Even SailingTexas has no pix. Has anyone met this boat? It's fast (DPN 91) and looks quite pretty; saw some specs that claimed 1100 lbs of ballast (in a 1900 lb boat?!). But that's all I could find on it. Is it available in a swing keel, or just a 4' fixed keel? Really need draft under 2', since our reservoirs have no water in them. Construction quality? Here's a few pictures -- darn fine looking boat for $2000. (And no, I'm not the seller -- just looking around for boats in the SJ21/Catalina22 category. Other suggestions welcome....)

This is a great little boat - with the emphasis on "little". But she sails well, has good habits, a "bigger" boat feel and is a proven seaworthy design (Carl Schumacher or Gary Mull, I think). I don't believe there is a shoal draft version. In the early 80s a young woman (18) named Amy Boyer sailed one solo from England, across the Atlantic via the Canaries to the Caribbean. Subsequently she sailed a mini transpac before settling in BC's southwestern corner. Her boat spent another 15 years here or so before being sold to the Okanogan, I believe. The boat was called "Little Rascal". During her time here her owner taught literally dozens of sailors on windy Howe Sound, and the boat even survived a port/stbd collision with a Catalina 27 (not his fault) with suprisingly little damage. For $2K it's a nice boat. (assuming it's in good shape)

Thanks, Faster. Judging from the "tea cozies" on all six winches, the motor, and tiller, the owners of the Craigslist Wilderness21 must care deeply about her. Alas, there isn't a lake in this whole state where you could launch a 4' fixed keel. Or I would be all over that boat. Hope she finds a loving home. Good stories. It would require some real self-belief to take a boat of that length and heft and point it across the Atlantic. ---------------------- If the gang here would oblige, I'm looking for swing-keel daysailers/pocket cruisers from 19 to 22 feet, under 2000 lbs. Balance between cockpit size and usable cabin (tho most overnighting would be done in a tent.) Beachable, solidly made, little wood above decks; unlikely to capsize, but not a wallowing tub. A DPN under 100. Will be trailered everywhere. My model is the SJ21, pref. the MkII. I'm not real happy about the balsa-cored decks and their history of rotting out; and I suspect the SJ21 needs constant steering. But that boat is the comparator. So, if you would, help me put together a list of good daysailers under 2' of draft.

Are you in Texas? If so, Travis is only about 180 ft deep in spots with lots of places where you can go to the shore with 50+ feet under your hull. Texhoma is also a deep water lake. Both have very active sailing communities.

Sounds like maybe you should be considering multihulls.....

There are a lot of boats that would meet your criteria. But might be hard to find where u live. Consider moving to another state? However a Jeanneau 2000, 21 foot 9 loa, 8foot 4 beam, 2756 pounds dry weight. draft 11 inches board up 5 foot 2 down is available, I have no idea what one costs.

Old thread, but just wanted to add that I’m a new owner of a WIlderness 21 as well. If anyone has information about sail choices for it I’d appreciate that. My current thinking is that this boat has similarities to the J/22, so considering some info from the North Sails tuning guide for J/22. W21 having a foot less of LWL and 300 lbs more ballast but similar overall displacement.

It’s been a year and change since I bought my Wilderness 21. Had a busy and rewarding season in 2022 with racing and plunking around. I am keeping a blog with info on it. Wilderness 21 Sailboat . It’s been a very fun boat for single handing, doubles and occasionally more.

Greetings. My Wilderness 21 has no lifelines, and probably never had them. I would like to start participating in some coastal racing where lifelines are required. Looking at some of the photos, it looks like some folks have a stern pulpit and others dead end the lifelines to the toe rail. Do people have tips about installing lifelines? Strong feelings about the need for a stern pulpit? Many thanks! (Really glad to have found NewportJE's blog, by the way. Great stuff.)

