29ER is a 14 ′ 7 ″ / 4.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Bethwaite Design and built by Ovington Boats Ltd., MacKay Boats Ltd., Performance Sailcraft, Xtreme Sailing Products, and Nautivela starting in 2001.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

COLLEGE ALUMNI

The 29er class alumni has more than its fair share of talented sailors who went on to fantastic schools, were recognized as All Americans collegiate sailors and/or endeavored to launch Olympic campaigns. As your sailors look for inspiration and advice they can reach out to their peers who paved the way.

The 29er Class showcases 40+ annual events nationally with a full calendar of clinics and regattas to support fleet development and an exciting critical mass of local racing. All 29er Class events are open competition. International regattas often with 100-200 entries and 1/3 female teams offer some of the world’s most competitive one design racing for youth sailors representing Team USA abroad.  

WOMEN'S 29er SAILING

The 29er class is a showcase for the development of woman’s competitive sailing. Almost a 1/3 of the international fleet is represented by all woman teams. Berta Puig (Miami, Fla.) and Bella Casaretto (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) took gold for Team USA in the woman’s 29er fleet at ISAF Youth Worlds in 2019. The 29er is the pathway class to the Woman’s Olympic 49er FX.

29er WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 29er Open Worlds is held annually at rotating global venues. Competition is open to all International 29er Class Members. With annually participation well in excess of 150-200 entries, competitors rank into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets for medal rounds. The top 20 sailors earn the right to compete with their finishing place as their sail number between events. Team USA has been well represented on the podium with the best of 29er sailors in the world.

One-design, double-handed, single-trapeze skiff with a fully battened mainsail, self-tacking jib and asymmetric spinnaker. Teams compete as men’s, women’s and mixed pairs. Skiffs are fast and fun. The 29er provides an Olympic pathway to the Men’s 49er and Woman’s 49erFX.

The 29er was designed by Australian skiff legend Julian Bethwaite, with a team of internationally recognized dinghy sailors.

Although the design was originally targeted to youth sailors as a feeder class to the Olympic 49er, the 29er is a "super class" on its own merits. The optimal combined crew weight is considered to be 120 - 145kg's but is by no means limited to that span.

29ers are built to exceedingly strict one design standards, and under strict control of World Sailing. This assures that sailing ability is the key performance criterium.

The boats are rugged, well equipped and fully competitive straight out of the box. Failures are rare, sails are durable, and the expense of running the boat is modest.

The Hull 

Constructed from hi-tech fibreglass-reinforced polyester in a foam sandwich layout, the hull is ultra-lightweight with a self-draining cockpit.

The Rig 

The mast is in three parts - an aluminium bottom and middle section, with a polyester-fiberglass composite tip that gives the ultimate in gust response and acceleration.

Spars are made from CNC machined tubes.

The 29er sails include a fully battened mainsail and self-tacking jib. Both mainsail and jib are made from a mylar transparent laminate. Add on an asymmetric spinnaker and you'll discover the 29er is pure dynamite downwind.

Other design features include a mainsail cuff to increase sail efficiency, a ram vang, safety foot/grab rails and an enclosed transom.

Foils are made in CNC cut aluminium tooling.

Mackay built 29ers

Mackay built 29er hulls, foils and spars now available in New Zealand again.

With the Oceanic fleet sizes growing and new fleets in Asia and other Pacific rim countries, we recommenced production in 2020 using a full set of the latest moulds all made from CNC cut plugs.

How to do a gelcoat repair.

Small gel coat repairs are relatively easy to do. 

What is Gelcoat made up of?

Gelcoat is a polyester product that is cured by using a catalyst called MEKP. (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide)

MEKP is a dangerous substance and should be treated as such when using, being very careful not to get any on your skin or in your eyes.

How can I get the catalyst - MERK?

We cannot ship MEKP so you will always need to buy it separately from your local marine store or fibreglass manufacturer.

How much MERK do I need?

The amount of Catalyst varies depending on the conditions you are using it in, but around 2%-3% will always work.

It is best to use a small syringe or dropper to get the required catalyst rate.

