Background information [ ]

Designer Andrew Probert came up with the concept of the captain's yacht while designing the USS Enterprise -D . Although it was never seen in use, it was labeled on the master systems display screen in main engineering and on Commander William T. Riker 's bridge console ("New Ground"), docked at the bottom of the saucer section almost directly opposite the main bridge . Probert suggested possible ways for the yacht to be used during the first season , including not showing the yacht but mentioning it in dialogue, but his ideas were rejected. The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (p. 164) claims that the producers almost used the yacht in TNG : " Samaritan Snare ", but decided to use an " executive shuttlecraft " due to budgetary constraints. According to Patrick Stewart , the yacht would have been called Calypso . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual , p. 164) This name for the yacht was mentioned in the notes to the captain's yacht entry of the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (3rd ed., p. 83). With the latest edition of the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 117), the name has been changed to Cousteau .

A captain's yacht is visible on the underside of several Nebula -class starships, such as the USS Phoenix and USS Prometheus as well.

Rick Sternbach designed similar craft into the USS Voyager and the USS Equinox , known as the aeroshuttle and the waverider , respectively. Like on the Enterprise -D, however, these vessels were only depicted on technical schematics and never seen in operation or referred to in dialogue.

Ronald B. Moore notes in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual that naval tradition would insist on calling such a craft the Captain's gig rather than the Captain's yacht.

Forgotten Trek

The Unseen Enterprise-D

Star Trek: The Next Generation already required more sets than the average television show. It had to cannibalize whatever it could from the motion pictures and Gene Roddenberry wrote two superfluous scenes in main engineering into “Encounter at Farpoint”, knowing that such a large set might never be built if it wasn’t required for the pilot.

Inevitably many parts of the Enterprise -D went unseen: the main shuttlebay, the many observation lounges that presumably line the saucer, Cetacean Ops…

Fortunately we can draw on the work of Star Trek veterans and fans to get a more complete picture of the Galaxy -class starship. Here is a tour of the unseen Enterprise -D.

Main shuttlebay

Enterprise-D main shuttlebay deck plan

For budget reasons, The Next Generation never showed the enormous main shuttlebay that is supposed to take up the bulk of Decks 3 and 4 in the saucer section.

Rick Sternbach, who had worked as an illustrator on Star Trek: The Motion Picture , and who would go on to design many of the props and starships that appeared in The Next Generation and Voyager , drew up the layout of the main shuttlebay in the Star Trek: The Next Generation U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints , which were at least partly based on the blueprints Ed Whitefire had prepared earlier in the 1990s but which weren’t licensed.

It shows a vast complex with about two dozen shuttles, a bunch of workbees, repair shops, fueling stations, cargo processing bays and a central control tower.

Rob Bryan and Stage 9 studio visualized the main shuttlebay for their aborted virtual-reality tour of the Enterprise -D. Unfortunately, CBS put a stop to their project, citing copyright, but we still have the pictures .

Enterprise-D main shuttlebay

Andrew Probert allocated many windows on the Enterprise -D model for observation decks. Having such a large vessel with families, singles, lovers and loners aboard, Probert envisioned those areas as comfortable places where people could go and relax.

“They were simply lounges,” he told Trekplace in 2005, “and they were different sized, ranging from a two-person lounge to a fourteen-person lounge, where you could have family gatherings or parties and they would all be very darkly lit, so you wouldn’t get gross window reflections, allowing you to see outside a lot easier.”

Enterprise-D lounge concept art

Some of those lounges were seen in the first season, including a small four-person lounge in “Encounter at Farpoint” (which was a redress of Dr Crusher’s office) and a Starboard Lounge in the episode “Justice” (for which the crew quarters’ set was used).

After Ten Forward premiered in the second season, no other lounges were seen anymore.

Enterprise-D lounge

Stage 9 as well as Jason B., whose similar Enterprise-D Construction Project was also shut down by CBS, gave us a glimpse of what might have been. They put small lounges on the lower Deck 1, in front of the bridge, a Two Forward behind the large observation windows on Deck 2 and a Nine Forward above Ten Forward in the front of the saucer.

Enterprise-D lounge art

Probert envisioned another lounge behind the four large windows in the underside of the saucer section. He provided Trekplace with a mockup of what this would look like.

Sternbach instead placed a secondary deflector dish in this area in his Star Trek: The Next Generation U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints .

Observation Lounge ramp

A ramp is meant to connect the Enterprise bridge with the observation lounge, which is situated about half a deck lower.

