High-End Yachts In Steel And Aluminum

In 1963, in the Adriatic seaport town of Ancona, Italy, Sanzio Nicolini founded Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali, a shipbuilding and refit company which became better known by its acronym “CRN.” Ignoring the trends of his competitors who built wooden yachts, Nicolini chose to use the cutting-edge materials of steel and aluminum.

CRN's yachts were large, high-end, and luxurious. His select clientele were demanding, and his projects became ever larger and more prestigious. In the 1960s CRN yachts were in the 15- to 20-meter length, and their design was instantly recognizable.

Collaboration Is Key

Throughout the 1970s, yachts made by CRN continued to grow in size as well as in reputation. The company successfully anticipated the needs of an increasingly complex market.

The Super Conero yacht was CRN’s first 23-meter yacht, and the model became popular. This led to even bigger, more prestigious yachts that were built in partnership with major designers. CRN was forging an impressive international reputation.

Nicolini also collaborated frequently with Carlo Riva, the successful boat builder of the Riva Yacht brand. This partnership of innovators had a huge influence on the entire Italian pleasure-yacht industry as well as on their own two companies. From 1970 to 1978, CRN built eight yachts for Riva.

Catering To The Ultra Wealthy

CRN built its first yacht over 45 meters in 1978. It was designed for an emir in the Middle East, and this class of clientele played an important role in the company’s trajectory over the next decade. Throughout the 1980s, CRN customers were primarily Greek tycoons and Middle Eastern royalty.   Each client sought an increasingly larger yacht, which now ranged in length from 32 to 61 meters.

In addition, CRN built a 32.8-meter yacht for the head of a famous Italian car-making dynasty. This was the first explorer-class yacht in the luxury yachting world.

Changing Times

In the 1990s, with the Gulf War and other turmoil in the Middle East, CRN’s top clients were directly affected and demand for yachts dropped. The company stayed afloat by diversifying operations to include refitting and focusing on commercial builds.

In 2002, however, CRN’s production capacity and abilities expanded greatly when they acquired the adjacent Mario Morini shipyard. It was a well-blended union, as the Morini yard had extensive experience in steel ship construction on the commercial, merchant, and military sides. The combined operation gave CRN an impressive 80,000 square meters of shipyard space, which was one of the largest in Europe.

Building Megayachts

CRN further diversified production by combining aluminum and steel vessels with new composite ones. Their megayacht lines were born, starting at 40 and 43 meters.

Working with designers Nuvolari & Lenard, they hatched the idea of producing fully customized megayachts, but with all being built on the same naval platform. Working with architectural firm Zuccon International Project in 2006, yacht size kept growing in the coming years, eventually reaching 60 meters in years 2007-2011.

In 1999, CRN became part of the Ferretti Group. CRN joined Custom Line to form Ferretti Group’s Ancona-based megayacht operation.

As part of Ferretti Group, Allied Marine is the exclusive agent for  CRN yachts  on the east coast and sells more new and used CRN yachts than any other dealer. Call 954.462.5557 today to speak to a CRN Specialist and to receive information about all the CRN yachts for sale in today’s market.

The main factor that a CRN yacht brings to its owners to be, is the spirit of a pursuit for perfection along with an undying attention to detail that even all hands involved are expertly trained and ready to participate. The finished product only comes about when you marry total tech ideas with a pulse for music and the church.

Their design team has a gift for listening to each owner’s dreams —which is the first step towards a special experience that will have you moving double the speed in brilliant style.

Each new yacht becomes a benchmark to raise the bar to, to create new plans which push the limits imposed by the space and materials. Known as pioneers of aesthetic innovations, CRN has always come up with ground-breaking designs vaunting top-of-the-line amenities that over time have become true standards of excellence in the yacht communities. One special features is the fabulously popular beach club or the multipurpose area aft on the main deck; the terraces and balconies offering never-ending views and total privacy while keeping a close eye on the seas.

This brand’s never-ending quest for gaining the highest accolades for their choice of materials and systems, or their shapes and design, challenges the standards and shoots them to the head of the future. It may seem that the yachting culture is just naturally in their blood – and —since 1963 —has always been.

Their pulse is full of Italy and overall complexion— full of beauty.

CRN – Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali – was founded in the city of Ancona — a strategic maritime center in the Mediterranean for 2400 years. Ancona, Greek for elbow, named for the unique shaped promontory where it grew, creating a hidden natural haven. A crossroads of all sorts of people, Ancona is a sweetly fine, unique place. Here, the land embraces the ocean. When your story starts out in the center of naval tradition, every project becomes the start of a wonderful journey like no other.

When designing a CRN, you will be able to order your custom masterpiece with your own heartbeat pumping through it. Through the years, the CRN team are all ready to listen to what their owners want and to set out to do it!

