Superyachts have long been used as symbols of wealth, status, and luxury in films. Because yachts are not typically built for filming, one must be rented and, in some cases, specifically reproduced. As a result, many private superyachts have been specifically chosen to appear in films, increasing the yacht’s value and fame. Here are some of the most opulent, magnificent, and stunning superyachts featured in movies…

5 superyachts made famous by the movies

superyachts movies

Famous Superyacht? Aren’t they all? Yes maybe, but some find themselves becoming celebrities in their own right. We take a look at some Superyachts that have enjoyed 15 minutes of fame on-screen. Did you spot them at the cinema?!

What’s a James Bond movie without a Superyacht, right? The first of our Bond boats is Sunseeker’s 32.9m Casino Royale, which appeared in the 2006 film of the same name. If you fancy re-enacting the scene for yourself, Casino Royale can be chartered in the Western Mediterranean, with weekly rates from €65,000.

Our second famous Superyacht is another Bond star. Also the only sailing yacht on the casting list, is the beautiful 56m Regina. Built by Pruva Yachting and launched in 2011, this sailing starlet appeared in 2012 ‘Skyfall’ under the pseudonym ‘Chimera’. Regina was sold at the start of January 2019 and has since been renamed.

Another Sunseeker to have made it to the big screen is 40m Thumper. This popular charter yacht appeared in 2016’s ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’. She played host to Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley as they sipped Champagne off the coast of Cannes. Sweetie, Darling!

Digressing from the cinema screen to the set-top box. Sky Atlantic’s ‘Riviera’ series not only starred Golden Globe nominee Julia Stiles, but also 54m Turquoise AND its owner!  The 54m Superyacht was built by the Turquoise shipyard . Superyacht fans will spot her high-profile owner making a cameo appearance. Right before the famous Superyacht is blown up! (with the help of some CGI…)

Number 1 on our list, although arguably already a pretty famous Superyacht, is Lurssen’s 95.2m Kismet. The newest superyacht to enjoy on screen stardom. Featuring in Netflix’s latest good guys vs bad guys blockbuster ‘6 Underground’, alongside Ryan Reynolds. Kismet takes a leading role as the setting for one of the most spectacular shoot-outs in cinematic history. We hope not all the action was filmed on board! Imagine the repair bill! 6 Underground is available to watch on Netflix now, check out the trailer here > Kismet is available for charter and listed for sale with Moran Yachts .

Superyachts which are attributed to high lifestyle and money are often used by movie directors as part of their set when displaying a life of opulence. Whether used as the ultimate getaway vehicle, for romantic interludes in a scene, or for lavish, over-the-top parties, whenever featured they bring excitement to a movie.

Most, if not all filmed yachts are privately owned and on the charter market, available for rent through a charter broker. even as an integral part of the movie, the yachts rarely get credited so let’s explore them..

M3 in The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013)

The 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street” predominantly features the yacht M3 (ex: Lady M) . M3 is a luxury 147-foot motor yacht, built for Coco Chanel, that accommodates ten passengers in five staterooms, including an Owner’s suite, 1 VIP suite, two doubles, and a twin. The yacht was named ‘Naomi’ in the film after the second wife of the key character – Jordan Belfort a stockbroker, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.  The plot features a massive party aboard with a famous scene of “raining fun coupons.”  Making it rain fun money!   Later in the film the yacht supposedly sinks between Porto Cervo and Capri in a disastrous storm.  In 1997 a real-life similar yachting disaster happened to Jordan Belfort.

SARASTAR in Murder Mystery (2019)

In a mystery-comedy movie called “Murder Mystery” starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler, the yacht Sarastar was used as the crime scene of a murder and where the investigation takes place.  It was the private yacht of the billionaire. Soon the couple, Aniston and Sandler, become suspects in an Agatha Christie- esque murder mystery. Sarastar is 197 feet in length and was built in 2017 in Italy.  She accommodates twelve guests in six staterooms including an Owner’s suite and five double staterooms. Her foredeck is multi-purpose as it can be used as a Helipad, dance floor or for sunbathing. Below the foredeck is the garage that houses all her sea toys and tenders.

She is an older superyacht, built in 1985, that has been kept in tip top shape and was for charter in Greece until she was pulled off the market and made private.

KISMET in Six Underground (2019)

The yacht Kismet was used in the filming of the movie “Six Underground” in 2019.  The movie produced by Netflix, was filmed in Italy in 2019 and features the yacht Kismet in many scenes.  A group of eighty or so guests were filmed aboard having a large party scene and a few other action scenes with explosions near the yacht filmed.  The plot involves international operatives who are trying to take down a notorious dictator and the yacht is used as the setting in the final scene where Kismet, the stronghold of the dictator, gets blown up. Kismet, owned by Shadd Kan a Pakistani-American billionaire, was built in 2014. She is 312 feet in length, has five decks and can comfortably accommodate 270 guests for a party. One of her interesting features are video walls that reach two decks high.

Up to twelve passengers can be housed in her six staterooms.

WALLPOWER 118 in Island (2005)

The sleek yacht Wallpower 118  is unique in design and certainly will catch your eye.  She appeared in the film “Island” as Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor, the main characters, are set free and sail away in the sunset on this futuristically styled speed boat.  She can hit amazing speeds of 65 knots making her one of the fastest vessels in the world of her size.  She has three staterooms aboard for 6 guests. This film put Wally builds on the map for the non-yacht lover.

“Mamma Mia” featured the Haida 1929 , which is one of the oldest mega yachts in the water of today. She is 233 feet in length and offers the experience of cruising back in the 1930’s.  She was highlighted in the film on the scenes of the ABBA song Money, Money, Money with Meryl Streep.

