Five Waves was built for speed and this high-performance 36m luxury cruiser is the only yacht of her kind available for charter in the Bahamas. Five Waves was built by Italian shipyard AB Yachts in 2010, a yard well known for its sleek, contemporary designs. High-tech construction methods, high horsepower engine installations and water jet drives, result in breath-taking boats of which Five Waves is a prime example.

Five Waves’ shallow draft and top speed of 40 knots, makes her the ideal boat for island hopping around the Bahamas. Her exterior lines, by Marco Arnaboldi, give a low, stylish and sporty profile that always attracts attention.

Fives Waves’ interior furnishings include many custom pieces of furniture and the finish is executed to an exceptionally high standard. Designed by Guido de Groot, the décor is modern, sophisticated and uncluttered, and utilises a largely neutral palette with colourful, nautical touches. State-of-the-art lighting provides ambience both inside and on deck.

Five Waves’ versatile interior layout allows for 10 guests to be accommodated in five cabins, comprising a full-beam master suite, a VIP cabin and three twin cabins, all en suite.

The exterior spaces aboard Five Waves are given over to relaxed seating areas and banks of large cushioned sun pads. Her aft dining table, on-deck Jacuzzi and outdoor bar facilities offer great social spaces and make this yacht particularly well suited to couples or families with older Children.

Five Waves has a compliment of six crew to take care of you whilst on board, and they are fully versed in the use of Five Waves’ excellent entertainment facilities and leisure equipment.

Five Waves has a generous swim platform and enviable toy collection, including two Yamaha Wave Runners and two Seabobs, as well as stand up paddle boards, wake boards and the odd inflatable unicorn for good measure.

Photos, video show collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge after cargo ship collision

5 waves yacht

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland collapsed Tuesday into the Patapsco River after it was struck by a large cargo ship.

The bridge's collapse has prompted huge emergency response, with the Baltimore City Fire Department describing the collapse as a mass-casualty incident, and rescue crews searching for seven people in the river. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency.

Baltimore  Mayor Brendon Scott  said on X that he was aware of the incident and was en route to the bridge. "Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway," he said.

The 1.6 mile, 4-lane bridge named for the author of the "Star-Spangled Banner," was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the United States and third in the world.

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN staff

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

 From CNN's Sarah Engel

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

People look at the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge while visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.

Three people found dead, two survive after fishing boat capsizes near Port Lincoln

Two police cars and one ambulance at the end of the road next to the sea

Three people are now confirmed to have died after a fishing boat with five people onboard capsized near Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula late on Monday afternoon.

At 6:30am on Tuesday, police found a body in the water, then another at 9am, before a third was discovered at 2:15pm.

The boat overturned overnight around Spilsby Island, 45 kilometres east of Port Lincoln in the Spencer Gulf.

Two survivors — a 44-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy, both from the Adelaide suburb of Torrens Park — were found on a reef and winched to safety in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A picture of an island

The surviving pair were taken to hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries including hypothermia.

Police were told by the pair that the boat was capsized by a wave at about 4pm on Monday.

Family raised the alarm at about 8:30pm on Monday when the boat failed to return from a fishing trip that morning.

Superintendent Paul Bahr said investigations into the circumstances that surrounded the incident would continue.

A male police office in uniform in an office

"They were fishing near Spilsby Island when they were swamped by a wave, overturning the boat and throwing everyone into the water," Superintendent Bahr said.

"We're still talking to the survivors, so we're still trying to put that picture together in terms of how they ended up on the reef away from the boat."

He said a police helicopter located the upturned fishing boat at about 2am on Tuesday.

"The boat itself has also been recovered and it's making its way back to Port Lincoln and that will be offloaded later today," he said.

"It will be subject to further forensic examination and also any examination the coroner may require."

Aerial and ocean searches underway on Tuesday have now concluded.

In a statement, SAPOL said it will prepare a report for the coroner.

Carolina Panthers v New Orleans Saints

With the first wave of free agency over, teams will now look to fill the roster holes with some of those hidden gems and bargain players that could make a difference. The Cowboys are usually players at this stage when it comes to getting bargain basement players and using them to fill voids to cover for the draft. If they do decide to hold up at this stage and wait until after the draft, there are some players below that could still be available for the team to budget buy and fill out the roster cheaply.

