Welcome to the Show

It’s almost time: The 2023 Seattle Boat Show comes into port next month. The beloved Northwest event will fill almost every corner of Lumen Field Events Center and Bell Harbor Marina, and feature over 800 of the latest and greatest model vessels, almost 300 exhibitors, and 110 hours of informational seminars covering almost every aspect of the maritime pastime. A longtime hallmark of the show, these sessions have always been a popular draw amongst boaters looking to boost their knowledge—and this year, the offerings have been bulked up with a wide array of fresh seminar topics. (In fact, thanks to effort by the team at the Northwest Marine Trade Association, 25% of this year’s seminars are brand spankin’ new.) Here, dozen of the experts preparing for the show give NWY readers an exclusive sneak peek at their seminars, which focus on forward-reaching fields such as marine communications, electrical refits, hybrid propulsion systems, safety innovations, and more. Prep your calendars, then sit back and enjoy the show.

GOING HYBRID

ALEX WILKEN Electric & Hybrid Propulsion Systems: Range, Efficiency, and Peace Of Mind February 4 @ 3 p.m.

[In a Nutshell] “Seattle Boat Works has been doing custom conversions from diesel to electric propulsion for over a decade,” states Wilken. “I will share my experience with boaters by going over the concepts of electric versus combustion systems, benefits of electric propulsion, types of and improvements in battery chemistry technology, and understanding hybrid systems.” [Expert Resume] “The seminar is based on real world installation examples I have done over the past 10 years as part of my business (Seattle Boat Works) that have given me an in-depth understanding of electric motors. I’m also a certified marine mechanic, accredited installer for several electric propulsion brands, USCG Captain, and a full-time, live-aboard boater myself. My own boat has been my home for 36 years!” [Why Now] “Boaters are often unaware that marine electric motors have been around for decades, from the state ferries to US Navy submarines. We often have to tell our customers we’re not inventing electric motors from scratch, just helping them put together a system from tried and true manufacturers that works for their boat and needs. The new thing is that the demand for electric and hybrid systems has gone through the roof, and LiPO4 batteries, which are safe for marine use and have become much cheaper, hold so much more power in a much smaller space. Overall this means there are more and more options for a range of boat sizes, and investing in an electric system doesn’t just have to be for the commercial boaters. Most boaters think electric propulsion is about saving the planet or a green option. While it can be, the real secret is that the benefits are in the improved experience and expense. Maintenance, clean-up, and noise reduction can be the most difficult parts of a boater’s experience, and electric or hybrid systems can solve so many of those problems.”

SAFETY FIRST

MARGARET POMMERT 20 Favorite Boating Innovations February 8 @ 1 p.m. [In a Nutshell] “Boating is a relatively safe sport, and most hazards can be controlled with proper equipment and training,” Pommert asserts. “I will discuss innovations in a variety of areas, including rescuing crew overboard, navigation, first aid afloat, fire safety, weather awareness, and emergency communications. The focus is not bleeding edge technology, but innovative tools proven effective by Pacific Northwest boaters.” [Expert Resume] Pommert has been a longtime safety advocate in the region.“I chair the US Sailing Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal Award Committee, a national award which recognizes a significant accomplishment in seamanship that has saved a life, and collects case studies in rescues for analysis by the US Sailing Safety-at-Sea Committee. As VP for Safety at Sea for The Sailing Foundation, I organize our annual hands-on Safety at Sea training in which lessons learned from recent incidents are shared. I’m an appointed member of the Washington State Boating Program Advisory Council, providing recommendations on ways to enhance boating safety across Washington. I’m also a very active instructor for several of the larger Pacific Northwest sailing and power-boating schools.” [Why Now] “With inflation, many of us are looking for ways to safely enjoy boating on a budget. Several of these innovations help do just that,” she says in conclusion. “And some of my favorites are even free!”

WIRED FOR SUCCESS

NANCY ERLEY & JO ABELI Considerations for a State of the Art Electrical Refit of Your Boat February 4 @ 6 p.m.