If you have mixed 100gm of gelcoat, then you are aiming for 2ml of catalyst.

What are the Gelcoat colours?

Gelcoats colours are not always a 100% perfect match.

Colour will vary depending on the depth of the repair and the batch.

Blue = is supplier by Nuplex who have their own code which is not an international code

Does Mackay Boats supply gelcoat?

We supply a small tin (of each relevant colour) with each new boat.

Order additional gelcoat from our store, although it cannot be shipped by courier.

How do I do gelcoat repairs?

Doing gelcoat repairs is an art that improves with experience.

Making sure the surface is prepared well and keyed up is critical.

Overfill and then sanding back is a slow and time-consuming process.

Be very careful not to scratch the boat around the repair.

You shouldn’t sand the original surface around the repair with any paper coarser than 600grit.

Mask around the repair to protect the boat.

You can initially use a file or 150g to take the high parts off the filling, but don't use the coarse paper for too long or you will end up with scratches in the finished repair.

Once you have it fair with 600g, you can work your way through the sandpaper grades until you finish with 1500grit before cutting and polishing.

We would typically use 600g, then 800g or 1000g, then 1200g, then finally 1500g.

Revolution 29

Pause before you dismiss this ‘bathtub’ of a boat – she has some pedigree. back in 2011, her designer david raison, won the mini transat in teamwork , which featured the same scow-like bow..

Buoyed by this success, Raison launched the rather spartan Revolution 22 as a cruising yacht and the world looked away. The 29, however, is a tempting prospect, as the curved   bow gives her plenty of volume while her aluminium construction and lifting keel make her both sturdy and versatile. The fit-out of the interior is also a real step up on the 22 and the general impression is of a roomy, practical yacht – the only drawback being the rather open-plan nature of the saloon/forward berth.

The Dehler 29 offers a double cabin in the bow and a stern cabin on the port side. At the back of the starboard side is where a large storage space is situated.

Whatever you decide to take on board, you will have plenty of space in the generous drawers, overhead cabinets, wardrobes and storage boxes.

The engine: Always accessible

29er European Championships 2023 at the Royal Swedish Yacht Club - Overall

The World Championships is the pinnacle event for the class each year where competitors come together to race at the highest level, attracting a large fleet from across the globe. Recent Worlds have taken place in Long Beach USA, Hong Kong, Gydnia Poland, Valencia and El Balis, Spain and Weymouth, UK. The 2022 Worlds attracted attracted record numbers with 245 entries and 2023 Championships were held in Weymouth, England. In 2024, The World Championships for 2024 will be hosted by Aarhus, Denmark.

The Europeans is an annual continental championship and in 2023 was contested on the waters of The Royal Swedish Yacht Club. Sweden. Competitor numbers at this event is often similar to the Worlds providing another top end, well attended racing opportunity in the calendar. In 2024, the European Championships will be hosted by Gdynia, Poland.

The South American Championships typically take place around mid April and attracts sailors from the home country hosts of Brasil, Argentina, Chilli and Uruquay.

The Asian National Classes have established a Continental Championships in this region to encourage and provide opportunities for World Class racing within the region.

The Eurocup series offers sailors fantastic racing opportunities across Europe during the course of the year. Usually, around 12 events beginning in Spain and ending with a spectacular Final in Riva del Garda, it often attracts sailors from further afield. 5 regattas count with Garda being non-discardable. The 2024 series is shaping up nicely and will culminate in the Finals, Lake Garda, Italy in October. We hope to see many of you on the start line!

Amels 80 For Sale

The Amels 80, measuring 80m or 261ft, has six decks. She is a big ship, offering plenty of features, with a truly impressive volume of 2,175GT. Designed by the legendary Espen Øino, a designer and naval architect who knows the value of the water like no other. The yacht comes with the largest sundeck in her class, with an oversized on deck spa, easily accessible thanks to an all deck elevator. The beach club opens on each side, bathed in natural light via the glass-bottom pool while featuring a gym, hammam and sauna. The owner’s deck comes with a forward-facing stateroom with a jacuzzi. The bow offers a multi-purpose area, that can carry a large helicopter or be fitted with a basketball court.

