H-type Nubian yacht

H-type Nubian yacht

The H-Type Nubian yacht was a sleek luxury yacht and what it lacked in weapons it made up for in style and a strong deflector shield. The signature silver finish is a mark that the ship belongs to a former member of Naboo’s monarchy. Padme Amidala used a ship like this after her J-Type diplomatic barge was destroyed in an assassins attack. It was an H-Type that whisked Padme and Anakin Skywalker from Naboo to Tatooine, and then to Geonosis where the Clone Wars would begin.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 4 Easter Eggs

This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian .

The Mandalorian kicks the doors open on Grogu’s past in “The Foundling” as well as sends Din and Bo-Katan on a dangerous rescue mission into the heart of monster territory. Both storylines lead to plenty of lore as well as callbacks to other parts of the Star Wars saga. Most importantly, we get a massive surprise guest character that will have fans of the Prequel Trilogy spitting out their morning caf.

Here are all the Star Wars easter eggs and references we found in “The Foundling”:

Kelleran Beq and Ahmed Best

For years, ever since we learned Grogu was a youngling at the Jedi Temple of Coruscant, we’ve wondered how he escaped Order 66 and who helped him along the way. In “The Foundling,” we finally learn in a flashback that it was none other than Jedi Master Kelleran Beq who got him off Coruscant, just as the clone troopers led by Anakin Skywalker were closing in.

Ad – content continues below

This Jedi Master was first introduced as the host of the kids game show Jedi Temple Challenge . Known by the nickname “Sabered Hand,” Beq was well known as an expert in lightsaber dueling, particularly in the Jar’Kai style (basically, dual-wielding blades). In Star Wars lore, Beq was in charge of helping guide Padawans through the Jedi Trials on their way to Knighthood.

Beq is of course played by Ahmed Best, who you likely know best from The Phantom Menace and the rest of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. He played the divisive Jar Jar Binks in those films as well as voiced the character in The Clone Wars animated series. “The Foundling” is Best’s first appearance in scripted Star Wars since 2014.

One last fun fact: Master Beq apparently has a relative we’ve met before in the Prequels. According to Best, his secret second character in Attack of the Clones , Achk Med-Beq, a patron at the Outlander Club where Obi-Wan and Anakin are searching for Zam Wesell, is somehow related to Master Beq, although there’s no official lore supporting that except that both Beq characters obviously look exactly alike and share similar last names.

You can read much more about Kelleran Beq here .

Order 66 and the Jedi Temple

We’ve revisited Order 66 and the Siege at the Jedi Temple a few times in recent years, but here’s a brief refresher: In Revenge of the Sith , Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (also known as Sith Lord Darth Sidious) instructs the Clone Army to “execute Order 66,” a secret plan to exterminate all the Jedi Knights in the galaxy. A very grim montage shows us as clone troopers turn on their Jedi commanders, shooting them down, firing squad style, across the galaxy.

Meanwhile, Anakin Skywalker, who’s just been baptized as Palpatine’s new Sith apprentice, Darth Vader, leads a clone battalion into the Jedi Temple on Coruscant to kill all who are inside, including the younglings. Fortunately, Grogu makes it out alive before Anakin can find him. If you want to see this siege from yet another perspective, check out Reva’s story in Obi-Wan Kenobi .

Adonai Kryze, Bo-Katan’s Father

Bo-Katan ‘s mentioned her father a few times at this point, so here’s what we know about him: his name was Adonai Kryze and he was Duke of Mandalore until he was killed during one of the many civil wars fought on the planet. He was succeeded by his daughter, Duchess Satine Kryze, a pacifist leader who sought to reform Mandalorian culture away from their warrior creed, something Bo-Katan strongly opposed in The Clone Wars animated series. In other words, Adonai’s death during a civil war led to…another civil war on Mandalore just a few years later.

Republic Gunship/LAAT

The first of three ships from the Prequels that appear in the episode, the Republic Gunship (aka the Low Altitude Assault Transport, or LAAT) made its debut in Attack of the Clones as the main vehicle used by clone troopers to drop into the battlefield on Geonosis. These ships were armed with several laser cannons that offered air support while troopers on the ground pushed forward.

H-type Nubian Yacht From Attack of the Clones

More commonly known as the Naboo yacht is another ship first introduced in Attack of the Clones . It was the ship flown by Senator Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker during their visits to Tatooine and Geonosis. Padme also flew this ship throughout The Clone Wars animated series.

Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing Starfighters

Those starfighters chasing Beq and Grogu out of Coruscant look and sound like proto-TIE fighters, but they’re actually called “V-wings.” They were the short-ranged starfighters used by the Clone Army in the final years of the Clone Wars. While they first appeared onscreen in Revenge of the Sith , they were actually first mentioned in the movie’s prequel novel Labyrinth of Evil by James Luceno.

Naboo Royal Guard

The brave security force that comes to Beq and Grogu’s aid during their escape from Coruscant is the Naboo Royal Guard, who protect the leaders of Naboo as well as the planet’s citizens. They first appeared in The Phantom Menace .

501st Clone Battalion

Clone troopers obviously play a big part in the flashback portion of the episode, as they’re the ones executing the siege on the Jedi Temple. This battalion in particular is the 501st Clone Battalion, which was the legion led by Anakin, his apprentice Ahsoka Tano, and Captain Rex throughout the Clone Wars. This battalion was later reorganized into the 501st Legion under the Empire and served Darth Vader. They were even nicknamed “Vader’s Fist.”

There’s Always a Bigger Fish: Raptors, Stone Crabs, and Dino Turtles

Several creatures show up in this episode. There are the tricky little stone crabs, who retreat into their rock-like shells when Grogu picks them up (undoubtedly to try and eat them), as well as the return of the massive “dinosaur turtle” from “The Apostate.” We’re also introduced to raptors, which look like the Star Wars version of wyverns.

As what we assume is a fun little nod to The Phantom Menace , when the injured raptor comes crashing down into that lake, a dinosaur turtle immediately rises up to feast on it. Reminds us of Qui-Gon Jinn’s old saying: “There’s always a bigger fish.”

Grogu receives a rondel as his next piece of Mudhorn armor. This seems to be one of the earliest bits of armor given to a Mandalorian initiate, although it’s the first we’ve heard of it. Real-world knights and soldiers wore rondels to protect vulnerable points in their armor back in the Middle Ages.

The Mandalorian Finally Reveals Grogu's Backstory - And It Makes Sense

The biggest Star Wars question about The Mandalorian's Grogu is who rescued him from the Jedi Temple, and the answer makes perfect story sense.

The following contains spoilers for The Mandalorian Season 3, Episode 4, "Chapter 20: The Foundling," now streaming on Disney+.

After the 20th chapter of the Star Wars series, one of the biggest lingering mysteries on The Mandalorian now has an answer. Not only do fans know who rescued Grogu from the Jedi Temple, but the youngling's Order 66 history makes sense.

In Season 2, viewers got a sense of Grogu's history through Ahsoka. She told Din Djarin that he was raised at the Jedi temple until it fell on the first "Empire Day." After that, Grogu suppressed his Force abilities to survive. After spending about two years with Luke Skywalker , Grogu has reconnected with his previous training and improved his Force skills. He's more mobile and doesn't tire as easily when calling on the Force. However, about 25 years prior, Grogu was even younger. Unable to defend himself against the Clone Trooper onslaught, other Jedi gave their lives for his. Eventually, he was rescued by Kelleran Beq, a Jedi who had some connection with Naboo to rescue the younglings. The newly revealed details of Grogu's backstory fit well with what was previously known.

RELATED: The Mandalorian Season 3 Guide: News, Easter Eggs, Reviews, Theories & Rumors

Who Is Kelleran Beq, and Why Did He Rescue Grogu From Order 66?

Kelleran Beq, the Jedi played by Ahmed Best, is not exactly a new character. He was featured in the Star Wars kids' production Jedi Temple Challenge . He was known as "the Sabered Hand" and loved Jedi trials. Naturally, this appearance isn't precisely "canon" to the larger Star Wars universe. However, on The Mandalorian , viewers saw what the Sabered Hand could do. He survived an onslaught more intense than many Jedi Council members who fell during Order 66 . He was likely integral to the training of younglings like Grogu.