PLANET NINE in Tenet (2020)

The sci-fi thriller movie “Tenet” spared no expense in securing the superyacht Planet Nine, 240 feet , to double as the lair of Tenet’s evil Andrei Sator. She was built in the Italian shipyard Admiral Yachts in 2018. She was filmed off the Amalfi Coast although her script location was Vietnam. The color of the yacht suited in helping make it feel sinister and almost military. They even placed a rocket launcher on the aft of the yacht.  It is equipped with a helipad which was portrayed in the movie as well as Andrei was off and on in his heli frequently.

TAIPAIN III in Rush Hour 2 (2001)

The Italian-built yacht in 1981, the Taipan III was used in filming “Rush Hour 2”. She has four decks and is outfitted with all the pleasure toys as newer models of yachts do, from jet skis, kayaks, and windsurfers and has a Jacuzzi as well. She is custom furnished with antiques offering old-world charm.

ATESSA in Overboard (1987)

The 130-foot superyacht Atessa (renamed Huntress) was named S.S. Immaculata in the 1987 comedy movie Overboard. Starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel, it was about the haves and have-nots and ultimately was a romance. Atessa was a part of the “have” life enjoyed before Goldie gets amnesia and gets thrown into a life of “have-not”.  Atessa was also featured in the 1993’s movie Indecent Proposal starring Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson. The owner of the Atessa actually lent the yacht to both film productions. She has three cabins aboard and a Jacuzzi.

R. RENDEZVOUS in Donnie Brasco (1992)

The movie “Donnie Brasco” features a yacht named Left Hand in the movie but in reality, it is the R. Rendezvous .  Built in 1992 she is 111 feet in length and played an integral part in the movie.

SOLANDGE in Successeion (2018)

The TV series “Succession” uses the German-built 280 feet long superyacht called Solandge .  A main feature is its panoramic upper deck that consists of a beach club, dance floor, full DJ station and bar.  This HBO series filmed its finale aboard of season 2. She accommodates guest up to 12 in an owner’s deck and suite, and eight stunning staterooms.

No list is complete without mentioning 007 aka: James Bond and the yachts used in his movies. It is well known the Bond movies showcase high-end luxury yachts and vehicles attributed to a fast-paced lifestyle.

FAIREY HUNTRESS in From Russia With Love (1963)

Some of the yachts were small but powerful and had an impact in the films. Sean Connery played Bond in “From Russia with Love” where there is an iconic yacht chase as he and the Bond girl Tatiana Romanova travel to Venice.  It is a small boat, Fairey Huntress , but they make a spectacular escape.

GLASTRON GT150 in Live and Let Die (1973)

In 1973 another small boat chase made headline in the movie “Live and Let Die”.  Here Roger Moore as James Bond careens through the everglades aboard Glastron GT150 and makes a 120 foot leap over the sheriff’s car.

KINGDOM 5KR in Never Say Never Again (1983)

“Never Say Never Again” used the yacht Kingdom 5KR as the floating base, named Flying Saucer,  of the evil Mr. Blofeld. A superyacht indeed at 282 feet in length, it was built in 1980 and at the time was the 8 th largest superyacht. Maybe more commonly known as once owned by ex US President Trump, it is now owned by Prince Al-Waleed. This yacht has everything on her five decks from a disco, cinema, a helipad, pool with a water jet, 11 ultra-luxurious suites and houses a crew of 48.

NORTHERN CROSS in Goldeneye (1995)

Pierce Brosnan plays James Bond in 1995’s “Goldeneye”.  The yacht Northern Cross was used to portray the residence of the assassin Xenia and Bond is out to save the world from a terror plot. This lair of the villain was named Manticore in the movie. They filmed most of her scenes off Monaco. The yacht is 141 feet and accommodates her guests of up to 12 in 6 luxurious suites.

M3 in Casino Royale (2006)

“Casino Royale” featured the M3 , a luxury Sunseeker Predator 108 foot built in 2003 as the Villain’s floating lair and filming on location in the Bahamas. .  Her four staterooms accommodate up to eight in an Owner’s suite, VIP and two twins.

Spirit 54 starred in “Casino Royale” with Daniel Craig and Eva Green in 2006, presenting herself with dignity as a classically elegant unique sailing yacht. The sailing yacht Spirit was featured heavily in this Bond movie and was the first yacht to sail up Venice’s Grand Canal in over 300 years. She was custom built for the movie by British contemporary yacht builders. During the yachts filming in Venice, the rigging had to be taken down ten times to fit under the various bridges. She has two staterooms aboard.

Sunseeker Sovereign 17 in Quantum of Solace (2008)

Shortly after, in 2008, James used a small yacht, an original (vintage) Sunseeker Sovereign 17 in the Bond movie “Quantum of Solace.  The scene takes Bond to Mathis’s villa in Italy. a Sunseeker Superhawk 43 is also featured in a chase scene in Panama.

ARIA I (ex: Regina) in Skyfall (2012)

James Bond takes to the water aboard a yacht once again for “Skyfall”.  This time he is in a neo-classical steel-hulled schooner of 183-Feet, Turkish built, now named Aria I . In the movie, James sails the yacht referred to as ‘Chimera’ to Hasshia Island, the villain’s island, in the East China Sea. There are five staterooms aboard; two Owner’s suites, two double staterooms, and two twin cabins for a total of twelve guests.  Today she sails on charter in the Greek isles and flies the Greek flag.

