Following a pandemic pause, river cruise ships have returned to inland waterways around the world, affording travelers a slow and immersive way to explore riverside towns and sights without the hassle of checking into and out of hotels and figuring out local transportation.

New itineraries and themed cruises in 2024 make it possible to go farther afield and explore areas of interest more deeply (such as Black history, cuisine, biking, and hiking). Alternatively, classic tried-and-true routes will bring guests to UNESCO World Heritage sites and other must-see as well as under-the-radar attractions, with most (if not all) of your accommodations, meals, excursions, and Wi-Fi included in your cruise fare.

If you are thinking of taking a river cruise, here are some new and favorite options to consider.

When it comes to riverside scenery, it’s hard to beat the Rhine, with its 40-mile UNESCO World Heritage-protected Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Here, passengers will want to be out on deck admiring the castles dotting the shoreline. All major river cruise lines offer sailings along the Rhine between Amsterdam and Basel, Switzerland. But for those who want to get their heart rate up a little to the backdrop of stunning Rhine River views, Avalon Waterways’ 166-passenger Avalon Expression cruises a seven-night “ Active & Discovery ” itinerary that combines classic sightseeing with hiking, biking, kayaking, and other adrenaline-boosting experiences. Passengers can e-bike through the Black Forest, trek along the river in Strasbourg, France, and kayak the canals of Amsterdam, among other activities. The cruises are available on select dates, from April to September.

Best river cruise lines around the world

Fran Golden

River cruising is the original slow way to travel, as you cruise the calm waters of inland waterways just like Cleopatra did on the Nile. The best river cruise ships are floating hotels with views galore, such as the castles and vineyards of the Rhine or the rice paddies and villages on stilts along the Mekong.

River ships dock near key attractions and feature mostly-inclusive pricing; fares include such perks as basic daily walking tours and wine and beer at meals. But beyond that standard, there are differences in the products. One person's idea of a great vacation may be extraordinary excursions such as an exclusive dinner in a chateau, while others may want spacious cabins or as much foie gras and French cheese as you can possibly eat. Want to relax in a swimming pool? That's doable on some but not all ships. And some river cruises are much more active than others with, for instance, biking and hiking tours.

Here's a rundown of the best river cruise lines traversing inland waterways around the world.

riverboat cruises in the world

The world's largest river cruise line, Viking has a fleet that in Europe includes dozens of cutting-edge, 190-passenger "longships" with light-filled atriums, an appealing contemporary Scandinavian decor, and cabins with step-out balconies. An outdoor restaurant on the bow means you never miss a chance to take in unobstructed views.

The value-packed experience is geared toward adults and is consistently high quality. Destinations include all the popular rivers of Europe — such as the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Bordeaux, Rhone, Elbe and Douro — as well as the Nile in Egypt, the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, and the Mississippi.

For those seeking consistency and value, Viking is the best of the mainstream river companies.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways offers such popular upscale features as a top-deck swimming pool with swim-up bar and a big focus on cuisine; its multiple dining venues use high-quality ingredients and its Chef's Table experience is focused on fine local food and wine. The 106- to 196-passenger ships in Europe also have a wellness focus with small spas and fitness rooms and a fleet of bikes for use either on your own or on organized excursions.

AmaWaterways' partnership with Adventures by Disney means families are on board select chartered sailings on the Seine, Rhine and Danube. In addition to a big presence on all the main rivers of Europe, the line sails the Mekong and Nile, as well as the Chobe River of Botswana.

AmaWaterways hits a sweet spot for both foodies and active travelers (and families on the Disney sailings).

Uniworld positions itself as a high-end luxury line. Its ships are designed as floating palace hotels, employing marble, Murano glass and expensive fabrics in its over-the-top decor. Don't be surprised if you find yourself lounging in a room decked out in animal prints. The 159-passenger S.S. Catherine on the Rhone and Saone, for instance, boasts a $1 million art collection.

For foodies, foie gras, fresh oysters, regional cheeses and other local delicacies appear on menus. Guests in suites on select ships have butlers on call. Bikes are available to borrow, and the ships have gyms and spas, and, on some ships, lavish indoor pools. Family departures add active excursions, arts and crafts, and visits to amusement parks.

In addition to the major rivers of Europe, Uniworld cruises the less-traversed Po River in Italy (from Venice) and has ships on the Nile and Mekong as well as the Ganges in India.

If you are looking for Old World-style luxury with dramatic flair, Uniworld is your line.

Sleek ships with marble lobbies, mid-century furnishings and impressive art collections mark the Australian-owned Scenic as all about luxurious, high-end river cruising. Butler service is part of the scene, and so are free-flowing cocktails, e-bikes and six dining options – all for a passenger contingent of fewer than 170.

Included shore excursions go beyond the standard tours that most lines offer, such as a visit to the Szechenyi baths in Budapest. If you prefer independent travel, Scenic provides a nifty GPS gadget about the size of a cellphone, loaded with maps and commentary that is automatically activated at points of interest. Most of the ships have a pool on the sun deck, along with a fitness center and spa.

Routes include the Rhine and Danube, the Seine, Saone, Rhone, Garonne and Dordogne in Bordeaux, and Portugal's Douro, as well as the Mekong.

When it comes to an active, contemporary, luxury experience, Scenic is at the top.

Emerald Cruises

riverboat cruises in the world

A sister line to Scenic but priced for budget-conscious travelers, Emerald continues the cool decor on its 182-passenger "Star Ships." The design highlight is an amazing infinity-style indoor/outdoor pool that converts (with a cover) into a movie theater at night.

Fares include most tours, even well-programmed full-day tours with lunch ashore. Destinations include the Danube, Rhine, Main, Rhone, and Douro, as well as the Mekong.

For those watching their pennies, Emerald is the best of the budget-priced ships.

Related: Are river cruises right for kids?

Leading luxury tour operator Tauck has its own fleet of award-winning 84- to 130-passenger river ships cruising the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Rhone and Seine. The big selling point here is that a Tauck tour director and three Tauck cruise directors are on board all departures, assuring that guests are catered to.

The ships deliver great food and wine and beyond-the-norm experiences on shore, such as the chance to sip local varietals in a wine cave. Special family departures — Tauck Bridges — cater to multigenerational families, adding such kid-friendly adventures as a scavenger hunt at the Louvre in Paris. Some staterooms on the newer ships are lofts with high ceilings and a raised seating area; some ships have a Jacuzzi and putting green on the sun deck. Local performers including dance troupes come on board to entertain.

The hand-held, everything-taken-care-of luxury experience that Tauck provides is hard to beat.

Avalon Waterways

riverboat cruises in the world

Avalon is owned by the Globus Family of Brands, a tour operator company, and that experience comes into play on shore, with such VIP experiences as skipping the line at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Pricing on this line is middle of the road, with everything comfortable, reliable and not overly fussy. That said, on the company's sleek, 166-passenger Suite Ships, you can splurge on a Panorama Suite with sitting areas and glass doors that open to bring the fresh air in.

The company lets you personalize your experience down to the kind of pillows you prefer. All ships have a fitness room and fleet of bikes for tours in places such as Amsterdam and Cochem, Germany. There are also hiking excursions. The ships traverse waterways that include the Seine, Rhine, Danube, Douro, Main, Moselle, Rhone, Saone and Mekong.

Avalon is your best choice in the affordable, active category.

CroisiEurope Cruises

French line CroisiEurope caters to travelers on a tight budget and does river cruising in a friendly European style. Among the differences here is you won't just be cruising with fellow Americans. The passenger contingent is mostly bargain-seekers from France and Germany, and you'll hear onboard announcements in multiple languages. Everything from the food and service to the entertainment caters to that crowd. Some will love the idea of cruising like a European, while others may miss, for instance, a wide breadth of entree choices at dinner.

The family-run line has several dozen mostly older ships that operate on rivers that include the Danube, Rhine, Rhone and Saone but also such less-traversed waterways as the Elbe between Berlin and Prague, France's Loire, Spain's Guadalquivir and the Markermeer in the Netherlands. CroiseEurope also has ships on the Nile, Mekong, and Chobe River in Africa.

Try CroisiEurope if you want to grab super-low bargain fares and see Europe with a local crowd.

Grand Circle Line

Part of tour company Grand Circle Travel, this line is a popular affordable choice for travelers age 55-plus in Europe. The fleet of 46- to 140-passenger ships cruises waterways that include the Seine, Rhine, Mosel, Main, Danube and Rhone. Always onboard are Grand Circle program directors supplementing the onboard team and assuring a certain amount of handholding on ship and shore; your American tastes and expectations will be catered to. The line focuses attention on onboard enrichment, such as lectures, dance performances and cooking demonstrations. On shore, Grand Circle's signature experiences are a home visit with a local family and a school visit.

Grand Circle is a top choice company for solo travelers because the ships feature a good number of small cabins designed and priced for one, plus reduced single-supplement pricing for solos who want larger rooms.

American Cruise Lines

riverboat cruises in the world

American Cruise Lines offers cruises on more U.S. waterways than any other river line. Of course, the company's fleet of U.S.-flagged 100- to 190-passenger river ships (including authentic paddlewheelers) travels the popular Mississippi and Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. But it also offers itineraries along the rivers of the San Francisco Bay Area (including a stop in Napa Valley's wine country), Florida's east coast (visiting Amelia Island and St. Augustine) and New York (offering overnight trips on the Hudson). Multi-state trips via the Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers round out the offerings.

The crew is all-American, and the ships play up the American theming. Civil War theme cruises are particularly popular.

The river cruises command big prices — from about $575 per person, per night for an ambiance that is comfortably upscale. Particularly on the newer ships, guests stay in big, hotel-like staterooms with indoor sitting areas and balconies (on the 175-passenger American Symphony, for instance, cabins range from 250 to 650 square feet). Local entertainment comes on board, the food is often locally sourced, and cocktail parties are included in the cruise fare.

These river cruises attract mostly older travelers. There are no bars, but that's a bonus in terms of socializing. Everyone goes to the cocktail parties, and getting to know your fellow passengers is a big part of the experience.

Aqua Expeditions

riverboat cruises in the world

Crowd-free and high-end luxury cruises are this line's calling card both on the Peruvian Amazon and the Mekong. On the 32- to 40-passenger ships, you are embraced in designer decor and expanses of glass, so you don't miss any views. Exquisite gourmet cuisine in both destinations is overseen by top chefs known for their award-winning land-based restaurants, with local ingredients a focus. Tours ashore (sometimes two a day) are often via private, 10-passenger skiffs.

