Nobiskrug Delivers ‘Artefact,’ the 262-Foot Hybrid Superyacht That Can Run in Total Silence

Nobiskrug superyacht artefact hybrid environmentally friendly

Hot off its successful Baltic Sea trials, Germany-based Nobiskrug shipyard delivered the much-anticipated yacht last week. Aiming for near-silent operation and top-notch stability and seaworthiness, the steel-and-composite yacht sports 248 feet of solar panels mounted on its sundeck. Along with its huge battery storage system, Artefact operates silently for short bursts without using combustion engines. Artefact ‘s DC-bus diesel-electric variable-speed Azipod-propulsion and dynamic-positioning systems are worth mentioning as well. They make dropping anchor onto a fragile seafloor unnecessary while ensuring efficiency and lower emissions. Noise and vibration are minimized and performance maximized by custom six-blade propellers. The technical systems uses recycled wastewater thanks to the yacht’s filtering system. With all of these environment-focused systems in place, Artefact meets the International Maritime Organization Tier III emissions regulations, and is one of the first superyachts to do so.

Besides its green-friendly attributes, Artefact also boasts 7,965 square feet of curved glasswork, which weighs close to 60 tons—an impressive feat when considering that most yacht designers strive to save weight wherever possible. The lightweight composite superstructure makes using all that glass possible. And can you imagine the views? And the natural light?

“This is the owner’s first yacht, but it is certainly not his first large custom project,” says Marshall. “He brought an uncommon mindset for creating something original and unique.”

For example, instead of using the aft deck for an outdoor lounge and the main salon, the master suite occupies this space. Most main-deck master staterooms reside as far forward as the superstructure allows.

“The core mandate for Artefact was to create something that is not ‘just a regular boat,'” says Marshall.  “This philosophy sounds simple at first reading, but defines the DNA for Artefact to be absolutely exceptional in ways not typically considered even on the largest custom yachts .”

And while privacy is of utmost importance, according to Marshall, so is enjoying the surroundings. The large and ample windows are a great example. “You don’t just look out, you look forward, aft, up and down,” says Marshall. “And yet, you can’t see from one space into another.”

“Balconies are featured throughout and are positioned for privacy and wind protection,” explains Marshall. “Grand public spaces are balanced with intimate private ones.”

The UK’s Reymond Langton Design took care of the yacht’s interiors, which include eight staterooms and 12 crew cabins. Even though design details of the Artefact’s interiors have not been revealed, Marshall shares that its “layout and styling are exotic but serve to create an unmatched guest experience.”

All of the social spaces are located in low-acceleration zones for more serene cruising. This superyacht’s aim is to provide smooth-riding comfort, and the vessel’s hull has been tested extensively to make sure this is the case.

“Onboard comfort at sea defined Artefact ’s size (along with her compliment of tenders),” says Marshall. “A desire to remove noise and vibration at an unmatched level brought her hybrid propulsion system with giant battery banks and electric pod drives. All of this adds up to a stunning yacht that is a remarkable technical achievement for a very special owner with a tremendous vision.”

Artefact ’s top speed and range have not yet been released.

By Katia Damborsky   8 July 2019

The 80m/262ft superyacht ARTEFACT was launched by Nobiskrug in Northern Germany this morning, and is set to make her world debut at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show .

Previously known as ‘Project 760’, ARTEFACT hit the waters for the first time this morning.

The launch has been hotly anticipated, following the first stages of development in November 2016 and two and a half years of research and development by Nobiskrug prior to that.

The motor yacht is set to be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show 2019, where she will be making her world premiere.

The yacht’s distinctive exterior is the work of Gregory C. Marshall, while Reymond Langton Design has headed up the interior.

This innovative look reflects a visionary owner, who wanted to ensure his yacht met specific criteria. These include environmental responsibility, technological innovation and luxury living for those on board.

Upon delivery, the 2,990 GT Artefact is set to become the highest-volume 80-metre superyacht on the water.

The owner wanted to ensure his yacht met specific criteria, including environmental responsibility and technological innovation.

As can be seen in photos, model images and renderings, Artefact boasts an excess of state-of-the-art glazing. Around 58 tonnes of glass has been used in total, and she is believed to have the highest ratio of glass to LOA for any yacht of her size class.

“We’re not afraid of pushing the envelope, but perhaps the biggest challenge with Artefact was that she’s a very high volume yacht with a fibreglass superstructure and tremendous amount of heavy glass,” Nobiskrug’s Managing Director, Holger Kahl, has said in the past.

To achieve the cutting-edge exterior look that the owner desired, the yacht’s superstructure is made out of GRP instead of the more traditional aluminum. The choice was made to offset the added weight from the glass.

ARTEFACT has a sophisticated hybrid propulsion system which makes her up to 30% more efficient in the water when compared to conventional diesel propulsion yachts in her size range.