The first Amels 80 makes a splash

The first Amels 80 is afloat! Measuring 80m (261ft) in length, the new hull and superstructure was seen outside of her hull build shed for the first time since the concept was introduced in March 2022. Preparations are now underway for her journey to Damen Yachting's main shipyard in The Netherlands for final outfitting.

This next generation Amels Limited Editions, and the first of the most recent design to be introduced, is on track to be delivered to her new Owner in 2025 as per Damen Yachting’s promise of fast delivery – a trait proven through the legacy of the fifty-plus Amels Limited Editions delivered to date. Since selling the yacht exactly one year ago, the team at Burgess has remained involved in the build process to represent the Owner.

Damen Yachting's Project Manager, Romke van der Linde explains what this milestone means for the yard and all those involved in the project.  'This Owner is positive, driven and passionate and it is great that we can realise this dream for him and be at the forefront of shipbuilding. Today is a huge milestone in the history of our Amels Limited Editions and I can't wait for her to arrive in Vlissingen and watch her evolve into the very special superyacht she is set to become.'

Damen Yachting continues to evolve its products and, for many years, has perfected the Limited Editions superyachts and their various sizes and designs. With the classic Limited Edition designs still a firm favourite of many, the range increased in 2019 with the Amels 60 and now the largest Limited Editions yacht to date, the Amels 80.

In keeping with the Amels DNA, designer Espen Oeino created a holistic and modern exterior design. A key factor of the next-generation design is that it features sustainable materials and innovative hybrid technology. 

'The Amels 80 is a design that will not age. Her modern strong lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she is delivered. She is a big ship, full of features, with an impressive interior volume. She is everything and more that you will expect from an 80-metre yacht. There is a sense of scale, and nothing is wasted,' explains Espen Oeino.

Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design is the design studio behind the first Amels 80’s custom interiors, the shape of which will start coming together once the yacht arrives in Vlissingen, The Netherlands, from her build facility in Galati, Romania, for outfitting later this year. In line with the Amels Limited Editions concept, the Amels 80’s Owner has utilised the semi-custom platform and opted for an interior that hosts a personalised layer of loose furniture and decorative elements. 

'It’s a very neutral and natural palette,' explains Paul Costerus, Lead Designer at Sinot.  'Materials are treated so that the natural characteristics remain as pure as possible. The style is distinctive and allows the Owner to customise and add their personal style.'

Other features on board the Amels 80 include an impressive 200sqm (2,153sqft) sun deck, a waterside beach club which opens on three sides with a nearby wellness and spa, a dedicated owner’s deck and huge framed windows for panoramic views on the main deck. The yacht also houses a multitude of watercraft and toys and a helicopter landing area.

A Vision Takes Shape: The Amels 80 Yacht's Anticipated Arrival at Damen Yachting Shipyard

Today marked a significant moment as the first Amels 80 superyacht made its grand entrance into the Netherlands, signaling the beginning of its outfitting phase. The Damen Yachting shipyard in Vlissingen will serve as the crafting grounds for this magnificent motor yacht until its completion in 2025.

Spanning an impressive 80m (261ft), this pioneering Amels 80 superyacht is the latest addition to the renowned Amels Limited Editions collection. The yacht's exterior, a masterpiece by the acclaimed designer Espen Øino, embodies the signature elegance and modern flair characteristic of Amels yachts.

Damen Yachting's Project Manager, Romke van der Linde, expressed his pride in the shipyard's legacy of over a century of innovation, highlighting the hybrid technology of the Amels 80 as a prime example of their forward-thinking craftsmanship. The positive response from the hybrid system already in use on the Amels 60 yachts like ENTOURAGE underscores the shipyard's commitment to excellence.

The yacht owner has embraced the opportunity for customization, commissioning the esteemed Dutch studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design to craft a bespoke interior. Jan van Hogerwou, Commercial Executive for North America at Damen Yachting, noted that the ability to personalize the interior is a significant aspect of the Amels Limited Editions yachts. The rendered previews promise a truly stunning interpretation of the Amels 80 interior, eagerly anticipated for 2025.

