Farther beyond

The name PLVS VLTRA, meaning ‘farther beyond’ in Latin, crystallises the owner’s uncompromising quest for perfection. At the ancient Pillars of Hercules near the Straits of Gibraltar, it is said that nec plus ultra (‘nothing farther beyond’) marked the gates of the known world. For those with exceptional daring, ambition and talent, voyaging beyond the gates – plus ultra – became a motto for unsurpassed achievement at the very highest level. PLVS VLTRA is just such an achievement.

Who Owns Superyachts In 2023 —And What Does That Mean For You As Crew?

Where once oligarchs, oil tycoons, royals and old money ruled the roost in the yachting world, tech billionaires have increasingly dominated the superyacht market. Who are these people — and more importantly — what does their different style of ‘yachting’ mean for you as crew?

plus ultra yacht owner

The list of tech billionaires (at least, the list we know of) is long and getting longer by the year. And as their wealth grows, so does the size of the boats they own!

Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison (Musashi), Charles Simonyi (SKAT), Sergey Brin (Dragonfly), and Larry Page (Senses) are just some of the tech billionaires known to own a superyacht. Mark Zuckerberg, meanwhile, is rumoured to own Andromeda.

While we can only speculate on how these exact individuals use their yachts or what they are like onboard, some general traits might set the tech billionaire yacht owner out as using their yachts differently than generations of yacht owners before them.

Overall, tech billionaires are often younger, more adventurous and less hidebound regarding old rules and service styles. Here are a few general trends we can assume.

They want to eat well, but less fussily, and with a greater premium on health.

plus ultra yacht owner

Where silver service, ultra-decadent meals, and mountains of wasted food were — and often still are— preferred by old-money yacht owners and charterers, the modern tech billionaire is more likely to be health-conscious and eat food that is plated rather than buffet style or silver service. Yacht chefs now need to be more skilled in special diets, such as plant-based or keto, and offer a broader range of cuisines.

They want to WORK.

Superyachts used to be for holidays only. This was partly by necessity —the lack of connectivity meant that work went on the back burner for summer months as guests swanned around the Mediterranean. Now, the extraordinary technological strides on board allow yacht owners to have offices where they can work anywhere in the world.

They want to go far beyond the milk run.

plus ultra yacht owner

While anchoring off St Tropez or Cap Ferrat for weeks in August will always be in style, there has been an explosion in remote cruising, often fuelled by this younger, more adventurous set of yacht owners who can work from anywhere- Antarctica to Alaska and beyond.

This has fed into the next point…

A desire for adventure and exploration has changed yacht design.

As younger, more adventurous owners like tech billionaires have joined the superyacht market, the design of yachts and the toys they carry have changed markedly. New types of vessels have been created to meet this desire for off-the-beaten-track cruising, from support yachts to water toys to the massive growth in explorer yachts. Gone are the days when one yacht layout was almost identical to another. Now, we have winter gardens, submarines, ice rooms, ski rooms, large onboard offices, and helicopter hangars.

Not all of these changes have been driven by tech billionaires, granted. Still, their vision of what is possible has dramatically changed what yachts look like and how they operate as machines, with new types of propulsion, greater ranges, and a considerable amount more tech onboard.

Some things never change.

One thing hasn’t changed, though—a wealthy person’s desire for privacy. Discretion remains perhaps the most essential trait in any crew member, which you must keep in mind when working on yachts —even in the day of constant social media and shows like Below Deck.

A wealthy person’s desire for privacy and discretion is a constant that crew forget at their peril. Are you ensuring that you are a trusted asset? You may have signed that NDA, but do you let stories slip now and then at the bar? Are you careful about not taking photos onboard that give away anything about the boat or the owners? Do you make sure you don’t share the yacht’s cruising plans?

In a world where stories about tech billionaires will fly around the globe at light speed, you must be the gatekeeper. Stories cannot leave the passerelle.