Grogu was not supposed to be the only youngling saved from the Temple, as evidenced by Beq's conversation with Naboo soldiers. Yet, Grogu enjoyed a lot of protection before reaching the Jedi Master. Four Jedi stood between him and the Clone Troopers, with all four falling before the turbolift he entered made it out of the bowels of the temple. It's possible that these Jedi were just dedicated to saving whomever they could. Yet, the number of Knights protecting Grogu suggests he may have a larger importance to the order. Perhaps it's simply the rarity of his species.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Grogu's rescue from the Jedi Temple was that Kelleran Beq had help. The uniforms, weapons and ship involved strongly suggest a connection to Naboo. Naturally, fans think of Padmé Amidala, but Palpatine is also from Naboo. Perhaps he orchestrated a plan to save kids with "high M-counts" for his ultimate plan.

Did Padmé Amidala Help Grogu and Kelleran Beq Escape the Jedi Temple?

Despite how closely the ships resemble each other, Grogu's rescue ship is not the Royal Starfighter seen in The Phantom Menace . The Darth Vader comics from Marvel revealed that the ship ended up in Palpatine's possession. He made a gift of it to his apprentice. The ship could've been the H-type Nubian yacht, used by Padmé as a senator. In Revenge of the Sith, she uses a different ship to go to Mustafar. She could've directed her office to help before or after Anakin told her about the "plot" by the Jedi.

The Nubian yacht could just belong to someone who can afford expensive starships. The presence of Kelleran Beq, or more specifically Ahmed Best, could even suggest a Gungan connection. While fans are calling this a "redemption" for Best, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni may have bigger ideas. They may also be trying to rehabilitate the Gungans for older Star Wars fans. Filoni expertly constructs stories that build on the foundations of the prequels, changing the way some people see them. It's even possible that Kelleran Beq and Jar Jar Binks himself are friends because as one of Naboo's representatives, he would have access to that ship, too.

This could be the only bit of Grogu's history that The Mandalorian reveals , but it's still just a part of the 25 years between Order 66 and when Din finds him. Viewers will likely see Beq again, getting more answers about who helped him rescue Grogu. However, it's also possible that this particular sequence is all that matters to the story now. Grogu may or may not be a Jedi, but he's training to become one of the Children of the Watch. His new family and friends may be more important than the ones he left behind. Still, it's likely not the last Star Wars fans have seen of Kelleran Beq.

The Mandalorian debuts new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.

Senator Padmé Amidala used several H-types during the Fall of the Republic, which bore silver coating to denote her status as former Queen of Naboo. One was flown from Naboo to Tatooine to help Anakin Skywalker find his mother, and then to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi; others were used during the Battle of the Kaliida Nebula and her mission to Rodia, though in both cases the yachts were destroyed owing to unfortunate circumstances.

The vessel was unarmed in accordance with the peaceful culture of Naboo . The yacht only required a small crew and Padmé could pilot the ship on her own from the cockpit in the central area of the yacht's upper section. Below the cockpit were maintenance consoles, the Class 0.9 Nubian 150 hyperdrive core and stores to contain supplies and astromech droids . The lower and upper levels were connected by a turbolift platform, situated before the lounge and crew bunks on the upper level. At the front section of the lower level was Padmé's bedroom which could serve as a portable throne room. The ship featured a powerful shield system, an array of electronic countermeasures, a slim, narrow profile and sheltered engines giving a small sensor signature for evading pursuits. It also featured a breakaway escape pod

History [1] Edit [ ]

Though originally constructed for the Royal House, the yacht was not assigned to a member of Naboo's royalty. Instead, it was given to Senator Padmé Amidala after a failed assassination attempt on Coruscant resulted in the destruction of her Naboo Royal Cruiser .

[2] The Naboo Yacht lands in a docking bay on Tatooine . Naboo Yachts were the smallest non-fighter craft in the Theed Hangars, and they were primarily employed as getaway vessels as they were much faster than most civilian ships. With Senator Amidala at the helm of one of these vessels, even the N-1 starfighters of the Royal Naboo Security Forces had difficulty keeping pace.

On the eve of the Clone Wars , Amidala returned to Naboo in secret, escorted by Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker . Skywalker was compelled to leave Naboo to return to his home planet of Tatooine , and Padmé joined him, both traveling in a Naboo Yacht. Following his mother's death and his retaliation against the Sand People , R2-D2 received a distress signal from Obi-Wan Kenobi .

Amidala and Skywalker traveled in the yacht to Geonosis in a failed attempt to rescue Kenobi. It was on Geonosis that the opening battle of the Clone Wars was fought, plunging the Galaxy into three years of warfare.

