Sailing in Bahrain?

Anyone out there who is or has sailed in or around Bahrain? What's it like? We've recently arrived on the island and so far have managed an afternoon's hire of a Laser Stratos which was fun until the wind died. Would love to find someone we can crew for, cruising or racing.  

Most sailing is concentrated around two clubs. The Bahrain Yacht Club towards the south end of Sitrah and the Bahrain Sailing Club on the west coast south of Zallaq. Suggest you try and make contact at one or the other. BYC has racing most Friday mornings.

Thanks Captn D - we'll give BYC a go, possibly even tomorrow. We tried Bahrain Sailing Club but apart from dinghy hire they're into match racing with the next event in April.

sailed in the gulf for nearly 10 years. Great fun, but watch out for those variable winds. Also, do everything you can to avoid abrading your skin with barnacles. The high bacterial burden inshore (despite the UV) means that any scratch can go really bad very quickly. And loads of the fish have spines which are very very painful, and don't tread on rays. And hammour roasted in silver foil over a beach BBQ, or poached in foil in red hot sand, is just out of this world. And fresh dates And...

Stole our money We booked a sailing course with Experience Bahrain in August 2021 for a Sailing course scheduled for November 2021. We sent them 300BD via Benefit Pay. They never booked us on any sailing courses for a year despite us calling to follow up monthly. Have requested a refund now for 6 months and still no refund despite weekly calls. Owner mentioned they have cash flow problems. 1.5 years since we paid and have'nt been paid back. I would not trust this company. Would you trust a boating company that takes you and your family out to sea when they don't have money? I wouldnt... i would be worried about safety of the boats more than getting ripped off. Not sure if our group went with this operator or not, but the island itself is a must visit when in Bahrain. Clear waters and white sand. We arrived in the afternoon as the island was slowly sinking under the high tide. After an approximately 45-minute boat ride from the yacht club, we were ready to enjoy the sand and the surf. I had previously had quite a traumatic experience on holiday and was adamant that this was not an activity for me. However, our instructor Baher was amazing. His ability to keep me completely calm and gain his trust easily meant that I actually managed overcome my fear and begin to enjoy scuba diving. We passed yesterday and now are looking forward to our upcoming holiday which is including a diving trip. Scubalife were brilliant at taking us to a shallow depth and organised our licenses to try. We also were able to combine this with a visit to an island. But the instagram post does not show enough or describe enough, I went there clueless and afraid it will not be perfect, even when I tried to call, the staff didnt say much and if I went by what she said (which was very brief) I would have thought it was “boring and overpriced” and just cancel the reservation. I went to Jarada Island with Scubalife and also did their Manama Skyline Tour and both of the tours were fantastic! Their boats are really modern and the captains made sure that we had a smooth trip each time. They even arranged a complete setup on Jarada Island for me which included some delicious food of my choice! The Manama Skyline tour is a great way of exploring Manama and being able to see more of the city from a different perspective while enjoying a scenic boat ride! I got to pass by reef island, some famous landmarks such as Bahrain World Trade Center and the Financial Harbour as well during the trip and returned to Bahrain Yacht Club by sunset which was amazing to witness as well! I want to thank Mr Mohamed for making sure that I had the best trips throughout my stay in Bahrain and I would definitely recommend Scuba Life to everyone who plans on doing a boat trip or any other water activities in Bahrain! The Danat Al Bahrain Yacht Club (DBYC) was established in 2015 and located on the southern shores of the Kingdom of Bahrain, GPS (25º 52.039′ N. 50º 36.585′ E). With its five-meter deep-water including state of the art high standard berthing pontoons that can accommodate up to 400 vessels, dry dock facilities for boats up to 10 meters and jet skis, a kayak station, in addition to space for short-stay visitors who arrive from different marinas or are visiting Bahrain by sea, the DBYC offers the highest range of services and facilities for boat owners. I tried a ship-within-a-ship cruise experience and it was worth it for the endless perks—here’s why

The MSC Yacht Club affords travelers a totally different cruising experience, but you’ll have to splurge.

I heard tales of luxury from people about the ritzy MSC Yacht Club , the ship-within-a-ship concept where discerning passengers enjoy their own area of the cruise ship that includes a dedicated restaurant, private lounge, separate pool and sundeck as well as private butlers and concierges to take of any whim while cruising. The elevated Yacht Club boasts priority everything while sailing MSC.

I sailed on a four-night cruise on the new MSC Seashore, a glitzy ship with Italian flair intermingled with references to New York City at every turn. Although the ship was well-appointed and had amazing dining, drinking and entertainment venues, and a bountiful Top Sail main buffet, thousands of passengers made the ship feel crowded at times, elevators were slow, and as I strolled through the general pools, they were boisterous and crowded.

Switch gears to MSC Seashore’s Yacht Club, passkey-protected for lucky guests, and is a 180 from the ship’s general spaces. Once you scan your handy Yacht Club wrist badge, or your room key, you’re instantly given entrance to a breathtaking retreat of 131 staterooms and suites. All this luxury does come at a price. Cruise fares will vary based on destination, time of year, and cabin category, but generally speaking you can expect to pay double for the Yacht Club. And from my experience, it’s worth it. You’re fast-tracked through everything

The Yacht Club’s exclusivity and impeccable service standard started from the moment I got dropped off at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. There were hundreds of people waiting to board at 1pm on embarkation day. I saw in the distance a canopy that said MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I wheeled our carry-on luggage to the representative under the canopy. I gave her my name and within two seconds, she gave me a sticker to wear and up we ascended on the escalator to check in. Just five minutes later, I was directed to the dedicated check-in area for Yacht Club guests. To my right, I saw about 1,000 people serpentine through ropes to do general check-in. I felt a sense of relief; who wants to wait in that line? Five minutes later, a butler from the Yacht Club insisted on wheeling my luggage to board the ship and I was in my room in a total on 12 minutes from the time I stepped foot out of the car to my stateroom in the Yacht Club.

Relaxing and streamlined

In addition, Yacht Club guests have the freedom to get off the ship first for excursions. Your butler will happily escort you off the ship with a smile. Guests also can disembark on the last morning first, which is a big convenience. Your butler walks you right to the place you disembark, bypassing crowds and hassles. Port Canaveral is about an hour away from Orlando International Airport, and we took a 10 am flight home. We didn’t have to linger around until the afternoon for our flight home.

Another perk is that there’s a special seating area in the theater for shows. All the shows were excellent during my voyage. All other ship passengers have to make reservations in advance for shows but that’s not the case for the privileged Yacht Club passengers. As long as you arrive about 10 minutes before any show you choose, a crew member from the Club will allow you entry into a special roped-off section. Again, no rushing through dinner—you have the flexibility to plan your evenings your way.

Your Yacht Club package is packed with remarkable value

The price tag may sound daunting, but there’s lots of value there. All Yacht Club cabins and suites include a premium drink package that covers beverages up to $15. You can use this perk both in the Yacht Club and throughout the ship. In addition, your package includes a two-device Wi-Fi package, which worked well during my sailing. Finally, you get access to the thermal spa suite, which is a place to indulge after a day in port or a sea day. Commonly, there’s a taboo regarding mini-bars, but not in the Yacht Club. It’s stocked each day with the beverages you want; just tell your butler and consider it done.

You get perks ashore too

If your sailing includes a call to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, Yacht Club guests get an elevated experience there too. Yacht Club guests enjoy a private area, and a dedicated restaurant called the Ocean House. While other ship guests were hosted to a buffet of predictable fare, I enjoyed a lobster roll, and my husband chose carne asada. In my opinion, one thing that could be improved was the tram service to the Yacht Club’s private area. We were told the last tram back was 3:30pm if we didn’t want to trek a 15-minute walk in the heat. Since we were docked in Ocean Cay for the evening and weren’t sailing, I was a bit dismayed by this logistical quirk. I felt like I was keeping an eye on my phone to make sure I didn’t miss the last tram.

You have private areas with curated food and drink and outdoor spaces

Within the Yacht Club complex, there’s the Yacht Club Restaurant, Top Sail Lounge and the One Pool Buffet, which are all exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Obviously, the food and service are steps above other dining venues of the ship, I can vouch for that. Although the food is delicious, if you don’t want to pay extra to dine at the specialty restaurants or fuss in the main buffet, eating three meals a day in the Yacht Club restaurant can get a bit monotonous. The breakfast is the same daily, and lunch and dinner offer a menu with daily specials plus a few standby selections like a hamburger or pasta each day. Although the Yacht Club Restaurant concept is desirable, I would strongly suggest dining in other venues on board, especially for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed specialty dining in Ocean Cay Restaurant, Butcher’s Cut, and Kaito Teppanyaki. I also want to mention that late afternoon high tea is offered daily at the Yacht Club Restaurant. It was one of the nicest I have experienced at sea.