[In a Nutshell] Nancy Erley, an ocean sailor, and Jo Abeli, a marine electrician, will tackle the planning process and new technology available for upgrading your boat’s electrical system.  Collaborating on the electrical modernization of Erley’s 1982 Orca 38 Tethys, they share the choices they made and why. States Erley: “You will see how to weigh the many considerations to achieve a balanced and elegant refit of your boat. Bring questions!” [ Expert Resume] “As a boat owner for 47 years, I’ve [Erley] fixed numerous electrical problems during two circumnavigations. Now it’s time to modernize my boat’s electrical systems and I’m so pleased to work with Jo Abeli, an ABYC certified marine electrician, and just the right person to bring Tethys into the modern age. Jo has worked on projects ranging from full repowers of live-aboard yachts, to bonding systems on wooden fishing vessels, to programming app-integrated vessel monitoring and switching.” [Why Now] “The innovations in marine electrical systems, batteries, and solar panels have moved at a quick pace—faster than most boat owner’s projects. This new generation of marine electricians have been trained on the latest systems and technologies, whether it’s lithium battery technology, Bluetooth enabled sensors, or solar panel options. The components we will be installing as part of Tethys ’ upgrades have been around for several years, and many boat owners will be familiar with them or at least heard of them. What some vessel owners may not know is just how accessible and user friendly a lot of the technology has become, and how many options are out there. For example, improvements in monitoring of electrical systems via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth can provide a record of history and trends over time. This can be useful for boat owners to improve safety on board and maintain the parts they invested in, and they can be powerful troubleshooting tools for technicians.”

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

RICHARD ANDERSON How to Work Re’BOAT’ly’: Advanced Internet for Entrepreneurs, Remote Workers & Digital Nomads February 3 @ 6 p.m. + Internet Everywhere: Satellite Internet in the Pacific Northwest and Beyond February 9 @ 4 p.m. + Everything You Need to Know about Starlink for Boats February 11 @ 1 p.m.

[In a Nutshell] In the first of three seminars that Anderson offers over the course of the week, he offers his best tips for sailors seeking to work ‘reboatly’: “This particular seminar is for business owners, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and digital nomads who need the internet for their income. We will discuss how to combine Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite technologies into a single reliable internet connection for phone calls, video conferencing, web browsing, and other business needs. Their clients will never know they are on a boat!”             Mid-week, he tackles the more specific aspects of satellite connections available to boaters while cruising the Pacific Northwest waters: “This high level seminar covers the satellite options available today and in the future, including Starlink, as well as how the region, geography, and vessel itself affect the performance of each option,” he says. “We will place special emphasis on the latest options for the U.S. West Coast, the Inside Passage, Southeast Alaska, and Mexico, as well as global options for the intrepid explorers in our midst.”             And finally, Anderson tackles arguably the industry’s buzziest new tech for his last seminar: “It covers everything you ever wanted to know about Starlink and its use on boats—how it works, where it works, what is costs, differences between plans and hardware models, how to power it, how to mount it, limitations, risks, and how to enhance the reliability of the service with additional hardware. All of my clients are asking about it, wanting to know if they should get it, which version to get, how it works, and what else they need. It’s a very hot topic!” [Expert Resume] “I have 20 years of corporate IT and IT sales experience, including satellite networking, prior to quitting my old job and going cruising on a sailboat with my family. We actually ran three businesses remotely from the boat using a variety of Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite technologies.” [ Why Now] “Since Covid started so many people have chosen to change their lives, get out of traditional office work or jobs, and travel or live aboard boats (as well as RVs, and et cetera).  But these same boaters need some of the traditional things we take for granted at home like reliable internet. Many new boaters are also not retired and still need to work to support their families and their new lifestyle. It’s possible to create a reliable office-like connection to conduct business from practically anywhere and continue to generate income even when you aren’t in your office.”

OFFSHORE OUTFITTERS

JOHN NEAL Beyond YouTube: Lessons Learned from 400,00000 Miles February 4 @ 2 p.m. [ In a Nutshell] John Neal sailed from Seattle on a Vega 27 in 1974 and has never looked back. “If you’ve gotten the adventure bug from watching YouTube sailing channels, this seminar shows you how to get from dreaming to experiencing your own blue water sailing adventure,” he says. “Here, learn how to find, purchase, and outfit a boat, how to qualify for insurance and how to sail it safely anywhere in the world.” [ Expert Resume] “I’ve sailed the equivalent of 16 times around the world and helped more than 11,000 people achieve their own dreams of worldwide sailing adventures.” [ Why Now] “This seminar is cutting edge because since Covid there are thousands of people dying to get on their own boats and sail off into the sunset. I cover all of the latest developments in gear and electrical systems. Plus, a detailed two-page checklist is included, and a 270-page textbook is available.”

CRUISE CONTROL

SARAH & WILL CURRY Bluewater Cruising Now Panel: Trends, Revolutionary Gear, and Timeless Tips February 4 @ 11 a.m. + South to Mexico & West to Australia February 5 @ 1 p.m. + Self Steering Windvanes: Your Best Crew Member February 4 @ 1 p.m.

[In a Nutshell] The Currys will help lead a Saturday panel that features experienced cruisers, including John Neal: “We love to talk about the incredible world of cruising: what’s better than traveling the ocean with your home? We chat about boat and passage planning, sailing trends, offshore gear, and timeless tips for life at sea. The passage down the Washington/Oregon coast can be a first and intimidating one for many. We share options for safe passages south to Mexico, and inspiration for making the decision to go… and go further.”  [Expert Resume] “We hatched a plan to sail to the South Pacific on our very first date. During our years of planning and saving, I [Sarah Curry] listened to every cruising seminar at the Seattle Boat Show… multiple years in a row!  Since setting off from the Pacific Northwest in 2013 we’ve owned three sailboats, had countless experiences, and made a mistake or ten. Our current adventure (with our growing crew, 3½ -year-old twin boys) has us starting a little further east: a catamaran in Greece.”  [Why Now] “The year 2023 is being defined by the obtainability of cruising as a lifestyle. You don’t have to have the perfect boat. You don’t have to leave a career at home; perhaps you work remotely (Starlink is the biggest technical innovation in years). The trend that has been flourishing is an attitude thing—young cruisers (and the young at heart) are inspired to see the world and are taking the ocean by storm. It’s a beautiful and exciting way to live and there’s a huge community of like-minded sailors waiting to welcome you. Our seminars are not all fluffy.  We understand the seriousness of sailing offshore, and present about self-steering systems and emergency steering too.”

MORE ON THE DOCKET

RICHARD RODRIGUEZ Pros & Cons of Boating Apps: Using Tablets & Smartphones Underway February 5 @ 12 p.m. Says Rodriguez: “In 20 years of professional time spent on waters from Mexico to Alaska, I have gone from charting on paper to electronics, as nowadays you will get more relevant information from your portable device. Though old rituals are hard to move away from, this one is pertinent as NOAA no longer supports paper charts and by 2024 will eliminate the Raster database entirely.” MIKE BEEMER All You Need To Know About Drop-In Lithium Batteries February 9 @ 2 p.m. “Lithium batteries are the latest buzz word and for good reason, the benefits are great and they are quickly becoming mainstream onboard cruising vessels. However, there are a lot of options and considerations when switching to lithium.”       DOUG LOMBARD Green Technology is a Game Changer: Sailing Offshore & the Coho Ho Ho February 8 @ 5 p.m. With an assist from daughter Devon, Lombard recounts sailing a Hans Christian Christina 43 for 21 days from Honolulu to Seattle with help from solar panels, lithium ion batteries, water maker, Windvane steering, weather routing, and satellite communication. TREVOR MACLACHLAN Running Your Boat With Confidence: Relax And Have Fun! February 11 @ 3 p.m. Drawing on a long career in the industry, MacLachlan’s chat will empower beginning boaters:“People usually buy a boat to relax and have fun. Yet it’s human nature to feel anxiety creep in when faced with uncertainty. We’ll discuss ways to help filter out all the clutter and break down into easy steps what boaters really need to know to become empowered to safely operate their new boat!” WINDY HINMAN THE MAKING OF A SAILOR February 6 @ 3 & 4 p.m. Geared toward women who might be new to sailing, Hinman will lead a panel of women sailors with various levels of experience revealing how they evolved into the confident sailors they’ve become. “We’ll share our experiences, what helped, and what didn’t in our learning process, and allow some time for Q & A.”

Seattle Boat Show cruises into town, plus other fun things to do around Seattle this week

What’s happening feb. 4-10.

Come one, come all, to one of the Puget Sound’s biggest boat shows! The Seattle Boat Show is sailing into town Feb. 4 for its 75th anniversary.

The show began modestly in 1947 with only 13 marine dealers and 100 exhibitors on the shores of Lake Union. Today, it has grown into one of the largest boat shows in the country. The show, which will be held in person at Lumen Field Event Center and, for the first time, at Bell Harbor Marina, will feature 255 exhibitors with more than 800 new and brokerage boats through Feb. 12. It will also feature a collection of historical photos commemorating the 75th anniversary, plus seminars, special events and more.

George Harris, president and CEO of the Northwest Marine Trade Association, the Seattle Boat Show’s owners and producers, describes the event as a family reunion, especially after the 2021 show was held virtually due to the pandemic.

“There have been generations of boating families coming to the Seattle Boat Show. … It’s really fun to hear their boating stories like, ‘I first came to the boat show with my grandfather in the ’50s,’ or, ‘My dad proposed to my mom at the boat show in 1983,’ ” Harris said, adding that gathering in person once again is also an opportunity for business owners and exhibitors to reconnect with their customers.

With 72 hourlong seminars throughout the event, the Seattle Boat Show prides itself on the educational opportunities available to participants that are not often offered at other boat shows, Harris said. Seminar classes include topics like cruising in Mexico, anchoring basics, San Juan Island shrimping and more taught by “rock stars in the boating industry.”

In addition to the seminar classes, the show also offers a deeper learning experience through “Boat Show University” webinars, “an in-depth, long-form seminar on selected topics,” as Harris explains it.

New this year: All seminar classes will be recorded and uploaded online for those who cannot attend the show, and the videos will be available for three months after the show. Boat Show University webinars are also available live during the show in addition to the on-demand recordings.

“There’s also an element of fun at the Seattle Boat Show. The Seattle Boat Show doesn’t take itself too seriously,” Harris said. “We have a history of always having something fun at the show, whether it’s the world’s largest sandcastle or the largest boat made out of Legos or something like that, so this year we’re bringing in a mini golf course.”

The inaugural Seattle Boat Show U.S.S. Open, a nine-hole putt-putt course, serves as an entertaining way for visitors to navigate the show and win raffle prizes. Visitors can also head into the Boaters Lounge to participate in the Long Putt Challenge on Feb. 4 and 11 to win gift certificates.

This year, the Seattle Boat Show will also host a selection of themed days. Women’s Day is Feb. 7, and women can attend the show for free and enjoy a slate of seminars designed specifically for women by women boaters. Although dogs are welcome every day of the show at Bell Harbor Marina, on Feb. 10 visitors are encouraged to bring their furry friends indoors at Lumen Field Event Center. Owners can create custom engraved dog tags and enjoy a photo booth to enter the cover dog contest (the winning dog will be featured on the cover of a springtime issue of the 48° North sailing magazine ). For those who arrive after 5 p.m., enjoy Yappy Hour and take home a doggy life vest courtesy of Connelly Watersports.

The Seattle Boat Show runs Feb. 4-12 at Lumen Field Event Center (800 Occidental Ave. S., Seattle) and Bell Harbor Marina (2203 Alaskan Way, Seattle). A free shuttle runs continuously between both locations. The show is following Lumen Field’s health requirements at both show locations: full proof of vaccine for those over the age of 12 or negative coronavirus test within 72 hours; masks are required.

Tickets are $18 for adults (ages 17 and under are free). The seminar package (which includes nine days admission to the show, three-month access to the online seminar library and more) is $99. Find more information at: seattleboatshow.com

Seattle Boat Rentals starting at $54/hr— Browse boats!

Tickets, passes, parking

Standard tickets are $20 per day but there are lots of ways to save big. A 9-day pass is just $40, and there’s a 2-for-1 deal on Tuesday, Feb 7. Monday, Feb 6, is free for women with an advance (no charge) ticket booked online. Best of all, anyone 17 and under are free throughout the entire nine days.

Pro Tip: Thursday, February 9, is Dogs on Deck day when you and your leashed trusty stead can stroll the show, meet dog trainers, and have a custom dog tag made. On Wednesday, February 8, water rescue dogs from the American Academy of Canine Water Rescue will do an exciting on-water demo.

Finding parking shouldn’t be hard (if you plan ahead). There are three areas to park:

  • Lumen Field
  • Mariners Garage at T-Mobile Park
  • The Bell Street Pier Garage

Parking starts as low as $5 per day. There are also two free shuttles (look for the white tents and signage) and a free water shuttle. You can also check out King County Metro, Sound Transit, and Amtrak.

Inside the venue(s)

You’ll have to divide your time between two venues – inside displays (including boats) at the Lumen Field Event Center and outside booths with boats afloat at Bell Harbor Marina at the Port of Seattle. Whether you’re shopping for an inflatable tender, a center console fishing boat, a distance cruiser, or any kind of boating equipment, this is the must-visit event in the region.

Boats & gear at Seattle Boat Show 2023

seattle boat show 2023

The northwestern corner of the country is known for their aluminum fishing boats and you won’t find a larger selection of these tough craft anywhere else. But that’s just one class of boat available. There will be dayboats from Bayliner, Boston Whaler, and Cobalt along with pontoon boats from Barletta, Bennington and Bentley. Cruisers will love all the Cutwater models and sailors can check out the latest from Jeanneau Yachts.

Come for boat insurance from BoatUS or electronics from Garmin, Simrad and ICOM. Already have a boat? Don’t forget to checkout dockage availability at one of the numerous marinas that will be represented. You’ll find everything from lures to big boat gear like FLIR cameras and Intellian antennas. Well over 300 exhibitors will be on hand to show off their wares so be prepared to attend on multiple days to take it all in.

Boat Ed at Seattle Boat Show 2023

seattle boat show 2023 2

Newbie boaters as well as old salts will have lots of opportunities to train and learn from marine experts thanks to the show’s packed boating and fishing seminar schedule. This year, the Boat Show University Program will offer classes both online and in person.

You can sharpen your electronic navigation skills, learn how to catch halibut and lingcod, or get the scoop on better anchoring and docking skills. Learn to provision or hear about the latest in electric propulsion.

You may even meet legends like Nigel Calder (who’s doing marine diesel and electrical systems classes), refresh your rules of the road knowledge, or dial in weather forecasting and routing. There’s really no end to what is covered from salmon angling to crabbing, and from cruising in Mexico to learning about Starlink communications equipment.

Pricing for seminars varies and includes everything from $99 packages to exclusive offers that include nine days of boat show admission plus a Waggoner Cruising Guide. Check out the schedule and register early.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

Related stories

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse live updates: Ship hits major Baltimore bridge with construction crew on it

What we know.

  • A major bridge in Baltimore partially collapsed overnight after it was hit by a cargo ship, authorities said. A representative from Brawner Builders Inc. told NBC News that the company had a construction crew on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed. Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the crew was fixing potholes.
  • A search was underway this morning for at least six people who were feared to have been sent plunging into the river, the city's fire chief said, while two people were rescued. Sonar was used to detect vehicles submerged in the water, he added. Authorities believe the eight people were all part of the construction crew.
  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River, was hit by the 948-foot Dali container ship, the U.S. Coast Guard told NBC News.
  • Between the mayday call and the collapse of the Key Bridge, officials were able to stop the flow of traffic from continuing onto the collapsed bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said, adding that the call "saved lives."
  • Dramatic video shows the moment the bridge appears to snap and then tumble into the river after the vessel collides with one of its supporting structures.

Some missing workers recently welcomed babies, colleague says

Some of the construction workers who are now unaccounted for after the bridge collapse recently had babies, one of their colleagues said.

About three or four of the Brawner Builders crew members had welcomed babies within the last year, according to Earl Schneider, a structural foreman with the company.

“I know everybody on that crew personally. They’re all great people,” he said. “It’s tough. It’s been a rough morning."

Schneider, 33, said he last worked on the bridge about two weeks ago. He woke up around 2 a.m. to frantic phone calls from a friend who works at a hospital, who thought Schneider might have been on the bridge early this morning.

Schneider said he then called the crew members he knew were on the bridge, but all the calls went to voicemail.

“It’s tragic in a sense of like, it’s a blessing I wasn’t on there, but it comes at the cost of somebody else,” he said. “Folks had their lives changed in a blink of an eye. You don’t know how much time you’ve got.”

Teen describes being awakened by Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore resident Kayleigh Gray, 14, was startled awake early today when she heard “a real loud boom” and her bed started shaking as a cargo ship slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“Since I was asleep, my grandmother woke me up and said, ‘The bridge is gone.’ I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ She said, ‘The ship hit it.’ I said, ‘There’s no way. You’re’ lying,” Gray told NBC News correspondent George Solis. Her grandmother then showed her video footage of the devastating crash.

She said she and her family go over that bridge every day. Her first thoughts went to the people impacted.

“I was worried about the families to be honest ... I called friends. We called friends and family seeing who was on the bridge. Because my grandfather, he’s supposed to go over that bridge every day. He’s a truck driver. He was supposed to be on that bridge today around 7:30 a.m.,” Gray said.

She said the bridge means "a lot" to people who grew up in the area and hopes that it'll be rebuilt.

Worker recently moved off bridge repair is in 'shock'

A construction worker who was recently moved off a project to repair the bridge is in “shock” as he waits for news on at least six of his colleagues who are now missing.

James Krutzfeldt, 34, a foreman for Brawner Builders, told NBC News he was working on the bridge about two weeks ago. One of his colleagues who was unaccounted for this morning is another foreman whom Krutzfeldt considers his mentor and “work dad.”

“We’re all just waiting for a phone call,” he said. “It’s all up in the air. We’re waiting on our boss and owner to break it down to everybody.”

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, Krutzfeldt said.

That repair project has been going on for about four years, he said. “We all bounce around,” he said. “It’s sad. I haven’t really realized it yet. I’m still kind of in shock.”

BALTIMORE — A resident of suburban Baltimore who can see the Francis Scott Key Bridge from his backyard said he woke up in the middle of the night to his home shaking.

"I could have never, never imagined that it was the Key Bridge that had just collapsed," Georgio Comninos said. "I thought it was perhaps like a really low flying, maybe a military jet, perhaps a small earthquake however unlikely that is in Baltimore."

He questioned why the bridge collapsed so quickly after its collision with the cargo ship.

"I mean, was this thing held up with toothpicks?" Comninos asked. "What’s the deal?

Size of ship negated any measures meant to deflect ships, Johns Hopkins professor says

seattle yacht show

Jason Abbruzzese

The ship that hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge was big enough that any safety measures meant to try to limit the impact of a collision would have been rendered ineffective, according to Benjamin Schafer, a professor of civil and systems engineering at the nearby Johns Hopkins University.

He stressed that any failure in this situation is centered on the broader issue of maritime safety and infrastructure development.

He said that container ships like the Dali are “a different animal” when it comes to dealing with safety and collisions. "I’m afraid that this is not something that any bridge would be designed to withstand," he said. "We need to make sure this collision does not happen."

"Where’s lessons to be learned here about about how we manage our infrastructure that we need to learn quickly," he added.

"It's going to be a build that's going to require every facet and every aspect of our society. It is something that I can tell you we are going to get this done," he said, adding that he can't comment on the time and money it would take as the focus for now remains on saving lives.

Baltimore county executive addresses collapse

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski called the collapse "devastating" and said his "first and most important priority" is to search for and rescue survivors.

"In the days and weeks ahead there will be many questions about the impact of this incident on our families, regional traffic and commerce," he said in a statement released on X. "We will work closely with state and federal partners to make sure we are doing all we can to support everyone impacted."

"In the face of danger, we hold out. In the face of heartbreak, we come together, and we come back stronger," Moore wrote on X. "That is what we’ve always done. That’s what we will continue to do."

The governor — who was elected in 2022 — also commended first responders and commended what he described as quick coordination among local, state and federal government agencies.

"Our administration is working closely with leaders at all levels of government and society to respond to this crisis," Moore wrote. "Not just by addressing the immediate aftermath, but also by building a state that is more resilient and more safe."

Vehicles were stopped from getting onto the bridge after collapse, saving lives, Maryland governor says

Between the mayday call and the collapse of the Key Bridge, officials were able to stop the flow of traffic from continuing onto the collapsed bridge, Moore told reporters this morning.

He warned that the investigation is still ongoing and they don't have full details, but that the response may have prevented more casualties. Six people were unaccounted for and two had been rescued, according to authorities.

"Many of the vehicles were stopped before they got onto the bridge, which saved lives," Moore said.

At 1:28 a.m., the ship can be seen making impact with the bridge, followed by the span's complete collapse.

Pride and emotion as Baltimore resident says goodbye to beloved bridge

seattle yacht show

To the people of Maryland, this was more than just a bridge — it was a symbol of local pride.

"I was always proud because of being from Baltimore, that was one of the proud things that we built that, you know, and it [was] still standing," Chantel Debord, who lives in Baltimore, said in an interview with NBC News.

"And just being able to say that our port is one of the reasons why the East Coast over here gets a lot of their product," she added.

Debord predicted that taxes could rise, plus the region could see a big hit to its fishing industry, as well as longer commutes.

Her reaction was infused with a profound sense of loss. "It’s sad to see that it’s gone. A lot of hard work in there. A lot of Baltimore people have built it, and people from Maryland, and it’s completely gone," she said.

"People lost their lives and now people are gonna lose their livelihoods."

Debord asked her daughter to take pictures as the pair drove over the bridge two weeks ago, not knowing it would be their last time.

'It's just not there': Shocked local responds to collapse of famous bridge

DUNDALK — Local residents have spoken of the shock of seeing such a famous landmark, a mainstay in the area for generations, suddenly vanish from view.

William Reynolds, from Dundalk, Maryland, a town immediately north of the bridge, described hearing a sound "like a tractor trailer hitting the wall" this morning and came to see it for himself at 5:30 a.m. He lives a 2-minute walk away, off the first exit after the bridge.

"It’s literally at the end of the street, you see it coming home every day, pouring into your neighborhood, and now it’s just not there," he told NBC News.

"My parents are on the other side of that bridge, you know, everybody that you know comes back and forth over that bridge even late at night or early in the morning," he said.

After the immediate shock, Reynolds' thoughts soon turned to increased driving times of 45 minutes or more that drivers will face going through the congested city or using the busy I-95 to complete what until early this morning was a simple journey.

"It’s just not there — like the video is real, like, it’s not there," he said.

Reconstruction 'could cost 10 times more' than the $60 million build price, leading British engineer says

Henry Austin

Reconstruction of the Key Bridge could cost over 10 times more than the $60 million it cost to construct it in 1977, a leading British engineer told NBC News today.

David MacKenzie, senior director of COWI, a British engineering and architecture consultancy firm, said the bridge could be reconstructed in two years “if people get their skates on.”

“It has to be built quickly because of the pressure on commuter traffic, so procurement will have to be shortcut, so it will be a very expensive rebuild,” added MacKenzie, a long span bridge engineer.

He said that “there was nothing unusual about the bridge,” before it collapsed and there “was some ship impact protection in the form of big concrete obstacles. But the ship which crashed into the bridge has “somehow got past those,” he said.

Container ships when the bridge was built in 1977 “were a lot smaller than they are now,” he said, adding that a risk assessment should have picked up on the dangers posed by modern vessels.

People would expect the new bridge “to be more robust,” he added.

It would likely take a matter of weeks to clean up the debris, he said, adding that the larger pieces would probably be blown up into smaller pieces and then collected by a crane ship.

Ship's managing company says all 22 crew members accounted for

The managing company of the ship that collided with the Key Bridge this morning said that all 22 crew members on board, including two pilots, have been accounted for and there were no reports of any injuries.

In a statement to NBC News, Synergy Marine Group said the owners and managers of the Dali container ship, which was bound for Sri Lanka, were fully cooperating with federal and state government agencies.

The company added that the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined.

At the same news conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called the incident "an unthinkable tragedy."

White House is monitoring bridge collapse

The White House is monitoring the bridge collapse and is in touch with the Maryland governor and the Baltimore mayor to offer federal assistance, a White House official told NBC News.

The official also said there does not appear to be any evidence that the collapse is the result of "nefarious intent."

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who remain missing as a result of this horrific incident," the official said.

Sonar detects vehicles submerged in the water after bridge collapse, fire chief says

Sonar has been used to detect the presence of vehicles submerged in the water after the bridge collapse this morning, but emergency crews don’t have a count of exactly how many yet, Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace said in his briefing with reporters.

He said there were likely multiple people on the bridge at the time of the collapse, and as a result, likely multiple people in the water.

Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace

Crews are still very much in an active search and rescue stage, Wallace added, and will continue to be for some time, searching both above and below water, as well as on the deck of the ship that hit the bridge.

The crews are using different types of sonar capabilities, underwater drones and infrared technology, he said.

Search underway for at least 7 people after bridge collapse, fire chief says

Rescue teams are looking for at least seven people after the Key Bridge collapse, Baltimore City Fire Department Chief James Wallace has said in a briefing with reporters.