Tinker is sail #6, my little blue Wilderness 21. The first yacht race I ever competed in was the SSS Three Bridge Fiasco in 2005. That year, there were two Wilderness 21 boats, Tinker and Pappy. Pappy finished and I didn't. I'm still trying to figure out all the reasons why I can't ever finish that race. Trust me, January 31, 2009, Tinker will be there with everything I can do to make her sail fast enough to finish the race. I have two problems with Tinker that I'd like to improve before moving on to a larger boat. 1) The rudder is not long enough. I've broached badly a few times. Tinker has never capsized but that would be difficult with a 60% keel/boat weight ratio. I have to keep a lot of weight in the back of the boat to keep the rudder from popping out of the water when going down wind. I don't go forward or the boat will do a quick 90 degree turn to the wind. 2) Sailing into the wind is slow. Maintaining boat speed into the wind is where I loose all the races. With light winds, sometimes I'll creep by bigger boats, but when the bay winds get over 15 knots, everyone leaves me in their dust. It's not just because the boat is only 21 feet long. I've considered hiking out on a trapeze but that would be too much work. Down wind, I could pick up some time if it wasn't so risky banging around with the autopilot trying to keep the boat straight while I'm rigging the spinnaker pole with the rudder popping out of the water. Someone out there has a mold for the 6" longer rudder that I need and I've seen this rudder on the boat Pappy. I'm looking forward to the next time I get to talk with the previous owner of Pappy about the Wilderness 21 improvements he made. I"m going to talk with Bill at Doyle sail makers about a better mainsail and jib for upwind legs and an asymmetrical spinnaker for down wind legs without having to rig the spinnaker pole on this little boat solo. Any suggestions on improving the Wilderness 21 performance for racing would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt

Hi there Matt: I have a couple of rudders I bought for my unfinished Canting Cab Claw (formerly a J/24) project. Call my cell 510-681-4927 if you are interested in trying them out. I will even help with boat for boat testing against Blueberry if that will help you. tune Tinker. I understand your position as perhaps no one else in the fleet does. Here is why: My boat is Blueberry, the Nonsuch 22 rated PHRF 246 shown in the table extracted from the NorCal PHRF ratings. I started racing in January 2008 in the Three Bridge Fiasco, and no, I did not finish either. Race after race, I too share the experience of watching the SSS and YRA fleets sail away from me. But hey, I have a cruising version of a Finn dinghy, with standing headroom and a walk in head below. My PHRF ratingof 246 reflects all that. Sure, if I am ever a lottery winner, I might show up in Kame's Pinapple Sails loft and order a fully battened carbon main (the only sail my cat rigged boat has). I have to ask myself the follow up question: then what? Look at that PHRF table further down in this message: The two modified Cal 20's made as much as a 10% improvement in their PHRF predicted performance. They are still not rated as fast as a Santanna 22. They are still likely to finish well behind the fleet in YRA and SSS PHRF races. As I have learned in my first racing season (I have been sailing, though not racing for 61 years) wind holes and wind shifts in YRA and SSS races can produce really anomalous results. In the light air YRA Vallejo 1 race I finished boat for boat ahead of the whole Santana 22 fleet. ( OK, OK, so I played the edge of the mud with my forward looking sonar to do so....(grin)...) On the Sunday a front came through, the race back was sail shredding windy with a really nasty wind wave against me in San Pablo bay. All of the Santana 22 fleet did a horizon job on me. As for upwind performance, in the light air of the Oakland Estuary beer can races, Blueberry does rather well. On the other hand in the light air upwind race to Half Moon bay against a lumpy combination of left over swells and wind waves, no boat over PHRF 200 finished on time. Blueberry missed out by something like 20 minutes. The bottom line, for me is that I have a peaceful acceptance of my racing situation. This is the SSS, with mostly single handed sailing, with some races as double handed as well. The example of the Single Handed Transpac fleet has not been lost on me. I have a wonderful time out there, even in races like the SSS Vallejo 2 when the last two of us (the other was a Folkboat) to finish "relieved the boredom" of the race committee at the finish line. I've noticed that most Wilderness 21's sit, unloaded, a bit bow-down in the water. I'd always assumed that Chuck Burns designed it that way so that the boat would be optimal with 160 -300 pounds sitting in the cockpit. However, I can guess that if you go wandering out to the pointy end of the boat, you're going to A.) get wet and B.) wave the tail end of the boat around in the air a lot. How to fix this? No answer, except the suggestion of "never go forward of the mast". Not sure if the Wilderness is light enough to really benefit by an assymmetrical spinnaker, but you might take a close look at how the Ultimate 20's do it, and see if you can't try that out. Tinker is beautifully laid out, I must say. Thanks for the mini-tour of your boat this season.