In the real world, the reason we never saw direct scenes between the two sets is that they were disconnected. Picard’s ready room, by contrast, really was adjacent to the bridge.

Enterprise-D bridge ramp

In Stage 9’s visualization, the ramp became a small staircase flanked by relief sculptures of previous ships named Enterprise . These were initially mounted on the wall of the observation lounge but disappeared between the fourth and the fifth seasons.

Cetacean Ops

Cetacean Ops is referred to twice on the show — in “The Perfect Mate” and “Yesterday’s Enterprise”. In the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual , Sternbach and Michael Okuda write that the section is home to several dolphins and two whales, who aid the Enterprise in its navigation.

In the Blueprints , Sternbach places Cetacean Ops on Decks 13 and 14 in the forward section of the saucer.

Enterprise-D Cetacean Ops deck plan

Probert put the section on Deck 7 of another Galaxy -class starship in his concept art for Star Trek Online in December 2005.

Click here to learn more about Cetacean Ops.

Medical Deck

Probert’s main contribution to Star Trek Online was the design of a large medical deck.

Galaxy-class medical deck concept art

With up to one thousand people on board, a Galaxy -class starship could hardly suffice with the four biobeds and one surgical theater we saw on the show.

In the episode “Tapestry”, it is revealed there are in fact three sickbay wards on the ship. “Ethics” makes reference to private recovery rooms. Other episodes mention a diagnostics center, medical labs, a morgue and a nursery.

Enterprise-D sickbay deck plan

Probert’s design includes many of these facilities as well as a spacious reception area. Gareth John Williams visualized two of Probert’s sketches.

Click here to learn more about the Galaxy -class medical deck that wasn’t.

Sternbach places all medical facilities on Deck 12 in his Blueprints . The sickbay we see on the show is only a small “primary ICU” of a much larger complex that includes a biohazard ICU, isolation rooms, surgical suite and trauma stasis unit.

Other areas Probert designed for Star Trek Online included an archeology and a geology lab.

Galaxy-class archeology lab concept art

Ed Whitefire placed a five deck-high mall or “grotto” in the front of the saucer section that seems to have been intended as a mix of arboretum and recreation deck. I don’t believe anybody has visualized it.

Whitefire placed a large, two-deck-high “organic storage” facility behind the large blue windows that are below the doors of the main shuttlebay on Decks 5 and 6. Sternbach, in his Blueprints , puts the arboretum here, as does Alexander Richardson , although the arboretum seen in “Data’s Day”, “Imaginary Friend” and “Dark Page” didn’t have large windows. Maybe that was only part of a larger complex, though?

Enterprise-D

Probert told Trekplace in 2005 that he designed those windows for observation lounges.

Ryan T. Riddle and Mark Farinas place a large arboretum in the back of the saucer of their Ambassador -class starship in “ The Word of God ” with a lobby reminiscent of Probert’s design for Star Trek Online .

The Word of God panel

Computer Cores

“Evolution” showed us a computer access room, but the cores themselves (the Enterprise -D is supposed to carry three) were never seen.

Enterprise-D computer access room

In his concept art for Star Trek Online , Probert places two computer cores side by side in the saucer section. The third is in the stardrive section.

Captain’s yacht

Enterprise-D captain's yacht art

Probert included a “captain’s yacht” in the bottom of the saucer, which Picard could presumably use for personal missions. He volunteered several ideas to show it in the first season of The Next Generation , but budgetary constraints made this impossible.

The only view of the yacht, called Calypso , we have is from Probert’s contribution to the 2010 Ships of the Line calendar. If you look closely, you can see Captain Picard sipping tea behind one of the windows as his yacht is being hauled in.

Great writeup. It’s a damned shame CBS gave Stage 9 a cease-and-desist. I loved being able to walk through the decks of the big D.
It’s plain the ones in charge of CBS have little to no love for the actual show, and what the show has inspired. Way to alienate fans. Stage 9 is rocking, and they even though it’s unfinished, the potential is great. If CBS had a single functioning brain cell they would get in on it and fund it. As it is, they do not deserve to own Star Trek . The Galaxy -class design is supremely elegant, awesome in every way, and completely beautiful. Best design hands down. They should finish Stage 9 – on the basis that it is not about profit, but about love for the show that Roddenberry loved, worked on, and inspired.
Excellent article, cool pics, love the D.
This is great, thank you for putting this together. Really fleshes things out even more, makes it more real, and still so long after how much we love it!
This is great!! Lots of extra details.
Wonderful. Now ILM’s first Enterprise -D study model was quite different as per Memory Alpha . What happened to that model?