50-metre-motor-yacht-trending

On board with Paul and Maureen Petracca, owners of 49m superyacht Trending

After racking up 40 charters, the Petraccas decided it was time to buy their own boat – and all that experience informed one far-reaching refit, as they tell Tristan Rutherford...

The moment that Maureen and Paul Petracca knew they wanted to own their yacht came after 40 successful charters.“On our last trip the captain was the worst we’ve ever had,” says Maureen. “He even stranded our son and his fiancée on a tiny island off St Barths . Genuinely no one knew where they were.” After four hours playing Robinson Crusoe, the young couple were lucky to hitch a ride with a passing boat back to the Petracca family’s charter. “For the amount you pay for a week aboard, you want the charter experience to be perfect,” continues Maureen. “At that point Paul and I looked at each other and said: ‘We need to take control of this ourselves. Let’s buy a yacht of our own!’”

The result is Trending . “After 20 years of chartering several times per year we knew what we wanted,” says Paul. The twin-angled brief called for a shallow draught for cruising the Bahamas, the Petraccas’ nearest fly-in, kick-back island chain, plus a maximum length of 50 metres “because above that some ports need a pilot, and there are other regulations and entanglements”, says Paul. The equation delivered seven or eight possible yachts, leaving two 50 metre Westport 164s in contention. One became the perfect blank canvas for an ambitious overhaul into an understated and luxurious six-cabin superyacht that cruises across the Atlantic at up to 20 knots.

She’s certainly a step up from Maureen and Paul’s first foray on to the water. “We both grew up as lake people,” explains Paul. “Each of us had a summer house, and mine came with an aluminium boat with a nine horsepower engine.” As powerboats were a rarity, the family runabout was used to the full for fishing and racing. Maureen’s family was based on a lake on Cape Cod. “Our first boat was fibreglass with a six horsepower engine out back, and we graduated to a 5.8 metre on which we learned to waterski.” When married, the couple jointly purchased a 9.7 metre Edgewater. “We still use it to hop over to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard,” says Maureen.

From their Massachusetts home, the Petraccas’ career and vacation horizons broadened. Paul is now the chief investment officer at Pemco Management, which focuses on public equity investments, primarily in the technology and healthcare spaces. Maureen oversaw a far more important project: the annual yachting trips for their three children and family friends. After dozens of charters from the likes of Camper & Nicholsons , Fraser and IYC , the Petraccas knew precisely what they wanted from a week in the Mediterranean or Caribbean. “By the end of our charter life we started bringing our own specialised fishing gear,” she explains. “We sometimes brought our own divemaster. Once we even shipped in our own tender.”

Undersea exploration would play a pivotal part in the Petraccas’ charter adventures from 1996 to 2015. The entire family are PADI certified divers. The 700 islands of the Bahamas particularly appealed, not least the Exumas. Croatia also delighted the Petraccas a few years back with its countless wreck dives. It was Dubrovnik that entranced Maureen. “We toured the medieval walls and UNESCO-protected Old Town, which were beautiful.”

Before the Petraccas’ own Westport could set sail for Europe there was work to be done. “Our purchase was a 1980s throwback,” recalls Maureen. It contained thick rugs, and heavily upholstered furniture littered the voluminous interior. The vessel, formerly called Vango , had been owned by a retired couple who used it infrequently, “which was great because she had very low engine hours”, says Paul. It was Maureen who oversaw the interiors as part of an all-encompassing refit from 2015 to 2016.

Light marble and white stone were laid across the main saloon. Oversized windows pour light on to the chrome, taupes, mirrors and creams. Rainforest showers and double sinks grace every en suite. A hint of individuality is provided by Maureen’s underwater photography portraits from as far afield as St Barths, Barbuda and Saba, the Dutch Caribbean island that contains the Netherlands’ highest peak. “Our experience from 40 charters has been distilled into this space,” says Maureen. Most importantly, the finish isn’t regally stiff but royally comfortable, with sky blue fabrics and enough crystal glasses to decant the entire Napa Valley.

