New boat categories in the spotlight

Each year, the Best of Boats Award recognizes the best powerboats across several categories. This year, in addition to the categories for beginners, family, fun and travel , there is a new category for electric and hybrid boats. The new Performance category features particularly fast and luxurious units.

Tests and selections based on the program

Over a period of 12 months, the 14 members of the jury, including your Nautical Magazine, carried out trials to select the new boats that would be contenders for the title. As a reminder, the principle of the BOB - Best of Boats Awards - is to classify boats by program and not by length, as is the case with other competitions. Another feature is that boats must be tested by several members of the jury to be included in the final selection.

Over 100 boats tested

Over 100 boats were tested during the year, between August 2022 and August 2023. The selection reflects the full range of powerboats on the market, including new brands such as Sterk, Sialia, with a 17 m-long electric boat concept, and the new Brunswick Group brand, Navan by Quicksilver, launched in 2023.

Among the manufacturers, France, Poland and Finland are well represented.

2023 Motor Boat Awards winners: Best motorboats of the year revealed

Motorboat & Yachting:

“It has taken months of testing, weeks of analysing and days of deliberating amongst our judges but the 2023 Motor Boat Awards winners can now be revealed….

As always, we have chosen a winner in each of our ten categories based on how well the boat performed during our rigorous sea trials but also how well it meets the requirements of its target market in relation to its size, style and price.

Sportsboats up to 30ft – Winner – Quarken 27 T-Top

Quarken’s 27 T-Top is an object lesson in practical dayboat design. Proudly built in Finland, it uses a single Yamaha F300  outboard motor  for a 43-knot top end and cruising efficiency only a shade over 1.5 litres per nautical mile.

It’s fun to drive, with a novice-friendly hull and an effective helm position with direct access to a ‘skipper’s cleat’ for single-handed work. And it looks cool too, with its sleek stepped hull, flared bow and contrasting tinted panels.

There’s also masses of storage on board and all of it is useable, thanks to sensible proportions, proper linings, dual access points and quick-lift one-handed cushions. But it’s the ease of movement that really hits home.

Even if you reverse the helm seats to integrate with the diners at the aft bench, you can still pass them freely on the starboard side. And when you reach the bow, whether the forward seats are rigged for dining or sunbathing, the step-through forepeak with offset anchor means you can still disembark without obstruction.

There’s no wet bar and the heads is an open-plan affair but if you want a proper open dayboat with a serviceable cuddy at a sensible price, this is a superb debut from Quarken.”

ECM won the Software category for its PrintStator Motor CAD platform. The Boston-based company’s CEO, Brian Casey , will accept the award at a ceremony in Chicago, May 6.

Automate Innovation Awards and Show

Hosted by the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), the Automate Innovation Awards celebrate technologies pushing boundaries in the field of industrial automation. An independent judging panel selected winners based on measurable impact in increasing system efficiencies, reducing costs, and improving design quality.

The Automate Innovation Awards coincide with Automate 2024—North America’s largest automation and robotics tradeshow, held this year in Chicago May 6-9.

At Automate 2024, ECM will host an exhibit and ECM CEO Brian Casey will attend the May 6 Automate Innovation Awards ceremony and deliver an Automate Innovation Stage presentation on PrintStator PCB Stator electric motor design May 7.

“ECM is honored to receive this Automate Innovation Awards recognition for our PrintStator Motor CAD platform. Advancing 21st century automation will require a nextgen upgrade to electric motor design and manufacturing. As SaaS, PrintStator puts that at the fingertips of any innovator in robotics, consumer electronics, conveyors – you name it,” said ECM CEO Brian Casey.

Motor as Software

As a company, ECM pairs PrintStator Motor CAD to patented PCB Stator innovation to create next generation electric machines that are smaller, quieter, and more energy and space efficient. In January 2024, ECM launched PrintStator as public software-as-a-service (SaaS) product at CES.

As an innovation tool, PrintStator fundamentally transforms the way electric motors are designed and manufactured. From the cloud-based interface, users can dial-in precise performance and dimensional specs to create optimized motor solutions for multiple verticals: Consumer Electronics, HVAC, E-Mobility, Medical, Robotics, Aerospace, and more.

“PrintStator offers innovators unparalleled design optimization. For example, if a global conveyor manufacturer needs a 1.05 kW electric motor that achieves 94% efficiency, conforms to an exact form factor, and complies with regional energy performance requirements PrintStator can design that,” said ECM CEO Brian Casey.

ECM’s PrintStator is also an advanced design-to-manufacture tool. As a SaaS offering, the Motor CAD platform allows companies with manufacturing capacity to advance designs immediately to production. PrintStator users without manufacturing capability can leverage the global capacity of the printed-circuit board industry to enable rapid production of optimized electric motors.