These names all come with questions, whether due to injury concerns or production issues, but when looking for low cost options it’s always a gamble. Here are five of those gambles that come at a reduced price, but if they strike could be a huge booster for the Cowboys this year.

Estimated contract values below are taken either from the Pro Football Focus free agent guide or the Over the Cap website .

WR Michael Thomas, New Orleans Estimated value - $4.5m APY Age - 31 When Michael Thomas first broke onto the scene he set the standard at wide receiver almost immediately. He was a reliable catcher of the ball and technician as a route runner. The one place at wide receiver that’s missing in Dallas is a true X-receiver, especially now that Michael Gallup has gone. Sure, there are questions relating to Thomas’ durability having not played a full season since 2019, and his medical record is quite a read. Even last season he only played up to Week 10 before being shut down due to an MCL injury.

Thomas has clearly lost some of that speed and athleticism due to the injuries, but he was never a guy that won that way, he won with smooth acceleration, sharp breaks and incredible route running. If the Cowboys can get over the low floor Thomas has with the medicals, the ceiling is actually high for him on an offense that is need of the services he can provide. The last time he played a full season, Thomas went for 1,795 yards and nine touchdowns.

New Orleans Saints v Minnesota Vikings

OT Andrus Peat, New Orleans Estimated value - $2.2m APY Age - 30 Consistency and health has been the biggest problem for Peat the last few years. He last played a full season in 2020 but has always come back to play as one of the starting offensive linemen for the Saints. One of the issues that Peat had while at New Orleans that contributed to being inconsistent was him moving all around the line where the team needed him. This shows huge versatility which Dallas could tap into.

Last season, Peat played primarily at left tackle but in the nine years serving at New Orleans he’s also played extensively at left guard and right tackle. For the price Peat is estimated at, and with this level of experience and versatility, he could serve as a great swing tackle where the most questions derive on the offensive line in Dallas. Still not sold? Last year on 476 passing set, Peat allowed only two sacks.

LB Isaiah Simmons, New York Giants Estimated Value - $3.7m APY Age - 25 It looks unlikely Simmons returns to the Giants given the new defensive coordinator and the style of pass rush they will look to install this year. Last year, Wink Martindale was a coordinator that loved to scheme pressure with numbers and go blitz crazy. Given Simmons style of defending and lean size meant he was left as the odd-man out. The Giants never really ever figured out from there what to do with Simmons and that has left him impatient and wanting to find a team that will utilize him best and get the most out of him.

Simmons is an insane athlete the Cowboys could really use. His 40-yard time at the combine was 4.39s which was the fastest at his position and his 10-yard split of 1.55s is also one of the fastest. But it didn’t end there. His vertical and broad jump were both elite and he ended with a RAS (relative athletic score) of 9.97, practically perfect.

Simmons has all the hallmarks of a “late bloomer”. Linking up with guys like Eric Kendricks and Damone Clark in sub-packages or filling the void left by Jayron Kearse, as well as being a helpful piece on special teams makes him a cheap option to help fill a position in need of bodies.

Philadelphia Eagles v New York Giants

OT Donovan Smith, Kansas City Estimated Value - $1.7m APY Age - 30 Penalties are Smith’s worst enemy. Last year he recorded nine penalties and that was one of his better years. In the last four years, Smith has been flagged 40 times but as backup or swing tackle he has all the skills required. He’s a very functional pass protector who allowed only two sacks last season on 506 pass sets and in 2022 he allowed only one sack. The run blocking needs some work to break some bad habits like lunging, but if they can get him cheap he can help cover the tackle position in times of need.

CB Rock Ya-Sin, Baltimore Estimated Value - $2m APY Age - 27 Stephon Gilmore looks to be heading out, so Dallas needs to get a corner to cover the loss, especially given they still have no idea what type of Trevon Diggs they are getting back post-ACL recovery. Rock Ya-Sin had a very low workload last year which means his price tag this year is going to be low. He allowed a completion rate of only 55% last year and that’s a statistic that has stayed pretty constant in his career. He’s not going to get many interceptions, but when Dallas has two ball-hawks that have led the league in interceptions, turnovers aren’t the high priority when looking for an extra defensive back. Being functional in coverage and a solid tackler is what the team needs and that’s what Ya-Sin can provide, at a very cheap price.

What Can A Total Solar Eclipse Teach Us About Our Universe?