For the privilege of sailing with this line, you may have to pay $1000 per person, per night. The shortest sailings are three nights on the Amazon. Families with kids ages 7 and up are welcome.

Aqua Expeditions is hands down the best luxury product on the Amazon and Mekong; intimate cruising at its finest.

17 of the world's best river cruises.

From drifting the backwaters of India and tracing the Nile to fording the Amazon's remotest reaches, these journeys take you, in style, to places the roads just don't go

1. Rhine: Fairytales, castles and rivers

riverboat cruises in the world

Bo ppard on the Rhine, Middle Rhine Valley (Dreamstime)

Length: 1,320km

Timing : Year-long; December brings incredible winter markets, but berths book up fast. Summer is hot and busy, with the shoulder months (April or September) a good compromise.

The river: Since the height of the Holy Roman Empire, the Rhine has been the busiest waterway in Europe. But while dense shipping can impact on views in places, its scenery remains the most varied on the continent, ranging from battlefields and vineyards to Baroque palaces and medieval castles, as it trickles out of Switzerland and through western Germany to the Dutch coast.

The sights: Germany’s 65km stretch of Middle Rhine Valley is the fairytale river of popular imagination, studded with castles, medieval villages and hill-top palaces. Four-day cruises from Strasbourg to Koblenz are a great way to pack this in – along with the Rhineland’s vineyards – while avoiding the river’s more pragmatic parts. Plus, Strasbourg’s Cathedral is among the finest medieval buildings in Europe .

Detours: Side trips along Rhine tributary the Moselle reward with classy views, especially on the final hairpin bends between Trier, Germany’s oldest city, and Koblenz. Weeklong trips between these cities take in ‘wine capital’ Bernkastel and medieval Beilstein, overlooked by the imposing Metternich Castle.

2. Kerala Backwaters: Drift southern India in a rice barge

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 900km

Timing: Winter (Nov-Feb) is cooler but can also be quite busy. In monsoon season (Jun-Oct) expect heavy rain in the afternoon.

The area: Kerala’s network of canals, lakes, rivers and tributaries offer a slow-motion take on India’s south-east, along waterways sketched liberally in mangrove forest and drifting past bird sanctuaries, plantations and vast paddies. Most cruisers amble along in kettuvallam (rice barges), dinky houseboats crafted from bamboo and coconut fibres (coir), in which time seems to stand still.

The sights: Most houseboat cruises set out from Alleppey (Alappuzha). From here, side trips overland to Munnar’s Western Ghats and Periyar NP reward with bracing walks and tiger-spotting opportunities respectively, but the main appeal lies in simply drifting. Typical trips meander via the vast lake of Vembanad to the island-clustered village of Kumarakom, all the way to Cochin (Kochi) where sail-like Chinese fishing nets and colonial facades greet your arrival.

Detours : Tired of the slow life? Try the Brahmaputra River, which flashes through India’s far western states. Eight-day trips sail from Nimati in West Bengal to Guwahati, Assam, with visits to Kaziranga NP (best Nov-Apr) to spy rare one-horned rhinos a worthy side trip.

3. Nile: Return to Egypt

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 6,853km

Timing: Boats sail year-round, but Oct-April is the coolest period, with high season (Dec-Feb) not nearly as busy as it used to be.

The river : Prior to 2011, a reported 10,000 trips a year were made on the Nile. But recent times have seen that number fall to just a few hundred as troubles elsewhere in the country take effect. Yet the Nile Valley has remained largely untouched by incident, and with London-Luxor flights having since resumed, the ancient waterway should be high on agendas.

The sights: The Cairo-to-Aswan ‘long Nile’ cruise (880km) returned to itineraries in 2015 following a two-decade absence. But with the capital still making the wrong kind of headlines, its southern reaches may prove more attractive. Set sail from Luxor, in any one of a range of vessels – from a classic small cruise ship, to the Agatha Christie-inspiring Steam Ship Sudan or a dahabeya houseboat with its giant sails – before exploring vast temples (Karnak, Kom Ombo, Edfu) and ancient necropolises (Valley of the Kings) en route to Aswan. From there, a side trip to Abu Simbel, a pair of huge rock temples hewn out of a mountainside near the Sudanese border, is a must.

Detours: Some tours include two-night trips downstream from Aswan aboard a small felucca (traditional wooden sailing boat) with mattresses slung on deck for a night under the stars.

4. Danube: Waltz across Eastern Europe

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 2,888km

Timing: Year-long; summer can leave water levels low, so avoid the hotter months (Jun-Jul) to skip potential cancellation disappointments.

The river: Veining nine countries (and edging another), the Danube stumbles over more borderlines than a four-year-old attempting an MC Escher colouring-in book. Nineteen nations in total share its basin and, from the Germany’s Black Forest to the Black Sea, it seeps through a spectacular array of landscapes, from the vineyards of Austria and Soviet-era architecture of Belgrade to the gorges and peaks of Romania .

The sights: Typical trips last around eight days, starting in Nuremberg, Germany, and drifting through Austria to finish in Hungarian capital Budapest. The more adventurous will likely be drawn to the river’s eastern fringes, where cruises usually depart the Baroque Austrian streets of Linz for the Little Carpathians of Slovakia and on through Serbia’s ‘Iron Gates’, the clawed gorges that mark its border with Romania. These trips tend to culminate in Tulcea, which has good links to explore the dramatic Black Sea delta.

DETOURS: For those inclined towards the epic, 24-day cruises incorporate the waterways of Amsterdam and parts of the Rhine and Main rivers before linking up with the Danube Canal in Nuremberg and pushing on to the Black Sea.

5. Mekong: Wildlife and pagodas in South-East Asia

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 4,350km

Timing: Year-round; winter (Nov-Feb) is cooler but tends to be packed, while rainy season (Jun-Oct) is less busy, with heavy – if often fleeting – showers.

The river: In the heat of the Loatian summer, it’s difficult to believe that the source of the Mekong lies high up in the meltwaters of the Himalayas. Today, development along the river remains admirably restrained when compared to the rest of Asia’s rivers, a fact appreciated as you drift the lower reaches' bamboo jungle, stilt villages, floating markets, rice fields and pagodas between Laos and the South China Sea.

The sights: Typical week-long cruises either traverse Laos from laid-back Luang Prabang biodiversity almost rivals that of the Amazon, Siem Reap in particular a popular jumping-off temple complex, while the tragic legacies of the Khmer Rouge and Vietnam War resound in the museums, POW camps and tunnels of Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh.

Detours: New 14-day trips along the Mekong’s upper section begin in late 2017, on what’s said to be the first cruises to take in this part of the river. From Vientiane, you’ll float over the Chinese border to Jinghong, wandering Laos’s Plain of Jars and the Dai villages of Yunnan en route.

6. Amazon: Welcome to the jungle

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 6,992km

Timing: Wet season (Dec-May) means better access to the Amazon’s smaller tributaries, fewer crowds and spectacular wildlife watching.

The river: The majority of the world’s largest river runs through Brazil and Peru, with the former attracting the bulk of the traffic – and visitors. Legions of vessels prowl the broad, noisy stretches between Manaus and the Colombian border, which is why the adventurous look elsewhere…

The sights: The ‘alternative’ often means Peru, where shallow-bottomed riverboats set out from Iquitos to the Amazon’s northern tributaries (Ucayali, Marañon, Tahuayo) all the way to its headwaters. Trips (4-7 days) thread blackwater streams and islands swarming with iguanas to the Pacaya-Samiria reserve, a 20,000 sq km of flooded, wildlife-packed jungle. Pit-stop in river villages, swim with pink river dolphins and soak up one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

Detours: The wildlife reserve and freshwater archipelago of the Anavilhanas lies around 75km upstream from Manaus, Brazil, along the Rio Negro tributary. Go in dry season (May-Nov) when its islands and channels come alive with jaguars, manatees and some spectacular birdlife.

7. Hooghly: History and tigers in India’s West Bengal

Length: 260km

Timing: Year-round; October to April brings milder temperatures.

The river: This West Bengal tributary of the Ganges embraced river tours, after its once dried up flows were bolstered by a diversion from the main stem. Since then, shallow-draft ships have opened up the route, with week-long cruises from Farakka to Kolkata ploughed by a handful of luxury craft, pushing deep into West Bengal’s storied fringes.

The sights: India’s imperial west is the incentive here, with visits to Murshidabad and its impossible Palace of 1,000 Doors, which was the seat of the Murghal nawab (ruler), as well as the Battlefield of Plassey, where the last independent ruler of the region was defeated by the British in 1757. Stops at the ruined city of Gaur and terracotta temples of Kalna delve even further back into an era and region little explored by visitors.

Detours: Trips upstream along the Ganges from Farakka are possible in August/September, when the high waters allow you to journey to the holy city of Varanasi, spying gangetic river dolphins and pilgrimage sites en route.

8. Yangtze: Ghosts and gorges of China

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 6,300km

Timing: Year-round; spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) offer cooler breezes and fewer mosquitoes.

The river: The Yangtze is big! It is said more people live on its banks than in the entire US, and even the boats that cruise it (100-250 passengers) are huge, thanks to local demand and a dearth of low bridges. But it has changed. The controversial Three Gorges Dam has taken its toll, raising water levels and erasing villages along its most popular stretch, between Chongqing and Shanghai. The epic scenery, however, remains breathtaking.

The sights: Trips tend to vary between ten-day voyages from Chongqing to Shanghai and abbreviated three/four-day jaunts, usually to the towering gorges of Wuhan, which are part of a longer trip that includes flights to Beijing and Xi’an. Other Yangtze pit-stops include the ‘ghost city’ of Fengdu (pictured left), where a vast ‘ghost king’ statue cradles a mountainside of monasteries and shrines, before drifting on to the first – and most dramatic – gorge, Xiling, its steep-sided, misty canyons velveted in a lush canvas.

Detours: A side-trip to Guilin (1.5-hour flights from Chongqing) rewards with trips on the Li River, floating amid karst rises and terraced hills; meanwhile Suzhou – 30 minutes by train from Shanghai – is the gateway to the old water towns of Jiangsu province, laced with scenic canals and Qing-era gardens.

9. Chobe: Cruise Botswana’s Big Five

Length: 731km

Timing: Botswana’s dry season (Apr-Oct) sees water sources inland become scarce, improving the chances of spotting wildlife from the river.

