Exclusive Superyacht charter Ponzine Islands itinerary

Introduction

mega yacht a ponza

For all those keen on alternative yachting destinations, where you can experience best of local culture, cuisine, history and events, there is one Italian region that is pretty much unexplored by international guests visiting this fabulous country.  Most of the mega yachts and in general luxury boats tend to congregate or are chartered out in North East Sardinia around resorts such as Porto Cervo, Porto Rottondo and Olbia or indeed around Island of Capri, Naples and Positano within the Amalfi coast and indeed Italian Riviera around Positano which is also popular ONE WAY charter stop for those starting out or finishing alongside French Riviera and in particular Gulf of St Tropez and Cap d’Antibes.  The best alternatives to that, Aeolian Islands around Sicily, Messina Strait with Siracusa, Catania and around Sicily and to some extent, at least for Italian and German tourists by majority Island of Elba and Tuscany. To avoid crowds and to ensure you do have a chance to experience best of Italy, you should consider luxury yacht charter out of Naples, but than turn North, North West towards Islands of Ponza and Ischia, or more accurately towards Isole Ponziane as Italians would say.  You would than explore remote, uninihabited or as they case may be with Ponza, luxury retreats.  Islands of Ventotene, Polmarola, Zannone and others await for those who wish to self-isolate, escape and yet still enjoy Italian lifestyle par-excellence.

With reasonably steady winds between 5-20kn expected each summer,we assume you will be able to sail most of the time and enjoy spending a luxury sailing holiday alongside the secluded Islands of Pontine archipelago.  Neighbouring Campania region and province of Latina have seen little covid-19 infections and there were little reports of any new ones.  The area is known for a mixture of Italian flair and lifestyle, rich Roman history, lovely anchorages, well managed but also many secluded beaches and a few fascinating archaeological sites.

Day 1 / Destination: Naples

mega yacht a ponza

Embarkation in NAPLES –port to be confirmed

Immediate sail to CAPRI

First swim on the way to Capri

Dinner at ‘’DA PAOLINOS’’ on ISLAND Capri

We suggest that you spend some time with the crew to get to know each other, enjoying suitable drinks as identified on preference sheet, and checking the 24-48h weather forecast. You can set off for Capri as soon as you embark or sample a few bays and anchorages nearby for your first swim and sunbathing on deck.

I also suggest you give us a call on +44 779 205 2007 or request a call back around 6pm/18h local time to ensure all is well as expected and as it should be.  As a minimum, we would love to get a text or WhatsApp message that will confirm you have arrived on time, all is well on board and you have had a great start to the charter.

Day 2 / Destination: Capri

mega yacht a ponza

Breakfast on island Capri

Late morning or afternoon sail to PROCIDA

Dinner on board or Restaurant Pizza Fuego

Together with Ischia, Procida and Vivara, all of who look towards North to Flegrea coastline, Capri is part of so called Partenopean islands and is most southerly and most prestigious of these. Preferred destination for many boaters, it is located between Cape Miseno and Amalfi town and it has two levels.

First, there is a walking and shopping area right around the marina and the main town, while the top of Capri, from where beautiful views towards Anacapri are visible, accessible by the funicular, is the area tiny designer shops and many street cafes.Moorings may be expensive but are even more difficult to get, yet staying in port is recommendable on this night to allow you to easily visit the town. Visits to Certosa of San Giacomo, Palazzo Cerio, and the Villa of San Michele in Anacapri are popular afternoon breaks. The evenings can also be spent in one of the Micheline restaurants, with Salvatore Elefante’s Il Riccio being the best known. Also, the beach club La Fontelina, built against the rocks and with plenty of sunloungers, could be a place to enjoy an afternoon too.

If you have not yet visited, the Blue Grotto receives visitors strictly during opening hours with obligatory transfer into a Blue Grotto boat. Visiting early to avoid crowds may be recommended this summer and if you fancy a longer stay, there is a good restaurant nearby. It can be ideal start to the day on Monday morning, before setting off for Procida.

Day 3 / Destination: Island Procida

Breakfast on island Procida

Late morning or early afternoon sail to ISCHIA

Dinner at IL MONASTERO on Ischia

One of the most charming of islands, the peaceful island of Procida is maybe a secret recommendation. As an undiscovered gem, she has flourishing gardens and fragrant lemon and orange groves in abundance. The smallest and oldest island in the Bay of Naples, Ponza is joined by a bridge to a tiny island of Vivara. Arriving at the harbour Marina Grande you’ll have the wonderful view of fishers’ houses in pastell colours, being reflected by the deep blue water. There are a number of small coves and inlets strung along the coastline, inspiring you to swim or nap if you don’t feel like a tour around the island. Yet, by day’s end, you will not want to have missed a refreshing, relaxing pause at Corricella. Here, amidst boats and fishermen’s nets, you sit in the shade of long stairways and houses that have communal courtyards where you can enjoy a local drink at any time of the day.

