Azipod® propulsion

30 years of excellence at sea

The outboard motor is a familiar sight, mounted on the back end of a boat, providing both power and steering. Now picture an electric motor encased in a steel pod, suspended under the hull, allowing it to rotate full circle. Then imagine the pod as big as a house, with a motor powerful enough to move a ship the size of an entire town. In these images, the ingenuity of the Azipod® propulsion system starts to become clear.

The power of pods

To get an idea of the immense toughness of Azipod® propulsion, consider that it was conceived to cut through sheets of ice more than two meters thick. To understand the finesse of the system, remember that it was entrusted to move humans – the most valuable of all cargoes.

The podded propulsion system relies on an electric motor, the simplest motor of all, requiring no oxygen to operate and generating zero exhaust. As long as electricity can be supplied, the motor can be placed virtually anywhere on a ship – or in the case of Azipod® propulsion, not on the ship at all, but under. This in turn allows the propeller to be connected directly to the motor, instead of via shaft lines or mechanical drive trains.

Together, these features allow the motor and propeller to be rotated 360 degrees, pulling the ship in any direction, providing the revolutionary maneuverability that has made Azipod® propulsion a legend in the marine industry. Electrical power minimizes engine noise and vibration as well, ensuring a smoother, quieter ride.

Serving all segments

With its unique combination of precision and power, Azipod® propulsion proved perfectly suited to highly demanding marine operations in the offshore oil and gas segment. Talking about precision, one captain claimed: “I could hold a fresh egg between the boat and the dock without cracking it.”

Dry cargo vessels benefit from Azipod® propulsion in operations where vessels must perform reliably over an extended period at maximum efficiency, in addition to being highly maneuverable in shallow waters. Special requirements such as ability to operate in ice is another advantage of Azipod® propulsion for these types of vessels.

And as the mainstream cruise industry strengthens its commitment to Azipod® propulsion, ferries and exploration-class cruise vessels are emerging as growing markets. Over the years, a full range of Azipod® units has been developed to serve the various marine segments.

Azipod® factories – the big and the small of things

Azipod® units are produced at three factories, with Helsinki and Hamina factories in Finland delivering the largest models’ propulsion and steering units respectively, and compact units constructed at the Shanghai facility, which celebrates 10 years of operation in 2021.

All factories stand out as models of cleanliness and safety. During production, the giant units are transported between workstations on air-cushion dollies. With the towers of the large units rising several stories into the air, the pods give the impression of weightless submarines as they glide silently across the gleaming floor.

Despite the massive dimensions of the units, the safety record at the factories is impeccable. In keeping with ABB’s paramount dedication to safety, strict anti-infection measures were enacted at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic, ensuring uninterrupted production with minimum risk to factory workers.

Read our story

Delivering today, designed for tomorrow.

With future-proof capabilities that allow owners to invest today in anticipation of tomorrow’s power solutions, the Azipod® system can be powered by electricity drawn from any energy source, including batteries and fuel cells, and is designed to be adaptable even to energy sources that have yet to be discovered.

The story of Azipod® has been written by innovative believers on a quest to deliver a new and better solution for propelling ships. Now Azipod® propulsion has rounded 30 years of service to society, saving fuel and reducing emissions while delighting captains and passengers alike with smooth, precise and powerful performance. With its built-in ability to tackle new challenges as shipping sets course to a sustainable future, the next decades of Azipod® propulsion promise to be equally as rewarding.

Azipod propulsion and toe angle optimisation

Abb develops a digital solution to drive efficiency….

Image for article Azipod propulsion and toe angle optimisation

The trend towards large scale pod-drive propulsion systems has come from the cruise ship market, where the technology has been developing steadily for over 20 years. The need for precision manoeuvrability and efficiency in the cruise ship industry drove the innovation behind the technology. Azipods (registered trademark of ABB), and pod-drive systems more broadly,  have now become a common feature of new-build design. Since the first Azipods were installed onboard superyachts, with the 90m Lürrsen Ice (ex Air) and the 65m Benetti Ambrosia III, in 2005 and 2006 respectfully, demand and application has grown.

As emission restricted zones proliferate, and large yachts are increasingly unable to anchor in large sections of the Mediterranean, the ability to run hybrid-electric propulsion and dynamic positioning with a pod-drive system such as Azipods,  presents an option with a growing appeal for the larger yacht fleet. Providing direct thrust in any direction removes the need for a stern thruster, both assisting maneuvrability and creating an improved drag coefficient for the hull design. As highlighted in the 2017 RINA Megayacht Whitepaper, Azipods provided a 9 per cent improvement in propulsive efficiency, across the case studied vessels.

In conjunction with adherence to environmental restrictions, the industry is striving toward greater efficiency of operation, and incremental gains and optimisation of existing systems are key drivers of real benefits. Literally streamlining a system is a great place to start.

