The Tasteful Hawaiian Eatery With A Hidden Cocktail Room • Liholiho Yacht Club

Ashlyn Davis

Say Aloha to the eatery that everyone’s trying to book for its dangerously good tasting menu and hidden basement bar.

The bright spot is inspired by the early 80’s “pop up” parties that Hawaiian uncles used to throw after a day of sailing. Traditionally, a small-scale, informal “lūʻau” would feature grilled foods, music, ice-cold beers and a live band for anyone to enjoy. A small fee would be charged purely to cover the costs, allowing them to uphold what became a way of life. While Liholiho Yacht Club isn’t on a yacht or even near a marina, the concept has been carried through with a welcoming finesse that’s worth the 3-month wait.

Eat like Prince Kuhio at an Ohana Table

View this post on Instagram

“Ohana” meaning family, is exactly the appetite size you’ll need to bring to this feast. You can expect Chef Ravi Kapur to serve up 10-12 Mmm-evoking, shareable dishes. The highlights include tuna poke, sesame oil, radish and nori cracker or duck liver toast, jalapeno with pickled pineapple. The meal will cost around $62 per person (excluding gratuity and drinks), with no less than 8 and no more than 12 guests. There are only two Ohana tables available which you’ll need to book 90 days in advance, so keep an ear to the ground.

Louie’s Gen-Gen cocktail room

While this highly Instagrammable spot, with brick walls, comfy turquoise sofas and hot pink sunsets, is below the main dining room, it has a completely different identity. By day it’s a bright brunch spot, and a vibey, boozy cocktail bar by night. You could sip on a “Last Mango in Paris” while you wait for a table or settle in and order a waffled grill cheese and local Dungeness crab, served with nori chips, while the DJ spins away the night.

As with the original parties, this trendy spot is hugely popular-with a 3-week reservation waiting list for a dinner table, it’s best to plan ahead. If you’re not the type to know what you’ll be in the mood for in a month’s time, then arrive at 4:30 just before opening time to secure a spot at one of the bars.

Michelin guide’s point of view.

There are no yachts to be found at its current Mission residence, but hordes of locals and enthusiasts remain quite eager to book passage on Liholiho's love boat. Fusing Californian technique with the flavors of Chef/owner Ravi Kapur’s native Hawaii, this earthy, bustling, and airy space is known for strong cocktails, shareable plates, and near-impossible reservations. Walk-ins are welcome, but make sure you arrive in time to beat the crowds. Pivoted around a large, open kitchen, the dining room hums with groups savoring the likes of short rib bao or whole fried fish marinated with coconut and turmeric. If you turn your nose up at Spam try the house-made version. It just might convert you.

Liholiho Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact, michelin guide's point of view.

My wife and I visited Liholiho after a LONG workday. I was pleased to find an available reservation without booking a week or more in advance. We arrived early and our table was ready. The staff was pleasant, attentive, but not intrusive. We shared one... appetizer, one entre, and one dessert. Everything was superb. Do NOT MISS the Backed Hawaii. It was even better than the Swordfish, which I highly recommend. The bill was a tad more than we would have liked ($90+), but we were very pleased with the overall experience. Give 'em a try. Also, if you plan to stroll there look at the topography. The restaurant is definitely UPHILL from mission street, Union square, Yerba Buena, and the Embarcadero. Walking through many places in SF is kind of dicey these days. So a quick uber/lyft/ or taxi is probably best. We got a ride for ~$10 each way. More

We visited last night. Liholiho has a fabulous vibe & everyone was just lovely. The food is out of this world. Just vibrant & interesting & novel & utterly delicious. We had two fish dishes to share - the cod & the swordfish & both... were so fresh & the accompanying elements made each dish unique. We didn’t order appetisers as we wanted to leave room for dessert but we shared the chips & kimchi dip which again were just delicious and unique. Desserts were sublime & beautifully presented. Would highly recommend booking a table here for whenever you can - they were rightly busy all night. Special shout out to Alejandro who looked after us so wonderfully and made the whole experience even better. We will definitely be back next time we visit S.F. More

