsbury is CW ‘s editor.

Easily sleeps 5 and is legally registered to have charters for up to six persons. Gusto" Is an incredibly well founded safe and comfortable vessel. She has made trips from Boston to Central America and back several times. She is a full keel vessel that offers a high degree of stability and comfort in any seas The below is my last survey May 30, 2012 Yacht Survey and Condition Report At the request of Mr. Peter M Licnikas the undersigned surveyor conducted a condition and valuation survey of the yacht “GUST-O” a 1978 48 ft Mermaid Ketch sailboat as it lay on jack stands at Yankee Landing Marina Merrimac St, Newburyport, Ma 01951. Name: GUST-O Year: 1978 Builder: Pali Shiang Taipei Hsien, Taiwan Model: Mermaid 42 Ketch Documented: 624951 Hull ID: TAC420251278 Dimensions: LOA 48' LOD 42' Beam 12’2” Draft 6’3” Displacement: 14 net tons Type: Sail Intended Use: Pleasure Hull Graphics and Color: White hull, green bottom Estimated present Value: $71,200.00 Estimated replacement value $245.000.00 Scope of Survey: The purpose of this survey was to estimate the current market value and marine risk evaluation. The survey of this vessel is based solely on careful visual and non-destructive inspection of all accessible portions of its structure and available equipment. Complete inspection can only be made by removal of soles, decking, headliners, ceiling or hull lining, tanks, and joiner work. Complete inspection of machinery, auxiliaries, piping, tanks, systems, electrical wiring, electrical and electronic equipment can only be made by continued operation or by disassembly. This would be damaging in nature and prohibitively time consuming, and therefore was not done. This vessel was surveyed while in lay up at Yankee Landing Marina, Merrimac St. Newburyport, Ma 01951. I visually inspected all sections of the vessel and its equipment detailed in this report. General Description: This hull is a reinforced fiberglass molding hand laid up using alternate layers of mat and woven roven with polyester resin. It is stiffened with web floors, bulkheads and joinery flanges. The hull design incorporates a molded lead filled keel and rudder for ballast. The hull is heavily built and is rigged as a Ketch designed for sail with a 45’ main mast, and 25’ mizzen mast. Bottom: Underwater surfaces were smooth and fair with no signs of damage or recent groundings. The bottom paint was in fair condition. I sounded the entire hull with a phenolic hammer and found no voids, blisters or delamination. I also placed an Electro-physics moisture meter on the hull and found it to be in the acceptable dry range with readings of 15 and less. Through hull fittings were all bronze and appeared original and in good condition, however none were removed for inspection. I observed several through hull fittings that were plugged or partially blocked by barnacles and growth. I recommend the fittings be cored out. The keel is lead filled for ballast rated 9400lbs. The propeller shaft is a 1” in diameter stainless steel supported with a rubber stern bearing with an external housing, all in good condition. I placed a target on the shaft and rotated it. The shaft tracked true within visual tolerances. The rudder is supported at the top with a 1.5” bronze shaft. The shaft and bearings turned smoothly with no signs of wear. Boot top up was white epoxy paint. The paint was in overall good condition with only minor scuffs. I observed one deep scratch on the starboard side that I recommend be repaired to prevent moisture intrusion into the underlying fiberglass. Topsides: Topside teak wood has been removed and replaced with fiberglass with non skid. The topsides were in good condition solid with no signs of moisture or rot. Cabin ventilation is through four Lexan covered 24”X24” teak hatches and four brass 6” air scoops. The life rail was rubber coated stainless steel cable with stainless steel stanchions. All stanchions were well secured and solid. All cleats were stainless and wood in good condition well bedded and solid. The rub rail is teak in good condition. Tanks: The two fuel tanks were rectangle in shape located under the cabin sole. The tanks were aluminum and well secured with proper fill and vents and rated at a total of 88 gallons. Water tanks were rectangle in shape and located under the cockpit sole. The tanks were well secured and fitted with proper vents and fill. The tanks were rated at 110 gallons. Spars & Rigging: Masts and booms are constructed of wood and appeared straight and in good condition. Both masts were rigged with no stretch stainless steel cable and turnbuckles. All rigging was in good condition well secured to the hull and properly tightened. The masts were in need of new paint. Hull Interior: Below decks I removed loose floorboards, opened lockers, and removed drawers for the best inspection of the hull interior and bilge area. I found all bulkheads to be secure with no signs of stress or damage, and the bilges to be in need of a minor cleaning. The interior was finished in custom teak in good condition, and consisted of a V berth forward with full head and shower. To the rear was a salon area consisting of a bench seat on the starboard side and a dinette on the port side. To the rear of the dinette was a galley consisting of a 4 burner natural gas stove with oven, ice box, and double stainless steel sink. The starboard side contained a large chart table with electrical panel. To the rear was a second full head on the starboard side and large master stateroom with queen size bunk. Bilges where sited were generally clean. Bilge pumping was with one super gulper manual pump in the galley. Along with a 12v rule 1500 main pump, and a rule 1000 backup. Steering on board is a pedestal center post with a 3’6” wheel turning a Sea Star hydraulic system rated at 1000 psi. Electrical: The vessels electrical supply is both 120ac powered by a shore power cord only, and 12v. The shore power only powers several outlets. All AC outlets were GFI protected except the outlet near the chart table. I recommend that outlet be changed to a GFI outlet in accordance with ABYC recommended practices. The 12v system not powered up at this time. The 12v wiring was well run, secured, and appropriately sized with a breaker panel and battery selector switch mounted above the chart table in accordance with ABYC recommended practices. The 12 v system was powered with three 800 amp combination starting/house batteries and one 1200 amp and 1000 amp dedicated house batteries. All batteries were in acid proof boxes and well secured located under the aft bunk. Fire Protection: Fire extinguishers consisted of four BC size I. Propulsion Machinery: The yacht power is from a 1978 Perkins 4108 diesel rated at 80 hp. The engine has a 60 amp alternator for charging the starting and house batteries. Engine compartment ventilation was through two 3” intake and exhaust. Engine mounts bolt to steel I beam beds with no apparent signs of movement. Fuel lines are copper hose in good condition. Engine seawater intake is through a bronze ball valve with sea strainer. Engine exhaust is direct to the transom through rubber hose. Fuel filtering is with a Racor filter/water separator in good working order. Lube oil was clean and filled to the proper level. Engine was not running at this time due to winter layup. Engine controls were mounted in the rear cockpit with a single throttle/shift lever with push pull cables. The cables functioned smoothly and were in good working order. THERE IS NO WARRANTY GIVEN OR IMPLIED FOR THE FUTURE USE OR LIFE OF THE ENGINE DESCRIBED HEREIN. Ground Tackle: Ground tackle on board consists of a 40 lb plow type anchor with a good lead of chain and of 5/8” nylon anchor rode. The Tayana 37 has been constructed of the finest materials, using the best techniques. There is no better yacht in her size range on the market. With care and proper maintenance she will not only prove to be an excellent investment, she will take you cruising anywhere in the world safely and comfortably. This is being proven almost daily. Ocean crossings by Tayana 37’s are routine. Circumnavigations have been reported. By the same token, over 500 of these yachts are the primary homes of their owners. Condition: She has had many upgrades over the time that I have owned her (6 years). New Awlgrip topsides and decks (2016), Propane stove 2014, new fuel tank (2013), New canvass (2013), Cabin heater (2014), new tile counters (2015), new bowsprit (2013), bottom job (latest summer 2016), new cushions in main salon and forward cabin (2017). Make Nautor's Swan

