If you’re looking for a San Diego harbor cruise, you have options; we aren’t going to pretend to be the only boat in the bay. But, if you have ever experienced a sail on a cat, you’ll know why we are a bit biased.

Triton Charters is definitely the largest catamaran yacht rental I’ve done in San Diego. Crew was super awesome and the Captain provided us with a smooth sail start to finish. Wonderful!

Lenny Leszczynski  is a car guy, dating back to his days as a young man who drove a Daytona Blue  1964 Chevy Impala,  but his wife was not expecting him to land this job.

 After all, Lenny had never been a CEO before. He did take advantage of all the free time the pandemic gave us by going back to school to earn an advanced degree. He was in Disneyland with his wife and kids hours after his job interview when he received the call.

He got the job. He was the new CEO of the  San Diego Automotive Museum  located in Balboa Park.  

 That was four years ago. Since then, Lenny and his team have taken several steps to breathe new life into the automotive museum, and they have some ambitious plans for one of the city’s coolest spaces.

And Lenny knows a thing or two about cool. Just ask him about that Impala he purchased when he was 17.

He discusses all that and more with Tony and Juan in this episode of Dear San Diego.

AztecFAST Showcase shows offense still getting up to speed, but making progress

San Diego State football coach Sean Lewis branded SDSU’s offense “AztecFAST” virtually the moment he was hired.

The assumption was that FAST references rhythm, speed and tempo. And points, plenty of points.

It does include all that, with Lewis saying: “I’m looking forward to bringing that excitement, that brand of football, where we’re lighting up the scoreboard, where we’re playing fast, where we’re being balanced but there’s a brand and an energy to what we bring.”

But, according to the coach, FAST also is an acronym:

Fun, accountable, smart and tough.

After Saturday’s AztecFAST Showcase at Snapdragon Stadium, here was another one:

First attempt, Stay tuned.

If fast is 100 mph, then the Aztecs were barely breaking the speed limit in the spring game.

“That’s a fair assessment,” Lewis said. “Day 1, we were out there and it looked like we were sitting in the school zone and today we’re kind of on the (Interstate) 15. Hopefully, by the time we get to the season, we’re on the Autobahn and we can roll a little bit.”

The quarterbacks

All four quarterbacks competing to start — Florida State sophomore transfer AJ Duffy , sophomore Kyle Crum , redshirt freshman Javance Tupou’ata-Johnson and true freshman Danny O’Neil — were given an opportunity to play Saturday.

The scrimmage portion of the practice included five touchdowns (four passing) and four field goals. It should be noted that several of the scores came during red zone work that did not require driving the length of the field.

Duffy (7-for-11, 112 yards) threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Louis Brown IV and a 36-yarder to tight end Jude Wolfe.

Tupou’ata-Johnson (6-for-11, 69 yards) threw an 8-yard TD pass to tight end Gabe Garretson; Crum (5-for-7, 36 yards) had a 9-yard TD pass to wide receiver Jordan Napier. O’Neil completed 2 of 6 passes for 15 yards.

Duffy was first on the field, as he has been throughout the spring.

The surprise was when Tupou’ata-Johnson, a 6-foot-4 Oakland native, came out for the second series. He was fourth in the rotation when spring camp began.

“He’s continued to take strides,” Lewis said. “Really doing a good job. He needs to continue to work on the different types of pitches that he throws, but he’s taking strides learning how to process, how to throw with anticipation and he’s doing a good job.”

Before too much is made of Tupou’ata-Johnson’s progress, it should be noted that during red zone work to conclude the scrimmage, Duffy and O’Neil traded off the last eight series.

“The two of them are a little bit ahead of the rest of the pack right now,” Lewis said. “They’ve been the most consistent guys. ... Still lots of room for them to grow as we move through, but they’ve grasped everything as quick as anyone in the room, been able to process the information faster than anyone and they’ve got good arm talent to put it all together.”

Lewis said a starting quarterback will not be named until after the team begins preseason workouts in August.

“I’d like to (name a starter) as soon as possible,” Lewis said, “but I’m not going to be rushed to make a decision in that regard.

“The sooner the better, so that the guys know who the leader of our team is going to be.”

While there is another opportunity right now for player acquisition through the NCAA transfer portal, the Aztecs are not expected to bring in another quarterback.

“I think one of these guys will be the guy,” Lewis.

Catching on

Brown (5 catches, 79 yards) and Napier (5-46) led the receivers in catches, followed by Baylin Brooks (3-40) and Mikey Welsh (3-13).

“We left some stuff out there that we should have capitalized on,” said Brown, a Colorado State transfer, “but from the first practice to the last practice today I felt like we put in a lot (of improvement). ...

“We want to get the defense tired and off track so we can go score points. I feel like we can definitely go way faster than we’re going.”

About the defense

Cornerback Jakson Berman , a walk-on transfer from Washington, came away with the scrimmage’s only turnover when he picked off a pass from O’Neil.

Berman was instructed not to try a return, so he punctuated the play with a backflip.

Linebacker Cody Moon led the defense with five tackles.

Utah transfer linebacker Owen Chambliss , a standout throughout camp, was among five others with four tackles.

Linebacker DJ Herman had the only sack.

“They did their job,” Northern Iowa transfer safety Dalesean Staley said of the offense. “They got the ball out. They caught the ball. They ran the ball. They were pushing our defense. But our defense was answering back. ... We got some stops and some (pass breakups). I feel like we responded very well.”

SDSU special teams coordinator Zac Barton said this week that the kicking competition that included junior returner Gabriel Plascencia , Fresno State transfe r Abraham Montano and Louisville senior transfer Nick Lopez was extremely close.

It remains so.

The kickers attempted four field goals ranging from 29 to 48 yards early in the workout.

All three missed from 48 yards. Lopez was good on his other attempts, while Plascencia missed right on a 45-yard attempt and Montano missed a 40-yard attempt that went off the right upright.

During the scrimmage, Lopez made a 35-yarder, Plascencia made a 42-yarder and Montano made a 43-yarder, so the decision may come down to rock, paper, scissors.

Cathedral Catholic High School grad Lucky Sutton (11 carries, 36 yards) had a 1-yard touchdown run while leading the running backs in carries and yards.

Other rushing totals: Kenan Christon (7-21), Martin Blake (3-20), Cam Davis (6-14) and Jaylon Armstead (5-11).

• Graduate transfer wide receiver Ja’Shaun Poke did not participate, sidelined with an apparent lower left leg injury regarded as minor. Poke, who transferred from West Virginia and played for Lewis at Kent State, was regarded as the top performer among the receivers this spring.

• Others who watched from the sidelines with various undisclosed injuries included Wide receivers Phillippe Wesley Jr. and Darius Hyde , running back Anthony McMillian , and offensive linemen Myles Murao , Ross Ulugalu-Maseuli and Briley Barron .

• An estimated 3,000 fans attended the event, the largest gathering for SDSU’s spring game in at least two decades.

One other opportunity to see the team at Snapdragon Stadium is expected during a mid-August scrimmage before the 2024 season opener Aug. 31 at home against Texas A&M-Commerce.