“With PrintStator, ECM aims to positively disrupt an electric motor space that hasn’t seen transformative innovation for eons. PrintStator enables any innovator in any sector to become a designer and producer of optimized electric motors for any application,” said ECM CEO Brian Casey.

Scalability and Sustainability

In addition to delivering performance and cost advantages to electrically powered industries, PrintStator offers significant benefits to energy sustainability.

Research underscores that conventional electric motor systems account for over 50% of global electricity consumption and require substantial raw materials to produce. The US and EU project that converting to next generation electric motor technology could eliminate over 100 million tons of CO2 emissions and save over $30 billion in energy costs.

PCB Stator motors designed via PrintStator are up to 70% lighter than conventional options, while achieving efficiencies in excess of 90% and requiring 80% less raw materials (namely, copper).

ECM is working with several global manufacturing companies to incorporate PrintStator, PCB Stator solutions into commercial and industrial devices compliant with Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPs) .

Award Winning IP

PrintStator and ECM’s integrated PCB Stator technology have earned 12 US patents. This list has grown (and will continue to grow) based on persistent R&D and upgrades shaped by PrintStator user input worldwide.

ECM has structured PrintStator for constant product improvement via a PrintStator user-group program. Member feedback funnels into consistent updates of the Motor CAD platform to propel the global adoption and evolution of PrintStator as a disruptive technology.

ECM’s Automate Innovation Awards distinction adds to a tally of recent technology competition accolades. The company’s PCB Stator electric motor solutions and software have earned 14 award distinctions. ECM was announced a 2024 CES Innovation Awards Honoree and a winner in the 2023 Industrial Design, Engineering & Automation (IDEA) Awards for PrintStator. ECM took top honors in The 2023 SaaS Awards for PrintStator—winning four categories (including Bespoke SaaS Solution of The Year). In October, ECM won the Design World LEAP Awards’ Software category. ECM also earned an Electronic Design Power Best Award for its CAD Customizable, Unum Potentia, Electric Motor Controller that enables IE5 efficiency

Infinite Use Cases

PrintStator has been leveraged to integrate ECM’s advanced PCB Stator electric motor technology into numerous applications. That includes collaborating with partners to design smaller, lighter, and more efficient electric motors for consumer appliances, robotics, aerospace, e-bicycles, medical tools, and haptic devices.

ECM believes the release of its advanced MotorCAD platform as SaaS will serve accelerating demand for optimized PCB Stator machines.

“The need for specialized electric motors is an overlooked technology trend. The world will require billions of specialized motors annually—in every vertical imaginable—designed to precise performance, efficiency, and size. In ECM’s view, the best way to serve that electric motor future is to offer PrintStator Motor CAD to the public as SaaS,” said ECM CEO Brian Casey.

ECM PCB Stator Tech uses advanced Motor CAD and patented PCB Stator—printed circuit board—technology to create next generation electric motors for multiple applications. ECM’s award-winning PrintStator software powers the design, manufacture, and integration of PCB Stator motors that are lighter, quieter, and more energy and space efficient across a broad range of use cases. ECM designed motors achieve efficiencies in excess of 90% while requiring up to 70% less raw materials to produce.

ECM has collaborated with multiple organizations to create optimized motor solutions across a variety of verticals: HVAC, Consumer Electronics, E-Mobility, Fitness, Medical, Robotics, Renewable Energy, Aerospace, Defense, and more.

ECM’s design partners include aerospace and defense innovator L3 Harris , global electronics manufacturer Celestica , and consumer electronics startup Nodo Film Systems .

ECM is a 2024 CES Innovation Awards Honoree and winner of four International SaaS Awards —including SaaS Solution of The Year, Best SaaS Product For CSR, Sustainability And ESG, and Best SaaS Product For Engineering Management, PLM Or CAD. ECM’s PrintStator software is also a Machine Design IDEA Awards and Design World LEAP Awards winner.

ECM maintains offices in Boston (MA), Bozeman (MT), and two locations in Europe .

39m Burger motor yacht Areti I joins the market for first time

The 38.5-metre Burger motor yacht Areti I has been listed for sale for the first time with David Ross of Hamilton Marine .

One of only two built in 2007 by Burger, who David Ross described as the "Rolls Royce of US yacht builders", the full displacement, all-aluminium yacht has had one owner since new and has never been chartered.

Exterior design and naval architecture is by Don O'Keeffe , a long-time Burger designer, while the interior is by Douglas Richey . She was refitted in 2024 having always been impeccably maintained, mainly at Rybovich in North Palm Beach, USA, who fully repainted her in 2022.

