GEORGE SZABO AND GUY AVELLON ARE THE 2023 STAR NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONS

star class racing sailboat

The well-established American and Canadian team did it, in a week of light and unstable wind

Vancouver, BC (June 3, 2023) - On this final day of the 2023 Star North American Championship, hosted by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, the 30 teams woke to sunny clear skies with the hope of early westerlies and completing two races in English Bay. However, as the saying goes, “it never does this here”, Mother Nature had other plans.

The race committee expected a flood tide all day with breeze coming in at 10-12 knots from a bearing of 260. The low pressure system offshore thwarted expectations, the easterly breeze deteriorated as the west breeze materialized to the left of 260 and week below 10 knots.

Patience was key on Day Three of the 2023 Star North American Championship in Vancouver, CAN

Vancouver, BC (June 2, 2023) - The third day of the 2023 Star North American Championship, hosted by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on English Bay, proved to be another day of patience and frustration. The morning was cloud-less blue skies with hope of the westerlies coming in early to be able to complete the two races scheduled for the day. However, the forecast south-southwesterly for the greater English Bay materialized as a northerly, locally known as “ Where the wind goes to die.”

2023 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP DAY TWO

star class racing sailboat

Day two of the Volvo Penta 2023 Star North American Championship, hosted by Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in English Bay started as a completely different day from yesterday. Sailors and Race Committee did not have to wait through an overcast easterly wind blowing in “the wrong direction”. Instead, today the predominant westerly was filling into English Bay by 11 o’clock with sunny skies and the race area was ready for an on-time start at 1205.

2022 STAR CLASS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: THE STAGE IS SET TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENT

star class racing sailboat

The Eastern Yacht Club on Boston’s north shore, one of the USA’s most preeminent clubs, is home to the 2022 Star Class World Championship presented by Bacardi from September 8-17.   Marking the 100 th  Anniversary since the first Star Worlds in 1922, the Championship represents a significant moment in history, reflected in the attendance by sailors from around the world who will compete to write their names on the Star World Championship Trophy, titles and prizes.   Following four days of inspection to ensure compliance with class rules, the practice race got underway today, Saturday, September 10, followed by a cocktail hour hosted by Bacardi, which no doubt will be a popular post-race daily gathering throughout the Championship.   “The International Star Class Yacht Racing Association is beyond proud to be celebrating this historic achievement, the first by any international class,”  commented Tom Londrigan, Star Class President.  “Over the past 100 years, the role the Star Class has played in international sailing cannot be overstated. The Star has led with innovations, not least modernizing itself, while retaining its distinctive one-design hull shape.   The Star’s popularity continues, spanning generations. Beloved by all ages, the youngest sailor competing here is Vincent Schrader (GER), 23 years old, with the oldest, John Chiarella (USA) at 85 – all thrilled to be competing. John Chiarella is the Star Class Commodore.  Thank you to our hosts the Eastern Yacht Club, to the Star Class sailors and volunteers. We look forward to a wonderful week.”   Roll Call of Legends As teams made their final preparations, a look around the hectic boat park sees multiple World Champions, Star Continental Champions, Bacardi Cup winners and other famous names set for some super competitive racing.   Every Star World Championship is a battle of legends and winning the 100 th  anniversary event will be something special, something dreams are made of. One hundred and sixty eight sailors from thirteen nations are in the quest for glory, with fourteen former World Champions in the mix.   Among those installed as favorites are defending 2021 Star World Champions Diego Negri/Frithjof Kleen (ITA/GER), racing here with different teammates, Negri is back with crew Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA) and Kleen is crewing for Paul Cayard (USA).   Racing The six-race series features a traditional one long two-hour race per day, from Monday, September 12 through to Saturday, September 17, with a lay day scheduled on 14 September. The series discard will come into play after five races.   The revered Star World Championship Trophy will be presented to the winning team, with prizes to the top five overall, along with trophies to top placed teams in the Under 30, Masters, Grand Masters and Exalted Grand Masters divisions, as well as daily and series prizes.   Enduring Legacy In tribute to the heritage of the Star Class, teams were invited to choose a sail number to mark a moment in Star history which resonated with them, and a read down the sail numbers reflects plenty of personal stories and memories.   Larry Whipple chose 1922 to mark the inaugural worlds, and as one of the creators of the ‘Star Class Legacy Foundation’ his goal is to introduce future generations to this versatile, technical and challenging boat.   Like many former World Champions, Paul Cayard opted for the year he won the Star Worlds, and will race under ‘1988’, while his son Danny chose ‘1969’ to reflect the year his grandfather Pelle Pettersson claimed the title.   Celebrations From the racetrack to shoreside, the 100 th  Anniversary will embrace plenty of celebrations and socials, with dinners, cocktail parties and live music. Every former Star Class World Champion alongside many other celebrities have been invited to the Gala Dinner hosted by Bacardi on Wednesday, September 14, to join teams for a night of celebration to remember.   The Star Class is renowned for its camaraderie, and the post-race hospitality is set to make this a Championship to remember for many years to come.   Celebrating the Star Class legacy, the official Anniversary Book, ‘ 100 Years of Gold Stars’  written by Carol Cronin, chronicles the story of the Star Class from the drawing board to the present day, presenting a unique history of facts, figures, anecdotes and first-hand accounts, illustrated with stunning photos. Teams and fans can also memorize the moment with  commemorative apparel .