Wing & Wing with the Symmetrical Spinnaker

Thanks for the great feedback John. I'll give you a ring about the rudder. You are right Alan, Never go forward of the mast seems to be my best bet for now. I've had some scarry instances of the boat spinning around while trying to rig the spinnaker pole solo. In the Vallejo 1-2 race going to Vallejo I flew my symmetrical spinnaker without a pole. One Clew went to right behind the roller furler on a pulley so I could let it go if needed. One Clew had two very long sheets to jibe inside the forestay. This worked very well until the wind picked up and the boat started rolling in the swells a bit too much. I kept myself and the mainsail on the other side of the boat from the spinnaker for balance. I'm big enough to balance the roll when the wind isn't too strong. Wing and Wing with the symmetrical spinnaker is a little unsafe but a nice asymmetrical rigged on a little improvised bow sprit in front of the forestay might be a little safer for downwind racing solo. I also like the way those Ultimate 20's take off on a broad reach. The Wilderness isn't much heavier than an Ultimate 20 but the keel design might not lend itself to be lifted up in the front. Upwind, that Cal 20 Can O Wopass was impressive in the YRA HDA races. With one person hiked out on the trapeze and running the symmetrical spinnaker in 20+ knot winds and great teamwork, this double handed team kicked some Wopass. I figured that with a little longer extension pole off the tiller and a trapeze, I could flatten out the Wilderness 30-45 degree heel into the wind with the sails tight. Another risky prospect that I might think about 3x before trying out. The best boat speed for the Wilderness into the wind, I've found to be at less than 25 degree heel. That flat V on the front smacks the waves if I'm heeled over too much and slows me down. I can't quite get to the right heel over angle with the sails overpowered. I roll up the front sail to 100% instead of 125% and have installed a traveller which helps a bit to control the heel over angle. I'll keep messing around to see what works. Racing against Blueberry this last year has been great for me guaging how well I'm doing with little performance tweeks. I'll see you out there. Thanks for your replies and let me know if anything comes to mind for improvements that might help.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Inboard engine available as an option. The WILDERNESS 30SX has a fractional rig. (other specific differences are unknown).