I liked this place! it is worth the hype in my opinion. The vibe in liholiho is great, music is on point. servers and bartenders are friendly and approachable. The castaway is def a hit, I usually don't like sherry, but this one is super... good. With smooth and creamy and not being too sweet, We ordered the lobster as appetizers. Actually this can be an entree given the portion! It is damn delicious, love their source with black beans. Though being a meat lover, I tried the whole fish tail and didn't regret a bit! It is huge in portion, and full in flavor. We didnt get the spam which every one is raving for, probably next time! Minus one star is dessert is actually not that impressive, baked alaska is good in presentation, but just around average in taste. Also, the bathroom is not clean enough.. We will be back next week going to try more items such as shortribs or wagyu steak! More

The game hen was not properly cooked, I should have sent it back, parts of it were still raw. Yeck! No wonder my stomach was in such a state last night. Otherwise, the swordfish main was great. But will all the mains, they are made... for two! I would go for the appies, then share one main if you have a partner. But avoid the game hen. And yes, my bad for not saying anything. And no, there is no view of the water from this very "modern" eatery. More

I was put off even before we went to the restaurant because of the impossibility of making a reservation. There were no spots earlier than 10pm available for about a month, which was the whole period that it was possible to make a reservation for.... I thought it must be a mistake so I called the restaurant. I was given a vague explanation and felt I was being given the runaround, so decided to look at the Yelp reviews and learned that if one gets there before the restaurant opens at 5pm there's a good chance of getting a walk-in table. We did this but were not able to get a table because there were about 8 people ahead of us, and were told there was a 2-3 hour wait. We opted to wait in the downstairs room because the seats were more comfortable than the high stools at the bar. We tried a couple of appetizers and had drinks. I did think that the food must be good since it seemed so popular, but it was only average. The beef tartare was not that flavorful and the crackers that went with it were stale. The tuna poke was like the poke you get from the supermarket in Hawaii. My partner was given about 1/4 inch of wine. They heard our sarcastic comments about it and gave him more wine for his second drink. We went back up to the bar when we found out we couldn't get the full menu downstairs and ordered a couple more appetizers. I was not impressed with anything I ate there. What annoyed me the most was that the whole time we sat at the bar, most of the tables were empty. Why all the fuss about giving us a table? Are they trying to seem trendy and important? We went home and I never did get a call from the restaurant to say they had a table for us. The whole experience was really ridiculous. In addition, we spend part of the year living in Maui, and this food did not even resemble Hawaiian food. More

A friend recommended this place, and I made a reservation literally the earliest date that I was allowed to (can only reserve 30 days in advance) and the earliest time available was 9:45. But it was worth it; every dish we ordered (family style) from... the yellowtail appetizer to the short ribs with bone marrow were all amazing. Felt it was definitely worth the late time slot (it was definitely busy until around 11:30 and was a Wednesday night) More

I was looking forward to dining at Liho-Liho for a long time due to its popularity. We finally booked a table and while the food was really good, it wasn’t amazing in my opinion. Also service wasn’t great. I feel like the waiters were not... very friendly and didn’t give us much attention. For some reason, also, I got VERY sick when I got home. So it just made my whole experience worse. More

An impossible place to get into, Liholiho offers a little Hawaiian flare on the side streets of San Fran. The service was really laid back but attentive. It's a higher priced restaurant but the service didn't nor the ambience made me feel like it was... the typical high priced restaurant. My quick down and dirty feedback is: - Popcorn - app that was good and nicely seasoned - Soft Shell Crap - with soy, ginger and pineapple - recommended - Brokaw Avocado - fried green beans and avocado - good - Kimchi Fried Rice - best thing on the menu! - Opah - a fish that seems alot like tuna. I'd never had it before but it seemed well cooked and very meaty. Overall, the food was highly salted (miso/ teriyaki seasoning). The service was the best thing, oh the desert was just as good. More

Very nice location, very interesting food experience (we tried the roasted octopus and the kinchi fried rice), great and impressive dinner!

Great vibe, great energy, amazing food and service that can't be beat. I've been trying to get into Liholiho for years when I'm in town for a quick visit and the wait was worth it, but I'll be pissed the next time I can't get... in. More

What a pleasant surprise. The food was great. And I loved the dessert. The atmosphere was fun. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Excellent food all meant for sharing with wide variety of Asian themed cuisine. New and hip restaurant which is still casual. Make reservations early as they are hard to obtain. Service is good, not great.