The river: The Chobe is the name given to the lower section of southern Africa’s Cuando River, which rises out of Angola, edges Namibia and northern Botswana before flushing into the mighty Zambezi. Plush river cruisers float its middle reaches, heading out from Kasane, Botswana, and into the wild wetlands of the Okavango Delta and the Chobe National Park.

The sights: Most tours include four days on the Chobe River as a part of a longer trip (12-14 days), usually beginning in South Africa’s Johannesburg and ending at Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls (pictured above). In between, drift the park’s teak and mahogany-riddled banks, as giant marabou stork watch on and great egrets swoop overhead seemingly mocking gravity. River and overland safaris bring you closer to the park’s huge herds of elephants and buffalo, with plenty of opportunities to spy big game from the water.

Detours: Take advantage of a longer trip to cram in more nature. Many tours can include nights and game drives in South Africa’s Kruger NP, known for its large numbers of rare white rhinos.

10. Irrawaddy: Myanmar (Burma) by water

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 2,170km

Timing: Year-round; dry season (Nov-Feb) sees cooler temperatures

The river: Like South-East Asia’s other alpha rivers, the Irrawaddy’s Himalayan source offers stark contrast to the hot plains of Burma that most cruisers experience. Here, luxurious colonial-style riverboats regularly skim the waters between Yangon and Mandalay (11-15 days), dipping in at Inle Lake and Bagan.

The sights: Two-day cruises from Mandalay to the temple complex of Bagan are a fine way to quickly soak up the region. The city is still flecked with remnants of its colonial heyday, especially around its old docks, while the golden monastery speaks of another era entirely. Both cities feature on the round-trip to Bhamo (11 days), before peaking in the stark gorges and remote villages, such as Katha, of the distant north, near the Chinese border, where fewer visitors tread.

Detours: To escape the crowds further, the Chindwin tributary branches of Burma’s Upper Irrawaddy and brushes steep-sided cliffs, lush jungle, and en route to Homalin, with potential land trips across the border to the Indian state of Nagaland – offering a different world entirely.

11. Mississippi: Birth of a nation

riverboat cruises in the world

Boat in the Mississippi River (Dreamstime)

Length: 3,734km

Timing: Riverboats plunge the lower reaches of the river during winter (Nov-Dec) and summer (Apr-Jun).

The river: The Mississippi occupies a powerful place in the American imagination, with a crowded history that takes in everything from the American Civil War to the creation of rock ’n’ roll as it swerves ten states, its waters still ploughed by giant paddle ships.

The sights: It’s the lower New Orleans-to- Memphis stretch of this vast river that truly feels like the Mississippi of Mark Twain and the history books. Eight-day cruises typically begin in the ‘Big Easy’, with stops narrating the birth of modern America, from the harrowing plantations of Oak Alley, which explore the antebellum homesteads that witnessed the heyday of slavery in the US, to the battlefield of Vicksburg, where the Civil War turned in favour of the Yankees. In between lie ageing river towns, wild swamps and rock ’n’ roll legends.

Detours: Longer cruises along the lower, middle (Cairo, Illinois, to St Louis, Missouri) and upper (St Louis to St Paul, Minnesota) parts of the river are a veritable three-week PhD in Americana.

12. Volga: Russia made easy

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 3,530km

Timing: The bulk of the river is navigable between March and December.

The river: Stretching from the hills north of Moscow down to the Caspian Sea, the Volga is Russia : impossibly vast and wrinkled with an operatic and turbulent history narrated in the folktales, buildings and cities that line its banks.

The sights: The route between Moscow and St Petersburg (10-15 days) is a popular one, following the Volga for part of the way, fording rural villages and some of Europe’s largest lakes. But the true Volga experience is found on its lower reaches, strung between Moscow and ‘caviar capital’ Astrakhan (12 days). This covers 3,000km in a blur of onion-domed cathedrals and (bloody) Red history, pit-stopping at the UNESCO-listed city of Yaroslavl and drifting through the Republic of Tartarstan before pitching into a vast, wild delta speckled with lotus flowers and flamingos.

Detours: The Neva River makes up the final stretch of the Moscow-St Petersburg route, seeping from Lake Ladoga through the delta that St Petersburg sits on. It’s a quick way to get a taste of Russia and see some fine architecture.

13. Rhone: The reign of terroir

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 812km

Timing: Cruises run from March to November, with grape harvests typically taking place between August and October.

The river: From the glaciers of Switzerland , the Rhône plunges west through France, branching into the Saône as its pushes on to the Mediterranean. This last stretch is pure gastronome country, with typical wine-themed cruises traversing Provence and Burgundy aboard small riverboats and barges, pit-stopping at vineyards and crumbling Gallic castles.

The sights: Most routes combine both regions (and rivers), usually beginning or ending in Beaune, the heart of the Burgundy region where pinot noir and Chardonnay grapes rule the roost. From there, wend vineyards, châteaux and medieval cities, stopping in gastronomic capital Lyon and finishing in Provençal Arles. Try and include a visit to Camargue, where the Rhône flows into the sea; this delta is packed with birdlife and crowds of promenading flamingos.

Detours: Alternative French wine cruises either combine the Dordogne and Garonne rivers (setting off from Bordeaux) or drift the Loire Valley, an area known for its castles, barges and Sancerres.

14. Murray: Australia’s answer to the Mississippi

Length: 2,735km

Timing: Cruises operate year-round on the lower river, but tours further inland rely on the higher waters of spring.

The river: The ‘mighty Murray’ shaped Australian history. Back in the 19th century, the river was a major shipping route, ferrying goods across three states (Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia). Today, paddle ships now inch passengers through its lower reaches, edging wildlife reserves and red gum forests.

The sights: Luxury steamers line the lower river between Murray Bridge and the old trading posts of Mannum and Morgan (3-7 days). En route, the riverbank hums with wildlife, from wombats and kangaroos to the rich array of birdlife that flits its shores, while week-long trips typically cram in hikes, small-boat safaris, wine tastings and a visit to the Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve.

Detours: To explore the reserves, vineyards and tributaries of upstream, swap steamers for a catamaran and overnight stays on land. Week-long cruises from Echuca, once Oz’s busiest inland port, only run in November, when the high water allows.

15. Caledonian Canal: Barging through Scotland

Length: 100km

Timing: Cruises run between April and October.

The canal: Cutting a gash across northern Scotland from Inverness to Fort William on the west coast, the Great Glen fault carves its way through fen, forest and fell. By 1822, it would also shepherd the Caledonian Canal, a hand-dug waterway using vast lochs (Ness, Lochy, Oich), like stepping stones, to ferry trawlers inland from the North Sea. Today, it’s mostly small barges (8-12 people) ploughing its waters on week-long trips.

The sights: The canal’s setting is drama enough, especially seen atop a low-slung barge while inching through the Highlands. Soak in the raw beauty of the country’s lochs while pit-stopping at Cawdor Castle and cruise the locks of Neptune’s Staircase as you descend to the village of Corpach, overshadowed by the mighty Ben Nevis, before warming up with a wee nip at a Scottish whisky tasting.

Detours: If you prefer a ship to a barge, cruises from Inverness continue on to the isles off the west coast during summer (May-Sept), visiting Eigg, Skye and the sea loch of Inverie in the remote Knoydart peninsula. Pure isolation.

16. Douro: Port, parks and Portugal

riverboat cruises in the world

Length: 897km

Timing: Year-round; go May or – for barefooted grape-stomping – September.

The river: From the medieval dockyards of coastal Porto, the Douro winds sun-dappled vineyards, plunging locks, valleys and Portuguese villages to the Spanish border. Its headwaters, however, lie further on in central Spain, with week-long cruises usually culminating amid the grandiose walls of Salamanca.

The sights: Wander the Romanesque streets of Porto before cruising into the Douro Valley for port tastings and visits to traditional Iberian villages such as Pinhão. Upriver, rocky gorges hide nesting griffon vultures, with trips to the Douro Natural Park (straddling the Spanish border) a must. But the highlight is the UNESCO-listed Salamanca, a bustling university town speckled with cathedrals and golden sandstone.

Detours: Further south, the Guadiana and Guadalquivir also offer similar under-the-radar escapes on the Portuguese border and Spain’s Andalusia region. Cruises thread between Seville and Cádiz, and even splash into the Atlantic to switch rivers as you explore vineyards, national parks and Moorish architecture along the way.

17. Columbia: Go west in the USA

Length: 2,000km

Timing: Boats run between April and October, but bring plenty of warm clothing – even during summer. Early October sees the grape harvest.

The river: The Columbia River slips through the Canadian Rockies and over the US border into Washington to the Oregon coast. Together with its main tributary, the Snake River, this stretch is best known as the final part of Lewis and Clark’s 1804 expedition into the then-uncharted west.

The sights: Small boat and paddle wheel cruises explore the last push of the duo, from Clarkston, Washington, to Astoria on the Pacific coast – albeit in more comfort. Explore the petroglyphs of the deepest river gorge in the US, Hells Canyon, under the watchful gaze of its Bighorn sheep, then push on to the Multnomah Falls. Most cruises take in a trip to Fort Clatsop, the expedition’s furthest point in 1805, and give you time to explore the Dalles (the end of the old pioneer wagon route), hip Portland and towering Mount St Helens.

Detours: Forget pioneer hardships on a wine cruise along the Columbia between Portland and Vancouver (Washington) – a chance to savour the vineyards and seasonal grape harvesting.

A barge on the Rhône (Getty Images)

1. The Rhône

River cruises pass through some of the loveliest countryside in France , which shimmers in a haze of purple during lavender season. Boats sail on the Saône and the Rhône between Chalon-sur-Saône or Lyons and the ports near the Rhône delta, such as Avignon, Tarascon and Arles. The Romans left their mark in the magnificent amphitheatre at Arles and the graceful Pont du Gard, while the Palais des Papes at Avignon, centre of the medieval Christian world, is truly impressive. Further north, the wine country around Lyons awaits, as well as the city itself, rightly proud of its culinary heritage. You’ll dock in the heart of some charming old towns along the way too, from Tournon, guarded by a castle on a bluff, to medieval Viviers, a tangle of cobbled streets clinging to the side of the hill.

How to do it Go on one of the wine-themed cruises from Avalon Waterways — it covers some of the loveliest bits of Burgundy and Provence.