The total solar eclipse on April 8 will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness a truly awesome cosmological marvel. You don’t need a scientific background to appreciate its stunning visual beauty, but astronomers and astrophysicists at The University of Texas at Austin have used these rare phenomena to help answer fundamental questions about our universe.

1919-total-solar-eclipse-ESO

In 1919 two British scientists conducted an experiment intended to verify Albert Einstein’s controversial theory of general relativity. This physical theory, that had been published four years prior, proposed the universe is four-dimensional and that massive objects like the sun actually warp the very fabric of spacetime. According to general relativity, this warped spacetime is what we feel as gravity.

Of course, Einstein’s theory was purely theoretical. So another physicist, Arthur Stanley Eddington, believed observing a total solar eclipse might support the validity of Einstein’s radical thesis. Since Einstein had predicted that gravity would bend the path of light near massive objects like the sun, curving spacetime itself, Eddington realized that during a total solar eclipse, the moon blocks the sun’s light, allowing stars near the sun to be visible. By photographing the positions of stars near the sun during the 1919 total solar eclipse, Eddington’s experiment proved to be a landmark result, helping establish general relativity as the prevailing theory of gravity over Sir Isaac Newton’s previous model.

Disprove Me Right!

Science is as much about disproving as it is proving hypotheses. Always looking for that fatal flaw in Einstein’s theory, several amateur and professional scientists sought to reproduce Eddington’s results in the coming decades. In fact, the last experiment conducted using photography was performed by a team from the U.S. Naval Observatory, Princeton University and UT Austin.

“I was actually on that team,” said Richard Matzner , professor of physics at UT’s College of Natural Sciences. “In 1973, myself and the rest of the group traveled to an area in Mauritania, Africa. There we witnessed a total solar eclipse that lasted for six minutes and 10 seconds, a very long time for an eclipse.”

Using improved visual photographic technology than what Eddington would’ve had at his disposal in 1919, Matzner and his colleagues found reasonable proof to corroborate Einstein’s theory once more.

Riding The Gravitational Wave

At UT Austin’s Center for Gravitational Physics , researchers are expanding on the pioneering work of Eddington and his team by helping toR explore one of the other exciting predictions of  Einstein’s theory of general relativity that observers were unable to verify for an entire century, namely, the existence of gravitational waves.

Simply put, these ripples in spacetime – caused after massive space events, such as two black holes colliding – are the messengers of gravitational information. In the same way electromagnetic radiation (light) provides us with information from the sun, we also get gravitational wave information from objects.

However, it took a long time for gravitational waves to be welcome at the spacetime party. “Gravitational waves were one of Einstein’s predictions that even he was uncomfortable with for a while,” said Deirdre Shoemaker , Director of the Center for Gravitational Physics.

Shoemaker is nonchalant when discussing gravitational waves. However, just a decade prior, they still hadn’t been directly confirmed as real.

It wasn’t until 2015, a century after Einstein even posed the hypothesis, that scientists would successfully find the requisite evidence. And the UT Austin theoretical physicist was part of the international team that confirmed their existence.

“The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO project, (of which I am a member) is a large scientific collaboration involving many researchers across different universities and countries,” Shoemaker said. “In 2015, the LIGO’s detections were the first direct observations of gravitational waves.”

(In fact, Shoemaker isn’t the only UT Austin connection to what some described as “the biggest scientific discovery of our time.” The director of LIGO at the time they found the first-ever detection of gravitational waves, David Reitze , is an alumnus who started his career as a Ph.D. candidate at UT Austin.)

There are two LIGO observatories located in the United States – one in Washington and another in Louisiana. Each uses lasers and mirrors arranged in an “L” shape to precisely measure the distance between the mirrors.

Gravitational waves passing through the observatories cause tiny changes in the distances between the mirrors. By measuring any differences in the distances using the lasers, LIGO can detect these gravitational waves. This allows scientists to study cataclysmic events in the universe like black hole and neutron star collisions.

Black Hole Sun

Since total solar eclipses can only be seen about every 400 years from any one place on the surface of the Earth, Shoemaker studies gravitational waves by observing the more dependable black hole – also large enough to warp spacetime.

Choosing the empty nothingness of a black hole over the sun doesn’t appear to have been a compromise for the NSF Career award winner and fellow of the American Physical Society.

“Black holes are beautiful because they don’t contain any messy matter,” she said. “They’re just curved space time.”

And, since they can form in pairs, and even binary pairs that eventually merge into one bigger black hole, they are excellent sources of gravitational waves.