The yachts continued to serve Amidala during the early years of the Clone Wars, transporting her to such places as Ilum . Captain Gregar Typho , Yoda , and the Senator journeyed there to rescue two Jedi from the crystal temple and prevent a Confederacy conspiracy at the Battle of Ilum .

[3] Padmé Amidala's yacht captured in Malevolence's tractor beam.

After Senator Amidala had gone to see Ziro the Hutt to try to reopen communication with Jabba the Hutt, Ziro captured the senator to sell to Viceroy Gunray. When she was imprisoned, she tricked the battle droid into anwering a call on her comlink from C-3PO. She told C-3PO that she was being held by Ziro the Hutt and to get help. Latter C-3PO arrived at Ziro's palace in the Royal Yacht with members of the Coruscant Guard to free the senator.

Several of Senator Amidala's H-type yachts suffered misfortunes. After being led into a trap near the Kaliida Shoals Medical Center by Darth Sidious , the Senator and the yacht she was traveling in were captured by the Malevolence . In an attempt to stop General Grievous , Padmé set the engines to overload. The ship exploded, although Grievous escaped unscathed.

The senator used another H-type yacht to travel to Rodia to assist in a food crisis on the planet. Padmé was captured by CIS forces when Onaconda Farr yielded to the Separatist's terms. While the yacht was parked, however, it was destroyed by Jar Jar Binks when he clumsily activated a magnetic loading arm above the craft, causing it to smash through the ship to the floor of the landing bay.

Padmé and Jar Jar later traveled to Naboo, again using an H-type yacht to investigate the presence of battle droids on her homeworld, which led to the discovery of the recreation of the Blue Shadow Virus .

Along with this ship, Amidala would also use a J-Type Naboo star skiff .

Exodus Revival [ ]

Now in prodcution for Naboo royals it has found a popular revival with the young in partiuclar. Current owners of H-Types include Krista Mire' and the Princess Tisa and her mother Malloy's Benifica Tisa.

The Mandalorian Season 3's Major Jedi Reveal Explained

Ahmed Best, Kelleran Beq, The Mandalorian

Warning - this article contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 4 of The Mandalorian .

Chapter 20 of The Mandalorian included an important flashback sequence about what happened to Grogu during Order 66 and the Jedi that saved him.

Since the very first episode of The Mandalorian in 2019, fans have had a multitude of questions regarding Grogu .

The second episode of the series revealed that he is Force-sensitive, but beyond that, the character has been shrouded in mystery for the entirety of the first two-and-a-half seasons, barring a brief scene in Season 2 that confirmed he was at the Jedi Temple during Order 66.

One of the trailers for Season 3 teased that Grogu's past would be uncovered at some point during the current batch of episodes when a shot of the Jedi Temple was included.

However, the latest episode went even further than expected and actually revealed the Jedi that saved him.

The Jedi That Saved Grogu

Jedi, The Mandalorian

When the flashback sequence started in Chapter 20, multiple Jedi shielded Grogu from the incoming clone troopers that were storming the Jedi Temple during Order 66.

Unfortunately, the clones were too overpowering for the Jedi, but they did manage to get Grogu into an elevator that sent him straight down to someone named "Kelleran."

Ahmed Best, Kelleran Beq, The Mandalorian

When the doors of the elevator opened, Jedi Master Kelleran Beq quickly pulled Grogu out. This Jedi was played by none other than Star Wars veteran Ahmed Best, the actor that most notably portrayed Jar Jar Binks in the prequel trilogy.

Although this marks the canon debut for Best's Kelleran Beq, the Jedi Master was actually created as the fictional host of the Jedi Temple Challenge children's game show that was created for Star Wars Kids.

After Grogu left the elevator with his new Jedi companion, the fighting didn't stop.

Another group of clones rounded the corner of the Temple and opened fire in the direction of Beq and Grogu, but Beq quickly pulled out two lightsabers and defended them both before jumping on a speeder and fleeing the Temple grounds.

An Attack of the Clones Easter Egg

Republic LAAT Gunships, The Mandalorian

As Beq and Grogu sped through the busy traffic lanes of Coruscant, they were chased by two LAAT gunships, each carrying a fair number of clone troopers.

Beq was able to lead one into a tunnel and cause it to crash, but their speeder had taken on some damage.

Beq and Grogu continued through Coruscant and actually drove past Umate, the peak of the highest mountain on Coruscant that was showcased in Chapter 19 when Dr. Pershing and Elia Kane were walking through Level 5127.