The Danube at Budapest (Alamy)

2. The Danube

The Danube rises in the Black Forest, cutting across central Europe and forcing its way through the jagged Iron Gates Gorge before fragmenting into 2,200 square miles of marshy, wildlife-rich delta at the Black Sea. A cruise packs in plenty of cultural attractions, from the baroque elegance of Vienna to the old centre of Bratislava in Slovakia, dominated by an imposing 17th-century castle. Buzzing Budapest is especially beautiful at night, when floodlights illuminate the bridges and the hilltop Castle District. You’ll sail along the Wachau Valley, one of Austria ’s most notable wine regions, visiting Melk, with its magnificent abbey, and medieval Dürnstein. Day trips include the fairytale Czech town of Cesky Krumlov and the Austrian city of Salzburg. There’s a cruise for every budget on this popular river, from short breaks to the all-inclusive luxury lines.

How to do it A Taste of the Danube is a short sailing (four days) from Avalon Waterways, which covers all the main stops with the option to extend your stay.

The Yangtze (Sanctuary Retreats)

3. The Yangtze

Asia ’s longest river snakes its way through the countryside for 3,900 miles, but cruises explore a much shorter section: the dramatic canyons and jagged mountains of the Three Gorges. Most Yangtze cruises are part of a longer itinerary around China that includes the magnificent Terracotta Army at Xi’an, Beijing’s sprawling Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the bright lights of Shanghai. You’ll spy intricate temples, precarious walkways on the cliffs, mysterious hanging coffins suspended high above the water, and the eerie Fengdu Ghost City on Ming Mountain. In stark contrast, the Three Gorges Dam is an engineering marvel on an awesome scale. Aim for April, May, September or October — summer is hot and humid, while winter tends to be cold and gloomy.

The Moselle at Bernkastel (Alamy)

4. The Moselle

The narrow Moselle twists and turns its way through tranquil vineyards and the wooded hills of Luxembourg, France and Germany . Cruises usually operate between Luxembourg or Trier and Koblenz, where the river flows into the Rhine. The Roman antiquities at Trier are impressive, particularly the Porta Nigra city gate. Cochem is a classically pretty wine-producing town, dominated by the fairytale Reichsburg Castle, while Bernkastel’s cobbled centre dates back to the 15th century. Wine tasting is a theme wherever you visit.

How to do it The Moselle Valley — Vines & Views cruise from Tui sails round-trip from Frankfurt and includes stops in Trier and Koblenz.

The Seine in Paris

5. The Seine

Ships sail on the Seine from the heart of Paris to the river’s wide mouth at Le Havre, passing through bucolic scenes of willow-draped banks, medieval towns and meadows where plump cattle and apple orchards are farmed to produce camembert, cider and calvados. The museums, galleries and designer shops of Paris aside, highlights of a Seine cruise include the intricate Palace of Versailles and medieval Rouen. From Vernon, there’s a chance to visit Monet’s beautiful garden at Giverny, while some itineraries feature Mont St Michel and the D-Day beaches, as well as a day at Honfleur, a jumble of half-timbered houses around a 17th-century fishing harbour.

How to do it The Paris to Normandy itinerary with Avalon Waterways is the classic sailing, but you can also opt to start your trip in London.

Cruising in Kerala (Abhishek Prasad/Unsplash)

6. Kerala backwaters

Kerala’s intricate network of canals, lakes and rivers is lined with mangroves and coconut palms, with emerald paddy fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Alleppey is the usual starting point for rice-barge cruises, which take in the vast, shallow Lake Vembanad, including Kumarakom village, laced with canals, and Fort Kochi in the enchantingly crumbling district of Cochin. Otherwise, the joy of a rice-barge voyage is life along the waterways: women in dazzling saris, washing clothes at the water’s edge; the turquoise flash of a kingfisher; schoolchildren running along the banks; and elaborate temples and churches standing tall.

How to do it Join the Exodus 14-day Tropical South itinerary to see Kerala and its neighbour Tamil Nadu.

The old town hall in Bamberg (Alamy)

7. The Main

Germany’s often overlooked Main trickles through flourishing water meadows against a setting of wooded hills, with some of the country’s most spectacular ancient towns perched on its marshy banks. Medieval Bamberg’s most famous sight is the crooked town hall, clinging to an island in the river. The city is known for its smoked beer, a tasting of which may be included in a shore excursion. Würzburg’s Residenz palace is considered a masterpiece of baroque architecture, while other towns along the banks are straight out of the Grimms’ fairytales, not least Miltenberg, a perfectly preserved medieval settlement with cobbled streets and squares lined with colourful half-timbered houses.

How to do it You have two options with Avalon Waterways. The Germany Grandeur tour is longer and takes in more sights, but the Festive Season in the Heart of Germany itinerary is perfect for soaking up the Christmas spirit.

The Amazon in Peru (G Adventures)

8. The Amazon

A voyage along the tributaries of the mighty Amazon takes you through some of the most remote terrain on the planet, dipping into Peru ’s steamy Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, with plenty of chances to spot extraordinary wildlife. You’ll explore skinny, snaking waterways by skiff, on the lookout for pink river dolphins, caiman and turtles. Three-toed sloths snooze in the trees, while howler and capuchin monkeys scamper through the branches and scarlet macaws fly low over the forest canopy. You can head off on a hike with a guide, as well as kayak, fish for piranha and meet the indigenous people who live along the banks.

How to do it Mixing cruising with city and heritage site tours is Avalon Waterways’ From the Inca Empire to the Peruvian Amazon itinerary.

Sanctuary Sun Boat IV on the Nile (Sanctuary Retreats)

9. The Nile

One of the classic cruises, a journey along the Nile is a voyage back in time. You can marvel at 4,000 years of history, from ancient temples to royal tombs, with a luxurious river ship as a base. Most river cruise lines ply the stretch between Luxor and Aswan. Sights include the atmospheric temples of Karnak, Luxor, Philae and Kom Ombo, as well as the exquisitely painted tombs concealed under the surface of the dusty Valley of the Kings. One of the great pleasures of a Nile cruise, though, is simply taking in life along the river — the distant call to prayer, roosters crowing, water buffalo standing like statues in the shallows, and desert dunes that change colour as the sun crosses the sky.

How to do it Exodos’s Nile itinerary starts in Cairo and travels all the way down to Abu Simbel.

The church of San Michele in Isola, Venice (Getty Images)

10. The Po and the Venetian Lagoon

Using Venice ’s central San Basilio dock as a base, cruises on the misty Venetian Lagoon include visits to colour-popping islands, historic towns and Italy ’s culinary capital, Bologna. Cruises visit Murano island, famed for its glass-blowing workshops, and photogenic Burano, where houses are painted in shades from lime green to shocking pink. You’ll visit Venice itself, of course, where you can fawn over the greeny-blue canals and tranquil, hidden squares, as well as Piazza San Marco, the Palazzo Ducale and the Rialto Bridge.

How to do it The Venice and the Jewels of Veneto tour from Uniworld offers you the chance to take it easy in Italy.

A Viking Longship on the Rhine (Viking)

11. The Rhine

Europe ’s busiest waterway carves a course from Switzerland to the North Sea, through scenery ranging from the wooded hills of the Black Forest to the steep vineyards flanking the Rhine Gorge. The Rhine Valley is packed with historical wonders, from the glorious medieval centre of Strasbourg to the castles that guard every bend along the craggy gorge between Bingen and Koblenz. Further north, Cologne’s mighty cathedral beckons. Most voyages end in Amsterdam for a fitting dose of culture in its many museums and galleries. Cruises operate almost year-round on the Rhine, starting in late March and running until late November. December is Christmas market season — expect snow-dusted riverside towns busy with shoppers at spice-scented market stalls.

How to do it Try the Rhine Getaway cruise from Viking River Cruises, a castles and cathedrals itinerary that covers all the highlights.

Porto and the River Douro (Getty Images)

12. The Douro

Every Douro cruise is bookended by the lovely old cities of Porto in Portugal and, across the border in Spain , Salamanca with its ancient university. It makes for a river voyage that’s rich in culture. Through much of the Douro’s valley, vineyards follow the contours of sheer-sided hills, producing the port wine that the region is famous for. Beyond the old city of Porto, a jumble of baroque bell towers and improbably skinny 16th-century houses, highlights include the riverside town of Pinhao, with its intricately tiled railway station and futuristic Coa Museum, gateway to one of the world’s most important sites of palaeolithic rock art.

How to do it Scenic’s Delightful Douro itinerary is a round trip from Porto on a luxury small ship with a maximum of 96 passengers.

13. Dutch waterways

Cruises operate every spring through the network of rivers and canals criss-crossing the Netherlands and Belgium , with most passengers setting sail to gaze at the dazzling Dutch bulb fields in full bloom. Cruises start in Amsterdam, with its canals, museums and galleries, and stop in towns including the gorgeous, arty city of Antwerp, as well as Arnhem, Ghent and Rotterdam. Keukenhof Gardens in the Dutch town of Lisse, with some seven million flowers planted in intricate displays, is a highlight.

14. The Eastern Danube

The eastern stretch of the Danube, from Budapest to the marshy delta on the Black Sea, provides one of the most intriguing river cruises in Europe, visiting areas that until 30 years ago were largely closed to the outside world. Beyond Budapest, the Danube cuts across the Hungarian steppe before forcing its way through the rugged, 83-mile Iron Gates Gorge. Make time to see the dynamic Serbian capital, Belgrade, an energetic mix of brutalist apartment blocks and elegant belle époque mansions, as well as the Petrovaradin Fortress at Novi Sad. Belogradchik, near Vidin, is extraordinary; a wind-sculpted sandstone rock outcrop towering above a wooded plain, with the remnants of a Roman fortress clinging to the top. If you can, add a few days to your cruise in Transylvania, an enchanting landscape of jagged, cloud-draped mountains and dense forest.

How to do it Scenic’s Black Sea Explorer tour takes you from Budapest to Bucharest, with the option to include a trip to Transylvania.

The Tonle Sap in Cambodia (Alamy)

15. The Mekong

A cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam on the Mekong and its tributary, the Tonle Sap, is a fascinating insight into the culture, cuisine and history of Indochina. The highlights of a Mekong river cruise include arty Siem Reap and the extraordinary temples of Angkor Thum — and, in Vietnam, fast-paced Ho Chi Minh City, where sizzling street-food stalls and the legacy of the Vietnam War jostle for attention alongside futuristic skyscrapers. In Phnom Penh you’ll learn about the history of Cambodia under the dictator Pol Pot. In between, excursions range from visits to craft workshops, temples and riverside markets as rural life drifts by on the lush banks.

How to do it Pandaw’s Classic Mekong cruise offers a great introduction to the region and there’s no single supplement on selected sailings.