“Black holes are our strongest source,” said Shoemaker. “We see them with the detector all the time. We’ve observed almost 90 individual gravitational waves coming from black holes since 2015.”

Texas Sunsets Meet Their Match

Of course, one doesn’t need to retain any of the above information to enjoy the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. It will be just as spectacular to watch for the non expert as it will be for the most zealous of gravitational physicists.

But as Arthur S Eddington demonstrated over a century ago, the eclipse on April 8 is an opportunity for those now carrying the gravitational torch to find answers to other questions about our universe. You just have to know what to look for.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched missiles against Kyiv for the third time in five days and also targeted other regions Monday as Moscow escalated its aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities while the front line in the war remains largely stationary.

Nine people were injured in the morning strike on the Ukrainian capital, the Ukraine Rescue Service said. The Pecherskyi district was the hardest hit. Missile debris damaged homes in two districts and a local college gym in another district, Ukraine’s National Police said.

Russia fired two ballistic missiles at Kyiv from occupied Crimea in the daylight attack, but both were intercepted above the city, said Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.

Later in the day, Ukrainian news outlets reported at least two explosions in the southern city of Odesa as Russian missile strikes also targeted several other regions. There was no immediate word on injuries or damage there.

On Thursday, Russia attacked Kyiv for the first time in six weeks, firing more than two dozen missiles before dawn. On Friday, Russia unleashed a massive attack against Ukraine’s energy sector , calling the assault retaliation for recent strikes on Russian soil.

Days of intense Ukrainian shelling of the Russian border region of Belgorod led Russia to announce plans to evacuate about 9,000 children .

The bombardment of Kyiv also came three days after a concert hall attack in Russia killed more than 130 people. Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to tie the attack to Ukraine , even though an affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

Putin could use the Moscow attack to shore up support for the war and as a pretext to escalate attacks on Ukraine, analysts said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for Western partners to provide more air defense systems to protect against the unrelenting attacks.

“We never tire of repeating that Ukraine needs more air defense,” he said. “This is security for our cities and saves human lives.”

David and Victoria Beckham cuddle up before boarding lavish $20 million yacht in Miami

David and Victoria Beckham like big boats and they cannot lie.

The soccer player, 48, and the Spice Girls member, 49, traded in their $6.5 million yacht for another one — a ship valued at $20 million.

The lovebirds and their kids, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 12,  were spotted riding on a charter boat to get on their new yacht in Miami on Wednesday.

The fam sported casual looks, with the Beckham patriarch and matriarch both rocking hats and T-shirts.

Their latest yacht is named “Seven” — a reference to Harper’s middle name — and is a  Riva 130 Bellissima boat .

The structure measures 40 meters and 130 feet, and was built in Italy.

The vessel holds five rooms and 10 guests can comfortably fit, with a beach club, Wi-Fi and air conditioning also put on board. According to the Mirror , the lavish yacht boasts a $20 million price tag.

The new luxurious boat was bought by the British footballer in 2022 after staying with longtime friends Elton John and his husband, David Furnish.

An insider told  the Sun  at the time: “David had a look around some yachts in the summer, and decided to treat himself. He helped design the boat himself, and has been incredibly hands-on with everything.”

“It’s not an oligarch-style super-yacht, but it’s still pretty plush by anyone’s standards. He was inspired after holidaying with Elton and David on their boat — and loves life on the water,” the source added.

“There will be an area for the kids to snorkel, and the boat will be a brilliant base for the whole Beckham clan to have magical holidays abroad.”

On Thursday, Victoria posted an Instagram snap of herself tanning aboard the yacht.

She donned a white swimsuit, a black cap from her namesake label and a large diamond rock on her finger.

“Sun protection is everything!! Which is why I can’t get enough of my exclusive VB logo caps. Available now! Kisses xx,” she captioned that photo.

The Beckhams have somewhat called Miami their home for quite some time, as they bought a $24 million apartment several years ago in the area. David is also a co-owner of the Magic City’s MLS team, Inter Miami.

Additionally, the pair own a $40 million townhouse in London — that includes six bedrooms, an indoor pool, a wine cellar, a gym and a nail salon — which they purchased in 2013. The residence is located in the Holland Park area of Kensington, otherwise known as “Millionaire’s Row.”

David and the fashion designer wed in 1999 after meeting at a charity football match two years prior.