Records of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association

Manuscripts collection 208, history of the international star class yacht racing association.

The Star Class was founded at Port Washington, Long Island, in 1911. Initially 22 Stars were built. Fifteen went to owners at the American Yacht Club in Rye, New York, and the remainder to other clubs on Western Long Island Sound. Since then the rig has been improved and modernized several times, but the hull design remains unchanged.

In January 1922, the Star Class Yacht Racing Association was created at a meeting in New York City. A constitution and a set of by-laws were adopted, and five fleet charters granted. This was the first one-design association, and with far-sighted leadership was nursed through its formative years into the successful international organization that its members enjoy today. With over 160 local fleets in 27 countries, it is considered the world’s greatest one-design racing class. Approximately 8,000 Stars have been built to date (1989), all unified under the umbrella of the I.S.C.Y.R.A.

International officers include the President, Vice Presidents, Secretary, and Treasurer. Class policy is set by the International Governing Committee, with representatives from Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. Some tasks are handled by special committees such as the Administrative, Judicial, Development, Technical, and Measurement committees. There are also fleet captains and secretaries, district secretaries and continental vice presidents, all performing various local functions.

A monthly newsletter “Starlights” is published, along with the annual year book, “The Log”. These publications contain descriptions and accounts of club events, and more importantly, race results, class rules and regulations, specifications, and other by-laws of the Association (The G.W. Blunt White Library has a complete set of “Starlights”, and “The Log”, cataloged and available for research.)

For a more detailed history of the I.S.C.Y.R.A. we suggest Forty Years Among the Stars, by George Elder, pub. 1955. A copy is in the Library’s collection cataloged as: Rare Books GV 823 I5.7 E4.2 ALSO: A History of The Star Class; The First Eighty Years, by C. Stanley Ogilvy, pub. 1991. A copy of this book is also in the Library’s collection. (Revised Jan. 1994)

Scope and Content

The Archives, currently about 3,000 pieces, is contained in acid-free document boxes and file folders, and is shelved in our manuscripts vault. The first 17 boxes represent the initial gift of records received in 1989. Boxes 1 – 12 are organized by committee and are chronologically arranged. Here one will find Administrative Committee minutes, International Governing Committee papers, Development Committee correspondence, numerous measurement and technical reports, plans, specifications, and Judicial Board records. Boxes 13 & 13a contain various Fleet Charters granted between 1922 and 1985. Box 14 has trophy records and related photos, while Box 15 contains George W. Elder’s manuscript for his book, Forty Years Among The Stars. Two boxes hold miscellaneous files and numerous race programs, circulars, brochures, and other publicity.

Boxes 18 – 31 contain material received in 1990 and is organized in the same fashion as the records previously described. Consequently anyone interested in the papers of the Technical Committee must see Boxes 11, 21 & 22, etc. Correspondence, and related papers for the World’s Championships, 1942 – 1991, can be found in Boxes 26, 27, & 27a. Box 32 has additional papers received in 1995, which are clearly identified in the folder descriptions.