Accommodation, including a full-beam, main deck owner's cabin with two bathrooms, is for an owner's party of 10. Two double and two twin cabins are located on the lower deck, all fine examples of Burger craftsmanship. There are quarters for up to eight crew members in five cabins forward.

Rich cabinetry is featured in Areti I's open-plan main saloon and dining room and also up in the skylounge. A 200-bottle Eurocave wine cellar and Yamaha Clavinova digital piano are two appealing features. The aft deck offers al fresco dining, as does the sundeck, where guests can also enjoy a circular hot tub and sit-up bar. Tenders are stowed aft on the bridge deck when underway. Meanwhile, stabilisers make for easy launch and retrieval as well as embarkation at the swim platform.

The 334GT, ABS-classed, MCA-compliant yacht for sale is powered by twin 1,300hp Caterpillar engines giving her a maximum speed of 14.5 knots, a "high" cruising speed of 13.5 knots and a range of 5,500 nautical miles at 10 knots.

Lying in Florida, USA, Areti I is asking $9,950,000.

Michigan employers, local partners spotlight Gov. Whitmer’s budget recommendations and benefits for Going PRO Talent Fund

April 25, 2024

LANSING, Mich.  — The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) partnered with Oakland County Michigan Works! and joined local community members, business leaders and stakeholders to discuss Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s FY25 budget recommendations for the Going PRO Talent Fund. The roundtable event, which was held Tuesday at Oakland Community College’s Auburn Hills campus, focused on how Michigan workers and businesses benefit from the grant awards that support short-term training to help Michiganders secure and retain economic self-sufficiency.

"I am thrilled to join the local partners and employers who shared their thoughts and stories about how critical investments like the Going PRO talent Fund are helping them,” said LEO Director Susan Corbin . “Through our programs, services and partners, we support a constantly changing and dynamic workforce system in Michigan, with a focus on worker training, supports for career-based education, job preparedness and connecting people to employment services.”

In February, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released her sixth executive budget recommendation  that will lower costs, power economic development, and build a brighter future to ensure any person or business can “make it” in Michigan. The proposed budget includes an additional one-time investment of $20 million for Going PRO Talent Fund that will help more Michigan businesses support more Michigan workers with short-term training that fills a demonstrated talent need expressed by employers.

“Innovative programs like Going PRO Talent Fund have helped Michigan become a national leader when it comes to workforce development,” said Stephanie Beckhorn, director of LEO’s Office of Employment and Training . “Governor Whitmer’s proposed additional $20 million investment in Going PRO Talent Fund is an investment in Michigan businesses, workers and their families.”

Training provided through the Going PRO Talent Fund expands and improves employees’ skills and develops their opportunities for growth or promotion within the company and for economic advancement. It also helps ensure Michigan’s employers have the talent they need to compete and grow by reskilling and upskilling workers based on the employers’ needs.

Jennifer Llewellyn , Director of Oakland County Michigan Works!, moderated the panel discussion which, in addition to Corbin and Beckhorn, also included Shawn Guiterrez , President of AtomTech; Eleya Montroy , Manager of Clinical Care Services at Henry Ford Health; and Paul Myles , Senior Manager of Government Workforce Development and Training Programs at Magna International. All three organizations are past grant recipients and shared their thoughts about how the Going PRO Talent Fund has played a valuable role in their workforce development efforts.

“For us and for our employees, the Going PRO Talent Fund is a no-brainer,” said Paul Myles of Magna International. “As a retention piece, it makes a difference. For the employees, they’re so proud to go home and show what they’ve accomplished to their families. And they work with more confidence when they come to work, because they know they have the knowledge to be successful.”

Since its inception in 2014, the Going PRO Talent Fund has helped more than 7,100 Michigan businesses train approximately 175,000 workers. As a result of their training, these workers, on average, see an increase of 9% in their hourly wages six months after completion.

The Going PRO Talent Fund is crucial to not only growing Michigan’s talent pool but also meeting the direct needs of employers. Grant awards support employers in training, developing and retaining current and newly hired employees. All training results in a credential, certificate or degree.

The results are based on nominations received from the public and this year we are delighted to report that we received more nominations than ever before, suggesting standards are rising across the board and customers are returning the favour by letting us know about it.

The Motor Boat Awards judges have read through all of these nominations, assessing not just the number of commendations received but also the examples of service given.

The winner will be revealed during a virtual ceremony on the evening of Tuesday 25 January streamed live right here on mby.com

Here are the five businesses that made it through and an example of the comments made about them by their customers:
