Grunion sports, grunion sports | on the water: alamitos bay yacht club welcomes potential members.

alamitos bay yacht club membership

Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s annual open house is from noon to 4 p.m. this Saturday, June 4.  There will be hot dogs on the grill, sailboats on the water and plenty of folks to talk to about joining the club, according to the flyer that has been distributed.

“Whether interested in sailing casually, racing at any level or just relaxing and enjoying the club and all it has to offer, ABYC has something for everyone,” 2022 Commodore Brooke Jolly wrote in a text.

Director of Membership Michael Oliver has arranged for a variety of different types of boats to be on hand for visitors to take for a test drive.

Outerwave Surf Band will be performing, the no-host bar will be open, and members will be conducting tours of the clubhouse. There will be complimentary food, and special membership incentives will be offered for those who join.

The club, celebrating its 98th birthday this summer, is located at the end of the Peninsula, at 7201 E. Ocean Blvd., and has a rich history. To members, it is about being out on the water more than sitting in a clubhouse.

Historically, members have met in fellow sailors’ homes, an old firehouse “hand me down” from the Port of Long Beach, and a funky floating barge.

Today, the clubhouse has the prime location on the bay, with 360-degree views of the beach, bay and Port. The recent remodel of the upstairs bar area resembles an East Coast club, with vintage photos documenting the club’s history on the walls.

“We have a modern clubhouse facility, and our paved boat yard is home to 200-plus sailboats, owned by our members who are active racers and cruisers. We also have excellent beach access from our western gate for convenient enjoyment of our tranquil and inviting Alamitos Bay. ABYC’s primary goal is to provide a family-friendly atmosphere where we can get together and share our love of sailing,” Commodore Jolly wrote.

Blazing Sabots

If you do opt to join, there are events like the upcoming Men’s Day regatta on June 19 — Father’s Day — in Naples Sabots. Toni Morford, whose husband and daughter have both served as ABYC Commodores, suggested readers might want to chuckle at some highlights of the Blazing Sabots Notice of Race that include:

Weight Classes: The Good (Heavy), The Bad (Heavier), The Buoyant (heaviest).

ABYC recommends that all competitors wear personal flotation devices while on the water. Since you are all big boys, we will leave that up to you.

It is not our fault if you get hurt or catch a disease indigenous to Alamitos Bay.

Support person vessels, including coach and spectator boats, shall stay out of the way, but can be used as a refreshment dispensary.

To separate the Men from the Boys, all sailors must meet the minimum age requirement of 18.

Oh, and you must be a man, hence “Men’s Day Regatta.” The event fee includes a Western breakfast, a tap into a “pony” keg and other grub. Weighing of competitors, along with snide comments, will be from 1000 to 1130.

SafeSport Training

All laughing aside, the safety of our sport is essential. US Sailing, the national governing body for the sport of sailing in the United States, is required under federal law to educate its members about the US Center for SafeSport’s abuse reporting mechanisms.

The mandatory child abuse prevention training is for board members, staff, junior sailing committee members including event chairs and staff as well as all race officials. The training is recommended for anyone who interacts with a junior sailor.

Commodore Jolly is encouraging everyone to complete the free online class. She even hinted of a celebratory event for ABYC’s membership if the goal was reached this summer. I hope other clubs and those in youth sailing follow her lead.

As we prepare to host the 2028 Olympics, I encourage everyone in our water community to take advance of this opportunity to become educated on the law. To take the training, access the US Sailing SafeSport link www.ussailing.org/competition/resources/safesport-us-sailing.

KEYS TO THE CLUB

What’s  next.

Each week you’ll receive an email about Long Beach Yacht Club and choose an experience that guides your immersion into our way of life. You can always return to this page at any time for information regarding your new membership!

We are known for our signature sailing regatta - Congressional Cup - yet we were founded in order to host a powerboat race.

The repeated use of a red star in our burgee is a wink to LBYC member Eddie Fink, who won the Star Class World title in 1932.

Star Boats were an Olympic class sailboat, and the win was key to Long Beach's fleet to be sponsors in the 1932 elimination rounds for the Olympics. (Gilbert Gray of New Orleans ended up representing Long Beach).

The palm trees in the club's parking lot were all planted over one weekend by LBYC volunteers. The trees arrived from a farm in Palm Springs in two pickup trucks, and individual members sponsored the tree purchase - $25 apiece!

The lava rocks in the general manager’s office, the library, and the exterior round-about all came over on one vessel for the club's tiki architecture.

The LBYC pool is 25 yards and heated year-round.

Our race committee boat is named after our first commodore: Loynes.

The clubhouse was designed by Montierth and Stickland - well known mid century modern trailblazers. The building blends South Sea Island treatments with contemporary design glass walls.

Montierth and Stickland also designed the marine bazaar and the marina restrooms.

Our first clubhouse was donated to the Sea Scouts - a long-term relationship between the Scouts and the club that has continued.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More