Take for example a look at one of their latest finished projects, Mimtee. Never-ending beauty and elegance, with perfect lines and a wonderfully designed interior, the 79-metre CRN Mimtee was designed as a family megayacht for a seasoned yacht owner. Her stunning and high-end interior — characterized by upscale settings inspired by a marine chalet and the colors of the ocean - complements the perfection of her sleek exterior lines. Marvelous open spaces perfectly laid out to provide the best for its owner’s time aboard perfect for a simple cruise and a great time spent for the entire season. When aboard this and any CRN, you can feel at ease being far away from the mainland, but close to your loved ones aboard.

Finally, CRN also offers a special refit division. With its technical expertise, years working on these skills and designing, it offers a comprehensive range of dedicated services tailored to achieve excellent, unique results every time. Because sometimes, the end of one voyage is the start of another.

About crn yachts.

Since the company’s founding in 1963, Italy’s CRN Yachts have dedicated themselves to realising their customer’s dreams. A builder of fully custom superyachts, and capable of completing designs over 300 feet in length, CRN involves the buyer at every stage of the manufacturing process, from initial concept to interior finish, in order to deliver visionary and entirely unique yachts for customers all over the world. With over 200 of their original creations currently at sea, and no two designs quite the same, a CRN yacht is truly a one-a-of-kind purchase.

More About CRN Yachts

It was Sanzio Nicolini who began CRN Yachts, or Construzioni e Riparazioni Navali, back in 1963 with a bold ambition: to craft fully-custom steel and aluminum yachts for a discerning and select clientele. Starting his business in the charming port town of Ancona on Italy’s Adriatic coast, Nicolini never compromised on his initial vision, and to this day the company delivers made-to-order and entirely unique luxury yachts to customers around the world. CRN’s initial designs were rather modest relative to the more impressive models they have produced in recent decades, starting with a 30-foot luxury yacht named the Galatea.

Yet by the 1970s and the addition of designer Carlo Riva to the team, the company was creating 125 feet long vessels that were some of the most acclaimed craft around at the time. In 1978 CRN entered the world of the megayacht, building its first yacht in excess of 150 feet for an Emir in the Middle East. Further large yachts were built for high profile clients throughout the 80s and 90s, including the pioneering and much emulated F100 for Italian business icon Gianni Agnelli, owner of the Fiat car company and Italy’s most famous soccer club, Juventus.

CRN Yachts was acquired by the Ferretti Group in 1999, though this change in ownership did not alter the firm’s commitment to crafting the very finest customer-led bespoke yachts. In fact, the increased resources that CRN could now access allowed the company to purchase an adjacent shipyard belonging to Mario Morini. This new combined shipyard in Ancona became one of Europe’s largest yacht production facilities and today stands at 860,000 square feet. This advanced shipyard is geared towards meeting the discerning client’s every need, and includes a large, dedicated hardstanding area, an elite research and development team, and 380 full-time employees with enough space to allow the engineering and design crew to work simultaneously on 15 different yachts.

CRN Yachts typically feature classic Italian style and craftsmanship interpreted in a sleek, modern manner, for a finished product that is effortlessly elegant. Due to CRN’s focus on building custom yachts to the buyer’s specification, it is no surprise that the company employs some of the world’s best designers to furnish and finish their vessels. Down the years CRN has collaborated with designers and naval architects such as Nuvolari & Lenard, Zucconi International, Gilles & Boissier, Studio Scanu, Gerhard Gilgenast and Paola Smith among others. CRN’s dynamic use of different design firms allows their customers increased latitude to pursue their dreams and construct original yachts like no other.

Vessels belonging to the CRN fleet have been admired by yacht aficionados the world over and have garnered awards from a diverse range of industry bodies and yachting experts. In 2014 the firm as a whole was awarded the “Most Achieved Trophy” for megayachts at the annual World Yachts Trophies held in Cannes, while in 2016 the M/Y Atlante, a 180-foot-long superyacht, won Robb Report’s coveted “Best of the Best” award.

CRN New Sunrise

This yacht was built in 2000 to a design by Paolo Scanu and launched as the Nvmptia before being renamed just a year later by its new owners. This 200-foot-long superyacht is a nod back to the classic designs of the 50s and 60s, but at a much larger scale and with all modern amenities. Francois Zuretti interiors feature cherry wood wall panelling, parquet floors, onyx surrounds and lavishly intricate use of fabric for a sumptuous, stately-home feel. Varnished teak decks, including a spacious upper sun deck, boast an extra-large jacuzzi, fitted sofas with a nautical color scheme, and a sheltered aft deck that is the ideal space for late night cocktails. A steel hull and aluminum superstructure ensures this yacht has a sturdy yet lightweight presence in the water, while dual Caterpillar engines generate more than 2000 horsepower and cruising speeds of almost 14 knots.