Creole Queen cruises along the Mississippi in New Orleans (Alamy)

16. The Mississippi

Sultry southern nights, spicy gumbo and jambalaya and the foot-tapping jazz bars of New Orleans are all part of a voyage on the mighty Mississippi. Stories of the Civil War, slavery and the birth of jazz unfold during a week-long voyage. You’ll see plantation houses, centuries-old oak trees, evocative war memorials and sugar cane rippling in the breeze. The region’s musical heritage creates a backdrop to any cruise, from the jazz clubs of New Orleans’ French Quarter to the atmospheric blues bars of Memphis. Shore excursions involve boating the bayous and swamps in search of alligators, taking the BB King trail, and a visit to the high-security Louisiana State Penitentiary.

How to do it Most ships sailing the Mississippi are ornate paddlewheelers, but Viking River Cruises’ Viking Mississippi, launched in 2022, brings a touch of Scandi-chic to the river.

Pauillac in the Gironde (Alamy)

17. The Garonne and Gironde

A voyage along the Garonne and out into the vast Gironde estuary passes rolling vineyards surrounding grand châteaux, with chances to sample the wares of the world’s most legendary wine-growing region in every port. Ships sail on a round-trip from Bordeaux, an elegant city sweeping around a half-moon curve of the Garonne. Top sights include the Miroir d’Eau, or water mirror, and the impressive La Cité du Vin wine museum, but waterfront bistros beckon too. During the cruise, château visits compete with opportunities for cycling through the vineyards, wandering around the massive citadel at Blaye and exploring gorgeous little towns such as Saint-Émilion and Pauillac.

Melnik in the Czech Republic (Alamy)

18. The Elbe

A voyage along the Elbe is a journey through the cultural and architectural history of eastern Germany and the Czech Republic. Cruise lines usually offer time before and after the voyage in two sharply contrasting cities: cosmopolitan Berlin and bohemian Prague. Cultural attractions come thick and fast on an Elbe voyage. Itineraries include the rococo Sanssouci, the summer residence of Frederick the Great in Potsdam, and the art deco marvels of Dessau. Venture into Wittenberg to explore the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation and visit the 1,000-year-old city of Meissen, famed for its porcelain. Or plump for Dresden and you’ll uncover the lavish Saxon crown jewels in the Royal Palace. A typical Elbe cruise ends in Melnik, although boats with a shallower draft can join the Vltava river and sail all the way into Prague.

How to do it Try the From Prague to Berlin itinerary from CroisiEurope, with the trip taking nine days.

10 Best River Cruises around the World

' src=

To many travelers, a cruise conjures up images of a huge ocean-going boat lumbering from one tropical island to another. However, there is another more intimate type of cruise that is just as popular with travelers today — the river cruise.

The boats for these cruises are typically much smaller than the behemoths that travel the sea and are the perfect platform for traveling by river from one interesting site or city to another. An overview of the best river cruises around the world:

10. Douro Cruise

Douro Cruise

The Douro River may not be as well known or as popular as some other European cruise destinations, but it’s not because it’s an unworthy destination. This wonderful little cruise, which takes travelers through Portugal and Spain, winds past picturesque vineyards and Medieval villages.

This cruise is especially perfect for anyone who loves to venture off the beaten track. A Douro River cruise trip itinerary normally starts at the river’s outlet in Porto and could include visits to local vineyards, castles and cathedrals.

9. Mississippi River Cruise

Mississippi River Cruise

The Mighty Mississippi, the fourth longest river in the world, cuts through the heart of America and through some of this country’s most beautiful scenery. Many of the ships that ply this river are designed to look like old-fashioned paddle-wheel steamboats, which can give a traveler the feeling that they are traveling back to a time when life was enjoyed at a more leisurely pace.

Depending on the itinerary, travelers on a Mississippi River cruise could float past quaint towns as well as major cities, such as St. Louis and Louisville . Again, depending on your itinerary, tour excursions could include visits to plantation homes as well as Battle of New Orleans battle sites. Cruises on the Mississippi can range from as little as a few hours to ones that last three weeks or even longer.

8. Kerala Backwaters Cruise

Kerala Backwaters Cruise

Travelers wanting to experience the beauty and charm of India’s backwaters should book a cruise through India’s amazing Kerala area.As they travel through this region’s canals and lovely lakes that form Kerala’s Backwaters, cruisers can enjoy living life like the locals.

The Kerala area boasts an unique ecosystem with fresh water from the rivers mixing with the saltwater from the Arabian Sea. Travelers can choose from several different types of boats in which to explore this area, including the famous kettuvallams that employ native oarsmen or motorized thatched-roof boats.

7. Volga River Cruise

Volga River Cruise

The Volga River is the longest in Europe and is often thought of as the national river of Russia. Depending on the itinerary, travelers on a Volga River cruise might visit St. Petersburg and Moscow or the Golden Ring cities. A trip down the Volga River is an excellent way for a traveler to experience both modern and old Russia. Again, depending on the itinerary, a Volga River cruise could offer excursions to the ballet, the circus or to visit one of Russia’s magnificent palaces.

6. Rhine River Cruise

Rhine River Cruise

It’s not surprising that a trip down the Rhine River is one of Europe’s most popular cruises. The Rhine River winds leisurely through a number of countries that are popular travel destinations, including Switzerland, France, Germany and Holland. Many consider the part between Koblenz to Bingen in Germany the most beautiful parts of the Rhine river.

Here travelers will enjoy some of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes and magnificent sites, including Medieval castles, lush vineyards and pass through picturesque towns that look like they came straight out of a fairy tale. Trips down the Rhine can be as short as a half day for those with limited time to multi-country itineraries that can last 11 days or even longer.

5. Mekong River Cruise

Mekong River Cruise

The Mekong River runs through China, Burma, Laos , Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. While cruising down the scenic Mekong, travelers will find an interesting blend of modern cities and floating villages from the past.

Depending on your itinerary, your cruise could include visits to such stunning sites as the ancient Angkor Watt temple complex in Cambodia or visits to floating villages and colorful markets of the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam. A Mekong River cruise is one of the best ways to experience and see the real Asia.

4. Danube River Cruise

Danube River Cruise

For many, a Danube River cruise is a dream come true. The Danube, which is the second longest river in Europe, passes through nine different countries, Austria, Bulgaria Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Romania Slovakia, Serbia and Ukraine.

Depending on the itinerary, which can last from one day to a week or longer, a trip along the majestic Danube River can take a traveler past castles and imposing fortresses and through some of Europe’s most beautiful cities. For example, some Danube river cruises visit three European capitals, Budapest in Hungary, Vienna in Austria, and Bratislava in Slovakia.

3. Yangtze River Cruise

Yangtze River Cruise

The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world as well as the longest in Asia. It travels past some of China’s most interesting and famous sites, including the stunning Three Gorges (Qutang, Wu and Xiling Gorge).

On a Yangtze River cruise, travelers will sail through some of this immense country’s most gorgeous landscapes and may also have the option of taking shore excursions to various interesting sites, including to ancient temples and old ghost towns. The Yangtze River is also home for a number of this country’s endangered species, including the Chinese alligator and river dolphin. Yangtze river cruise trip lengths typically run between four and thirteen days.

2. Amazon River Cruise

Amazon River Cruise

The wild and untamed Amazon River has long captivated explorers who have longed to discover the secrets hidden in the dense jungles that line its banks. In the past, only the most adventurous souls would have dared to enter the Amazon Basin, but, fortunately, this secretive world is much easier for travelers to visit today.

A number of cruise boats rove the Amazon. Accommodations on these boats range from modest to luxurious. Some boats feature cabins that even boast large picture windows so that travelers can view their surroundings from the comforts of their air-conditioned room.

Though the Amazon river spans eight South American countries, most larger vessels’ itineraries are limited to sections between the Brazilian ports of Manaus and Belém. Smaller cruise ships, however can also venture further upriver to Iquitos in Peru, incorporating stops in more undeveloped regions of the Peruvian Amazon.

1. River Nile Cruise

River Nile Cruise

Because Egypt basically grew up on the banks of the Nile, a cruise is one of the best ways to experience Egypt and all of its glorious ancient sites, including the pyramids and the Sphinx. It’s estimated that there are over 400 cruise ships plying the mighty Nile River, so travelers will have many vessels to choose from.

Some of these cruise ships offer such amenities as pools, sundecks and spas. Meals and some excursions are typically included in the cruise price. The average Nile River cruise lasts between three and seven days and travels between Luxor and Aswan.

The Best River Cruises In The World

River cruises are a more intimate and personal way to cruise, and these ones are providing views and multi-country travel.

International cruising might be on hold right now , but river cruises have been around for quite some time - far longer than the cruise lines we know today. These cruises often vary in length but provide a somewhat local and personal feel with an emphasis on exploring a new country rather than enjoying the luxuries aboard the ship. However, that doesn't mean these cruises aren't luxurious... or just for an older crowd.

Many river cruises today have been updated with modern amenities synonymous with what you would find on a luxury railway, and some have even more to offer than just cushy accommodations. Between the views and the comfort of these smaller ships, a river cruise can be a wonderful way to get away, without getting too far.

Northern Italy River Cruise

Uniworld offers a 10-day cruise that sails around Milan, Verona, Venice, Chioggia, and either Bologna or Ferrara before ending with a stop in the Venetian Islands and back to Venice. Touring Italy by ship allows passengers to explore many aspects of Italian culture, from art to food and architecture .

Cruising is a stress-free way to travel since it eliminates the need for public transportation between cities, and on this cruise, travelers have the chance to visit six of them. The rooms on this ship are elegant and classy, with classic design schemes and scenic river views right from the edge of the bed.

Eastern Europe River Cruise

Appropriately fitting, this Eastern Europe River Cruise can be taken aboard the Longship Aegir , which was named after the Norse god of the sea who shares the same name. This cruise goes between Bucharest and Budapest, and while taking the "Passage to Eastern Europe" tour, passengers will also have the chance to stop in Croatia and Hungary.

Half the excitement of this cruise is the ship itself, with floor to ceiling windows and staterooms that line the exterior of the ship, the views are 24/7. Along the 11-day journey, passengers will also sail right through Serbia's Iron Gates, which is an amazing experience from the water.

For those who have ever wanted to see the Eiffel Tower from a different vantage point, the "Grand France" cruise from Uniworld Boutique Cruise Collection is the way to go. Passengers will board the S.S. Joie de Vivre , which is considered to be a super ship in terms of river ship size.

This ship's Parisian decor and design are part of what makes it feel like such an authentic French experience - while passengers are taking in France's most amazing sights, history, and cuisine, they'll also be staying in accommodations that reflect it, as well.