If you have time, head to Terra Murata, Procida’s vibrant historic centre. Get lost in its winding streets and visit the old Royal Palace of Palazzo d’Avalos or wander around its church, Chiesa di Santa Margherita Nuvoa, which boasts beautiful views overlooking Capri.

Day 4 / Destination: Island Ischia

mega yacht a ponza

Breakfast on Ischia East Side

Late morning or early afternoon sail to ISLAND ISCHIA / North West Side

Hiking around two beaches

Visit to a Thermal Spa and visit to vineyard Dinner at MezzaTorre resort on 6th Aug

It’s a relatively short sailing distance from Procida to Ischia. You will most likely spend the 1st day at anchor around the southern coast of the island in Sant’Angelo. Here it may be interesting to explore the Castello Argonese and than take a short hike around one of the prettiest walks in Ischia, between La Fumarole beach, where both locals and tourist mingle to cook fresh seafood on its thermal vapour hot spots, and the Maronti beach. Constant volcanic activity creates a steam which rises to the top of the beach, heating up some specific places to such a degree that locals often cook food right there in the sand. For a hike, it takes less than an hour from start to finish and covers some breathtaking cliff-top scenery, lovely villas with exemplary flower gardens and potentially a thermal spa break. It will take another hour to go back, providing you with a perfect 2hrs hike, or you can ask your captain to wait for you with the tender on the other side. Alternatively, the island is known for many other hiking routes. Sentieri Della Lucertola are a series of scenic paths around Ischia, all created to allow walkers of all abilities and fitness levels a choice of trekking routes. One of the most demanding is Mount Epomeo trek and local companies offer Tour Guides too.

Day 5 / Destination: Island Ischia

Breakfast on Ischia North Side

Stay all day at this island – Exploring MezzaTorre resort and town nearby

Dinner on board

Apart from that, the island is known for rabbit meat specialities and some of the family members may wish to try one such offer in local restaurants.  Finally, mineral qualities of the various thermal springs and volcanic muds offer potential health benefits and visits to one of the spas, including volcanic thermal water and mud treatments at places such as www.mezzatorre.it  is where you will want to spend your 2nd day on the island of Ischia.

Unique to Ischia are “Spa Gardens”, where thermal pools of various temperatures and mineral content are spread throughout a park like setting. Aphrodite Thermal Gardens within the Miramare hotel complex based between the Maronti and La Fumarole beaches is one where you could go for a relaxing treatment for example. The other well known one is Nogombo Spa Garden with sculptures set between many mini thermal pools and springs, all cascading down a hillside which offer amazing views of the coastline.

One of the best ways to spend one afternoon away from the beach or usual sunbathing and swimming time, is visit to the local vineyard of Pietra Torcia. A reservation can be made for your arrival which will allow you to sample local vines, have a tour of their entire operation and buy newly discovered reds. Their local restaurants may also be a choice for the late lunch before the return to your superyacht.

Day 6 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island Ventotene

Morning on Ischia – early morning sail to Island VENTOTENE

Dinner at Marisqueria

On this day you can head far out into the Mediterranean Sea, towards Pontine islands and reach for the lively island of Ventotene. The islands of Pontine are some of the most secluded areas of Italy and Ventotene being car free and 2nd largest of all is an experience worth making.

The Porto Romano on the island’s northeast coast is the usual yachting spot where you can enjoy a more peaceful retreat in comparison to bustling life on Capri.  Contrast to Capri and Ischia is as big as anywhere in this region despite dark past, as it was used by Roman emperors to punish women on charges of adultery, all of which is memorised on mosaics that decorate local villas such as Julia’s at Punta Eolo.

Lying directly above Port Romano, the Piazza Castello is the epicentre of Ventotene town.  It is a textbook example of authentic Italian seaside village charm. The tiny vineyards, wild herbs and flowers, and secluded beaches and grottos make it a popular tourist destination.

Ventotene is one of the greatest scuba diving spots in Italy, and home to a diving academy too. It maybe worthwhile booking a diving excursion with the local school here? Booking a diving excursion to explore excellent scuba diving locations with underwater rock walls and ledges that drop off just a short distance from the shores can provide you with a great insight into underwater life as the sea-beds around the island is full of different species of fish. Explore the wrecks lying around the island including some treasures and marine life of the Ventotene Marine Reserve. Swimming is best off the boat or at the two local beaches near the villages of Cala Rossano and Nave. The islands have always been renowned for their mild climate and for the beauty of their surrounding sea and sea-beds which have an average depth ranging from 3 to 50 metres and a maximum depth measuring below 100 metres at a distance of over 3 miles from the coast. One other attraction are ‘’peschiera’’, or fish farms which date from Roman times. Best visited on your own yacht, Peschiera Romana is an option to visit in the afternoon.