The U.S.S Enterprise NCC-1701-D

"Let's Make Sure History Never Forgets The Name Enterprise..." Jean-Luc Picard-2366

"For five hundred years, every ship that has borne the name of the Enterprise has become a legend. This one is no different." – Vice Admiral Nakamura, 2365

The flagship of the Federation, the U.S.S Enterprise-D was constructed in 2362 at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards over Mars and commissioned on February 2363 from the Utopia Planitia Shipyards over Mars. The construction was a massive undertaking, involving thousands of people across many disciplines. On stardate 40759.5, in the year 2363, the  Enterprise-D  was launched from Mars. Final systems completion and shakedown was conducted at Earth Station Mckinley and Captain Jean-Luc Picard took command of the ship on stardate 41148 at the order of Rear Admiral Norah Satie.

Technical capabilities.. .

Saucer separation The saucer of the Galaxy-class Enterprise can separate from the stardrive section, a feature used sometimes to evacuate its civilian and non essential personnel in emergencies or when the stardrive section goes into combat, for the additional combat advantage of having two vessels instead of one, Command The main bridge of the  Galaxy -class  Enterprise  is on Deck 1.  The Enterprise also has a secondary battle bridge on Deck 8 of the secondary hull, for use when the saucer separates.

The Galaxy-class Enterprise is armed with twelve Type-X phaser arrays and three photon torpedo launchers, each capable of firing 10 torpedoes at a time. One phaser array is mounted on the "cobra head" of the secondary hull while a photon torpedo launcher is mounted on the ventral aft of the saucer; both are inoperative while the saucer and stardrive sections are docked. The ship also has a high-capacity shield grid and,at least 250 photon torpedoes. Transportation

The Galaxy-class Enterprise has at least eight transporter rooms and 20 transporter systems. The ship has one large main shuttle bay in the saucer section, supported by two smaller bays in the stardrive section. The ship carries a variety of shuttlecraft and a captain's yacht (according to Patrick Stewart, the yacht is named Calypso, after Jacques Cousteau's research vessel, and is visible on the underside of the Enterprise saucer,  Medical and life support systems Biobeds in sickbay The Galaxy-class Enterprise includes a sickbay and a number of labs and other medical facilities. The shuttlebays, cargo bays, and other areas of the ship can be converted into triage wards. Other areas, such as Ten Forward, can serve as emergency shelters. Crew support Saucer section officer's quarters Various Next Generation episodes show that the Galaxy-class Enterprise has amenities such as holodecks, an arboretum, a school, a gymnasium, amphitheaters, and a bar called 10 Forward. Several Enterprise crew members' civilian family members (including children) are aboard even though the Enterprise routinely faces situations that could easily end with the complete destruction of the ship with all hands. Some civilians also work aboard the ship.

Sensors and processing systems: Galaxy class computer core

12 Phaser arrays 2 Torpedo launchers 250 Photon, Gravimetric, or Tricobalt torpedoes carried Antimatter mines Armor: Deflector shields

After 9 years of remarkable  service, while on a critical mission in 2371, the Klingon Duras sisters obtained the phase modulation frequency of the Enterprise-D's shields over the planet Veridian III, rendering them useless. Although the Enterprise-D destroyed the sisters' ship, damage to the warp drive coolant system prompted an emergency saucer separation The warp core breached moments after the saucer began to move away, destroying the ship's stardrive section. The resulting shock wave disabled the saucer's propulsion and other primary systems, sending it into Veridian III's atmosphere. Caught in the planet's gravity, the saucer section crash landed on the surface, damaged presumably beyond repair. The saucer section was salvaged by a small fleet of Starfleet ships that rescued the stranded crew and cleared all evidence of the Veridian III incident per the Prime Directive. Over the next 20 plus years, the Enterprise D was slowly restored by Commodore Geordie Laforge as a hobby project, where he replaced the destroyed star drive with the star drive of another Galaxy class starship (the USS Syracuse) and restored the Enterprise D to it's original operating condition

The U.S.S Enterprise NCC 1701-D was officially retired to the fleet museum at Athan Prime and replaced by future ships carrying the name Enterprise.

