I did the IYT Interior course with Berna and it was so informative. Berna is still extremely passionate about the yachting industry and taught us absolutely everything we need to know. She really went above and beyond. Came out of the course feeling so much more confident. Would highly recommend doing this course to anyone starting out in yachting.

Done my coxswain through super yacht crew academy and I first I thought this school was really great until it started getting towards the end of my course and I started to notice the teachers losing interest in our group as another group had started so they were juggling both. Eventually I was told that I had finished my course but then a few weeks later got called in to say I had more to complete, I went in and then got told again that was it and I was finished, few months went buy and I sent them an email asking when I was gunna receive my certificate and if I had actually fully finished the course as the way it ended seemed strange as I just got never contacted again. All that work and effort and money to just be not responded to is pretty disappointing!

NOT AMSA APPROVED OR RECOGNISED!!! It is very important to note that the STCW training provided by Superyacht Crew Academy is NOT recognised in Australia by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. Whilst it can help you with a career in some countries outside of Australia, it is not recognised within Australia, rendering it more or less useless if you want a career here. I have just lost a great position within a company in Australia because my STCW certification is not valid. I can't understand why a training organisation in Australia would offer certification that isn't valid within it's own borders. Please consider this before enrolling with this organisation. When I explained the situation to them, and with them having known full well that I've come from the construction industry with no prior knowledge of the maritime industry, I was offered no compensation, instead I was told that I knew what I was signing up for which clearly I did not. I feel in my personal opinion that I was taken advantage of and after speaking to some of my other classmates I have confirmed that they were not aware either. Now we need to pay for and sit this course again with an AMSA approved rto to get our certifications recognised. On a side note, when we questioned why we hadn't received our LONG RANGE OPERATOR CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY (LROCP) 6 months down the track, we were informed that the exams hadn't even been submitted to the Australian Maritime College and I personally had to make my way back down to Sydney to sit the exam for the second time.

SCA was excellent from registration through to wrapping up 2 and a half weeks of hands-on courses. The breadth of experience the instructors shared with the classes throughout the STCW, Deckhand and Powerboat courses was honest and realistically portrayed the industry and what to expect as a newcomer. Very much worth the cost for the practical experience gained from ex crew members themselves. Thanks team!

Really enjoyed the training, it was of the highest standard and very realistic! I recommend spending the extra money and doing the additional training ( deckhand and stew courses) as you learn so much more. Stuart and the entire team went above and beyond even allowing me and a few of the other deckhands to get some additional hours onboard the tenders after the course was completed. Within a day after the course I had day work and within a week had a job on board a yacht and had advice through the entire process.

Stuart went above and beyond to help me with my CV, knowledge and even gave me a few connections to find work over in Antibes! I'll be back for my Master of Yachts for sure!!!

STCW Basic Safety Training in Australia

The following list is a selection of institutions offering STCW-compliant courses in Australia:

*Note that if taking the STCW training in Australia, you have a choice to enroll in an AMSA-endorsed or an MCA-endorsed BST course. An AMSA-endorsed STCW certificate is internationally recognized on both Australian and foreign-flagged yachts. Those holding an MCA-endorsed ticket can only obtain work on a foreign-flagged yacht, so this could decrease an individual’s chances of employment, because the schools and placement agents cannot put these candidates forward for jobs on superyachts within Australia. Please be sure to do your own research into this when choosing a school for STCW Basic Safety Training in Australia.

Tributes flow at funeral of Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon after death in parachute training tragedy

Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon has been remembered as a "modest" and "compassionate" person with an infectious sense of humour during a funeral service in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.

The 33-year-old died after being injured in a parachute training incident at the Richmond RAAF base in Sydney on March 6.

He is the son of former defence minister and Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon, who served 26 years in federal parliament.

The casket of Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon is carried on a gun carriage during his funeral march 18 2024

Hundreds of people, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, attended Lance Corporal Fitzgibbon's funeral at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Cessnock on Monday.

Defence personnel, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and Minister for Defence Richard Marles were also among the mourners who packed the church.

The lance corporal's family, including his father, were emotional as the service got underway.

Joel Fitzgibbons in church

In a pre-recorded speech played during the service, Joel Fitzgibbon reflected on the night he found out his son had died.

"March 6 was the worst day of my life, our hearts broke that night," he said.

"We took great comfort from the fact that Jack died doing something he loved and in service to his country.

"We are so very proud of him."

Tributes flow

Lieutenant Colonel "G" said Lance Corporal Fitzgibbon was a "no fuss kind of person" who "shied away from drawing attention to himself".

"As a special forces communicator, Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon was an enigma," he said.

"Confident yet modest, charismatic yet humble, compassionate yet ruthless.

"He was a larrikin and a professional, he was a soldier."

Family crying outside church

The lance corporal's mother, Dianne Fitzgibbon, said in a pre-recorded message that she "never gave up hope" while her son was in intensive care following the training incident.

"They were to prove the worst two days of my life," she said.

"Jack, there is nothing like a mother's love and I will love you and miss you with all my heart until the day I die."

Politicians offer support

Local and federal politicians also paid tribute to the soldier, and offered support to the Fitzgibbon family ahead of the service.

Anthony ALbanese hugs another man

"It's just the worst thing that any parent can imagine, so our hearts go out to Joel and Dianne and their family — and the friends and comrades that Jack had in the service," Federal Cabinet Minister Tanya Plibersek told Channel Seven.

"We know that there'll be a lot of people grieving today."

Joel Fitzgibbon's successor as Member for the Hunter, Dan Repacholi, extended his thoughts to all soldiers currently serving.

"Jack did what many people don't do for this country, he served as a soldier," he said.

"This just shows how dangerous being a soldier can be."

The training exercise has been halted since the Lance Corporal's death and Defence has initiated a formal investigation.

Yacht Chef Training Course

Adapt your culinary talents to a Superyacht environment. Successful completion of this course will allow you to work as a chef on superyachts of any size anywhere in the world.

Chefs aboard Superyachts will be cooking for a very exclusive and sophisticated table. Formal training & qualification is essential, not only as a chef, but also as a member of a superyacht crew. A chef aboard a superyacht is more challenging than being a chef in land-based kitchens. It requires an aptitude for learning new produce, concepts & culinary variety.

A yacht chef must work alone unless fortunate enough to have a galley chef or sous chef onboard. Generally the chef is the source of the entire crews state of culinary satisfaction and contentedness…. as well as the owners, of course.

Yachting etiquette, hygiene and galley sanitation are essential elements of the chef superyacht training process. Provisioning is also vital be it in remote island areas where produce & some supplies are virtually impossible to procure or in a new country where ingredients are very different and come in packages that are unintelligible or unrecognisable.

A superyacht chef needs to be flexible, adaptable, creative, easy going & love the sea…and the motion that comes with it whilst under passage! The chef’s understanding of the dietary needs, allergies & alternative eating habits of the crew, owners, and guests are of primary importance to a happy vessel.

Chef’s Introduction to Superyachts

Superyacht Chef’s Introduction to Yachting is a short course for chefs and cooks with existing restaurant and hotel backgrounds. The course will give you detailed training to adapt your culinary skills to chef/steward/ess positions on superyachts.

Whether you are a Chef on a large, high profile yacht or a cook on a smaller, less-formal yacht, you will need special skills for galley management, and menu planning, including preparation and planning for extended cruises, finding and buying supplies in foreign countries where the foods, labels and spoken language may present challenges, storing the supplies in the limited space available, and confidently preparing meals while at sea.

The Superyacht Crew Academy instructors will show you how to meet these challenges and we look forward to helping you make the most of an exciting and rewarding career aboard superyachts..