SPIRIT 46 in No Time To Die (2021)

Here is a sneak peak of the new James Bond movie, “No Time To Die”, using Spirit 46 . The soon to be released film will feature the classic wooden-hulled sailing yacht Spirit 46. We will see James behind the helm sailing off the coast of Jamaica, in style.

Superyachts have played star roles in many a movie and TV show.  They range from the villain’s vessel to the play toy of millionaires. They have been depicted and seen as the ultimate in luxury and style symbolizing wealth and status.

So for those of you who have watched superyachts in films and wished you knew more, here was a small glimpse into some of them. oh, the lifestyle of being aboard a yacht, well, we all can’t all own them, but we can charter them.  these movie producers certainly did as all are for hire around the globe.  “rent the yacht, own the feeling” as valef yachts says..

Cheers to the always aspirational yacht life.

If you’ve ever fallen in love with a superyacht on the silver screen, now’s the chance to live the dream  with a luxury yacht charter in the Mediterranean or Caribbean this summer with these 10 incredible picks.

Sail through the Eastern Mediterranean aboard the classic schooner that starred in Skyfall, or party all night long on the decks of one of the most recognizable motor yachts of our time. Read on and see how many of these superyachts you recognize.

Ocean Club (Ex.Aspen Alternative)

37m/121ft motor yacht OCEAN CLUB (ex.ASPEN ALTERNATIVE, CHAIRMAN) was an integral part of romantic comedy remake Overboard and she is currently available for summer charter in the Bahamas and Caribbean .

Refitted in 2014, she comes equipped for action and leisure with an on board gym, bikes, plenty of water toys and a Jacuzzi and home theatre system.

The classic interiors designed by Patrick Knowles are perfect for special events such as honeymoons, or for impressing on a corporate event charter. Sleeping up to nine guests over five large cabins, there is plenty of room on board to host a party, with wet bars across the deck to complement meals.

M3 (Ex.Lady M)

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort partied hard aboard superyacht M3 (ex.LADY M, AQUASITION) in 2013’s  The Wolf of Wall Street , and charter guests will find the perfect set-up for their own special occasion. Internationally recognised  Luiz De Basto Designs was involved in both the interior and exterior styling, where the timeless surroundings are fitted with a grand baby piano, marble flooring, a wet bar and games table to suit the mood as the evening progresses.

The sundeck is the ultimate place on board for sunshine, cocktails and relaxation, with a wet bar, Jacuzzi and plenty of sunpads to choose from – all for 12 guests to enjoy all to themselves.

Northern Cross

It should come as no surprise that the James Bond films are heavy contributors to this list, showcasing dazzling locations and the latest luxuries in accessories and, of course sports cars and superyachts.

For that reason, Marin Teknikk ‘s 1991 superyacht NORTHERN CROSS, which featured in classic James Bond film  Goldeneye , is a staple on this list. Charter guests find her every bit as lavish, and she has been carefully maintained and updated for romantic and atmospheric living areas suited to special occasions and family getaways throughout the year.

Ocean Emerald

When the 1991 film  Point Break  was remade in 2015, the unique and imposing 2009 luxury yacht OCEAN EMERALD from  Rodriquez Cantieri Navali was selected to film the on board scenes. The exterior deck areas make use of the 8.4m/27.6ft beam for large salons, while the alfresco dining options on the upper decks benefit from shade and panoramic views.

The stately interiors use a fresh monochrome color scheme and floor-to-ceiling windows for bright social spaces and a greater connection with nature. The five cabins use pale wooden paneling and plush mattresses for a cozy and comfortable night’s rest in preparation for a day of adventure with the water toys.

Classic motor yacht SURI was used as the location for the final dramatic scenes of 2016’s  Mechanic: Resurrection,  where a fight scene covering the sundeck down to the extensive main deck aft and swim platform. Built in 1978, she has an excellent and long-established reputation on the charter market, combining comfort with timeless styling for a home away from home.

Originally known as motor yacht M3, this 33m/108ft Sunseeker Predator 108 lives up to her on-screen glamour with mirrors on the ceiling, contemporary styling and generous outdoor spaces for up to eight guests. An unusual feature for a sports yacht, she has a Jacuzzi positioned on the bow and a myriad of sunpads for guests to choose from to sunbathe or watch the night sky.

The 47m/154ft Delta Marine superyacht USHER (ex.MR TERRIBLE) starred as the party boat in the 2015 film  Entourage,  showing off her spacious exterior aft decks and massive sundeck Jacuzzi. Offering accommodation for up to 12 guests across five cabins, motor yacht USHER is available for charter in the Caribbean and Bahamas as well as Florida . Capable of a top speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots, she represents performance and power as well as style.

While motor yachts usually bring the latest gadgets and glamour, it was the graceful 56m/184ft luxury schooner REGINA that starred in the 2012 James Bond film  Skyfall . Built only a year earlier, sailing yacht REGINA provided all the style of a classic vessel while incorporating the very latest navigational technology and impeccable interiors finished in rich mahogany and white lacquer.

superyachts movies

Currently available for charter in the Eastern Mediterranean locations of Greece and Turkey , she offers up to 12 guests six luscious cabins, a variety of on board entertainments and an abundance of deck space for alfresco and sunbathing for making your own exotic adventure.

Although 1974-built expedition yacht ALUCIA hasn’t starred in any films, she has played an important role on the small screen as well as in long-term environmental research. Featured in the documentary Blue Planet II and the Great Barrier Reef , M/Y ALUCIA was refitted in 2016 with the latest research equipment and on board comforts.

