  • 17 century sailing was the first recorded events for sail racing and leisure activities
  • America’s Cup and other olympic sport racing events were a big part of sailing history
  • Advances in technology such as GPS and foiling were huge steps in world sailing
  • Sports sailing rules helped defined race events so that anyone with a boat can compete
  • Each decade of sailing offers new insights to technology and increase popularity in races

‍ Sailing as a sport is a popular pastime in many locations across the world. But what is the history and how has it evolved?

Sailing, with its ancient roots in Rome, Greece, and Asia, evolved into recreational sailing races in the 17th century in Holland. This development was linked to the return of Charles II to England after exile, which led to celebratory events and the birth of sailing races as a leisure activity.

Based on my analysis, sail races could have transpired as early as the invention of the boat. But, it was not until the 17th century and beyond that sailboat racing was a common leisure activity.

Table of contents

‍ history of sailing as a sport.

Sailing was once reserved for the wealthy and is now a sport accessible to everyone. It offers a unique blend of tranquility and freedom on the water that is hard to find anywhere else.

While some see it as a recreational activity many others view it as a competitive sport and even eye the Olympics with various events such as fleet racing, match racing, and even team racing. This evolution has made sailing one of the world's most popular sports today.

Sailing that we refer to today was originally used for transportation of goods and defending against enemy territories. This was common around the 1400’s and some sail races were likely conducted as a natural form of leisure to decide who was the fastest.

17th Century Sailing

Sailing has a long history that started as a means of transportation and fishing. It eventually became a popular recreational activity. The sport of sailing emerged in the early 17th century in the Netherlands and yacht clubs began forming through social gatherings.

The world's first yacht club was established in 1720 in Cork, Ireland, after King Charles II received a yacht as a gift from the Dutch. In 1844 the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was founded in the United States and marked a significant milestone in American sport sailing.

Sailing races were still commonly used for those that were wealthy. But many boat builders over the years found access to cheaper materials and were able to make affordable boats for everyone.

Olympic Sport Racing

There are important sports sailing times throughout history that showcase the world of sailing. Many people that are involved claim it is the best sport in the world and unlike gym sports or other contact sports.

Other sports do not compare fully but the team sport aspect does in many ways. One design racing is also a unique aspect that was later initiated for races to keep them fair so no person has an advantage over another.

America’s Oldest Race

The America's Cup is a renowned and prestigious global sailing competition. It originated when the NYYC sent the schooner America to England to challenge British sailors around the Isle of Wight and won the inaugural trophy. This is a lot more popular than playing chess as this race showcased skill and class among the two teams.

This competition was later deemed as the America's Cup and is the oldest sailboat racing event in the world. The United States dominated it for 132 years until Australia's victory in 1983. Over the years the competition has witnessed significant changes especially in the types of sailboats utilized and more factors were introduced to the sailing realm.

Sailing in the Olympics

Sailing was first recognized as an official sport in 1896 when it was included in the Olympics Games in Athens. But due to the beautiful and wild environment that surrounds sailing bad weather prevented any sailing events from happening so it made its Olympics debut in 1900 in Paris.

Initially boats were categorized by weight classes. In the early Olympic Games women were allowed to compete alongside men in the same teams. However, this changed 88 years later at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 when different one design classes, sailing competitions, and racing rules went into effect.

Advancement in Sailing Technology

The evolution of sailboats has shifted from weight-based categorization and mixed-gender teams to a more technologically advanced and competitive sport. Sailors compete on two teams or more based on the boat types and race type they are engaging in.

Yacht design and technology improvements have resulted in faster and lighter sailboats that demand higher technical skills from sailors. Sails were considered the first major technological boost but there are plenty of technological advances that have been implemented over time.

Foiling is a revolutionary but also a recent development that enables boats to fly above the water. This idea was sparked around 1906, but was not popular until the 1970’s and even used in the olympics in 2021. Moreover the use of technological gadgets like routing and GPS has replaced reliance on traditional tools and raw physical strength among modern sport sailors.

Sport Sailing Rules

Many rules and classes were added to sailboat races over the years to help group various boats and people together to make it more fair. A sailing race today will have many characteristics that set it apart from another race, so check your local yacht club for more details if you are interested.

Sailing Fleet Racing

Fleet racing is a type of sport sailing race involving multiple sailboats, typically ranging from a few boats to potentially a hundred. It gained popularity in 1933, involving teams from Canada, the US, and the UK.

Each participating team must complete at least three races on a predetermined course, and the team with the lowest score wins the race. This is very common for typical races at regattas or other boating clubs.

Sailing Match Racing

Match races are a competitive sailing format where two teams compete against each other, which is similar to America's Cup. The objective is to reach the finish line ahead of the opponent and emphasize top speed and tactics to get ahead.

The first instance of match racing in one-design boats (two identical boats) occurred in 1937 during the Bermuda Gold Cup. This was won by Briggs Cunningham (USA), who later won the first America's Cup held in 12-meter boats.

Sailing Team Racing

Team racing is a competitive sailing event where two teams each use three boats and compete against each other. It originated in a British-American showdown in 1921 and is commonly used in the Olympics.

The purpose of the other boats within the teams is that the final score of a team is determined by the performance of all their boats collectively. The winning team typically scores 10 or fewer points. To achieve this, teams employ various tactics to support their teammates and enhance their chances of victory.

Sailing Offshore to Race

Offshore racing is a long-distance sailing race covering over hundreds of miles, typically from one starting location to the ending location. Sailors will use sailboats that are capable of handling those conditions.

It has a history dating back to the 1900s but became more popular with advancements in boat technology. It is one of various forms of sport sailing competitions still in use today.

World Sailing Organization

The World Sailing Organization was founded in 1907 and has governed the way sports sailing has shifted for boats competing over the years. Sailing competitively continues to grow as new technology becomes available. Each year that passes is another year for review for the WSO to see how they can make it better than the previous year.

Oceanic racing would not be complete with the WSO , as they help craft it into the best sport in the world. Sailing looks completely different now than it did 100 years ago and it continues to evolve. Each decade that passes is a new step in the right direction for evolving sailing trends and a lifelong learning process.

The Next 100 Years of Racing

Sailing is a globally popular sport that offers a unique connection with nature and a sense of adventure. It combines plenty of elements that sailors crave such as physical and mental skills. It also demands proper fitness, being quick and agile, knowledge of sailing tactics, and technical competence of GPS or other tech, especially during long and challenging races.

The physical demands vary based on boat size, how many people are on board, and various weather conditions. This requires tailored training and good nutrition for sailors to stay physically and mentally sharp. Sailing has evolved into a challenging and popular sport that many enthusiasts consider a way of life.

As technology and information continues to evolve, so will the races and events that are going to take place. The natural world of sailing still has the same elements that many have gravitated to over the years.

When did Sailing become a Sport?

When did Sailing become a Sport? | Life of Sailing

Even though sailing as a means of transportation has been around for thousands of years, long before recorded history, sports sailing began in the 17th century in Holland.

Sailing is, without a doubt, a perfect way of experiencing tranquility and freedom on the water. While millions of people around the world participate in sailing, did you know that sailing was once an activity limited to the wealthy class? Today, sailing is no longer just an activity for the rich and famous. Instead, it has become a sport for everyone. For some, sailing is simply a recreation; a great way to enjoy and steer the massive and beautiful sailboats. But to others, it's a sport and a perfect opportunity to probably participate in the next Olympics. Whatever the reason, it's important to look back at sailing as a sport and how it has evolved to become one of the most popular sports in the world.

In the ancient time, sailing was perceived to be meant for the privileged classes in Rome, Greece, Egypt, and Asia. And even though they would sail the oceans and seas in their massive ships, it wasn't until the 17th century that sailing first became a sport in Holland. Using boats that measured up to 65 feet, the Dutch would use these boats to compete before it became a sport in England and before it eventually expanded to the American colonies. It was then that sailing became an actual sport.

In this article, we'll take a brief look at sport sailing; how it started, developed, and evolved into what it is today.

Table of contents

A Brief History of Sport Sailing

But before sailing became a marvel that it is today, it started by accident when man realized that he could use the power of the wind to propel a boat. Sailing quickly turned into a means of fishing, travel, and was widely used for recreation. While sailboats had been as a means of transportation for centuries, the beginning of sport sailing can be traced back to the early 17th century in the Netherlands.

Many sport sailors of the time had to gather socially to discuss and form yacht clubs to promote this new sport. This was the beginning of the oldest clubs; yacht clubs. Soon after Charles II was given a yacht as a gift by the Dutch, the art of sport sailing quickly spread to other parts and the first yacht club in the world was opened in 1720 in Cork, Ireland.

It was more than a century later in 1844 when the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was opened in the United States. This yacht club was started by a gentleman known as John Cox. Together with his fellow New Yorkers, they would race against other local sailors.

America's Cup

America's Cup was and still is probably the most famous competition and trophy in sport sailing. The NYYC decided to take sport sailing to the next level; an international level. They built a 100-foot sailing yacht; a schooner that they named America. These sailors sailed across the Atlantic to race against their counterparts in Britain. The competitors sailed around the Isle of Wight in England.

The Americans won the inaugural trophy, which was named the Hundred Guineas Cup. They, however, decided to rename the trophy and the competition to the America's Cup. Today, this sailing race remains the oldest sailing competition in the world and arguably one of the most prestigious international events in the world of sport sailing. The Americans dominated the sport for 132 years (1851 to 1983) when they were defeated by Australia.

There have been many changes since the beginning of America's Cup. Most of these changes have revolved around the types of sailboats used in the competition. These types of boats include:

One-design Boats  - These small-sized boats are known for their speed. They generally range from 7-feet to 40-feet in length.

Handicap Boats  - These are sailboats that are designed to allow their users to race at an equal level with larger and deeper boats.

Rating Boats  - These are boats that are meant for sailors who have more skills, experience, and knowledge of the sailing sport. They generally differ in terms of length, sail area, and displacement.

Today, America's Cup is governed by the International Yacht Racing Union, which was formed in 1907. Most rules are put in place to ensure safety and avoid collisions.

Sailing as an Olympic Sport

The first time sailing was recognized as a real sport was in 1896. This was when it was included in the Olympics Games in Athens. Unfortunately, the weather was so bad that sailing wasn't held. As such, sailing had to wait for another four years to make its Olympics debut in 1900 in Paris. At the time, boats were still categorized in weight classes. In the early Olympic Games, women were allowed to compete in the same teams as men but this was changed 88 years later at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.

The Evolving Design of Sailing as a Sport

In the beginning and as we've just noted, sailboats were categorized in weight classes and men and women were allowed to compete in the same teams. But just like any other sport, sailing has had its footing technology and has made significant advances in terms of yacht designs and the use of technology and equipment. Sailboats have become lighter, attained much more speed, and require an even greater technical ability from the sailors.

For example, foiling has become a superb phenomenon in the last ten years. As such, boats have reduced weight to become lighter and fly above the water. There are also other advancements such as routing, GPS, and other technological gadgets that are now available even to the average sport sailors. In terms of technology, sports sailing has indeed come a very long way from the days when sailors had to rely on a mere sextant, a compass, and, of course, raw energy.

Sport Sailing Disciplines

Just like other sports, sailing has different categories and classes. They include:

Fleet Racing - This is a race that involves anywhere from four to hundreds of sailboats. Each team must have at least three races to be considered. The team will have to race the boat around the predetermined course and the team with the lowest score will be the winner.

Match Racing - This revolves around two teams competing against each other like they do in America's Cup. The main aim of this race is to reach the finish line before the opponent. In other words, it's all about being faster and tactical than your opponent.

Team Racing - This is generally a race that involves two teams competing against each other using three boats each. The techniques involved may be similar to those of match racing but with a different twist in the sense that the final tally of a team's boat is all that matters. Generally, a team that scores 10 or fewer points wins the race. As such, teams will use various tactics to help teammates to increase the team's chances of winning.

Offshore Racing - This is a form of a sailing race that involves sailboats covering over 800 miles. It involves the use of ocean-going powerboats and is generally a point-to-point form of sailboat racing.

In essence, there are different forms of sailing competitions that can be considered sport sailing.

Important Things to Do Before Sport Sailing

Sailing isn't just about power. It revolves around the use of skills while also harnessing both your physical and mental powers to power a boat through water using wind. As a competitor, it's, therefore, important to be fit, agile, tactical, and mechanically competent. There are sailing races that can last for hours, days, or even months and this requires competitors to be athletic, skillful, and have the technical abilities to maneuver some of the most challenging situations.

Again, the physical demands of sailing may also vary depending on several factors such as the size of the boat, the number of the crew, and, of course, the weather conditions. For this reason, sailors must train and have a proper diet tailored to their individual bodies and competition needs. They have to be properly hydrated and eat well not just before completion but at all times.

Planning ahead is also important in maintaining optimal performance both during training and throughout each regatta or competition. So whether it's about training, diet, or the competition itself, planning ahead is always a critical part of sport sailing. You should also have enough rest and proper recovery time to ensure that you're rejuvenated and ready for each phase of sailing competition.

So is Sailing the Best Sport in the World?

Whether you've been sailing competitively or for recreational purposes, very few things can actually match the sensation of being out on the water, filling the sails with wind, dealing with the powers of nature, and depending on your skills and experience. This is perhaps one of the main reasons why the art of sport sailing remains one of the most popular sports in the world.

Today, sailing has evolved to become one of the most popular and most challenging sports in the world. In fact, many people do not just consider it a sport; it's a seriously interesting way of life.

Sailing is a sport that involves moving a boat by using the power of the wind. This sport first started in Holland, Netherlands. King Charles II brought the sport with him to England after his exile in the mid-1600s. From there, the sport spread to other parts of the world. Nowadays, this sport is celebrated as a recreational and social activity. Starting in 1851, large competitions have been held to showcase the best sailors in the world. The USA won the America’s Cup from 1851 to 1983.  After that, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland have been bringing home the crown.

There are many boat types used for sailing, from large yachts to dinghy racing.

There are different types of races; fleet racing, team racing, and match racing. Fleet racing include at least four boats. Some of these events include hundreds of participants. Match racing includes two boats competing against each other and the fastest one wins. Team racing involves two teams which have three boats each. It’s a 3-on-3 game and it’s very similar to match racing.

Scoring systems depend on the event (Olympics or America’s Cup). The widely celebrated format for races include short course, coastal or inshore, offshore, and oceanic.

Sailing race

Nowadays, competitions are still held worldwide to showcase the best sailors in the world. Major events that involving sailing are the Olympics, Mug Race, and Cowes Week.

As the years go by, sailing has become very interesting. With the development of technology, boats have become more advanced. But definitely, simpler boats with backward technology have never left the scene.

Yacht crews sailing to Palma warned over whale attacks

Killer whales continue to pose a threat to vessels. | Majorca Daily Bulletin reporter

Last year, a group of killer whales once again attacked a sailing yacht on its way to Palma to take part in the Copa del Rey regatta and today, as the cruising season arrives along the Atlantic coasts of France, Portugal, Spain and through the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean and to the Balearics, the Cruising Association (CA) urges vigilance for potential orca encounters.

The CA continues to share information on precautions and protocols to minimise the risk of encounters and provide guidance on actions to take if an encounter occurs. The CA’s dedicated orca information and reporting portal at http://secure-web.cisco.com/1HUmWGM1d-LdMdA2F9n-LiLEG0gaqZPRhUv1HfDCNabaYiB_4l0gU1-gxn8ZsLFYHxbtdXpTavVGfGtdJJEfKRQAIVMO282jovPZ1XRqySh2CnhThBy56K1O_ioVTImGmz-7nizaCK4HDga4D-2bCp5zy1D7wX5PVTm4qyIonz488u-m2Au1SvZZOgvAQMEJIXE4EaVjVchtlOGiyWWQV0aQ3j3DDJnzpXZoETxjrnHd4TWDZ5ecE5fMFaJCISNDmRGqGRkxeDrX3S0TKDrbZhQ/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theca.org.uk%2Forcas provides a wide range of resources available in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Around fifteen of a population of less than fifty orcas have caused damage to numerous small vessels, at least four of which have sunk. The damage typically affects the rudders and crews can usually make their way to a safe port. To date no-one has reported being seriously injured.

Be Safe, Be Prepared

Since June 2022, the CA has been instrumental in collecting and sharing reports and data on orca interactions along this coastline. In early 2023 there was an escalation in interactions, and there is no reason to indicate the situation will ease in 2024. John Burbeck, CA Orca Project Team Lead, stresses the need for skippers and crews to familiarise themselves with protocols to mitigate potential encounters, saying, “By being prepared and prioritising safety and awareness, skippers can reduce the risk of meeting orca while navigating the affected waters.”

Past behaviour indicates orca typically remain around the Strait of Gibraltar from April to early July as the bluefin tuna exit the Mediterranean, before locating west and north. However, their movements vary each year, making long-term predictions challenging. Although most yachts avoid orca encounters, understanding risks and knowing how to minimise the likelihood of an interaction is crucial.

Orca Locations

Skippers should be aware of the danger zones for orca interactions. In 2023, this extended as far north as Brest in France and through the Bay of Biscay, Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar Straits, north Moroccan coast and along Spain’s Mediterranean coastline. During late April to October, as boats transit the affected waters, the likelihood of encountering orcas increases. Skippers should stay informed of current orca locations, hotspots and trends, which will aid in route planning and decision making.

After four years and hundreds of incidents, researchers remain puzzled why orcas, also known as killer whales, continue to ram boats – sinking a few of them – along the Iberian Peninsula. The origin of these interactions remain a “great mystery,” said Alfredo López, a University of Santiago biologist, but he does not believe the behavior is aggressive. Orcas are large dolphins, López said. And like dolphins, the events could stem from the orcas’ curious and playful behavior, such as trying to race the boats.

López, who specialises in orcas, and his team, Grupo de trabajo Orca Atlántica (GOTA), have tracked these encounters since 2020. The team’s recent study theorizes the orcas could also be exhibiting cautionary behavior because of some previous traumatic incident. GOTA has tracked more than 350 interactions just on the Iberian Peninsula since 2020. Most have taken place along the Strait of Gibraltar, but the orcas’ mischief or self-defense may be spreading north. An incident was reported in June in the Shetland Islands in Scotland.

"OSPREY"

Hunt Yachts Harrier 26-2016-OSPREY Wilmington-North Carolina-United StatesOSPREY 3234641

DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

This New Yacht Is Sailing to Gorgeous, Lesser-known Ports in the Caribbean Sea — and I Was on Board With 'Below Deck's' Chef Ben

E merald Cruises' new Emerald Sakara ship brings guests to smaller ports in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, with an onboard marina and the occasional Bravo-lebrity.

With a couple dozen guests looking on, chef Ben Robinson was showing how to slice and dice a fresh red snapper. “You kind of feel him — but you don’t fondle him,” said Robinson, the fan favorite from the Bravo reality show Below Deck, who’s always ready with a quip. As he pulled a perfect filet off the bone, he explained how to salt the fish and that there’s no more important relationship than the one you have with your fishmonger. “My advice is to always be friendly,” he noted. “I like to support my mom-and-pop [businesses]. If you become familiar with them, they’ll say, ‘Hey, I got this in this morning.’”

The cooking demo, which also featured a ceviche how-to and tips on knife sharpening, was one of many “Chef Ben” moments on my trip aboard Emerald Sakara . It’s the newest 100-passenger vessel from Emerald Cruises, which launched in the fall of 2023, a sibling vessel to the Emerald Azzurra .

During an eight-day voyage in March from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, the reality personality was definitely one of the star attractions. Robinson spent several evenings in the galley, creating special dishes such as a panko-crusted veal striploin stuffed with pesto.

He also hosted a well-attended Q&A about his life in the kitchen — and spent plenty of time connecting with fans, many of whom booked the trip specifically to chop it up with Below Deck alum.

“We definitely booked because of Ben,” said Shannon Welnel , a Montana-based travel advisor who had lots of praise for his cuisine — and the yacht-like atmosphere on board the 100-passenger ship. Other guests I spoke with admitted they hadn’t seen much Below Deck, but were intrigued by the chance to chill with a Bravo-lebrity.

Emerald Sakara

  • With a max of just 100 passengers, Emerald Sakara feels at times like a private yacht, with no lines and no crowds, and outstanding service from a highly experienced crew.
  • Minimalist rooms recall the stripped down aesthetic of Miami Beach or Mykonos, Greece, with pops of color from Missoni Home accents and a sleek-yet-functional bathroom with plenty of storage space.
  • While this small ship has but one restaurant and one poolside cafe, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to meals, whether you’re hitting the breakfast or lunch buffet or choosing from the dinner menu.
  • The onboard marina, which is open in favorable weather conditions, offers watersports and swimming off the stern of the ship.
  • Easy to understand and mostly inclusive pricing covers meals, beverages at mealtime, many tours, and surprisingly speedy Wi-Fi.

The intimate-ship vibe was also one reason the chef wanted to hop aboard. “This definitely has more of a yacht vibe than any other [ship] I've been on,” Robinson told me one afternoon. “A hundred passengers is not a lot,” he said. “I've been on boats with 2,500 passengers, and you really do feel like you're anonymous. But here, the service is great, and you really are treated as an individual and someone important. And you kind of lose that on the big boats.”

While Robinson doesn’t have immediate plans to join another Emerald cruise, he told me that there were plenty of parallels between his life on megayachts and what the Sakara offers its guests. “It’s been incredible,” he said.

I had to agree. The Sakara certainly has much to offer, both in spite of its smaller size and because of it. While it’s available to book by the cabin, like any cruise ship, it still manages to feel at times like a private yacht, particularly when it sails to less-commonly visited ports such as Culebra, on Puerto Rico, or St. Bart’s. In the latter, we dropped anchor near Eric Schmidt’s yacht, Whisper , and had the whole day to explore the glitzy island and its capital, Gustavia. (After a drive around in the morning, I managed to catch the beautiful sunset from the lovely little Shell Beach, right in town.)

“The benefit of being on a small cruise ship like this one is that we can enter small ports and areas where others can’t,” said Robert Kuznin, the captain of Sakara , who previously worked with several cruise lines, including Paul Gauguin, Seabourn, and Virgin Voyages. “For example, when we dropped anchor in Esperanza Bay,” he explained about our stop at the island of Vieques, “there were only two meters under the keel — and that was the shallowest I’ve ever been!”

The ability to go places that larger ships can’t was also on display one morning on St. Kitts, one of the final stops of my trip. It was still early in the morning, but already four mega-ships were docked in Basseterre, the island’s capital. Instead of tying up next to them on the busy cruise pier, we dropped anchor just off the beach in South Friar’s Bay, a long sweep of sand in the island’s southern reaches. There were no crowds to contend with, no paperwork hassles, no touts offering dodgy cab rides. A five-minute tender ride to the beach was all it took to meet our local guide. Time from leaving the breakfast buffet to our first stop? About 25 minutes. Even the most efficient mega-ship would struggle to make that happen — and they can’t drop anchor right off the one of the best beaches on the island.

Other moments aboard Sakara felt like something out of Below Deck . One afternoon, I made my way to the yacht’s marina, a platform at the stern stocked with lounge chairs, refreshments, and water toys such as a floating trampoline and inflatable sea kayaks. I jumped off the stern into the Caribbean and then tried out the ship’s Seabob, a floating gadget that’s like a cross between a Jet Ski and an electric scooter.

As I continued my joy ride, I could see another vessel anchored just north of us. Turns out, it was David Geffen’s private yacht , Rising Sun . Of course, we were there first.

Here’s a closer look at all the amenities of the Emerald Sakara , which sails seasonally in coastal waters in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Staterooms

Welcome to your starship: the stripped down, white-and-gray cabins on Sakara feel sci-fi chic, particularly when the accent lighting is switched on. They’re also, thankfully, spacious and super functional, with ample storage space (including a safe), a small minibar, a coffee station, and a clever headboard built-in that’s a great spot for your charging devices and water bottle. Most of the 50 rooms and suites have verandas; ocean-view staterooms are the exception. Bathrooms are just big enough, with plenty of storage, and are stocked with Espa products and a hair dryer. My cabin, 421, was a 300-square-foot balcony suite toward the aft of the ship on deck four: I never once heard noise from the surrounding cabins or in the hallway, though I did occasionally notice sounds and vibrations from the vessel, something that is common on even the largest of ships. A note on power plugs: my stateroom had U.S.-style outlets throughout as well as USB-A charging ports on either side of the bed, a nice touch.

Bars and Restaurants

Because Sakara is smaller than most cruise ships, it can’t compete on sheer volume of bars and restaurants. Still, the food on board is solid. La Cucina is the only true dining room, with both indoor and outdoor seating; it has somewhat limited hours compared to the round-the-clock dining options on bigger vessels. That being said, I certainly didn’t go hungry: a breakfast buffet is complemented by traditional à la minute options such as omelets and pancakes; lunch is also buffet style with a carving station. Dinner is more restaurant style, with options from an ever-changing daily menu plus always available classics such as Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled salmon, and spaghetti bolognese on offer. (Many dietary restrictions and preferences can be accommodated.)

On my voyage, chef Robinson put together several special plates, including what might’ve been the best dish of the week: a sesame-crusted seared yellowfin tuna with celeriac puree. The Below Deck star also put together a panko veal striploin roulade one night and, another evening, offered a citrus-cured hamachi with, in a touch of molecular gastronomy, “mango spheres.” Elsewhere on board, a poolside cafe, Aqua Café, has quick bites like burgers and flatbreads, as well as sweets and coffee pulled from a Cimbali espresso machine. The cocktails served in the Amici Lounge and the Sky Bar were consistently excellent, mixed by a talented team of pros who’ve previously worked on Seabourn ships and in some of Dubai’s top hotels. One weaker spot was the selection of wine on board: pours at mealtimes are included, but they didn’t rock my boat. A short list of “chairman’s wines,” available at extra cost, included a couple by-the-bottle finds such as 2013 vintage Cristal ($650) and some mid-tier Bordeaux and Burgundy options.

Where Emerald Sakara Sails

Though small, this ship isn’t an expedition yacht. Rather, it’s specifically designed for warm-weather coastal cruising, meaning it spends the lion’s share of its time in places such as the Caribbean and, in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months, the Mediterranean. My trip aboard was spent entirely in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, where passages between ports were short and the seas were often calm. (We did occasionally encounter some swells of up to two meters, or 6.6 feet. I saw many guests wearing medicated patches to prevent motion sickness throughout the trip.) Sakara typically spends a season of several months in a given region, with a variety of cruise lengths offered, ranging from six to 24 days. In 2024, the ship will spend April through November in the Mediterranean. Sakara will return to the Caribbean at the end of the year, through April 2025.

Shore Excursions

Tours off the ship were a strong suit for Emerald, at least on my voyage. Most stops offered a variety of activities, ranging from a simple transfer to a nearby beach to a full-on, multi-hour tour. Usually, I found myself ashore with a very small group of folks — fewer than a dozen — and all the guides Emerald arranged were true pros. Passengers raved about a kayak paddle through the bioluminescent bay on Vieques, something I sadly didn’t try myself. I did, however, enjoy a short guided hike on the island of St. John, to the pristine beach along Salomon Bay, which was all but deserted. The organization of excursions felt flawless to me, thanks no doubt to the crew and shore excursion manager, Pilar Atencio. Worth a mention, too, were Atencio’s detailed briefings on what to expect each day. While these sorts of “port talks'' are common on ships of all sizes, they felt particularly useful on Sakara because of how intimate our groups were; many passengers made a point of attending the pre-dinner talks every night, for info on what to expect about our anchorage, historical background on each island, and detailed info about what each tour offering would entail.

Amenities and Entertainment

Call it small but mighty: Sakara has all the essentials, which is a bit of feat for a ship this size. A cozy spa has wellness and beauty treatments, as well as a small hairstyling and facial studio; morning yoga and stretching are available on deck. The fitness center, with a few cardio machines, a Peloton bike, and a variety of weights and other gear gets the job done. The smallish pool and a top-deck whirlpool were lovely — though I spent most of my time in the ocean: the Sakara ’s marina deck is a key feature, and it was open several afternoons during my trip. It’s like the greatest pool party you’ve ever been to, complete with piña coladas, sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and a trampoline, right off the stern of the ship. It is, truly, as much fun as it sounds like, though it is subject to the whims of weather and ocean currents. Also available in some destinations are e-bikes from Gocycle, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis; during my trip, several guests gave them a spin on the island of Vieques. Sakara also carries a ton of snorkeling gear and beach towels, which passengers can borrow whenever they like. In terms of performances, this isn’t the vessel for Broadway-style shows, but guitarist Jamie Ferguson and voyage director Nathalie Millet added plenty of live music to the trip.

Family-friendly Offerings

The youngest passengers I spoke with on my cruise were in their 20s — and they were traveling with their parents. Sakara is perhaps the perfect ship for families traveling with adult children, since it offers such a diverse array of activities to suit different tastes and activity levels, while visiting intriguing destinations. The ship is also intimate enough that everybody can gather easily for meals — or a swim off the stern — without fighting the crowds common on larger vessels. On the other hand, Sakara is probably not the best choice for families with younger children: there’s no kid-specific programming, and you’re likely to be the only ones aboard with little ones. “Emerald Cruises yachts are recommended for people aged 12 and up, and they must be accompanied by and share a cabin with an adult aged 18 or [older],” a spokesperson shared with T+L.

Accessibility

Sakara is probably best described as somewhat accessible: the ship has elevators to all decks and the crew was, on my trip, very accommodating to those with mobility challenges. There are handrails throughout, and bathrooms feature shower grab bars. That being said, several areas of the ship — the outdoor dining terrace, for example — require navigating at least one step even once you’ve reached the deck in question by elevator. “Due to the nature and size of the ships, wheelchairs and scooters are not allowed to be used on board,” a spokesperson told T+L. When the ship is at anchor, it’s only possible to go ashore by tender or Zodiac, both of which could be challenging for those with limited mobility. As Emerald’s FAQ explains: “Guests with limited mobility will require help from a companion, since the crew is limited.” Also of note: many announcements are made only by loudspeaker with no hearing-impaired alternative.

The Best Garmin Watch for Sailing, Boating and more

  • November 8, 2023

From luxury designs to smartwatch technology and boat interactivity, here's how we crowned the very best Garmin watch for sailors.

sport yachting sailing

With a wide range of watches available from a variety of brands, differing price points and a list of unique specifications, it can be challenging for even the most technologically-minded sailors to keep up with the best on the market. That’s why I’ve made it our mission to bring you the best Garmin watch for any time you spend at sea.

If you’re not familiar with Garmin, the best way to describe the global company is that they bring wearable technology and GPS navigation to the marine world (as well as many other markets).

Dan Bartel, Garmin’s Vice President of Global Consumer Sales, commented on the  MARQ™ Collection in 2019 and said, “For the past 30 years, we’ve created products that have fueled people’s passions.

“And now, we have reimagined the tool watch with MARQ, a series of extraordinary connected instruments, authentic in every detail, an inspiration for new adventures.”

What makes a good Garmin watch for the open water?

Garmin watches are renowned in the fitness world for being top-of-the-line wearables. Many features that attract athletes to this brand, such as extensive tracking, duration and navigation, will also appeal to sailors and boaters alike.

Whether you leave port on a catamaran, cruiser or sailboat, here at Yachting World, we think that the best Garmin watch should have GPS functions, good battery life and health monitoring. While we’re all familiar with using a watch for directions, making calls and sending messages, the options selected take features beyond that and into the realm of having navigation technology on your wrist.

If you’re on the lookout for the  best sailing watch options for racing and cruising , you’re in luck because we found one timepiece with a multiple-start sequence option.

Garmin Quatix 7

Best marine specific smart watch

Specifications: • Facia sizes: Size: 47mm / 51mm • Display: 1.4-inch sunlight-readable color AMOLED display with touchscreen and sapphire glass • Battery Life: Up to 16 days in smartwatch powersave mode and up to 36 hours in GPS mode. • Health and Fitness Tracking: Advanced health monitoring, heart rate monitoring, Pulse Ox, sleep tracking, and body battery. • Navigation: Marine features including GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo support, barometer, altimeter, and compass. • Sports Modes: Preloaded with various sports profiles including rowing, paddleboarding, and swimming. • Smartphone Integration: Smart notifications, Garmin Pay for contactless payments, and compatibility with both Android and iOS devices. • Marine Features: Boat data, sail racing assistance, anchor alarm, fishing calendar, tides, and more. • Water Resistance: Up to 100 meters.

Reasons to buy: It has a large easy-to-read face, incredible versatility for an array of lifestyle activity, health, wellbeing and boat interactivity as well as being customisable to suit individual needs. Includes a dedicated MOB button.

Reasons to avoid:  The battery life isn’t as good as the Quatix 6, it has bright facia which can be distracting, and the touchscreen is pointless without the additional kit it interfaces with.

Debating on upgrading to the Garmin Quatix 7? The next-gen sailing smartwatch includes improvements to strengthen integration with onboard electronics. For instance, the touchscreen model on this watch can be used to control MFD displays, Fusion audio systems and Garmin autopilots.

But if you’re a Quatix 6 user, here are the major changes for the Quatix 7 over the Quatix 6. The main difference is the display it’s bigger and brighter and touchscreen.

If you found darkness or difficulty seeing the Quatix 6 screen, this has been addressed with a much brighter lit-up option. Whilst this might appease a large number of wearers, it can be harsh for some especially if you’re a frequent night sailor like me.  The obvious compromise to this is that the battery life takes a hit if you want an always on display. To eek out the battery life, then you’ll need to switch the display to on demand motion controlled.

The Quatix 7 has integrated more functionality into the Garmin app on the phone, so it’s easier to make changes to the user functionality of various apps within the watch, rather than having to fiddle about doing them on screen as with the earlier Quatix watches.

The Quatix 7 is undoubtedly one of the best watches for sailors and boaters currently on the market . I love mine and feel undressed without it.

Note: We may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site, at no extra cost. This doesn’t affect our editorial independence.

Best Garmin watch for premium luxury design

Reasons to buy:  The watch has weather and tidal data, good OB and GPS functions and streams boat data to your wrist.

Reasons to avoid :  The full extent of capabilities is governed by the onboard technology it’s connected to and it has a premium price.

The MARQ Captain sailing watch comes packed with marine-relevant features that are ideal for the open water.

Functions include weather and tidal data for your home port, a regatta timer to pinpoint starting times, a ‘tack assist’ function to determine whether you’re on the lift or a header, a man overboard button and GPS.

If you’re searching for a top-quality Garmin watch and value luxury quality, don’t let the price tag put you off. The full extent of its capabilities is governed by the onboard technology it’s connected to. Still, possibilities include streaming boat data directly to your wrist wherever you are on the boat and controlling products from the Garmin-owned Fusion range of audio systems.

Essentially this lovely smart time piece packs all of the premium features possibly available from Garmin and encased it in a beautifully presented box, with premium quality wrist straps and a really smart watch body. If I had the money I’d buy this as a gift for my dad as I know he would love it (and he’d be able to keep track of his fitness and health monitoring too).

Garmin Instinct 2S Solar

Best budget Garmin watch for robust multi sport action

Specifications: • Facia Size: 40mm / 45mm / 50mm • Display: 0.9 x 0.9 inches (23 x 23 mm), monochrome • Lens Material: Chemically strengthened glass. • Bezel Material: Fiber-reinforced polymer with metal rear cover. • Case Material: Fiber-reinforced polymer. • Water Resistance: Rated to 100 meters (10 ATM), making it suitable for swimming. • Battery Life: Up to 14 days in smartwatch mode and up to an additional week with solar models

Reasons to buy:  The watch features GPS positioning on charts, barometric pressure and compass, smartphone connectivity, and an incredible amount of styles and colours. Plus, a single charge lasts 14 days.

Reasons to avoid: We’ve  classed as a budget option, but it might also been a bit pricey still for those on a tight budget.

Back in February 2022, Garmin’s all-round time piece which is known as their ‘outdoors watch’ was released. Since then, Instinct 2 has continued to be a top choice for sailors across the world thanks to features like GPS positioning on charts, barometric pressure and a compass.

It has smartphone connectivity, receives emails and texts, and can control music via a phone. This watch also has an inbuilt thermometer, heart rate monitor, and is available in no fewer than 20 different styles and colours.

If you’re a racing sailor, pay close attention to the multiple start sequence options.

Reasons to buy:  The watch suits a multitude of water activities, it’s highly customisable, creates an incredible amount of data available on your wrist and a single charge lasts 14 days.

Reasons to avoid:  The high level of functionality is not for anyone who finds it challenging to navigate technology.

Superceded by the Quatix 7, this watch model is still available and can be found offered at some great bargain deal prices if you shop around.

Tried and tested at length, the Garmin Quatix 6 Multisport Marine Smartwatch has what it takes to be the best Garmin watch for yachting or sailing. Along with its very comprehensive design, it stands out with functions for every type of pastime on the water, including diving. The Quatix 5,6 and 7 are all brilliant pieces of wearable tech and you’ll no doubt be happy with any of them.

Garmin is well known for superior boating instruments. This watch has squeezed all the data of a ten-inch chartplotter into a 1.3-inch round sailing watch. The Bluetooth functionality connects you to a Garmin chartplotter using the free Garmin Connect app.

Some of our other favourite features include that it’s waterproof to 100 metres, sunlight readable and has a night light mode. The watch has a soft synthetic wristband, available in various colours and can be switched between analogue and digital.

What makes this Garmin stand out from other watches is that a single charge will last 14 days with normal use and there is a solar-powered version for continuous self-charging (available at twice the price). I alternate between using a Quatix 6 and  Quatix 7, both are very very good smart watches with a focus on marine activities.

Reasons to Buy:

Extensive Sports Tracking with a large selection of sports modes. Topographic Maps: Navigate with detailed maps Offline Music Storage: Store and listen to music without needing your phone.

Reasons to Avoid:

The premium features come at a premium cost. It might be overwhelming for those not needing advanced features.

The Garmin Fenix 7 is an absolute beast of a smartwatch, catering to adventurers, athletes, and those who demand the very best in terms of features, durability, and performance. If you’re willing to invest, it’s a top-tier choice. The Garmin Fenix 7 is a premium multisport GPS smartwatch that sets the bar high with its rugged build and a plethora of advanced features. Designed for outdoor enthusiasts and fitness fanatics, this smartwatch is a true powerhouse, though it comes at a premium price. Though it isn’t marketed as a sailing watch, it will do the job almost as a well as the Quatix 7 but handle other sports really well too. So if you are into your fitness you might consider this over the Quatix models.

Garmin Venu Sq

• Display: 1.3-inch, 240×240 pixels, color touchscreen. • Battery Life: Up to 6 days in smartwatch mode. • Health Tracking: Heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, SpO2, and built-in GPS. • Sports Modes: Over 20 preloaded sports apps. • Music Playback: Control music on your phone or store music on the watch. • Smartphone Integration: Smart notifications and Garmin Pay. • Water Resistance: Up to 50 meters. • Compatibility: Works with both Android and iOS devices.

Comprehensive health and fitness tracking, including heart rate, sleep, and SpO2 monitoring. Up to 6 days of battery life Waterproof: Suitable for swimming and other water activities.

Onboard music storage is quite limited. Some may prefer a more traditional round watch design.

The Garmin Venu SQ is a solid choice for those looking for a well-rounded smartwatch with an emphasis on fitness tracking and affordability. I really loved this watch when it came in to me for testing. It has elements of the aesthetic of the apple watch but with the Garmin functionality and far superior battery life.

It doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles of the fancy watches I’ve listed in this guide to Garmin watches but it is a worthy watch to consider. It will see you right down the gym, out and about doing regular sporting activity and it can even store a small amount of music in the watch so you don’t need to have your phone with you to play music through bluetooth headphones.

It has a day to day style that is discrete and I like the sutomisable style of the venu series of watches. You can also get this with a round facia so if square isn’t your thing, not to worry, you’ll find a round one in a variety of styles to suit your personal taste.

The Garmin Venu SQ is a feature-packed smartwatch that strikes a balance between fitness and style. With a sleek, square design and a 1.3-inch color touchscreen display, it’s a fashionable accessory that doesn’t compromise on functionality.

Fits a smaller wrist, lots of features to suit almost all users requirements, good for swimmers

Reasons to Avoid:

The tracking option on the Garmin Vivoactive 4S is limited because it requires bluetooth and cellular connectivity, it may take some time to learn how to use it

The Garmin Vivoactive 4 and 4S is a smart watch that gives a whole host of features for tracking and logging health, fitness and sporting activities and comes in a lifestyle compatible case. You can wear this watch every day as a regular watch and it won’t look out of place in most day to day activities, from work and an office to the gym or swimming outdoors.

The companion app, which works for all of the watches in this buyers guide gives access to a whole host of metrics and information. You can also download different screen options to your smart watch from the app too. The straps are compatible with the Garmin quick release strap system so you can swap those out and change them according to your activity or outfit.

Ali from Practical Boat Owner magazine tested this watch at length and had some great results with it.

