motor yacht haida

The impressive 71m classic motor yacht Haida 1929 was originally built by Krupp Germaniawerft for millionaire Max C. Fleischmann (1877-1952) following plans drafted by the New York naval architects Cox and Stevens. The ship was constructed to be exceptionally strong in order to serve for long scientific, fishing, and pleasure cruises in the Pacific waters off the Californian coast.

Haida 1929 has twice visited the Pendennis yard in Falmouth for refit works. She first arrived in the summer of 2011 as Dona Amélia for a short four-month refit programme, which mainly consisted of an engineering survey and an overhaul of 15 tanks, revitalising the teak decks, and upgrading the AV systems and galley equipment.

A specialist team with relevant uncompromising classic yacht experience was chosen for the project. Working closely with Edmiston Yacht Management and interior designer Adam Lay, the Pendennis team applied their expertise in yacht restoration to undertake a painstakingly detailed 18-month refit programme. A considered approach was taken from the outset to restore her former glory whilst improving her for the new Owner’s use.

Review of the hull revealed extensive fabrication work was required to rebuild the structural integrity of the vessel, with over 100 tons replaced in total. Further structural changes included extending the Sun Deck to provide a much larger al fresco dining area and strengthening works down through three deck levels to cater to the considerably larger bathing pool which replaced the small dip pool. The davits were also moved, reinstated to their original midships position.

The biggest change to the interior was the addition of a Hammam spa, massage room and hairdressing parlour, replacing a storage area. The interior joinery, lighting and portholes were upgraded and refurbished, three new fireplaces were installed to create a romantic ambience, the interiors refreshed using cool Italian marbles in the bathrooms and complemented by elegant soft furnishings in a more modern yet sympathetic palette.

When built the yacht was equipped with mammoth twin diesel engines that still propel her to this day. It is thought that these may be the oldest working engines of their type still in their original situ. However, with no records or manuals from their construction, servicing these was perhaps the most challenging task in the refit. Despite these engines being slow to respond and therefore making Haida complex to manoeuvre, it was a key requirement that these engines were maintained as the ‘heart’ of the vessel. The Pendennis engineering team painstakingly deconstructed the engines, hoisting cumbersome parts and huge pistons individually up though the central funnel to be serviced on site. Once reinstated the engines were painted in the same hue as the hull, creating a dramatic statement.

A Refit for the Ages

Adam Lay had never seen anything like it. Not during the nearly eight years he spent working for yacht designer John Munford, and not since he opened his own studio in Britain in 2013. “This owner had spent a year before he even bought the boat designing what the interior was going to be like,” Lay says. “He handed me three Apple iBooks of everything that he wanted through the boat. He’d sorted it out and planned it all out. He’d sit in hotel rooms doing sketches.” Lay, working for 18 months with a refit team of nearly 160 people plus another 20 to 30 crew at the Pendennis yard in Falmouth, made the owner’s vision a reality. The 233-foot Haida 1929 left the shipyard this year and entered the charter market with Edmiston, making her what is arguably the most prestigious classic yacht available for bookings today. Haida 1929 is expected to cruise the Caribbean this winter on her original engines, which are believed to be the oldest working diesels of their type still in their original location. Pendennis had to rebuild them without manuals or spare parts, assigning a team of eight people to the power plants alone.

haida 1929 refit

“We had to do things like rebuild the governors, which ran on old steam-engine principles,” says Mike Carr, Pendennis managing director. “It was really interesting stuff. And we couldn’t get them out of the boat. Everything had to be done in the boat because of the weight of the heavy steel castings.”

Another major element of the refit was adding a sun-deck spa tub. Parts of the superstructure are wood, Carr says, and it does not offer the structural integrity required for the extra load. So, Pendennis and Lay devised pillars that run down four decks, to the bilge, as a hidden support structure.

“They go through the owner’s bathroom, for instance, and they look like part of the décor,” Lay says. “And in the library, on the main deck, they run through the bookcases. We hid them behind books. And in the guest cabins, they disappeared into the corners of the cabins. It was very difficult to find those spaces.”