Day 7 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island San Stefano

Morning on Island Ventotene – late morning sail to island SAN STEFANO

Dinner on board or return to Ventotene island

A short distance away is the island of San Stephano, home of a prison in the 1700’s. On this day, you may be able to explore the incredible abandoned panopticon prison, Carcere Borbonico di Santo Stefano dating from the late 18th century. Together with Ventotene, there are only a few hundred people living on these two islands (no permanent inhabitants on San Stephano), which keeps the water crystal clear and allows amazing underwater world to develop.

The islands of Ponza, Ventotene, Santo Stefano as well as the small island of Gavi and the solitary rock of la Botte are the most extraordinary group of islands in the Tyrrhenian sea. They have varying coastlines, the colours of the rocks, the attractive villages and the small ports in pure Mediterranean style. Of course a sailing charter is the only way to enjoy completely places like this…

This is ideal location to spend the whole day at anchor and away from any civilisation as setting foot on the island may not be allowed, while views of the fortress from your boat anchored directly underneath it is mesmerising. You may also wish to join a local boat tour around the island as it offers a good insight into the history of the island as well as fascinating views.

Day 8 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island Ponza

Breakfast on Ventotene

Morning at San Stefano (or Ventotene) – early morning sail to PONZA

1st Stop at PONZA

Dinner at Il Pescator

You will probably anchor at Chiaia di Luna which is recognised as one of the most beautiful beaches in ITALY. Numerous grotooes, tiny private beaches and coves can be explored independently with a tender. Known for nightlife and beach parties, it is a complete contrast to what one can find on other neighbouring islands as this is where Roman elite meets in summer.

Reaching by boat the isle shows itself with the semicircle of the rosy houses in the port, the Roman swimming pools and the fascinating sight of the tiny churchyard on the mountain. The scenery shows a wide sequence of stacks, headlands, caves, bays, points, inlets and beaches, all of incomparable beauty. The island is famed for its grotto, which were created by Etruscans. It has the Serpents Grotto and the Roman Gallery which is a Roman tunnel to connect the town of Ponza to the large beach called Chiaia di Luna on its west side. There are Egyptian, Cannanite, Greek, and Phoenician Necropoli ruins.

It has a small town named Ponza, another one named Santa Maria and a few smaller towns. Don’t miss the chance to have a trip to the wonderful ancient Roman sea caves commonly referred to as the Grotte di Pilato. The caves (four in all, connected by underwater tunnels) were hand-excavated by the Romans and used as a murenario (eel farm) in the 1st century A.D., when the emperor Augustus first built a villa on the hill above.

We suggest to circumnavigate the island to discover all of its stunning bays, like Chiaia di Luna, Capo Bianco, Cala Feola etc. At sunset, the party-goers can pay a visit to the must-go aperitif at the Frontone, which is a rustic outdoor bar set up among the trees just behind the sand. As for dinner, It’s not easy to choose among the many beautiful typical restaurants scattered along the island.

Day 9 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island Palmarola

Breakfast on Ponza

Morning on Ponza – early afternoon sail to PALMAROLA

One of the most charming places of Italy’s Pontine Archipelago, the natural reserve of Palmarola is located furthest from the main coastline and in the most western corner of Pontine archipelago. Ideal for souvenir shopping and casual hiking, it’s a ideal place to spend all night al-fresco dining in one of the local restaurants or on the deck of your catamaran. You can anchor nearby small natural harbour which is an ideal location for another swimming and snorkelling experience just off the boat. The pirate’s treasure at Cala Brigantin and a visit to “la Cattedrale”, a shoreline that has been shaped by the sea and the wind and now resembles a cathedral could be visited while sailing around the island. As with Santo Stefano, you can enjoy solitude and living in wild nature of one of the most difficult to reach points in the whole of Mediterranean.

Day 10 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island Palmarola

mega yacht a ponza

Breakfast on Palmarola

All day at Palmarola Dinner at O’Francese

Even though the second largest of Pontine islands, there are no permanent inhabitants here, other than a single guardian family during the winter. There are no specific tourist facilities either, but a couple of restaurants open in summer at Cala di Porto. An ideal night for your chef to showcase yachts culinary capabilities indeed! The northernmost island of Zannone serves as a wildlife refuge for some flora that are no longer found elsewhere in the Mediterranean.