CRN Superconero

Named after CRN’s groundbreaking Superconero yacht from the late 1960s, the new Superconero model is a more than worthy inheritor of a classic name. A 164-foot yacht with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, the Superconero offers 5 levels of unparalleled luxury living space kitted out in vintage mid-century modern style. Yet there is nothing vintage about the amenities on offer here. A flooding rear tender garage has plenty of space for the next generation of water toys, while dramatic raised decks boast space for jacuzzi, an aft deck beach club with paddling pool, fold-out terrace, outdoor wet bar and a modular living space to the bow. Performance is just as impressive, with Caterpillar engines powering this vessel to a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising range of 3,800 miles.

CRN Cloud 9

Perhaps the clue is in the name. This megayacht some 242 feet in length represents the very highest of yachting aspirations, and was painstakingly designed by the CRN team to the demanding brief specified by its owner. A real dream of a boat, the Cloud 9 boasts an incredible 5 rear sun decks, from the extendable beach club at lower level and 10,000 litre spa pool on the aft deck, to a soaring fly bridge at the yacht’s lofty pinnacle. A bold aluminum superstructure of swooping lines signals this yacht’s unmatched style to onlookers, while interior spaces courtesy of Winch Designs utilise beach tones, azure blues, seaside shell and reef-coral to evoke the perfect marine atmosphere. Staterooms take on a more subdued feel, with limed oak and Douglas fir lining the floors and walls. A central, glass-encased yacht elevator is sure to catch the eye, while the yacht also has enough space for indoor and outdoor gyms, a floating tender garage and a helipad. Twin Caterpillar 3516C engines roar this yacht on to top speeds of 16.5 knots and an impressive range of 6,000 nautical miles. Certain to be talked about for years to come, CRN have absolutely scaled new and dramatic heights with Cloud 9.

CRN Releases “Comfortably Numb” Details

  • By Yachting Staff
  • February 26, 2024

CRN Comfortably Numb

CRN , a brand that is part of the Ferretti Group in Italy, has just released details about the 198-foot custom yacht Comfortably Numb .

The yacht, which was delivered in December 2022, is a fully custom aluminum build. Its design, naval architecture, engineering and construction were all handled at the Ancona Superyacht Yard.

“The shipyard’s design and build quality blends admirably with the creativity of Italian architects Nuvolari Lenard, who developed the concept for the exterior styling and interiors,” according to CRN’s team. “The result is a totally bespoke, handcrafted ship with spaces designed to offer a fantastic cruising experience, perfect for an owner family who enjoy spending long periods on board.”

CRN says the owners’ brief called for a high-performance displacement yacht. Comfortably Numb has a reduced draft and in-line propellers for cruising in the Caribbean’s shallower areas. CRN says it also developed “a system of extremely precise strain gauges to constantly monitor the vessel’s weight and center of gravity via Wi-Fi,” and the yard used lightweight cork during the application and leveling of the teak decking.

The two MTU 20V 4000 M93L engines were the first to be fitted on a CRN yacht. They are combined with a Selective Catalytic Reduction system for a reported top speed of more than 25 knots and a cruising speed of 22.5 knots. The yacht meets IMO Tier III standards. According to CRN, there’s a reduction of up to 70 percent in harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides in the engine exhaust.

Inside, the owners wanted “generous ceiling heights” with light-filled, sole-to-ceiling windows. The yacht’s gross tonnage is 1,114 with five decks, and accommodations for 12 guests. There also are quarters for 13 crew.

Since the delivery of Comfortably Numb , CRN has also launched the 237-footer known as M/Y 179. That steel-hull yacht, delivered in 2023, has a Nuvolari Lenard interior with exteriors by Valicelli Design. CRN was responsible for the naval architecture.

When did the Ancona Superyacht Yard’s operational headquarters officially open? In December 2023. Broadcom Lets HPE Use Existing VMware OEM Agreement To Provide ‘Alternative’ To Dell VxRail

'Customers that need VMware and rely on it are going to have to pay a lot more money to use it,' says an HPE VMware partner, who did not want to be identified. “Short term the HPE Broadcom OEM extension might mean some additional VMware business for us but long term we are looking for alternatives.”

crn yachts price

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has been given the green light by Broadcom to use its existing VMware OEM agreement in order to provide “an alternative solution to customers contemplating the purchase” of Dell Technologies popular VxRail product.

The CEO for an HPE partner, who received the HPE OEM extension communication and did not want to be identified, said he has always viewed Dell as having an edge in the hyperconverged market because it owned VMware.