She was built to be compliant with the latest IMO Tier III NOx regulations, with a propulsion system which relies on generators and Lithium-ion batteries.

The hybrid system reduces sound, vibration, fuel burn and emissions and offers dynamic positioning capabilities. Dynamic positioning means a yacht can hold its position without dropping anchor, thus protecting the sea floor.

In addition, ARTEFACT is provided with 6kW of auxiliary power, thanks to 23 square metres of solar panels on the sundeck.

“The set up allows us to run the yacht in a state of optimal efficiency and minimal wear and tear on the generators,” explains the yacht’s captain and owner’s representative, Aaron T. Clark. “Basically, we’re always conserving or redirecting energy, that’s the real advantage.”

While little is known about the interiors of the yacht, the layout departs from convention in pursuit of maximum stability and silent operations. The master stateroom is situated aft rather than forward, and all guest entertainment areas are located in low acceleration zones.

Captain Aaron T Clark added: “ARTEFACT is a unique vessel that marries cutting-edge engineering and striking architectural design to embody a tribute to the nuances of human experience which are often overlooked or ignored.

“Many traditional aspects of a superyacht GA’s have been challenged and reimagined in this design to create an unprecedented experience while minimizing the impact on fragile marine ecosystems.”

It is not known whether luxury yacht ARTEFACT will be available for private yacht charters .

ARTEFACT // Nobiskrug // 80m

Nobiskrug built the new 80m m/y artefact.

ARTEFACT is designed by Gregory C. Marshall (exterior) and Reymond Langton (interior). The yard talks about new standards with the use of glass on superyachts.

The owner of the yacht had a focus to maximize the environmental friendliness with hybrid propulsion that meets TIER III regulations that include ABB Azipods to use a dynamic positioning system instead of the classic anchor in areas with sensitive grounds. Moreover, the motor yacht has solar panels to recharge large battery banks and wastewater can be recycled.

Nobiskrug launches 80m 'Artefact'

The new 2,990gt superyacht is highly technical and environmentally focused as per the owner's request….

Image for article Nobiskrug launches 80m 'Artefact'

When it comes to distinctive superyacht design, German shipyard Nobiskrug is certainly no stranger. In 2017, the design principles of a ‘superyacht’ was put to the test by the shipyard as 142.8m S/Y A entered the public eye, which still to this day receives a constant stream of media attention.

Now, together with Gregory C. Marshall, it would seem that the shipyard has gone out on another design-related limb, as 80m M/Y Artefact has been revealed for the first time, showcasing a challenging and unique exterior which is representative of the yacht’s highly technical and environmentally conscious feats that were high up on the owner’s priority list.

" Artefact is a unique vessel that marries cutting-edge engineering and striking architectural design to embody a tribute to the nuances of human experience that are often overlooked or ignored.” Said the yacht’s captain and owner’s representative, Aaron T. Clark during the 2018 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show, when the renderings were first revealed.

"Artefact is a unique vessel that marries cutting-edge engineering and striking architectural design to embody a tribute to the nuances of human experience that are often overlooked or ignored." - Captain Aaron T. Clark of M/Y Artefact

"Many traditional aspects of superyacht GA’s have been challenged and reimagined in this design to create an unprecedented experience while minimizing impact on fragile marine ecosystems,” explained Clark.

Unquestionably, the 2,990gt yacht’s exterior features a host of technically challenging elements, which Nobiskrug had to overcome, including the curved and expressive glasswork, weighing approximately 60 tons. The central glass defining feature of the yacht actually comprises of 740 square metres floor to ceiling windows.

"The composite superstructure and the extensive use of custom large and curved glass panels throughout is monumental, ensuring that the visual experience from the interior is uncompromised with minimal mullions to obstruct the panorama,” said Holger Kahl, managing director of Nobiskrug. “is a perfect marriage of art and science through innovative architectural design and advanced engineering.”

Artefact boosts an extensive collection of technologies which adhere to IMO Tier III emissions regulation.

Artefact boosts an extensive collection of technologies which adhere to IMO Tier III emissions regulation. These include the use of solar panels and a large battery storage system that allows the yacht to operate for a period of time with no internal combustion engines. Furthermore, silent operation and maximum stability has also been a driving force behind the concept of the vessel.

A DC-bus diesel-electric Azipod propulsion system developed by ABB combined with dynamic positioning that can hold position without dropping anchor. Together, the combination of environmentally focused technologies on board, Nobiskrug appear to have successfully adhere to the owner’s brief in both design and performance.

Although the yacht’s interiors are yet to be revealed, Nobiskrug has clarified that the unique custom interior, designed by Reymond Langton is now been finalised and installed.

Now having delivered a total of 10 superyachts over 30m since it began building superyachts in 2000, Nobiskrug has two further superyachts under construction in addition to M/Y Artefact.

The new 80m superyacht will now finalise its commissioning process, which includes harbour acceptance tests and sea trials prior to her delivery this summer.