A bathing paradise and ideal for snorkelling too, Palmarola is known for its rugged sea stacks such as this magical collapsed natural arch the rifles. Cava Mazzella is for those of the adventurous nature keen to uncover the mystique of this natural cave. Similarly, the island of Zannone has a surface of little more than 0.38 sq. miles and lies approximately 6.5 miles from the port of Ponza. It is part of the Circeo National Park and local Forestry service may organise a hiking tour along marked paths or you can simply try and get to the top of Mount Pellegrino unsupervised. You may discover lovely nature, the ruins of a Benedictine convent dating back to the XIII century and probably some wild sheep during your walk. Bird watching from your boat may also be an interesting proposal on this day. The Marquis Casati villa located here was venue for lavish debauched masked parties.

Day 11 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island Zannone

Morning Island Palmarola – Early morning sail to ZANONNE

Day 12 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island Ponza

Early morning sail to PONZA

2nd Stop at Ponza

Lunch as per groups choice or on board at anchorage

Your 2nd and 3rd day on Island of Ponza and we are certain you will be able to make plans or confirm suggestions by the captain. If not, you can explore the other part of the island on 12th August and simply enjoy the beauty of this remote location. Lots of water toys are on board and deckhand will gladly take them out for an all-day activity at one of the chosen anchorages. Hiking in the late afternoon can be a great way to shed some of the food taken during lunch and prepare yourself for an all night dinner at busy Aqua Pazza.

On this day, it may be a good idea to commission a visit by a local photographer. Creating a collage or even a video, including a drone, could be a fabulous way of memorising the meeting and keeping it as the best souvenir for reminiscing in the coming years. Let us know if you will need assistance in arranging this or if indeed you will consider it on this day or maybe on an other day and in another location.

Day 13 / Destination: Pontine Archipelago – Island Zannone

Morning Ponza – early morning sail to Ventotene/San Stefano

Dining on board

Going to mainland of the local province may be a bit too far, but revisiting some of the other locations during a 2 week charter itinerary could be planned on this day. For example, you will most certainly want to revisit some of the parts of the island or go to San Stefano or indeed explore another part which you have not visited before. Your planning and duration of charter allows for lots of flexibility and making some general plans the night before and firming them up in the morning and in discussions with the captain, is best way to go.

Some local shops may have latest or additional type of watertoys and maybe it would be a good time to visit one and see if special gear ie. kite surfing gear or eve an instructor may be rented out or hired and arranged as an experience.

Day 14 / Destination: Island Capri

Morning Island Ventotene – early morning to ISLAND CAPRI

Dinner at a local restaurant ie. DA PAOLINO

Visting Capri 2nd time, will allow you to maybe revisit your sailing skills, take helm from the captain, log the positions and feel like a captain of a superyacht? A lot has been said about possible options on Capri, and I am certain you will have planned well this day. What we can recommend is maybe a 2nd day visit of a local photographer, drone video and maybe a personal family album with printed photos to memorise the end to this hopefully amazing sailing holiday can be suggested.

Local companies may offer a helicopter tour or similar activity and maybe part of the family will consider flying back to Naples while the rest sails, allowing an additional experience for younger members or indeed for the special surprise to mum or dad?

Day 15 / Destination: Naples

Breakfast in Capri – disembarkation at Castel dell’Ovo

Morning Capri – early morning sail back to Naples

Brunch on board before disembarkation

As with all things in life, the end is nigh yet we hope it will have been a wonderful experience to this point.

Look forward to another relaxing al-fresco breakfast on deck and spend the final day of your charter with your loved ones enjoying the facilities on board, taking last few views of the passing coastline and dive into the Med before starting to pack and plan your way to the airport. It is also a good time to thank the crew for all their wonderful work which we will hope, should have been exemplary. You’ll disembark in Naples, probably the same port of your embarkation, although lastminute checks with the captain could mean disembarkation somewhere nearby where you may prefer. End your stay on board of your chosen luxury yacht with one final glass of favourite Tignanello, Deutz champagne or just a freshly squeezed orange juice. We wish you a wonderful end to the charter, relaxing trip back home and lovely end to the summer. We also look forward to read your reviews and hopefully arrange another charter shortly afterwards.

PONZA & PALMAROLA YACHT CHARTER

Ponza, the largest of the pontine islands, is full of breathtaking scenery and unmissable views. its coasts, alternating jagged beaches, and small coves to be conquered only by boat are a paradise for those aboard a luxury charter. a real gem for lovers of snorkelling and scuba diving: there are numerous underwater caves and small cliffs..

Once a prominent Roman seaport, Ponza features the remains of an imposing dam, large villas, and fish farms. Approaching the coast on a luxury charter in Ponza , the outline of the terraced farms and candy-coloured houses is clearly visible. The elegant Piazzetta, a gathering spot of the local high life, is the heart of the island.