Famous Yachts In Movies

Yachts have long been employed in movies as symbols of wealth, status and luxury, as well as of adventures, traveling and romance. In the imagination of a director certain things just fit well on a yacht and should therefore be filmed on one. One cannot simply film a luxurious, high-security, 'millionaires-only' party on a steamboat. Not nowadays, at least. Unless it's coated in gold!

12 standout superyacht cinemas for movie nights on board

Whether you have been trying to master an electric surfboard, or exploring ashore in the beating heat, sometimes it is nice to just put your feet up and flick on a movie. From a big screen experience to a cinema under the stars, we take a look at 12 of the best cinemas afloat...

Up to 12 guests can gather to watch films – nautical themed or otherwise – in the plush upper deck cinema on 82 metre Secret . Built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2013, the superyacht for sale boasts an interior by Jim Harris with the cinema fulfilling the luxurious design brief. The space is home to 12 red leather cinema-style reclining seats, so guests can flick through the list of over 1,000 movies in utmost comfort.

More about this yacht

White rabbit.

Famed for being the largest trimaran in the world, Echo Yachts ’ 84 metre White Rabbit has plenty of space for entertaining facilities like cinemas. Located on the sundeck, the cinema is finished in chequered Tasmanian oak and was designed as an informal area for younger generations to enjoy.  The cinema seats vibrate depending on what’s happening on screen, while the whole area can be shut off for a true cinema experience. Being away from the accommodation also means you can turn the volume way up.

The 85 metre SilverYachts explorer Bold is home to an enormous screen - or rather nine screens that can be synchronised to show one gigantic image - for streaming videos, looking at navigation information and charts, or watching a movie with the family. The space doubles up as a disco room in the evenings and the screen is hooked up to high-wattage sound via Renkus-Heinz speakers.

Nobiskrug ’s 92.4 metre Tatoosh was originally delivered in 2000, but emerged in 2021 following an extensive refit. A full cinema is located on the main deck and features plush armchairs and footrests in crimson velvet, offering the perfect place for a private screening or a cosy movie night on board. A starred carpet is reminiscent of Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame - which seems more than fitting.

Benetti ’s 108 metre IJE features an Art Deco interior by British studio RWD . Unlike the bright and airy main saloon and guest quarters, the cinema is finished in darker colours to ensure a perfect film-viewing experience and it’s fitted with a massive door and absorbing materials such as leather, carpets and soft cushions to prevent any noise from escaping into the adjacent guest or crew cabins.

Bilgin's 80 metre superyacht Tatiana has a wealth of entertainment features packed into her 1,680GT interiors styled by H2 Yacht Design . The cosy, blacked-out cinema features a warm colour palette and soft lighting and is equipped with plush sofas and even a daybed behind so that you can fully relax (or drift off to sleep) while watching your favourite film on the big screen.

Image courtesy of Jeff Brown/Breed media

Laurentia's interior designer Radyca is particularly proud of her aft deck cinema - and for good reason. The retractable HD projector is fitted right above the sliding doors leading to the main saloon and is double-sided meaning guests can watch movies from both the saloon and the aft deck at the same time. The screen is treated with special 360-degree projection technology - which can be applied to both vinyl and glass - meaning films can be projected onto both sides simultaneously using just one projector equating to an impressively high-tech space-saving solution.

Yachts for charter

Acoustics were a primary focus for the Reymond Langton design team during the construction of Nobiskrug's sustainable hybrid superyacht , and that means that movie nights in the cosy cinema room on board Artefact will be uninterrupted by the outside word. The room has been equipped with a theatre-size screen and Atmos surround sound for an immersive viewing experience, and is also decorated with three-dimensional custom-made ceiling and wall panels constructed from corrugated leather which are designed to help with acoustic performance and soundproofing.

Maltese Falcon

The iconic Perini Navi sailing yacht  Maltese Falcon boasts the largest outdoor movie screen on the water. How? Films are projected onto her sails. This unusual outdoor cinema beats any indoor theatre experience hands down.

Measuring just under 105 metres LOA, the Blohm+Voss superyacht Lady Moura was one of the biggest boats in the world at the time of her launch in 1990, which means there's plenty of space on board for entertainment features like this expansive cinema room. Her interior designer Luigi Sturchio created a resplendent cinema with dramatic colours and lighting, finished with deep-cushioned sofas and classical columns for a palatial feel.

Home to a raft of pretty beaches, rustic summer tavernas and vivid blue-green waters, the island created the picture-perfect setting for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter , starring Oscar-winner Olivia Coleman as the inscrutable Leda.

Spetses' beautiful harbor in the Saronic Islands, Greece

Part of Greece ’s Saronic archipelago , the tiny island covers a mere 10 square miles, with most of the action concentrated on the charming black and white mosaic esplanade in its eponymous capital on the island’s east coast. Here, the town's narrow cobbled streets, awash with bustling cafes and bars that spill onto the pavements, meander around the gleaming white neoclassical red-roofed kapetanospita that line the scalloped harbor.

Sometimes referred to as the "Greek Monaco ", the island has played host to a number of prominent figures over the years. From Charles and Di, who spent part of their honeymoon here to the wedding of King Constantine’s son Prince Nicholas in 2010. With its dappled, pine-scented walkways and relaxed cafe vibe that ebbs and flows with the seasons, Spetses is quintessentially Greek, yet with perceptible influences from its Venetian and Ottoman rulers.

There is a summer bus that circles the island, however most people get around by bike or on foot. There are also a number of idyllic beaches only accessible by boat, including the whimsical Zogheria Beach where the majority of the filming took place, characterized by its gentle sloping sands and cool green waters.

