X-Yachts X4-9 test: Danish yard strikes a tough balance with hybrid design

The X4-9 is a stylish performance cruiser that is both manageable short-handed and can still win races, reports Pip Hare

The X4 9 is squarely aimed at the no-compromise sailor who wants it all. It combines a comfortable, stylish interior, with clean, beautiful lines on deck and can even be raced with a minimal crew. This is a tough balance to achieve, and so often compromise can lead to disappointment.

Setting out on one of the only blustery days of the summer, with a crew of four, I was intrigued to find out if this 50-footer could really deliver the whole package. Within ten minutes of leaving the berth I was glued to the helm, blasting upwind with a grin on my face. When a company has 40 years of design experience, hybrid does not necessarily mean compromise.

The X4 9 is the third model to launch in the new ‘Pure’ X range, following the impressive X4 3 and X6 5 that we tested two years ago. This popular new range aims to bridge the gap between the Xp performance and Xc cruising lines. Some 18 boats have already sold since the first hull launched early this year.

Hitting the sweet spot between comfort and performance is a tricky thing to achieve, but this boat appears to have it all. The stylish interior combines good looks and practicality. On deck the X4 9 cuts an equally subtle yet impressive figure. The pin stripes of a full teak deck run seamlessly from bow to stern with every piece of deck gear that may interrupt it recessed or covered.

Control lines – along with the sprayhood – are concealed beneath the completely uncluttered deck

Our test boat had twin carbon wheels on unobtrusive pedestals and carried a carbon rig and deep V-boom. No single item grabs the eye but the whole boat holds your attention. It’s a powerful yacht, yet one that can be simply managed solo using well laid-out electric controls – perfect for a greedy helmsman.

Leaving our berth in the Hamble River, the wind was gusting 18 knots, with grey clouds scudding across the sky. It was going to be a feisty day and I was interested to see how our small crew would cope.

Power on tap

Looking up the 20m (65ft 7in) mast, I sensed the effort of hoisting the mainsail but no sooner had those thoughts crossed my mind than the main was up and the self-tacking jib set. Our test boat had an upgrade to electric power for all four winches and so handling the 119m 2 sail area was effortless: without this option, a lot of huffing and puffing will doubtless be involved.

Gently pulling the wheel down we bore away and almost immediately began blasting along at over 7 knots, the X4 9 straining to go faster. The instant power didn’t seem to match with how easily all the sail appeared; it felt like we’d dropped the clutch on a high-revving engine and I half expected to see steam rising from the wake behind us.

x-yachts-x4-9-boat-test-running-shot-credit-rick-tomlinson

A flush, uncluttered deck contributes to X4^9’s pleasingly clean lines

The wind was at the top limit for a full mainsail as we set off on a bouncy beat, which provided a dynamic and rapid ride. The X4 9 felt tender in transition from a standing start to being powered-up close hauled, heeling to around 20°, but once under way our angle of heel remained steady and appropriate for performance.

At a true wind angle of 44° the X4 9 stormed along at 7.5 knots giving a performance on the fast side of the cruising/racing spectrum. Helming from either position required only a light touch and even at maximum heel I felt completely secure standing against the single foot chock – even so, X-Yachts plan to offer a hinging steering ‘platform’ for greater stability on future models.

The low side deck only reached the back of my knees while standing and I wondered if this would be a compromise to comfort. In fact, it proved comfortable when heeled and felt natural with a great view of the sails and sea.

Ease of handling

The wind remained shifty and 20-knot bullets of breeze started to bully us as we tacked between shallows. Our test boat was fitted with an electric mainsheet traveller below decks, an optional feature I was hugely impressed by. The flat winder is effectively a captive winch system that drives the mainsheet car up and down the recessed track. The motor dropped the car fast enough to keep the X4 9 on its feet during the gusts and only required a light touch of a finger to power us back up.

The standard X4 9 package has a German mainsheet attached to a central point and no traveller. An increasing trend in cruising boats, this seems an acceptable shift from the barely effective coachroof travellers. However, given the ‘Pure’ X ethos is firmly grounded in a quality sailing experience, I was surprised that travellers are not standard. I personally struggle with the performance compromise when trimming a mainsail on vang and sheet alone.

I quizzed X-Yachts ’ founder and designer Niels Jeppesen on this and he responded that not all sailors actively use travellers and that, particularly on larger yachts, they can be dangerous for novice crews or guests. This is good reasoning but I feel the recessed and motorised solution to this problem is beautiful, practical and safe – I would pay the extra £7,000 to control the leech.

When we eventually capitulated to conditions, tucking in a first reef, the angle of heel reduced and our ride instantly became less twitchy with little effect on speed.

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 boat test – the next big thing for the world’s biggest builder?

Beneteau’s new stepped hull design works so well this 46.1 could become its most popular model ever

Finot-Conq-FC3-53-boat-test-running-shot-aft-credit-James-Mitchell

Finot-Conq FC3 53 test: Can this offshore cruiser deliver the best of both worlds?

If the electric green hull and striking looks of Nica don’t grab your attention, then its on-paper description certainly will.…

For my first tack at the helm I announced “Ready to tack?” and received the confirmation from our crew of three. Steering slowly through the tack, I anticipated a flurry of activity, but instead watched the crew get up, cross the cockpit and settle themselves into the cushions again as the self-tacking jib flopped over. Again, I was surprised by the performance versus effort relationship. There is little for crew to other than to sit back and enjoy the ride.

All four winches are set to the back of the cockpit leaving the seating area entirely rope-free. Despite the frisky conditions, the waves only reached halfway down the coachroof, leaving the cockpit totally dry.

x-yachts-x4-9-boat-test-helm-credit-rick-tomlinson

Primary and secondary winches are of equal size and set well apart for simultaneous use. The bank of jammers and rope organisers are far enough forward to allow ropes to be taken to either winch in a sensible radius. Controls could be reached by the helmsman leaning around the wheel.

The standard package comes with a self-tacking jib, though all boats are engineered to take longitudinal genoa tracks. Of the 18 boats sold to date, none have chosen that option. Our North 3Di jib had a number of holes in the clew, which provided surprisingly effective twist control on the breeze – move the shackle up a hole to reduce twist, down to open the top of the sail.

For reaching, a well-placed padeye attaches to the toerail to create an outboard lead. When powered up reaching under full main, we achieved 10 knots of boat speed at 100–110° to the true wind. I don’t imagine you would use the jib much below 150° true, as the position of the jib car makes it difficult to fill or pole-out, wing on wing. We made speeds of 7-8 knots dead downwind under main alone.

Our test boat carried a 200m 2 asymmetric spinnaker on a top-down furler, which we set in the lee of the Isle of Wight. Off-wind sails are flown from a padeye on the stemhead, as the stainless-steel bow roller has no bobstay so cannot support significant load.

We carried the spinnaker in winds from 14 knots up to 20 knots, managing wind angles of between 130° and 150° to the true wind. Our boat speed peaked at 12 knots and steering was fun but quite a handful at the higher wind angles.

In the stronger breeze, the 2.4m deep rudder kept a good grip but needed active interaction, resulting in fun and energetic sailing. I hogged the helm downwind, enjoying the ride and eating up the miles.

x-yachts-x4-9-boat-test-jib-credit-rick-tomlinson

A self-tacking jib on an X? It helps make a powerful boat easy to handle when shorthanded

Stowage taken seriously

Stowage on deck is in ‘the ends’ with both a cavernous bow sail locker and a lazarette cum tender garage. The transom drops down to create a bathing platform, revealing a garage 2.5m wide between the rams. This is large enough to stow a small inflated tender and houses access hatches for steering gear, rudder bearings and the mainsheet traveller system.

There is dedicated liferaft stowage under the starboard cockpit seats, which lift entirely off a flat bottom enabling the raft to be slid-out rather than lifted.

x-yachts-x4-9-boat-test-tender-garage-credit-rick-tomlinson

The garage is 2.5m wide between rams, but the test boat packed in a 3.2m RIB with deflated bow

The recessed sprayhood sits beneath a number of teak deck panels. To raise it, all panels must be removed, the hood erected, before the panels are replaced. It’s a multistep process, so don’t expect to be putting this up and down during a day on the water, but it’s a stylish solution to the problem of ugly and cumbersome sprayhoods.

Under the water, the X4 9 uses the T-keel of the Xp but has deeper sections and more rocker, like the Xc, for a more comfortable motion upwind. Topsides culminate in a substantial moulded toerail, and there is a gentle sheerline as the deck rises up to meet a blunt bow.

Strength and quality are cornerstones of X-Yachts build and design. Hulls are vacuum-infused, post-cured epoxy foam sandwich, with three watertight bulkheads. Rod rigging is standard.

x-yachts-x4-9-boat-test-interior-credit-rick-tomlinson

Interior fit-out is understated but with a soft and welcoming feel

Below decks

Below decks the Pure X4 9 is understated but stunning. The standard finish of Nordic oak is earthy but not dark and no reflective materials have been used in proximity to LED downlights to eliminate any ugly pinpoints of bright light. Overall the effect is soft and welcoming. The saloon felt instantly comfortable, a warm space with room both to live and practically stow all that’s needed.

The eyecatching centrepiece dining table is surrounded by a U-shaped sofa. There is stowage under the seats, accessed either via lifting tops on gas struts or deep pull-out drawers. Lockers at head level surround the entire cabin. All bench and cupboard tops are fitted with ergonomic fiddles, which add to a secure feeling moving around under way.

Located forward of the heads is a dedicated navstation. When not in use, instruments can be hidden from sight behind a locker door and, if a chartplotter is required, an additional wooden structure can be fitted over the chart table at eye-level.

The L-shaped galley is spacious and ergonomic, with white Corian worktops including a stove cover, a double sink, the option for two fridges and space for a microwave and the ubiquitous espresso machine. Opposite the galley is the aft heads, which has an integrated shower.

x-yachts-x4-9-boat-test-master-cabin-credit-rick-tomlinson

The X4^9 can sleep up to six

Smart cabins

The owner’s cabin is forward, an area flooded with light from two separate full-size deck hatches and bed-level hull windows. The main feature of this minimalist cabin is the large island bed and thick mattress. The bed lifts revealing stowage beneath. The ensuite heads is a generous size and has a separate shower cubicle.

The X4 9 is available with either two double guest cabins or a twin and a double aft cabin arrangement. Our test boat had the latter as well as bespoke fabric pipe cots.

The twin singles can be converted to a double using an insert, which creates versatility. Set up as a twin, the cabin did not feel cramped, there was plenty of room between the berths and I was able to sit comfortably upright on both bunks.

x-yachts-x4-9-boat-test-engine-room-credit-rick-tomlinson

Engine room access is a bit of a squeeze

Both cabins have large hanging lockers and drawers as well as under-bunk stowage. Access to the space under the cockpit is through side hatches from both cabins – here there is room for a generator, and a washing machine should they be chosen as options.

Our test boat had an uprated 80hp engine which seemed to fill every inch of the space under the companionway. There are additional access panels on both side of the engine bay but you won’t be getting in there to service the engine without a bit of a wriggle.

Our verdict

The X4 9 is an impressive beast that certainly seems to have it all. It is elegant and stylish without being showy and the consistent, thoughtful design and high quality build will appeal enormously to the experienced sailor.

But the magic really happens when you hoist the sails. It kept me engaged from the first moment I grabbed the helm and I was blown away that such a dynamic sailing experience could be achieved with such little effort.

There’s no doubt that our test boat, with its carbon rig and top-quality sails, gave an enhanced performance, but even without these features I believe this boat could feed our sailing souls.

There is truly a delicate balance between comfort, style, performance and the effort required to sail a boat of this size, but the X4 9 has the potential to keep everyone happy. This is not a compromise – X-Yachts has nailed it.

Well done, X-Yachts!

  • February 17th, 2024
  • Sailing Yacht

It is time for another interesting sailboat as seen during Boot Duesseldorf . It´s the new Xc-47 by Danish boatbuilder X-Yachts. This yacht is no stranger to me as I have seen her sailing during the “European Yacht of the Year” sessions in Port Ginesta when I was there with a client, sea trialing the Oceanis Yacht 54. Unfortunately, the “real” journalists had been occupying the yacht the whole time and I couldn´t enter the boat for that reason, nevertheless, I remember that, seeing her sailing by, I thought “she doesn´t look as awkward as on the renderings …”

x yachts.no

It was not the Xc-47 initially that I wanted to see when I approached X-Yachts co-owner and CEO Kraen Brinck Nielsen, admittedly. I was rather much more interested in doing an interview on the brand new upcoming X-R or X-Racing. Anyway, whilst talking, I peered above and again, in real life she didn´t looked quite as droll as I thought. And so I asked if Kraen would show me around, to which he enthusiastically agreed. And boy, am I happy I didn´t gave in to my initial prejudice: This boat is a head-turner!

Back to the roots – off to new horizons

X-Yachts, at least from my personal perspective, did indeed had quite a roller coaster ride during the past years. For what reason ever, the fact that Niels Jeppesen left the company – at last he was the founder and “soul” of X-Yachts – was very, very strange and sad. Also, I couldn´t understand the “X-Pure”-product line, which I felt was quality wise inferior to the previous boats. At the same time, they launched bigger and bigger units which received a “Mediterranean”-styling, twn rudders and so forth, which may have been good according to market demands, but it didn´t feel quite “Scandinavian” or what I was used to see from X-Yachts.

x yachts.no

Looking at the Xc-47, at least a larger part from those past values which I still hold dear in the brand, seem to re-appear. A wonderfully shaped single rudder blade, a relatively classy (narrow) length-to-width-ratio and a hull shape that promises speed, performance and sailing fun, rather than Mediterranean vacation with Aperol Spritz at anchor.

x yachts.no

Walking around the Xc-47 I start to notice all the nice details which always set apart an X-Yacht from all the others. Things they do because they want, not because they must. Like the seamlessly integrated bowsprit which is done not just beautifully but also practical. If damaged, the whole GRP-unit can be exchanged. The Xc-47 is made in vacuum-infused production technique and she also features the X-Yachts signature steel-frame onto which the keel is bolted. Very few boatbuilders are undertaking such an effort for maximum keel-safety .

x yachts.no

The boat showcased in Duesseldorf is a special one. We will discover that during the walkthrough. A herald of this claim is her name: SPACE X, not just a sidekick referring to Elon Musk´s rocket company and his vision of the future, but also to her being a roomy, voluminous cruiser. The Xc-series by X-Yachts was and still wants to be the perfect fast cruising yacht. When her hull reminds very strongly of the “good old times”, her deck structure is completely new: A deck salon yacht? We will see.

A new signature? Rhombs!

But why did she seem awkward to me in the first place. Well, this is because of the rhombs. Apparently, the designers at X-Yachts decided that hey should re-invent the principal shape of the windows. I can understand that they always seek for something new, for something special and “nice” and you can see that hull-windows and windows in general are a great chance to come up with new own signature shapes, just like the seascape windows or the “cateye”-windows on the Oyster , or even the hull windows on the new Hanse 460 . Anyway, X-Yachts´ designers decided to go for … rhombs.

x yachts.no

I still don´t like these shapes very much, I must confess. Maybe I am too conservative when it comes to boat design, maybe the shapes themselves feel too “spiky” or aggressive, maybe it´s all-too audacious and unexpected to see this from such a well-established rather classy brand like X-Yachts. I don´t know. I feel they are a bit off, design-wise. But, at the same time, remembering her sailing, it´s not as bad in real life at last. We board the yacht and I am very much excited, for some reason.

Generous cockpit, made safe

This yacht is advertised by X-Yachts as being “probably the best cruising boat” they have ever made. Xc-cruisers can often be seen in the Baltic Sea and they indeed have a spotless reputation for being quick, comfy yachts for long cruising. Standing in her cockpit, I quickly notice that the designers have put much effort into the layout and utilization of the cockpit by owners and guests.

x yachts.no

First of all, it´s a completely enclosed cockpit. The transom isn´t open any more. A large seating bench (which of course can be opened to give way onto the large bathing platform) stretches from one end of the stern to the other. There are two little Gecko-seats on the pulpits where you can enjoy a morning coffee when its calm and nice, together with the large coamings this cockpit first of all conveys much, much safety. I am sure this is to the liking of many prospect buyers of the Xc-47.

x yachts.no

The enclosed transom has a second reason: The volume of the aft “locker” is huge! A large opening hatch gives way into the aft transom “room” where some equipment and machinery is installed (like the rudder mechanics, auto pilot and so forth) but the bis spin of this all is that by having such a huge volume in the back, you don´t need to have big lockers in the cockpit benches. And this will save so much volume for the aft cabin underneath, you will see later. An ingenious move by the designers!

x yachts.no

What also strikes me, because it really has been literal years since I´ve last been aboard an X-Yacht, is the accurate and spotless finishing quality of the Teak deck woodworks. Ah, this is just awesome! Any detail you look at, the individual Teak-battens, the caulking, the spacing – it´s just perfect craftsmanship. Wow.

At the Xc-47 helm station

Standing behind the steering wheel, there it is again: This wonderful attention to detail. This is not just any ordinary steering wheel, which would be perfectly fine since it´s just a wheel that turns and moves the rudder. It´s also not just any ordinary composite wheel which has indeed some advantages over the heavy stainless steel-wheels. It´s a composite wheel with a perfectly crafted wooden round grip. Aaawww, how nice is that?

x yachts.no

The whole helm station is from an ergonomical standpoint very well executed. The panel on a large post (again, for my aesthetical taste a bit too much of edgy, “rhomby” forms) has everything well within reach. A large chart plotter, switches and controls where they are quickly in reach. I liked the idea of the massive steel handle in front of the wheel with a small cushion, again, it´s the details …

x yachts.no

You´ve read my article on the new Hallberg-Rassy 69 as well? I remember being a bit puzzled to see “ordinary” Lewmar winches and some other rather cheap-appearing details aboard the new Swedish flagship. On the Xc-47, I am relieved, they stick to high quality equipment, even in the details. For sure, the Andersen winches are common sense aboard the Xc-47. Nice.

Ah, design!

But the real surprise comes when I go down into the salon. The smell is enchanting. Every time the scent of wood is dominating over GRP- or Styrol-odors, that´s a sign for me. The Xc-47 smells like a recently inaugurated sauna. Like a stroll in the woods. Her light Oak wooden interior is welcoming and beautifully to look at.

x yachts.no

The layout of the salon is pretty classic, a fact that calms myself a bit down, since I had the fear that the designers could kind of overload the interior with rhombs and stuff. But the opposite is the case. The day-bath to starboard side (where it belongs), a large L-shaped galley to the portside (where it belongs) and to the front a huge lounging area, which is awesome.

x yachts.no

It´s not just the usual L- or U-settee. The main sofa around a huge, foldable and by the way beautifully made dinner table, is maybe the biggest sofa I´ve seen so far on a 47-footer. There´s not just enough room and width along the ship´s wall, but also the two opposing parts of the settee offer more than generous seating area. This place is surely capable of hosting wonderful dinners – for many people.

X-Yachts quality

Opposite, there´s a smaller 2- or even 3-seater sofa with a dedicated chart table. Again, the cushions are generously sized and welcoming. I like the massive quality of the joinery. No floorboard is squeaking, when “knocking on wood”, well, you are knocking on wood indeed. But also in the details …

x yachts.no

Most of the fronts of the shelves, cupboards and facings are made of one partitioned piece of wood. This is just a pure design feature and real luxury, but to look at a cupboard front and see the continuation of the wood grain over two, or three different wooden parts, is just pure eye-candy! Again, this is the real luxury and driving expenses in production, but hats off to X-Yachts, this attention to detail is what makes it look so awesome.

x yachts.no

The galley of the Xc-47 is placed exactly over the keel. This position on the pivotal point of the yacht is clever since here least of the boat´s motion within the moving waves is felt. Cooking a meal here even in foul weather shouldn´t be as stressful. A fact to seriously take into consideration when looking for a serious long-haul cruiser indeed.

Pushing it even further

Kraen is seemingly proud of this boat. And I´d say he is absolutely entitle to be so! As I roam the boat, he points to various details, some of them hidden. For example, he slowly starts to pull out one of the drawers in the galley. By doing so, he looks at me. Smiling. Of course, he is celebrating this and pulls a bit slower than normal, but I get the intention: This is a long, longer, the longest drawer I have ever seen in any galley so far!

x yachts.no

It has a comical side to it, for sure, but the practical use of stowage cannot be underestimated, especially in the galley. How often do I get the comment – even on bigger boats – from guests on our boats, that they feel a lack of stowage? This hidden volume, utilized in the Xc-47, will most certainly thrill potential buyers and skilled sailors.

x yachts.no

Another detail are the gas springs. As Kraen opens further more lockers in the salon here and there, I notice that each single flap is operated by at least one gas spring. Kraen smiles and tells me a story from the “European Yacht of the Year”-press sessions, when Jochen Rieker told him in awe that this was the “X-spring” boat, he´d never seen a boat with more gas springs.

This thing with the rhombs …

Now. Let´s talk about the rhombs. I get it that X-Yachts wanted to have something new. Something special and something that makes this boat recognizable at one glance. I get it that maybe they wanted to visually state some kind of turning point or a new era. I am fine with this. But a rhomb? It´s a shape that isn´t used by any other brand, so this can be a signature shape for X-Yachts, but maybe there´s a reason – I still find it hard to befriend myself with this shape. But. Well, but – at least for the large side windows – this form creates a large area for natural light to enter the boat.

x yachts.no

This is best seen from inside the salon. The Xc-47 may appear to be a deck salon yacht, but she is not. It´s even not a raised salon yacht as her deck or floor is relatively low. But the large headroom and the utilization of those big-area windows make for a great feeling inside. The large salon makes it appear to be on a much larger yacht. In the end, the Xc-47 is “only” 14.37 meters long (hull) and this makes her a mid-sized boat.

x yachts.no

The big windows are separated by a horizontal GRP-frame. From the outside it appeared a bit awkward and also “disappointing” to not have the full area of the window, but as Kraen tells me that this “frame” is indeed a duct for the running rigging, I am excited: Again, what an ingenious move and intelligent utilization of the apparent. You just have got to appreciate the creativity and practicality here.

Truly a cruiser to spend a lot of time aboard

The amount of natural light in this salon is amazing. Even within the relatively dark surrounding of the exhibition hall (before the opening hours it´s even darker here as not all lights are switched on before 10 a.m.). Next to the large side windows, even if parted by the halyard-ducts, there´s a big frontal window and no less than four skylight hatches.

x yachts.no

Looking from above, Kraen turns my attention to the fact that those four skylight hatches can be opened, which isn´t the big banger at all. The great thing about those four hatches is that each opens into a different direction. In this, you can adjust the hatches to funnel fresh air into the boat according to the wind direction outside. Or even have a hatch open but don´t have any airflow. Clever!

x yachts.no

All in all I am absolutely enthralled by the boat´s effect on me. Being a bit reluctant to come aboard because of my prejudice, I am now more than happy. She really is a beauty. But she also offers so much generous space and volume that she conveys a much bigger size that she actually has I reality. All those smaller and bigger details, which are practical and valuable for daily life aboard but also the attention to design and detail is stunning. Back to the roots? After the “Pure X”-boats couldn´t really convince me, this is a completely different thing now!

A treat for owners and guests

Many fore cabins, especially on big yachts, aren´t that nice. I understand that it is hard for an interior designer to fit in all the things needed, a bed, drawers, cupboards, lockers on the one hand but also to make it look great. Especially on classic aft-cockpit boats where the owner´s cabin is the fore cabin. I know it may sound biased, but I mean it, I still find the Oceanis 46.1 fore cabin/owner´s cabin the best front cabin solution to date of all production boats.

x yachts.no

The design of the owner´s cabin aboard the Xc-47 is also very nice. The bow section and volume of this hull is much smaller than in the Oceanis, nevertheless, the interior design is absolutely great. The use of wooden panels, the integration of the nice seascape windows (even if it’s the strange rhomb-shape) and the general feeling make it appear roomy. I love the fact that there´s no island bed, a much better solution for “real life”.

x yachts.no

Same goes for the aft cabins. The Xc-47 is offered in two layout variants regarding the configuration of the aft cabins. The one shown in Duesseldorf came with two aft cabins for guests, I would say, most owners will choose the version with one dedicated aft cabin for guests and one utility room for the other. The absence of (big) bench lockers in the cockpit, I already mentioned it, make the standing height and volume inside these aft cabins much bigger than on equally sized yachts.

x yachts.no

As for the utility room, X-Yachts offers a washer/dryer-combination, more freezing or cooling capacity and a work bench along with much more stowage if chosen. The version exhibited was a mirrored cabin with two separated berths. I guess the owner´s version is the one the shipyard will be selling most. There are two bathrooms available in the Xc-47, one in the fore cabin to portside, one on starboard near the companionway.

x yachts.no

All in all, the Xc-47´s interior is welcoming, light suffused, lush and modern. It is beautiful and contemporary but not as “trendy” as some others. I am sure, this clever mix of modern lines and classy design will be recognized as beautiful in 10, 15 or even 20 years to come. The boat is also surprisingly “calm”. Whereas other brands seem to need to “cry out” loud that they are new, fancy and great, this is just a calm, relaxed statement of classic beauty. I like it. And to be honest, from the inside, I barely noticed the rhombs anymore …

Going in full electric

I have written some articles on this topic already and the electrification or at least “hybridification” of pleasure boating is a huge trend. For now, I would say it is more politically driven than sourced in a real demand by the market, in any case, I guess, going full electric or just hybrid is something that will come somehow or other in the future. In this, X-Yachts offers the Xc-47 as an all-electric boat.

x yachts.no

The standard 80 horsepower Diesel engine on the SPACE X is replaced by a 25 kW (30 kW peak power output) electric pod drive by Oceanvolt. The lithium battery delivery up to 46 kWh electric power that, according to the shipyard, is enough for 30 miles at 6 knots. An 11 kW Diesel generator can be used for re-charging. I am not a huge fan of the current systems as they are simply too weak, provide for too less range range and thus safety, but I also see the need that at some point the shipyards and suppliers need to start. It´s definitely worth observing and following.

A new chapter for X-Yachts?

As we leave this boat, I am honestly thrilled. Never had I thought that this Xc-47 would be such a nice boat. I still cannot make peace with the rhomb-shapes, but in relation to all the great details, the overall layout and the stunning finishing quality, this indeed is something I could even live with. I congratulate Kraen and the whole team for this boat. Truly a stunning yacht and for me, after a period when this brand wasn´t too much interesting to me, this indeed is a new chapter for X-Yachts.

x yachts.no

We talk a bit about the upcoming X-Racing project and Kraen discloses that this will be a totally new constructed all-out racer, living up to the true X-DNA, I really believe him. Maybe this is worth a further trip t Haderslev to check out the XR-project in more detail soon? In any case, the brand seems to have overcome the departure of Niels Jeppesen and this is a good thing for the shipyard, the current owners and future buyers. With the new Xc-47 entering the high-class mid-sized cruiser-market, it will be very exciting to see where the Danish brand is steering too in the coming years.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

x yachts.no

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

x yachts.no

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

x yachts.no

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

x yachts.no

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

x yachts.no

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

x yachts.no

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

x yachts.no

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

x yachts.no

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

x yachts.no

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

x yachts.no

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Spectacular multi-million dollar yachts — check! Balmy, waterfront location — check! Family-friendly exhibitions and fun — check!

Then it must be the 42nd annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, which cruised into West Palm Beach this week. The city’s waterfront Downtown was transformed into a yachters’ haven, filled with ultra-luxurious yachts and cruisers and a seemingly endless range of yachting-inspired activities.

This year some 800 boats and yachts participated in the show, which is expected to lure over 55,000 total visitors along with 600 brands. In total, the four-day show is anticipated to pump over $1 billion into the economy of the Palm Beach area, which has seen both its population and popularity surge since the pandemic.

Exterior of a hot tub on a boat.

“Beyond its economic significance and standing in the industry, the Palm Beach International Boat Show holds a special place in the hearts of local residents, revered as one of the region’s must-attend events,” said Alyssa Freeman, executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County (MIAPBC).

The show supports a series of satellite events such as the Winward VIP Club, with an open bar, gourmet dining and special pop-up activations. The Super Yacht Show Palm Beach at Palm Harbor was where the show’s most glamorous — and truly gargantuan — superyachts are on display. At the AquaZone, which is presented by Nautical Ventures, guests can enjoy a “show within a show” via an interactive experience featuring a wide range of water sports and cutting-edge, marine-related products.

“The Palm Beach International Boat Show holds a special place in the hearts of local residents.”

As always, the Show delivers an exceptional array of culinary experiences, including world-class cocktails provided by sponsors such as Goslings Rum. The Show also includes a series of education seminars that appeal to visitors of all ages, including the Hook the Future’s Kids Fishing Clinics with Captain Don Dingman, who demonstrates various fishing techniques while showcasing a wide variety of fish species. Participants get a free Hook the Future x Carolina Skiff rod and reel combo.

But it’s really all about the boats. Here are five of the most unique, intriguing and eye-popping vessels on display.

The lucky charm

Interior of a room on the Talisman C.

Few yachts at this year’s show are as jaw-dropping as Talisman C. Designed by London-based interiors aces H2 and manufactured by Turkish master yacht-builders Proteksan Turquoise, it’s currently listed for sale by British yachting firm Burgess for a cool $59.7 55 million. Spanning just over 231 feet long, it features six full-sized cabins that can sleep up to 14 guests, including a sprawling owner’s suite with its king-size bed and crystal chandelier, massive walk-in closet and grand library (which can easily be converted into an additional cabin).

Upstairs, the yacht’s sundeck features a large glass-encased Jacuzzi, sun beds and dining area under the sun or stars. A chic swim platform allows for easy access to the azure seas while the nearby aft deck area includes a fully equipped bar with club seating as well as a full-size dining area capped by a glass-threaded chandelier.

The vessel is powered by a pair of 2,447hp Caterpillar diesel engines, which provide a top speed of 18 knots, a cruising speed of 15 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles.

The emperor

Exterior shot of Nero.

Reaching just under 300 feet in length, the Nero is, without doubt, one of the most eye-catching vessels at the entire Palm Beach show. Although completely contemporarily designed and manufactured, the Nero embodies the look and aesthetic of classic boats from yachting’s golden age during the 1930s. Fully overhauled in 2021, the Nero — which is currently on the market for just under $500,000 per week via Burgess — was designed in the spirit of Corsair, a yacht launched in the 1930s that belonged to legendary Wall Street financier J.P. Morgan.

Inside, it could not be more luxurious. On the top deck is a world-class gym fitted out with equipment by Technogym, while a few steps beyond is a beauty salon, which comes with an in-house beautician and masseuse.

There are six cabins with room for 12 guests — along with an on-board Jacuzzi, pool and waterslide. Throughout, veteran yacht designer Laura Pomponi has updated and upgraded the Nero’s look, introducing a range of new handmade carpets, along with hardwood floors, new sofas and elegant art-works. Pomponi has also lent her hand to Nero’s distinctive 30-foot Corsair custom-built tender that has been refitted so guests can arrive in impeccable style.

The secret agent

Exterior of deck aboard Casino Royale.

As its name suggests, the 236-foot Casino Royale brings a large dose of Bond-like elegance and intrigue to West Palm Beach. Constructed by Italian master shipbuilder Tankoa in 2018 and given a top-to-bottom retrofit in 2022, Casino Royale includes six cabins for 12 passengers and has been awarded a slew of industry accolades for its innovative and forward-thinking technology and aesthetic. Nearly two dozen crewmembers tend to those lucky voyagers, which luxuriate in an on-board circular swimming pool and access the ship via a helicopter port.

The yacht’s primary suite is nothing if not grand, featuring 180-degree views from its king-size bed along with its own study and al fresco terrace with private sunbed and Jacuzzi. There are five additional guest suites — all with their own private baths. Just beyond is an open-air living layout complete with a range of bespoke contemporary furnishings across the boat’s nearly half-dozen passenger decks.

Outside the amenities are just as abundant and include an onboard beach club with a lounge, bar, sauna, terrace and hammam/shower. All are ideal locations to rest and recharge after a workout in the yacht’s wellness center. On the main deck, there’s a nearly 20-foot-long infinity pool, while that helipad can easily convert into a dance floor.

The love boat

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Edmiston & Company (@edmistonyachts)

Completely futuristic and totally cool, the 180-foot-long Come Together is the ultimate example of stealth wealth on the high seas. Completed just two years ago by the Dutch firm Amels and currently on the market for a cool $65 million, Come Together features an unmistakable architecturally styled exterior reminiscent of a city-center skyscraper.

The boat can house up to 14 guests and 13 crew members within its unmissable steel hull and an aluminum-clad super structure — all cruising at a top speed of 15.5 knots.

The boat’s expansive master suite is set within its main deck and features sprawling storage space, a dressing room as well as his and hers bathrooms. There are an additional VIP cabin, two double cabins and two further cabins that can operate as twins or doubles. Up top, there’s a fully equipped gym and Jacuzzi — while a set of Jet Skis, water skis and hover-like Seabob watercraft keep the fun going just off deck. Come Together’s unique underwater lighting system also delivers a strong dose of excitement come nighttime and is the perfect way to enjoy an after-hours swim.

Want more? Then don’t forget about the on-board wakeboards, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment. And, when the moment strikes to head from the boat to land, travel could not be easier thanks to an easy-access 30-foot Limo Tender.

The cordial cruiser

Exterior of Hospitality.

The aptly named Hospitality ticks off the right boxes when it comes to superyacht bells and whistles. This twin-engine beauty can house up to 16 passengers along with 11 crew at a maximum cruising speed of 24 knots. Built back in 2011 by Westport Yachts here in the US, Hospitality — which is currently on the market for just under $30 million — underwent a comprehensive retrofit in 2021.