While still being chased by a LAAT gunship, Beq and Grogu fly toward a landing platform where they have a rough landing.

H-Type Nubian Yacht, Clone Troopers, The Mandalorian

Sitting on the platform was an H-Type Nubian Yacht, which is an extremely high-class ship built specifically for the Royal House of Naboo.

This ship also served to be a bit of an Easter egg, as it is the same type of ship that Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker used in Attack of the Clones when they travel to Tatooine and Geonosis.

After hitting the landing platform, some members of the Royal Naboo Security Forces ask Best about "the others" from the Jedi Temple that made it out alive, to which he replied by saying, "There are no others."

The LAAT gunship landed shortly after Beq and Grogu. They began taking out the Naboo Security Forces as Beq quickly fired up the Nubian Yacht so he and Grogu could escape.

After taking some fire to their rear deflector shields, Beq and Grogu successfully made it out of Coruscant's atmosphere and jumped to hyperspace.

Where is Kelleran Beq Taking Grogu?

Kelleran Beq, Ahmed Best, Grogu, The Mandalorian

Unfortunately, the flashback in The Mandalorian 's latest episode ended before it was revealed where Beq ultimately takes Grogu following their escape from Coruscant.

However, there are a few possibilities that previous Star Wars series have introduced that could explain how Grogu stayed hidden for so many years until he was a bounty target for Din Djarin.

It is unlikely that Beq would take Grogu to be in the long-term care of another Jedi. After all, Beq himself had the rank of Jedi Master and was well-known for taking care of and helping Padawans before Order 66.

However, it is equally unlikely that Beq would keep Grogu in his care, even if he would be able to offer the best protection. Beq likely knows that the newly formed Empire is now on the hunt for all remaining Jedi, so he already probably realized that Grogu would be in danger just by being with him.

So, where does Beq take Grogu?

Obi-Wan Kenobi's The Path

Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Path

One of the most important plot points of Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series was the Path.

When Obi-Wan and Leia found themselves on the planet Mapuzo, they were introduced to the Path by Tala Durith.

Described as a sort of underground network, the Path was able to safely smuggle Jedi from planet to planet after Order 66 and keep them out of the eyes of the Empire.

Even though that network would not have been created or in operation at the time that Beq and Grogu were fleeing, there was a character mentioned in Obi-Wan Kenobi in relation to the Path that could have helped Grogu.

Quinlan Vos Meets Grogu

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Quinlan Vos

Ahsoka Tano stated in Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian that Grogu was hidden from the Empire after Order 66 and that his past was dark and fearful.

If Beq does have knowledge of the Path and meets up with Quinlan Vos to get Grogu to safety, he could be the first person transported through the underground network.

It was revealed in Obi-Wan Kenobi that Quinlan spent time smuggling younglings to safety through the path.

The Path, Obi-Wan Kenobi

This would line up perfectly with Ahsoka's comments, as it would be understandable for a child such as Grogu to be afraid of being moved around by people he wasn't familiar with.

This would also explain the fact that he was hidden from the Empire since he was taken off Coruscant.

It is also important to remember that these Star Wars shows on Disney+ are currently trying to maintain a certain continuity between them.

Even though Obi-Wan Kenobi isn't technically a part of the MandoVerse, having the connective tissue between the two shows by Grogu using the Path would make sense.

When Will Grogu's Next Flashback Occur?

Grogu, The Mandalorian

Grogu's past is slowly being revealed over the course of The Mandalorian .

That being said, there is a chance that Season 3 will not include any more flashback scenes answering any of the remaining questions.

However, as time progresses the truth will eventually be uncovered. It is possible that Beq actually did end up keeping Grogu and taking care of him, but it is not likely.

One also has to wonder whether Kelleran Beq is still out there and if he managed to evade the Empire for the roughly 28 years between Order 66 and the start of The Mandalorian , but only time will tell.

Season 3, Episode 4 of The Mandalorian is available to stream on Disney+.

'The Mandalorian' Season 3 Episode 4 Easter Eggs

Disney continues to deliver all the plentiful lore.

Editor's Note: The following contains minor spoilers from Season 3 Episode 4 of The Mandalorian. In " Chapter 20: The Foundling ," our attention turns back to Din Djarin ( Pedro Pascal ) and Grogu. With Bo-Katan Kryze ( Katee Sackhoff ), they grow closer to the Children of the Watch, training and fighting in tandem. It's the shortest of the third season thus far, but this episode of The Mandalorian still packs in plenty of hidden connections. This is the way.