Sicily, Italy

The Godfather

Italy’ s largest island boasts a veritable feast of cultural gems, however it is often for its more recent, darker past that lures visitors to its shores.

High in the hills of the Sicilian countryside is where you’ll find the iconic locations made famous by Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy, which form the backdrops for some of the movies’ most memorable scenes.

Beautiful town of Forza D'Agro in Sicily, Italy

Although the real Italian don’s family came from Corleone, filmmakers deemed the town too overcrowded to shoot the classic 1972 gangster movie, choosing to foreground the beautiful hilltop villages of Savoca and Forza d'Agrò instead.

There are limousine tours that take you and your guests from the harbor to Forzà d'Agrò near Taormina where many of the village scenes took place. Here you can visit the pretty Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Convent of the Frati Minori Cappuccini featuring an underground crypt.

Some of the most memorable scenes take place in the small medieval commune of Savoca, where Godfather aficionados will instantly recognize Bar Vitelli, where Michael Corleone told Apollonia’s father who he really was as he declared his intention to marry his daughter.

The now instagram-worthy backdrops where the Corleone family et al ate, drank and worshiped remain largely unchanged today as you learn all about the years of tyrannical rule under the Siciian mafia, which has mercifully ceased to exert its influence over the beautiful Italian island.

Modriki Island, Fiji

Located a mere champagne cork’s pop away from Fiji ’s largest island of Viti Levu , the tiny one-kilometer wide island of Monuriki is, quite simply, breathtaking. If you closed your eyes and imagined what paradise might look like, I would imagine it would look something like this.

Modriki Island, Fiji

Forming part of the Mamanuca Island group in the South Pacific Ocean, the tiny isle is home to stretches of bone white sands and stunning natural beauty that formed the backdrop for the Robert Zemeckis film Cast Away , starring Tom Hanks (and a basketball called Wilson). Surrounded by coral reefs, the island is the ideal jumping off point for excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.

Fiji is its own utopian getaway, made up of an array of island groups awash with palm-strewn beaches surrounded by pellucid blue waters teeming with tropical marine flora and fauna. The volcanic islands also offer up a stunning tableau of lush interiors, welcoming locals and upscale resorts for a spot of heavenly pampering.

Skopelos, Greece

Part of the Sporades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, Skopelos is a small island awash with lush pine-scented trails, gleaming whitewashed buildings and cool blue-green waters. It was these qualities that inspired Mamma Mia ’s film’s producers, instantly catapulting the island into the limelight upon the movie’s release.

Some of the most prominent landmarks that feature in the movie are the iconic chapel perched high on a rocky precipice at Agios Ioannis , as well as the beautiful beaches at Kastani and Glysteri . There are, of course, Mamma Mia! tours on offer, however chartering your own private crewed yacht is infinitely preferable, where you can cruise the different locations at your own pace while enjoying top notch service and luxury amenities.

Quintessentially Greek, Skopleos feels a million miles away from the hedonistic party islands of Mykonos and Santorini . Instead, there is a serene, relaxed vibe, with the main hub of Skopelos Town providing the bulk of the action. Featuring scores of dazzling white dwellings topped with terracotta tiles and splashes of vibrant bougainvillea, you will be instantly charmed from the moment you step ashore.

Skopelos Town’s sleepy harbor is lined with family-run tavernas, perfect for enjoying authentic Greek cuisine encompassing the freshest seafood plucked straight from the Aegean, or simply sipping a retsina as you watch a tangerine sun slip over the horizon.

Glen Coe, Scotland

Characterized by its cloud-wrapped conical peaks and heather-strewn landscapes, Glen Coe is perhaps the best known of Scotland 's Highland glens. Providing the majestic mountainous backdrop for James Bond’s ancestral home “Skyfall” in the eponymous film, the misty glens of Glen Coe are a superlative example of nature at its finest.

Offering up some of the most beautiful cruising grounds the United Kingdom has to offer, Scotland has in enduring romantic appeal with its craggy coastline, medieval castles perched on every peninsula and deserted golden beaches, and has swiftly become a go-to destination for luxury yachts venturing away from the usual Mediterranean hotspots during the summer months.

Split, Croatia

The Weekend Away

The beautiful and historic Croatian city of Split was the location du jour for the 2022 Netflix thriller The Weekend Away , starring Leighton Meester as a new mother who embarks on a weekend retreat with her best friend, before things quickly begin to unravel after her friend is found dead and she becomes the prime suspect.

Split in Croatia

Although filmed across a number of locations throughout Croatia , the sun-kissed city of Split was the predominant scene-stealer. Featuring an array of architecture covering the medieval, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque eras, as well as a number of UNESCO Heritage Sites, including the Roman-built Diocletian’s Palace that also enjoyed a star billing on the Game of Thrones , the coastal hotspot is often known for its moniker “Croatia’s jewel in the crown” for good reason.

Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia

Abounding in historic gems – with the ancient palace forming the living heart of Split’s Old Town – Croatia’s second-largest city also offers easy access to prestigious art galleries, high-end restaurants, trendy bars and beautiful beaches to keep you and your guests entertained.

Ischia, Italy

The Talented Mr Ripley

Locally known as Isola Verde, or the Green Isle, Ischia ’s vertiginous green-topped hills,  picturesque towns and bougainvillea-draped landscapes offered the perfect backdrop for Patricia Highsmith’s global bestseller turned hit movie The Talented Mr Ripley , a psychological thriller starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. The island also featured in the 1963 historical drama Cleopatra , starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Island of Ischia in Italy

While a number of locations along Italy's famed Amalfi Coast were used in the movie, Ischia is arguably one of the prettiest.