Garmin Epix

Specifications: • Display: A 1.3-inch, sunlight-readable color touchscreen with a resolution of 260 x 260 pixels. • Battery Life: Up to 14 days in smartwatch mode and up to 24 hours in GPS mode. • Health and Fitness Tracking: Comprehensive health monitoring, including heart rate, sleep tracking, Pulse Ox, and a Body Battery feature. • Navigation: Preloaded topographic maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and a barometric altimeter. • Sports Modes: It offers over 41,000 preloaded golf courses, skiing maps, and a variety of other sports profiles. • Music Playback: Store and play music directly from the watch or stream from music services. • Smartphone Integration: Smart notifications, Garmin Pay for contactless payments, and compatibility with both Android and iOS devices. • Water Resistance: Up to 100 meters.

preloaded topographic maps and turn-by-turn navigation Offers comprehensive health tracking, sleep analysis, and body battery insights, helping you maintain your well-being. Store and play music directly from the watch, eliminating the need for a smartphone during workouts or hikes.

It’s on the higher end of the price spectrum, making it an investment. Its array of features might overwhelm those looking for a simpler, everyday smartwatch.

If you’re confused about the differences between the top Garmin watches, Quatix, Fenix and Epix… then you’re not alone. I’ve compared the top three watches side by side to get a better understanding of what kind of person they are designed for. Essentially the Fenix and Epix are virtually the same watch but with slightly different screen options. The Epix has a red screen option for better night vision preservation and the fenix 7 has memory in pixel screen meaning you have the option of an always on display without killing the battery. Both have the same sports tracking and health and fitness features. The Quatix is very much geared towards the pure boating person with its dedicated man overboard button and marine first focus on onboard features.

If you see a great deal on either the Fenix 7 or Epix, then know you are getting pretty much the same watch with very tiny, subtle differences in the screen.

FAQ: Do I Need My Phone for My Watch to Acquire GPS?

No, all of the above Garmin watches have built in GPS. They do not require the internet to work, nor a phone. They can work independently, tracking your activities or personal metrics. They store this information onbaord until you upload to a suitable other deivce. For best results you should sync your watch to a smart phone from time to time. Especially if you want to download your activities to other apps such as Strava.

The Army—Yes, the Army—Is Sailing a Fleet to Build a Port Off Gaza

Several U.S. Army ships have set sail for the Eastern Mediterranean in support of a relief mission.

The Frank Besson will set up a pier off the coast of Gaza to help provide civilians with humanitarian aid.

The ships are part of a little known Army capability, called Joint Logistics Over The Shore.

A fleet of Army ships from the 7th Transportation Brigade will establish a pier off the coast of Gaza, allowing ships to send food, medical supplies, and other aid to civilians living in the embattled area. As unusual as it sounds, the U.S. Army has ships and mariners prepared to facilitate the flow of equipment and supplies from ships to shore. The capability is meant to allow U.S. tanks and armored vehicles to come ashore where there are no ports.

Army Anchors Aweigh

“The Imperial March” plays over the loudspeaker of a US Army vessel departing on a mission to construct a temporary port for aid deliveries to Gaza pic.twitter.com/hBio42Uewa — W.G. Dunlop (@wgdunlop) March 12, 2024

On Thursday, March 7th, during his annual State of the Union address, President Joe Biden ordered the Pentagon to begin a humanitarian aid effort directed at civilians in Gaza. On Saturday, just 36 hours after the order was given the first ship, USAV General Frank S. Besson departed Fort Eustis, Virginia. On March 12th, four more ships departed Eustis—the Monterrey , Matamoros , SP4 James A. Loux, and Wilson Wharf .

According to USNI News , the Navy is also sending Naval Beach Group 1 and the M/V Benavidez —a roll-on, roll-off transport ship that will carry floating pier modules. Altogether, the effort will involve about 1,000 U.S. military personnel, including 500 soldiers from the 7th Brigade.

The distance from Virginia to Gaza is approximately 6,000 miles, and the Army ships are not exactly fast, with a maximum average speed of about 12 knots. It will take about 25 days for the flotilla to reach Gaza.

Destination Gaza

The Army/Navy task force is tasked with building a 1,800 foot long floating pier from the waters of the Eastern Mediterranean to shore. Exactly where the Army will build the pier right now is an open question, as President Biden stated the military would not enter Israel. The Israeli military currently controls much of Gaza’s coastline. Pentagon planners have likely ruled out areas not controlled by Israel, which would be (by default) controlled by Hamas.

Once the issue is settled, the 7th Brigade will set about constructing what the Army calls a Trident Pier. A Trident Pier consists of several floating sections that are attached to one another and secured in place with anchors. The pier forms both a port for ships to anchor and a drivable road to shore. This allows ground vehicles such as tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles , and trucks to drive directly off a ship like the Benavidez onto the pier, and from the pier to shore.

In the case of Gaza, ships laden with supplies will dock at the Trident Pier and load supplies directly onto aid trucks. According to the Army , once completed, the pier will be able to facilitate the transfer of up to two million humanitarian meals a day. Due to the level of violence in the area and the possibility of attack, U.S. military personnel will not be allowed to go ashore. The pier should be operational within 60 days of the President giving the order.

The 7th Transportation Brigade belongs to XVIII Airborne Corps, the Army’s worldwide crisis response force. In the event of war, the Corps needs the ability to seize or build logistics assets to facilitate the flow of more troops , more equipment, and more supplies. The 82nd Airborne Division is available to seize airfields, while the U.S. Marine Corps would likely be tasked with seizing enemy ports.

In the event there are no ports , the 7th Brigade would be tasked to build them. This is called Joint Logistics Over The Shore (JLOTS) in Pentagon-speak—the ability to form a ship-ready pier where there is none.

The Army frequently deploys JLOTS overseas on training exercises—in South Korea in 2015 and 2017, Kuwait and the UAE in 2020, and Australia in 2023 for Exercise Talisman Sabre. This mission won’t be the first use of a Trident Pier for humanitarian assistance, either. In 2010, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, JLOTS was used to build a temporary pier to handle the flow of international aid to the island country.

Globally, a third of the food produced is lost or wasted, and in Kenya, that figure stands at between 20% to 40%. For Kenya, unlike the developed world, food loss, not waste, is the greater problem, with small-scale farmers, who account for 75% of the total agricultural output in the country, facing a myriad of challenges including inadequate market linkages and a failure to meet the cosmetic specifications for their produce. For a transition, several startups are emerging looking to bridge the market gap for farmers.