Stepping aboard, it’s clear why they purchased a Westport over any other yacht. “Quite simply, we knew we could modify the hell out of it,” says Paul. A bridge extension has been constructed behind the tri-deck’s upper saloon, creating an additional raised dining area for all 12 guests. “The view is great, but the privacy is priceless,” says Maureen. “As Trending is sometimes tied up in a Mediterranean port you get people promenading past.” And who wants them watching you having dinner? An illuminated bar sparkles in the night sky, as a sound system rocks the extra club area installed on the Portuguese deck just in front of the bridge. “We’re a little afraid of the sun these days so sails shade the top by day.” A therapeutic Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spa with shaded lounging areas was added too. “I prefer pools that can accommodate many guests,” says Maureen. Hers can welcome eight.

Westport, based in Washington State, comes with five decades of North Pacific experience. “The company is up to hull No 15 or 16 for our largest model, the W164,” says Paul. “So most issues would have been resolved, which allowed us to incorporate those improvements in our yacht. We also knew we could get any spare parts as we’re based in the US.” Ultimately, the refit cost $5 million. “One name we thought of for the yacht was Legacy Killer, as it was just so appropriate,” he laughs. “This yacht keeps me coming to work and earning my keep.”

The electronics on board were a focus of Paul’s. “As guests aboard our own yacht we want to share videos from our iPhones directly on to all the screens,” he says. “I believe charter clients want to do the same.” His flotilla of toys, meanwhile, is truly enviable. There are Seabobs for speed snorkelling and glass-bottomed kayaks for slow drifts across virgin reefs. “When we bought the two RIBs I asked: what’s the biggest our crane can lift?” The result is four metre and 5.5 metre Novurania tenders, the latter with 120hp out back for fishing, diving, island picnics or secret beach retreats. Paul’s desire for perfection is ever present. “I’m a maintenance freak who wants every toy to work all of the time, for our sake and everyone else’s.”

The flotilla flagship is a 11.3 metre Boston Whaler. “Our son Christopher is a qualified captain in his own right so it’s his chance to drive,” says Maureen. The Petracca family uses it for sunset cruises, but only after speed records have been smashed via its triple 350hp outboards. The boat has “all the creature comforts” including electric shades, a barbecue, night vision equipment and an air- conditioned front cabin. Guests are welcome to invite Trending’s PADI instructor along for the ride. The Petraccas frequently use the boat for their latest craze – kitesurfing – which is best practised on the mirror-calm, searing-breeze waters off Barbados and the Grenadines.

Greater adventures await in the next two or three years. Maps have been consulted for a grand voyage through the Panama Canal. The route would allow for whale watching off Baja and leopard shark dives off LA’s Channel Islands, before passing Westport’s HQ near Seattle. Prince of Wales Island would then mark the gateway to an Alaskan summer. Will charter guests be able to book part of their route? “Sorry to disappoint, but it’ll be only us the whole time,” says Paul. “That is if I can keep myself away from the office for that long.” After 40 charters the Petraccas are now master of their own yacht.

New Northern Marine 57 with 5,000-Mile Range

' src=

Northern Marine has just launched its latest 57 pilothouse long-range expedition yacht, designed for an owner-operator to cruise anywhere in the world.

Stuart Archer, the general manager of Northern Marine in Anacortes, Washington, wrote me that the 57, powered by a single 325-hp John Deere, has a range of 5,000 nm at 8.75 knots. The boat holds 2,600 gallons of fuel and burns 4.2 gph at that speed. Top speed is over 10 knots.

Northern Marine has a rich heritage of making commercial fishing boats, working trawlers and long-range expedition yachts. It was bought by Seattle Yachts in 2019, with a fleet now going from the 57 up to 100 feet.

The new 57 is the sixth hull in that line, and it has a two-stateroom, three-head layout, with an additional sleeping area in the settee in the pilothouse. Built for global travel, the 57 has two 17kW generators. An emergency get-home drive powered by one of them will deliver a 5-knot speed. The boat also has bow and stern thrusters.