Renowned for its thermal springs and manicured gardens, the volcanic isle of Ischia is the largest island in the bay of Naples , but with an authentic italian air that belies its proximity to its more glitzy sister Capri .

With speeding vespas, bursts of effusive greetings and arm-folding nonna's leant against door frames, Ischia’s made-in-Italy appeal is clear to see. With numerous stretches of unspoilt beaches and lively towns each with their own characteristics – from its commercial heart of Ischia Porto to the old-world vibe of Ischia Ponte – the island is a haven for anyone hankering after a true taste of Italy.

For those that prefer the finer things in life, the island still boasts an array of luxury offerings to please the most discerning traveler, with fine dining, 5-star hotels and exclusive nightlife all readily available.

The island also offers plenty of pursuits; from enjoying a gelato along the pretty marina at Lacco Ameno and trekking up Mount Epomeo to strolling across to the iconic medieval castle of Aragonese , which sits on its own volcanic rock formation, accessible via a footbridge.

For incredible sunset views, Madonna del Soccorso ’s whitewashed hilltop church is the place to be. Meanwhile, a stroll through the picturesque (and carless) fishing village of Sant’Angelo is a must while visiting the island.

Billionaires Are Getting Ready for Summer With Wildly Spectacular Superyachts New custom builds from the world's most prestigious shipyards — Lurssen, Feadship, Oceanco, Benetti — can run into the hundreds of millions. Even a used superyacht can cost $75 million.

By Madeline Berg • Apr 2, 2024

Key Takeaways

  • Superyachts, the most expensive asset a billionaire can own, are pushing the boundaries of luxury.
  • The boats, which cost eight or nine figures, are getting larger and include more features than ever.
  • From massage rooms to basketball courts, here's what the world's richest want on board.

This article originally appeared on Business Insider .

For many wealthy boat owners, a private spa is a must-have on board. A sauna is a nice touch. A Jet Ski or two makes days at sea way more fun. And if you don't have someone on board who can whip up a Michelin-star-worthy meal , you might as well stay on land.

In the world of massive yachts , there's no such thing as too much. After all, if someone spends eight or nine figures to design the vessel of their dreams — or at least $500,000 a week to charter one — more is more.

"Yachting. It's not rational; it's emotional," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show, where dozens of superyachts — often defined as vessels over 30 meters in length — were on display.

And while there are certain classic features, such as jacuzzis and bars, what superyacht owners want is evolving, insiders at the show said. That might mean more crew members, more space for helicopters, or more water toys, but might also include manicure salons and putting greens.

"The bar of what is the baseline expectation has increased exponentially just over the last four or five years," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. Clients are "spending more time on the boat and really wanting to extend the lifestyle they lead on the shore."

A lot of this can be chalked up to the pandemic. Superyacht purchases and charters spiked as life and luxury travel on land screeched to a halt. While the market has moderated slightly, the number of superyachts on order — 1,166 as of September, according to Boat International's Global Order Book — is still above pre-pandemic norms.

"What the pandemic really showed is that the appetite for being out there at sea, sort of living the marine lifestyle, is still as valid as ever," Kurtén said.

That means there's a lot of money on the water. The total value of the 203 superyachts over 30 meters delivered last year was $6.4 billion, according to data from SuperYacht Times. New custom builds from the world's most prestigious shipyards — Lurssen, Feadship, Oceanco , Benetti — can run into the hundreds of millions. Even used superyachts at the Palm Beach show cost as much as $75 million.

And it's not just traditional buyers like retired wealthy couples looking for a place to relax or celebrities looking for a place to party away from the paparazzi. New clients are often younger and have families, so want areas to work and watch movies . They also want pricey water toys, access to fitness equipment, or even pizza ovens for picky eaters.

"This would've never happened in the nineties," said Giovanna Vitelli, the vice president of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts. "You would go with your beautiful woman, Champagne — the idea of yachting was much more showing off with your jacuzzi and things like that."

Pure opulence has made room for function.

When Benetti's Nabila set sail in 1980, its 50-person crew, gold-and-diamond-encrusted interiors, and lavish parties captured headlines and even inspired the Queen song "Kashoggi's Ship."(Seven years later, Donald Trump bought Nabila for $30 million , renaming her the Trump Princess.)

"Life on board was considered very formal — big formal dining rooms, boats were high on the water, you would be segregated from the rest of the world," Vitelli said, remembering another client who insisted on a replica of the Sistine Chapel above the dining table.

But the ostentatious, palatial-like interiors that used to be highlighted in yacht brochures have made way for lists of more functional features .

Rather than esoteric novelties like an extra-large safe for rifles that one builder had to construct per a Russian yacht owner's request , the superyachts on display at the Palm Beach show featured basketball courts, saunas, and ice baths.

Owners want elevators and luxury gyms. Pampering options, be it a massage room, manicure station, or a professional-grade facial machine, are a dime a dozen. Some bathrooms have fancy Toto toilets, which can cost around $20,000.

Sterns (that's the back of the boat) used to be built high to guard guests' privacy. Now, they're built as "beach clubs" — an open swim platform.

Triumph bathroom

And what good is a massage room if no one on board can give one? Many superyachts can hold twice as many crew members as guests, if not more. One broker, representing a boat that didn't have a masseuse, said it could be quite a "tricky" issue because if a charter wants one, they have to find someone who can massage guests and "pull their weight with the crew."