Discover charming beaches on a luxury Ponza yacht charter

When you arrive in Ponza, the Italian phrase ‘la dolce vita’ will instantly become apparent. Highly popular with Italians and A-list celebrities seeking to keep a low profile, this idyllic island enjoys a slower pace of life that is best enjoyed in ultimate relaxation.

If you’re looking to enjoy all the frills that come with a modern Mediterranean island, you won’t find it on a Ponza yacht charter . Instead, you will be greeted by a wild, green landscape steeped in history and old-world charm.

Ponza boasts 40 kilometres of rugged coastline dotted with inlets and small bays, including the Spiaggia Di Chiaia di Luna, or Half Moon Beach, which lies close to the Roman Galleria and Sorceress’s Grotta. Spiaggia Delle Felci is one of the most popular amongst tourists, meaning it can get very busy during the summer months. That said, it is a delightful spot to spend the evening ashore, with a few bars and restaurants serving Italian plates. Or, you could beat the crowds and enjoy the talents of the onboard private chef with the beautiful backdrop of the beach.

During your Ponza yacht charter , opt for the soft sands of Sant’Antonio for a dip into transparent waters. An old Roman passage connects it to Giancos – a stone’s throw from the marina. Another tunnel dating to Roman times is the access point to the famous Chiaia di Luna, a crescent-shaped spot surrounded by cliffs of white tuff overlooking the sea. Other dazzling beaches to include on your Ponza yacht charter itinerary are Cala Cercata, Cala Cavone, Grotta del Corallo, Cala Gaetano, and Cala Felci.

Near Le Forna, Ponza yacht charter guests will find three volcanic pools carved in the tuff by wind and sea. This enchanting spot has crystal-clear waters and a rocky seabed that attracts experienced divers.

After lunch, you can head back to your Ponza yacht charter t o enjoy a chilled aperitif or a glass of Enoteca – the locally produced wine – in the shade of the hot afternoon sun.

A Palmarola yacht charter : trekking trails and enchanting views

In your Ponza yacht charter itinerary, make sure to venture to the small island of Palmarola, just 8 miles west of Ponza.

Before retreating to your Palmarola yacht charter to unwind, step ashore for some interesting trekking adventures on Mounts Guarnieri, Tramontana, and Radica in Palmarola, the third island not far from Ponza and Ventotene .

The waters near Faraglioni di Mezzogiorno house a spellbinding grotto, while the bay of La Forcina – transparent waters and sandy seabed – has boulders showing layers of stratifications and lava flows formed across the centuries.

It is, however, La Cattedrale that holds a prime place among Palmarola’s most beautiful spots to see on a Palmarola yacht charter. Here, the elements have carved basalt hollows into the coastline, forming tall narrow caves in the shape of Gothic cathedrals.

An absolute must in a Palmarola yacht charter itinerary is a stop-off for a fantastic lunch of shellfish pasta. The restaurant is seasonal, and booking is advised, as it is the only restaurant on the island that boasts a total of two buildings; the only other building on the island belongs to one of the first families of fashion, the Fendi’s.

Ponza, Ventotene, and Palmarola feature evocative sights, clear waters, and secluded bays to discover on a luxury charter in the Pontine Islands .

Insider's guide: 6 of the best Italian superyacht destinations

Capri, tyrrhenian sea.

Cinque Terre’s colourful cliffside villages may be one of the first images that come to mind when you picture a private cruise or luxury yacht charter in Italy . However, concerns that overcrowding is damaging the UNESCO World Heritage Site in recent years is enough to encourage visitors to opt for alternative destinations.

Thankfully Italy's exquisite coastline has many other beauty spots and these six have been singled out by experienced superyacht owners who never tire of visiting them time after time.

1. Capri, Tyrrhenian Sea

Recommended by Peter de Savary, Gloria

This iconic island has been a favourite since ancient times. When the Romans were building their villas here 2,000 years ago, they discovered the ruins of even older civilisations. Today, you can still visit the remains of Tiberius’s palaces. The Marina Grande on the north coast offers berths up to 60 metres, but the more attractive option is the anchorage at Marina Piccola on the south coast.

This broad bay is guarded by three tall stack rocks and curving cliffs, with the small village clinging to the rocks. From here you are just a short drive on switchback roads to the diversions of Anacapri or Capri town. And make sure to dine at one of the many restaurants perched vertiginously on the rock face.

Panarea, Aeolian Islands, Tyrrhenian Sea

Recommended by Captain Magic, Sea Force One

Panarea may be the second-smallest of the Aeolian Islands, but it has the most dramatic geological formations that produce gorgeous coves and breathtaking scenery. The volcano here is inactive (unlike nearby Stromboli), but geothermal activity still provides hot springs near Punta di Peppe e Maria.