ABB has announced a new digital solution: Ability OptimE - Toe Angle Optimisation for Propulsion; a system to complement existing Azipod installations, designed to increase efficiency. According to ABB, The system operates by continuously adjusting the starting angle to achieve continuous optimal flow through the propulsors.

azipod yacht

The ‘toe angle’, as demonstrated above, is a principle that many of us are more familiar with with respect to the alignment of the wheels on our cars, however, it has significant implications for the hydrodynamic efficiency of a superyacht with Azipods. To interrogate what this means, and how it can assist the efficiency of a superyacht with Azipods, SuperyachtNews speaks with Jukka Maattanen, Global Product Manager at ABB.

“The working principles of ABB Ability OptimE are based on collecting vessel data, such as Azipod propulsion data, vessel speed data and environmental conditions, and processing it; deriving the effect of the Azipod toe angle to the propulsion power of the vessel to maintain speed through water, and configuring it specifically for the vessel”

These small and continuous adjustments, relative to a high-speed data stream, are what ABB see as key to increasing the efficacy of the system. As Maattanen continued.  “Once the toe angle that minimises the propulsion power has been determined, the engine will start running with a lower engine load, which results in consuming less fuel.”

ABB has calculated the fuel-saving to be up to 1.5 per cent. There is often a fixation on larger numbers than 1.5 per cent with respect to savings in efficiency, but when extended over an average scope of yachts operational lifetime, it is a significant number.  According to Maatanen, the development is partly in response to a shift in the attitudes of owners. “We are aware that superyacht owners are increasingly choosing solutions that support environmentally conscious operations, and we are pleased to be able to introduce ABB Ability OptimE, that further optimizes the ability of ABB’s Azipod propulsion system to save fuel and cut emissions.”

The Ability OptimE presents a digital solution, that can save the vessels operational costs while reducing the raw environmental impact associated with emissions. Suitable both for new builds and retrofitting, ABB Ability OptimE is part of ABB Marine & Ports ‘Bridge to Propeller’ integrated solutions for ships, which include bridge control, sensors, digital reporting, automation, and propulsion technology.

ABB to supply Azipod drive to Oceano for a super-yacht

azipod yacht

  • electric ships

ABB has scored the debut deal with Dutch luxury yacht builder Oceanco. They will use Azipod technology to supply propulsion to a superyacht. Both partners consider this the beginning of future projects in a market ABB estimates to exceed $10 billion by 2025.

For the project at hand, ABB will supply two 2.5 MW Azipod units, together with propulsion drives and controls. The system works like a serial hybrid. A submerged pod underneath the ship’s hull contains an electric motor, which the ship’s diesel engine powers so there are no batteries. Still, ABB claims the system cuts fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent compared to traditional shaftline propulsion systems.

It is one of their most proven drives and has high manoeuvrability thanks to 360-degree rotation. Italy’s cruise ship firm Fincantieri , for example, installed the first Azipod drives in the late 1990s and recently closed a 150-million-dollar-deal with ABB for the drive. Azipod also powers ferries or tankers. The Chinese shipyard Chengxi is waiting for ABB to equip two container ships 1.9 MW Azipod units this year.

For the Oceano yacht, not much more is known other than that will be a “superyacht built to the highest sustainability standards.” Orders usually see ABB delivering all components, including generators, frequency converters, switchboards, drive transformers and a remote control system to operate the Azipod units from the bridge.

The Dutch will also have access to ABB’s Remote Diagnostics System for equipment monitoring and troubleshooting. ABB also runs the Ability Collaborative Operations worldwide. Eight centres worldwide host experts who monitor onboard systems, coordinate equipment diagnostics and offer maintenance services 24/7.

When speaking of the new partnership, Remco Jurgens, Naval Architect, Oceanco said, the two companies assessed the potential for the integration of complete power and propulsion systems in future projects. Thomas Hackman, Market Development Manager, Superyachts, ABB Marine & Ports also said they looked forward to collaborating in the future.

The EU parliament, in September 2020, demanded the inclusion of CO2 emissions from maritime shipping in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme to decarbonise naval transport. Future legislation will be subject to negotiations with EU member states and the EU Commission.

ABB Propulsion System to Power Innovative New Vessels

azipod yacht

Created nearly 30 years ago but continually refined with new models and iterations, ABB’s Azipod propulsion systems have recently been ordered to power two entirely different types of innovative vessels. One is a technically advanced jack-up vessel for installing offshore wind farms, the other for Ritz-Carlton’s new line of luxury mega-yachts.

In August, ABB announced it secured a contract with Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard in China to supply an integrated power, automation and propulsion system for a newbuild jack-up vessel (JUV). The JUV Boreas, which is anticipated to be one of the most technologically advanced on the market, is due for delivery to the owner, Dutch marine contractor Van Oord, in the second part of 2024.

azipod yacht

It will be equipped with ABB’s Azipod gearless propulsion units in which the electric propulsion motor is directly connected to the propeller shaft. The main propulsion will consist of four nozzled Azipod DZ1250 units, each with 4 MW power. The units are powered by a permanent magnet synchronous propulsion motor, providing high electrical efficiency and very high torque already on low rpms. Azipod D has a hybrid cooling system, which combines the direct sea water cooling of the stator and internal closed-loop air circulation to increase the torque and power density of the propulsion motor.