Along with all of the requisite yachting toys — Jet Skis, Seabobs and paddleboards — Hospitality includes a grand private owner’s suite with its own private relaxation balcony, seven cabins along with a relaxation room that can be used as a gym or spa and meticulously designed public spaces across is handful of decks. There’s also a handy tender for quick — or, not so quick — jaunts to the shore for dining and shopping.

Hospitality mostly cruises the Caribbean to New England, making the most of Northern Hemisphere winters.

Erykah badu asks jay-z to fend off beyhive after shady beyoncé post, erykah badu to jay-z you gonna let beyoncé steal my look, 1.4k 3/20/2024 4:57 pm pt.

Beyoncé saddled up and unveiled her alternate "Cowboy Carter" album cover art Wednesday, and Erykah Badu 's all fired up about it ... thinking it's a full imitation of her, and, no, she's not flattered!

She's accusing Bey of copying her signature beaded bob hairdo without so much as a thank you, prompting Erykah to repost the image with a mockingly curious "Hmmm" caption.

Fans, especially Beyoncé's, immediately took note of EB's allegation of a style jacking.

To Jay Z . Say somethin Jay . You gone let this woman and these bees do this to me ?? 😆 pic.twitter.com/oxNhNgvfWp — ErykahBadoula (@fatbellybella) March 20, 2024 @fatbellybella

In fact, the Beyhive is so riled up, Erykah switched from IG to X, where she urged Jay-Z to come to her rescue, posting ... "Say somethin Jay. You gone let this woman and these bees do this to me??"

Tough position for her to put Hov in -- after all, that's his wife Erykah's insulting!!!

It's interesting for Erykah to single out on the hairstyle, because Beyoncé's alternate "Cowboy Carter" album cover art (for vinyl LPs) has a lot happening -- the singer poses in the buff, only covered in a sash with "Act II" and "Beyince," her cousin Angie's last name, stamped across the front.

Yet, Erykah's laser-focused on that hair.

Remember, Erykah also targeted Bey last year over hats she wore during her "Renaissance" tour, which she also thought ripped off her style.

So, Mt. Badu's been ready to erupt, and it seems "Cowboy Carter" is the trigger.

Florida news | rep. carolina amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed | special report, florida news, florida news | go inside research boat that studies florida’s overheated corals.

The Coral Reef II is docked in Miami on March 13, 2024. The research team left that morning for Key Largo.(Tampa Bay Times)

While you might first notice the glossy super yachts or a fishing trawler on the Miami River, there’s also an 80-foot vessel packed not with partiers, but scientists, trying to protect the coral offshore.

Bridget Coughlin, the CEO of the Chicago-based Shedd Aquarium, said their research vessel named the Coral Reef II is docked in Miami because of the diversity of marine life in the area.

“We teach climate change through empathy with animals,” said Coughlin. “If you talk about how otters are starving, that empathy for that otter is going to catalyze you to act.”

The vessel can go out to sea for three weeks at a time and can travel as far south as the Dominican Republic. The researchers study a plethora of animals including queen conch, endangered rock iguanas, sharks and climate change’s impact on the coral reef. From March through October, the crew often works days that stretch from 7 a.m. to midnight.

How to come aboard the research vessel

The Coral Reef II also acts as a live-in laboratory for aspiring marine biologists. High school and college students can go on a weeks-long journey that includes snorkeling in crystal-clear water with Caribbean reef sharks and working side-by-side with scientists. Chuck Knapp, a 30-year employee of Shedd and the head of conservation on the vessel, said he got his start that way.

“I was originally a high school marine biology student back on the boat as a 17-year-old in the late ‘80s so it’s been a thrill of a lifetime to come back,” Knapp, who gave a tour of the vessel in the video said.

This summer, high schoolers will be taking a trip to the Bahamas to learn about how to protect dolphins, snorkel shipwrecks and observe firsthand from Shedd’s shark research biologist.

Conducting research on coral reefs bleaching

One of the most unique parts of the vessel is its live well system, which consists of large built-in tanks at the front of the boat filled with seawater.

These mini aquariums are a safe harbor for wildlife that scientists are trying to study or move. The live well system makes it easy to scoop marine life like coral up, perform heat stress tests and return them back to sea in hours.

Ross Cunning, a coral biologist with Shedd, said researchers can use technology onboard to test how well the coral absorbs sunlight and observe what temperature and speed cause corals to bleach.

Even two corals of the same species might bleach at different speeds, and they’re looking for the most heat tolerant coral, Cunning said.

Last summer he worked alongside South Florida research groups, like the University of Miami, the Coral Restoration Foundation, and Reef Renewal to test snippets of these baby corals in nurseries that have been growing in higher water temperatures.

“Finding interventions to boost the heat tolerance in coral reefs is more important than ever,” Cunning said. “But the most critical thing we need to do is stop climate change.

“All the research in the world will not boost coral heat tolerance enough to cope with oceans that continue warming. We must stop the root of the problem and stop greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible.”