“We typically have sold VMware licenses with HPE,” he said. “HPE still has a path for us to sell it, but I always told our teams when we were competing against Dell on VMware assume they have an inside track and act like you are starting in second place.”

The Broadcom OEM agreement extension covers HPE OEM VMware SKUs for one and three years and is “specific” to “needed HPE hardware solutions” as an “alternative to Dell’s VxRail,” according to HPE communication sent to partners, sources told CRN.

CRN reached out to HPE and Broadcom but both vendors would not comment.

The HPE agreement is only in place until the end of business on April 30 with a “no exceptions” rule. It covers VMware vSphere, vCenter, vSAN, vRealize, vCloud, VCF (VMware Cloud Foundation), NSX, Aria and HCI kits.

The HPE OEM agreement comes even as Dell Technologies is still able to sell its VxRail and VmWare Cloud Foundation on VxRail with perpetual licenses until April 30. This even after Dell said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing in February that it was killing it existing agreement with VMware in the wake of Broadcom’s $69 billion acquisition of VMware last November.

Dell partners told CRN that customers are racing to finalize perpetual licensing deals in order to avoid what they say will be as much as 30 percent price increase of Dell VxRail once the deadline passes in two weeks.

The communication on the HPE OEM extension does not include perpetual licenses but rather “applies to private offerings, ELAs (Enterprise Licensing Agreements), new support as well renewals for all VMware products HPE previously offered.”

Even with the OEM extension, HPE partners told CRN that customers are unhappy with the changes at VMware and are actively looking at alternatives. “More than 50 percent of our VMware customers have reached out to say they are concerned and they want to be aware of alternatives,” said an HPE partner, who did not want to be identified.

A top sales executive for another HPE enterprise partner said the short-term fix helps for two more weeks but the bigger issue is just what the new HPE OEM agreement will look like compared to Dell. He is hoping HPE will get more favorable terms that level the playing field with Dell.

“Short term we’ll be working to close deals on HPE because customers want to meet the April 30 deadline,” he said.

Even with a new HPE Broadcom VMware OEM agreement the sales executive said his company is looking for an alternative to VMware.

“Broadcom wants to focus on the bigger, more profitable customers,” he said. “From a financial standpoint it makes sense for them, but it leaves a lot of people in the lurch. Customers that need VMware and rely on it are going to have to pay a lot more money to use it. Short term the HPE Broadcom OEM extension might mean some additional VMware business for us but long term we are looking for alternatives.”

HPE and Dell are bitter competitors in the hyperconverged infrastructure hardware market which Dell has dominated in the wake of its acquisition of VMware in 2016 with VXRail,

Dell, in fact, generated at least $17.3 billion in revenue for VMware since 2021, and it annually provided nearly 40 percent of the virtualization giant’s sales through an ongoing partnership that was meant to last until 2026, according to regulatory filings.

In 2023, Dell dominated the hyperconverged worldwide revenue hardware market with market share of 34.7 percent ($3.55 billion) compared with 14.9 percent ($1.52 billion) for Nutanix and 9.5 percent ($967.33 million) for Hewlett Packard Enterprise, according to market researcher IDG.

In February, Dell said in the wake of the sale of VMware to Broadcom that it was killing the agreement which allowed it to act as a “distributor of VMware products and services.” Nevertheless, Dell was still able to continue to sell the co-engineered embedded solutions such as VXRail and Carbon Black.

“Broadcom and VMware solutions remain a part of Dell’s portfolio of products, including embedded solutions such as VxRail and Carbon Black,” Dell said at the time.

The HPE OEM extension does not include Carbon Black or VMware End User Compute (Horizon) offerings.

Broadcom is in the process of moving to new OEM agreements covering what it calls a “simpler product” portfolio with VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware vSphere Foundation

Broadcom Vice President of OEM Sales Ricky Cooper has told CRN that Broadcom is leveling the playing field for its OEM partners with a “reset” for Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo and others that will clear away 20 years of Byzantine agreements and thousands of SKUs in favor of simple, predictable pricing.

“It’s not fair on any of them,” Cooper told CRN of the way VMware’s past OEM deals were structured. “Because of historical relationships we've had with the likes of Dell, etc., you've got a myriad of different pricing. Nobody, I can tell you, has been on the same pricing. Everybody's different. We just need to hit the reset button and say, ‘OK, I understand where we've been, but here's where we've got to be.’”

The CEO for another VMware partner, who did not want to be identified, said he expects customers to continue to face steep price increases even with new OEM agreements.

Ultimately, Broadcom feels it has the dominant market position and can demand the higher price points, which are currently running from 30 percent to as much as 500 percent, said the CEO. “There has been a lot of noise and frustration from customers about the price increase,” he said. “Customers feel VMware is not the same company they were before.”