"It's not uncommon to look for a deckhand who can also mix a martini, play an instrument, maybe entertain the guests with singing, and ideally even give a massage," Kurtén said.

Of course, a crew comes at a cost . Most are considered full-time employees, requiring salaries and benefits like health insurance. Captains, first mates, and chief engineers often make six figures a year. That's without tips; a charter guest will typically spend six figures on gratuities for the crew who worked during a weeklong vacation.

Benetti Grateful

For the superrich, there must be room for toys.

It's not just the onboard amenities that count. What's known as "toys" in the industry — water slides, eFoils, Jet Skis, and underwater scuba diving jets — are popular, and costs range from merely hundreds of dollars (banana boats) to millions ( submersibles , which are still popular despite the recent tragedy).

" Tenders and toys, the sky seems to be the limit," Kurtén said. "More is more."

If you can't fit all those toys in the yacht's storage space, you can just use another boat. Jeff Bezos' support yacht is a superyacht in itself, measuring 75 meters and costing tens of millions of dollars. (His main yacht, Koru , cost a reported $500 million.)

Support yachts are also faster, meaning the crew can get to a destination first and set up the Jet Skis, seapools, and the like, Dazert said. "By the time the owner arrives on the main yacht, everything's set up, and he can go and have fun."

Nero yacht exterior

Modeled after J.P. Morgan's yacht, the Nero is available to charter for about $500,000 a week. One of its custom tenders is also pictured. Courtesy of Burgess

Even tenders, the smaller vessel that brings guests from the ship to the shore, are getting glow-ups. The Nero, a 90-meter beauty available to charter for about $500,000 a week and modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship, has custom-built tenders to match the design. The most expensive ones often cost seven figures. Nero has three.

"It used to be a tender was a tender," Jeffrey Beneville, who handles yacht insurance at NFP, told BI. "Now they're called limousine tenders. Think of an incredibly luxurious gondola that's got a hard top so nobody's hair gets mussed when they're being dropped off at the Monaco Yacht Club ."

One thing that clearly hasn't changed in superyachting: showing off. If the boat next door at the marina has an indoor-outdoor cinema, it's natural to want one too. Ditto a wine cellar or helipad.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Vitelli, whose company is behind the Lana yacht Bill Gates chartered for a birthday party three years ago, said. "You push it a little more."

And that's a boon for yacht makers and brokers catering to the super-rich.

"Our job is to make clients' dreams come true," Kurtén said.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

  • Jeff Bezos' yacht , which reportedly cost $500 million to build, completed its first year at sea.
  • The superyacht, Koru, was a frequent topic of conversation at the Palm Beach boat show.
  • Here's what industry insiders think about the vessel.

Insider Today

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

Related stories

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.

Sean Combs’ son Christian accused of sexual assault on yacht Diddy chartered

This story contains a description of an alleged sexual assault.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has been named in another civil lawsuit, this time by a woman alleging that his son Christian “King” Combs sexually assaulted her aboard a superyacht the Bad Boy Entertainment co-founder charted in late 2022.

But the Combs team dismissed it as “just another lewd and meritless claim” by her attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, that is “filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts” that they’ve come to expect from the New York-based lawyer.

In the lawsuit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Grace O’Marcaigh added her name to the list of people accusing the embattled business mogul of alleged wrongdoing while he faces a federal probe into sex-trafficking allegations. O’Marcaigh, who worked as a steward on the Victorious ship, alleged that the 26-year-old rapper Christian Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her in late December 2022 aboard the boat charter, which Diddy “sold as a wholesome family excursion” that devolved into a “hedonistic environment.”

O’Marcaigh, who was 25 around the time of the alleged incident, provided dinner and drink service on the yacht from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The bartender also said she witnessed partying and drug use between a “constant rotation of suspected sex workers and other A-List celebrities, according to the filing reviewed Friday by The Times.

What to know about the Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs lawsuits, raids

Music mogul and rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who’s facing multiple lawsuits, is the subject of a sweeping sex trafficking probe that resulted in a federal raid of his L.A. and Miami homes.

March 28, 2024

O’Marcaigh is accusing Christian Combs, one of Diddy’s children with the late model Kim Porter , of sexual assault, sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress in the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages and a jury trial. Diddy, 54, who is named as a co-defendant , is being sued for premises liability as the person who leased the yacht and “had full control of the staff and premises” and for aiding and abetting his son in the alleged assault. O’Marcaigh accused him of orchestrating a “subsequent coverup” of her alleged assault that ultimately resulted in her termination in May 2023.

She claimed that Diddy allowed for “unwanted exposure to unlawful drug use, sex work, and general chaos,” adding that the mogul “created an extremely hazardous environment” in which staff was often “treated with disrespect, suspected sex workers were sprawled out unconscious about the yacht, and it was difficult to distinguish which bottles of alcohol were laced with drugs and which bottles were not.” She described women aboard the yacht “falling over themselves, panicking, or passing out” after one shot of tequila or one mixed drink that she believed was “likely laced with drugs.”

The complaint was filed by attorney Tyrone A. Blackburn, the lawyer who is also representing Diddy’s former “Love” album producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones in a bombshell sexual harassment and assault case brought against the Grammy Award winner, his son Justin “Dior” Combs, Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and other members of Diddy’s inner circle . (O’Marcaigh, in her complaint, described Jones as “an extended member of the service staff” who spent time with her at the service bar and piano room on the yacht.)

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ ex slams feds, posts dramatic video of L.A. raid where his sons were detained

Misa Hylton, mother of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ son Justin Dior Combs, accused federal agents of racism when they detained him at his father’s L.A. mansion.