Once completed, the yacht will feature an exclusive owner's deck, an expansive 200sqm (2,153 sqft) sun deck, and a generous 2,175 GT volume accommodating a variety of leisure amenities. Guests can look forward to a waterside beach club with threefold access, a tranquil wellness and spa area, and a designated helicopter landing space.

The initial construction of the Amels 80's hull and superstructure was completed in Galati, Romania, and unveiled on September 27th, 2023, before being transported to the Netherlands for the next steps in its build. The sale of the yacht a year prior has kept the team at Burgess closely engaged as the Owner's Representative throughout the development process.

Amels has entered a new superyacht category with the official announcement of its new 80-meter (263-ft) yacht.  The Dutch yacht builder made the launch virtually during an online presentation from the Amsterdam Theater. The company said it was viewed by “tens of thousands.”

The on-camera panel included Rose Damen , managing director of Damen Yacht, Espen Øino, who designed the exterior, and Paul Costerus, interior designer at Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design. This all-star cast, comprised of the respected shipyard and two of the industry’s hottest design brands, also included the new 80-meter in a scaled-down, 26-foot model on center stage.

The yacht itself, which is currently under build, will be enormous, with six decks and a total interior volume of 2,175 gross tons. Aware that Amels has plenty of competitors in the 80-meter segment, the design has noteworthy features like the largest in-class, top-deck square footage, including a Jacuzzi and both access via an elevator and internal stairs as well as a spacious beach club that includes a spa, glass-bottom swimming pool and lounge area with openings on three sides.

With its vertical bow, long foredeck and tiered superstructure, Øino’s exterior is aiming for a timeless, classic look. Her modern lines will look as good in 10 years as the day she departs the yard,” he said in a statement, adding that the yacht has a “sense of scale,” but no space is wasted. “She is everything and more that you will expect from an 80-meter yacht,” he said.

The interior design has a neutral palette, with stained oak and walnut veneers, stones and leathers. The yard has kept these materials as natural-looking as possible. Loose furniture and other residential touches give the interior an open, homey feel.

“Materials are treated in such a way that the natural characteristics remain as pure as possible,” said Sinot in a statement. “Splashes of color and special finishings made from bronzed metals and glass are infused into the design throughout to create the characteristics necessary to make the yacht stand out from the crowd.”

As part of Amels’s Limited-Edition approach, it will be built on the same hull and superstructure, but owners can heavily customize the interior as well as custom tenders and toys.

The 80 will have an owner’s deck with its own lounge, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, jacuzzi just forward of the main stateroom, and sheltered area for dining on the aft deck.

The six other cabins on the main deck all offer exceptional views, with a flexible VIP arrangement. It will accommodate a total of 14, including the owners.

The new Amels will also have hybrid electric/diesel propulsion, as well as solar panels and recycling capabilities. The tender garage forward can accommodate a 37-foot tender, with space for other tenders and toys like jet skis. The open foredeck serves as a touch-and-go helipad.

“Every new yacht challenges us to push the limits of our absolute mastery,” said Adriaan Roose, Amels’s product manager. “Decades of Amels pedigree, experience and knowhow have fed the creation of the Amels 80.” The first yacht will be delivered in 2025.

Damen yachting announces the sale of the third amels 80, designed by espen øino, with delivery expected in 2026….

Damen Yachting announces  the sale of the third unit in its 80-metre Amels Limited Editions series, just three months after the second hull was sold. The Amels 80 is the largest vessel in the Limited Editions range that was announced in March 2022, with the first hull sold six months later.

The latest unit, initially known as Project Zurich, is set to be delivered in 2026. The calculated volume is believed to be around 2100GT and will house 14 guests and 20+ crew. While the interiors are confidential, the Exterior design once again comes from Espen Øino .

Jan van Hogerwou, Commercial Executive of Damen Yachting, who worked with the client throughout the sales process., comments: “It is almost a year to the date since we introduced the Amels 80. The fact that we have seen not only positive reactions to the design since the launch but also a strong sales foothold within the first 12 months is a true testament to her modern design and trusted build pedigree. I am very much looking forward to embarking on the build journey with this experienced client.”