Snake and Columbia Rivers Cruise

One of the world's best cruises can be found right in the US on the Snake and Columbia Rivers. This cruise, offered by American Cruise Lines, follows the theme of Lewis and Clark's adventures through America prior to its modern development.

Theatrics are a big part of this cruise, as there's an actor on board who tells tales of the pair's adventurous journeys. The ship departs from Portland, Oregon, and passengers have the chance to climb aboard the newest ship, American Song , which made its debut in 2019. Gorgeous mountain views and lake vistas make up this cruise's 8-day voyage .

river cruises

Riverboat cruising is a unique and enjoyable way to experience some of the world’s most beautiful and varied landscapes. From the lush green hills of Ireland to the tranquil canals of Venice, river cruises can take you to places you never thought possible. Cruising along a river provides you with an excellent opportunity to explore the local area and discover some of the hidden gems that can be found along the way.

Riverboats come in a variety of sizes, from small, intimate vessels to large, luxurious cruises for hundreds of passengers. The type of boat you select will depend on the size of your party and the kind of experience you’re looking for. Some vessels offer guided tours that provide an in-depth look at the area, while others provide independent, self-guided cruises with no set itinerary.

Riverboat cruises typically offer a variety of activities and amenities, such as spa treatments, onboard restaurants, and entertainment options. The trips can be as relaxing or as active as you wish, with plenty of opportunities to explore the local area, observe wildlife, or simply enjoy the scenery. No matter what you’re looking for, there is a riverboat cruise to suit every taste and budget.

These riverboat cruises offer a unique way to experience the world and create lasting memories. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway with your partner, a family holiday, or an adventurous solo trip, riverboat cruising is sure to provide an unforgettable experience.

Table of Contents

River Cruises

River cruises are one of the most popular and luxurious ways to explore the world’s waterways. Riverboat cruising is definitely different from ocean cruising. Not better or worse, just different. Many cruise lines offer seagoing cruises as well as river cruises.

From the mighty Amazon to the iconic Nile, there are many wonderful cruises to choose from. Here are some of the best river cruises available around the world:

1. Amazon River Cruise

The Amazon River is located in South America and is the second longest river in the world, after the Nile River. It flows through Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and several other countries, and its basin covers an area of over 7 million square kilometers. The Amazon River is known for its immense size and is home to many unique species of plants and animals, including the Amazon River dolphin, giant otter, and several species of monkeys and birds.

This cruise is ideal for those looking for a truly unique adventure. It offers a chance to explore the Amazon rainforest, spot wildlife, and learn about the cultures and traditions of the people living in the area.

There are several cruise lines that offer Amazon River cruises. We recommend Aqua Expeditions . The cruise will begin in Peru and is considered to be a small group excursion. With an experienced naturalist onboard, you will learn about and get a close look at the biodiversity of the Amazon River.

2. Nile River Cruises

Taking in some of the most iconic sights in Egypt, the Nile River Cruise is a perfect way to explore the ancient wonders of the area. It’s an ideal choice for history buffs and those looking to experience the majestic river in its entirety.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises offers Egypt River Cruises. If you travel on their ship, S. S. Spinx, you can choose one of their 42 staterooms, all with balconies. The ship, River Tosca, is twice as big but the passenger-to-staff ratio is almost 1:1. Whichever ship you decide to book, your cruise will be a culturally enriching adventure.

Viking Cruise Lines also cruises the Nile River. It is often considered a luxury cruise line because of its focus on immersive experiences, high-end amenities, and personalized service. You can appreciate the civilization that emerged along the banks of the Nile River as you cruise to and from Cairo. Experts in the history of the region will lead you from the pyramids to the temples of Luxor, and onto the desert outposts along the Nile.

3. Danube River Cruises

One of the most popular river cruises in Europe, the Danube River Cruise offers a chance to explore charming cities and stunning scenery. The Danube is truly the heart and soul of Central Europe. Highlights of the Danube River cruise can include the Iron Gate, Belgrade, Bratislava, Vienna, and more. Check out each cruise before booking as each cruise will stop at different ports.

Viking Cruise Lines is a popular choice for Danube cruises. With their destination-focused itineraries, Viking emphasizes cultural immersion and enrichment, with tours that highlight the history, cuisine, and traditions of the regions visited. There is too much to see and do as the waters of the Danube flow through 10 countries.

Uniworld also offers Danube River cruises. Their ships have local experts so you will get firsthand information on all of the grand experiences you should not miss. It is a high-end luxury line and is considered to be an old-world luxury in a modern setting.

Ama Waterways gives you many choices for Danube River Cruising. There are no “babies” allowed on the cruise under the age of 4 and some of the cruises are not available for anyone under the age of 12. In addition, some of their cruises are themed “adventures by Disney”.

This cruise line is also known for small groups. The maximum number of passengers on their ship, Ama Magna, is 196 with only 98 staterooms. This luxury cruise has spacious suites from 355 to 710 sq feet. Quite a difference from a large ocean cruise ship. It has all of the amenities you expect and want on a cruise.

Avalon Waterways is another cruise line that has small ships. The average number of passengers per ship is approximately 150 guests. However, their newest ship, The Avalon View, will sleep 166 guests in a total of 83 staterooms. Avalon Waterways touts itself as a “floating boutique hotel.”

4. Yangtze River Cruises

The Yangtze River is the longest river in China and the third-longest in the world. It runs from the glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau in the west, through the provinces of Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Hubei before emptying into the East China Sea near Shanghai.

Cruising along the Yangtze River is one of the most popular tourist activities in China. There are dozens of stunning attractions along its banks, from the stunning, Three Gorges, to the picturesque bamboo forests of Leifeng. You can enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains and landscapes of the surrounding area. Visitors may also take part in cultural activities such as tai chi, tea tasting, and calligraphy. A cruise along the Yangtze River is a great way to experience traditional Chinese culture.

5. Mekong River Cruises

The Mekong River is one of the world’s most majestic waterways, winding its way through six countries in Southeast Asia. It is home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and exotic cultures.

For travelers looking for a unique adventure, a Mekong River cruise is an ideal way to explore the region. Along the way, you can discover the bustling markets of My Tho in Vietnam, explore the ancient temples of Cambodia, and admire the spectacular limestone mountains of Laos. During your cruise, you will be able to sample the diverse cuisine, learn about the local lifestyles, and take part in exciting activities like swimming and kayaking.

The Mekong River is also home to some of the most fascinating wildlife in the world, including the Irrawaddy dolphins and the rare Mekong giant catfish. A cruise along the river will give you the opportunity to spot these rare and amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

A Mekong River cruise is an exciting and unforgettable journey that will leave you with a richer understanding of the cultures and people of Southeast Asia. There is something for everyone on this amazing river cruise.

Viking Cruise Lines offers a 15-day cruise from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. You will enjoy the beautiful scenery as you travel through Asia. There are an array of activities and attractions to explore during the cruise.

Avalon Waterways offers a unique experience for travelers cruising the Mekong River. There are many advantages to taking a cruise on the Mekong with Avalon, from the small boats with modern accommodations to the guided excursions. You can relax around the pool or enjoy the spa. The local wildlife including the monkeys and the birds are amazing.

In Conclusion

These are just some of the best river cruises available around the world. Every river cruise offers something unique, so it’s important to do the proper cruise planning before choosing the right one for you.

Viking River Cruises

Viking cruise ship under a bridge on the Mississippi River.

Courtesy of Viking

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Length: Eight days Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.

6 reasons why a luxury river cruise is the best way to taste the flavours of Bordeaux

Delicious fine dining, charming scenery and the world’s best wines await

a boat on the water

And while Paris might be France's most famous spot, we think Bordeaux makes a very compelling case as one of the country's best city break destinations , especially when it's experienced from the sybaritic luxury of a sleek river cruising ship.

Located in south-west France, the region is just a short flight from the UK. Warm summers and mild winters, as well as the sandy, gravelly soil, create the perfect terroir (conditions) for vines. This is why Bordeaux is home to many of the best-known wine producers in the world: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Margaux, to name but a few.

Three major rivers run through this famous region, and where the Dordogne and the Garonne meet, they form the Gironde estuary. This body of water lends itself particularly well to a river cruise, so that’s where we embarked on our seven-night sailing adventure.

We stepped aboard the five-star Scenic Diamond in the historic centre of Bordeaux at Port de La Lune, before heading to the Left Bank moorings at Fort Médoc and Cadillac, and the Right Bank towns of Libourne, Bourg and Blaye. Punctuated by charming medieval towns and endless vineyards, this route was the perfect way to explore Bordeaux.

As for when to visit, early September is particularly pleasant, when the heat gives way to a milder climate (ideal for touring wineries) with grapes hanging plump on the vines and the excitement of the impending harvest filling the air. That said, the summer months are blissful here too, and from May to October the days tend to be long, warm and sunny.

Read on to discover why a river cruise on Scenic Diamond is the best way to discover Bordeaux…

Taste incredible wines

bordeaux vineyards, france

The city of Bordeaux is vibrant, the countryside is idyllic and there’s even an impressive rugby team but, let’s be honest, the highlight of any visit is likely to be the wine. For oenophiles and casual drinkers alike, Bordeaux is one of the greatest regions in the world.

On this cruise, each new mooring opens up easy access to nearby appellations and during tours and tastings (all included in the price), the vineyards will let you into their world and share their secrets. In a region with some seven thousand wineries, we learned about the difference between Left Bank and Right Bank, the five (occasionally six) grape varieties that can go into a Bordeaux blend, and the historic Grand Cru Classé classification.

Stay in a floating five-star hotel

scenic diamond pool

River cruising has come a long way since its introduction in the late 1960s and Scenic Diamond is a trailblazer in the world of luxury cruising. This ‘Space-Ship’ is the smart way to discover the city, its vineyards and the estuary – and all with the comfort and style of a great five-star hotel.

Our Balcony Suite on the Diamond Deck was unexpectedly spacious and elegantly furnished. We loved the full-length window and outdoor balcony with a nifty glass panel to open or close depending on the weather. We watched the appellations float by (corny but that’s what you do on a river cruise) with a morning coffee or glass of chardonnay cheerily delivered by our stateroom’s butler.

On board, there’s a wellness space, a hot tub on the sun deck and nightly entertainment in the swanky Panorama Lounge and Bar. One evening we were joined by Jérémy Dupouy, a street singer who was invited on board by the captain seven years ago and has now become a regular fixture serving up classic hits by The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Simon and Garfunkel.