Model 48 Sloop

Category Sailboats

1972 Nautor's Swan 48 Sloop “CONSTELLATION” has a long nautical history and has played a very important part in the sailing and military heritage of the USA.  The United States Naval Academy owned this beautiful sailboat from December, 1979 to December, 1997, when it was sold to the current owner. She was sailed and won the 653-mile Newport-to-Bermuda Race for the first time in Naval Academy history in June, 1992, with Ensign Kyle Weaver at the helm along with his 8 midshipmen crew.  Ensign Weaver was the youngest skipper to win this race and bring home the St. David's Lighthouse Trophy.  This incredible accomplishment is still remembered among midshipmen everywhere. Today, Commander Weaver is still serving his country in the US Navy. The “CONSTELLATION” was designed by Sparkman & Stephens of New York and built in 1972 (Hull 11) in Finland with the Swan “Passion for Craftsmanship”.  Nautor’s Swan has been the true sailor’s choice for close to a half a century by designing and building luxurious, high performance yachts in Northern Finland. Swan has a strong heritage, skilled craftsmen, and pursuit of excellence in every aspect of the build. The current owner took three (3) years refitting the “CONSTELLATION” in order to make her comfortable for cruising, mechanically sound, and capable of sailing any blue water challenge.  Since 1997, the boat has received complete upgrades and refits including new teak decks, total new electrical wiring, new plumbing, new stainless steel fuel tanks, new water and holding tanks, new Yanmar 76HP turbo engine, new Panda 3.9KW Generator, which is located is a custom slide-out cabinet for easy access.  She has been refitted with (2) Barient 28 3-speed coffee grinders, (2) Andersen 62ST 2-speed electric winches, (2) air conditioning/heating compressors, water maker (virgin, never used), Zeda water purifier, and the list goes on and on.  “CONSTELLATION” is a cutter rig with only 46 having been built from 1971-1975. The original boat design was changed in the 1990’s and is now known as a Nautor’s Swan 48-2 with emphasis on cruising versus racing, although the racing prowess and success is achievable, if desired.  The “CONSTELLATION” is a once in a life time opportunity to own a part of America’s United States Naval Academy heritage and still enjoy a magnificent cruising wonder and adventure on any of the world’s waters. We are very proud to represent this pristine Swan 48 and welcome the opportunity to show her to you. Give us a call. You will not be disappointed! BE SURE TO OPE
