Carl Buchan, a 2021 National Sailing Hall of Fame inductee , won the championship at this year’s International Masters Regatta.

“Our crew all worked together really well. We all did our job and trusted each other. It was good to feel the team coming together. We kept our focus on what we needed to do. The starts were really close and hard fought,” Buchan said.

The regatta, hosted by the San Diego Yacht Club , began Thursday.

“We had a great regatta with plenty of competition out on the water,” said event co-chair J.R. Young.

Rod Davis challenged Buchan, winning race nine by one point, then in race 10 was a foot behind Buchan nearing the finish line. In race 11, Davis and his crew finished third. but it wasn’t enough to beat Buchan on the scoresheet.

Honorable mention goes three past International Masters Regatta champions who each won a race Saturday – 2016 Champion Bill Menninger (race 9 winner), 2019 Champion Andy Roy (race 11 winner), and 2017 Champion Bill Campbell (race 12 winner).

Campbell held the lead in that race, ahead of Davis, from start to finish. Davis, though, bested Campbell’s crew on the scoresheet to earn second place overall in the regatta.

Buchan followed in the footsteps of his father, Bill Buchan, who was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame eight years ago.

Carl Buchan won a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles in the Flying Dutchman Class, while his father won the gold in the same games in the Star fleet.

The younger Buchan’s other titles include the World Singlehanded Youth Championship, Laser U.S. Nationals, North Americans, Flying Dutchman World Championship, America’s Cup (as crew), Tasar World Championship, Star North Americans and Western Hemispheres.

san diego yacht club masters regatta

International regatta will take place at San Diego Yacht Club, Oct. 19-21.

SAN DIEGO — Some of the biggest names in sailing will be in San Diego, late October, as the International Masters Regatta comes to Southern California.

Bill Peterson, Tad Lacey, Don Trask, Jon Andron, Andy Roy and Richard du Moulin are among those participating in this year’s regatta, hosted by San Diego Yacht Club, Oct. 19-21. Roy will be coming to San Diego from Canada.

There will be 12 sailors competing against each other, in all, with teams navigating San Diego Bay aboard J/105s. Bill Campbell (San Diego Yacht Club) defeated Andron (St. Francis Yacht Club) for first place honors last year, followed by Lacey (San Francisco Yacht Club) and Bill Menninger (Newport Harbor Yacht Club) in third and fourth places.

Registration and weigh in for this year’s regatta will begin at 10 a.m. on Oct. 18, followed by a practice race that afternoon on San Diego Bay. San Diego YC will host a “Taste of Point Loma” event for participants at 5 p.m. on Oct. 18.

Racing begins at noon – after breakfast and a competitors meeting – on San Diego Bay, Oct. 19. A dockside social will be held at San Diego YC’s guest dock after racing.

Teams hit the water again on Oct. 20 and 21. An awards ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on Oct. 21, after racing.

The full roster of competitors for this year’s regatta is as follows:

  • Jon Andron, St. Francis Yacht Club
  • Julian Bingham, Mobile Yacht Club
  • Chuck Driscoll, San Diego Yacht Club
  • Richard du Moulin, Larchmant/Storm Trysail Yacht Club
  • Tad Lacey, San Francisco Yacht Club
  • Bill Menninger, Newport Harbor Yacht Club
  • Ted Moore, New York Yacht Club
  • Dave Perry, Pequot Yacht Club

Alan Clark of Richmond Yacht Club won the first International Masters Regatta in 1979. He defended his championship with a repeat win in 1980. Kaneohoe Bay Club Yacht Club’s Cy Gillette won the regatta in 1981, only to see Clark win it again in 1981.

Clark would win his fourth and final International Masters Regatta in 1987; Gillette won it again in 1988.

The regatta was not raced in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

San Diego Yacht Club has won the International Masters Regatta for times since 2012.

Don Trask, a member of St. Francis Yacht Club, originally established the International Masters Regatta in 1975.

The race coordinators are Chair Alli Bell ([email protected]) and San Diego YC Waterfront Director Jeff Johnson ([email protected], 619-758-6310).

Augie Diaz Wins 2022 International Masters Regatta

Casey Allocco

san diego yacht club masters regatta

In October the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) hosted the International Masters Regatta, an international event sailed by invited talented skippers over 60, and five-person crews over 45 in J/105s. This year, 11 teams participated, with eight of them from ICOYC Member Clubs!

Augie Diaz, racing for CRYC/BBYC was named the 2022 International Masters Regatta Champion. It’s only every so often that a regatta stays this unpredictable down to the last leg of the last race, with all four of the top players going into the final race of the day with the chance to come out on top. Diaz, however, was just talented enough to take home the coveted blue blazer. Some say a sprinkle of luck, too, can go a long way.

The final standings had Diaz with 46 points in first, Terry McLaughlin ( Royal Canadian YC) with 50 points in second, and Tad Lacey (San Francisco Yacht Club) with 51 points in third.