The titular moniker of the episode, foundlings are the central focus of this episode. Now that Din and Bo-Katan have rejoined the Children of the Watch, where the Mandalorians are currently training their children, Grogu finds himself in the friendly company of other foundlings. "It's time that you learn with the other foundlings." Din insists that Grogu begins further training, and Grogu immediately showcases formidable ability. Wesley Kimmel (nephew of talk show host Jimmy Kimmel ) returns as Ragnar Vizsla, Grogu's training opponent and the foundling taken by a pterosaur creature.

Mandalorian Weaponry

As the training ensues, many familiar weapons are wielded. Vibroblades, commonly on hand for Mandalorians, swipe and slash about. There are EE-3 carbine rifles, popularized by the bounty hunter Boba Fett himself, and even Grogu takes up Mandalorian weaponry in the form of training darts.

The Peaks of Kyrimorut

When plotting Ragnar's rescue, Bo-Katan boasts confidence in the mission thanks to her training. The pterosaur has taken Ragnar to a high mountain peak which they'd have to scale to avoid detection. She refers to her experience climbing the peaks of Kyrimorut, which was a remote stronghold on the planet Mandalore . During the Clone Wars, it even served as a place of refuge for clone troopers that chose to leave the Grand Army of the Republic.

Shriek-hawks

Speaking of pterosaurs, the sigil of the Shriek-hawk can be seen borne by the Mandalorian members of Clan Vizsla, including the kidnapped Ragnar, and his father Paz Vizsla (Tait Fletcher). A Shriek-hawk was a bird-like predator on Mandalore, and the sigil depicts the creature in a downward position, evoking how the beast would dive for prey.

As The Armorer uses the Forge in front of Grogu, she calls it the heart of Mandalorian culture. "The Forge can reveal weaknesses." As it smashes down upon the beskar, the imagery sends Grogu into a flashback of past trauma. Giving a deeper look into the events of Revenge of the Sith , Grogu remembers his escape from Coruscant. After Palpatine commanded the execution of Order 66 , the clone troopers turned on every Jedi, including the younglings.

Temuera Morrison

You'll always recognize that voice. After starring as Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones , Temuera Morrison returned to the world of Star Wars in both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett as the legendary bounty hunter. Because Jango Fett served as the blueprint for the entire clone army, Morrison voiced and visually portrayed each clone trooper in the prequel films. He's returned here to once again voice the soldiers as they execute Order 66.

In a triumphant return to Star Wars , actor Ahmed Best takes on the role of Kelleran Beq, a Jedi Master tasked with supervising young Padawans. Best played Jar Jar Binks in all three prequel films, and has expressed to fans immense gratitude for the warm welcome back into the Star Wars world. During the flashback, this Jedi is revealed to have been the key to Grogu's escape. Thanks to the aid of the Royal Naboo Security forces, Kelleran and Grogu are able to speed away into hyperspace, surviving the doom of Order 66.

The Peak of Umate

As Grogu and his Jedi savior Kelleran Beq race to evacuate Coruscant, we get all the familiar scenery of the city-covered planet, the iconic backdrop of the Star Wars prequels. We also get a glimpse of the peak of Umate, the highest mountain beneath the city structure and the only part of the planet's surface that remains uncovered. This visually ties The Mandalorian to the first three Star Wars episodes, as we encountered this peak one episode prior with Dr. Pershing.

H-Type Nubian Yacht, LAATs, & V-Wings

Iconic Star Wars spacecraft are plentiful throughout Grogu's flashback. An H-type Nubian yacht was first made famous in The Phantom Menace when it brought Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padme Amidala to Tatooine to meet a young Anakin Skywalker. In this episode, it serves as the escape vessel for Grogu and Kelleran Beq. The Low Altitude Assault Transport (LAAT) was the main transport for the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Fans may recall Jedi Master Yoda's ride along in a LAAT in Attack of the Clones , and there's something sinisterly ironic about these gunships now pursuing Grogu. After he and Kelleran leave Coruscant's surface in the Nubian yacht, a fleet of V-wings joins in pursuit. As seen before in the prequel films and Star Wars: The Clone Wars , Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing starfighters were early precursors to TIE fighters, their silhouette echoed in the latter's design.