There are fewer than 300 full-time residents, but numbers swell when the summer sun brings fashionable visitors in search of elegant dining with spectacular views. And, although Panarea is off the beaten track, there is plenty of nightlife – with its luxurious and exclusive ambiance, it’s not uncommon for the island to seem the private preserve of superyacht owners.

Zimmari (also known as Baia Milazzese) provides a great secure anchorage; the sea is wonderfully clear, and there are good opportunities for diving and snorkelling over wrecks and volcanic rock formations.

Isola di Ponza, Pontine Islands, Tyrrhenian Sea

Recommended by the owners of Twizzle

Ponza has been called one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean , and the owners of Twizzle agree that it is ‘a ridiculously romantic and authentic Italian island that makes you feel that a young Sophia Loren might just walk past at any moment.

The Italian elite head here to their private villas in the summer to revel in the clean turquoise water, natural rocky grottos, hidden coves and fishing ports. Chiaia di Luna beach (which used to be the most popular on the island), with its towering chalky cliffs and azure sea, can now only be approached by sea since it was closed following deadly rock falls. Isola di Ponza pulls off the trick of appearing unspoilt, yet the nightlife is lively and there’s plenty going on.

Excellent seafood restaurants such as Gennarino a Mare dot the island. You can moor at the restaurant’s own dock and then dine on decking that extends right out over the sea.

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Recommended by Joseph Vittoria, former owner of  M5  (then Mirabella V)

Since the 1950s, people have flocked to this fishing village turned tourist hotspot to enjoy the restaurants and bars that adorn this glorious coastline. Of course, the best views of Positano are seen from the deck of a yacht anchored in the bay below: one of Joseph Vittoria’s abiding memories is ‘watching the city lights come on as the sun sets.

Whether you’re dining in Michelin-starred luxury or in a streetside café, look out for regional delicacies such as spaghetti with clams cooked with local extra virgin olive oil; fried anchovies tossed in mint, vinegar and garlic; and peppered mussels. For dessert, try a ‘babarese’ filled with cream and wild strawberries. If you need to work off any over-indulgence, you can visit the nearby Li Galli Islands, a protected marine reserve that offers great snorkelling and swimming.

Porto Cervo, Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

Recommended by the owner of Farewell

Sardinia's north-eastern ‘emerald’ coast is still one of the most popular superyacht destinations in the Mediterranean. It’'s easy and quick to get to from mainland Europe and yet is off the mass tourism circuit – instead, it has been an exclusive enclave for half a century.

The entire 55 kilometre coastline was bought by a consortium led by HH the Aga Khan in 1961, and development has been controlled to produce a top-class destination among the fishing villages and coves. Sailors love the Costa Smeralda because of the wind, while everyone loves the beautiful coastline and appreciates the excellent onshore facilities.

Porto Cervo Marina lies in a well-protected harbour, and there are excellent hotels, restaurants and world-class shopping close by. The social whirl consists of regattas such as the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta , polo matches, film festivals and vintage car rallies. More pragmatically, there are good yacht repair facilities, and private jet and helicopter access at Olbia.

If you fancy visiting Porto Cervo discover more about seven days on a superyacht in Sardinia .

This city in the sea has fascinated seafarers for centuries, and in Captain Magic’'s opinion, it is ‘the most beautiful city in the Mediterranean’. The Venice Yacht Pier offers a limited number of berths in the city (with a maximum draught of 5.5 to 9 metres), just a short walk from St Mark’s Square.

Otherwise, there are marinas offering deeper dockage just 10 kilometres away within the lagoon. From here you can explore more than 1,000 years of history among jaw-dropping architecture that attracts 20 million visitors each year. From June to September tourists swelter in the city (the world’s oldest film festival takes place in July/August), and February offers 10 days of Carnival. But the best way of experiencing this aquatic gem is by boat – to follow in Marco Polo’s wake and sail into Venice’s lagoon on your own vessel has to be one of the most romantic experiences you could ever have.

Tuscany – Porto Viareggio

mega yacht a ponza

Already home to one of the most important Carnival celebrations in Italy, this seaside resort will also soon be home to the inaugural Versilia Yachting Rendez-vous in May, 2017. As the southernmost point in Versilia, Viareggio was the only outlet onto the Lucca Sea for centuries, and now offers restaurants, nightlife and architecture to match. Porto Viareggio has space for 560 boats up to 70 feet in length in over 500,000 square feet of water, so there’s plenty of room to spare for visitors to this new international event dedicated to high-end products of Italy’s famed nautical industry.