Of special importance to the Archives are the Registers for Star Class boats, numbers 1 – 5100 recorded between the years 1911 and 1974. These 17 volumes are arranged by boat number, and are listed in this Inventory following Box 17.

One Design Profile: Star Class

April 27, 2013 by Sail1Design Editor Leave a Comment

“The class of champions”

In the past one hundred years, the Star has established itself at the forefront of the international sailing community. The first one-design class and core Olympic racing yacht since 1932, the Star attracts sailors of varying ages and skill levels from all over the world. With nearly 2,000 boats competing annually and over 170 active fleets world-wide, the development of the class is not likely to slow down in the foreseeable future.

star class racing sailboat

Designed in 1911 by naval architect Francis Sweisguth, the Star was born to replace the 17-foot “Bug,” which was one of the most popular keelboats at the time. By May 1911, the first Star class regatta was held on Long Island Sound and featured five of Sweisguth’s new boats. By 1922, the Stars already numbered in the hundreds, thus leading to the foundation of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA).

star class racing sailboat

Just under twenty-three feet in length, the hull is long and narrow and features an integrated bulb keel positioned just aft of the mast. In adherence to strict class rules, the Star weighs 1,479 pounds and is typically constructed of fiberglass. Older wooden hulls can still be found from time to time, but rarely in competition. The hull has gentle, sweeping chines leading toward the water line that not only provide a speed advantage, but attribute to the yacht’s aesthetically pleasing appearance.

During the yacht’s one hundred year history, new features have been incorporated into the design in an effort to maintain the class’ position as the pinnacle of the international racing community. The class association began asserting a control over new refinements, not to stifle progress, but to maintain a level of competition based more on the skill of the sailor than the technological advancements of the yacht. Some of the features include:

  • Adjustable jib leads
  • Crew hiking vest
  • Suction bailers
  • Unique, circular boom vang
  • Whisker pole
  • Strict class association sail measurements

One of the interesting features of the Star is the hiking vest. The vest is worn by the crew and allows him or her to adopt a unique hiking position by “drooping” their body over the side of the hull. In addition to the vest, the Star also features a circular vang system. Designed for the star, but eventually adopted other classes, the circular vang system provides a safe means to deal with the enormous loads of the yacht’s large sail plan.

star class racing sailboat

Numerous champions of the sailing world spent time sailing the Star and hold prestigious international titles. A Star Class World Championship is often considered on the most coveting trophies in all of sailing. Despite the high level of competition at top tier events, the Star also offers opportunities to local and amateur sailors. The depth of skill level and opportunity is unrivaled by any other racing class. Sailors looking to compete at the local level can often gain experience with the boat and progress up through the levels of competition, not to mention enjoy the thrill of sailing such an incredible boat.

Get involved with the Star Class! If you want to begin racing there are plenty of Stars out there looking for a good home. Thanks to the regulation in design features, many older Stars perform just as well as their newer counterparts and run at affordable prices. If you are a former college sailor or young professional looking to stay active at the highest level of competition or looking for a fast boat to sail at the local level perhaps a Star should be your next boat…

Sadly, in 2011, it was decided that the keelboats would be removed as an Olympic class following the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Recently rumors began to circulate of comeback for the 2016 Games; however these were quashed almost immediately by the ISCYRA. Despite being struck from the Olympic books the Star class has showed no signs of losing momentum. Huge turnouts for Barcardi Race Week and the 2012 Star Winter Series appear to have breathed new life into the yacht. With hundreds of local regattas scheduled this year and dozens at the internationals and championship level, the Star class remains strong

Although it is always disappointing to have a day without racing during such an exciting regatta - it was the right call by the race committee. The fleet progressed down the river and onto the lake for an on the water delay, and ultimately the call was made to end races for the day - marking the end of the regatta. Hats off to Carol Ewing and her entire race committee for excellent race management throughout the regatta.  The volunteerism shown both off and on the water this week was tremendous and made for an excellent experience for competitors, spectators, and race management. This is a true testament to both the Star Class and Cleveland Yachting Club as these days, it’s hard to find volunteers for great events like these - it takes a village!