Clan Mudhorn

When Grogu snaps out of his flashback, The Armorer completes the gift she's made for him. It's tradition for Mandalorians to donate portions of the beskar that they earn to the foundlings, and Grogu's first piece of armor from the Forge bears the sigil of Clan Mudhorn, the new Mandalorian clan formed by Din Djarin. Toward the end of the first season, Din is attacked by mudhorn, a large horned beast. He's saved by Grogu and his ever-increasing Force sensitivity, so the mudhorn makes for a fitting sigil.

Callback to Qui-Gon

After the Mandalorians successfully rescue the foundling from the grips of the pterosaur, the giant beast pursues them back toward their refuge. However, the manner in which they're saved marks a clever callback to The Phantom Menace , when the crocodile-like creature from earlier this season bursts from the water, consuming the pterosaur predator. "There's always a bigger fish," as Qui-Gon Jinn would say.

Visions of The Mythosaur

At the end of the episode, The Armorer brings Bo-Katan to the Forge so that she may repair the beskar pauldron for her shoulder. Their conversation conveys a growing trust between the two, with Bo-Katan opening up more comfortably. After requesting a Mythosaur sigil , which The Armorer assures belongs to all Mandalorians, Bo-Katan confides in her the experience of witnessing the legendary beast. Potentially causing Bo-Katan to question her recollection, The Armorer tells her she'd be very lucky to have such a vision. "When you choose to walk the Way of the Mand'alor, you will see many things."

The Mandalorian S3 Episode 4 Review and Breakdown: The Foundling

The Mandalorian S3 Episode 4, “The Foundling” shows how good of a leader Bo-Katan can be. Also, the big question regarding Grogu’s escape from the Jedi Temple is finally answered!

Recap of the story so far

Dr. Pershing feels grateful about receiving a new opportunity in the New Republic. However, his desire to continue his research makes him fall into a trap set up by Elia Kane, an Imperial Officer that also served on Moff Gideon’s ship.

Din Djarin and Bo-Katan bathed in the Living Waters of Mandalore , this redeemed both of them. Din is considered once again a Mandalorian, and Bo-Katan is a Children of the Watch until she wishes to leave.

Mandalorian Training

As soon as the episode begins, we see every member of the covert doing some combat training, from the foundlings to the grown-ups. It might not look like anything fancy but this training is what has allowed them to survive cataclysmic events since the Old Republic times.

Mandalorians were once the most feared warriors in the galaxy, there was a time when even Jedi and Sith would think twice before getting into a conflict with the people of Mandalore. With the exception of Tarre Vizsla and Grogu, no other Mandalorian has been force-sensitive. For almost everyone, this would make it impossible to compete against a Force user.

The abnormal strength, speed, and reflexes in combination with a lightsaber is what make Jedi and Sith the most legendary warriors to ever exist. To be able to compete with such gifted individuals Mandalorians had to master every weapon, tactic, and combat style available.

I can’t emphasize enough how good of a combatant someone must be to even last a few seconds against a lightsaber wielder that can also use the Force. Imagine not only fighting at such a disadvantage and still coming out on top. This is why Mandalorians are so respected and feared, even when their numbers have reduced so drastically.

Size Matters Not

Like most people, I have a soft spot for Grogu. Watching him walk, jump or do anything that’s physically demanding always makes me giggle. His size, small age, and docile nature make Grogu look like the least threatening being wherever he goes. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Every wise warrior knows to never underestimate an enemy regardless of how it looks, this is a hard lesson that many learn the hard way. Ragnar is not the first and certainly not the last person to underestimate our favorite little green friend.

As Grogu continues to learn and train, he’s slowly becoming more resourceful and powerful. Sure, he might be among the cutest things in Star Wars but eventually, his strength will be able to overcome almost anyone.

His journey as a Mandalorian is just beginning, there are many trials that he must complete before achieving the full status of a warrior of Mandalore. As the Beskar molded by the Armorer, Grogu will have to adapt, evolve and overcome his weaknesses.

If what’s left of the Empire still wants Grogu then they will return, last time it was Moff Gideon and everybody almost died. Whether he’s in custody or not doesn’t matter at all, as powerful as Gideon could be he’s only one more head waiting to be replaced. Moff Gideon is a formidable opponent, but he’s probably not the worst the Empire (or what’s left of it) can send after Din Djarin and Grogu.