Celebrating the Ships of The Line: USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D

uss enterprise d captain's yacht

The flagship of Starfleet, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D was a Galaxy-class starship and the fifth starship to bear the name Enterprise. She was commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who formally became her first captain on Stardate 41124. The Enterprise was built at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards orbiting Mars in the Sol system and, with a total of 42 decks, the ship was double the length and had eight times the interior space of the Constitution-class ships of over a century earlier. She carried a combined crew and passenger load of 1,012.Defensive systems included 10 phaser banks, 250 photon torpedoes, and a high-capacity shield grid. There were 4,000-plus power systems in all aboard ship. Full acceleration time from reverse, sub-light impulse through nominal top warp speed, warp 9, was 0.03 milliseconds. The ship achieved maximum speed of warp 9.8 maximum when pursued by the entity known as "Q"; at warp 9.3 its engines had passed the red line.

uss enterprise d captain's yacht

By Stardate 43205, she had already logged tens of thousands of light-years since setting out under Picard’s command around Stardate 41153.7. An average day aboard ship, according to Lt. Commander Data, included four birthdays, a secondary school play, two personnel transfers, two chess tournaments, the celebration of the Hindu Festival of Lights, a secondary school play, as well as a wedding and a birth. Some 13 planets were represented among the ship's complement as of Stardate 44247, and the Enterprise crew made official first contact with more than two dozen species. The Borg incursion of 2366 resulted in Decks 23-25 being sliced open by the enemy during the final battle over Earth. The damage led to a refit at Earth Station McKinley that lasted more than five years. As bad as the damage was, it proved to be far less than would have been incurred by the Kamikaze warp-driven collision Commander Riker had prepared as final recourse. During the refit, the Enterprise benefited from a phaser upgrade and a dilithium chamber articulation frame.Later, the Enterprise-D had the distinction of off-loading the original three Runabouts and the first arriving officers at Deep Space Nine. As history has recorded, the U.S.S. Enterprise-D was destroyed in 2371 during the Battle of Veridian III, following an attack by renegade Klingons who’d breached her warp core. Although the saucer section separated before the breach, the force of the explosion caused the section to crash on the planet Veridian III. Fortunately, losses were minimal. By the time of her demise, she’d been commanded by Picard and, only very briefly by William T. Riker and Edward Jellico. And she was followed by the Enterprise 1701-E in 2372. Screen Rant

Star trek: every captain of the enterprise.

Star Trek has featured many starships named Enterprise. Along with Kirk and Picard, here's every Enterprise Captain from each movie and TV series.

Here is a breakdown of all USS Enterprise Captains across the various Star Trek movies, live-action series, comics, and books. Beginning with Star Trek: The Original Series , the Starship Enterprise has been at the very heart of the enduring sci-fi franchise created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966. Of course, the two most famous Captains of the Enterprise are James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), who shared the big screen together in 1994's Star Trek Generations, but Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is quickly achieving greatness in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek has introduced other successful spinoffs set on different starships like Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery , as well as the space station-based Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . But, in the eyes of many fans, it isn't truly Star Trek unless it's about the Enterprise . The men and women who have commanded the Enterprise rank among the greatest heroes in Star Trek, because they know that when they sit in that chair, they can make a real difference. These are the accomplishments of all USS Enterprise Captains from every TV show, movie, and alternate reality.

The 22nd Century - USS Enterprise NX-01

Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) - Star Trek: Enterprise 's titular starship was the first United Earth starship that could travel at Warp 5. Captain Archer commanded it during its missions which created pivotal alliances that ultimately led to the founding of Star Trek 's United Federation of Planets, which Archer presided over in 2161 – marking him among the most important of all USS Enterprise Captains.

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NX-0002

Admiral/Captain Charles Rasmussen - A Federation Starfleet Admiral and instructor at Starfleet Academy, Charles Rasmussen captained the Constitution-class ship NX-0002, during which Rasmussen also sacrificed his life to save his crew. This occurs in an issue of the Star Trek: The Original Series comics called "Shakedown."

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701

Captain/Admiral Robert April - Captain April first appeared in Star Trek: The Animated Series , where he was voiced by James Doohan. In the 23rd century, Robert April was the first Captain of the Constitution -class USS Enterprise NCC-1701 deep space heavy cruiser when it launched in 2245. Christopher Pike was his First Officer during the starship's first five-year mission. Admiral April (Adrian Holmes) is a recurring character in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Captain/Fleet Captain Christopher Pike - The Captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Christopher Pike leads a new five-year mission of exploration. Pike counts Enterprise legends like Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) among his crew. In a few years, Fleet Captain Pike will suffer a horrific accident that leaves him trapped in a wheelchair. Jeffrey Hunter played Pike, Leonard Nimoy played Spock, and Majel Barrett played Number One in the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage."