HERE WE GO, THIS IS STAR RACING AT THE 2023 WESTERN HEMISPHERE CHAMPIONSHIP

Cleveland, OH, USA  - The fleet started on time on Tuesday with an 1100 first warning. Conditions were breezier then the day before with steady wind 10-15 knots, gusts up to 20 knots. Star Winter Series

Star winter sailing – done right.

Star Winter Series

The Stars Come Out In Winter

The history of the International Star Class is perhaps the richest of any racing keelboat in the world, and much of that history has been written in South Florida.  It’s now time to update that history with a new classic – the Star Winter Series .

For half a century, the world’s best sailors have brought their “Starboats” (as their crews call them) down to the beautiful waters of Biscayne Bay for the best in competition and ambiance in one of the world’s premiere sailing and vacation destinations.

With the Olympic Era over (for now), used Stars are a great value for sailors looking for a fabulously rewarding boat to sail in a class with legendary competition. A stunning performer in all conditions, the Star is a surprisingly good value for any two-person team, and with one of the sport’s best-organized Classes, boats hold their value exceedingly well.  For a wealth of information on the history and design of the Star, check the Star Class website.

Beginning in 2012, Starboat owners and crews will be able to show off their Stars during the inaugural Star Winter Series (SWS).  Four weekends plus the 4-day Star Midwinter Championship makes the SWS the most intense winter series anywhere, designed to maximum racing time while minimizing hassle and expense.

Store your boat all winter long just meters from host Coral Reef Yacht Club , and get up to 20 days of sailing between November and March.  There’s easy launch, easy haul access and assistance with every step of the process up to a full concierge service – you decide.  Stay at a five-star spa or an economy hotel – you have the luxury of both in nearby Coconut Grove.

The Stars come out in winter.  You should be here, too.

STAR CLASS VINTAGE GOLD CUP DAY 3

star class racing sailboat

Sailors were hoping for more racing today

The winds did not develop as hoped. No races sailed

Lars Grael wins for the second year in a row

GULL LAKE, MICHIGAN – The Vintage Gold Cup and ISCYRA announce the final results for the 2023 Vintage Gold Cup. For the second day in a row all races were canceled; the results remain the same as after first day of racing. The winners of the 2023 Vintage Gold Cup are Brazilians Lars Grael and Mauricio Bueno with a 5-1-1 performance. Grael is now a back-to-back winner of the Vintage Gold Cup in his boat Star of the Sea.

In second place is local skipper Josh Powell and his crew Luke Lawrence of Stuart, FL with finishes of 1-8-3. In third is the Illinois team of Joe Londrigan and John Wysockey who finished 2-10-8.   FINAL RESULTS

The morning started out with a dense fog over the lake and no winds yet the forecast did call for light winds by 12noon. As the fog lifted, the sun came out and the wind tapered off. Two starts were attempted but both ended with general recalls. With no measurable wind nor any signs of such on the horizon, the race committee was facing a time-of-day deadline and canceled all racing for the day.

STAR CLASS VINTAGE GOLD CUP DAY 2

  • Races canceled for Day 2
  • Many activities for the sailors to participate on shore

GULL LAKE, MICHIGAN – The Vintage Gold Cup and ISCYRA canceled the three scheduled races for day two of the Vintage Gold Cup. Slight breeze was visible on the lake in the morning, with little to no pressure. As the clouds burned off, the sun came and took away the little breeze that was left on the lake.

The results are still as follows; Brazilians Lars Grael and Mauricio Bueno in first with a 5-1-1 performance on day 1.  In second place is local skipper Josh Powell and his crew Luke Lawrence of Stuart, FL with finishes of 1-8-3. In third is the Illinois team of Joe Londrigan and John Wysockey who finished 2-10-8.  Full results

Throughout the rest of the afternoon, sailors will be found golfing or playing pickle ball at Gull Lake Country Club, while some stay on the dock to sail remote controlled sailboats with their fellow competitors. This evening the Vintage Gold Cup will hold a “Meet the Boats” event to show the Gull Lake community the beauty these wooden Star boats have.

Three more races are scheduled for tomorrow.  The wind forecast, if correct, will remain light but sailors will remain hopeful to get at least one more race in.