The large engine room provides easy access to the machinery and also houses a sea-chest, replacing a series of through-hull fittings, to provide water throughout the boat. The sea-chest has a clear Lexan cover on top, above the waterline, for easy inspection and cleaning.

Two overhead cameras monitor all the gauges and systems in the engine room. The fuel filters are mounted above deck on the starboard side for an easy change underway.

The yacht’s aft deck is full width and protected by the overhang from the boat deck. It has a sink and fridge. A weather-tight door leads to the salon, with an L-shaped lounge to starboard, twin chairs and a high-gloss table to port. A flat-screen TV between the chairs can be raised on a power lift to face the galley with a white quartz stone countertop. Extra-large side windows let in lots of natural light.

The gourmet galley is up a step from the salon, and is equipped for a long cruise, with a trash compactor, dishwasher, fridge and other appliances, all with walnut veneer panels. A large pantry is on the port side.

Up two steps, the pilothouse has a four-person, L-shaped settee and a table that convert to a double berth behind the Stidd helm chair. Five fixed windows in front are at a reverse angle to reduce glare and shed water. An on-deck head is on the port side, just aft of a watertight door leading up to the flybridge.

Up top, the flybridge has two Stidd helm chairs, an ice-maker, fridge/freezer, sink and barbeque and unobstructed views forward. The flybridge is protected by a hardtop. The boat deck aft has a 1,500-pound hydraulic Steelhead crane.

The master stateroom is on the main deck under the pilothouse, with a centerline king-sized bed and large en suite head. You reach the guest stateroom via a separate stairway from the pilothouse. It has a walk-around queen bed and an en suite head.

Specs.: LOA: 57’0”; Beam: 17’6”; Draft: 5’10”; Disp.: 135,000 lbs.; Fuel: 2,600 gals.; Water: 420 gals.; Power: 1×325-hp John Deere. Read more:

60m superyacht ULTRA G marks Heesen’s first yacht launch for 2023

By Nina Done   2 February 2023

Representing the newest addition to the prestigious Heesen fleet , the 60m (196ft) superyacht ULTRA G , previously known as Project Skyfall , hit the water during a ceremony which took place on January 27 from their Oss facilities in the Netherland's, marking the yard's first superyacht launch for 2023.

Described by Heesen as the “ultimate expression of the knowledge and experience gained in over forty years of shipbuilding to the finest Dutch quality standards”, the all-aluminum yacht marks a long-standing collaboration between designers, with Omega Architects providing her unique exterior lines, while her engineering and Fast Displacement Hull Form comes courtesy of Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Meanwhile, London-based studio Harrison Eidsgaard is responsible for her chic interior styling.

The ultimate expression of the knowledge and experience gained in over forty years of shipbuilding to the finest Dutch quality standards

The superyacht has been custom-built and designed for a fishing enthusiast. Described by the yard as a “sport fisherman in yacht disguise”, yacht ULTRA G features a fully operable fish cockpit complete with a fighting chair and storage for 40 rods.

Superyacht luxury

When not reeling in big fishing game, the yacht has been primed for entertainment and relaxation, and bestowed with a wealth of amenities, including a media room featuring a vast 146-inch media wall, games area and custom wine fridge in her main salon, as well as an infinity pool on her sundeck.

Interior renderings for superyacht ULTRA G

She even flaunts her status as a dog-friendly yacht, equipped with a dedicated self-flushing “relief area” with synthetic grass, sensors, cameras and sprinklers.

Outstanding performance capabilities

Motor yacht ULTRA G also boasts exceptional power under the bonnet, with her 22,000 horsepower being generated by quad MTU 20V 4000 engines and four Kongsberg S90 waterjets, which help lower the yacht's draft to less than three meters and reduce vibration by 40 per cent compared with traditional shafts and propellers, for a smoother onboard experience. Under light load conditions, she is capable of delivering an impressive top speed of 37 knots.