Saving Grogu

Order 66 scenes are always intriguing and painful to watch, but that doesn’t mean that it’s less exciting to learn the point of view of different Jedi. The younglings, the masters that died defending the temple, those who were on missions when it happened, etc.

We still don’t understand how Grogu managed to survive for so many years but at least we’ve learned how he managed to escape the temple and Coruscant.

Many Jedi Knights died making sure that he could leave the temple unharmed but it was one Jedi Master that got him out. Kelleran Beq is a Jedi Master that supervised Padawans as they progressed through their trials; I would think that his bond with the younglings is stronger than most.

With the help of the Royal Naboo Security Forces, Beq managed to escape and secure one of the most important members of the Jedi Order. If the Naboo soldiers were already waiting for him then it means that someone acted incredibly fast to coordinate this escape.

The Jedi Order has many allies but few would dare to interfere with the Grand Army of the Republic. The only person that comes to my mind is Padmé Amidala, being the Naboo representative on Coruscant no one else other than the Queen herself could give such a tall order.

This would mean that she did more than what we saw in Revenge of the Sith. When she sees the Jedi Temple in flames Padmé breaks down but we know that she’s a woman of action, no matter the circumstances. Anakin Skywalker led Operation Knightfall but maybe the former Queen of Naboo decided to save as many lives as possible.

Getting out of the temple is one thing, but that’s only the first step. Order 66 marked the end of an era, after that day no Jedi was entirely safe. No matter how much they hide, the Empire would always hunt them down.

Yoda, Obi-Wan, Quinlan Vos, Cal Kestis, Ahsoka Tano, and a few more were able to escape but not without being hunted relentlessly by Darth Vader and his Inquisitors. I can’t wait to learn about the adversities that Grogu had to face.

Now, the main question is; What happened to Kelleran Beq?

Natural Leader

Bo-Katan Kryze is a cold-headed woman, she’s still a fierce warrior but unlike many other Mandalorians, she doesn’t let the heat of the battle remove her ability to think critically and make smart choices.

Obviously, she has a long list of failures that will haunt her for a long time. But pretty much every character worthy of remembering has experienced defeat and disappointment. As Yoda perfectly puts it: failure is the greatest teacher.

When Ragnar is taken by the giant reptavian creature she follows it on the Gauntlet Fighter and locates the nest. Bo-Katan knows what she’s doing, the training she received as a young princess has prepared her for any kind of situation.

No one questions her experience or leadership. Not even Paz Vizsla, who isn’t fond of Din Djarin or Bo-Katan. The life of his son might be at risk, but he understands that relying on someone who’s more experienced is the best chance he has to recover his son.

The former princess of Mandalore has been around for a short period of time and she has already saved a foundling, the highest achievement according to the creed. Not only that but she has provided the covert with three creatures that could become powerful war beasts in the future.

I have no doubt that this has earned her the trust and respect of everyone. Which is no easy feature considering we’re talking about Mandalorians. Perhaps by getting others’ trust she’ll regain her own confidence.

It was odd that Bo-Katan told the Armorer about the Mythosaur. Obviously, she thought that it was some metaphor or vision, not the actual creature. But can we blame her? A Mythosaur hasn’t been seen in thousands of years.

The Living Waters have different properties and deep significance for the Children of the Watch. This makes it even harder to believe Bo-Katan’s claims. However, the Armorer has always been very cryptic. She only says what’s necessary when the time is right, I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t react to seeing the Mythosaur face to face.

Chapter 20 “The Foundling Easter Eggs

This episode’s easter eggs are all related to the prequel trilogy. We also witness the return of an actor that has been in Star Wars for more than twenty years.

Redemption Arc

Kelleran Beq is played by Ahmed Best. Some might not recognize him but he’s the actor that played Jar Jar Binks in the prequel trilogy. This role made him receive a lot of undeserving hate.

Ahmed returned to play Kelleran Beq in the Jedi Temple Challenge children series . These videos show Beq guiding Padawans in their quest to become Jedi.

Coruscant Guard

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is the first time that we’ve seen the Coruscant Guard involved in Operation Knightfall. Every previous scene only showed the 501st Legion. The Coruscant Guard is a division made of elite shock troopers designated to protect important places and people like the Senate and Chancellor Palpatine.

Naboo Starship

Master Beq and Grogu escape aboard an H-type Nubian yacht, the same ship that Padmé and Anakin used in Attack of the Clones.