Anguilla – Altamer

mega yacht a ponza

Anguilla’s Altamer resort in Shoal Bay West is home to three spectacular beachside villas and considered by many to be the Caribbean’s finest address. The resort will receive the island’s first megayacht marina with 30 percent of its berths designed to accept yachts stretching between 30 feet and 200 feet. The new facility is slated to include a 164-unit resort, in addition to duty-free retail shops and a restaurant promenade.

St. Kitts – Christophe Harbour

mega yacht a ponza

Created by the developer of Kiawah Island, Charles Pinckney “Buddy” Darby III, The Marina at Christophe Harbour was built with the discerning yachtsman in mind, featuring 250 state-of-the-art berths – 50 of which will be able to accommodate the yachts up to 250 feet. A protected entrance, safe inner harbor and a prime location between Antigua and St. Maarten in the heart of the Eastern Caribbean charter and cruising grounds make Christophe Harbour a prime destination marina.

mega yacht a ponza

Rome – Roma Marina Yachting

mega yacht a ponza

The arrival of Roma Marina Yachting in October 2015 transformed this historic port into one of the world’s most captivating megayacht destinations near a city that has witnessed 20 centuries of history. From Roma Marina Yachting, guests can reach the pearls of the Mediterranean, including Capri, Procida and Ischia Ponza, and the further off islands of Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily. The yachting set can also adventure on dry land – in less than an hour they can be in Rome, or amongst the Etruscan ruins in the beautiful, ancient region of Tuscia.

So when you are planning your next megayacht seafaring adventure, be sure to consider these incredible marinas. Whether your travels take you to the shimmering shores of Dubai or the splendid, historic Mediterranean, these are some of the most beautiful places to dock your spectacular vessel. At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motorboat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Ponza

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Ponza below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in [location name] it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailboat: From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced captain.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a captain who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a captain who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Captained Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat rental or yacht charter in Ponza you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht rental or captained yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without a captain depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat rental.

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Ponza

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Ponza. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Ponza, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

pershing 115 yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/122005/fea_pershing_525x350.jpg

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

  • By Yachting Staff
  • January 9, 2024

Lürssen Lady Lara

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

Lürssen Lady Lara

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

Lürssen Lady Lara

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

Lürssen Lady Lara

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.

Billionaire fights to dock his boat on water behind his house. His 164-foot boat, that is.

The love of the water, and a mega-yacht to enjoy it, is putting one resident at odds with village of north palm beach leaders..

mega yacht a ponza

For some people, the ultimate Florida lifestyle is a waterfront house , a private dock and a boat parked next to it. But what if that boat is a mega-yacht , and the mega-yacht stretches 164 feet?

That's the conundrum facing the Village of North Palm Beach.

This tiny community in northern Palm Beach County, with only 13,000 full-time residents, has an identity so tied to the water that a ship's steering wheel is the village's emblem.

But it's that love of the water that is putting one resident at odds with village leaders.

For the past several years, homeowner Michael Bozutto has been battling the village for the right to park his 164-foot Westport, dubbed Honey, behind a home he owns at 932 Shore Drive.

The house, built in 1961, is a one-story, ranch-style property with three bedrooms on a half-acre lot. Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house in 2014, according to Palm Beach County property records.

Lawsuit rooted in dispute over where to dock mega-yacht

What makes this plain house special is its location. It's on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Bozzuto's motor yacht.

Since Bozutto bought Honey for an undisclosed sum a decade ago, he mostly has parked it at the Old Port Cove Marina, near Tiger Woods' 155-foot showy mega-yacht, ironically dubbed Privacy.

More recently, Bozzuto has wanted to park Honey alongside his Shore Drive house, one of four houses he owns in the village. While Bozzuto keeps some personal property at the Shore Drive house, he lives at a house he owns at Harbour Isles Court.

Village officials warned Bozzuto he can't park Honey at 932 Shore Drive because boats can only be parked on docks behind houses that are occupied by the homeowner.

But village rules do not define the word "occupied." For instance, the rules do not state that occupied means the house is a residence where the owner lives. Village rules also contain no restrictions on the size of boats that can be kept at private docks.

After years of pushing back against what he believes are fuzzy rules, Bozzuto in March filed a lawsuit against the village.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

He alleged the municipality is illegally depriving him of his property rights because nothing in the village code prevents him from mooring Honey at his house. He is asking a Palm Beach County Circuit Court judge to rule that he has a constitutional right to dock Honey there.

Gregory Coleman, Bozzuto's West Palm Beach attorney, said the village has plenty of waterfront homes with yachts parked behind them. But Coleman said the village is illegally blocking Bozzuto from docking Honey at his house because the village is bending to pressure from a handful of neighbors who think the boat is too big.

The selective enforcement is wrong, said Coleman, a former president of the Florida Bar.