April 2, 2024

She also made several other allegations about illicit behavior by Diddy and Gooding, whom she said she witnessed “inappropriately touching” Jones, as was alleged in Jones’ lawsuit.

“Like father, like son,” Blackburn said in a statement to NBC News , which first reported on the new lawsuit. “It gives us no joy or pleasure in filing this suit against Christian Combs who has clearly adopted his father’s pattern and practice of depravity.”

Blackburn and fellow filing attorney Rodney S. Diggs did not respond Friday to The Times’ requests for comment.

“This is just another lewd and meritless claim from Tyrone Blackburn — just like what he filed in the Rodney Jones lawsuit, which he still has not served,” said attorney Aaron Dyer, who represents both Sean and Christian Combs.

“This complaint is filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we’ve come to expect from Blackburn. This is exactly why the federal judge in New York slapped him two days ago for a ‘pattern of behavior’ in ‘improperly [filing] cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly,’ and why he was referred to the disciplinary committee in the Southern District of New York. We will be filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim.”

In the past, Diddy has denied wrongdoing and vowed to fight the lawsuits. Four women, including his ex Casandra “Cassie” Ventura , have sued him since last November alleging sexual assault.

O’Marcaigh, who is described in court documents as “a European Caucasian female who worked as a Stewardess in the Yachting Industry since 2018,” said she planned to work the entirety of her career in hospitality and the yachting industry, but, as stated in her complaint, “those plans have been derailed due to the trauma [she] continues to have as a result of the assault.”

In the wake of multiple lawsuits filed against him, former members of Combs’ inner circle told The Times that his alleged misconduct against women goes back decades.

Dec. 13, 2023

On or around Dec. 28, 2022 — days before Diddy hosted a star-studded New Year’s Eve party aboard the ship — O’Marcaigh said that she worked the late shift on the yacht when Christian Combs, who usually stayed at a nearby villa on shore, came aboard “heavily intoxicated” from what O’Marcaigh believed was “a mixture of narcotics and alcohol.”

While she was serving drinks in the studio where Jones also was present that night, Christian was being “particularly attentive with her, which she considered very inappropriate.” Christian then insisted that O’Marcaigh take a shot of tequila, which she believed he had spiked. She stated that she “felt comfortable knowing that Mr. Jones was present and “didn’t think anything more of it,” and thought she could return to the pantry after the drink. But when she took the shot , she said the “mood changed” and things “became sinister.”

O’Marcaigh described Christian violently grabbing her arm and hurting her as he insisted that she take another shot. After that, “the situation escalated” and she described being physically assaulted by Christian, whom she alleged touched her legs, breasts, anus and vagina, and who also tried to kiss her on the neck, face and hands.

She said the timeline became “very blurry and vague.”

But because O’Marcaigh said Diddy insisted on “Mr. Jones recording everything,” Lil Rod obtained an audio recording of the alleged incident in which O’Marcaigh believes Christian drugged and assaulted her . The recording was submitted as an exhibit in O’Marcaigh’s case.

In a transcript of the recording included in the complaint to describe the alleged incident, O’Marcaigh tries to leave but Christian does not let her. She tells him not to touch her legs or backside.

After she left , the complaint said, Christian later found her and “demanded that she find him a place to sleep on the yacht” and he refused to go back to shore.

A timeline of allegations against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

Hip-hop mogul and entrepreneur Diddy has been accused of physical and sexual violence dating back to 1990. Here’s a timeline of the allegations.

March 26, 2024

O’Marcaigh went with him to the cinema, which was commonly used as an extra sleeping area, and he allegedly blocked her from exiting. She described Christian getting “physical and extremely aggressive,” cornering her and allegedly groping her despite her pushing back. He allegedly removed his clothes, exposed his erect penis and physically tried to force her to perform oral sex on him. She began fighting him, and then one of her colleagues entered the cinema, startling Christian and O’Marcaigh was able to leave.

She said she was “seriously bruised as a result of the attack,” that she did not consent to any of the sexual assault or misconduct, and that she was drugged and intoxicated by Christian. Images of her bruising were also included in the complaint.

O’Marcaigh said she complained to the yacht captain the next morning but alleged that he “berated [her and] lacked compassion or concern, failed to investigate, and insisted that [she] was probably voluntarily partying with the guests.” (She said she was not.)

After the incident, O’Marcaigh said that she was assigned to work in the front of the house, which required her to personally serve Christian Combs while he was aboard the yacht. She also alleged that the captain “received a generous tip” from Diddy to keep him “quiet and from protecting [O’Marcaigh] or taking action on her behalf.”

She alleged that Diddy “fostered and encouraged an environment of debauchery” and “did not have any safeguards in place to ensure there was no excessive drug use, no excessive drinking, and no importation of purported sex workers.”

Where is Diddy? Sean Combs remains in U.S. amid widening sex trafficking probe, sources say

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs remains in the United States and vows to fight sex trafficking allegations, sources close to the music legend said.

March 27, 2024

“He intentionally created an unsafe environment that gave license to [Christian Combs] and his friends to believe that he was free to sexually assault [O’Marcaigh]” and allowed him and his friends “to behave carelessly, as they observed and mimicked his actions.”

O’Marcaigh said that the alleged assault deeply impacted her mental health, as well as her professional and personal life. She alleged that as a result of the alleged attack, her mental health deteriorated, she experienced anxiety and panic attacks and had severe suicidal ideations, the lawsuit said. She claimed the emotional strain also affected her physical health and she developed an eating disorder and epileptic seizures following the incident.