After flying in from NY, I was keen for something tasty and fresh, found this place on TA and wanted to check it out. Unpretentious, welcoming, the food was bang on and the cocktails wash down perfectly. This is a great place.

Can't rate the food since we never got a chance to eat anything. We went in, we told that we could eat at the bar since all tables were full. However, they seriously don't know how to handle that kinda simple situation (which almost every... restaurant I have seen does better) and it is a total chaos on who sits where and when (we didn't want to start a yelling competition with another group). The waitress didn't seem to care (maybe because we were only two paying customers against 5, who knows?). We decided to leave with a very bad experiencd from the place which almost ruined our evening. Don't go, if you have not reserved a table. More

1) This is what I'd call a 'funky' Asian/Hawaiian fusion place in a sketchy part of SF. (When we went there, we witnessed the police arresting a drug dealer right on the corner. It was like watching a live cop show.) That's not to say... this is an 'unsafe' area, just keep your eyes open. It's in a section of town called TenderNob (a juncture of NobHill (very posh section of town) and the Tenderloin -- not so nice area of town. 2) First, the name-- the restaurant doesn't have anything to do with a Yacht club and other than a Hawaiian influence in the food-- you'll not feel like it's Hawaiian either. So it's great name, but not that descriptive. Is a totally 'chill' restaurant with a funky sound track to boot. So if you're looking for hoity-toity dress up place this isn't the place for you. People here were ultra casual. 3) The head chef grew up in Hawaii on Oahu and is of Hawaiian - Chinese- Indian heritage - Ravi Kapur is 38 and cooks what he likes to prepare for his family. He's into what's called “The Aloha Spirit , the way people are treated, that’s the most important thing in my restaurant,” is what he says. 4) OK..the FOOD.... Most people on this forum said to order the popcorn -- I think you can skip the popcorn, it's not that interesting. It's buttery and spicy, no big whoop, you can skip it. (see Picture). It isn't bad, but you don't need it. 5) The Poke tuna is to DIE FOR. (See Pic), it's on top of a homemade cracker, highly recommended, comes in a serving size of 2. Good Appetizer. 6) We also ordered the Little Gems salad - it has shaved Corn, fava beans, a very tasty dressing on it, tasted great, easily shareable (See Pic). 7) The Tuna Belly - is a nice portion size and is spiced excellently -- the chef has a way of combining the sweet and the sour and the spicy and the hot together magnificently. Highly recommend this dish. 8) The octopus salad is another winner - (see pic) - Grilled Octopus pieces along with spicy potatoes and greens. Highly recommend. 9) The Opah (sp?) fish this was our biggest course - it tasted exquisite. Hard to describe how it tasted, it's a white fleshy fish and like everything else has unique flavors (see pic).\ 9a) Dessert is not to be missed - see pictures - we ordered the pistachio dessert and the Hawaiian one - I thought both were great, the Pistachio one was better - it had a meringue-like enclosure for the nuts with a amaretto/cherry flavor... I am still thinking about it.. 10) Net/Net be cautious in this part of town, the is a casual place with rocking' music that plays, there is an 'open' kitchen so you can see the chef in action. The place is packed, so make sure you have reservations and if you don't you can hover until people leave with your best chance of getting a table either super early or late. One last thing - service is a 15 out of 10 -- each server knew everything about all dishes. And....don't forget the cocktails - we got the Skipper and it was to die for. More

Liholiho Yacht Club

Customer ratings and reviews.

Lots of delicious, fresh flavors and gracious service. Simple, but well prepared drinks. Would have given 5 stars, however our main dish was not fully cooked and we had to send it back. They were very apologetic and comp’d us an appetizer, dessert and a sake shots — which was more than enough and beyond what other restaurants would do.

We had a great time visiting. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcomed from the moment we walked in. We sat at the bar and our bartender was great. He was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The food is top-notch for sure. From appetizers to the main course it would be difficult to find anything wrong with the meal. The preparation, presentation, and flavor of each dish was beyond what I expected. I highly recommend having dinner here. Great place!

Loved this dinner. We did the chefs "cook for me" option and got to enjoy tons of the menu (and off menu classics). Can't wait to return!