Vice Admiral/Captain Katrina Cornwell (Jayne Brook) - Starfleet Vice Admiral Katrina Cornwell temporarily assumed command of the USS Enterprise and then later transferred it back to Pike in 2258. This was part of the efforts to keep the Enterprise out of the war with the Klingons. At the Battle near Xahea, Cornwell ends up sacrificing her life in order to save the ship from an undetonated photon torpedo. Before that, in 2257, Cornwell also temporarily commanded the USS Discovery.

Captain/Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) - The most legendar y Enterprise Captain of the 23rd century, Kirk's five-year mission was seen in Star Trek: The Original Series. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) held the dual role of the Enterprise 's First Officer and Science Officer. Kirk's Starship Enterprise engaged in numerous pivotal missions that resulted in Kirk's promotion to Admiral at the end of his voyages. Outside of the main series and movies (and often even outside of the Star Trek universe), Captain James T. Kirk continues to be referenced in animated series such as Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

Captain Zarlo - In the Star Trek comic book series, Kirk gets assigned to take on a secret mission against the Klingons on the planet of Mobita, and Captain Zarlo gets assigned to replace Kirk as Captain of the Enterprise.

Captain Willard Decker (Stephen Collins) - In Star Trek: The Motion Picture , Captain Will Decker was in command of the retrofitted Starship Enterprise when Admiral Kirk demoted him to First Officer and took command of the mission to intercept V'Ger. Decker merged with V'Ger at the end of the film and was listed as "missing in action".

Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) - In 2285, Spock was promoted to Captain and commanded the Enterprise , which was primarily used as a training vessel. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Admiral Kirk once again assumed command when Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) stole the Genesis Device, which resulted in Spock's death.

Captain Lawrence H. Styles (James B. Sikking) - The arrogant and appropriately named Styles was actually the captain of the experimental USS Excelsior , which chased but failed to catch up to the Enterprise , ending up stolen and used in Kirk's mission to resurrect Spock. In the Star Trek novel "Prime Directive," Styles temporarily assumed command over the Enterprise during its refit after it was severely damaged. Styles has a similar attitude to Kirk, which is why they severely dislike each other (and mainly why their dynamic works).

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A

Captain James T. Kirk - After stealing the Enterprise to resurrect Spock, and subsequently saving Earth from a space probe seeking to communicate with humpback whales in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , Admiral Kirk was demoted to Captain and given command of the new USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A. Kirk's Enterprise-A in Star Trek V : The Final Frontie r and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country met God and helped secure peace with the Klingon Empire before the Enterprise-A was decommissioned.

The 23rd Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B

Captain John Harriman (Alan Ruck) - The Excelsior -class USS Enterprise-B was launched in 2293 under the command of Captain John Harriman. Their shakedown cruise is infamous for encountering the Nexus, which resulted in the presumed death of Captain Kirk, as seen in the prologue of Star Trek Generations.

The 24th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C

Captain Rachel Garrett (Tricia O'Neill) - The Ambassador -class USS Enterprise-C made only one appearance, in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise". The Enterprise-C was meant to be destroyed at Narendra III while defending a Klingon outpost from a Romulan attack, but it fell through a time vortex that altered the timeline. Captain Garrett died before the Enterprise-C could return to its proper era and set the timeline right.

The 24th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) - Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Galaxy -class USS Enterprise-D was designated as the flagship of the United Federation of Planets. Under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the Enterprise-D's numerous missions involved multiple first contacts with new species, diplomatic and military engagements, and scientific pursuits. The Enterprise-D was destroyed on Veridian III in Star Trek Generations but the D was rebuilt and saved the galaxy one last time in Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Acting Captain William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) - In TNG 's "The Best of Both Worlds" two-parter, Captain Picard was abducted by the Borg and turned into Locutus. Commander William Riker became the Enterprise-D's Acting Captain and led the successful rescue of Picard and defeat of the Borg, after which Picard resumed his role as Captain of the Enterprise.

Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox) - Perhaps the most despised Captain of the Enterprise, Edward Jellico was assigned to take over the Federation flagship when Picard went on a secret mission and was captured and tortured by the Cardassians in the "Chain of Command" two-parter. After alienating the crew and clashing with Riker, Jellico returned the Enterprise-D back to Picard once he was rescued.

The 24th Century - USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E