Also available exclusively to Yacht Club passengers is the Top Sail Lounge, which offers panoramic water views and has chef-curated selections from morning through late night. We enjoyed popping into the lounge at all hours to try finger foods and sweets. The One Pool Buffet offers a more casual option for breakfast and lunch by the pool. The buffet has grilled fish, sandwiches and lots of delicious options if you want to dine outside.

There’s also an exclusive area with a private pool and two whirlpools for Yacht Club guests only. The sun deck loungers are very comfortable and I never had to worry about finding a lounger, there are ample. One issue I had was that there was almost no shade on the sun deck; there were shaded day beds for Royal Suite and Owners Suite guests, but beyond those, I couldn’t find any shade, which was disappointing.

You can justify the price at the end of your cruise

Overall, the best way to explain my enthusiasm for my MSC Yacht Club experience is this: it’s better to book an interior stateroom in the Yacht Club than a luxe cabin outside the Yacht Club. It’s worth the splurge and you return home feeling truly pampered and it’s money well-spent. And I make this prediction: Once you try a ship-within-a-ship concept like the MSC Yacht Club, you won’t want cruise any other way. Bon Voyage!

Bahrain Maritime Sports Association has been born from an idea of a talented and passionate man and sailor, Shikh Khalifa Ben Abdallah Al-Khalifa, the god-father of sailing in Bahrain. His love for the game and his skills of a visionary-man made of BMSA a dream that came true! Located in the heart of Bahrain, and reflects the vibrant energy of the area.

Bahrain houses a variety of private clubs for residents to socialise and pursue their active interests. BTM rounds up the most prominent of them.

THE BRITISH CLUB – BAHRAIN

This club, that is thought to have been started in 1935, apparently used to be known as The Gymkhana Club. Located in Adliya, it is one of the oldest and most popular expat clubs in Bahrain. Since its early years, it has built on its strengths, boasting over 2,000 members.

BAHRAIN YACHT CLUB

This spot offers patrons varied forms of sailing and water sports in a fun, friendly atmosphere on its sandy shores. It has a full marina facility for the secure safe mooring for boat owner members and access to a range of services from fuel to slip way facilities for vessels. Perfect for families and friends, the club’s natural private beach is fitted with sun loungers and umbrellas, for a relaxed fun day by the sea. There is also a swimming pool and three dining outlets: Anchorage Lounge, Pavilion Sports Bar and Third Reef Restaurant. THE DILMUN CLUB

Founded in 1974 in Saar, families come together to socialise and pursue their sporting interests here.  Besides two tennis and squash courts, two riding paddocks and the Astroturf football pitch, the club is known for its range of outlets, six in all, offering food and beverage that caters to all tastes. The Bulls Head Bar is a typical British pub-style bar, the fine-dining restaurant, Bistro, and The Inn At The Deep End are bustling eateries. CAPITAL CLUB

This is Bahrain’s premier business club perched high in the posh Bahrain Financial Harbour complex. Its purpose is to meet the demands of top profile businesspeople, executives and government officials. Membership is by invitation only and comprises a who’s who of the island and the region. The venue offers meeting facilities, complemented by stunning views. Members enjoy various added benefits such as discounts on airlines, hotels and luxury goods, as well as access to 270 reciprocal clubs around the world. BAHRAIN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

This club was an offshoot of the British Club, and later became its own entity in 1974. With more than 3,000 members, it is deemed to be the best venue for anyone interested in pursuing sports at a recreational or competitive level. It offers members rugby / football pitches, which also host Gaelic footie, netball courts, cricket pitches, a swimming pool and a sports hall. Members can also use the meeting rooms, clubhouse, fitness club and children’s play area.   Mano’s restaurant offers international cuisine, while The Blindside Barbecue is all about takeaway food, sandwiches and burgers.