The owner considered even the smallest details, Lay says, including the manufacturers of gel fireplaces that were added to create an Old World ambience.

“He wanted only Lora Piana fabrics — he went to Milan and sourced them himself,” Lay says. “We received an envelope full of fabrics that he’d chosen in the showroom.”

The restoration makes Haida 1929 one of the most unique yachts available for charter in the world. She has chartered before, in the early 1990s, according to Alex Busher at Edmiston, but back then, she was not in the condition that guests will find her in now.

“Considering the period in which she was built, there are six very good cabins, all en suite with proper-size berths and headroom,” he says. “You have fireplaces in the main saloon and on the owner’s deck — and the owner’s deck is completely separated. So, if you’re done with your guests, you can have that space upstairs for a while. It’s like a very nice family home on the water.”

Charter clients can experience moments aboard Haida 1929 that other yachts simply cannot offer, he says.

haida 1929 refit

“Yes, you have the cinema, but there’s no flat-screen TVs anywhere,” he says. “You see bookshelves and games. It’s going back to a period when families spent time together.”

Those are the types of moments the owner enjoys and wants to share, making a charter aboard Haida 1929 akin to entering another era.

“We made the flow of the vessel more in keeping with his vision of walking around the decks arm-in-arm with his wife and a glass of champagne,” Lay says, “and come inside and find a roaring fireplace and have a place for smoking a cigar with the boys.”

Classic motor yacht HAIDA 1929 (Ex Dona Amélia), is a very large and unique luxury yacht launched way back in 1929 that measures 71m (233' 3") in length. Her age, size and grandeur produce emotive feelings in those who see her out cruising on the ocean. She was refitted regularly, last refit being in 2020, and offers accommodation for 12 guests in 7 cabins.

NOTABLE FEATURES: ~ Interior by Adam Lay ~ Great variety of tenders and toys ~ Spa centre ~ Hammam ~ Extended top deck ~ Jacuzzi ~ Cinema theatres ~ Fireplaces ~ Formal dining area

Motor yacht HAIDA 1929 is an excellent example of a large classic motor yacht from the golden era of private yachting. Now restored her to her former glory, this classic yacht is a first class luxury gentleman's yacht built in a beautiful bygone age. She is fitted out beautifully with traditional quality furniture and fittings.

With seven cabins, classic superyacht HAIDA 1929 features a unique style, sophistication and grace. Her various saloons, the Library and the beautiful Main Saloon, are complemented by the most attractive Aft Deck with a full alfresco dining table and a superb cushioned 'fan-tail' seating area.

Two KRUPP MAK engines allow this yacht to reach a top speed of 11 knots. She cruises at 10.5 knots and provides great comfort to everyone aboard, as she is equipped with 4-fin zero-speed stabilisers.

Following her extensive refit, the sundeck is now one of HAIDA’s key features. Fully extended, it provides incredible space, luxury and views split over two distinct areas. Set around the magnificent funnel, you will find a pool, two lounge areas and a bar, with plenty of shade available when it is wanted. Two sets of stairs lead you to the lower sun deck level. Overhead awning forward of the deck and dodgers create a more protected and private area, with bespoke lighting providing a refined look in the evening.

The master deck provides absolute privacy for its guest, both inside and out. A spacious master suite comes complete with a shower/hammam and vast wardrobe space. A small hallway leads to the master saloon, which can be roped-off should the charterer wish to keep the area private. The master saloon offers a fireplace, desk and a small bar. From the saloon, you can access the a wonderful private deck with a dining table for four and sun beds. Another set of stairs aft of the deck will take you to the main deck.

Forward of the master deck and separated from the master area, you'll find the bridge and the Captain's cabin. Two tenders are stationed on each side of the external deck. Both are lifted by the goal post type davits with a single lifting point on each tender. Once they are in the water the crew can set up the rowing machine as well as the cross trainer and bike for the charter guests. Toys are kept forward.