She will be accompanied by a 24-meter custom built Vanquish tender, which has been designed in the mirror image of its mothership.

Yacht ULTRA G launched from Heesen

She will provide accommodation for 10 guests across five suites, including a master apartment positioned to offer complete privacy on her bridge deck, featuring a walk-in closet, large en suite with central oval tub and an intimate terrace with a Jacuzzi and inviting lounge area. Her remaining four cabins are found on her lower deck.

She is now ready for commissioning and will undergo rigorous testing in the North Sea, with delivery expected in the coming months following the successful completion of sea trials. It is not expected that superyacht ULTRA G will be available for charter once she’s delivered to her owner.

A luxury multimillion-dollar superyacht travelling between Westhaven and the Bay of Islands has spent most of Thursday anchored in Tauranga waters.

The 74m by 12m PLVS VLTRA pleasure craft, which was believed to be worth NZ$54 million, was spotted off the coast of Tauranga, anchored off Omanu Beach.

According to marinetraffic.com, the yacht left Westhaven on March 13 at 1.30pm and was expected to arrive in the Bay of Islands at 9am on Friday.

The site said the yacht has been anchored in Tauranga since at least 4am on Wednesday.

The vessel was built in 2016 in the Netherlands by Dutch company Amels and was delivered in 2016.

The superyacht can sleep 12 guests and boasts a crew of 19.

Weighing 1675 tonnes, the superyacht's home port is George Town in the Cayman Islands.

When the Bay of Plenty Times went to Omanu Beach this afternoon, one of the guests could be seen leaving the boat on a jet ski while another appeared to enjoy the view from one the of yacht's three decks. People wearing blue jumpers could also be seen on board.

Allan Mundy, who is a senior club member of Omanu Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, said he first noticed the superyacht about 7.30am on Wednesday and although he had seen many yachts in the area in the past, this one was definitely the nicest one he had seen there.

"It's a beautiful looking craft."

Superyacht owners are often guarded about the interiors of their vessels, just as most of us would be with the interior of our homes. This week, the owner of Lana —one of the largest yachts ever built by the Benetti yard in Italy—allowed images of the 351-footer to go public, courtesy of Imperial Yachts , which was the owner’s representative on the build and now is overseeing the yacht’s charter.

Lana has no shortage of exquisite features, from the hand-sculpted onyx dining table to a winter garden that overlooks the sea. There’s also a large swimming pool, cinema room, a full gym and multiple social spaces, indoors and out.

The vessel’s interior is vast but tasteful. The beach club, in its way, represents the overall elegance of the yacht, with a large salon on the interior that connects to large fold-out terraces on either side, and lounges in the hallway between treatment rooms. A hammam , or Turkish bath, with ornate walls and large marble table, expands the beach club’s spa experience.

The interior is elegant, contemporary and spacious, such as the main dining area with a table for 16.  Imperial Yachts

The ensemble of spacious cabins, comprised of the owner’s suite on the wheelhouse deck and seven VIP staterooms on the main deck, add to the sense of luxury across the yacht. The full-beam master cabin has windows and a terrace on both sides, with pieces of modern art, Art Deco-style light fixtures and stylized wood paneling. The 8’9”-high ceilings add to the suite’s sense of space.

The main deck is defined by dozens of floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the superstructure, allowing plenty of natural light, while the 50-foot beam fosters the sense of open space. Social areas were critical to the design of this yacht and include everything from the terraces by the pool to a salon up near the wheelhouse, complete with a baby grand piano.

Lana ’s beautiful interior can be experienced as a charter yacht in the Mediterranean, and next winter, in the Indian Ocean. “Lana has an incredible appeal that will make her, for sure, the next decade superyacht charter yacht to experience in her range,” Julia Stewart, Imperial director, said in a statement. “She is bold, unique, sleek and aggressive, mixing perfect experience at sea with unforgettable charter moments.”