"He's a very under-the-radar guy who doesn't cause anybody any problems," Coleman said of Bozzuto. "He pays his property taxes, and he wants to be left alone by the village of North Palm Beach. Unfortunately, they are singling Mike out."

Neither Leonard Rubin, the village's longtime attorney, nor Village Manager Chuck Huff responded to requests for comment.

Eric Stettin, a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney who is representing the village in the Bozzuto lawsuit, said he could not comment on pending litigation.

What good is a man's castle if he can't have a boat in his moat?

Coleman's lawsuit describes the conflict as a battle over property rights, but real estate and yachting experts say it's also a sign of the times.

As wealthy new residents pour into the county wanting all the perks of the Sunshine State, they want a boat to go along with their waterfront homes and golf club memberships. Some longtime residents fear Palm Beach County is turning into a playground for billionaires, to the detriment of everyday people who also want to live in sunshine and peace.

This conflict between Old Florida and new money is an ever-present tension, but even seasoned yacht brokers say they've never seen interest in luxury yachts quite as strong as it is now.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

"What we've seen in the marketplace right after COVID in the yachting industry, and especially the superyacht segment, is the most incredible growth ever seen in the history of yachting to date," said Shannon McCoy, a luxury yacht advisor and broker with Worth Avenue Yachts in Palm Beach.

"A lot of people are moving here with serious money," added Pascal Savoy, U.S. managing director of Camper & Nicholsons International yacht brokers in Fort Lauderdale.

While in the past Palm Beach County was not considered lively enough for some buyers, Savoy said the county's growing sophistication is putting it on the map in a way never seen before.

"It's a mini-Monaco for us," Savoy said.

Prices for mega-yachts can range from $18 million to $60 million, or many times that, for the largest and most decked-out mega-yachts, Savoy said.

While some yachts can be glitzy, a 164-foot Westport is considered a more low-profile boat, Savoy added.

Michael Bozzuto's interests: Houses, boats and philanthropy

Bozzuto is no newcomer to North Palm Beach. He's been a resident of the village for 20 years.

He is the billionaire owner of a family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut, and an investor and philanthropist who likes to collect houses and yachts, Coleman said.

In addition to the four North Palm Beach houses and several yachts he owns, Bozzuto in February paid a whopping $31.1 million for a house in the Town of Palm Beach Shores. The house, which has two docks, sits just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet.

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

Coleman said there is plenty of room for other boaters to navigate the waterway when Honey is parked at the Shore Drive house in North Palm Beach. And while other people may not have as large a yacht, there are other sizeable yachts parked on docks behind other North Palm Beach homes, too, he added.

At a 2017 village council meeting, then-Mayor Darryl Aubrey commented on the issue, according to the complaint.

"When I didn't live here full time, I had a boat sitting in my dock, I was gone nine months of the year. I don't see how you can say that someone has to be in a residence year-round, seems to be some interpretation of occupant, there would be an enormous number of violations," Aubrey said.

Another member of the village council asked if the village had a definition now, the complaint said.

Rubin, the village attorney, replied: "No, we don't," according to the lawsuit.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

Palm Beach County's waterways run deep, and they are popular

The yacht docking dispute is particularly timely, given the scarcity of dock space for boats of all sizes.

The most convenient place to park a boat is on the water behind a house, brokers say. But not every waterway or channel can accommodate the draft, or depth, of a mega-yacht.

However, the dock behind Bozzuto's Shore Drive house can.

Not only is the Westport not known for its deep hulls, but the waterway also is typical of northern Palm Beach County, which boasts deep water and easy access to the ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet, said Coleman, a lifelong boater.

"In Palm Beach County, they have deeper water, and it allows people to have larger yachts," Savoy agreed.

But not every waterway is deep enough for every boat.

McCoy said she specializes in helping advise potential yacht owners about the county's varied water depths before they buy a house, if they plan to dock their yacht behind it.

If yacht owners don't have a private dock, the other option is a marina. But marina space is hard to find, with many dock berths reserved for months in advance, McCoy said.

Despite the challenges of owning a boat and finding a place to dock it, yacht brokers say demand continues.

They see interest continuing from business executives moving here with their families as they relocate their companies to Palm Beach County. There's also a growing demand for yachts among female buyers, McCoy added.

They also see younger mega-yacht buyers, some even in their early 30s. This is in sharp contrast to the mostly older buyers in the past, Savoy said.

Palm Beach County may not be as go-go as Miami-Dade County when it comes to showy ships, but if interest continues, "it's coming," Savoy said. "You're going to attract bigger yachts."

Put another way: "No one needs a boat, but everyone needs a boat," McCoy said. "It's the ultimate lifestyle."