Make Catalina

Length 22.0

1975 Catalina 22 Pop Top Project Sailboat and Trailer The Catalina 22 is a popular sailboat produced by Catalina Yachts. Its hull measures 21 foot 6 inches (6.55 m), which is rounded up to 22 feet (6.7 m) for use in the model's name. First produced in 1968, it is one of the longest continuously produced sailboats in the world...Over 15000! Parts, videos and know-how are abound on the net 2005 last time previous owner had boat in water. I have never had boat in the water or was able to work on her. 2005 was the last time I was inside the cabin before preparing this listing for ebay. She has been closed up for ten years and is dirty in and out. I sprayed Windex in a few areas inside and dirt just wiped off with no scrubbing. Water, at one time, intruded around the forward hatch. Has complete set of interior cushions in gold plaid pattern. Most are in surprising good condition. NO SMELLS. One has a 1.5x1.5 inch hole in fabric that isn't seen when in place. 1 or 2 have an area of cracking vinyl. In all the noted exceptions, I don't think they would be seen or stop you from sailing PREVIOUS OWNER'S DESCRIPTION: '75 Catalina 22 pop top w/trailer • fair condition - Project boat • Swing Keel • Pop top • Sail Inventory: 2 mains, Jib (Marked San Juan works w/Cat 22s) and 150 Furling I think all are usable • Scupper upgrade in transom • Ablative paint on hull and keel • Never in salt water • Needs good cleaning • I know of no problems with the swing keel • No known leaks around keel pin • Comes with 2 Rudders. Usable but not perfect • Port side blemish in the gel coat • One pop top support needs to be re-bedded • Front hatch needs the frame reinstalled and sealed • Soft spot forward of hatch • Crack in cabin threshold but does not affect anything much • Cracks and crazing in the deck gelcoat that need filling • One stanchion base needs to be re-bedded • Small dent/crack in mast near stays, like pinched on one side at the spreaders. When raising the mast, one of the stays was caught and pulled the spreader forward. See photo. A pontoon boat repair guy told me that a braze could patch for about $25 • Needs halyards but I would get all new running rigging • Replace Hatch Boards or just cut a Plywood Hatch • Standing rigging, I am no judge but it worked when last used and it has been out of the elements since. • The forestay also has a quick-release lever purchased from Catalina Direct, along with quick-release pins for quicker and easier mast- raising and lowering. Those parts are, of course, stainless steel. • Will also include a sliding galley out of a 1984 Cat 22. It slides under the cockpit starboard seating when not in use. It has a faucet, sink, water fresh water holding tank, a drawer and a place for a small portable propane stove. I was going to sell it separately on ebay. They normally go from 150-200. TRAILER • Trailer in good shape, but could use some paint• Has 10 ft extension• Has surge brake system used for two trips since it was installed• Has Buddy Bearings• New load range 'C' tires were put on in Spring of 2010. 63 Miles total mileage as boat was towed from one of our rental homes to our house in Martinsville. No cracks or aging seen.• Extra duty bunks BTW: Good used trailers for sailboats are hard to come by. Have clear titles for boat and trailer. I have described everything I know about her to the best of my ability but I am no sailor. Somethings may be better and others may be worse. She is a project boat and sold as is. This is for local Pickup in Martinsville, Indiana (Just south of Indianapolis) An immediate non-refundable PayPal deposit of $200 is required upon purchase. Balance due in CASH when picked up. No checks or money orders of any kind. Pickup within 7 business days of end of listing. This is not an auction. Will be happy to answer questions Thanks for looking and your interest

Mainly personal effects etc. If you have any questions or wish to arrange an inspection feel free to contact me to discuss.________________________________________________________________________________ In answer to the many of the questions posed to me here are a few more details:- I've owned the boat for two years. Initially it was purchased in Houston with big plans to sail the Caribbean but life unfortunately got in the way. During that time I've refit many of the items on the boat and this is outlined above.- Yes the boat can be viewed in Key West, Florida, USA. For those that are interested message me and I'll give you the contact details of my local Key West broker.- The boat is currently Australian registered but will be de-registered as part of the sale. So the new owner can get the boat re-registered with the USCG.- Yes the boat is capable of offshore voyages, but no I wouldn't jump in this tomorrow and sail across the Pacific. Not due to any structural fault in the boat. I would add better water storage, a water maker, fit the wind vane, purchase some spare sails, fit a full bimini cover etc. before committing to such a voyage. Of course you would want to have had a lot of experience offshore before crossing the North Atlantic.- More images of the boat and the trips we've taken can be found at www.formosa46.com- No I will not trade for another boat unless someone has a similar size/condition vessel in Australia.- Yes the price is negotiable within reason as are the sale terms. Please contact me to discuss.- The boat is very well equipped with all the safety gear you could ever hope for and is in a good condition.

Perengistan, 2003

Elite graded stallion Perengistan is a masterpiece from Stavropol.  Perhaps the finest son of the late leading sire Karar, and of Pudokhan, one of Stavropol's best all-time broodmares.  Perengistan had a very successful race career in Russia before beginning his new life with Medeus.  He is a horse of great kindness and intelligence with magnificent expressive movements which he transmits to his offspring.