Get under the (grape) skin of the region with local guides

a city with many buildings

Scenic’s included excursions will take you on a carefully planned journey through the region’s wineries. You’ll explore everything from the cobbled medieval streets of Saint-Émilion and the traditional Château Siaurac, to the boutique 82-hectare Château Gruaud Larose, with its high-tech tower and black box that can evaporate clouds to prevent hail from destroying the vines.

A highlight of the week was our visit to Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, a winery owned by luxury glassmaker Lalique, which is famed for producing exceptional sweet Sauternes wines. It also has a two Michelin-starred restaurant and is home to the world’s only full-size crystal wine barrel. It takes a day or two to get used to tasting wine after breakfast, but you’ll certainly get into the swing of things as the local guides bring it all to life.

Enjoy exquisite fine dining and classic dishes

scenic diamond table la rive

Hats (or berets) off to Executive Chef Julian Grigore and his team – the all-inclusive food on Scenic Diamond is among the finest served on river ships. The elegant Crystal Dining Room is the main space for all meals, with the River Cafe offering daytime snacks and lighter lunches.

Meanwhile, French restaurant L’Amour serves a delicious tasting menu with accompanying fine wine by invitation. Our culinary highlight happened mid-week; the duck breast and duck leg confit à l’orange with a red cabbage spring roll and sautéed vegetables was truly a triumph.

But it's not all about eating on Scenic Diamond – you’ll also get to pick up some cooking tips. We booked a class at the intimate Scenic Culinaire, where the chef demonstrated how to make the perfect coq au vin. With walnut oil, chanterelle mushrooms and veal stock on the shopping list, the recipe is tucked away ready to impress house guests.

On our final afternoon, back at Port de La Lune, guests got to taste delicate oysters from Bassin d'Arcachon, which are harvested on the sun-drenched coast to the west and washed down with a zesty glass of Crémant De Loire, a fine sparkling wine.

Moor up and go off-piste in pretty French towns

scenic diamond, bordeaux, france

Although tempted to join every excursion on offer, or enjoy the ship’s excellent facilities, we chose to explore the small Right Bank town of Blaye ourselves. The Citadel is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This military complex has ramparts to explore, village streets and stunning estuary views. Back down in the town we visited a mid-week market, watched French life pass us by with a Café au lait and had an impromptu tasting of Merlot-dominant reds at the fabulous La Petite Cave – all before lunch.

Bordeaux is the French city that has it all

dcim\100media\dji0563jpg

Move over Paris! We found Bordeaux easier to navigate and with a milder climate, we think it’s the perfect French city to explore year-round. Moored centrally at Port de La Lune, join one of Scenic’s excursions or borrow an e-bike to see the city at your own pace. With art galleries, museums, shopping streets and riverside walks you can make a stay in Bordeaux your own.

On our Cruise Director’s recommendation, we made our way to Les Bassins des Lumières for an immersive art exhibition of the works of Salvador Dali. This spine-tingling experience takes place in a WWII submarine base and is set to the music of Pink Floyd. Back on theme, we visited La Cité du Vin, an interactive museum of wine in an impressive building inspired by the swirl of wine in a glass.

7 Reasons A Stay On The World’s Largest Steamboat Is My Favorite U.S. Cruise

riverboat cruises in the world

 • Cruises and Sailing
 • River Cruises
 • Types of Travel

I have been on several cruises and travel adventures around the world, but recently, I’ve felt the need to focus on discovering great destinations closer to home. The U.S. is filled with countless experiences that travelers can unlock, and a river cruise offers the chance to see so many things in an efficient, hassle-free, and fun way.

Our summer cruise on the Ohio River took us from Pittsburgh to Louisville, and the itinerary included stops in Marietta, Ohio; Huntington, West Virginia; Augusta, Kentucky; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Madison, Indiana, before reaching Louisville.

I had been on voyages on the Mighty Mississippi River and even a couple in the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake rivers that traverse through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. These itineraries are fairly well known, but I was fascinated to see what an Ohio River cruise was all about. I was happy to accept an invite from American Queen Voyages to review this special itinerary.

As it turns out, it’s filled with memorable experiences and a range of fun ways to spend your days. The best part about our trip, though, was how we got there. American Queen owns a special charm and an incredible river cruise program that makes it a favorite way to cruise within the U.S. Here’s why.

The American Queen in Madison, Indiana

1. An Itinerary With Small Towns And Big Cities

Pittsburg, pennsylvania.

American Queen Voyages offers a pre-cruise hotel stay in Pittsburgh, and it was nice to explore the City of Bridges for a day. We had lunch at the famous Primanti Brothers, diving into our hearty sandwiches — complete with fries stuffed onto the pastrami between slices of Italian bread. And we washed it down with a couple of Iron City beers.

The embarkation pier for the riverboat sits at the doorstep of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ football stadium, making for a scenic sail away from the confluence of the three rivers (Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela).

Cincinnati, Ohio

The cruise also features a stop in Cincinnati and wraps up in Louisville, so travelers have opportunities to explore these interesting big cities and all they have to offer. We went for a bike ride on the riverfront, explored the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, and had lunch and craft beers at Moerlein Lager House.

Louisville, Kentucky

In Louisville, cruisers can explore city highlights like the famed Churchill Downs (Kentucky Derby track) or the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory before catching flights back home.

These big cities are nice, but it’s the small towns that really make this trip shine. Residents gather along the banks of the river to cheer our arrival or give us a friendly sendoff each day. Each riverside destination, no matter how small, loves to show off its slice of American history and regional attractions, such as quirky museums, pretty churches, and, of course, its local shops and eateries.

Marietta, Ohio

In Marietta, Ohio, attractions included Mound Cemetery, one of the oldest in the original Northwest Territory, the Ohio River Museum, and the Childen’s Toy & Doll Museum.

Huntington, West Virginia

When I went ashore in Huntington, West Virginia, the hop-on, hop-off bus loop took us to the Touma Medical Museum, a delightful little open-air railroad museum (a yard filled with colorful old rail cars), Ritter Park Rose Garden, and the Marshall University Campus, which features a wonderful grounds filled with statues, sculptures, trees, and flowers.

Augusta, Kentucky

In Augusta, Kentucky, AQV passengers were able to walk just a few hundred steps from our spot on the river to explore the Rosemary Clooney Museum. This is the former home of actress, singer, and aunt to superstar George Clooney. Highlights of this charming town also include Bates Garden, the 1811 Jail, and Baker-Bird Winery.

Madison, Indiana

There was another railroad museum to see in Madison, Indiana, and the town also lists the Schroeder Saddletree Factory, the Broadway Fountain, and Lanier Mansion as top attractions for visitors to check out.

The Grand Ballroom of the American Queen

2. Enriching Entertainment

While each port stop features a variety of things for cruisers to explore, this fancy riverboat offers a daily program with a mix of musical performances, trivia competitions, movies, bingo, and variety shows.

Music, trivia, and enrichment talks are held in American Queen’s majestic Grand Saloon theater space. During our cruise, we saw Phil Westbrook several times, as the singer and piano man performed a tribute to Frank Sinatra as well as entertained passengers at the intimate Captain’s Bar just outside the main J.M. White Dining Room.

We also dropped by the theater for shows by guitarist Logan Reeves and a song and dance variety production on TV theme songs from the American Queen Ensemble and the Steamboat Syncopators house band. The shows draw on plenty of nostalgia but definitely favor an era more familiar to cruisers 70 and older. However, the overall mood is quite fun.

A hip vibe can be found nightly at the Engine Room Bar, where the ship’s musicians get the crowd dancing with a great mix of blues and rock tunes.

Fresh pastries on the American Queen

3. Regionally Inspired Cuisine

The American Queen chefs kept us well-fed. Meals are served in the main dining room and in the casual eatery called the Front Porch, which offers wonderful views as you cruise on the river. When the weather is nice, it’s worth having at least one dinner outside there to enjoy the sunset and sailing.

The menu includes items like chicken fried steak, frog legs, and a variety of steak and fish preparations. The cuisine is more hearty than healthy, but you can find some fresh fruits and salads in the mix at the lunch buffets. We were always tempted by the mouth-watering selection of homemade pies and slices of chocolate cake set out each day at lunch. There always is a delicious soup, gumbo, or chili available, too.

If you need a snack, you can swing by the Front Porch for a bag of fresh popcorn, a couple of cookies, or a soft-serve ice cream cone or dish.

4. Set Your Own Pace

As a person who loves his daily workouts, I’m happy that a river cruise on American Queen makes it easy. Not only is there a well-equipped gym, but the ship carries a fleet of bikes. Colleen and I started several days with a run along the riverside trails through small towns or by grabbing a couple of bikes to go exploring independently.

In general, river cruising allows travelers the chance to explore on their own in a hassle-free way. It’s so easy to stroll onto and off of the ship at your leisure, and the towns and cities are mere steps away. You can go set your own schedule for the day if you’re not interested in rigorously following the ship excursion program.

Pro Tip: Ask crew members for their insight on nice places to eat or go shopping — or for their favorite places to get a coffee or craft brew. We received great insight from lead butler Adam, who is a coffee connoisseur and loves to find and frequent local cafes along all the river towns he visits.

5. Hop-On, Hop-Off Tours

American Queen Voyages provides a wonderful service in its hop-on, hop-off bus routes in each city and on each river itinerary that it operates. Passengers walk off the ship and straight onto waiting buses with clear signage at each stop along the route at the attractions in town.

Cruisers love being able to have peace of mind that they will see a nice mix of highlights in each port without worrying about transportation. You can get off at each spot or pick and choose what you are interested in on the loop.

Deck chairs on the American Queen

6. Plenty Of Space Onboard

American Queen itself is an attraction. Built in 2012 and carrying up to 417 passengers, this is the largest steamship ever built. The décor takes you back in time to a golden era of steamship travel. The Grand Saloon resembles a 19th-century opera house with private boxes wrapped around the theater and hanging over the main level and the stage adorned with a large red curtain.

Chandeliers fill the main restaurant, rocking chairs line the railings on the front porch, and gingerbread ornamentation accents the staircases and stateroom patios of the bright white ship. The signature big red paddlewheel churns at the stern of the ship helping to power the voyage along the river.

American Queen features a large Mark Twain Gallery that serves as a reading room (with a small computer area). It’s outfitted with vintage lamps and antique chairs and all kinds of mementos of a bygone time, including river ship models, paintings, books, vases, and other collectibles.