A magnificent and very ship-like 12-person dining room lies forward, complete with its own fireplace and gently ascending floor for an extra dash of maritime heritage. The table itself can be reduced to create a more fitting setting for smaller parties. With the pantry and galley positioned behind, it is all perfectly set up for the best service. Further aft you can find the library with a deep sofa, entertainment systems and a separate wine room where a dedicated space is allocated for the charterer 's own wine.

The main saloon lies aft of the library. You'll find a large sofa, another fireplace and a piano. Stairs to the lower deck accommodation and sliding doors to the deck are located off the saloon.

HAIDA 1929 Specifications

Captain Daan de Witt explains why Haida 1929 is ‘the only yacht with a soul’

Gentleman’s journal hopped about the glamorous vintage vessel to find out what makes this yacht a living piece of history.

Words: Jonathan Wells

In association with:

Edmiston

Earlier this year, Gentleman’s Journal spent several heady, heritage-filled days aboard Haida 1929 . A new type of timeless, we found a vessel seemingly plucked from the roaring twenties and dropped into the oceans of today. She may have been built in 1929 — but, after a dutiful and beautiful restoration at the prestigious Pendennis shipyard, she’s both bang up to date and available for charter.

Captain Daan de Witt

During our voyage, we had the pleasure of speaking with Captain Daan de Witt, who let us in on some of the lesser-known facts and secrets that Haida’s been hiding for the best part of a century.

“Haida was launched in 1929,” de Witt tells us in our very own mini documentary above, “for a guy called Max Fleischmann — and he named her for Haida, the Indian tribe in Colombia.”

motor yacht haida

Other facts that surfaced during our tour of the boat were that these are not only some of the few engines still running from the 1920s, but also the same engines used by German U-Boats in the First World War.

“When she’s sailing,” adds the captain, “she’s very different to any modern vessel, as when she’s running the engines, the leave some vibrations on the boat. That’s why people say it’s the only boat with a soul.”

Haida , the name used for several yachts owned by American yeast millionaire, Major Max C. Fleischmann, benefactor of the construction of the Santa Barbara breakwater. The Major owned 22 different yachts during his lifetime, naming most of them Haida after the Haida Indians whose sailing skills he admired.

* Haida (#228794) (1929-current) The largest and most beautiful Haida (#228794) (1929-1999+), was a 218-foot steel-hulled motor yacht from the New York designers, Cox and Stevens, built by Friedrich Krupp in Kiel, Germany:

In 1929, Haida was delivered from Germany to Santa Barbara where she made her homeport for over a decade. In 1940 Fleischmann sold the yacht to the U.S. Navy. She sailed under the name U.S.S. Argus . Argus was decommissioned in 1946 and sold to Egyptian cotton magnate, Maurice Ada, who renamed her Sarina . In 1969, Sarina went into the hands of British Parliament member, Loel Guinness. After a decade she was sold to film producer, Robert Stigwood, in 1979. After only a few years, 1981 Sarina was sold yet again to new a Greek owner, and renamed Rosenkavalier , after the opera by Richard Strauss. In 1999 the yacht was purchased by her current owner and rechristened as Haida G . The ingeniously designed original brass water tight windows have all been refurnished, polished and brought back to perfect condition. Mahogany and white panelling throughout the yacht has been brush painted meticulously to preserve the classic feel and marble mosaics have been used in all guest cabins. In 2009 Haida celebrated her 80th birthday.

* Haida (# ) (1947-current)

In the News~

July 17, 1929 [SBMP]: “The Haida , Major Max Fleischmann’s new yacht, is now en route to Santa Barbara from Kiel, Germany, where it was constructed. The vessel had passed through the Panama Canal and was at Balboa yesterday. As the distance from that point to Santa Barbara is between 2500 and 3000 miles, and the vessel is making 13 knots an hour, it is expected in port in about 10 days. The vessel is about 214 feet over all and carries a crew of about 25 men. Jacob Hansen is the captain.”