A no-brainer 5-star as everything was delicious, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. Unique menu compared to the places we typically go. Highly recommended. Our favorites were the steamed bun and swordfish katsu (not dense and dry like swordfish unfortunately often is). Shout out to bartender Rob who had great knowledge of the menu. I liked the music and thought it was cool to have family featured on the wall.

The server talked really fast and with the loud music, I had asked him to repeat couple of times. Foods were great! So lucky we had a last minute reservation for 5 today. My elderly mother enjoyed her foods as well. Pics of our orders plus the 3 appz we had. We walked out stuffed & satisfied.

Liholiho yacht club looks like a hawaiian restaurant, but tastes like san francisco.

Those are the flavors I grew up with. We didn't have ketchup in our refrigerator—we had hoisin sauce and oyster sauce.
The worst thing you can do in Hawaii is not have enough food. But Liholiho Yacht Club is as Hawaiian as it is San Franciscan.

Liholiho Yacht Club

Chef Owner Ravi Kapur

liholiho yacht club dress code

Recognized for his heritage driven cooking, Chef Ravi Kapur has been a professional Chef for more than 20 years. Kapur opened the acclaimed Liholiho Yacht Club in January 2015 in San Francisco.

He was born in Hawaii to his Native Hawaiian-Chinese Mother and Father from India. The flavors of his diverse food cultures, together with his upbringing in Hawaii, have cultivated his palate DNA – a treasure he draws from to create his unique and delicious food.

Ravi’s inspiration to cook was sparked while in college studying business communications. He made a complete 180 and began his cook-to-chef journey. He moved to San Francisco in 1998 to attend the California Culinary Academy. After graduating, he ventured to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and worked at The Compound Restaurant and the notable Coyote Café. He returned to San Francisco with a new set of tools and began working in kitchens such as at Redwood Park and Plump Jack. His Chef career began unfolding when he joined Nancy Oakes’ at Boulevard Restaurant. Ravi worked very closely with Chef Oaks, and she quickly became a mentor to him. Within eight years, he progressed from cook to sous chef to chef de cuisine. In 2010 he became the Executive Chef and Oaks partner of Prospect Restaurant, which received 4.5 stars from The San Francisco Chronicle.

In May 2011, Kapur’s life took on new meaning with the birth of his son, Makoa. Ravi resigned from Prospect and was drawn away from the kitchen for the first time. He was compelled to be present and committed to his son. In turn, this led him to a renaissance as he had never experienced. His inspiration was now clear, and by 2012 he began his series of pop-ups, also known as Liholiho Yacht Club. For the first time in his career, he could tap into the soul of his culinary roots – his heritage-driven food. Ravi’s pop-ups were wildly popular, people loved them, and they wanted more!

During this pop-up hiatus, the reality of having his own restaurant solidified. Four years later, in January 2015, Kapur, his wife, April Storm, and partner Jeff Hanak opened their restaurant in The Lower Nob Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. The new brick-and-mortar Liholiho Yacht Club quickly became a destination experience representing the sum of their core values, expectations, and inspirations. Simply put, the offering of friendly service, delicious food created from the best ingredients California has to offer, in an atmosphere that is fun and energetic. Liholiho immediately began receiving high accolades from the press. The San Francisco Chronicle dubbed LYC as redefining California Cuisine. Chef Ravi became one of Food and Wine Magazine’s top Chef’. He was also nominated for Best New Restaurant by The James Beard Foundation.

Although it was decades in the making, Liholiho is a lifelong dream rooted within Chef Ravi’s lineage. Liholiho Yacht Club’s name alone is the playful name used by Ravi’s Uncles on Maui. In the 1980s, The Kealoha Uncles formed a “club” to raise money to fund their hobby of racing Hobie Cats, not yachts. They lived on Liholiho Street, not the marina. The Uncles “Liholiho Yacht Club” was an early version of a pop-up that offered delicious local food and lots of fun. Quoting Uncle George Kealoha, “What could be better than to throw a party that allows you to do what you love!” And this is what Kapur feels they are doing at Liholiho Yacht Club hence the name and why it captures the spirit perfectly.

Chef Ravi and Jeff Hanak continue opening vibrant restaurants in San Francisco, the city they love.