There are two parlors at the very front of the ship ahead of the Main Twain Gallery, and these spots also are carefully decorated and ideal for working on puzzles, reading, or enjoying the river views while relaxing with friends.

7. Scenic Sailing

I found the periods of sailing from town to town one of the most relaxing and satisfying parts of this river cruise. It was fabulous to watch the world floating by, with the pretty evening sunsets, flowing waters, and subtle bends in the river. We would pass under a variety of bridge styles and see trains on adjacent tracks and tugboats pushing coal barges.

Cruisers also enjoyed the process of watching our big riverboat pass through the locks along the way.

Pro Tip: Make sure to head up to the top deck for sail aways each day. Crowds gather along the banks of the river to wave you off and wish you well on the journey. And one of the musicians will come out to play some tunes on the boat’s steam calliope. It’s a fun spectacle!

If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? For example, combine a sail along the Douro, which cuts across Spain and Portugal and finishes at the Atlantic coast, with an ocean-going cruise sailing out of Porto. Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises , which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.

Most ocean-going cruise lines launch one or two ships a year. River cruise ships, however, take to the water much more regularly. Viking River Cruises doesn’t just lay claim to the biggest fleet (80 river cruising ships), but also the Guinness World Record for inaugurating the most new ships in a single day (14, if you were wondering).

Riverside Luxury Cruises is the new kid on the block

This new line launched with one ship – Riverside Mozart – and offers cruises starting in Vienna, Budapest and Passau. The ship’s rooftop bar looks pretty special, although we’re equally excited about the cuisine, inspired by regions the ship sails through.

Keen to sail along Europe’s most famous rivers but not so keen on crowds? Choose a river cruise that goes well beyond the cities on the itinerary, and you’ll be richly rewarded. For example, opt for one of the cruises that travels past Budapest to the Black Sea’s spectacular marshy delta, or along the more remote stretches of Germany’s often-overlooked Main River.

Even the busiest rivers have quiet spots

Unlike on ocean-going cruises, you won’t need binoculars to appreciate the scenery. Sign up for an American river cruise and you can sail through vast bayous, past skyscraper-filled cities and along ocean-wide stretches of the Mississippi during a single sailing, while in Europe, Germany’s UNESCO-listed castles can be easily combined with Prague’s bohemian masterpieces.

The landscape is fabulously diverse

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. Most river cruises are truly all-inclusive

We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.

To start with, there are no ocean waves and currents to rock the boat. Additionally, fewer decks means less chance of feeling any movement – you’ll be closer to the hull of the ship (the part which moves least) and river cruising ships’ low-slung design means there’s minimal sway anyway. In summary? You can spend your time planning your excursions and activities rather than poring over ship plans in order to bag a cabin in the most stable spot.

You’re unlikely to feel seasick on a river cruise

River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

Amazing facts about cruise ships you might not know

River cruises will take you to the end of the world (almost)

CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.

The Nile is 4,132 miles (6,650km) long. To put that into perspective, if you drove from John O’Groats to Land’s End (the entire length of Britain) you’d cover just 840 miles (1,352km). We recommend Viking’s Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise, which starts and finishes in Cairo and takes in Luxor’s Karnak Temple complex, the Necropolis of Thebes and the beautiful Philae temple complex (pictured), which is surrounded by water.

You can cruise the world’s longest river

There are no interior cabins on river cruise ships – all cabins face outwards and most have floor-to-ceiling windows. Cruise lines make the most of the space in innovative ways, too. On several Uniworld vessels, for example, mirrors are actually concealed televisions. The cabins at the rear of riverboats are often the cheapest – but if you’re a light sleeper, remember that this is because the engines are located here.

One example is Amadeus River Cruises. We’re seeing more river cruise lines offer a complimentary night in a hotel prior to setting sail, along with further opportunities to explore the embarkation and disembarkation destinations. Expect more river cruise companies to offer add-ons such as three-day city packages of Amsterdam (pictured) prior to sailings along the Rhine, or wine-themed mini-breaks prior to Loire sailings.

The added extras are getting better

We’re increasingly keen to avoid crowds, and river cruises have cottoned on to this. They’re going all out to offer cruises year-round – not just during the summer (traditionally the busiest time for river cruises), but in April and May and September and October, when there will be fewer selfie sticks and thinner crowds to contend with. Pictured is Bratislava Castle rising above the Danube River in fall.

It's easier to avoid the crowds

On ocean cruises, the excitement about seeing the local landmark/record-breaking attraction/ancient site quickly dissipates when there’s a one-hour bus journey between you and the site in question. Not so with river cruising, simply because of the increased accessibility. A great example is the iconic arch in St Louis, Missouri (pictured) – this feat of engineering is just a 10-minute walk from the dock used by river boats.

Now check out the world's oldest man-made structures still in use today

Explore America’s Most Iconic Waterways With the 5 Best U.S. River Cruises

Discover natural and cultural treasures close to home.

riverboat cruises in the world

You don't need to fly to Europe for a river cruise, with new ships and routes creating even more options right here in the United States. Some of the most scenic itineraries traverse the Mississippi, Hudson, Columbia, and Snake rivers, showcasing natural, cultural, and historical attractions along the way. Passengers can visit wineries in Washington, taste Creole cuisine in New Orleans, or learn about the Siege of Vicksburg right where it happened.

On these voyages, you'll sail with anywhere from 100 to 400 other guests aboard either modern riverboats or classic paddle wheelers that hearken back to a different time. Like their European counterparts, river cruises in the U.S. typically package everything at a single price, including staterooms, meals, guest lectures and enrichment programs, entertainment, and most shore excursions. Some even include pre-cruise hotel stays.

Here are five river cruises that will show you the U.S. in a whole new light.

American Cruise Lines’ Music Cities Cruise from Memphis to Nashville

It's hard to choose from American Cruise Lines' 35 itineraries. For arts and culture lovers, the eight-day Music Cities Cruise along the Mississippi, Ohio, and Cumberland rivers presents an opportunity to visit several charming cities and towns in the South. The itinerary is offered on four different 180-passenger ships, including the American Serenade and the classic American Splendor paddle wheeler.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The voyage begins in Memphis, where passengers can visit the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, take in a show at one of the nightclubs along legendary Beale Street, or tour Elvis Presley's mansion, Graceland. After a day of cruising, the ship stops at Paducah, Kentucky, where you can admire the more than 50 murals on the floodwall along Water Street before exploring the National Quilt Museum. The next day, the ship travels through the Barkley Lock and past the stunning coves and limestone bluffs of the Cumberland River's Lake Barkley– a view best enjoyed from the balcony of your stateroom. In Dover, Tennessee, guests visit historic Fort Donelson National Park and learn about the garrison's role during the Civil War. The next day, passengers can tour the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center and Fort Defiance in Clarksville, Tennessee, and cap off the experience with a whiskey tasting at Old Glory Distilling Co. The voyage ends in Nashville, where you can stroll along historic Lower Broadway, visit museums dedicated to Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, and take in a Grand Ole Opry show.

American Queen Voyages' Upper Mississippi Cruise from St. Louis to Minneapolis

History buffs will love this nine-day cruise along the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers aboard American Queen Voyages' 245-passenger American Countess paddle wheeler. The itinerary offers guests a chance to explore the idyllic river towns that inspired the Father of American Literature.

After departing St. Louis, the cruise arrives in Alton, Illinois, where guests can play golf on championship courses, explore the National Great Rivers Museum , or just stroll around the town's historic districts. Day three brings passengers further upriver to Mark Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri, from which the author drew inspiration for several of his novels. On day four, the ship stops at Bettendorf, Iowa, for a hop-on hop-off tour of museums, artist studios, the German American Heritage Center , and the Quad City Botanical Center . In Dubuque, Iowa, guests can take a ride on the Fenelon Place Elevator, billed as "the world's steepest, shortest scenic railway". Day nine, finds the the ship at La Crosse, Wisconsin, famous for its rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas. The final port is Red Wing, Minnesota, home to beautifully preserved artisan workshops, factories, and pioneer-era architecture. After disembarking, passengers can explore nearby Minneapolis before going home.

American Cruise Lines’ Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

This eight-day fall foliage-themed cruise takes leaf peeping to a new level. The round-trip voyage out of New York City takes nature lovers through the heart of the Hudson Valley – swathed every fall in a blanket of bright orange, red, and yellow. Whether you sail on the classic 48-stateroom American Star or the 100-passenger American Eagle , you'll enjoy a stunning display of colors from the comfort of your balcony. On shore, you’ll have the opportunity to hike to the highest waterfall in the Empire State , walk across the longest pedestrian bridge in the world , and visit the homes of Franklin D. Roosevelt in Hyde Park and author Washington Irving in Sleepy Hollow.

Viking Cruises’ New Orleans & Southern Charms Lower Mississippi Cruise

This eight-day round-trip cruise takes in historic estates, military sites, and comunities bursting with Cajun and Creole culture. After departing New Orleans, the Viking Mississippi stops in the Louisiana towns of Darrow and St. Francisville, which boast Greek Revival mansions, Spanish moss-draped avenues, and even a haunted house . Day four brings travelers to the oldest city on the river, Natchez, Mississippi, home to a rich African American heritage . The next day, guests can learn about one of the most consequential battles of the Civil War at Vicksburg National Military Park before setting sail for the vibrant capital city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The ship then returns to New Orleans, where guests can stay longer or catch a flight home.

UnCruise Adventures’ Rivers of Adventure & Wine Columbia and Snake River Cruise

Spotting wildlife and sipping wine go hand-in-hand on this UnCruise Adventures expedition around the Pacific Northwest. The seven-night round-trip journey from Portland isn't your typical leisure cruise. Instead, passengers get to go on rainforest hikes, rafting adventures, winery visits, and scenic kayaking excursions through dramatic canyons.

After the champagne departure from Portland and a stop at Astoria, Oregon, the ship passes through the Columbia River Gorge. Passengers can disembark for a guided hike, then return for a wine tasting with the ship's sommelier. The gourmand adventures continue with an excursion to Walla Walla, Washington, which includes visits to olive oil makers, chocolatiers, and family-owned wine cellars. Day five begins at the mouth of the Palouse River, where guests can kayak or paddleboard. The next day, passengers can visit Columbia Hills State Park and Rowena Plateau on foot or by skiff boat while enjoying river dips, farm-to-fork delights, and a wine tour and tasting. Guests then disembark at The Dalles, Oregon, for whitewater rafting or a relaxing winery tour. The adventure ends with a farewell dinner back at Portland.