“It was all about our team. We had a great team. Mark Reynolds did a great job, Benny Mitchell, Craig Leweck, Chuck Sinks, and Al Pleskus kept us going. It was very exciting, and it was really tough. I feel very fortunate to be able to prevail,” explained Diaz.

“[The secret was] to stay out of my own way,” he joked.

The morning started a little slow. An hour-long postponement due to winds averaging only four knots gave each boat a little more time to recover from the previous night’s “famous” Masters banquet. Once Race Committee felt confident enough in the wind, race nine commenced. Phil Lotz (New York Yacht Club) came to sail with the same momentum as the prior day’s races. Nigel Cochrane ( Royal Vancouver Yacht Club) gave Lotz a run for his money in the first race of the day, ultimately beating him to the finish line. Diaz kept a few boats of distance…perhaps trying to keep everybody on their toes until the last possible race. Good one, Diaz…it worked!

Bill Abbott  (Sarnia YC) came forward in race ten and lead the fleet the entire race. McLaughlin and Lotz trailed closely behind. It was clear McLaughlin came to compete.

The final race of the day is when it really got interesting. Augie Diaz, Alan Field (California YC), Terry McLaughlin, and Tad Lacey all lined up on the start with the chance to win. Spectators and committee boats alike held onto their seats as they calculated potential scores in their heads at each rounding. Lacey was the first to the weather mark. His lead on each leg only increased and he won the final race, earning his first and only bullet of the weekend. Behind him trailed in second place McLaughlin and third place Diaz. It was such a close call! Diaz won the regatta by a mere four points over McLaughlin. In fact, the top four finishers were all within five points on the scoresheet.

Diaz and his team crossed through the finish line as spectators cheered them on. Champagne was popped and the fleet made their way back to SDYC for celebratory cocktails and high-fives from friends.

This is Augie Diaz’s second time as Masters Regatta champion. Diaz is an extremely active member of the sailing community. Just recently, he came in 13th out of 84 at the Star World Championship in Marblehead, MA. Diaz has been named US Sailor of the Year, was inducted in National Sailing Hall of Fame, is a two-time Snipe and four-time Snipe Masters World Champion, and has too many World Championship and National Championship titles to mention. Diaz won the Silver at the Pan-Am Games in Snipes in 1971 and 2022 and won Bronze in 2015. The success in his sailing career has not gone unrecognized and the International Masters Regatta is thrilled to invite skippers of his caliber to sail against the best at SDYC.

Diaz is spending the next couple of weeks taking a short break before the Star season starts back up in Miami in early November.

IMR Chair JR Young wrapped up the weekend by saying, “I couldn’t be happier with the way this year’s Masters Regatta turned out. We had some great competitors who were very excited to be here. And the racing across the field has been very competitive. At last night’s banquet, we saw lots of camaraderie and everyone seemed to have a really good time.”

Young continued, “putting this regatta on takes over 60 volunteers, whether it’s preparing the eleven chartered J/105s, maintaining the boats, moving and manning the changing docks, or managing registration. And of course, our great Race Committee of 18 volunteers these past 3 days. Thanks to each and every one of you for putting another amazing International Masters Regatta weekend on the books.”

After the racing, skippers and their crews were invited to SDYC’s Main Deck for the Awards Ceremony before heading back to their homes around the country.

Long-time SDYC members Jim Pugh and John Reichel not only celebrated the fortieth year of their naval architecture studio here in Point Loma, but did so with purpose by sweeping the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race podium.  Reichel/Pugh Design No. 162 66' Canting Ballast  Alive , owned by Philip Turner and skippered by Duncan Hine, was awarded the coveted Tattersall Cup, as the overall WINNER of the 2023 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race with the best corrected time under IRC—a symbol of supremacy in one of the toughest races in the world. Women’s Racing Brings Strength in Numbers

Women's sailing events and regattas are essential for growing the sport, proving an atmosphere where skill development and opportunity go hand-in-hand.

At a recent coed Grandmasters Team Race Regatta, a teammate told me he didn’t understand why there were women-only sailboat races—as if to say, what’s the point? His comment was a brave one in today’s “woke” world, but it’s something that men and women alike probably think about a lot more than they talk about. Yet it raises a valid conundrum as our predominantly male sport pushes toward wider female inclusion: Why isolate women to their own sideshows when the long-term goal is organic integration across the sport?

As I listened to his comments, many of which I’ve heard before, I thought about the fact that several signature women’s events, like the International Women’s Keelboat Regatta and the Santa Maria Cup, are either dead or not as popular as they once were. And later, as I reflected on our discussion, I took stock of our competitors at the Newport Harbor YC Palmer Trophy. Eight of the 54 sailors—15 percent—were women.

“It’s important to have this dialogue,” says Nicole Breault, the first woman to earn St. Francis YC’s Yachtsman of the Year. Breault is a one-design champion and currently competing in the revived Women’s World Match Racing Tour. “Segregation,” she says, “is part of the process of developing a deeper talent pool among women.”