As a major player in the global offshore wind market, Van Oord has contributed to the installation of wind turbines with a combined renewable energy capacity of 14.5 gigawatts since 2002, representing 40 percent of the installed capacity worldwide at the end of 2020. The Boreas will be one of the largest and most technologically advanced hybridized JUVs in operation, measuring 175 meters in length. It will be able to lift over 3,000 tons and will feature 126-meter-tall legs allowing it to operate at depths of up to 70 meters jacked up, with a capacity to install up to 20 megawatt offshore wind turbines.

The four Azipod units will provide Boreas with a combined propulsion power of 16 megawatts, offering significant space and weight savings as well as facilitating optimal ship design, allowing the vessel to transport heavier loads. The hybrid-electric propulsion system is designed to be future-proof as it allows integration of new energy sources once they become available.

The full package from ABB includes a closed-ring configuration for safer, more efficient and more predictable operations. Through its spinning-reserve and peak-load-shaving capabilities, the energy storage system acts as a back-up power source while reducing engine running hours to minimize wear and fuel consumption.

“We are proud to have been chosen to provide power and propulsion for Boreas, based on our experience in the offshore JUV market and our ability to tailor products and solutions to the needs of the owner, operator and shipyard,” said Rune Braastad, Global Business Line Manager, Marine Systems, ABB Marine & Ports.”

azipod yacht

In another recent hallmark deal, ABB secured an order with Chantiers de l’Atlantique for Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection to supply the Azipod electric propulsion systems and remote support for the luxury cruise operator’s two forthcoming mega-yachts. The ships are the second and third in a series that began with Ritz-Carlton Evrima, set to start operations this year.

With a capacity of 456 passengers, the two yachts will be larger than the 298-passenger Evrima while maintaining the exclusivity and personalized service that differentiate Ritz-Carlton. Both vessels will be built by the French shipyard Chantiers de l’Atlantique, with the first due for delivery in 2024 and the second in 2025.

Two 5.5-megawatt Azipod units will be key to meeting the efficiency, safety and passenger comfort demands of the 46,750-gross ton newbuild vessels, with a combined propulsion power exceeding that of the Evrima by 4.4 megawatts. In addition to the system’s ability to cut fuel consumption by up to 20 percent when compared with a traditional shaftline setup, it enables precise, efficient maneuvering with low vibrations and minimal noise for optimal onboard comfort.

“ABB Azipod propulsion has been serving the cruise market for over 25 years, providing unparalleled maneuverability and efficiency for a wide range of ships,” said Juha Koskela, Division President, ABB Marine & Ports. “It is the ideal solution for operators like Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, whose high standards for onboard service and guest comfort will be matched by the performance of the Azipod propulsors.” For more info, see www.abb.com .

Diesel-Electric Azipod Propulsion for Yachts

img

During the last 10 years, the global market for luxury yachts has more than tripled. The average length overall of yachts being built is increasing, with the largest newbuild projects today exceeding 120 metres LOA. The demand for power increases with the size of the yachts and the technical solutions available facilitate features, which have long been appreciated by the major cruise liner operators.

For a yacht newbuild, ABB is capable of supplying the complete electrical Power and Propulsion system and Integrated Automation systems. Project management, system engineering, commissioning, sea trial assistance, and life-long system support are part of a typical ABB delivery package. Diesel-Electric Azipod Propulsion for Yachts Diesel-electric Azipod propulsion – a well-proven standard among cruise liners, has become available for Yachts from 40 meters LOA to the largest Megayachts, with the introduction of the Azipod series. The ABB installation for this yacht (not disclosed because of confidentiality reasons) covers the alternators for the 8 MTU main generator sets (each resiliently mounted on a frame), the main switchboard, a pair of 6 100 kW asynchronous propulsion motors with PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) control, together with integrated machinery automation and dynamic positioning. Each of the propulsion PWM switchboards is configured to control the tunnel thrusters through a common DC bus. Typical Configurations: Open an example by following the link on the right menu. Any combination of the eight prime movers can be connected to the main switchboard in accordance with the prevailing need for power (propulsion + “hotel” load), as controlled by the Power Management system, which also protects the power plant from overload and black-outs. This will allow the diesel engines to operate at all times close to their optimum, resulting in low fuel consumption, longer overhaul intervals – and less NOx emissions. In the event of a failing prime mover, another one can instantly be brought on line. The arrangement also allows service of a genset during voyage. Operational safety is further enhanced through cross-connections from the main switchboard. ABB Marine Deliveries :