June 29, 1931 [SBMP]: “Four persons saved their lives when they jumped off their disabled yacht, Typhoon , as it was pounded to pieces on a reef off Platt’s Harbor, Santa Cruz Island, by a tremendous sea early yesterday morning. Out of gasoline, the jib sail torn to shreds and a 60-pound anchor almost useless against the tremendous swells, the boat was carried more than a mile down the rugged coast. On the boat were Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Learned and J. E. Knowles and Miss Elizabeth Bakewell. They were rescued by members of the crew of Major Max C. Fleischmann’s Haida , after a 12-hour vigil from a cliff-bound stretch of beach. Nothing of the boat was saved.”

In 1940 , this Haida was purchased by the Navy and renamed U.S.S. Argus . She was decommissioned April 15, 1946 and returned to private ownership in Egypt where she was renamed Sarina . Her future included at least nine owners and various global ports in the Mediterranean, Monte Carlo, London, Scandinavia, Japan, Mustique, Singapore and Thailand. In 1978 she was purchased by film producer, Robert Stigwood, and in 1981 she changed hands again and became the Rosenkavalier . In 1988 she was purchased by a Japanese family, and by 1989 she was still operating with her original engines! In 1992 she returned to Greece and then Italy. Rosenkavalier was available for charter in 1999 for $23,000/day. She is described as “the greatest surviving classic motor vessel of the 1920s.”

September 1, 1947 [Life Magazine]: “The newest Fleischmann yacht. Last week Haida , the first big luxury yacht since the war, slipped smoothly out of the Panama Canal toward Santa Barbara on her maiden cruise. There she would pick up her owner, Yeast King Max Fleischmann, and take him fishing in Alaska. Designed by John H. Wells, the Haida had cost a million dollars and was an owner's dream. Everything that money could buy and Fleischmann and his designers could think of had gone into her construction to make her the most completely equipped yacht in the world. Two 1,000-hp diesels pushed her through the warm water. On her bridge radar hummed and loran flickered, while fathometers and radio direction finders constantly checked her automatic steering devices. In her hold she carried 18 tons of gas, oil and water—enough to drive her 6,000 miles without once touching port. Food lockers and freezing units held enough to feed her 10 officers and 7 crewmen for months of cruising. Owner Fleischmann, waiting to set foot on his 22nd yacht, could happily contemplate the fanciest device of all: an exhaust system which would blow the dirty diesel smoke three lengths astern, underwater.”

The classic yacht 'Haida 1929' in Palma

Haida 1929 in Palma, Mallorca

Haida 1929 at Club de Mar in Palma. | Gabriel Alomar

One of the most impressive of vintage yachts, Haida 1929 , is currently moored at the Club de Mar in Palma.

Designed by legendary naval architects Cox and Stevens and built by Krupp Germaniawerft, the yacht was originally delivered to Santa Barbara businessman Max C. Fleischmann in 1929.

The yacht was used by the US Coast Guard during World War II. The name was changed on various occasions, and in 1946, now called Sarina , the yacht was the property of an Egyptian tycoon.

Eventually, the yacht was sold in 2016 to an owner who wished to restore the former splendour and protect the original features. The yacht was renamed Haida 1929 as a homage to her heritage, and Pendennis in Falmouth undertook a complete restoration. Eighteen months of work led to Haida 1929 scooping the World Superyacht Award in 2019.

Seventy-one metres in length, the yacht evokes the atmosphere of a bygone time for up to twelve guests. Low-season charter is priced at 310,000 euros a week .

motor yacht haida

Originally built by Krupp in Germany in 1929 from a Cox & Stevens design, she was launched as Haida. After various colorful owners and known as Sarina, then Rosenkavalier, in 1999, another new owner and yacht lover acquired the vessel. He was well aware of her heritage and condition, since he and the ship had crossed paths numerous times before. It seemed like nothing less than fate. To reconnect the ship with her origins, he re-christened her Haida G.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