STAR CLASS VINTAGE GOLD CUP DAY 1

star class racing sailboat

GULL LAKE, MICHIGAN – The Vintage Gold Cup and ISCYRA announce results of the first day of racing in light and variable winds.  The three scheduled races were completed with very close racing.  At the top of the days result are Brazilians Lars Grael and Mauricio Bueno with a 5-1-1 performance.  In second place is local skipper Josh Powell and his crew Luke Lawrence of Stuart, FL with finishes of 1-8-3. In third is the Illinois team of Joe Londrigan and John Wysockey who finished 2-10-8.  For full results

Sailors knew going out that the lake was going to be tricky due to the light winds and its easterly direction.  The race committee was able to manage the shifty winds quite well, getting high praise from the sailors.

Three more races are scheduled for tomorrow.  The wind forecast, if correct, will make sailing even more challenging as the velocity declines from today.

One-Design Wingfoil Racing Takes Off

  • By Fiona Wylde
  • March 19, 2024

windfoiling in Arendal, Norway

the simplicity of putting your equipment in the back of the car, driving to a local sailing center or beach, and getting on the water to rip around with friends at high speeds with minimal fuss is appealing to people of all ages and ability levels, which is why the emergent sport of wingfoiling has taken off. One-design racing is the next frontier.

Naturally, when a sport is new, its pioneers push limits to see what is possible, and it has been absolutely crazy—in a good way—to witness what’s been happening in the wingfoil world. Two years ago, a backflip on wingfoil equipment was practically unimaginable, but tricks today are far more complex, and racing speeds are at near scary levels. But landing mind-bending tricks and doing 40 knots on wingfoil equipment represents only the top of the wingfoiling pyramid, not the masses.

In order to promote wingfoiling as an inclusive windsport, Starboard, an international watersports company based in Thailand, is focused on building a pathway for individuals and families to sail together, improve, compete, and participate in wingfoil events with limited barriers to entry. Starboard’s X-15 is the first such purpose-built package for one-design wingfoil racing.

The concept behind the X-15 Class is to have wingfoilers sail on the exact same equipment—which provides fun, safe and fair racing—while also building pathways for the development of young athletes and the nascent sport of wingfoil racing as a whole. To make it feasible for an adult weighing 180 pounds to sail on the same equipment as a youth sailor, the X-15, developed by Starboard, a manufacturer of windsurfing and wing gear, will have different equipment standards for the age divisions of U13, U15, U17, U19, and Senior. Every X-15 set includes the same FreeWing, an X-15 board, and the same Martin Fischer-designed Starboard foil. There is an option to purchase two additional Starboard foil front wings to accommodate sailors of different sizes and for varying weather conditions.

Initially, sailors will be allowed to race in different age groups, but they must use the equipment of the age class in which they are sailing. And, in order to ensure that wingfoilers can foil in very light conditions and continue racing with their same wing in windy conditions, FreeWing, the wing developer of X-15, has created an innovative reefing technology that removes the trailing edge of the wing to reduce the overall size by about 1 square meter.

The materials used in the larger FreeWing X-15 wings are built with the new material, built for strength, anti-stretch, and light weight to support the wing bladder. The FreeWing’s canopy is built with newly developed materials to make the wing durable and to prevent stretching. The smaller wings are built with Dacron in the leading edge, a move to keep costs lower for developing youth classes.

The complete X-15 package for a U13 sailor—with a 4.5-square-meter wing and an 82-liter board—is priced at around $4,214, and the Senior package, with a 6.5-square-meter wing and 95-liter board, is priced at around $5,601. With an expected high demand this spring, equipment packages will be allocated to key development markets first.

Exhibition X-15 Class races were staged in Europe in 2023 and at the World Sailing Youth World Championships in Brazil, and the class’s focus in 2024 is to first develop regattas exclusively for youth sailors. The priority is on creating a fun and inclusive racing environment. The first international youth events are slated for June 2024, and as the class continues to grow, senior divisions will be added to certain events.

Fiona Wylde, of Hood River, Oregon—a windsurf, stand-up paddleboard and wing world champion—serves as the X-15’s first class manager and is founder of Wylde Wind & Water, a nonprofit focused on youth watersports safety and development.
